i figure most human behaviour that, not only doesn’t occur in other animals but has zero connection to animal behavior is basically distantly rooted in the known fear of inevitable death. let me be clear. cats and shit don’t know they’re gonna die. we do. we have thoughts. we know it’s coming. we think we’re gonna be rich, bullshit like that, most humans believe in magic and most humans doubt that math is a universal or consistent thing. total nonsense right. but everyone knows their ass is gonna die. before you write me off as some dumbass reciting basic 101 level university lectures just Trust Me I’m An Engineer. anyways. being human and dying are somewhat one in the same.

MMO. kill monster get loot. sell what i don’t want to other players for gold. spamming chat with “SELLING BOWSTRINGS 200gp” for an hour “sucks” so the devs add a grand exchange where you can post buy/sell orders for a given item+price to maximize gameplay efficiency and minimize social interaction.

like any other MMO you can pay some sketchy website real money for ingame gold farmer by chinese gold farmers. totally against the rules. remember this

so the first thing that comes to any male aged 23-27 mind is “buy low sell high” basic bitch shit. no good. there’s a 5% tax that’ll wipe out your profit margin intended to eliminate this behavior (you’re supposed to friggen kill monsters). but everyone thinks they’re a genius and can beat the system and that there is a secret george soros style illuminati group that is holding the secrets, blah blah blah, whatever, and this comes as a coping mechanism after losing your shirt after trying to beat the market (success rate of 0%).

here is where people mostly quit thinking: if you do the math, which takes about ten minutes and can be done on one side of a sheet of paper with the most basic calculator, it’s easy to figure out that the amount of gold you’d need to play dirty (buy out all the available Feathers or Fire Runes or whatever) in order to corner the market would be so high that there is no possible way for a character to hold that much without having spent IRL money for gold. you’d get autobanned.

SO..finally, go on the ol’ www.reddit.com, and make a really really professional-to-professional sounding post advertising a “service”. Saturate the fuck out of it with dense but very real financial jargon. the “service” (which needs to be obscured enough with plausible and relevant language) is a hedging service aimed at make-believe market players who are buying and selling such huge amounts of items and gold (usually in anticipation of a game update that will speculatively introduce a sudden, dramatic, and capitalizable price change for some item). you need it to be as alien-sounding and foreign as possible but with enough believability and clarity that a handful of reddit jackasses will figure out what the fuck your post is about. whenever pressed further, act totally puzzled and make it very clear that this is not a service relevant to “individual entertainment-motivated” players or some shit. no matter what amount of gold anyone quotes at you, just act puzzled and if that amount is 1/1000th the amount one of your “normal” clients deal with. you need to do all of this extremely artfully. and by “you”, i’ve been meaning to write “me”. really lay it on thick that whatever you’re “doing” is totally unavailable to them and that you want zero to do with them.

so now theyre still mostly totally confused but enough is made clear that their interest is piqued. got my hook in em. some guy will copy/paste wikipedia shit in an obnoxiously long and pseudointellectual, contemptible but characteristically reddit guy style what you’re “selling” actually is in the most exhausting, hand-holdingest way to his fellow reddit gamers. with complete tone of authority.

inevitably one of them will put on their sherlock holmes hat and go deep undercover, emailing me posing as an interested party. bingo. now i get to really lay on the WTF and go off the rails asking about vouchers from One Of The Big Seven, but oh no, you can’t get one of them to vouch for you, that’s fine, it makes sense, we’re the only firm that deals with unvouched, that’s our market, well, one of them at least. Just give me a rough rundown of your entry criteria, dwell time, risk tolerance, fuckin “Gamma Ratio”, you know, all the basic stuff, and i’ll have the team generate a .xlsx for you to plug your data into to get a rough feel for what the final contract might be like.

(lololol) But REMEMBER, that excel sheet is seeded, output is fuzzed and salted and if you share it or try and sell it to our competitors, it will be fuzzy enough to be worthless to them but obvious to us who leaked what. this is the only way we’re able to integrate unvouched clients without untenable premiums and while managing our risk levels

blah blah blah blah, i go on and on and on and the guy on the other end is developing a scab from constant head-scratching. and that’s about the maximum real-world harm i’m willing to inflict. i know this sounds like an elaborate as fuck confidence scam but it isn’t. that shit makes me sick. i’d literally slam my arms in a car door before taking a cent from all this. hell, i’ll go out of my way to guarantee i don’t even piss anyone off or offend them or anything.

Live-read: The Wheel of Destiny #8, Kerubim.

You can find this article on the Dofus MMO's site, by simply googling it.

A bit of context: this is an article, from the series called "Wheel of Destiny," which focuses on small character studies of various ecaflip characters from the World of Twelve. I won't be doing all of them, just the ones that interest me.

It is my decision to start with this in particular, because of the relatively small size of the article, to test out this... reading liveblogs thing. I hope it goes well, and isn't too boring.

I hate Eca so much it's unreal, just so you know.

To make it more obvious which parts are me, and which parts are the article, while you're skimming the post, I turned on my computer's night mode for making screenshots.

And this is what I was talking about in the previous posts, where I said that, canonically, Kerubim's friendship with Bashi started before the Quest of Two Mornings in Episode 3, Strich Hunt.

Very sad to disappoint, but there does not actually seem to be a Croc Ness monster in the Dofus MMO.

Yet another confirmation of the temple being situated in Amakna. (Besides my own geographical estimations while watching the show, and it literally being there in the Dofus MMO.)

It's a long ass way between the temple, and the swamp, but it is realistically doable for two kids, especially if they have a carriage. (Which Kerubim, being the guy responsible for feeding Ecaflip, does have access too.)

