calm/anxious: calm. things are gonna work themselves out and there’s no reason to fret about them in the meanwhile.

cautious/reckless: somewhere in between. he can be somewhat gung-ho and doesn’t shy away from snap decisions, but prefers to actually research and think things through.

patient/impatient: impatient until patience is needed (and at that point, the only thing that can wait longer than Ara is Death itself). he’s not fond of waiting for something to happen, but he sure as hell can wait for something to happen.

outspoken/reserved: outspoken. if Ara thinks something about whatever you’re doing (and he usually does), chances are you’ll hear of it sooner rather than later.

leader/follower: follower. he’s decent at leading people, having the charisma and the mindset for it, but he’s much more comfortable obeying orders and advising the people in charge.

empathetic/unemphatic: empathetic. it’s not quite Betazoid levels yet, but he’s doing his best to get there.

optimistic/pessimistic: optimistic. life is generally good and so are people, exclusions to the rule notwithstanding.

Is SPN actually any good/worth watching? I've seen like two episodes so far and to me it seemed like a Buffy rip-off, except there are no women & everything is joyless and grimdark. Am I wrong? Should I give it another go? Should I just rewatch Buffy and AtS forever and ever?

I wouldn’t class it as a “Buffy Ripoff”, it has little in common with the Buffyverse except for the supernatural setting and even then the creatures in SPN are vastly different to those on BtVS or AtS.

You should definitely rewatch BtVS and AtS forever and ever but I would give SPN a fair go, at least the first five seasons. After that the show unravels fast, but those initial five seasons and the arcs they contain are some of the best storytelling I’ve seen and contain some amazing episodes and characterisation.

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and now that @catlessevercold ( ❤️ ) has kindly given me an excuse to do so...

1. how many hours do they sleep for on average? what time to do they go to bed and when do they wake up?

before the whole Percy-thing started, Taylor went to bed at roughly 10pm like a good, dedicated student, slept for roughly seven hours and got on with the day. there were the odd all-nighters for studying or reading until 4am incidents, but all in all, his sleep schedule was as expected and quote-unquote normal.

ever since Percy happened it’s anyone’s guess whether he got in more than four hours a given night, on the other hand - and even those hours he sleeps, he only very rarely spends just sleeping. (he’s got research projects in the Dreamlands, hmkay?)

in conclusion: circadian rhythms are for suckers. he has coffee.

2. how many blankets and pillows do they sleep with?

one pillow, one blanket, one quilt. this gets a wee bit hot in summer, but he’s accepted that The Aesthetic is more important than his comfort a while ago. (and besides, as long as he makes his own bed in the morning nobody can tell whether the quilt had been tossed over the nearest chair for most of the night or not.)

3. do they snore?

he’s as quiet while sleeping as he always is, which is to say no. (he also doesn’t toss and turn much.)

4. have they ever experienced sleep paralysis?

not that he remembers.

5. do they sleepwalk/sleeptalk?

see above RE: very quiet sleeper. he’s taken to muttering under his breath in the Royal Tongue as of lately, but that’s more due to the research project than anything else.

6. could they sleep anywhere or do they have Very Specific Conditions?

while he technically hates feeling watched, if he’s tired enough he can fall asleep everywhere. see also: park benches, the school nurse’s office, Ganesh’s shoulder.

7. do they have any stuffed animals?

one, and that one’s a recent addition. Briar is technically a phoenix, very much alive and hoards socks under the pillow, but it is also very cuddly and supportive. Taylor wouldn’t trade it for the world. (his old ones where donated when he turned six.)

8. what do they usually wear for bed?

just about this

9. what do they dream about? do they even dream at all?

he used to have the usual “subconsciousness trying to deal with stress” sort of semi-nightmares, but these days he usually changes over into the Dreamlands the second he falls asleep and is otherwise busy. (unbeknownst to him this is both a blessing and a curse, because he has several years of repressed hormones that would at this point gently point out that there is a very good-looking individual in his circle of friends via that sort of teenage dream. alas, he has research projects to complete.)

10. do they have mostly good dreams or nightmares? 

Taylor was / is far too stressed not to have low-key nightmares, even on good days.

11. what’s the worst nightmare they’ve ever had? 

failing all his classes, being expelled from school about it and sat in front of the family council. it usually happens once every few months, resulting in him being unable to sleep for the rest of the night and flinching at his own shadow.

12. what’s the best dream they’ve ever had?

does the library at the Academy count?

13. do they have keep a dream diary?

unless we’re counting the journal in which he chronicles his studies in the Dreamlands, no. (the upside of that journal is that it starts out in English, interspersed with weird symbols, and then quickly segues into only weird symbols. people who do not speak the Royal Tongue will find themselves thoroughly unable to read it.)

