the thing with Castrovalva, aside from the whole i built a whole city/planet for my best friend (cough cough crush cough cough) to recover from regeneration. Which I totally did cause and do not feel bad about at all.
Is that when Adric is trapped in that web, Ainley cannot bear Adric being in a higher position then him.

hello!! sorry, i just finished watching new who and i am DYING for more thoschei content. i know classic who has more obviously but i heard there are like also books and audio dramas and comics and infinite other stuff (?) and i was wondering if you could recommend like a list of things to stream in order to get to know more of these two idiots (affectionate) as i am a bit lost in between all the content. or if you could point out a source where i can look that up for myself, it would be great as well! thank you so much in advance <3 and sorry if this seems silly i am v new to the fandom rip
hey anon!! no need to apologize, i'm honored this ask ended up in my inbox! :) and it's not silly at all, there's a LOT of stuff out there. which is wonderful! but can def be a bit bewildering, too.
i'd definitely recommend classic who as a place to start! don't feel like you need to go in headfirst w/ s1e1 tho. just jump in wherever interests you! if you'd like a slightly more curated d/m list:
terror of the autons/the mind of evil/the claws of axos: okay, so it was almost impossible for me not to just rec âall the three & delgado eps,â so have the first three & feel free to continue on if you find yourself loving them (you will)
the keeper of traken/logopolis/castrovalva: a proper lil trilogy of stories that gives us four -> five & beevers -> ainley
survival: the final dw ep! seven & ainley đŒ
for some not-really-classic but still on-screen essentials:
the tv movie: aka âthe enemy within.â eight & roberts đ
scream of the shalka: an animated webcast that at one point rly was the canonical ninth doctor. shalka!doctor (r. e. grant) & shalka!master (jacobi. yes, again. or previously, rather.)
the curse of fatal death: a comic relief sketch written by moffat which features a het version of d/m getting together romantically (now why does that sound familiar?)
for audios, here's a couple that are both standalone & very d/m-focused:
master: seven & beevers. a great audio ft. an origin story that is probably one of the most talked abt things on tumblr, so def check this one out!!
the last line: ten & jacobi. when you're on trial, who do you call for help? your best enemy, of course
blood of the time lords: four & dreyfus. a must-include for me personally bc it has one of my fave d/m concepts ever :)
for books, once you're in the deep end all the novelizations of the classic d/m eps can have great tidbits. some original story recs:
the dark path: two & âkoschei.â another origin story that gave us that name for a pre-master master, written by our d/m comrade-in-arms david mcintee
harvest of time: three & delgado working together & confronting the past w/ a lovely dose of master angst
the infinity doctors: infinity & the magistrate <3. don't let these names or its timeline placement intimidate you, just go into it with the idea that this is an au (ish) where the doctor & the master both returned to gallifrey & you'll enjoy yourself!
and finally some comics:
flashback: another origin story which i've uploaded here :)
the eleventh doctor year two: the eleventh doctor confronts the time war ft. my fave lil guy the war child master!
doctor who: missy: aka âthe master plan.â missy breaks delgado out of stormcage while pretending to be a version of the doctor he hasn't met yet
hopefully these will get you started! for even more, the main resource i use when looking for d/m stuff is the theory timelines for the master & the master's incarnations on the wiki! i just poke around & click links until i find something that sounds interesting! enjoy!!! :)
#doctor x master#dw#for tv: fmoviez.to / for audios: audiobookbay.is / for books: annas-archive.org / for comics: readcomiconline.li#or various drive folders you may find floating around

wild blue yonder
the tardis can regenerate itself...... !!! I mean, wait we knew that already kjhkjh but I just connected the dots now that... that means The Time Lords mined and mauled the child just to make their cars better, as well. Damn...
in classic who u used to have to use ur imagination to pretend everything wasnât a wobbly set... now u have to use ur imagination to pretend everything isnât a greenscreen :/
"is that who i am now?" the shocking thing isnât that he is gay (thatâs what donna interprets) the shock to himself is voicing how horny he is lol
Someone is gonna say gravity and that's gonna be fucking weird
"it would take trillion years to get that farâ chills!