"Five-Cat Monte" is a reference to "Three-Card Monte" which is a real thing.

Glad to know Bashi is also very normal and sane as a kid. Also, very glad that older kids, who give lessons, react to things like this by essentially going "Sure, go die I guess."

God, they are so fucking stupid. Anyway, they are talking about some real landmarks here, all of which are also around Amakna, and seem to be pretty accurate to the in-game geography.

...It feels nice to be right.

...I suppose that, despite its faults, the orphan temple actually gives a shit about its disciples not dying. Color me surprised? Eh, I'm mostly joking. It would be very weird if they didn't.

I will spoil things ahead for you: Ecaflip used magic to make Kerubim look like Atcham.

Bashi's reaction to Atcham being "AAAAH NOT THAT FUCKING CREEPY KID AGAIN 😨". The way he pretty much says, "a ghost?? NO. SOMETHING SCARIER. YOUR WEIRD FUCKING BROTHER."

It all implies., So much. It implies so much. I'm still not over it.

I like to think that before they began to hate one another, Kerubim's relationship with Atcham was similar to what he had with Patafiks. Except instead of copying him, Atcham would, idk. Threaten to kill himself if he got any friend other than him? Threaten to kill his friends?

Something insane and jealousy-based like that.

I may be that guy who's very critical of Kerubim, and constantly going "Atcham's sad implied backstory this, Atcham's sad implied backstory that," but you don't get reactions like that by simply being extremely bullied.

You get reactions like that by being That Heavily Bullied Kid With 20 Mental Illnesses Who Attacks People With Sharp Objects.

It is a funny image... that quickly wraps around back to being sad, once you think about little orphan Atcham, who people fucking hate for being a bingus, who has nobody except for his equally-orphaned brother (who doesn't look weird, can actually make friends, and leave him alone, if he wants to. Which he does.) and how at such a young age he got desperate enough to resort to what seems to be violence to protect himself.

Which got him absolutely no help. And also made people look down on him even further.

I think the funniest part of it all is that Atcham as an adult has:

1. The knowledge that hating Kerubim is literally not productive and a weird fucking coping mechanism.

Yet he keeps doing that.

2. A sort of moral compass that's all about protecting and respecting those in the same shit situation as him. (Even if they insult him. He hates that, but he's mature enough to uh.... just shave people against their will about it.)

While Kerubim is like. Still struggling with even saying that he doesn't even hate his brother. Somehow, he's the more emotionally constipated one.

So normal of them.

Anyway,

I think here we can see a bit of the internal growth Kerubim has had, from the time when he was a child, to adulthood.

Joris cannot picture Kerubim being ashamed, or disgusted, by Atcham, despite this article showing him doing exactly that.

It is the reason why I think one of the factors that contributed to Kerubim adopting, and keeping, Joris, was his guilt over whatever Atcham went through, despite how much he likes to say that he doesn't like Atcham.

Joris is different from other kids: small, weird, probably bald. And in any other situation, it's likely he'd develop a complex about it, except his dialogue in the movie specifically implies that Kerubim has put in conscious parenting effort into preventing exactly that.

While it's obvious that Kerubim loves Joris, there are many flaws in his parenting. So him putting a petabyte worth of effort and research into one single aspect of it is... very telling.

Now for a bit of a reach/headcanon: Who's to say that the reason Joris doesn't have many friends, is not Kerubim trying to isolate him from any potential source of shame or trauma? This part, as I've said, is purely speculation/headcanon — but it is an interesting thought.

And Atcham, who was there, and experienced shit like this from Kerubim, is still swayed by Joris's words.

What I think happened between them is that Kerubim, who yearns for societal approval, is afraid of being like Atcham, who is often ostracized and disliked by people for his looks. Besides this, I think Atcham, who was Going Through Horrors, was clingy.

For these reasons, he pushed Atcham away, and it is this betrayal, coupled with Kerubim's advantages in the form of not looking weird and being Ecaflip's favorite, that made Atcham fucking detest him.

What it all means is that Joris isn't necessarily wrong: Kerubim wouldn't hurt Atcham (at least, not unless it's self defense), and what he did was just... trying to save his own skin as kid.

Which isn't exactly malicious.

And I guess Atcham agrees with Joris on Kerubim's incapability of doing harm to him on purpose. Otherwise, he would never be convinced to change his mind.

There is probably a reason for why Kerubim would rather live in a forest, than go back to the temple looking like Atcham. And as I've said, I don't think it's a happy one.

Now think about Atcham doing this his whole life and get sad. Like I just did.

I think that, of all the things, it's most disgusting that whatever happened to Kerubim and Atcham was happening under the watch of Ecaflip, and perhaps even because of him.

I wouldn't put it past him to orchestrate their hatred for each other for fun. Or because he wanted Kerubim all alone, to himself.

I also find it interesting, the way Ecaflip says "once more" here. Implies that it used to be a normal thing for him. I suppose my guesses of Kerubim being disliked by other kids due to Atcham may have some merit.

And god, it makes me so, so sad.

He cares enough to intervene when Kerubim is about to die, which goes against his own rules, but not when it's about his kids' life being fucking awful.

...Maybe Oropo was right.

Do we know if Ecaflip's emotions are even genuine? He is the narrator of this story, after all, and he could be lying. He puts Kerubim in danger many times. Many. Just for fun and his own amusement.

I will take Ecaflip's narration as a straight-forward one, — that he really is feeling these things, but it still reads as manipulation, even if he is doing it for "Kerubim's sake". He's not a good father and never will be one, and these are very cruel lessons.

I will be real, their relationship disgusts me to my heart <3 Amen.

