Alright I'm making good time. I have to finish this season in like,, today. I'm two whole disks in & I think I've maybe only been watching since yesterday so I can manage to get a disc a day then I have what like five days? but I watch a bit more than one dvd per day so I shouldn't take too long on the last dvd, I should be done in 4 days. Except I have work on thursday & friday. I should try to get it all done by wednesday. monday = 6 eps, tues = 6 eps, wed = 6 eps, that's 18 I only have 5 more so that's 2.5 on thurs & 2.5 on fri, IF it is not due until the end of the week oh crud...

#1 is from 1x12. Arthur is watching the guards round up some people who are to be executed for giving shelter to a sorcerer. When Merlin tries to argue with Arthur that maybe they weren't even aware the man was a sorcerer, he tells Merlin he shouldn't question his father's actions. Merlin glares at him but shuts up.

#2 is from 5x10, when the knights are chasing Finna and Merlin through the woods. Later in the episode, Finna and Merlin are literally "hunted like animals", with Merlin wounded by an arrow and barking dogs trying to sniff them out while they hide in an old tower. And in this case it's Morgana doing the hunting, but Finna and Merlin do spend a good part of this episode being chased around by both her and Arthur's knights.

#3 this is obviously Kara from 5x11. And yeah, I know she wasn't executed for having magic. It was more of a symbolic thing. I have a lot of sympathy for Kara. I don't think she deserved to die. We're never really shown Arthur executing people just for having magic, but when Kara asks him "You don't kill those with magic?", he doesn't reply.

#4/5 Merlin trying to save Uther in ep 4x03, of course + 5x09, Gaius and Merlin telling Arthur that only magic can save Gwen, and him being clearly conflicted about it. Maybe an image of the magic ritual at the Cauldron of Arianrhod would have driven the point home better, but I do like that scene. The intimacy of it, and Arthur looking so torn. It's not an easy choice for him to make, using magic, especially after what happened to Uther. But he does make it again.

#6 this is from ep 4x07, in which Gaius is kidnapped and Agravaine convinces Arthur that he's betrayed them. I love this episode, and I love this scene. Merlin's anger at Arthur. After everything Gaius's done for Camelot, he can't believe Arthur could think Gaius is a traitor. There's the irony of Gaius actually being guilty of what Arthur accuses him of (associating with sorcerers), only not in the way Arthur thinks. For Merlin, it's a painful reminder that his relationship with Gaius would be enough to endanger him if the truth came out. But also (and I'm verging into headcanon-territory here) I think it's easy for Arthur to believe Agravaine's lies, not only because of Gaius's shady past, but also because he's a sorcerer. He might have renounced magic, but that doesn't change his nature. And at the end of the day, no matter how much they've sacrificed for the kingdom, sorcerers are not to be trusted.

#6 from ep 5x11, again, this is Arthur and Gwen watching Kara's execution from the castle's balcony — with Arthur standing there much like Uther stood in ep 1x01, the first time we saw him.

The quotes are from ep 2x08, it's (part of) what Arthur tells Uther and then Merlin:

You hunted her kind like animals! How many hundreds have you condemned to death to ease your guilt?

You speak of honour and nobility! You're nothing but a hypocrite and a liar!

And yeah like I said, I don't know what point I was trying to make, if any.

I don't think Arthur was very much like Uther, in spirit — he certainly came close to a breakthrough at least a couple of times. He probably didn't pursue sorcerers as aggressively as Uther did, nor did he hate them as fiercely (if at all).

But does any of that matter if he did nothing to change things, in practical terms? How much do one's feelings matter, if their actions don't reflect them?

Welcome to Hong Kong - Arrow Music Notes 8x02

Oliver, Diggle, and Laurel return to Earth 1 after the destruction of Earth 2 on a new mission from the Monitor.  Familiar music and people from Hong Kong return as Tatsu questions Oliver’s faith in the Monitor, Laurel deals with survivor’s grief, and the Future Team Arrow is manipulated by JJ Diggle.

Oliver Queen 

Oliver wakes up after images flash of both the greetings and deaths of those that he lost, including Moira’s “You’re never without me, my beautiful boy” triggered by seeing Tommy and Moira from Earth 2 disappear.  The music repeats the violin melody from “The Promise” (2x20) when Moira was killed.  Another part of that melody (the violins in thirds that led up to Moira’s death) plays as the Monitor stresses how important it is that Oliver does not interfere with other earths and their fates the way he did for Tommy and bringing Laurel2 back.  Oliver counters that he wasn’t going to see her die again.  Oliver has seen so much loss and death and is still reeling from seeing a version of his mother and Tommy die that the idea of letting Laurel die again was not an option.  It is the theme of some of the most severe and painful loss in his life and a reminder of how great the stakes are.

