Mina seldom had a chance to leave schoolroom. There was an irony in that. She had wished for years to finally be grown and permitted to leave freely, even with a chaperone if she must, only to find that she scarcely had the time or energy to do so.

Indeed, the only reason she had slipped out that afternoon was because a maid had already done the daily shopping in the city, and Mina hadn’t caught her in time to request paper. Rather than impose, this felt as good an opportunity as any to get some fresh air.

Having just accomplished said task, she was maneuvering the package to fit in her writing case as she weaved through the crowd. Unfortunately, her diminished attention was her downfall - she collided with some poor boy walking past her.

Her writing case and package fell to the ground.

❝My apologies- I really should have watched where I was going…❞

She stooped to collect her things, her brows knit with worry.

“Well, I–” The Doctor cast about in his pockets, dumping all manner of peculiar oddment into the young man’s hands: the black rooks from a chess game, string, several unopened packets of grape jelly, half a dozen small, cracked seashells. From the tangle, he extracted two coins and added them to the others in his hand.

“Let me see, now: three - six, two shillings, half crown. Hardly enough, don’t you think?” He nudged the boy again and showed him what he had. “I’d thought roast chestnuts were a little, ah - more affordable in this era, but we’ve all been wrong about something before, I suppose… What do you think? Will they take pity on us?”

Javert’s gaze raked briefly over the young man. From his tone the association was not a complimentary one. He was used to that. Police were often not liked, and he was liked even less. It didn’t even sting anymore.

“Do I then? Let me guess, your father?” Javert had a low opinion of fathers in general, as he had never met his.

genuine concern laces every word that rolls off of her tongue. her porcelain heart wrenches for him, her eyes twinkling with tears welling up in her brown orbs. angélique was not repulsed by him nor did she fear him, she considered him to be one of her sole friends in this dreary place despite all who shunned him.

Mina looked over at Smike, smiling softly. She had a great deal of empathy for the young man’s nervous nature, and was willing to go out of her way to assure him there was no need for alarm. It was the sense of balance and gentle patience akin to walking past a hare without giving it cause to flee.

❝Not at all,❞ she declared. She was sitting on a park bench, a pile of embroidery in her lap - she didn’t enjoy sewing in the slightest, but she could hardly afford paying someone else to do her mending. ❝In fact, I wanted to ask you something.❞

In Smike’s case standing ‘up straight’ wouldn’t be perfect, but she knew he’d give it a darn good try. “Look them in the eye, gently take their hand …” She was still showing as she told, the lad’s long, bony fingers now in hers.

“Say ’ a pleasure to meet you, my lady’, bow over their hand - you can lift it a little bit but don't pull - and just a very small kiss on the knuckle part, like this …”
