Amidst It All — Constance Langdon x OC
Summary: Cassandra comes down with the flu days before she and Constance are to set out for their very first case. Luckily, Simon and Constance are the best caretakers a girl could ask for.
Word Count: 582
Warnings: None
Cassandra lay on her side, curled up beneath the covers, her long, dark hair spilling over the pillow. In her arms, Simon, Cassandra's long haired tabby that seemed ever so fond of Constance, purred softly, his amber eyes half closed in contentment. The room was quiet save for the gentle rhythm of Cassandra's breathing and the almost harmonious accompaniment of Simon's purring.
Constance approached the bed, careful not to disturb the sleeping pair. Cassandra's face was slightly flushed, a sign of her fever, and her lips were parted as she took slow, even breaths.
"Sweet girl," Constance murmured under her breath, her southern drawl even softer than usual. She carefully pulled the blanket up, tucking it around Cassandra and Simon, making sure they were both comfortable.
For a moment, Constance simply stood there, watching them. The house, with all its ghosts and past horrors, felt strangely peaceful in this moment. Cassandra had a way of making even the darkest places seem bearable, and Constance knew she would need that light if they were to embark on this journey together.
"You're going to need your strength," Constance whispered as she gently brushed a strand of hair from Cassandra's face. The younger woman stirred slightly but did not wake. Constance took a moment to appreciate the calm before turning and heading to the kitchen.
The day passed slowly, and every so often, Constance would return to Cassandra’s side. She’d place a hand on her forehead, frowning at the persistent warmth, or simply sit in the chair beside the bed, reading a book to pass the time.
As evening fell, Constance decided to stay the night, unwilling to leave Cassandra alone in her state should she need her. She settled into the chair with a blanket draped over her legs, keeping a vigilant eye on both Cassandra and Simon.
When Cassandra finally woke in the middle of the night, bleary eyed and disoriented, she found Constance dozing in the chair beside her. Simon had shifted, now perched on the pillow beside her, watching her with those knowing eyes.
"Constance?" Cassandra's voice was hoarse, barely more than a whisper, really.
Constance stirred, instantly alert. "I'm right here, dear," she replied. "How are you feeling?"
"A little better," Cassandra said after taking a sip of the water she’d left on her bedside table. Her eyes softened as she looked at Constance. "You didn't have to stay."
Constance scoffed lightly, though her expression remained gentle. "Of course I did. What kind of partner would I be if I left you to fend for yourself?" She brushed a hand over Cassandra's hair again, a gesture that had become more frequent since they'd gotten together. "We can delay the trip if you’re not up to it, you know."
Cassandra shook her head. "No, we'll go. I just need a couple more days to get back on my feet."
Constance nodded, knowing there was no point in arguing. Cassandra was as stubborn as she was, and that was saying something. "Then rest up, sugar. I'll make sure you're ready when the time comes."
Cassandra smiled softly, closing her eyes again as Constance adjusted the blanket around her. Simon curled closer, his purring resuming in earnest.
As Constance watched over her, a sense of warmth spread through her, one she hadn’t felt in years, maybe ever. In this cursed house, with the woman she’d never expected to care for so deeply, Constance Langdon felt, if only for a moment, truly at peace.

the cast
of course, we have our brave and guileful hero, Todoroki Shouto, as Odysseus himself, Nobody, King of Ithaca, and Son of Laertes. you play the role of sweet Penelope, Helen’s pretty mortal cousin. brash Antinous is portrayed by Yoarashi Inasa. and Shinsou Hitoshi is our silver-tongued Eurymachus
the first glance
Shouto first comes for the hand of your demi-god cousin, Helen, who is said to rival Aphrodite in beauty. you don’t like this farce your uncle puts on, summoning men from all over Greece to compete for Helen’s hand in marriage; she is still a child, only 16, and with no say in her future. still, you think, rather guiltily, better her than you. you do your best to avoid the suitors who come in hope of Helen’s hand, lest the see you and decide that they would like a consolation prize. downward gazes, veiled hair, and thick, draping robes all help to deflect attention, and you mange to pass unnoticed for the first couple weeks. all of this changes when he arrives. it’s said that nothing escapes his watchful gaze, and when his icy eyes sweep over you, you can feel yourself freeze as you pull your shawl just a little closer. he pauses for a fraction of a second, and yet you are unimaginably relieved when he moves on to inspect the crowd of nobles gathered in the corner
the pursuit
that night, you appear only as needed for the festivities before hurrying off to your rooms to weave. you’re rushing through one of the more abandoned hallways, preferring to walk a little extra rather than run into a drunk man, and when you turn the corner, room in view, Shouto stops you. maybe stop is too vague of a word; rather, he cages you in, not only with a casual hand against the wall, but also societal niceties. you desperately want to push him away, run for the refuge of your room, but to do so would be to slight all of Ithaca and bring his wrath down on your father. Shouto knows this, too. he tries to woo you first, honeyed words and a silver tongue, but you’re the daughter of a king. you’re used to gold. he tells you that the minute he saw you hiding away in the corners of shadows that his heart would beat for no other, and that he had to have you no matter what it took.
