haunted by that post that’s like “something something you’ll never believe what the creature did next” “it creeched” because “it creeched” has somehow lodged itself into my lexicon and I’ve started saying creeched far more than necessary in my daily life

(old art of Une!) So I've been thinking about knoxonk morphology and how they classify as like... A 'hell cat' and I've come to the conclusion that it's a broad term that encompasses the Feliformia as a whole both in real life, folklore and media! For instance, Rethzalan(Bor's fog leader) could be classified as a Panthera pardus(melanistic leopard) hellcat with a Dirlagraun(displacer beast) body plan. Dossi, however out of her tressym host, is a Panthera uncia gynosphinx(snow leopard she-sphinx) hell cat with beneko+rakshasa body plan(or visa versa) Une and Barbor have the undifined/chimera body plan, for Une it's the manticore body plan with chimera characteristics. kinda confusing sure, but I think if he was solely manticore he'd have a human face more readily than pangolin/bat like being with unsightly amounts of teeth. Bor's undefined and theoretically classified as a chimera. Nothing in them really screams 'cat', they're a goat/roach/leech creech with risen qualities but they're technically still under the hellish Feliformia morphology. Kinda like hyenas and bear cats are related to felines- (honestly I can see it on bor tbh) Onna isn't readily noticeable at first glance, she could be classified as any other griffon in Jabberwocky's forest (since they can be that colorful and huge). But her biggest give away is her not having a shadow and a bunch of smaller one eyed birds following her There is no hierarchy of which body plan a certain knox has, all it does is help them hone in on which preferred prey they hunt. or which type of fog seeks them out~

So I've had a couple of AU ideas since I've gotten back into the fandom and I'm kinda curious on what people think about them.

Monster AU - Snake and Shifter

In which Ran is only half human and Shinichi is only partially inhuman. Shinichi is descended from a line of shapeshifters who have mixed with humans so long the shifting is more or less danger driven, so good deaging was more his subconscious trying to protect him than the actual poison, meaning AI also has something like this going on - what if all the Blacks are shapeshifters to some degree? Meanwhile, Ran's mother was a Naga while Mouri is a human. Not much going on here but Ran probably has a stronger sense of smell than a human but weaker than a Naga and eventually, tho it may take a bit, realizes that Conan and Shinichi have similar scents. If the drug/deaging changed his scent then maybe she doesn't notice until after he manages to temporarily return as Shinichi, and his smell is similar to Conan's. She joins in on trying to help him re-age or something. They also aren't the only creeches but I dunno what the others would be.

TLDR, Shinichi and Ai have shapeshifter DNA and Ran is half Naga, she realizes Conan and Shinichi are the dang person because of scent and starts helping him.

Immortal AU - Don't trust magic

This one is both the least different and the most, in a manner of speaking. Shinichi, in an attempt to permanently reage himself, manages to succeed far longer than any previous attempts, and returns to Ran to try and salvage their relationship. Something happens and there's a backfire of sorts, not only reverting Shinichi back to Conan in front of Ran but unknowingly affecting her as well. It's not immediately obvious but, within a few years, it's noticed that doesn't really seem to be aging. Eventually, Shinichi returns to his age naturally or something, and realizes that Ran still hasn't gotten any older, when she should look at least ten years older, and soon he stops aging as well - they're stuck at the age Shinichi was trying to return to. They probably end up trying to reverse the situation, not knowing what would happen if they do, but if they fail at least they have each other. Speaking of which, I want to give them a supernatural ability thqt only works when they're holding hands or something but that might be too much.

TLDR, Shinichi tries magic or something to reage but indeed him and Ran are immortally stuck at the Shinichi's actual age and they're probably trying to find a counter spell.

Shifter AU - Cat to Kitten

Shinichi has always been able to turn into a cat, but it's something he hid from even Ran. But when he gets deaged, he becomes stuck in his cat form. Ran eventually finds him and takes care of him, naming him Conan after Shinichi's favorite author. Eventually he regains a partially human form, and Ran helps him hide the ears and tail. From here the story continues relatively the same, but with two secrets on the line. Also, beach episodes but instead of staring at Ran or something he's chasing birds and trying to avoid the water.

