Mina seldom had a chance to leave schoolroom. There was an irony in that. She had wished for years to finally be grown and permitted to leave freely, even with a chaperone if she must, only to find that she scarcely had the time or energy to do so.

Indeed, the only reason she had slipped out that afternoon was because a maid had already done the daily shopping in the city, and Mina hadn’t caught her in time to request paper. Rather than impose, this felt as good an opportunity as any to get some fresh air.

Having just accomplished said task, she was maneuvering the package to fit in her writing case as she weaved through the crowd. Unfortunately, her diminished attention was her downfall - she collided with some poor boy walking past her.

❝Oh!❞

Her writing case and package fell to the ground.

❝My apologies- I really should have watched where I was going…❞

She stooped to collect her things, her brows knit with worry.

Mina looked over at Smike, smiling softly. She had a great deal of empathy for the young man’s nervous nature, and was willing to go out of her way to assure him there was no need for alarm. It was the sense of balance and gentle patience akin to walking past a hare without giving it cause to flee.

❝Not at all,❞ she declared. She was sitting on a park bench, a pile of embroidery in her lap - she didn’t enjoy sewing in the slightest, but she could hardly afford paying someone else to do her mending. ❝In fact, I wanted to ask you something.❞