"no one is ever been this far. till us. and this ship" colonialism fiction dna shining thru
âyou little streakâ <3
"she'll move on" "not shaun, he'll go to that alleyway every year..." \ten at the alleyway to see rose parallel....
Ghost aroma!!!
blue and orange motif....âŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ 13 aesthetic moments.... [13 and Swarm coded? / aka entropy/life coded?/donna and the doc...]
âmaybe there's a tribe and they worship it⊠(âŠ) time passes and the city falls... and there's the tardis" beautiful!! I'm could do somth w/ re: w/ the doctor and their companions. (eyes emoji)
"it got complicated" UNDERSTATEMENT OF A CENTURY #2
"The notion of shape is strange." "it limits" literally current architecture theory
This is so nofna solar system-core
love a classic âanti matter hates matterâ story
[the no-bodies....cousins to the the could have been king ... with his army of never wheres]
This feels very [doctor trying to figure out their body in each regeneration] [intentionally?] this is so end of evangelion poster-core
"itâs strange enough my face coming back, but not this big" / [metaphor for reboots?]
This episode is like the clamoring for us to get a castrovalva 2 escher-like world again next season
"that's not gonna work either" i love these idiots
"why does it have to be one last trip?" rtd ringing moffat / gatiss / gardner / etc and being like like -
ok but follow this reasoning: if the doctor is the same person bc they keep their memories (as the show makes a point of.... constantly) ... and if the memories make the person ... then indeed an entity that copies the memories is the same person, is it not? Where do we draw the line between whoâs ârealâ and who isnât, in this scenario?
A CREATION I DEVASTATED / literally watched WoM two seconds before this w/ ten all "everything i do just makes it happen" sdjsdkf this is what i mean when i say the doctor has never Processed anythingggg since that Bottom Pit moment
"it wasn't your fault" "i know! (but it stil sucks!!!)" me at therapy like
"WHY DOES HE NEED YOU?" me, Pavlovian tone: because he is lonely...
âwhen something is gone, it keeps existingâ â highlight this!!!! this is gonna be the new thesis statement about Grief!!! this is gonna be The Point for the next 4 years lol
It's very fun to watch this after marath6ning all of ten's era bc it's like... that boy never processed any of that shit. did 11 process shit? did 12? 12 maybe a little but really i think they just got even more trauma (bill ): ) dkdksks and don't get me started on 13. basically what im saying is the doctor Never did get a break on between waters of mars up until now... [and i guess to go further never did get a break after since like....... freaking ghost light skskskskkjkj seven is still There. we don't think about that enough.]
Donna being a clone fucker is not a headcanon ever thought i had but im glad its been confirmed now "donma doesn't think she"s stupid" im sure rtd has launched this exact same rant on so some unwilling family members while browsing ao3 "stop copying and make up your own minds" social commentary / commentary on reboots again / core "individualism > society" dr. who 101 messaging
The not things are kinda.... cute? skdksk if they weren't murderous they look like ppl to hang out w/ and play videogames......
"what do you want?" "you tell us" fundamental doctor-companion dialogue....
"love letters don't travel very far" put a pin on that...
ok.... ARGHGHGHH LET ME THINK THINK THINK skskks me failing at CBT be like
What if the doctor is from our universe. what then the doctor being like we have to mill ourselves immediately feels very 13
this is like "what if turn left and midnight but they go through it together this time <3" fic "where the walls are thin and anything is possible" eyes emoji
"that copy was 99% donna" so maybe re:earlier... what the show is saying between copy vs real is that it's all about the x factor, the 1%....
CONCLUSIONS! lived up to the hype! i think it's a bit 13-era vibe in that it's clearly influenced by all the prestige space-base-isolation scifi we see in the ~cinema now every year. the aesthetic is hitting that vibe (and going to the root, there's also a very clear Alien influence). kinda wish we had more one offs just like this one :( bc i feel the other 2 specials have too much Work to do, so there's not enough time to do.Fun like lore and character stuff. Execution wise is very successful. the switcheroos work. the callbacks work. there's a lot of character stuff happening ("I just realized I'm still working through that!") but it doesn't interfere w/ the adventure itself. My one grip is there's a couple shots that do feel too green-screen-y, but overall the ep is visually amazing. def only a story you could do now. also I love that the NMDs were like "rtd is gonna retcon the timeless child!!! everyone hated it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and he was like "cool. now watch this" lollll king moments. rare moments where it feels like we live in the best timeline.
