Douman coloured doodle WIP I did back in January 2023.

It's old, so I'd want to redraw it to make it consistent with my usual style, but I figured I'd post it for now since Idk when I'll get the chance to redraw it.

FGO popped off when they created an emotionally nuanced complex complicated jester who deeply loves the human they're obsessed with 💖✨ They are simply PEAK

Douman and LimGuda are EVERYTHING to me I've dedicated my soul to them since December 2020!!! 💚🧡🐈‍⬛🍊

"Beautiful Carnivore, the All-Ridiculing" is such a badass title for them oh my goddd I'm obsessed

I take lots of breaks from FGO but I'm always here to see my faves 👁️ Like awakening the slumbering beast...

Hasendow (Showichi Furumi), Douman's character artist is really good at harmonizing colours and working with green and yellow tones

I tend to use cooler tones and saturate pink/red hues in my arts (though it depends on the art for me). It also has nice contrast against their reds and greens! 💖

I already loved the colours of the OG that I chose but the others are so cool to see. It's fun to see the way low opacity gradient maps shift the colours in subtle ways WHOAAA

It's super messy but it's honestly one of my fave doodles in terms of colours 💗 I'm a big fan of the colours too hehe ✨

I used to airbrush the skin colour over the hair (which is a popular stylistic choice), but I don't do it anymore cuz I think my saturated art style looks better with higher contrast.

I think that Douman doodle has some of the best colour work I've done

It's a rough draft WIP so it's pretty messy, but I love the way the colours harmonize on this one 🤭 💗 I should do colour drafts more often…

I think it's cool to use the same green in their earrings and eyeliner, in their hair as well hehe

When I do these rough colour drafts, it's like if I took a bucket of paint and splashed it on the wall. Helps me get a sense of colours!

I love picking colours, and I think it'd be interesting to take this kind of painting style further whenever I get the chance to refine it more 💞

I definitely want to lean into this messy painting style. I wanna get stronger at the painterly style!

Because of Douman and Kuroha (KagePro), I've always wanted to draw mild horror pieces 🥰💞 It'd be super fun to draw Douman and LimGuda arts with mild artistic horror vibes in the future.

My cute kitty is so versatile. They can be cute silly and be peak horror all at once!

I need to get stronger at drawing them. Douman's design is the most detailed and complicated out of my faves, but I wanna draw LOTS of LimGuda... AHHH...

Reminds me of when I was rereading the Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri Anthology comic by AU (@/delete_au), that has huge amounts of LimGuda (Douman/Ritsuka) crumbs. DRIVES ME CRAZY...

AU (@/delete_au) is a popular Fate/Grand Order (FGO or Fate/GO) fan artist that's been commissioned to draw official works for Fate (including official merch)

AU’s art style is so intricately detailed and gorgeous. The perspectives, inking, and shading are so gorgeous. Huge art goals for me.

The way he sulks like a cat that wants to be paid attention to when Ritsuka hardly reacts when they sees the maimed shikigami 😭 Please give your kitty lots of attention!

Like once again Douman wants Ritsuka to pay attention to him and searches for reactions from them, but also, the way he refers to himself as their "loyal retainer"

AU has a massive brain since the scenes, visuals, story and dialogue of this Anthology Comic were decided by them. It's also such a huge characterization surplus for Douman and such visual eye candy

Douman invited Ritsuka to fall into hell with them in-game in his My Room lines, and now they're the one inviting him, saying that they will drag him and take him along with them.

Douman tells them that the two of them are "bound by unbreakable/inseparable fate."

And the part where he sarcastically laughs at their speech by comparing it to Buddha's Great Vows, but also acknowledges their determination and tenacity... Aghhhh...

He makes this grandiose, deadly romantic speech back, telling them that they are "bound together by an unbreakable fate" (inseparable fate/karma)

JAW DROP??? THIS IS GAY AS HELL 🏳️‍🌈 LIMGUDA IS REAL!!! 💚🧡

The EN fan-translation is SO good. I love the usage of Saṃvega at the end.

I got stuck on some parts reading the JP version cuz of Douman's vocabulary... I got to clear things up reading the VN fan-TL, and it was interesting to see how it was translated in Viet, but yeah the EN fan-TL cleared up so many things for me.

