40:51 - CELTIC STORY
A setting of a poem written by a Mr M Edgerley which he submitted to The Observer (Queensland, Australia) in 1924.
The poem is titled “A Returned Soldier’s Lament”
I’ve renamed the song 1924 partly because I have made small changes to the text - and have added a verse, but also the date is really significant to the meaning of the words. The poem references WW1 from that date: being 6 years after the war ended, 9 years after the majority of the ANZAC troops joined the war and 8 years after their greatest involvement and losses both at Gallipoli and all along the Western front.
Oh - and it’s going to be on our next duo album that will be out sometime this year. Caveat warning, however; - we’re so busy doing a load of other things - including the beginnings of a new Purcells Polyphonic Party album as well as festivals and folk clubs and recording for TV and games…. that any plan for launching is going to have to be quite vague.
44:20 - Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer "1924"
50:12 - THANKS
51:48 - Paddyman "The Best Pub Party in the World" from One for the Road
54:36 - Kellys Wayke "Walk the Mile" from Kellys Wayke
58:10 - the commoners "What's Your Whiskey For" from What's Your Whiskey For
1:01:42 - Michael Maloney "'Round the Mountains of Mourne" from January Hopeful
1:05:32 - CLOSING
1:07:11 - The Druids "South Australia"
1:09:35 - CREDITS

Scott McCreary replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Hey Marc I listen to the Irish and Celtic music podcast while whittling and or wood working, cutting the grass in my two acre yard or at break time at my job at Amazon. This St. Patrick’s day I don’t really have plans but will definitely have corned beef for supper. I may get ambitious and make a coddle or stew at some point.
I have always heard that you don’t choose Ireland. Ireland chooses you and that’s my case. I am an Irish descendent but have never been to Ireland. I eat up all I can about it I.e. the language, music, movies and pictures and culture. I celebrate Ireland every day "
Marguerite Kearns replied: "I am just listening to the content of your songs and music. Doing nothing else. Some things don't fit well with multitasking...you fit into that category. Onward"
Michael Corbett emailed: "Hi Marc!
This is Michael from Seldom Sober. You were a great supporter of ours when we released our last CD in 2019. I'm sorry to tell you that Colleen, the other half of Seldom Sober, is having health problems. It would really lift her spirits for you to play one of her tune sets. Since our last CD was 4 years ago it doesn't get much attention anymore, but she loves hearing that we're being played around the world. We were actually big in New Zealand when the CD first came out. Just let me know which episode it's on. She knows I listen to your podcast, so I'll just tell her I heard it
Thanks for your consideration! Please keep up the good work! You sponsored the main stage at the Savannah Irish Festival in 2019, and we appreciate that!”

They never made us feel that it was too small of a project even though they were busy with much larger projects at the time. We were impressed with how detailed they were and how they allowed us to be very involved in the process. We were very pleased with the whole experience... Our door is a staple of our home!"- Sarah B“My first exposure to Vintage was meeting Amos Fisher to inquire if they could replicate the front façade windows of a 1913 building I was restoring [the West Reading Motor Club]. Amos and Daniel Glick were wonderful to deal with and replicated the exterior and interior window moldings and updated the windows with insulated glass. Their craftsmanship was so outstanding they were asked to do a number of additional projects at this site. In 2020, the restoration won a Pennsylvania Main Street Townie Award for best restoration. Subsequent to this project, I reached out again to Amos for building custom front and garage doors for a new Craftsman-style residence. These doors make the new home stand out. They are great to work with, and their quality is superb.”- Frank CocuzzaDownload Our Brochure

Drag kings
#Drag kings series#
"When I first started, there was still a lot of people who didn't know what a drag king was or had never seemed to have heard the term before," said British performer Sammy Silver. While drag kings arguably have just as long a past, they have not enjoyed the same level of recognition or popularity - although that now appears to be changing. Male actors cross-dressing on stage have a well-known history going back to William Shakespeare's era and gay men performing in hyper-feminine drag have long been a part of the LGBT+ community. "I think he's really exploring his maleness and what it means to be a man in the 21st century." He's not massively confident, oddly enough, although he does love the stage. "Adam is more flamboyant, he's more cartoony, more fun-loving, dancey. "Once I've got the suit on and the shape looks right and the face looks male, I don't have to change my character very much at all to present completely and believably as male," Powell told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Powell is among a growing number of drag kings - mostly female or transgender performers playing exaggerated male characters – in a previously niche LGBT+ performance scene that is booming in popularity across much of the Western world.