#i think there's More stuff to analyze in this one but i need some time to Digest It#and some rewatches#dw spoilers#wild blue yonder#dw

@chrumblr-whumblr Day Fourteen: Traumatic Touch Aversion
Fandom: Doctor Who (Fifth Doctor era). I rewatched Castrovalva and UGHUGHGH them <3 Set directly after Castrovalva
Words: 650ish
___
âRight then!â the Doctor said, slamming a lever down on the TARDIS consol. He spun around, facing his three young companions with a smile and clasped his hands together. âThe planet of Florana--I rather think we all deserve a break, donât you?âÂ
The Doctor himself felt as fit as a fiddle--more, in fact. He was humming with new energy and he was excited to try out this new body, learn what he could do. He felt new and fresh, new body brimming with energy, new mind active and quick.Â
But he knew that while his regeneration process had allowed him a few chances to rest, his three young friends hadnât had the easiest of times over the past day or so. Adric especially looked positively exhausted, leaning against the wall of the console room, head lowered. A few days relaxing on the gorgeous beaches of Florana would do them all some good.Â
He pulled the level to open the door and ushered his companions outside. Good--heâd landed correctly, for once. Heâd been a little worried heâd miss the mark again. Immediately he felt himself relax, the last of the strain of regeneration fading. Adric perked up, a small glow already appearing on his pale cheeks. Nyssa gasped, clasping her hands together and staring out at the beautiful landscape before them.Â
Flowers spread across the land before them, every colour imaginable bathing the world in a beautiful light. Their scent was subtle but unmistakable, soft perfume of flowers flowing over them. Not far away the meadow faded slowly into a beautiful sandy beach, the sun sparkling off the water.Â
Only Tegan seemed unimpressed. She crossed her arms in the doorway of the TARDIS.Â
âDoctor,â she said accusingly. âThis isnât Heathrow.âÂ
âOh, come on Tegan!â the Doctor called. He shoved his hands in his pockets and strode outside. Nyssa and Adric were already rapidly making their way towards the beach. âItâs a time machine, Iâll get you back on time.âÂ
Tegan gave a long suffering sigh, but she followed him out, stepping through the meadow.Â
A few deep breaths of Floranian air settled the Doctor more than he realised he needed settling. This regeneration had been strange, unsettled. He wasnât entirely sure if everything had gone right and the thought worried him more than he wanted to admit.Â
But the clear, fresh air of the planet settled the last of his fears and he allowed himself to relax as he made his way towards the beach.Â
âDoctor!â Nyssa cried, running up the beach towards him. âOh you must come and see.âÂ
Before he could fully process, she had grabbed his arm.Â
He started, the abrupt touch sending a stab of wrongness and panic through him. He pulled away rapidly, jerking back and tugging his arm out of Nyssaâs grasp.Â
His arm felt prickly and not quite right, uncomfortable. Nyssaâs excited expression was rapidly replaced by one of concern.Â
âDoctor?â she asked.Â
He forced a smile, tucking his hands back in his pockets. His arm still felt strange--not painful, not entirely uncomfortable. JustâŠunpleasant. Wrong. It wasnât something heâd ever experienced before.Â
Maybe something had gone wrong with the regeneration.Â
âWhat is it?â he asked, forcing a casual interest. Nyssa studied him for a long moment, clearly picking up that something wasnât quite right, but she didnât push him on it.Â
âAdricâs found some kind of strange creature,â Nyssa explained. âYou alright?â Maybe she was going to push him on it.Â
He nodded, the sensation in his arm all but gone now. It was probably nothing.Â
âOh, Iâm sure itâs nothing. Just leftover regeneration side effects.â He grinned, and Nyssa smiled weakly back. âWhat kind of creature?âÂ
Nyssa gestured him forward and started jogging lightly down the beach. She didnât reach for his arm again.Â
The Doctor hurried after her, hoping this wasnât going to be a permanent side effect.Â
___ Me looking at the fact that Peter Davison never really hugged his companions to avoid Implications: Oh we can make angst out of this.