And now we know why Kerubim is... like that. And why his parenting is so overbearingly sweet, controlling, and obsessed with making sure Joris knows he adores him and adores him back.

Perhaps, despite everything, Atcham was the luckier one for not having Ecaflip's "love" the way Kerubim did, but honestly, I feel both of them had it equally shitty.

A true "would you rather sit on an anthill or sit on a cactus" choice.

A Washed Up WoW Raider (from original release Cataclysm) Decides to Dip His Toes into FFXIV Savage Raiding and fails to clear an Ultimate

“This is a pretty easy raid tier.”

Had a subject I decided to write another mostly unedited blog post about. Let’s see how it goes!

So, since I started playing FFXIV I’ve been avoiding high end raiding. After having just completely burnt out on serious content in WoW a while back but still enjoying MMOs I’ve been trying my best to do so. Having felt Heavensward be the point where I still felt the toxic WoW player in me before that finally bled out probably around mid-Stormblood, I’ve been enjoying finding what I can to do. But on occasion I have dipped my toes into Extremes, and that’s always when a boss “hits me” right. Like something about the fight or the aesthetic gets me. Susano’s sword qte got me to clear it on extreme while still ‘current’ content, while the hectic nature of Barbariccia’s fight made me want to try it. But I never tried a savage because well, top content. After all, none of the tiers really spoke to me with their normal mode fights. But when Arcadion came out I just felt something click in. Something in me found the whole tournament arc, each boss having a separate theme, being voiced, and just the implication of what the tactics for savage could be. So I decided to take the plunge.

And decide fuck it, let’s make it a whole blog post because it might be fun.

Black Cat: the guild officer in me rears his ugly head

So, when I was first trying this fight I told some friends who said “Hey, let’s get together some other friends to do it for the hell of it!” So I decided why not? Dedicated people, probably better than party finder. So I waited to see if someone would say something since I figured someone else was ‘leading.’ Well waited a couple weeks and nothing came of it, so I decided you know what. I’ll say a day, see if people want to do it. Sure enough the group members we had were all available so we went with it and…

Got in a single pull in which we wiped on the first mechanic before we quit. So. That sucked. And that should have been it but instead I started to have thoughts. “Oh the schedule’s all fucked.” “I let the group down.” “The guild leader’s going to kill… The guild leader?”

So.

Turns out I may have been affected by my time as a guild officer in WoW having a guild leader who expected a lot more out of me than you should trust someone at that age and would chastise me hard for any mistake I made in leading the b team raids and would do things like guilt trip me into doing heroic content even after I said I was burnt out and needed a break and would then chastise me for fucking up on content I told him I didn’t have the fortitude for anymore. Then would talk down to me when I got rightfully mad because he wasn’t respecting my decision to not try serious content for a bit!

But thankfully a friend from that group was kind enough to hear me out and let me know “This has nothing to do with being a grown-ass man shit like that can fuck you up.” And I think having that moment helped me because.

I then tried it again on my own after leaving the pseudo-static to try it on my own. And I found that I can at least handle long prog parties if I have the time set aside!

Because I was there for 4 hours.

Very funny thing, I was told after a few pulls to go off tank because apparently my invincibility button wouldn’t be up for Raining Cats if I did the thing every group did where you used the button on the first tank buster.

We never made it to Raining Cats.

I don’t even think we made it past Mouser 2.

But I stayed with it, even when we had the group seem to break up temporarily. But due to it I had to eat a late dinner while I waited. The night ended with me hearing the group leader complain to me about how their boyfriend and other raiders had decided to make a static without them and while a nice conversation. Kind of an odd thing to just tell a random person from party finder.

But even though I could do it it got me thinking: do I really have the patience for prog like this? Do I really care enough about pixels in a video game anymore to commit to these kinds of parties that go nowhere? While plenty of people have stories of people who made long lasting friendships over MMOs I uh… Didn’t.

Most people in my guild were probably anywhere from 5-10 years older than me and those within my age group wound up… Not being great. Like a Warrior who would pad meters by spamming AOE on a fight in which doing so made us explode and for some reason decided to roll on a sword he didn’t need and when asked to pass it to the person who did decided to…

Disenchant the weapon and mail him the shard saying “Here’s your sword : ).”

So yeah, all the while this slow progress and my own bad experiences made me say something on twitter.

And a different friend said in response “Hey, we have a free company that’s literally serious savage raiders who try to help players who are new to savage.” So after a day or two of thinking about it I thought.

Alright, fuck it. First few weeks didn’t say much, tried doing more party finder. Then eventually I went into voice chat and talked a bit and eventually they got me into a group and helped me clear (Despite me somehow managing to kill the MT WHO IS SAID FRIEND by going to the completely wrong place). So I thought that was as much time as they could spare and I get hit by.

So, at that moment I found out what Speed Prog is.

Speed prog is when someone takes you into an instance and goes “Alright buddy time for you to learn the entire fight in one lockout because everyone here knows what they’re doing.”

So not much prog story, but due to the above happening I FREQUENTLY forget things in the fight. So now even having done it a few times I’ll say that no matter what. Alarm pheromones gets me. And I can hear you saying “Oh yeah alarm pheromones 1 is bullshit.” NOPE. SOMETIMES 2 FUCKS ME UP. REMEMBER ME. IT’S SUPPORTS AND DPS. NOT LIGHT PARTIES.

Brute Bomber: The Frustrations and Limits of Party Finder

So having been essentially carried through the first two fights I was feeling pretty good, and decided to give a shot at continuing prog before I asked for help and first groups were pretty good, frequent progression forward to the point that I even made my way through Chain Deathmatch 2! Bombarian Barrage might still make me take a sharp inhale every time but I was pretty consistent! So I kept going and find out that…

Fusefield prog? Nope, Final Fusedown prog!