#Drag kings series#
But they have also performed on TV in the Starz show Vida, the Amazon series Transparent, and American Horror Story: 1984.Carefully painting in sharp cheekbones and heavy eyebrows before applying a moustache and a final sprinkling of glitter, Jen Powell slowly transforms into male alter-ego Adam All ahead of a performance at a London club. Vico has performed as Suave in clubs through LA. When I am performing Suave, it is me in the most raw way.” When Ortiz created Suave, they cited men like Ricky Martin as inspiration.įor Ortiz, performing Suave brings a feeling of completeness: “I found within my performance the intersection of all of me: my culture, my music, my dancing. In many ways, Suave is a tribute to Hispanic/Caribbean culture. He wears loose-fitting floral shirts that are open to the waist, tight pants, and gold jewelry. On his upper lip, he sports a delicately pencilled-in mustache. He sports a foppish haircut with short sides and long black curls that drape over his forehead. And he doesn’t take himself too seriously: goofy is the new sexy.” His hips don’t lie and will make love to you silly all night. Vico Ortiz describes their drag king persona best: “Passionate! Dramatic! Romantic! He’s the sensitive Latino lover you dream about. In 2021, you’ll be able to watch Murray Hill on several TV series: Amy Schumer’s Life & Beth on Hulu, Bridget Everett’s Somebody Somewhere on HBO, and Paul Feig’s This Country on Fox. Murray Hill takes his role as a trailblazer for the community seriously, and encourages those who have come after him, “If you don’t see yourself represented then go out and represent yourself.” Instead he says, “I’m Murray, just Murray.” In so doing, he has become a symbol of nonbinary and genderqueer performance that transcends drag. No, Murray rejects all pronouns and identifiers that would put him in a box. But here’s the rub: Although he is a leader in the drag king community, Murray Hill does not consider himself a drag king. With slicked-back hair, windowpane suits, horn-rimmed glasses, and polyester ties, his persona recalls not the drag kings of the present but male impersonators of the past, such as Stormé de Larverie. He’s a fast talking, magnetic ad-libber with such control over his audience that he can take them from silent to rolling in the aisles and back in seconds. The legendary Murray Hill looks and behaves like a mid-century old-school comedian in the vein of Don Rickles, Shecky Greene, and Shelley Berman, who frequented resorts in the Catskills. In addition to performing internationally, Adam All hosts the drag king cabaret BOi BOX and co-hosts the drag king competition MAN UP. Jen Powell, who created Adam All 12 years ago, tells them., “He’s a gentle man who can charm and alarm with equal appeal, bringing live vocals and cartoon realness to his dashing geek-chic cabaret.” He moves with gusto from one punchline to the next, enchanting his audience and giving them an experience that is at once lighthearted and profound. Adam’s performance is a watertight, high-energy act. Known as the modern “Godfather” of the UK drag king scene, Adam All is arguably the most influential drag king presence east of the Atlantic, both as a performer and an advocate. I hope to encourage others to do the same and find freedom in expressing who they truly are.” - Jen Powell, creator of Adam Hall As an androgynous individual and as someone who considers themself to be gender-neutral, Adam allows me to embrace my masculinity and through him. “He has allowed me to embrace aspects of my personality that, since my childhood, I had felt forced to ignore.

the places you will be from [IT - Movies] 2/2
Pairing: Richie Tozier/Eddie Kaspbrak Rating: Explicit Warnings: None Other Tags: Post-canon; Fix-it; Everybody lives; Coming out; First time; Nightmares Wordcount: ~8k; ~15k overall
CHAPTER ONE ON AO3
CHAPTER TWO ON AO3
They toast the Loser’s Club of 1989 with whiskey that tastes expensive, that burns a smooth path down the back of Eddie’s throat and warms him from the inside. He’s feeling a little buzzed by now, although the food has slowed it some. Flushed warm and loose in a way that makes him feel like doing something reckless. What, he doesn’t exactly know, but he finds himself glancing back toward the bar as he helps Stan and Ben clear up the detritus of their dinner, folding the empty boxes over to jam them in the garbage and swiping up the grease spills with napkins. Not a single staff person has come out to bother them.
It’s like a ghost house. Like if he tilted his head just the right way, the moth-eaten finery around him would fade into rot and ruin.
He shudders and pushes the thought away. Pennywise is dead. There’s no magic left here. The night receptionist probably just doesn’t get paid nearly enough to deal with their unhinged asses, and Eddie can’t blame them.