‘such a delicate thing, whose humble beauty is overshadowed by your cousin’s,’ he says. it doesn’t escape your notice how docile he makes you out to be, and while you were raised to be demure and refined lady, if Shouto really thinks you’re going to sit back and let him take you away, he’s wrong. he seems to sense the little fire of rebellion deep within you, but rather than putting him off, it only stokes his desire. lust flares in his eyes, and from that moment onward you know that you’ve trapped yourself in an obsessive relationship
the snare
Shouto leaves Tyndareus’ house with an alliance of the Greek city states and your hand in marriage. his quick wit and silver tongue allows him to secure the visiting nobles into a united agreement; Tyndareus will choose a husband for Helen, and all other men must leave without quarrel, and come when called upon. in return, Tyndareus will support Shouto in his pursuit of you. you know who the man is before your uncle even speaks, for in your agreement to marry Shouto, you asked that he might provide a kind and worthy man as Helen’s spouse. once again Helen lords over your life, but you cannot find it within yourself to hate her for it. after all, she is but a mere child, still too young to understand that her beauty is not really hers, that her life will always be in the hands of other men. still, one could argue that you are but a child, too. the ceremony is beautiful; you wear a dress of the finest fabric, a material softer and finer and lighter than any sort of linen you have ever encountered but one that Shouto assures you is worth it’s weight in gold. if he thinks to buy your love with material goods, you’ll allow yourself to be spoiled but you will never part with your affection willingly. at least, that’s what you think. Shouto has other plans
the early years
even from the beginning Shouto’s love is overbearing and extreme, but he’s a powerful king who treats you well and kept your cousin safe so there’s not much you can complain about. you’re just barely out of childhood, children who have been burdened with great power and yet the love and devotion he looks at you with is unparalleled. you have a feeling that he would fight even the gods to keep you. he’s kind and considerate; for the first two years of marriage he neither beds you nor tries do, despite the pressure he must feel to produce an heir and the weight of your family’s expectations. these gifts, these personal liberties he allows you to have, the way he lets you roam the island at your own leisure, this is why you fall in love with him. it’s odd; you never thought you would love the stoic king of Ithaca, but it seems that Aphrodite has other plans for you. on your twentieth birthday, you welcome him into your bed for the first time, and less than a month later, you discover that you are with child. it’s the next turning point in your marriage
the worse years
after the birth of Telemachus, Shouto’s love changes once again. once forgiving and relaxed about your interactions with others, he seeks to hide you away for only himself to see. the worst is when men approach you. it does not matter what their intentions are, nor their age nor stature nor standing; Shouto claims that his heart beats only for you, and thus yours should beat only for him. his demands to know where you’ve been and who you’ve talked to become more and more intense, until the island loses it’s queen. you are a prisoner in your own home, with Shouto smothering you in love, spending the whole of his day just lounging with you while he addresses kingly matters. bitterly, you think how you have never had any power to your name, not the way that men do and not the way that Shouto does. your rooms are nothing but a gilded cage, and you are almost glad when he is summoned for war. almost. after all, you do love the soft, kind boy that he once was
the war
throughout the war, you hear of your husband’s exploits. his bravery, his cunning, his skill. whenever you do not hear about him, your heart aches in fear, though you do not know if you wish him alive or dead. a year after the way has ended, when Helen has been reunited with Menelaus again, when Agamemnon is dead and Cassandra gone, when Aeneas has set sail for New Iliium, not yet Rome, the suitors come trickling in. at first, you do not know what to do, for festivities and mean both ceased to exist within the palace walls after the birth of your son. two catch your eye, bold Antinous, known as Inasa, sweet beyond his brash exterior, and sly Eurymachus, whose wit you see in your husband and whose charm is only his own. by the end of the second year after the fall of Troy, it is obvious who your heart beats for. the sight of purple sets your heart alight, and his small smiles are as sweet as the finest honey. you wonder if this is how Odysseus felt when he first saw you.