They drew the Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri chapter in one of the FGO anthologies. LIMGUDA ALSO INTERACT IN IT, AND THERE'S TONS OF LIMGUDA FOOD HEHEHEHE... Their art is so gorgeous. They're one of my favourite FGO artists, their works are stunning.

The VN fan-TL is pretty much VERY similar since it's based on the same JP text as the source material, but I'll highlight some neat tidbits I noticed

JP uses 弘誓 (Guzei, “Buddha’s great vows”)

The VN fan-TL uses Tứ Hoằng Thệ Nguyện ("The Four Encompassing Vows") of Buddhism, the fourfold bodhisattva vow. Only difference is that it refers to it directly

Douman: Yes, that's right! You and this Douman are connected by an unbreakable “fate”

JP uses 因果 (inga, "cause and effect; karma; fate")

VN fan-TL uses "Unbreakable karma (cause and effect)"

Nhân quả = Karmic cause and effect in Buddhism

I love the wording of him describing the way he's bound to them as “Unbreakable fate”

It's so sexy and fits so well with Douman’s character, saying they have a connection of inseparable fate/karma.

Douman: En’e’gon’jyou. (“I abhor this tainted world, and seek rebirth in the Pure Land.”)

JP version has it as 厭穢欣浄 (En’e’gon’jyou, “I abhor this tainted world, and seek rebirth in the Pure Land.”)

The VN fan-TL translated it as: Yếm ly uế độ, hân cầu Tịnh Độ = "I detest and want to leave the defilement of the Samsara, and seek rebirth in the Pure Land"

厭離穢土 (Onriedo/Enriedo, “Abhorrence of [living in] this impure world”)

The antithesis of Onriedo is 欣求浄土 (Gongujyoudo, “Seeking rebirth in the Pure Land”)

These are Yojijukugo (four character compounds), and concepts of Pure Land Buddhism that became popularized in the Heian era.

The full term is 「おんりえど・ごんぐじょうど」 (Onriedo/Enriedo - Gongujyoudo). The two combined, make a pair.

The phrase is usually shortened to 厭穢欣浄 (En’e’gon’jyou/En’ne’gon’jyou)

In Buddhism, it means, “I am disgusted with this world (I want to leave the world of filth/suffering and stain), and seek the Pure Land [of Buddha]”

"Sherlock Holmes — speculated in the Camelot Singularity report as intended a Caster Servant, assumed the role of Advisor within Novum Chaldea. James Moriarty — launched a campaign to assume control of Novum Chaldea in tandem with eliminating his adversary, the younger counterpart of an Archer Servant who bears no such memory. Ashiya Douman — reported as the Caster of Limbo responsible for an experiment in another world prior to the bleaching, a Servant who sought to claim the seat of a Beast for himself and manufactured his a Singularity intended to evolve into a Lostbelt. Senji Muramasa — a man initially encountered within Caster of Limbo's experiment, responsible for the advent of Olga Marie, registered in Chaldea's database as a Saber-class once summoned separately.

If Senji Muramasa were a guide, if his role in the British Lostbelt might have been his true part, that would grant each side a Ruler and Alter Ego".

Though she trusted Ritsuka understood the point, the Servant herself was aware this route must have long become tiresome, like the padding of a tale so a cliffhanger might keep a passionate reader waiting — but there was no such thrill and wait they could not. Not if she was to adhere to the mage's wishes.

"Ruler, Avenger, Alter Ego.

Gregori Rasputin appears an Alter Ego, though personal experience with his vessel, combined with the alteration of his fellow Apostles' classes, I believe it possible he may be unveiled as compatible with the final class. Which would leave Chaldea's.

It is known an Avenger has guided and safeguarded your mind for a considerable time; a Servant capable of masquerading his class. Ritsuka, I only say this to spare you a repeat of what you experienced with Ruler — but Goetia and I suspect Edmond Dantes is the final Apostle watching Chaldea.

so this is what it's about.

part of Ritsuka hoped that her suspiciouns would be unfounded yet that was akin to wishing for a miracle. the way memories progressed for her in this city, it should be expected by now. eyes glance down at her hand which raised slightly to better view her Command Seals. yes, they had returned, along with her rights to be a Master. something she had traded in the underworld in order to come back. something she had to fight one last time for in that fog-ridden land, lit only by a black sun. thinking on it now, it reminded her far too much of the mists, lit by a burning red eclipse. of how it seemed she had been fated to face death within such a situation. Gilgamesh had been right. Spirale or that bleached earth, it didn't matter-- her 'fate' was waning.

concerned gaze moves back up to Saber's face, the dip in her brows growing deeper. she knows how this goes.