Richie is leaned up against the bar next to Bev, nodding thoughtfully at something she’s saying. Eddie can’t stop looking at him—the unfamiliar angles of his face, the threads of gray in his hair and beard. It’s like a puzzle. He doesn’t even know what he’s looking for. Richie has aged: of course he has. They all have. Eddie has, too. Eddie wears orthopedic inserts in his shoes and has to be careful about his cooldown stretches and has recently started to notice that his stubble has gray in it on the rare occasions that he lets it grow in enough. The last time, he thinks, was at some nightmarish weekend team-building retreat in the Catskills.
They all got older. They all grew up. There’s no reason that looking at Richie in particular should make his stomach knot itself up like this.
Eddie crumples up the last of the napkins and drops them in the garbage, then goes into the hallway bathroom to wash his hands. Inside is dim and claustrophobic; it smells like rose potpourri and hard water and dust.
His reflection looks washed out, the black bristles of stitches stark on his cheek. There are bags under his eyes and his lips are chapped. He’s definitely looked better. But somehow, this is the first time in recent memory that looking at his own face in a mirror hasn’t felt like looking at a stranger.

Charles Turner, Marcus Scott & Sean Mason in MELANIN or THE IN CROWD July 31, 2021 at Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre
A Brand-New Musical in Concert at Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre
Wrapping up a recent Artists’ Residency at the Catwalk Institute with pianist/composer Sean Mason and playwright Marcus Scott, Brooklyn-based vocalist and composer Charles Turner will present a one-night only “tasting” from the project they’ve all been creating together. This will be the very first airing of selections/songs from “Melanin or The In-Crowd”, an exciting new musical theatre piece in its nascent stages, to be performed live at Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre on Saturday evening July 31 at 8:00pm.
Over the course of a weekend, a cadre of young, upscale, globetrotting professionals gather for one last hurrah in and around NYC’s lounge scene. Celebrating the newfound success of one of their own who has received a lucrative job offer overseas, the coterie spends an unforgettable weekend, touring various nightclubs in an endless cavalcade of booze, hookups and cheap thrills.
Inspired by the classic golden age MGM Hollywood musicals, but filtered through a modern lens, this splashy new musical encompasses a variety of musical styles such as blues, jazz, swing, big band, jazz fusion, progressive soul, psychedelic soul, cinematic soul, Sophisti-pop, quiet storm, urban, doo-wop, hip-hop soul, neo-soul, alternative R&B, funk, dancehall, reggae, highlife and afro pop. “Melanin or The In-Crowd” is a postmodern coming of age rom-com that explores themes including millennials and the youth of America, materialism, consumerism, capitalism and commodification, classism, colorism, selfishness, respectability politics, depersonalization and dating in the digital age, sexism, sexual freedom, and modern love, all through the prism of black bourgeois culture.
The multi-faceted Turner has performed at such venues as Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Birdland, Smoke Jazz club and the historic Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem. Mike Tyson remembers Boricua Trainer Nelson Cuevas. Nelson was my best friends Cachito trainer at the Apollo Boxing Club/Gym in the Bronx..... Reposted from @miketyson We lost one of the best people in the boxing world. Nelson Cuevas died from complications with Corona Virus. I had my first amateur fight at his Apollo Gym. He use to be one of Cus’ fighters when he was younger. When Cus had his Catskill fighters come down the Bronx to his gym, he protected us so fiercely. I remember us kids would be so excited because when we had an exciting fight he would buy us soda and a mini hotdog in a biscuit because he knew we didn’t have money. It was the best years of my life being around Cuevas and watching the Puerto Rican fighters. They were such showman. I tried to personify their machismo showmanship. People that knew Nelson knew he was nobody to fuck with. I love and respect him so much. Being around him during my amateur career was the best time of my life. Rest In Peace. Something from the files about my late friend
In Finkel’s Shadow
When I first came to the city in the late Sixties I began hearing about Ian Finkel, the xylophone virtuoso. Just before I met him I knew he had gotten a break, an off-Broadway show, Dames At Sea, featuring Bernadette Peters (also a break for her) that was playing at a small theater on Christopher Street. I learned that he was quickly bored with the part he was issued and had begun adding to it. Fine for him, but it discouraged subs, who, after having seen Ian’s performance, decided they could not put in the time to learn the new and improved book. When they bailed I’m sure Ian heard some inventive excuses. (The favorite aunt in Maine who had suddenly taken ill, etc.)