TLDR, Shinichi can turn into a cat and got forced into the form of a kitten, eventually the normal events of the show happen but with attempts to hide his inhuman features included.

Time AU - Physical Flashbacks

Ran is the reincarnation of a goddess or demigoddess of time, but she can't control her abilities. Mostly she gets visions, but sometimes she'll end up a few hours or so in the past in a bit of a time loop until she figures out why. This has allowed her to save Conan several times, but most of he times saving him were merely her own mortal skills. Eventually this fails. She's found out the truth, but Shinichi is dying, and she keeps trying to change things, and it's just not working. Somehow, the next time she goes back, she ends up at the beginning, after Shinichi has already been shrunk though, and has to figure out what to do in the past to prevent that death from ever happening, while also trying to decide if she should tell Conan she knows he's Shinichi.

TLDR, Ran is a reincarnation of some divinity tied to time but she can't control her abilities, she ends up in the past when Conan first showed up after Shinichi died and is now trying to prevent that death

(u don't have to reply to this if u don't wanna) just wanted to say, re: ur cat creech, i feel ur pain. college wasn't this big fun thing for me, either. i think it's overblown a LOT in media (probably because it's a business that makes a lot of money. augh.) after college, when i didn't have to worry about assignments and social anxiety and so many deadlines, and i settled into a routine with a job i was ok with, was when i started to actually feel like a real person. i hope things get better for you soon <3

That’s honestly a very refreshing thing to hear thank you Judas :( a lot of my frustration comes from the fact that it was all of my family members, ones who both have and haven’t gone to college, insisting that it would be the best time of my life, not allowing me to air my fear before i moved into my dorm or waving away anything I did express as stupid baseless fear. And then everything I was scared of came true :( and I just have to deal with it on my own and I can’t vent to anyone in my family since they‘re adamant that no matter what, this will make my life better. Cant vent to any irl friends either because I have a precious few and I don’t want them to be sick of my complaining

I can’t stop thinking and hoping that after college everything will be better, but I still feel underprepared and too immature, so I sorta feel aimless, yknow :( regardless, thank you very much, it’s nice to hear success stories that aren’t specific to my field since I feel like I’m not going to stay in this field once I leave college. what books would you recommend for an 8 years old girl? I have a little friend who is recovering from an accident

Ohhhh I'm so sorry!! I hope she's doing ok!

I LOVE rec'ing books to kids, but keep in mind I largely read fantasy and that tends to translate to my recs as well lol. (If this reader is into horse books, that's a whole other thing and I'll have to dig out my lists....)

General recommendations I've seen for kid lit is to find stories with protagonists a couple of years older than the reader, since kids (understandably) like to "read up".

My first rec is an eternal one, but with a couple of caveats:

The Underland Chronicles (five books) by Suzanne Collins. Technically the main character Gregor is 11 in the first book (and 13 by the end) but myself and my bestie agree he should have been aged up because he doesn't quite read like an 11-year-old; even a mature one.

The series also does get kind of dark and deals with war, trauma, and grief (it deals very well with all of them but there is loss in abundance). I think the payoff at the end is well-deserved, but it is hard-earned, and some kids aren't down for that.

If the reader in question is ok with a slightly thicker and slower book, I am legally obligated to rec The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I first read this book when I was eight or nine and it got me through the first major upheaval in my young life. I adore crabby, prickly, awkward, earnest Mistress Mary Lennox.

(There's a lot of classic fiction I could rec but it really depends on the reader, since reading styles have changed so much.)

Some authors I love and trust are Patricia C. Wrede, Gail Carson Levine, Shannon Hale, Kate diCamillo, Diana Wynne Jones, Lloyd Alexander, and Jessica Day George. You have to pick and choose because they all write for a range of audiences, but their writing is solid across the board. Roald Dahl is solidly in the right age range, but I know people are hit-or-miss with him.

The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place by Maryrose Wood follows a slightly older protagonist in newly-minted governess Penelope Lumley, but it is definitely a MG story in theme, style, and in the other important members of the cast: the trio of feral children Penelope has been hired to civilize (and domesticate). Top of my list for "series to read to the niblings when they're old enough for sleepovers".

