Locust Lane by Stephen Amidon is a book that's generating a little buzz. (Fun fact - this is review 300 for me on Netgalley) "A young woman is killed in a house in the affluent part of Emerson, Massachusetts. Three teenagers were with her that night and one is quickly arrested for her murder. A man driving through late that night thinks he saw something but he is hesitant to go to the police because of his history. Two of the families are quickly protect their sons and daughters while the other is left on his own to navigate the system. What really happened that night?" This book is a slow burner. It's told through the POV of the moms of the teens as well as the mother of the victim. There are very few likable characters in this book and there are a lot of characters. On the audiobook the transitions between POVs was quick and hard to catch sometimes. Maybe it was the playback speed (1.5) but the character voices were not especially distinctive so that made it tough sometimes to figure out which POV was playing. The beginning was slow - felt like a typical "affluent kids are protected by the system" story. The last half moves a little quicker but I did not like the direction it took. I wanted to see some justice, some redemption, some remorse. There is a twist - you'll eventually see it coming. There is not a pretty ending from Amidon. There is a hint there will be more but then you're left hanging to wonder what happens. I know they're only fictional characters, but I want to know. This is not a thriller. Fans of slow-burn drama will enjoy this. Atomic Love was an August 2020 pick from #BOTM I listened to the audiobook narrated by Cassandra Campbell. “Rosalind Porter worked on the Manhattan Project as the only woman physicist. Now, years later, distraught over the destruction her work brought, she works in a department store selling jewelry. Her former co-worker, Thomas Wheeler, gets back in touch. He had broken her heart but begs for forgiveness. An FBI agent also reaches out to Rosalind because he thinks Wheeler is selling nuclear secrets to the Russians. Rosalind doesn’t know who to trust. And the man lurking around her store is making her nervous..,” A couple of great characters here. Rosalind - a brilliant physicist who is not interested in being a home-ec wife. Charlie - the former POW, whose hand was destroyed in the war. An attraction between the two. Reminds me a little of Jake and Sadie from 11/22/63. Russian spies and the real threat of nuclear war. The conflict that Rosalind feels between wanting to be with Wheeler again and not wanting more heartbreak. This book also reminded me of The Secrets We Kept. Great audiobook performance. Valentine is the debut novel from Elizabeth Wetmore and a #botm pick. I did the audiobook. “It’s 1976 in West Texas. Odessa is in the midst of an oil boom. One night 14-year-old Gloria gets in the truck of Dale Strickland, an oilfield worker. He drives her out into the desert and brutally assaults and rapes her. In the morning she stumbles for shelter at the only house she sees. Dale is arrested. But not everyone wants justice for a young Mexican girl...” So many things to make you angry here 😡 The misogyny - the blatant disregard for a young girl - the unwillingness to believe a witness because they’re a woman - not wanting women to work if they choose. There were some good parts - DA helping the young Vietnam vet get his truck back. And the hidden strength and backbone so many of the female characters showed. I liked the karma of the ending. And I appreciated Glory’s ending. Some tough parts to read in this book. Nice debut from Wetmore. clean face & hair, curled up w a good book & a cute kitty and I’m in2 my Pokémon Go look :p so far, “The Dreamers” by Karen Thompson Walker is really, really good! Has that slow, creeping up on you kind of fear that you’d expect from an “unknown virus killing people, no idea on how to defeat it or even defend against it!” plot but it also feels slightly like a faerie tale which makes me very excited & interested in how the novel is going to play out! I’ll definitely post about my thoughts again once I’ve finished it! Cassandra Campbell narrates the novel & she is a favorite “comfort” voice for me, personally, due to her narrating a batch of books I read when I very first became ill nearly two years ago now!