14. what does their bedroom look like?

bed (one polster), wardrobe with mirror, desk + computer, several book shelves, doors leading to a small bathroom and the hallway. a pin board next to the desk with several colourful notes and a lesson plan pinned to it. very clean and tidy. largely blues and whites plus dark wood for furniture. a potted fern on the desk, no other decorations. hardly seems lived in. the desk is the only part of the room that shows some sort of wear, as does the keyboard.

15. what do they do when they can’t get to sleep?

read or research something. if he’s especially bored he might complete some sort of homework. these days, he’s as likely to go for another patrol or text Ganesh to see if that one’s up for something.

16. are they a morning or night person?

originally a morning person, now a coffee person. (see above RE: circadian rhythms are for suckers.)

17. do they ever take naps throughout the day?

he’s certainly taken to the habit like a fish to water. before Percy, he very much didn’t. now he tends to sneak them in whenever people aren’t looking, and if it’s just another five minutes.

18. what’s their nighttime routine?

brush teeth, undress, wash. put on pajamas, put the day’s clothing away, check for stray socks. grab a book, go to bed, read for another half hour. check to see if the alarm is set, turn off the lights. from then on out, it’s either a) pretend to go to sleep for an hour or so, dress again, sneak out of the house, transform, go patrolling or b) toss and turn for another hour, fall asleep, wake up in the Dreamlands, set to work.

(in case of a), it’s eventually return, patch up eventual wounds as best he can, put on pajamas, drop onto the bed, pass out.)

19. what’s their morning routine?

groggily turn off alarm, drag himself out of bed, shower. return slightly more alive, give Briar its morning cuddles, dress. breakfast. make coffee for the day. either go to school straight away or spend however long it takes until the car is ready to take him to school reading or going over last night’s research notes.

20. do they share a bedroom with anyone?

yes. Briar.

Dawn Summers (it pains me to admit it but it’s true, I mean, there’s a reason she’s such a polarizing character).

16. Most Unusual Character?

Adam and they really wasted his potential. He was interesting and unusual in the sense that he wasn’t an out-and-out demon, monster or vampire and he was obviously supposed to be a Frankensteins Monster parallel, a creature made of various parts (including human) who didn’t understand his place at first. Pity the show turned him into a one-dimensional, flat character who didn’t leave much impression on the viewer.

17. Most Inspired Storyline?

It’s a single-episode storyline but I really love the storyline of Checkpoint, with Buffy standing up to the Council and refusing to play by their rules, demonstrating how she holds the power and they answer to her.

21. Most Influential Character?

In general Buffy Summers seems very influential, many fans seem to hold her up as a role model. For me personally, probably Faith Lehane, again because I identified so much with her when I was younger.

22. Most Manipulative Character?

Giles, Faith, Willow, Spike.

23. Best Performance in an Episode?

SMG in The Body, her acting is so raw and visceral. Also, David as Angelus in Season 2.

During tonight’s volunteer shift, I had to keep six kittens in a box while a team mate cleaned their cage. (Their mom/foster mom was taking a break from them and just chilling)

due to a mild lack of present day or futuristic characters and @catlessevercold giving me a carte blanche (and my own feeling sappy), let’s beleaguer Taylor some more

1. Would your OC write a sappy love letter? If so, to whom? Would they ever send it to the recipient?

while his default is sarcastic love letter, I don’t doubt Taylor could write the sappiest love letters. he’d also send them, because once you’ve committed to something, you’d better see it through. (they probably would have slight tonal dissonances though because he can’t resist the snark or the self-depreciation.) and let’s be honest, there’s really only one recipient for them.

I swear to god, if Liam pokes his head in and goes “Ganesh!”...

2. Are they a snuggler?

god, yes. he gets pretty physically affectionate even with people he’s just close friends with, but with those he loves he’s all about casual, absentminded touches up until full-blown snuggling... in private. in public, he’d probably expire of blushing. (funnily enough, he’s a lot more blasé about touching people he’s only just (good) friends with in public. that doesn’t mean as much and also he’s out to a grand total of six people at the moment.)

3. How do they show affection?

he lets his guard down. this means both that he’ll be more focussed on the subjects of his affection and that he doesn’t try to make himself smaller than he actually is - instead, he gets more confident about taking up space and touching people, and he’s much more likely to smile or laugh because he isn’t as worried about what the others might think.

long, rambling asides on whatever fascinates him at any given moment - or on some sort of thought that just occurred to him - also vastly increase in number, but that doesn’t surprise anyone.