Basically I love the idea that the Weird Regeneration caused some ongoing Issues for Five, that he had throughout that whole life. Maybe super sensitive to touch, maybe chronic pain, maybe something else. Not sure what exactly, i just love that concept because Five absolutely needs MORE pain in his life :D
#wren writes#chrumblr whumblr challenge#traumatic touch aversion#classic doctor who#fifth doctor#OGGHUGHU i love these four#i forgot to what extent until i rewatched episodes aaah#oneday i NEED to write the post earthshock adric focused story iv'e had lingering in the back of my mind for ages hehe#YES post earthshock adric. Doctor Who: Castrovalva
Season Nineteen âš 1982 âš
Doctor: 5th
Story Length: 4 Episodes
Companions: Adric, Nyssa, Tegan
Main Setting: The Tardis, Castrovalva and Event One
Main Enemy: The Tremas Master
Creatures: Time Lords
My Personal Rating: 7/10
The Doctor's latest regeneration has proven more unstable than his previous ones. His two companions, Tegan and Nyssa, help him recuperate on the tranquil planet of Castrovalva.
Adric has been captured by the Master, who is taking advantage of the Doctor's weakened state to ensnare him in an elaborate trap whose recursive nature threatens to destroy his mind.
As the Doctor begins to recover he realises that the Master's trap for Adric is even more intricate than he could have imagined and that he will stop at nothing to gain his revenge over the Doctor. Source.
Sorry but the Doctor regenerates and automatically thinks of Jamie.. I'm starting to think that's a kink of mine yaknow..
Aww the Doctor mentions Vicki<3
And he picks up two's flute... Sorry I'm stuck in the world of the second Doctor.
Such a goofy story, with a goofy man. I love it. Really excited for the Fifth Doctor. I liked the story, it was fun, I like to when regeneration goes a bit wonky.
(Please don't take these too seriously, I am not a real life reviewer, just someone who likes the show)

Re prompts! Iâm pretty sure Nyssa is to me what Tegan is to you- ie favourite companion, beloved character, light of my life etc. Any moment with Nyssa in the aftermath of Logopolis- her entire world taken away from her- would be greatly loved by me <3
I shan't lie, I struggle to ever remember having thought of Nyssa as a lone character, outside of the units she's part of. So this was a bit tricky (and required much reference to her wiki page, a bit of fudging, and looping of the song Good King Wenceslas.) I hope it doesn't do her, or you, a disservice.
December 2nd - Nyssa.
She couldnât sleep, the tranquillity she had come to expect of a Traken night interrupted by the breathing of the new traveller they had picked up, almost as strident in sleep as she had been awake, and that slight presence at the back of her mind - the TARDIS itself, she thought - happy and sad and a rainbow of emotions that she couldnât find the names for but that came into being like small bubbles of feeling that tickled and burst in the back of her mind as the TARDIS reacted to whatever was being related to it, perhaps by the Doctor, perhaps by the outside world. Whichever it was, it was not Traken. Could never be Traken again.
