Tag game: List Your Top 5 Favourite Anime Characters, Then Tag 10 People!

If I had watched the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, Atem and Akefia would be at the top here, but I’ve only read the manga (and watched S0) so I decided to give the spotlight to some of my other top characters! And I liked how you gave little explanations for your picks so I’m doing that too~ (tho they pretty much boil down to “cute” or “#relatable” or both)

1. Yuusuke Makishima (Yowamushi Pedal)

Socially awkward and can come off as hostile/creepy, but he’s really sweet! Tries his best to be a good mentor to the main character, Onoda. Awful fashion sense and he used to have little cooking segments at the end of the episodes which I really enjoyed. Probably autistic. Also, there are relatively few anime characters with visible birthmarks, so that’s nice to see.

2. Akira Midousuji (Yowamushi Pedal)

Creepy, but in a strangely cute way! Really rude and mean, even to his teammates, and cares more about winning than anything else, but there are hints of a good heart buried deep down. Definitely autistic. Also his backstory made me cry. :’)

I have little charms of both Maki and Midou hanging from my car/house keys! 🌸

3. Honda-san (Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san)

He’s got a skull for a head and really tries his best to be helpful and polite to everyone, what’s not to like? Deserves a vacation.

4. Ichimatsu Matsuno (Osomatsu-san)

Tired and depressed all the time, with a love for cats? Wow, same.

5. Takeo Gouda (Ore Monogatari!!)

Gentle giant, really considerate towards both his crush and his best friend! Drinks respect women juice every day.

I chose to talk about Gekhath bc he’s the most fleshed out:

Gekhath is a gûrd, a race in the Swedish RPG Eon. They’re basically a mix between goblins and Tolkien orcs, and looked down upon by pretty much everyone else (both literally and figuratively). Our DM rolled for our characters’ backstories, and Gek got the short end of the stick. He was a part of a pirate family, but they all got killed by a human soldier in a nasty bar fight. Gek was about 9 at the time, and survived by hiding in a cupboard. Of course, an event like this would traumatise anyone, so I ran with it.

His goal from that day on was to find the soldier and kill him, for revenge and closure (maybe that would make the nightmares stop, too). He found some of his family members’ tusks on the tavern floor, and made jewellery out of them, to honour his family and to have it serve as a constant reminder. To keep himself alive he turned to pick-pocketing, and later burglary. A dwarven woman, who was an outcast as well, had come to be somewhat of a mother figure and provided him with some much needed emotional support.

But a life lived with little more than hate in one’s heart is not healthy. If he doesn’t learn that, I’m afraid he will meet a tragic end (I have three different death scenarios thought out as of now).

He finds a bit of solace in believing in the trickster god, Whatstheirname (I don’t have the source books rip). It is somewhat comforting to think that the world, with all its suffering, and its abundant comfort for the lucky few, is not part of some pretentious “grand plan” by an almighty being you’re still supposed to worship for some reason - but simply the result of a god fucking around, not expecting any thanks.

Gek may act tough and hostile, but you can bet he cries at night.

7. three words from your native language that you like the most?

I haven’t really thought about it before, so these aren’t my absolute favourites, but the words that pop up in my head are: sötnöt (cute nut, a dorky term of endearment), älv (river, I think it sounds pretty), and puttefnask (little boy, it sounds silly, and both putte and fnasker mean little boy so it’s like a Moon Moon situation, in addition to this the word is also often accompanied with the word little - so ditt lilla puttefnask can be translated as you little little boy little boy, but fnask on its own means hooker...).