4. If they were to pack a lunch for someone they loved, what would they pack?

depends on the person it’s for, of course. he may not be able to cook if his life depended on it, but he knows precisely who to ask for advice - and from there on out it’s figuring out what the person the lunch is intended for likes, where to get it from, how to ensure it’s packaged appropriately and what small extras to include. a short, handwritten note to accompany the lunch is the minimum here, as is a small pack of their favourite sweets.

5. Flowers or chocolates?

flowers. it just strikes him as more romantic.

6. Hugs or kisses?

both. both are good. unless it’s in public, in which case hugs.

7. Describe an ideal date night for them.

the less out and about a date night is, the better. just staying in, getting some food and watching a film getting side-tracked arguing over plotholes and forgetting about the film sounds perfect to him. (the film can be replaced by any other activity that can be shared. he’d be just as happy playing a multi-player video game and despairing over his lack of skill, taking a late-evening or night stroll (no, not through the cemetery, really Liam!), or just reading together, pausing occasionally to quote something at each other. he’s mostly in it for the chance to spend an evening getting as much bodily contact in as possible.)

love is always having your back.

9. If they were trying to win someone’s affection, what would they do or say to impress their intended?

knowing Taylor, he’d attempt to say something witty or charming, get flustered, trip over himself (verbally or physically; it’s a 50-50 chance) and proceed to flee the scene. fortunately for him there are enough people who think he is cute when he does it.

10. What do they look for in a partner, companion, or lover?

to be entirely honest, he has no idea. as of currently, he is still grappling with the revelation that men are hot and that he is apparently a sucker for a pretty face. he is pretty sure he has standards somewhere, but as of now he’s mostly distracted by the shiny.

11. Have they ever been in a position to over relationship advice to another? How did that go?

oh god no /Taylor

12. How likely are they to use magical or mystical means to gain insight into or enhance a relationship? Some examples: Visiting a fortune teller to ask about their love life, performing a love spell, etc.

as of pre-Percy he didn’t believe in magic, mysticism or related phenomena. as of post-Percy he is entirely too aware that that might just work and objects the concept of emotional roofies on a fundamental basis.

13. How would they feel about being serenaded? Would they perform a serenade for a special someone (or someones)?

he’d probably find it cute if slightly embarrassing in private and still cute but massively embarrassing in public. (and then there’s the whole thing about not being out.) that said, he certainly doesn’t want to force anyone to listen to his singing voice, and especially not as a romantic gesture - dancing’s another thing though. he could certainly try that one.

14. What is the most important part of a relationship?

being supportive of each other. and yes, this also means checking each other when it becomes necessary.

introvert/extrovert: introvert. he’s gregarious and gets along great with roughly everyone who isn’t turning up their nose at him, but at the end of the day he enjoys his quiet evenings more than another night down at the tavern.

close minded/open-minded: open-minded, especially for an Ustalavian. science! progress! the benefit of the doubt! most Andorians would probably still shudder in horror!

calm/anxious: anxious if impressively calm under fire.

disagreeable/agreeable: agreeable. he likes being liked.

Last band t-shirt I bought: uh. oh gods. that was a while ago. do festival t-shirts count? if they do, I think that was a Paganfest shirt back in... ‘11? or was that that Saltatio Mortis shirt I keep using as pyjamas? one of the two.

Last band I saw live: Experiment of Crime, together with my father. also years ago. I think I’ve aged out of the “I can only understand you if we’re both shouting” segment of evening entertainment.

Last song I listened to: Seanan McGuire’s Wicked Girls. my music taste is probably an Experience, if I take those three last questions together.

Lipstick or chapstick: both. both are good. what do I have a little make up bag in my purse for if I can’t carry both?

Last movie I watched: Gaslighting: The Movie, err, Shutter Island together with @vespapilio​. I kept leaning over and complaining that seeing the Hulk in a suit was disconcerting.

Last 3 tv shows I watched: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (hilarious campy flashbacks to my teenage years!), Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and Leverage. life without a streaming service or a TV lends itself well to reruns of favourites or even better: letting your friends introduce you to their favourites.

Last 3 characters I identified with: we’re going for the easy questions, I see. given that my memory is horrible when it comes to time lines, the best I can do is go for the three that I can think of.

Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer - I do wish I had things together like she does, but do I empathise on the awkward-bookish-teen front. Padmé Amidala, for her interest in politics and side-eying Anakin, at least until that last aspect suddenly flips on its head with no warning or chemistry. and I suppose Emily Fairfield from The Heiress Effect for her relationship with Titus, if one can call that a relationship? that took a turn for the darker.

Book I’m currently reading: I assume we’re discounting Deathwatch rulebooks, so The Achilus Assault is out. I’ve been slowly making my way through A Canticle For Leibowitz for the last half year - does that count?