Bernadette Peters became a star, as did Ian. Some time passed and I’d never have guessed that he and I would end up on so many of the same gigs. Nor would I have ever imagined that one day my son would buy the house Bernadette grew up in, on Woodhaven Boulevard.
It was during that downtown run of Dames at Sea that Ian met Cheryl Allen. She was ushering. It was kismet. She was not yet twenty, I later learned. He was slightly older. After a brief courtship they married. Being a consummate practicer (five hours a day) Ian took his xylophone on their honeymoon. Life went on. Ian and I became parents at about the same time. Our sons would later work together, as business partners.
Ian and his brother, Elliot, gave recitals, xylophone and piano. The concept of actually getting your name out there through recital-ing puzzled me. I didn’t see the connection. Ian said he thought of the recitals as an investment in the same way, he said, you’d invest in a business. I recall attending one of them. The dad, Fyvush, (a comedian of some note who had yet to hit his stride as a famous TV character actor [Picket Fences, etc]), was standing by the box office, playing the role of greeter. It was an especially vigorous performance, both brothers playing with, what might be called (ahem) gusto. Did their recitalling get them work? I don’t know. They were going to find work one way or another.
My first jobs with Ian were at Madison Square Garden. I had gotten on the contractor’s list. This was the house band. We had a good run there until, inevitably, all of the shows would “go to tape.” I hasten to add that I was warming a chair for Richard Horowitz, who took off from the Met Opera to play “the outside work” whenever possible. It was during this time that Ian and I spent a lot of time together and talked about music, books, movies and the like. He liked my book recommendations and still talks about it.
A friendship grew. Some projects that followed might be described as unconventional (to say the least). On hearing about a prize contest for a new one-act opera we attempted to write one. Mercifully, any trace of this project is lost.
Ian decided to play club dates and we started at the very bottom, the bungalow colony circuit in the Catskills. This group began as Ian (on vibe), Elliot on piano, me sittng behind the drums. We wanted a bass but the agent said Elliot could take care of that with his left hand. Funny. We later added a bass. These were rustic settings. Finkel would later joke that one of the venues was so far in the woods we were reviewed by Field and Stream. .
The Finkel brothers and I later found ourselves together playing in the concert band led by Dr. George Seuffert. As with the Dames at Sea experience so many years before, Ian, doing the mallets, kept expanding his role. He often played solos, accompanied by his brother. To make the experience (that is, his experience) more interesting, Ian appropriated pages (with permission?) from the flute and piccolo book to play on the glockenspiel.
One story comes to mind.
At one point Ian lifted the combined flute parts for an arrangement (you might say bandstration) of “Rosenkavalier.” Ah...it was the memorable Presentation of the Rose scene in which the band accompanied a pair of singers. One scorchingly hot Sunday in July Ian decided to take off and it was decided that I (though under great protest) would move over and sub for him. Finkel rarely took off and the conductor had by this time gotten used to Ian's glockenspiel additions. At the morning rehearsal (prior to our weekly outdoor afternoon concert in Queens’ Forest Park) I struggled with the combined flute parts, with all of those double sharps and ledger lines. The conductor said, solemnly, “You’ll have that by this afternoon.” Ever the good soldier, I resolved to try. While the others broke for lunch I woodshedded. I was getting much of it but not all. I faced humiliation. But just before the concert, minutes before the playing of the National Anthem, dark clouds gathered and it began to rain. Umbrellas opened, for me it was a welcomed sight, like the blooming flowers of spring. Rain! Concertgoers sought shelter. The concert was cancelled. I was saved. I’m not sure I ever told Finkel that story. I’ll tell him next time I see him.

The Tabby cat in the bay window
By Stephen Jay Morris
11/17/20
©Scientific Morality
2005, he was named after Chicago Club slugger: Sammy Sosa
Sammy the Tabby Cat is in his golden years.
In Human years, he would be 80 years old
In real time he is 15 years old
He spends most of his time laying in the bay window
(In the dinning room)
He glazes out the window looking at the highway
Staring at the Walnut tree.
Watching squirrels harvesting walnuts.
Watching birds eat worms in the lawn.
Hissing at neighborhood cats…
Who dare to trespass on his territory.
He yawns then lays down his head.
He falls asleep on his cushion
While the summer sun warms his furry body.
To live in the Catskills mountains…
You must have cat skills.
You have that knack.
He spends his day: Eating, sleeping and chasing-
and chasing phantom mice.
Cleaning your kiddie litter box is a labor of love.
When your time has come to leave this earth-
I will miss you laying in the bay window.
