My family's been watching Pride and Prejudice (1995) on repeat since I was born. Yesterday I watched it with a friend for the first time in several years. She had never seen it before. It was fascinating to see her reactions and hear her prediction because it finally struck me that, to someone who hasn't known the plot since birth, not everything is predictable. You don't immediately know that Wickham is scum or that Lydia is foolish enough to run off with him. You don't know how Darcy will redeem himself. You don't know everything.
The other thing that struck me is just how good Darcy's redemption arc is. I've always liked Darcy, but I fell in love with Literary analysis only in the past few years. Actually paying attention to his flaws and then how he systematically corrects each one is so much fun. There's a reason why this book is one of the most well known classics, and it's not just because of the romance

It was October again—a glorious October, all red and gold, with mellow mornings when the valleys were filled with delicate mists as if the spirit of autumn had poured them in for the sun to drain—amethyst, pearl, silver, rose, and smoke-blue. The dews were so heavy that the fields glistened like cloth of silver and there were such heaps of rustling leaves in the hollows of many-stemmed woods to run crisply through.
Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
