white underwing (catocala relicta)
– recognizable by the white lines decorating their underwings.
– typically found in the eastern regions of the united states and canada.
– they possess a wingspan of around 7-8 cm, which classifies them as fairly large.
– despite the name, these moths aren’t actually named after their underwing. their name is derived from being white members of the “underwing” moth group.

Hello! I found this fluffy little guy outside my house the other day, was wondering if you might be able to help identify it? Mostly I just wanted to share it with someone who also likes moths. Love your blog! <3
Definitely from the erebidae family. Perhaps a Catocala relicta, or Catocala fraxini?

ok so pardon the, uh, physical blur filter (it's a tumbler!) but my best Moth Theory at this point is: catocala relicta, which is apparently north america's only underwing moth! which, for anyone else who didn't know, means that the parts of the wing that are hidden when the moth is at rest are a strikingly different color from the camouflaging forewings that shield them, and when it flutters up and away they get distractingly exposed, which in theory gives the moth an extra second or two to make its getaway. hard to tell from people's pix if its underbelly &c are fuzzy enough, but the wings are exactly right and it's attested in my area so i'm inclined to think i'm correct?? anyway. a remarkable little beastie. not sure how it got into my bedroom or even neighborhood, honestly, bc apparently it's meant to be hanging out on, like, birches and aspens where it would be well-camouflaged! whereas here we have like. scrubby beach pines etc. but. very neat that it came to visit. 👐

Catocala relicta (White Underwing)
photo: Jim des Rivières
The White Underwing is a North American moth that is part of the Catocala (Underwing) genus. “Underwing” refers to colorful hindwings normally hidden underneath their less vibrant forewings. In this case, the hindwings are a stark black with white accents contrasting against their white, cream, and black marbled forewings. Such marbled pattern distorts the moth’s natural body shape, helping it camouflage on aspen and birch tree trunks.

Here’s yet another moth painting, of one of my favorite local fairy babies. The White Underwing Moth (also known as catocala relicta). They thrive in the lush forests of the north east, and are the masters of disguise (notice how it’s top wings resemble the bark of a white bitch trunk?) This was painted using my @Prima_Watercolor set “The Classics”, except the gold and periwinkle background which is - you guessed it, Kuretake Gansai Tambi (seriously, I cannot tell you guys how quickly I’ve grown to love these. So glad I gave them a second chance!) finished with @sakuraofamerica Pigma Micron pens (gotta love the old faithfuls). Super duper little painting, measure into at only 5.75” tall and 4.5” wide. Not up in my shop yet but it is available for only $20 (+s/h), if anyone is interested please let me known. Can’t wait to see where this cutie finds a home. Oh! And don’t forget to swipe to see a close up, as well as a video of sparkles ✨ . . . . . . . #art #artistsofinstagram #artstagram #dailydraw #drawdaily #artoftheday #artoftranifer #paint #painting #moth #butterfly #whiteunderwing #whitebirch #nature #bugs #bugart #natureart #watercolor #watercolorpainting #watercolour #suisai #aquarelle #acuarela #animalart