Chain Deathmatch 2 prog? NOPE. Final Fusedown prog!

Fuse or Foe prog? NOPE. FINAL FUCKING FUSEDOWN PROG!

(Stated by a person who took longer than he cares to admit that it’s SLIGHTLY BEHIND THE MARKER for Final Fusedown.)

So I’m talking to the free company I’m in and someone says “Oh you’re that far? Just prog skip there’s nothing new to see.”

So sure enough I join clear parties and find that yes, the only thing I haven’t done is really easy and

So. Many. Are. Still. Final. Fusedown. Prog.

But again, a few members of this free company came on by down the wire and helped me out with a clear so I could be a part of reclears the upcoming week. Where I learned “AH ONE DOES HAVE TO TIME THEIR INVINCIBILITY BUTTON.” Good news, I only ate the last one and died rather than caused a slow death across the party!

Where I may have died and fucked up a bit but HEY FIRST CLEARS ARE LIKE THAT HEE HOO.

Wicked Thunder: Where Confidence is Born

So we’ve gotten to the final boss and in my first party finder pull.

And we die to the first raidwide. And you know what?

Everyone took it well! We just laughed about “Damn, that raidwide does need mitigation.” That’s one thing I’ve noticed from a lot of Party Finders, most people tend to be good sports and try to figure out what’s going wrong over just screaming at each other. Remember how I said it took me a while to figure out Final Fusedown? Well that was fixed because one of the parties figured out I was out of place and told me where I should be on the marker!

And boy howdy did I have fun with those early phases. No matter how much we wiped there was something hilarious to me about exploding during Electrope Edges. Even had someone who was out of place and overcharged me rage quit with this message:

But sure enough Electrope Edge is where things kept getting screwed up, and somehow during stacks I’d always find that things didn’t seem right.

Doing some runs with the raiding friend I found out “OH. FOR STACKS THERE ARE SET POSITIONS THAT AREN’T JUST MY MARKER SPOTS.” And through that I eventually make it to Sunrise Sabbath!

… I mean I was so overwhelmed by it I just stood in the middle and was definitely the reason that one didn’t wind up being a kill and I think shortly after a DDOS hit that caused use to have to stop pulling but HEY I CAN SAY I’VE SEEN EVERYTHING.

So I pushed on on my own and had plenty of characters that were on my blacklist temporarily. Some people bad, some people just obnoxious, and some that are wonderful people playing very well and making up for the fact that my dumbass died twice when I finally got that clear.

But I got the clear. In Party Finder. And I felt a feeling I haven’t felt in a while. That absolute adrenaline rush when you finally get a clear. The music, the tension, the closeness as sword quiver goes out. It’s that feeling of finally getting done with a boss and knowing that you are good enough at the game to do that. And as I did so I kept seeing that despite my zero parse on M4S, despite the mostly grey parses I had, I could tell one thing.

Wow I am better than most people in PF Jesus.

But what makes me say that? Well…

The Pain of Reclears

So, due to scheduling conflicts and one section later reclears started to not happen over in the free company. Which I was fine with might as well try to do them on my own because aftera ll everyone’s cleared this will be painless. Right?

Fun fact, when I did that 4 hour M1S party one of the people leading it said, and I quote:

“You guys are honestly better than most clear parties.”

I.

I thought he was joking.

HE WAS NOT JOKING. OH GOD HE WAS NOT JOKING.

IT’S FUSEFIELD PROG NOW THEY CAN DO FINAL FUSEDOWN BUT NOW IT’S ALL FUSEFIELD.

IT WASN’T EVEN THE HEALERS THEY WERE FINE JUST EVERYONE FUCKED IT UP FOR LIKE 3 DIFFERENT PARTIES AND THE ONE THAT GOT HIT 1% ENRAGE 4 TIMES AND THE RED MAGE KEPT DYING.

Also somehow the Dancer who it was being cleared for was the only one who didn’t fuck up any tactics which is really funny. They might have gotten a zero parse but fuck man good on ya you got your clear and you can only improve.

That includes me I had the occasional messed up Lariat/Dive because I forgot which he was doing I ain’t perfect buddy let that be the lesson here.

Funny enough, M4S was far easier. Party had a wipe (literally my fault can’t even deny I fucked up Midnight Sabbath and murdered my partner because I tried to correct and just wound up confusing him) but like we had a pull where nearly all the ranged and healers died and we recovered and got the clear with that one.

And I main tanked that one! After that one party made me nervous and even got complimented! Because the summoner kept dying (they were aggravated with themselves sorry poor guy ya kept getting fucked) and happened to die during Mustard Bomb 2 leading to only one safe party member which the OT took so I had the opportunity to HALLOWED GROUND AND EAT IT RAW. THANK YOU OTHER TANK FOR LETTING ME MT SO THAT WAS UP SO I COULD FEEL COOL.

That was week 1 of me doing reclears on my own and well. Boy howdy I have some opinions but the most succinct version of it I can give is.

Uptime Sunrise is the funniest, most worthless resolution in the game. It turns a mechanic that might end with one person dying if someone is a little off to one that kills half the party. If your leader has markers even slightly off it means you’ll be dying and not knowing why. And as it turns out if DPS is high enough you can just skip it. It serves no purpose but to be put into the mind of Party Finder that those like what, 3 extra gcds will totally lead to a clear?

My plan had been originally to just clear and be happy, and now I’m BIS and have the mount. So I suppose I feel pretty good. Good enough to have decided to help out with something the friends were trying to do.