Oliver and Diggle find themselves in Hong Kong with a return of the all the Hong Kong musical elements from Season 3 peppered throughout the episode heard in “Mean Streets of Hong Kong” (S3), primarily the ney flute (a Persian flute), crutales (tuned little cymbals), wooden percussion, gongs, and the erhu (a Chinese string instrument).  If they didn’t use an erhu, they have a synthesized version that is the similar affect.  These together provide the soundscape of Hong Kong in Season 3 and play as the setting is established throughout.  In the midst of fighting, Tatsu comes to help as Katana and her unique ney flute motif plays with an breathy aspect to it.  This theme returns throughout her scenes in the episode, especially in her fight with China White and when she talks to Oliver at the end after she thought she had almost died.  Her theme is heard in “Storming the Castle” (3x21) when she helps fight at Nanda Parbat. (JorahtheAndal has a suite of her music on YouTube now that the extra tracks are no longer on Blake Neely’s website.)

In a brief moment of quiet after the fight, Oliver has a chance to put his wedding ring back on with a mixture of sadness and resolve.  As he does so, flashes of Felicity in 3x20 (“you opened up my heart” and their kiss goodbye) and the 4x06 kiss “We’re going to be fine” pass through his mind as their theme “The One I love” (2x23) plays in the piano.  Oliver’s resolve to keep going is through the love of Felicity and knowing that she will find him.  His love for his family keeps him going.

Tatsu questions Oliver’s blind faith in the Monitor wanting a scientist involved with a dangerous virus, saying that it reminded her of how he used to be.  Especially in bargaining with the Alpha Omega virus that killed with her son and how the guilt and torture of the general changed him.  He responds that he has to believe that the Monitor is telling the truth in bringing order (plus he saw the end of Earth2) because otherwise he left his family for nothing.  He is sacrificing everything including himself to keep them safe and prevent them from disappearing.  As he pours out his heart in both anger and grief, the slow version of the Arrow theme plays in the strings “I forgot who I was” (1x05).  This theme is used throughout the series for moments of the heart when Oliver is connected to the core of being a hero: his love for his family and how that spurs him on.

At the end, after Tatsu almost died for the mission to find the doctor the Monitor required, Oliver took a step back to realize that she was right.  The cost might not be worth the mission. He needs to know more about who the Monitor is and whether following him blindly is the right call.  A variation (straight rhythm instead of syncopated) of “Scars” (1x01) plays in guitar harmonics as he says that they have already lost too many already.  This theme and instrument has been with Oliver since he looked in the mirror and saw his scars in the pilot.  It represents both the outward but more importantly, inward scars his trials and loss have left on him.  The slow version of the Arrow theme returns in horn (heroic) and violins as Diggle asks him what happens if they don’t like the answers and Oliver replies that there is always another way, quoting what Felicity has told him many times and what Tatsu had also reminded him as well. The music underscores that he is a hero determined to do what is right for all. He will find a way to save his family without letting people die along the way. He apologizes to Tatsu that she almost died because of him as the violin plays his Arrow hero theme and that she was right; the mission was not worth the cost.  He tells Tatsu that he will be looking for answers in Nanda Parbat as the duduk plays.  (I love the music for Nanda Parbat and am super excited for this next episode)

Laurel with the loss of Earth 2

Laurel is in shock over her earth and everyone she knew ceasing to exist.  As she angrily blames Oliver and demands the device to get back, a new harp theme quietly plays as she remains in denial that it could all be gone.  Her new life, her shot at redemption, the good people she had connected with all dead.  A version of this theme returns again but filled out with an alternating note between each melody note in the harp as she tries the device again later on, only for the guy she forced into helping her telling her that he can’t bring back a universe.  It returns one last time after Lyla shares her story of survivor’s guilt which gets the crux of the matter for Laurel: how is it that she survived when so many other better people were gone?  Lyla tells her to keep fighting in honor of the dead and that she could work on her redemption by helping people of this earth.  

Extra Notes: 

The Monitor’s violin, brass, and choral theme played both at his scenes in the beginning with Oliver and Lyla at the end.  It underscores that he is an otherworldly being.

China White’s electronic theme was back as she appeared to fight Oliver. (1x02)

Laurel’s Black Siren theme “Laurel, not Laurel” (5x10) played when she arrived at the beginning after screaming and then again after she screamed China White into the water.

There was a lovely piano moment when JJ and Connor sat down to have a heart to heart.  A moment of connection before it all went to pieces.

A new motif played as Mia gave William the fried flash-drive in both harp and bass harmonics with background electronics and he got really excited about it (reminding of Felicity music, combining Oliver and Felicity instruments but grounded in the future soundscape).  The four note theme does include the same notes as Mia’s Blackstar theme but in a different order.  Coincidence or on purpose?  I will be interested to see if it returns. 

Harp plays a repeated two notes as JJ reveals his plan and Mia tries to reach William on the coms.  Her mother’s instrument now connecting the two of them in concern about her brother.