I recently read Quintessence by Jess Redman and was very impressed both with the story and the author. It's a contemporary story with a twist of magic to it. I'm keen to check out more of Redman's books in the future. I would say the same about Kelly Barnhill. I've only read The Girl Who Drank the Moon but I've heard good things about the rest of Barnhill's list.

A good while ago I started the Guardians of Childhood series by William Joyce ("The Rise of the Guardians" movie is very loosely based off of this series) and loved it. Unfortunately I never finished it.... Ain't that the way.

If your reader is ok with lots of drama and some frankly intense killing on occasion (detailed neck-snapping iirc), I had a few students who love the Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland. I...couldn't do it myself, but they swear it's a good series. (For some reason every time I see this series I think of the Warrior Cats.... Those were the days.)

One of my writing friends, Remi, is a lifelong fan of Bloomability by Sharon Creech. I found the audio version on Hoopla and absolutely adored it, and I understand Creech has plenty of other fantastic books in the same range and style. Remi also loves The Mysterious Benedict Society (I couldn't get into it but I see the appeal).

For more overtly Christian fiction, Narnia is obvious, but The Green Ember (S.D. Smith) and The Wingfeather Saga (Andrew Peterson) are a couple of more recent and very solid series. (I believe both are also available as audio on Hoopla.)

If we're looking for some graphic novels, I tried out the first book in the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi and it was pretty solid. I haven't had a chance to try the rest of the series, but liked what I did see. There's also The Nameless City by Faith Erin Hicks. (Unfortunately I haven't explored a lot of middle grade graphic novels so I don't have a lot that I'm comfortable recommending.)

I want to say both The Spiderwick Chronicles and A Series of Unfortunate Events are in the right age range, or possibly just above it, but I can't remember and it's been way too long since I read (and enjoyed!) either of these series. Kind of on the same lines would be the Artemis Fowl series, which I personally hated if I'm honest, but others tell me it's solid.

I know I'm missing some obvious recommendations, but this is what I found after browsing a few shelves on StoryGraph. There are also several books/series friends here on tumblr have recommended that I have been meaning to get to. Hopefully soon.... Some of those are:

Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo (technically "The Children of the Red King" according to StoryGraph)

The Skyborn series by Jessica Khoury

Small Spaces by Katherine Arden (I've only read her YA/Adult fantasy and I love it but it's...definitely adult so I'm curious what her MG fiction is like)

Classic authors George MacDonald, E. Nesbit, and Maud Hart Lovelace

good god this much concentrated cuteness should be considered lethal. he's fairly certain his heart is about to give out, with how it pitter - patters in his chest.

he indicates one that is light tan, with long whispy fur and a mask of brown on her face. the kitten seems drawn to pepp, coming to perch on his lap when he scritches the fabric of his pants.

" she will stay in my apartment, but ... may she stay here sometimes, so she is not lonely during my work day? "

what he was REALLY asking was how she felt about them both keeping a cat, about it being theirs. but it felt a little odd to ask outright, especially to a wild and untamable spirit like creech was. but they'd both had a hand in raising the litter, so it felt only right the cat would remain in their care, together.

Thus, Hunter has an anthro verse which would slot pretty easily into Dandelions! Munkustrap, Rum Tum Tugger and Mistoffelees would also be pretty easy to make into anthro verses too now that I think about it! Cat v cat <3 Senpai in particular also has an easy 'in' to Dandie's mainverse by sheer virtue of being a Literal video game character, so her finding a funky game & it being Senpai's is very straightforward which could lead to an interesting dynamic, especially considering Senpai being part code part Mentally Ill Guy meaning he's just not the healthiest innately but could also lead to some interesting growth as they learn to deal with eachother since. well. unless Dandie pawned Senpai's game off to somebody else or overcame what guilt there'd probably be of permanently shutting his game off, they're stuck with eachother BKHGTBR