Perfect Alexander: Where We Learn Hell is Other People

So, there’s a funny thing people do if you do savage. And that’s that they say “Let’s do an ultimate!”

At first I was apprehensive but decided fuck it, nothing ventured nothing gained. After all, the group seemed pretty good. All people who had been helping me clear or people who already did Ultimates. By the end we had about 9 people so I even had an out if I decided to leave. So I thought.

Well, we had the three greatest problems any kind of group content has: Scheduling, Personalities, and Desperation.

The scheduling was a mess at first. Members who were only available at super late night and at very specific times (if people even remembered they had to tell the group organizer schedules) meant that early on we had a Tuesday night hat lasted about six hours. That got changed eventually to spread out the raid nights a bit more manageable. Unfortunately as it turns out two of our members just couldn’t make any of the times so that’s two down. But seven ain’t bad right? Well…

Personalities was me finding out that two people who were helping me may have, in fact, been big issues in the Free Company for a while and that the leader had finally had enough of their bullshit. This is made worse by the fact that, when I can only imagine they’re being told they’re going to be kicked, they decided to make a post claiming that they were leaving for their mental health. A real scumbag move! So that’s two more down.

Okay, not bad, there’s me sure but we still have three people who have cleared and are helping and someone who has done ultimates before. We just have to find people. And we found two fills who…

Had never set foot in even a Savage fight before. To their credit, they improved fast. But yeah we started to hit a desperation spiral especially with the last bits of problems.

We could not find a Physical Ranged DPS to save our lives. The first one we found was a pretty nice guy, was willing to adjust his schedule to meet raid times and even gave us a resource I used to figure out some of the trouble points like Limit Cut. Unfortunately data center travel screwed him over and he decided to leave the group as not to force us to have to play by the whims of sever availability.

Our second was a guy who just lied about his prog. Just outright lied. Pretty much washed the night, refused to get into VC for a significant period of time, and was gone the next night.

Our ‘final’ person was… So you know that kind of person who talks when they get nervous, and just won’t stop talking? The kind you feel bad for because you know it’s them just trying to keep themselves calm but they’re taking up the entire VC and it’s getting a little distracting but you can’t tell them to try to be quiet because you know that’s rude then one pull they just mute and deafen themselves saying ‘it’s okay I understand this I think’ and then they wipe you multiple times because you can’t tell them what to correct in time. And sometimes they say things that makes it feel like maybe it’s not a nervous habit but they’re a really big problem person who’s self-obsessive and the pull is going and you can’t ask for clear comms because you have no idea if they’ll fold in on themselves or reveal they’re a giant asshole who was just waiting for a fight.

So yeah we never had a consistent ranged DPS and by the end we hadn’t even made it past BJCC by our last week. And our last week was. Bad. People not able to make it, clear lack of interest due to knowing we’re not clearing, and PUGs that were the absolute worst kind of player.

We had some very nice, very understanding PUGs. But that last week our PUGs were RANCID.

So unfortunately, all this is to say we didn’t make it. It’s frustrating but hey it was a fun time for the most part and I’m glad I did it. Which begs the question of the most important question in this.

Is it worth it?

It’s.

Complicated.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a lot of fun and enjoyed prog as I got my shit together and started to do better until we reached a kill for the fights. Frankly if you’re just going in to see if you can just get a kill and call it a day 100% go for it.

But thing is, I’m seeing stuff that turned me off of WoW raiding over the years as reclear nights go on. That kind of thing where you have no patience for people or the way you get advice is very clearly passive aggressive tone that makes its way through text.

As said in Black Cat I know this is all pixels. Pretty pixels but pixels nonetheless. And having not really gained much past finding out I have a weird trauma response to being in a leadership position in serious content from playing WoW I really don’t feel like having to deal with the MMO “and now everyone’s at each other’s throats because the one guy who actually fucked up isn’t owning up to it while someone else also fucked up and he’s trying to pin the blame on them.”

Don’t get me wrong, I think I’ll try to keep up with Savage content a bit. Maybe even keep up with TEA to see if I can’t get a clear and to see how funny it is with all the serious raiders more than likely doing FRU. Just seeing that the faces of raiding are more the same as what they were is something I keep thinking on.

Unfortunately, I’ve also become more aware of the XIV hardcore raiding scene. While I’m not a part of that boy howdy. Again. That sounds like every issue the WoW raiding scene has. Like shit man, I wish the worst of this was just people who clearly are too hardcore minded to understand that some things they want are things only they want. Now I’m aware of abuse and harassment constantly happening and man. Man that’s disheartening.

I’m here to play a game and people fuck up sometimes.

Anyways Here’s Some Random Advice

In general

You’ll die on first mechanic

That’s just going to happen. Raidwides that go unmitigated and wipe people, failed firs things. Give yourself the chance to learn and you’ll find fun in it.

Even if you’re a first time player you’ll find there are hardcore raiders worse than you

No seriously some of the worst people in some of my groups were literally sporting their legend weapons and titles trust me some people are just outright bad at the game because they try to act like the content can’t hurt them.

Try to be nice

I’m still mad about that fucking Viper getting snippy I will double the curse I put upon them just to be sure. Ask questions and own up to mistakes, practice parties know they’re not here for a clear.

No one will remember you (positive)

The people who will remember you are bad frankly are saying more about themselves than you. Like everything above, practice and improve and eventually you’ll get it.

And for Ultimate specifically

It’s a marathon, not a race

Expect these to take weeks or months. Yes you’ll see the occasional ‘I cleared x in 5 days’ or something videos but expect, especially if most of your group is learning, to be in it for the long haul.