She drew her borrowed nightgown around herself and padded to the door. If she couldnât escape the noise in her own mind, she could at least leave behind the sighing and grumblings of a sleep she could not achieve mocking her. The corridors were cool and bright, clean lines that both reassured and made her ache for home. Castrovalva had had some of the same lines, perfection through cold mathematics, before it had begun to fall apart. Logopolis too, had shared that order before the Time Lords had intervened. Before this- before the Doctor had stolen a new face for himself. And she had watched, watched with the fascination of a scientist introduced to new data in a once predictable experiment, and knew it was not by the same method the Master had⊠chosen his new face, but she was wary of him in the same manner. There was nothing in these new eyes that echoed anyone she had known, but she had been frightened for a moment at the bottom of that tower that in those oversized clothing it would be her father again, her father with his same kind voice, saying such unkind and dreadful things.Â
Her feet had carried her past the living areas, past the door Adric had disappeared through self-importantly, past the kitchen they had all felt too awkward to take advantage of, as though the domestic necessity of making a meal was to diminish the catastrophic events of the day, to forget about the worlds that would never make their meals again. She, selfishly, she now admonished herself, had not been capable of assuaging their guilt in the matter, had been numb to the social conventions that had been instilled in her as the daughter of a consul.Â
She missed her teddy bears suddenly. Grief for the whole of Traken was too overwhelming to consider, the incomprehensible state of no longer being a daughter of her father, of no longer have a place to call her home were all too large to be thought of logically yet, needed more space, more peace than she was capable of gaining here to think about. But her teddy bears, tucked tidily away on her bed when she had completed her ablutions- yesterday morning? A lifetime ago? were no longer there. How could she sleep if she no longer had Big Bear to guard her safety? It had been silly, a childâs superstition she had been too old for already but had continued as tradition, but it was suddenly the most important thing that there should be something of her home to guard her. But all she had carried with her was her clothing, a comb and a bag.Â
A small bubble of grief rose in the back of her mind, and she didnât know if it was herself or the TARDIS she was feeling. Or even perhaps, in a flight of unreality, the TARDIS was grieving for her, with her. Such a trivial thing, she knew, but still she mourned such childish superstitions she could never truly feel again, for all that the teddy bears had guarded was now lost, herself most of all. Another twinge redirected her feet, and now she knowingly allowed the TARDIS this, too tired, too numb of all but trivial sorrows to resist or fear the push of a stronger mind on her own. Doors blurred together in the corners of her eyes, and she failed to muster an interest in what could do that, whether speed had possessed her, whether the TARDIS was doing it. Or whether it was simply the tears she could not seem to let fall. But one door stopped, and her in front of it, the pressure on her mind now gone. Her hand, weighing as much as each planet that had been destroyed, lay on the handle, pushed it down of its own accord.Â
In neat rows upon a table lay beakers, neatly coiled tubing, stacks of bound books that she knew suddenly would open to crisp new pages. A laboratory, as tidy as if it had never before been touched. Equipment lay in the shadows beyond the pool of light from the open door, both that which she recognised from her studies, and ones she would have to learn the purposes of. A mix of things from home, and the future she had yet to learn of. She had brought more than her clothing and a comb to this new world, and while it would take time for the numbness to truly lift, her mind with all its carefully taught lessons, from dancing to politics to science would wake again. She did not know if dancing or politics would feature in this future she was tentatively beginning to believe in, but science would always have its place. Entropy may be a certainty of the universe, but so was progression, and Nyssa knew which she would prefer to aid.Â
But tonight was not the night, nor a nightgown safe clothing for a laboratory. She retreated, closed the door momentarily on the offering, and allowed her feet to carry her back to bed. The TARDIS would guard her till morning, she hoped, and then, perhaps, the future could begin.Â
#it is once again almost midnight. and today i have sat through a TWO AND A HALF HOUR PANTOMIME OF PETER PAN and that is not conducive to wri#ting. merely to weeping and wishing to put peter pan out of his misery. /two and a half hours/. anyway#fic#advent fic#nyssa of traken#i did also have a quote floating around in my head but couldn't shoehorn it in unfortunately.#alack the heavy day/ that I have worn so many winters out/ and know not now what name to call myself. Greetings,
*kicks down your door, pounces at you*
I am attacking you with asks! đ (hope you don't mind)
1, 3, 4, 11, 14
And 7 if youâre feeling braveâŠ
Also, do you have any DW novels /audios you like and consider essential listening?
Have a good day/week
(love your art btw)
Farewell...
*disappears into the night*
GASP, my door!!! Well it's worth it. Thank you so much for the asks! And aaa ty for the compliment to my art too đïżœïżœ rlly appreciate it! *gives you a little origami star before you mysteriously disappear*
1. Who is your favourite Doctor?
Currently 12 is my favourite, but since I'm watching classic, 3 and 5 are big favs too. My answer on this question changes so much though I seem to cycle through them đ€Ł
3. Who is your favourite male companion?
Turlough so far!! He's really interesting and unique. Love this lil pathetic guy. Kisses his forehead.
