i'm a huge believer that like the first week of language classes should include teaching everyone whatever some of the local placeholder words are

it expands the number of ideas you can communicate HUGELY if you know how to say "thing", "person", "that" and "like" because now you can ask for/about anything you can gesture at (what's that thing? what's that person doing? can i have that thing? etc.) or describe vaguely (i need the person for the lights [electrician], i want a thing like that, etc.) and check in if you're doing stuff "properly" (you do it like that? i do it like that?)

Hilarious headcanon I just thought of (at the time I'm writing this, gonna throw it in the queue):

It's pretty reasonable to believe that Carmine and Kieran's native tongue is.... "Kitakamian"? "Kitakamese?" I'll go with the first one for now. And considering Kitakami is based off of an area in Japan, that means Kitakamian is essentially Japanese, but you can interpret it as a different form / dialect of the language.

The other regions specifically based off of aspects of Japan: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, all seem to be distant from Kitakami. As a result, Kitakamian has likely formed enough divergences that someone who knows the language still won't understand any of those region's languages perfectly, but they'll probably know enough to get by.

Now for the funny - Carmine 1000% switches to Kitakamian to really shit talk Drayton if he pisses her off enough since he doesn't know the language. She can say whatever she wants, and does, and he's none the wiser (though he does know she's talking shit, just not what's specifically being said).

Kieran doesn't do this, not until his villain arc. At that point, I think he'll throw out insults towards Drayton - and likely other people - in the language.