As time goes on they get ‘easier’

Fun fact I learned: food and potions don’t scale with sync in XIV. This means that as time goes on these buffs become more powerful, and thus allow you some breathing room. No, you will not bullshit tactics BUT you will have some wiggle room with DPS checks and can have some screw ups with shields and such.

Just because someone has the weapon doesn’t mean they’re good

Some of our worst PUGs were people proudly displaying their weapon. Oh, paid legends you’d think yes? No. These people cleared. Multiple times. And they were frequently the reason for wipes due to not knowing their role. Or parsing. I am at a stage where I can honestly say I think parsers are the worst thing to exist in XIV, and I will always prefer grays across the board but a clear over someone greeding us to death.

So there it is. My bizarre journey of trying to see if I still got it, finding out I have a weird trauma response that I think I worked through with what they call exposure therapy (I think I’m not a therapist I don’t know terms), and then failing at an ultimate as I’m forced like a cosmic horror protagonist to see the truth of the World. It’s an experience! Figured the day before FRU was a good a time as any.

staring any game and experiencing the story for the first time is always fun but with ffxiv it hits different like. i have never in my life seen any talk about the story of this game online beyond “it’s one of the best mmo story out there” and “a realm reborn is really slow and boring”. never have i perceived any of the (assumably) 13 games that come before it, nor any of the ones that come after it in the series.

i just hit level 15 in the main quest and have no idea who and what’s important, and i got jumpscared by a cutscene about some sci fi army and their emo spaceships or whatever after having spent hours getting used to this beautiful fantasy forest. i also saw someone use a tesla looking ass mount running over various squirrels, and i’m really struggling to comprehend the setting of this entire game.

five years ago, some big event happened, and also fifteen years ago, and apparently 50 years ago something happened as well. but the one five years ago is the most important. i think. it was really bad and a lot of people died and the land is still healing and a lot of people died, and everyone needs to tell me this because apparently i didn’t know, even though a lot of people died and the land is still healing. perhaps just a few many people died, and just a small part of the land requires healing, i don’t know yet.

i am going to become a warrior of light, because everyone keeps saying “you’re just like a warrior of light. lol just kidding.”

there are a lot of expansions. what will they even be about. what’s anything about, actually. the only reoccurring character i’ve seen online is some red haired cat boy(?) and that’s all.

I have a PC. It is capable of gaming. So, sometimes, late late at night, when fiance is asleep and the cat is confused that I am not, I like to play a little game called Roots of Pacha.

Last night I was playing this game when my PS5 controller unexpectedly disconnected. I didn't know it would do that if I switched screens, so I do know the cause, I just wasn't expecting it.

While I button mashed trying to figure out what the hell was going on, I apparently woke the PS5 in the other room and managed to purchase Elder Scrolls Online. I have never wanted this game. I have never considered wanting this game. It's an mmo, and that sounds dreadful for people like me who are Bad At Games.

Fucking $60 for a game neither of us wants. Omg. I feel awful. It wasn't my money. It was my fiance's. He thought he'd been hacked, but thankfully I cleared that up. It was me. It was my fault. I didn't know I had done it until many hours later.

He thinks it's hilarious bc he's absolutely spent that amount on games he ended up hating. It's not a big deal to him. Especially since I clarified what happened. I still feel so bad.

I am going to play it. I will give it an honest go. Maybe I'll actually like it, I don't know, I don't think I've ever played an mmo before.

But he's totally chill about it, just removed his card and put a pin on his account since this has shown weird ass purchases can be made without ever laying eyes on the screens to get there. He couldn't even figure out how I did it. It's baffling and to him, funny.

