Although much of what remains from medieval Italy is found within the superficial built environment, most notably the plethora of extant basilicas across the peninsula, the town of Massafra in the Salento region houses distinct domestic and ecclesiastic spaces. The rock-cut villages and churches along the San Marco and Madonna della Scala ravines are architectural and artistic wonders dating back to the fourth century and used until the fifteenth/seventeenth centuries. Hewn from the rock, the spaces mimic the layouts of their built counterparts. The frescoes that cover the walls of the churches and crypts are particularly noteworthy and may even provide more nuanced insights into the daily lives of their medieval attendees and patrons.
In the famous Crypt of Candelora, named for the frescoed depiction of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, is an uncommon image of the Virgin Mary escorting the child Jesus to school. From what is known about the educational system in the Salento, school was integral to the lives of Jewish and Christian boys, beginning as young as the age of five. This fresco, then, appears to respond to and moralize a daily custom. Furthermore, the woman praying alongside her husband to the left of the Virgin also raises questions about the traditional dress of married women in the Salento. Archeological, visual, and textual evidence strongly asserts that married women traditionally wore head coverings well into the twentieth century. Yet, a few outliers, including this fresco, appear to contradict the regional custom.
This singular fresco is one of many that exist on the rock-hewn surfaces in Massafra’s churches, but it exemplifies the potency of frescoes as data of daily medieval Italian life and presents opportunities for further study.

Today Egypt and its Coptic Church is celebrating the Feast of Christ & the Holy family Entry into Egypt. According to the Bible, the child Jesus fled with his family from Palestine to Egypt by order of the angel to escape the oppression of King Herodus. Egypt is the only country to receive the blessing of the visit of Jesus and his mother, the Virgin Mary. This has made Egypt a distinguished country. And Christ lived in Egypt for three and a half years, in most of its cities. And the holy journey became a pilgrimage route for all the Christians. He lived in many caves, and the churches and monasteries were erected above them and Egypt became the holy land of the Christians as the land of Jerusalem. Also the monastery of Muharraq, which have a cave where Jesus lived 6 months is called the second Jerusalem. According to the Christian tradition, the Church of the Cave in el Muharaq Monastery was inaugurated by the hands of Christ and the apostles after the resurrection of Christ. There are many wells where the Holy Family drank from and other things used by Christ and the Virgin Mary are still in place. A tree called Mary's tree in Cairo kept the Holy Family hidden as Herod's soldiers passed and the tree is still curved since that moment. Many shrines and a pilgrimage path should be done by everyone for the blessing and for historical value. The flight of Jesus to Egypt is an important station of Egyptian civilization. It is worth mentioning that Pope Francis I of Rome officially approved the path of the Holy Family in Egypt as an official pilgrimage to the Catholic Cristians. 🇪🇬

The Zabbaleen is a word which literally means 'garbage collectors' in Egyptian Arabic. Whilst there are not many groups of Christians in Muslim-dominated Eqgypt, the Zabbaleen population of Cairo have managed to mantain their beliefs. When they were moved into a single settlement in 1969, it was only natural for a Christian church to pop up soon after. When this church burnt to the ground, the local Zabbaleen took it upon themselves to make a monastery that would last forever. Thus, the Monastery of Saint Simon was born. Simon the Tanner was an Egyptian craftsman saint who lived during the 10th century. Using a pre-existing cave and the slope that led into it, the current monastery seats 20,000 people around a central pulpit. Other nearby caves have also been built into separate church spaces and all of them have been linked to create a massive Christian complex in the heart of garbage city. If you’re wondering why this church is so asymmetrical, it’s because it has been carved inside of a cave. This is a hidden church in Cappadocia, Turkey. • • See more of Turkey here: #nomadicvisionturkey • • #cappadocia #cavechurch #unesco (at Göreme) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bqb6KLFHqLN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16e7jbgdvhjls

The Monastery of Saint Simon, also known as the Cave Church, is located in the Mokattam mountain in southeastern Cairo, Egypt, in an area that is known as ‘garbage city’ because of the large population of garbage collectors or Zabbaleen that live there. . . #monasteryofsaintsimon #cavechurch #cavechurchcairo #church #cairo #cairoegypt ##mokattanmountain #christian #christians #mustsee #mustvisit (at Mokhattam Mountain Cave Church) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2j_eakHdh9/?igshid=19o00pdwxpdpq

When the cavemen of Sassi di Matera were converted to Christianity, they needed cave churches. I discovered one of them while trekking on the mountains. Here's the front of the cave church. Those are cacti growing on the roof. Inside it's just a cave with an altar and a faded cross painted on the wall. #cavechurch #church #neolithic #architecture #troglodyte #sassidimatera #matera #italy (at Sassi di Matera)