‘call me Hitoshi’, he says, and the way it rolls off your tongue is a sign that this love was meant to be. he asks for your hand in marriage three times. each time a flash of red and white causes your throat clog with fear, and though you know that you deny him out of protection, it makes the tears no less painful. even the loss of your husband cannot set you free
the reprieve
after Hitoshi’s third proposal, you set about weaving a shroud for your vanished lover. each day you weave ten rows, and each night you unravel five more. the sun-drenched days you spend with your violet-haired lover only fuel a blazing passion within you, but when he is gone, when you are alone in a cold room meant for two, the icy gaze of your husband haunts you, and you cannot help but delay the inevitable once more. you will bury your love, one day. you just cannot find the courage now. in the end of the fifth year after the fall of Troy, you finish the shroud.
Hitoshi is too respectful to rejoice, but you can see the relief in his eyes that you have finally put the memory of your husband to rest. plans are made, friends contacted, and suitors long vacated return to your halls in preparation of a beautiful wedding. the palace swells with life once more, the boisterous laughter of the men filling the halls and driving away the cold of the night. when night falls, you rest your head against Hitoshi’s chest, his arm slung carelessly across your shoulders, and you listen to the steady sound of his heartbeat, and rejoice in the constancy of his love.
where Shouto is the sun, bright and brilliant and life giving, but prone to flares of temper and burning those his affections focus on, Hitoshi is the moon; silver-tongued and soft, reflecting the radiance of others and giving the world a gentle glow. yet, despite your happiness, despite the love and life that is promised, you cannot help but feel a pit of worry in your gut
the unraveling
not more than a week after the former suitors’ arrival, your anxieties are confirmed in the form of a beggar. he is naught but an old man, merely claiming to know of the great king Odysseus, yet you cannot help but lean away from Hitoshi, your lover, and sit as if unhappy with the festivities. something about your mysterious visitor doesn’t sit right with you, and when he proclaims that Odysseus has escaped death, you know why. Inasa laughs, the scent of wine and honey heavy on his breath, and declares Odysseus dead.
‘his wife has burned the shroud she wove, not more than a month ago. dead men do not return five years after their fall.’ you want nothing more than to silence him, fear brewing in your stomach, and you are too busy giving panicked glances to your dear friend to notice how the stranger’s eyes train on you alone. a curt nod affirms Inasa’s statement, and your voice is steady when you answer.
‘less than a moon ago I laid the memory of my husband to rest. it has been ten long years, five years too long for a living man to return.’ you say this, and yet, you cannot wonder if this is a test . who is this man who claims to know of your husband, whose eyes burn like ice against your skin? you have to know, and perhaps it is your curiosity that causes your downfall
the slaughter
when the guests wake the next day, you propose a challenge. it’s selfish of you, borne out of a need for reassurance, a need to know that your husband truly is dead and that your love lives and will remain living. the great bow of Odysseus, only to be strung and shot by the man himself, is brought out, and forty axes are planted in the great hall.
‘this bow was my husbands, may his soul rest in Hades, and it was said that only he could wield it. who among you will try?’ man after man step up, failing good naturedly and patting Hitoshi on the back when he too does the same. you don’t mind his inability to wield the bow; in fact, it comforts you that your husband has been laid to rest, that his memory will not live on even in his weapons. then, the beggar from last night comes forward, and though you know that the decrepit body of his will be unable to sustain the force needed to even string the bow, fear runs thick in your blood. it is like you have been struck by Zeus, watching as the stranger strings the bow with ease, before launching an arrow straight through the great axes in the hall. your husband stands, and shakes off the illusion like a fur coat.
‘my love’ is all he says, and before you can react there’s an arrow buried in Agelaus’ heart and an expression of horror burned into his face. he orders you to the bedroom, your shared bedroom, but you stand still in shock, unable to move as he slaughters the men you have called friends in the very place you once called a prison. soon, far too quickly, there is none left save for brave Inasa and your lover Hitoshi. the look of disgust on your husband’s face as he rounds on Inasa, sword drawn, is unimaginable.