Current Activities in Gaming #225

Had to do some digging for this one. For the past two months I’ve been pretty active on Guild Wars 2. I’ve been active in blogging on MMO’s before, mostly WoW but these days there’s not a lot to talk about without spending a short novel contextualizing everything I’m working towards. One of my general goals is to get one of those flying mounts, but they made the process to be known as one of the most pain in the ass processes. One of the very first things you have to do is collect 21 items around a map that was specifically designed with that very flying mount in mind. You can ‘borrow’ world-placed ones in specific areas but they’re typically high up so you have to traverse some bullshit to even find one at all. Got that out of the way, but it took a couple of hours. And there’s like 80 more steps to go. Jesus. I originally came back to GW2 to roleplay but haven’t found any communities. I found a single RP guild. The initial meet and greet turned out to have been a judging party with some officers in the unseen background talking shit about my style before saying publicly “We’ve seen enough. Zydrate, do you even care about anyone else?” My main character is a fairly stoic, John Wick-esque figure and generally my RPing style (across many characters) is not the type to regurgitate their entire life stories to people they just met. One character I met was almost too quick to talk about the source of their scars through some Asuran torture. My character emoted in such a way that conveyed that this person was an absolute buzzkill and didn’t really inquire further. Logically, my character doesn’t want to peel back a layer of PTSD and be the cause of someone’s mental breakdown in a market square. In reality, players are just itching to drop a short novel about what their characters are all about. I’m not one of those players. Anyway that one guy who said “Okay I’ve seen enough” is also roleplaying a literal Angel. In a universe where that doesn’t exist. I looked up “Angel” on the guild wars wiki and there’s two results: A named NPC in the first game and a named cat in the second. Angels aren’t really a thing, and the character was very quick to point out he has nothing to do with Dwayna (the universe’s stand-in “goody two shoes, health and love for everyone” type God). Out of character I was like “then what the fuck, then?” In character, my main is dealing with enough of her own shit she doesn’t really care to spend time identifying this humanoid “creature” that someone invented because they have a fourteen year old’s imagination they never grew out of. Listen. My roleplaying style is more akin to what Dungeons and Dragons offers. Everyone meets and an inn, but nobody ever drops their entire baggage when first meeting. No, let’s go run a dungeon, slay some Dragonkind and once my character figures out that the people she’s hanging out with won’t just cut and run then she’ll actually open up a bit about herself. And that is a two way street, when she figures out the people around her aren’t full of shit then she might inquire about who they really are. Or better yet, show her through actions. That’s just the kind of roleplayer I am and it’s now something I’m going to have to make clear to guilds in the future. At least on GW2. Moving on. My MMO batteries soon need recharging and I’ve made some recent purchases including Fable 3 and Sifu. I’ll get Sifu out of the way first. I played about 45 minutes of it, and the first level. I suck at it, even at the lowest difficulty. As usual parrying is a pain in the ass. Every game that has it is like “press this button right before they hit you” but I can never really tell what “counts” as before I am hit. I usually end up hitting the button when the enemy’s arm moves but no, way too early. So I just end up taking the hit anyway. So I try to concentrate towards a weapon swing, and I miss anyway and take a hit. Meanwhile Sifu does not fuck around with mook chivalry, many enemies can and will gang up on you if the pathing allows it. So while I’m trying to concentrate on one guy’s arm movements, there’s still like four bitches with bamboo sticks ready to shove up my ass. So, Fable 3. A 2010 game. A few years ago during my last job I actually tried to buy the CD for it, only to find out that Microsoft had basically shuttered the whole franchise from their store and I long since lost the window that it was on Steam for. I googled and googled and the result was trying to make a Microsoft/Xbox Pass account but that didn’t work either. The game just kind of refused to load, and if memory serves it wouldn’t even install. I had even bought a controller to plug into my PC to use for it, to no avail. So I was about 70 bucks down, but I do think I successfully refunded the CD itself for the ~35 or so it cost. But a couple nights ago the mood struck me once again. Not sure why, maybe it was the discovery that Fable 4 is actually being worked on. There’s almost no information on it, just some teaser with landscapes. Might see it next year, apparently. Anyway it got me to googling again and found out that Amazon just sells Steam keys directly. So I drop 20 bucks and plugged it into Steam, and there it is. Just like that, easy. You DO have to jump through some hoops to get it to run on modern machines but it’s mostly just a matter of downloading some special .dll files and dragging it into the game and boom, the game loads. I played it for several hours. I had forgotten how hilarious the money-making snowballing can be. Since I have the meta knowledge of what you need to do to get the ‘best’ ending (you need ~6 million gold), the minute I was able to do the Blacksmithing job I stopped my youtube recording and spent like an hour on that, gained 300k gold, and bought a couple of the most expensive buildings available at the time. I then put the game in windowed mode to watch youtube or play one of my idle games, generated up enough money to do the same thing with even more businesses. With very little story progression off my Youtube recording, she’s currently making around 120k every five minutes, and after two quests she’s sitting on over two million gold. Long before she becomes queen and is stuck with the “dilemma”. I think she’ll do just fine. Everyone hates her because rent is so high but the in-game morality has her squarely in the middle because I keep taking the “nice” options in quests, mixed with the occasional execution. Why spare a bandit leader who’s been terrorizing and murdering people for years? Warrior’s promise? Fuck off, dude, I don’t know half the atrocities you probably committed. But it’s a lot of fun. Fable 3 still gets a lot of shit for being the “worst” one but to me it’s the most memorable. The leveling mechanic is a downgrade and the fact that the menues are made to be a bunch of rooms you have to walk around in instead of just giving me a simple goddamn menu is a huge step backwards in UI design and user friendliness. That’s about it. I hate the “pause” menu more than the leveling mechanic but ultimately it just takes some getting used to and functions the same. As long as I can change my weapons midfight if I have too, then whatever. Just takes a pointless extra amount of time. So far it’s still the game I loved back in the day. In the future I have my eyes on: Thief Simulator 2, Darkest Dungeon 2, Diablo 4. DD2 is available now but waiting on another payday for it. Also giving the modding community some time to “cook”, as with DD1 I liked to get a few QoL mods that made my gaming life a little easier. Maybe modders will add new characters and classes like last time as well, those are usually fun to play with. Diablo 4′s leveling curve, if the beta is anything to go by, looks a bit slower paced that D3′s so it seems like a game that might demand more of my time on a day to day basis than some of the other things on this post. Might absorb me quite a bit, but I hope to give it a little more breathing room and not rush the endgame as hard. If there really is much of one at all, yet. And Thief Simulator 2 is just more Thief Simulator which I loved, but never really beat because the Rich neighborhood got too hard, but still loved it before that.

Some things about State of Unreal 2024.

animation short won an Oscar or smth.

got me curious to try UEFN, especially because from April all UEFN creators will have a free year of Marvelous Designer. UEFN also supports Metahumans import at least for npc now.

Connect store for the Marvelous Designer has a lot of free stuff, which is now more compatible with Unreal Engine. The temporary license above probably doesn't include Unreal Engine itself usage, but I guess it will be ok to just import a couple of costumes etc.

I lack space on PC, but once I'll clean it up a bit, I want to seriously roam around UEFN features, even tohugh my primary objective is always Unreal Engine.

The UEFN part allows to earn while basically being a total noob and a modder, not fully dev like with UE. It is still awesome tool for prototyping and for younger gen to learn. It also has its own programming language (verse, which is also coming to Unreal!). I kept skipping UEFN because I do not play Fortnite and am not particularly interested in working on fan art/modding stuff, my aim is always commercial. But it seems worth checking now.

Oh, and Lego Fortnite looks very good, will check all the related experiences as well. also a lego cat game? they know how to sell it..