Saber's knowledge of what the one using his name for is already known, something revealed to her last year. specifics never came to fruition until it had already happened. the first time Saber had tried to tell her anything after the foray into the seventh Lostbelt had been met with resistant-- just thinking on that causes ire to flare but she forcibly stomps it back down. not now. " Yes. Something we need to do in order to breahc the barrier to get back to CHALDEAS."

to return to a base she once considered a second home. the thought of walking those frozen halls again, now tainted with the truth of Marisbury's intentions and the long-since horror of the attack years ago now, unsettles her. yet it is unavoidable, that much she knows. but Ritsuka does not know why Saber is bringing this up. what left was there for her to know? another secret that Goetia keeps? if it isn't important, then she doesn't care to hear about it. and if it is something like what happened with Holmes.....she doesn't want a repeat of last time.

I’m planning for Douman and Ritsuka to wear matching Việt phục (“Vietnamese traditional clothing”). The specific type of Việt phục they’re wearing is called áo tấc (“10 cm dress”). It’s also called áo tế (“Ritual/Ceremonial dress”). Tấc is a unit of measurement. In modern times, 1 tấc = 10 cm, and it’s the width of the hem of the dress or bound seam. 

Áo tấc is the historical predecessor to Vietnam's national dress, áo dài (“Long dress”). Áo tấc is also called Áo ngũ thân tay thụng (“Five-panel robe with loose sleeves”). It’s a type of Áo ngũ thân (“Five-panel robe”) with large loose sleeves. Áo tấc was worn by all classes for various occasions. 

I have an art idea of Douman and Ritsuka wearing green and red áo tấc... Red is a colour worn by Vietnamese brides. I usually see Vietnamese brides wear red, pink, or gold, etc., or bright colours at their weddings. Red, blue, green, and pink are common Vietnamese wedding colours! So that’s why I want LimGuda to wear green and green áo tấc.

That reminds me, I've had the idea of LimGuda wearing áo tấc in my head for the longest time and I haven't refined the rest yet because I haven't been able to decide whether I want Douman’s hair in braids or ponytail LOL. These are my ideas for them:

Douman

Green áo tấc with black trousers, hair based off his 1st Ascension design, but styled into braids or a low ponytail. I think I’ll end up going with the braids! I’m also thinking of another version with him wearing black and red áo tấc with black trousers, based off his 3rd Ascension design.

I think for Douman, I'd use the same muted emerald green he wears. Áo tấc are usually simpler in style compared to outfits like áo nhật bình (“Square collared dress”). 

Ritsuka

Red áo tấc with white trousers, maybe a red khăn đóng (turban headpiece), white and red beaded necklaces, and elaborate gold hairpins. As for their hairstyle... maybe I can have their tied back in a bun with some loose strands (the common Vietnamese bride look). Or their hair could just be let down loose.

LimGuda in in Việt phục… wearing my culture’s traditional clothes??? I AM ON THE FLOOR. The Nguyễn dynasty's áo tấc and áo nhật bình make great wedding attire. Red is such a classic colour for traditional wear and weddings to, and Ritsuka would look so kissable in red áo nhật bình~ My wifey wife wife...

I wanna draw them in áo nhật bình eventually, but the patterns on nhật bình are more colourful and detailed, so I'm saving that for another time.  

Extra rambles

Douman has such a good design. Their design is amazing, but it’s so detailed and complex, so I wanted to draw LimGuda in áo tấc so I can have simpler designs to refer back to whenever I want to draw them quickly.

I still have to redraw the áo tấc Ritsuka though, it's an old doodle from 2021, and I improved a lot since then, so it’s outdated compared to my current art style. Somewhere around ~2022, I started using a weighted inky brush instead, and I think it suits my art style more! I love using weighted inky brushes! I've been using it as my sketching/lining brush ever since.

