PSA/PIA Thingy Part Something or Other, the continuation of food issues: CAFFEINE

Once the intestines absorb caffeine into the bloodstream it usually increases adrenaline levels in the blood, making the brain and body more alert. It also causes increased blood flow due to minor vasodilation. Basically it relaxes the blood vessels so more blood can rush through the larger diameter tubes. The vasodialation is most acute in the blood system around the brain and in the bronchial tubes in the lungs, making it feel like you think faster and breathe better. It is important to note that feel has to be distinguished from actually does. Caffeine is a mildly psychoactive substance. Most notably it prevents the brain from absorbing the adenosine by sticking into receptors in its place.
Adenosine is a neurotransmitter that functions as a central nervous system depressant. It builds up in the blood over time based on the wake / sleep cycle. As more and more adenosine is taken up into the brain, it tells your brain to be sleepy and to be less reactive to things calling for attention. Essentially, it’s one of the main ways your body tells itself that it is tired and to act accordingly.
By binding in the same receptors that would connect with adenosine, caffeine doesn’t literally wake you up, it blocks the information that you are sleepy and therefore makes you perceive yourself as less tired. It changes what you think not what you actually are. This makes it the most commonly and frequently consumed psychoactive substance on Earth because people use it every day to override their perceptions about how they’re actually feeling.
It’s temporary vasodialation is also why caffeine is frequently used in relation to headaches. The body frequently activates vasoconstriction in response to the things that give you headaches. IIRC it is to try and prevent heat build up in the brain. But the actual symptom of “headache” is frequently just that vasoconstriction, that tightening and pressure of the blood vessels. Caffeine through a chemical reaction with the cell walls forces the blood vessels to relax for a little bit. Thus, while not curing what is causing the headache, making the pain of it ease off. Unfortunately, when the chemical reaction wears off, there is a rebound and the return to chemical balance actually causes vasoconstriction. In comparison to the sort of constriction that people take medicines like Excedrin for it’s usually mild and not much of a problem. It feels like just part of things easing off and getting better as it all heals up. However that is part of discussion over whether or not Caffeine counts as addictive. Because anyone who regularly ingests caffeine is also regularly being punished by the caffeine’s absence by a very mild headache from the rebound vasoconstriction. So it’s not physically addictive but may be psychologically addictive because it is constantly giving you the carrot and the stick by its reactions with your blood vessel walls, teaching you that having feels good and not having it hurts. BUT as long as your intake is mild, the evidence isn’t great for that right now. High intake of caffeine over extended periods of time can cause physical withdrawal symptoms like severe headaches and feeling like you can’t breathe as well as you’re used to.
Severe intake of caffeine can cause the same type of symptoms of any other neuroinhibitor such as shaking, heart palpatations, “asthmatic” attacks, and abnormal thought patterns.

Though I should say that even mild withdrawal can cause irritability. So it’s really important to stress that Caffeine has a psychological effect, even under normal circumstances.
But all that is the Usual reaction to Caffeine. The average. Everyone’s reaction is a little different because everyone’s biochemistry is a little different. Things can be worse.
For someone with a Caffeine intolerance, mild doses can lead to extreme effects. Even a little Caffeine can lead to:

Heart Palpitations
Fast Heartbeat while at rest
Temporary High Blood Pressure

Essentially, they get similar reactions as overdose effects at very low doses.
It gets worse at Caffeine allergy. As an allergy you can get most of the negative effects above at lower doses. The one exception appears to be that Caffeine Allergies tend toward not producing as much negative lung response. It’s not non-existent but it is rare, unless full anaphylactic shock occurs. Which is an unusual trait of Caffeine, doubly so because of how it regularly effects the lungs.
Allergies to Caffeine can get the following additional effects beyond intolerance effects:
Chest Pain
Cold Sweats
Dizziness
Anger
Joint pain
Muscle Aches
Nausea, intense abdominal pain, and/or vomiting
Skin problems such as hives, eczema, rashes, acne, severe itching
Numbness in the face and hands
Anaphylactic Shock
Coughing
Swelling of the eyes, lips, face, & tongue
(W/ both Anaphylaxis & Swelling) Difficulty breathing
Difficulty with Focus and Concentration
Difficulty forming Speech
Depression
Hallucinations
Possibly: Dim Vision, Transitory Blindness, and Eye Flickering
These effects can start as soon as 2 minutes after ingestion of Caffeine. They usually occur within a 2 hour window if they’re going to occur.
In the end, while Caffeine is mostly safe for the majority of people, it is in the top 10 foods that might give you a problem if you consume it. If you’ve been having it over years with no issues you are almost certainly fine in terms of severe intolerance and allergy. But it is still possible to have a very mild intolerance and not notice it. And we are all at risk of the overdose and too high intake over time issues.
Caffeine is also a purine which means it has rheumatoid arthritis effects. But as far as I can get out of my rheumatologist it’s just complicated. It looks like in some ways it might help the development of problems while in others it seems to counteract the problems. So it is a little unclear and it matters a LOT how you consume the caffeine. According to my rheumatologist you can have regular coke / pepsi / whatever & you can have coke zero sugar / pepsi zero sugar / whatever zero clearly unnatural soda and it shouldn’t cause more problems than it prevents. BUT Diet Coke & Diet Pepsi will make it much more likely that you’ll have nasty outbreaks. Because the caffeine is paired and interacting with the other chemicals in the drink. Aspartame can be an allergen all on its own, causing skin rashes and the like, and if you’re allergic to both, it’s just not good. Thankfully the odds are quite low that any given person will have an allergy to both.
Essentially, yes, Caffeine can cause negative effects, the likelihood on average  is that any given random person will be immune to the effects as long as they consume in moderation, but Caffeine actually effects a lot more people negatively than the random substance. Probably in part because it has such a high consumption rate. Anyone who regularly just doesn’t feel their best, particularly due to tiredness issues, frequent headaches, or/and irritability would probably benefit from trying to be off of caffeine for 90 days to see if they improve. If it causes nothing but a craving for more caffeine, then it is almost certainly safe to go back to having it. But if symptoms clear up, hooray -_- then it’s the mixed bag of giving up a beloved food for the return of feeling better. And as Caffeine is cut out for the purposes of health over a longer and longer period of time, it will act more viciously on the occasions that it is consumed. So, yeah, yay -_-