‘you come into my house, flaunt the rules of xenia, court my wife, and desire mercy? you will have no justice except for the bite of my blade.’ Inasa dies inelegantly, loud voice lost in a fountain of blood pouring from his throat. as Shouto stalks towards Hitoshi, it as all you can do to throw yourself around your lover, despite your please, Hitoshi steps out from behind you, hands placating and silver tongue spilling words of peace and goodwill. you want to tell him that silver tongues fail against tongues of gold, but it is too late and in the end all you can do is hold your love as the life bleeds from his eyes, forgiving and gentle to the very end
the ruins
the hem of your fine silk dress is soaked in blood when Shouto pulls you into his embrace, and you call brokenly for the servants to keep your son from seeing the carnage. he should never have to know the monster that his father is. as you look into his face, worn by the horrors of war and lined by time, you cannot help but hope that this is not your husband who has just perpetuated such a crime, that the soft red and white haired boy you once knew is dead, and a god holds you in their arms instead.
it’s a desperate, last ditch attempt to save the face of a man who once brought the life of Ithaca to you, and when you ask him to prove that he is Odysseus, that he is Shouto, your husband, you hope that he cannot speak anything but lies and half truths. he asks what you would want to hear from him, and you tell him that you have tired of sleeping alone and would like him to move to the bed in your bridal chamber, as only Odysseus himself would be able to lift it.
Shouto smiles, the years slipping off his face, and for a second you’re staring into the eyes of a man who helped your cousin, a man who waited two years to even touch you because he wanted to respect your decision to love him at your own pace, the man who gave you your greatest joy, Telemachus. he strokes your hair, love clouding his beautiful eyes, and tells you that it cannot be done, for he built the bed himself around a living olive tree. your heart sinks in disappointment, and you know that no divinity stands before you, only a god of a man. as you fall into his arms and sob, he holds you close, arms just a little too tight as he whispers soft comforts in your ear.
‘I am home, my love, and you have been here, waiting faithfully for me’

Tales of Heroism OC Profile #1
So about a year ago I started the Masks: A new Generation tabletop game with two of my friends. The premise of the game is basically Super heroes DnD. It was fun but didn't last as I was the only one between us with interest in super heroics and the story we were making kinda turned into an Urban Fantasy setting. However I still had deep love for my super hero characters so I kept adding to the world I was making, making a Google Doc of character profiles and plot ideas.
Now since this Quarantine has me loosing my mind I decided to post them. I dont know how many I will do, but I have a lot of love for these characters and this setting I made, so if you happen to see this, I hope you enjoy them too! Please ask me questions! If you have your own super hero OC tell me about them! Super heroes are cool. We need more of them.
SOCIETY OF CHAMPIONS HERO DOSSIERS HERO ID: M-19T-M34 HEROIC ALIAS: Hourglass CURRENT RANK: 103 FULL NAME: Aaliyah Curtis SEX: FEMALE HEIGHT: Imperial: 6 Feet 10 inches. Metric: 208.28cm RACE: African-American HAIR COLOR: Brown EYE COLOR: Black Sclera, glowing green iris. ANOMOLOUS APPEARANCE?: Yes. Across the left side of her face, her chest, her shoulders, and her lower back and upper thighs, she has small green stones embedded in her skin. Cracks of green energy may also appear near these stones. Her left arm has been completely replaced with a long durable spike of this green stone. DATE OF BIRTH: July 10th, 1953 (Note made by Kelsey B., Archivist; Despite knowing her DOB, the age of Hourglass is constantly in flux due to the nature of her powers. Refer to Professor Scath’s medical reports for further analysis and data regarding this) NEXT OF KIN: N/A POWER OF ATTORNEY: Cassandra Clark ORIGIN OF POWERS: Mutation( ) - Inherited Genetics ( ) - Forced Experimentation ( ) - Cybernetic augmentation ( ) - Cosmic Force (X) - Extraterrestrial ( ) - Extraterrestrial experimentation ( ) - Divine Force ( ) - ORIGIN OF POWER NOTES: Archivist Kelsey Bernard. I have spent an hour with Hourglass trying to record the exact origins and circumstances of her powers, however she was frustratingly dismissive of my attempts. All I could gather is that when she was young she somehow fell into the dimension she refers to as the ‘Eternal Epoch’. May I personal suggest that is a ridiclously pretentious name. Just call it the time zone or something. These heroes and their silly names. Anyways she fell into the ‘Eternal Epoch’, a dimension of pure time, whatever that means. Time is an illusion everyone knows that. It was there she gained her powers, and had the green crystals embedded in her chest, stomach, face, and where she lost her arm. And gained the cool sword arm. God how cool would that be having a sword arm? Randy wouldn't steal my lunches if I had a sword arm. I wonder if Hourglass could threaten Randy for me. I mean shes a hero and he is a vile criminal that keeps stealing my grilled cheeses so... POWERS: 1.) Personal Time Manipulation: Her base power and theme she based her name on. Given to her from her time trapped in the Eternal Epoch dimension. She can speed herself up or down, and any object(s) or person(s) in her line of sight. She can’rewind’ a person(s) or object(s) movement to up to a minute. 