I read an article before that talked about how combinations of green and red in Viet weddings were considered a symbol of courtship and marriage... and romantic with erotic symbolism... Oh my god... LimGuda...

I read a post by @/lotusinjadewell that in Southern Vietnam, Viet brides would wear 2 áo ngũ thân on top of each other, with the outer layer being green, and the inner layer being red. That reminds me of Douman colours...

LimGuda wearing green and red Việt phục (Combusts) I wanted to choose those colours because green and red are also notable wedding colours! Anyways I'd have many more things to say about them, but it'd be an essay, so I just wanted to let people know about my immense love for them!!!

I wanna draw them more, since they’re one of my top favourite ships ever and incredibly important to me, but Douman’s design is the most detailed and complex out of my faves. Still, I'd like to become powerful at drawing them someday. Plus, I wanna give myself simpler outfits to fall back on whenever I don't want to draw their canon outfits (especially Douman's which has too many details)

Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri Anthology Comic by AU

The Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri anthology comic has such beautiful art by AU (@/delete_au). Douman invited Ritsuka to fall into hell with them & now they're the one inviting him. Douman tells them that the two of them are "bound by unbreakable/inseparable fate." JAW DROP??? THIS IS GAY AS HELL 🏳️‍🌈 LIMGUDA IS REAL!!! 💚🧡

TYSM to Carli (@/carlikun) for translating it... I got stuck on some parts reading the JP version cuz of Douman's difficult, esoteric and archaic vocabulary... I got to clear things up reading the VN fan-TL, and it was interesting to see how it was translated in Viet, but yeah the EN fan-TL cleared up so many things for me.

They drew the Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri chapter in one of the FGO anthologies. LIMGUDA ALSO INTERACT IN IT, AND THERE'S TONS OF LIMGUDA FOOD HEHEHEHE... Their art is so gorgeous. They're one of my favourite FGO artists, their works are stunning.

Side B, Round 1 (Match 4) *Clash of Casters*

On the left: A Chinese military general and politician who served Liu Bang during the Chu–Han Contention and contributed greatly to the founding of the Han dynasty. Han Xin was named as one of the "Three Heroes of the early Han dynasty" along with Zhang Liang and Xiao He. Best remembered as a brilliant military leader for the strategies and tactics he employed in warfare and was undefeated in battle. For his accomplishments he was considered the "God of War". On the right: Priest and onmyouji from the Heian period. A monster who stood opposite Abe-no-Seimei, the greatest Heian sorcerer. The Alter Ego is quite different in nature than the Onmyouji priest of the past and the caster version of this self does not have the fused evil spirits of Itzpapalotl, Chernobog, and Akuryo Safu. Wait, why did Seimei want to save Ashiya Douman, his rival, who hates him? Can you translate this scene when you will reach there? This feels so weird for Seimei who suffered a lot because of Douman's shenanigans.

I was asked to translate the scene twice before, so I will when I finally get to beat Limbo, I just have been pretty busy grinding Granblue and dealing with real-life stuff (sick cat! He’s better tho!). 

Abe no Seimei considers Douman his friend.  If you’re curious, these fanarts seem inspired by the epilogue between them. However, the living Ashiya Douman isn’t the literature/legend Ashiya Douman who only exists as his rival and enemy who hates him. Whether he might eventually become a rival or not, a person isn’t only about beating someone, you know. Plus the Singularity takes place before all the bitter and tragic fates took place, including the final battle of Yorimitsu’s 4 Heavenly kings and the Oni of Mount Oe. The Alter Ego (”Caster of Limbo” who is the one you summon in the gacha) version is, however, born of that single aspect: Ashiya Douman as Abe no Seimei’s bitter and evil rival. That’s why he’s an Alter Ego.

Despite being an Alter Ego, Limbo hijacked the living Douman’s Caster summon in that version of the Holy Grail War (where every Servant is a Caster), mindbroke Douman and possessed him to carry out his plans in secret. Hell World Mandala is very shounen-esque. What’s a shounen without the good old “best friend becoming evil and a hero’s rival” cliche? That particular plot passed from Kintoki to Seimei though. If you think about it, it’s natural Seimei gets the good old “I will save my friend from darkness” stuff. He may never give up. Certain fox woman derided him in the India lostbelt because he was arrogant in not wanting to destroy his enemy, but to tame him.
