Kitty. Furbeast. Catmeow. Little Grue. Squeakens. Kitty-pie. Meowmeowbottom. Princess Thunderpaws. Mighty Cockroach Huntress.

My husband Evan and I got her in April 2008 from ASPCA in Chicago. She was small, under 9 lbs, but floofy, with one cloudy eye. When we walked past her cage, she rolled over and showed me her belly.

She was an older cat, 5+ years, and the shelter was glad that someone took her. Her nameplate said "Syd" but she didn't seem to recognize it. But when I said "Hi, kitty!" she looked up, alert: yes, i am kitty, hello! So she became Kitty, and a thousand other things besides.

She was the sweetest, most trusting, and most respectful animal we've ever had. It took us years to convince her that she is, indeed, welcome on the couch and the bed. She gave everything we bought her a sporting try: the toys, the catbeds, the food, the catnip. In the 13 years we had her, she clawed up one (1) arm off a cheap couch. The couch was green, and when she lay on it, she somehow blended into it. It was a mystery.

Several years ago, I started giving her prednisolone for her tummy troubles (which we were afraid at the time was lymphoma). Within a few months, the green tint in her fur turned red. Camo kitty became autumn sunrise kitty. Apparently that's a thing that can happen to cats on steroids? This lasted for a few glorious years, and then she reverted to being vaguely green.

She trusted us unconditionally. For most of her 13 years with us, I've had to medicate her for something or other - her eye, her tummy, her thyroid, her joints... Chemo, steroids, ear gels, injections - she took it all like a champ, without claws or biteys. (There might have been some irritable wriggles.) Other folks who had to do the same in my absence were not so fortunate. Kitty was a family kitty in the best mob sense: those who weren't family got whacked, and often bit.

One day, Evan and I went out, and when we came back in the evening, we found her waiting for us at the door, with two sticky yellow fly traps stuck to her fur. They were hanging high over my desk - our best guess is that she jumped up on it to bat at them. And now we had a sad kitty covered in fly traps. We got her in the tub, got in with her, and went to work. Water was not enough to get all the glue off her fur, so Evan suggested we try canola oil. Eventually, we got the glue out. As a bonus, she smelled like french fries for a month.

She was not the most overtly affectionate cat, but she was the most loving. When Evan would tickle me, she came running to the sound of my squeals to bite him. As she got older, her eyesight got worse and her patience with our shenanigans got thinner, so she usually just ended up biting the leg closest to her, which was often mine. But hey, it's the thought that counts!

For most of her life, she was not very close to Evan. He was tolerated as the bringer of foods, but otherwise viewed him with a wary eye. Then the lockdown happened. After spending more than a year with us both for constant company, Kitty realized that GoodFoodsMan was good for scritches as well as foods.

(And oh, what glorious foods they were! No cat has eaten so well as Kitty in her last few months. Sous-vide salmon and mackerel filets from Eataly, thinned vitamin chicken broth, tiny slivers of aged machego - GoodFoodsMan delivered kitty haute cuisine on the regular, arrayed buffet-style on fine china. We never had plates for diner, because they were all on the floor, with Kitty perched in the middle nomming from each one as the fancy struck her.)

She cried a lot over me over the years. Often when I left, Ev tells me she would meow by the door - even if I was only going to the post office. When we came back from vacations, she would sleep on top of me for several nights, so as to prevent me from running off again, and sometimes even climb into our laps on the couch. And when I had my septum surgery, and Evan brought me home groggy and bleeding heavily into my nose packing, Kitty ran in panicked circles under our feet and cried so hard she threw up.

Now it's our time to cry over her. Rest in piece, sweet floofbeast. You were a good, good kitty.