4. Whats your favourite story?
UHHH so, so many. I'd probably give you different answers depending on where the wind blows. But I'll try. Can't pick one so here's a few! (if anyone else asks again I shall give different ones)
-Enlightenment, from the 5th Doctor. Absolutely adored this one!!
-I'll forever love Castrovalva, also from the 5th Doctor. It's probably not that good but I do love me some confusing places...
-Midnight from the 10th Doctor
-Wild Blue Yonder from the new specials :') YELLS
-Heaven Senth from 12 my beloved
-As an artist, well, Vincent and the Doctor, from the 11th Doctor. I just. Cries
11. Show a picture of your favourite Doctor outfit
Does this count
Otherwise
14. Show a picture of your favourite Tardis design
7. Rank the Doctors from best to worst
OK IM FEELING BRAVE I'll try... but I'm only ranking those I've watched. Not taking into acct the EU. Also not including 15 bcs it's too early for me to decide (but I love him so far!!)- I'm ranking them based off how interesting they are to me also.
1. Capaldi's Doctor (12)
2. Eccleston's Doctor (9)
3. McCoy's Doctor (7). Very interesting guy
4. Pertwee's Doctor (3)
5. Tennant's Doctor (10)
6. Whittaker's Doctor (13)
7. Davison's Doctor (5)
8. Smith's Doctor (11) - I do love him but I lost interest in him for unknown reasons
9. Colin Baker's Doctor (6) - I actually found him interesting when watching! But yeah since I'm not taking EU into acct, not the best for me
10. Tennant's Revamp Doctor (14) - Well, we've got three specials. I liked him, but idk I don't think I'd be excited to watch an entire season of 14. He's more like a cameo for me.
Ok this was hard af ejdkdld as usual my answer will probably change anyday. I don't think any of them is bad though, I love all of the Doctors so far! Hence why it's hard to pick favs without rambling about other Doctors djdkd
Extra: Novels and audios
I haven't read any novels (yet) but I've listened to a few audios! Not many, I'm slowly getting into it. HOWEVER
If you're into thoschei you definitely need to listen to Master. It's just. GAHH. It consumed my braincells. It will never leave me. Plus it made me want to listen to more from Beevers and McCoy. I consider it essential if you're deep into thoschei tbh
AND. The Natural History of Fear. I went blind into this audio, from the 8th Doctor... It's one of my favourite stories ever, which I didn't add up there to not repeat myself. It changed my brain chemistry. It made me wonder how tf is it humanly possible to come up with all that and write it so well. The acting is sublime, the story is undescribable. Anytime I try to explain what it is about I fail tremendously. I don't think I consider it essential but I really do recommend it! In fact I recommend to listen to it twice at least.
Again tysm for the ask this was fun!!!

sad so few people discuss the sets and costumes of classic who i think too often its dismissed because its like oh well it was cheap and silly no i am attacking you with laser beams get out anyways i love the distinctive clothing they give for various alien planets and how it can look harmonious but quite varied and natural in a way a lot of sci fi shows kinda struggle with like the costumes in snakedance were fantastic using these interesting like bright and shiny strips of fabric as belts and accessories as like a unifying design principal for the planets fashion sense but they were worn in sooo many different ways and it felt like a lot of thought went into the various styles of clothing the locals of the planet wore it felt like each costume was fairly different but again there was this thread of a unifying style.. when too often sci fi clothing feels like ok everyone wears the same thing on the same planet or like god i was so obsessed with the like plastic and gauze hats in castrovalva tho keeper of traken logopolis and castrovalva definitely an exploration of planets where everyone wears the same thing but damn did the one thing they wore fuck so hard tho of course the same outfits were for various thematic purposes of each episode ;3 anyways also i do love the sets i think the beautiful decorative science fantasy medieval type aesthetic cultivate in those various years was very fun and they really made so many different planets stand out like the art nouveau touches on traken soo fun tbh their entire like shakesperean fairy princess costumes and the hairstyles impeccable impeccable god i love sci fi costume design so much it makes me insane actually

DOCTOR WHO TOP 10 - 5th Doctor
And now for the fifth Doctor...
Oh, dammit! It's 2024 already... Can we just pretend that I managed to do all of these in 2023, like I originally intended?