ofc, there's also my UT/DR muses! Chara, Asgore, Toriel, Kris, Ralsei, Jevil and Noelle all leap first to mind, with Toriel in particular radiating the potential to have an interesting impact in her life if given the chance. I do have higher muse for DR muses at the moment, but I also think there could be an interesting dynamic with Ralsei and Dandie, being so similar and yet so different in the same breath, and the same kinda goes with Noelle! Especially since by default, I tend to play her after the events of a half completed ( and in one verse, fully completed ) snowgrave run which offers an interesting aspect given her being a young girl trying to find herself through a time of hardship and anxiety and very fresh trauma, and Jevil mostly because I think it could be fun <3 plus, Dandie I've noticed sometimes gravitates to folk of their chaotic nature :]

And of course, FNaF verse has a very wide array! Monty, Spring Bonnie, Mangle, Marionette, Toy Bonnie, OG Chica, OG Freddy, Plushtrap, Vanny, I've a cavalcade of options to throw at her, should any gel in particular!

I do think putting her in a box with Kris, Frisk or Jevil perhaps might be interesting, seeing the WIP state of a UT/DR verse in their carrd! Andy the Apple might also be neat sheerly due to the odd corrupted 'existing despite not being supposed to' situation he's in mirroring a cryptid status. Potentially Modeus, Karin or Anatoly could also be interesting; Modeus because of their aspect as a demon, and Karin + Anatoly as being VERY tied to the forest & folklore by sheer virtue of their story ( essentially being about a group of people fleeing from a country take refuge in a cabin and slowly starving as a storm prevents them from leaving, with the owner of the cabin having ties to the baba yaga ). there's some options!!!

Dustfinger specifically stands out because in his case, he's a book character who was read out into modern reality and is struggling to cope with it in a world lacking the magic and fantasy of the world he came from, which could be VERY interesting and mesh very well imo with Noel!! I also think there could be something neat with Chica, Freddy, and Marionette with her, given how they're some of the oldest animatronics. Perhaps finding them out in the street after being scrapped between FNaF 2 and 3?

something with LN's Hunter or the Lady, or even Evren from Sacritice could also be neat, just based on vibes! Actually, Klaasje and Noel in particular would also be very fun, less because of the witchy aspect and more because just like. fucken girlbosses, i feel like Noel would like Klaasje's attitude or at the very least Klaasje would like Noel's BHKGBTR though, honestly Skullkid, Artemis, Ares, Hypnos, Zagreus, WD Gaster, the Doll, etc etc could all work n be very inchresting!!! Ranging from Skullkid following the same concept of a child lost in a forest becoming a creature to straight-up accidentally invoking Zagreus from the Underworld be it by invoking his name or via magic, they could all function vv well!! its verrry flexible!!

I know I kinda just rambled alot here, namely bc im tired irl rn, but if y'want to expand on shit, just DM me and I'll give you a brief summary of the gist of all the characters I listed + roughly what I think could work plotting wise when i can, so yeah!!! hope this helps with getting the ball rolling <333

The secret keeper was laying on a tree branch up in the air, without a care in the world. She has been chilling there for a while. For the past few days, she hasn't been moving much. She was wrapped up in her shawl, bundled up like a cat. Oh, these were the days she loved being a secret keeper. Having this... gift to change her body to whatever she wanted. Even if she was the worst with it compared to her siblings.

..Wait, what day was it?.. There were fireworks a few days ago, right?

...

Oh new years. Thats right. She never gotten her head around the holiday. Why celebrate a number growing larger?.. it was earths birthday. That what she thought. Its now 2025 years old. There were a sign near creech's dumpster too, but she was busy that day. Now she wondered what would have happned if she went.

You know it was weird to the secret keeper. She was away from her home. Ripped away from her timeline, probably forgotten, but.. here she.. oddly felt the same feeling she had at her timeline. The same cozy, warm, feeling like going to grandmas house. She was doing things she never thought she would. Talking to others, being close to people again, trusting people, feeling cared for and loved...

She.. didn't deserve this, but.. she was happy with what she got... Maybe her new years revolution will be her being more open, being more herself, letting more people in, let them know how thankful she is, rediscover herself.