Apparently Connect + MD is a good side hustle idea. Both are more applicable to some people I will suggest it to, not me.

It was also cool to see a lot of women of the industry presenting new features they use themselves as well as being in lead positions for some of the very well known titles etc. I do not watch much of such conferences, but what comes to mind from such instances is only actress from Hellblade coming to stage and some indie devs.

Overall, so much stuff to check out and to wait for next, I am very glad I have a bit of knowledge and experience to ride the Epic train for this long instead of only hopping into it now. Years ago I chose engine for gamedev, I made a right choice. The stuff the team delivers for the community for free is just insane.

Ahh right i owe a Guild Wars 2 What lies beneath post..

SO!! Good things first: the suggested topic of the following who-knows-how-many installments. I really didn’t expect Arenanet, and i’ll go further: ANY mmorpg to EVER even come close to smelling a single WIFF of the mental state their main character is in due to the things the writers and the players put them through. I think it’s a great idea, just like when they killed the commander in PoF. It was ballsy, dramatic, and payed off well. If they can repeat that i’m gonna kiss my monitor for granting me the privilege to see this with one character twice.

The jokes were funny, the animations (exspecially charr eating ramen x’‘‘D if you haven’t seen it yet, look it up. it’s so funny and adorable and real), the connections between the rag-tag team we got for ourselves now. A+

Icebrood Saga started out great just like this, and due to poor planning and a sudden steer of the wheel we all know how that panned out. Eventhough the charr and the norn really deserved to have the sort of spotlight IBS promised. And i can’t help but be kinda salty that once again, we are human focused. (and by human spotlight... i mean...that kinda involves everything GW1... it’s nice to get stuff from the source material, but mine too deep and you end up like World of Warcraft, an incoherent mess that lacks direction and literally had to take back SIX(6) expansion’s worth of steps, to be back on square 1 again, and i find it hilarious that this is why DF is praised so much as an expansion)

Once again, nothing wrong with taking from the source material, just don’t let that be your go-to every single time. GW2 is known for reinventing ideas, i just don’t want them to stop that good habit of theirs.

Go make a cringy, silly, goofy page. Do what you want. It doesn't need to be 17 directories and 9 links deep, a lot of the favorites we had in high school were 2-3 pages at most and found on Yahoo when it was still a directory, a webring, or links from other pages.

If you really want to get serious, please remember that a domain, a full ass domain is less than $20 a year and hosting which can EASILY be shared is $15 a month. I've had a cheap dreamhost plan for decades now and have put up friends websites happily. You probably know a nerd with a server who'd be happy to do the same.

Already mentioned it in another post two days ago, but it bears repeating: if you use social media primarily as a way to write out your ideas to the world, maybe making your own website on neocities could be your thing.

AND FOR MONTHS THEY LOOKED AFTER HIM. ate together. snoozed in cuddle puddles together. got fucked up on Kupo Nuts together. it was wild. they found him with a big ol explorer's backpack, and alongside a White Mage Soul Crytal (RARE AND PRICELESS ARTIFACT ALLOWING ITS OWNER TO ADEPTLY WIELD CURATIVE MAGICKS!!), they found a shitty harp inside with A NAME CARVED ON THE SIDE.........

They're fond of their weird little man, but after a few months the moogles are like, "hey if he's really good at healing magicks and we can't teach him how to read or write, maybe let's give him to the people in the Quarrymill. SUDDENLY, GOD (A SENTIENT CRYSTAL IN THE CENTER OF THE PLANET) REACHES OUT TO HIM AND IS LIKE HI. LISTEN GO OUT THERE AND SAVE THE WORLD.

E'li is like o..k... and starts his journey to become an Adventurer.....

and then gets to a place called Limsa Lominsa which SCARES THE SHIT OUT OF HIM, THEN IMMEDIATELY GOES BACK TO THE GIANT FOREST PLACE AND DOESN'T LEAVE.

GOD CRYSTAL actually told a DIFFERENT set of people to go save the world like FIVE YEARS AGO, and a bunch of stuff happened but TLDR; GOD CRYSTAL'S GROUP OF CHOSEN HEROS WHO ONCE TRIED TO SAVE THE REALM BUT WERE SPIRITED AWAY...!!!

find the strange little healing cat man one day during their adventures. their leader, Meteor (!!!!!! YES MR MAIN CHARACTER GUY HIMSELF), looks at him and this is how their meeting went:

buncha stuff happens... E'li goes to War, does PTSD: The Again, GETS ISEKAI'D and does Saving the World: 2 but THIS time his best friend he made just before the God Crystal Group disbanded shows up and is like "I'M GOING TO DIE FOR YOU!" and he's like "???? I'M LITERALLY INSANE CAN YOU PLEASE NOT MAKE IT WORSE"

buncha OTHER stuff happens...

and currently him and his Best Friend (he didn't actually die) are now life partners who just want to go on adventures and take naps together.

BY THE WAY, HE DOESN'T ACTUALLY HAVE RETROGRADE AMNESIA IN THE CONVENTIONAL SENSE. GOD CRYSTAL ACTUALLY JUST YOINKED A 1500 YEAR OLD SOUL FROM THE AETHERIAL SEA (THE AFTERLIFE BUT IT'S REAL, AND IS INSIDE THE PLANET), MADE A COPY OF METEOR'S BODY, MADE IT A CAT MAN, SHOVED THE SOUL IN IT, THEN SHUNTED IT BACK UNTO THE MORTAL COIL TO GO FIGHT FOR HER. HE LANDED HEAD FIRST ONTO A FUCKIN ROCK AND SHE WAS LIKE "OOF, MY B. ANYWAY I'LL BE IN TOUCH"