10. The Tides of Time
A big epic at the start of the fifth Doctor's DWM run, Tides goes to some weird places and I really like it for that.
9. Omega
While I think it's safe to call it the weakest of the 40th anniversary villains trilogy, I still think it's bloody good and Nev Fountain isn't appreciated enough.
8. The Curse of the Scarab
As a nerd who's into film history, I really think Doctor Who should be doing stuff like this more often. I really love this one. It's the start of the Ground Zero Threshold arc. It's also probably my fave out of that arc.
7. Enlightenment
Doctor Who trilogy finales... aren't necessarily bad but they usually aren't the best. The Last of the Time Lords, Hell Bent, Castrovalva, The Giggle... I don't think any of these stories are bad and they all have their fans. I personally like most of the stories I just mentioned. But I'd wager finding Doctor Who fans that love them over both of the preceding parts of their respective trilogies would not be an easy task.
That's not the case with this one. Enlightenment is rich, lovely, vivid, well-written, and just overall really great. It's a crime that Barbara Clegg never wrote another Doctor Who story...
6. The Caves of Androzani
I think everyone knows that Caves is amazing. It's only at number six because I feel there are two TV stories with Five that manage to do something more interesting... And also there's some eu stuff that I need to shout out like the pretentious eu fan that I am...
5. The Elite
Sike! You thought there weren't other Barbara Clegg Doctor Who stories? Ha! Alright, it's not actually a Big Finish story by Barbara Clegg. It's written by John Dorney but adapted from an unmade TV script written by Clegg. Trust me - this one is a masterpiece.
4. The Moderator
After Dave Gibbons had left DWM, the comic strip was stuck in a rut imo. The stories just sort of waddle around... But not this one. No, the last fifth Doctor comics to be released during his era is an absolute blast. An outpouring of neat ideas, masterfully illustrated by Steve Dillon. I would be lying if I said that it's the most well-plotted thing ever... But I love this one to bits anyway.
3. Kinda
Gonna hand over the next two entries to people who are slightly more qualified...
"Kinda above all things. You give actual drama to actors and you see what they can do with Doctor Who. It's head and shoulders over most of the things around it. In the 1980s, fanzine writers spent a lot of time trying to decode it. But the whole point of drama is to get your mind working and to get you involved in the mystery and to do a bit of work. Kinda is functioning on the level of a Play for Today, which is so completely different to where Doctor Who was at the time."
-Paul Cornell, DWM 542, p. 31 (New Who writers on their favourite 1980s Doctor Who scripts)
2. Snakedance
"Snakedance manages to be even cleverer than Bailey's Kinda the year before. I was 12 years old when it was broadcast, and the brilliant ways it plays upon the 20th anniversary's nostalgia, upon the way the Doctor is perceived - and the shocks, and the wit - had a profound effect on me. I remember watching it over and over on my parents' new VCR machine, and deciding I wanted to be a writer."
-Robert Shearman, DWM 542, p. 31 (New Who writers on their favourite 1980s Doctor Who scripts)
1. Circular Time
Admittedly, I'm cheating a bit with this one. It's four stories in a trench coat. But they all deserve the top spot and I'll explain why.
Confession: I used to really dislike the fifth Doctor. While Peter Davison is brilliant, I always thought his Doctor was a bit... flavour-less? Beige? Not that interesting? Most of this top 10 is formed by eu stories, so you can already see that I'm also not a big fan of this era as a whole. Even the really popular ones like The Five Doctors or Earthshock don't do much for me. So yeah, I was a fifth Doctor hater.
Then I fell in love with the fifth Doctor because of Circular Time. Well, specifically because of 'Autumn', which made me reconsider basically everything about the fifth Doctor. But I don't think 'Autumn' would work as well if it wasn't a part the larger patchwork. 'Spring' gives us a peak at the rules of regeneration and Time Lord politics that feels unique and intriguing 17 years later. 'Summer' is a historical romp that deals with the inherent anachronicity of the Doctor. And 'Winter' reframes this incarnation's final destination in a way that's cold and dark, yet sweet and hopeful. Together, these stories radically shifted my perspective on the fifth Doctor. You owe it to yourself to give them a listen.