As I was composing my posts on Jonsa parallels, I found some clues that made me inclined to think that Sansa would already be pregnant when she would (probably) be kidnapped by Cersei. I have stated this in my 1x04 parallels post. I also found quite a lot when I made 2x06/2x07 parallels which I will post soon. I don’t know if the child would be a bastard or if they had a chance to marry before. Since I saw several posts this morning about the kidnapping plot including a possibility of a pregnant Sansa that’s being kidnapped, I thought it would be exciting to post about the clues I found.

So all the clues would fit if Sansa is pregnant with Jon’s child, possibly a boy, and then she is kidnapped by Cersei. Sansa will give birth while still in Cersei’s captive. Jon dropped everything he is doing to rush and save Sansa and his child. Possibly Jon will arrive when Sansa is on labour.

Now why I think this would make sense with the story is first because Cersei and Sansa very much bonded around their womanly role and their capacity of birthing children. Also, bearing children and being a mother is such an important part of Sansa’s arc that I think it should be portrayed more than just an epilogue, it should be a part of the story. And with the way she bonded with Cersei it would make sense if she experience her childbirth close to Cersei.

In the very first episode, Cersei has already asked a very intimate question related to Sansa’s reproductive capacity.

Then of course their intimate talk in 2x07 when Sansa first had her period.

Meanwhile Jon’s theme has a lot to do with honor and duty versus love and family. There is a lot of foreshadowing for Jon to choose love or duty, and will you look at that episode title above when Cersei mention Sansa birthing a child.

Of course the biggest clue about Jon choosing between love and duty is in his conversation with Maester Aemon in 1x09. But let’s really look at that conversation shall we?

A newborn son. Now that is awfully specific and doesn’t make sense in the context of the story when it was being said. What makes more sense in the context is “brother’s smile” which refers to Robb Stark, but even that can be interpreted differently, which I will get back to later.

Let’s get back to Cersei and Sansa and how Cersei was telling the story about Joffrey’s birth. We know that Joffrey is Jaime’s son and not Robert’s. Her brother’s son. What could be better for Cersei than to witness Sansa giving birth to her own “brother’s” son?

And again, let’s look at the specifics of her story, yeah?

Cersei Lannister in 2x07 - A Man Without Honor

In Game of Thrones, stories told by a character often later happens to another character. I’m gonna go ahead and think that Jon will rush to Sansa during labour, and he will hold his newborn son in his arms. So Jon, Sansa’s brother (but not really) will father her child and will be by her side during labour. And Sansa will see “a brother’s smile” as he hold the newborn son that she just present him. I’ll add another statement from Maester Aemon here:

This was when he told Jon the story of the demise of his own family. Maekar was his father, and Aegon his little brother became king when he refused the throne. Aerys was Aegon’s son. He could’ve said “my nephew” but the words chosen here is “my brother’s son”.

There is a lot of parallels between Jon/Sansa to Sam/Gilly as well. I’m just going to point out the ones related to this theory. In 5x10, Sam asked Jon to send him and Gilly and the baby to Citadel so they would be safe.

“If Gilly stays here then she’ll die. And the baby that she named after me will die. And I’ll end up dying too to protect them...

Gilly and the baby is a package here. The package is always a woman’s love and her baby. More parallels with Sam/Gilly in 4x09. Sam was worried about Gilly after he send her away and Castle Black is preparing for the wildlings attack. He reads in the library about the wildlings and Maester Aemon came to chat with him. Maester Aemon started with the quote “love is the death of duty”, linking the conversation with Sam to his conversation with Jon. He knows Sam is in love with Gilly and worried about her.

Do you know what happens after this? Gilly comes at the gate, and Sam told Pyp to “open the gate” and then Sam told Gilly that “from now on, wherever you go, I go too”. Doesn’t that reminds you of the Jonsa reunion?

As if I need more evidence that Jon will risk everything to save Sansa, here is what Jaime said.

This conversation follows regarding Bran knowing about their affair and they are afraid he would wake up.

“And if he does, I’ll kill him. Him, Ned Stark, the King, the whole bloody lot of them until you and I are the only people left in this world”.

Now who do we know often going berserk over something? Yes, Jon, when it comes to Sansa.

Now a question of whether the child will be a bastard or not or if they ever get married before Sansa got pregnant. This is something I am not really sure, but there are some clues for the child to be a bastard.

The line that gets me here beside the parallel is “before too long”. That suggest the child is conceived early on. How early... we don’t know.

But would they ever? Would Jon and Sansa could ever do it before they get married?

I’m going to use Jon and Sam’s conversation in 4x09. First they use the “red hair” as a “hook”, again to link the conversation to Sansa, like they did in 1x04. Sam was asking what was Ygritte like.

Then Jon asked whether Sam has ever done it with Gilly. Sam answered that she just had a baby and that she never offered.

What vows Jon? That you would never father a bastard? What if Sansa offered, Jon? What would you do?

Note that this conversation happened as they are preparing to be attack by the wildlings and they thought they were going to die. Just like how they are in season 8.