2.) Expounded attacks: A variation of her Time manipulation ability. Hourglass can manipulate the feeling of one of her attacks, and replay it rapidly. As such if she punches you once she can make it feel like 100 hits. She can do this for other physical sensations as well. 3.) Time Healing. A variation of her time manipulation ability. Hourglass may use her abilities on any wounds to regrow and repair damage. There seems to be a limit to this as Hourglass can not undo limb lose, or to heal internal injuries. 4.) Physical boost: As with all Meta Humans Hourglass has increased durability, endurance, strength, and speed. How much of this is related to her Time Manipulation ability is unclear 5.) Portal manipulation: Hourglass is able to open portals to the Eternal Enoch. It seems she can enter and exit the dimension at will. It seems as if she can be pulled into the dimension unwillingly as well. When asked about this Hourglass simply replied “What can I say, when you time travel you learn to prank yourself in annoying ways”. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: 1.) Experienced Boxer. 2.) Basic fencing and swordplay skills. PERSONALITY AND TEMPERAMENT: Observed and documented by Archivist Kelsey Bernard. In my time spent with Hourglass one would label her as laid back. She relishes any moment to sit and rest, and will usually respond to any threats and calls to duty with a sigh and an eye roll. Despite this she seems to enjoy being active in her encounters with the League of Rouges. More than that she also treats the villains she comes across with familiarity. In a battle I witnessed between the speedster Constance Motio AKA Motor, Hourglass would ask about her family and school life. Motor seemed happy for the talk, and even asked Hourglass for life advice. In turn Hourglass likes to involve the Reporter Cassandra Clark in these conversations as well, which leads me to Hourglass’ relationship with the reporter. Why is it heroes are always drawn to reporters? Is it like a universal law? Cassandra Clark, or as she likes to be called Cassie, was one of the first to discover Hourglass. The two seemed to form a friendship, and are never to far apart. I observed Hourglass spending much of her free time with Cassie, and despite officials of the Society asking her not to, will regularly involve Cassie in ongoing investigations. WEAKNESS: Does Orange soda count? Or as she calls it ‘Sody-pop’. Jeez showing your age a bit there Hourglass sweetie. It is fun to say though. Seriously she chugs those things. All the time. More professionally though, I have observed no physical weakness. You will need to refer to The Umber Knights Combat files. As to her powers I observed that the more she uses her time manipulation powers cracks of energy appear on her skin. She tends to not think ahead and is very reactionary in the moment. It is easy to provoke her, and she is quick to loose her temper. Especially when dealing with Ricky Delaney, AKA Stalemate. Whenever Stalemate is involved she tends to act very petty and rash. She is also unable to assume a secret identity due to her anomalous appearance, though she does not seem to mind this. CLOSING NOTES: Archivist Kelsey Bernard. God am I glad no one really reads these general profiles. I wouldn't have nearly as much fun with them. Hourglass is hot and may I just say I totally ship her and Cassie. Am I allowed to say that? Imma do it anyways. Next time she comes in to collect her stipend I am going to ask her to go knock Randy’s head into the fridge.
#Original Writting#Writting#Oc#Original Character#character profile#Tales of Heroism#Hourglass#Hourglass is one of the main characters of my story and one of my favorite characters I ever came up with#She is sassy and tired and just wants to drink orange soda#Fun fact Hourglass' hero ID is a reference to Mandrake the Magician#He is considered one of the first super hero comics#Cassandra Clark's name is also a reference to two DC comics characters#Cassandra Caine and Clark Kent. And overall she is inspired by Lois Lane so#Kelsey Bernard is based of how I think I would be if I had to doing boring paper work and Interveiws with super heroes all day#Randy is based on ever terrible person ever#Fuck you randy

Garden - May 22, 2019
Part of my Resolution19. Read it on AO3.
Prompt: You promised your firstborn to a witch, but you’re terrible with guys (x)
Fandom: Original Work - Part of my Contemporary Arts series, but can be read alone
Art: “Falling Garden” by Gerda Steiner & Jorg Lenzlinger
Words: 3574
To this day I'm still not sure what possessed me to make that promise. But it was Cassandra's 23rd birthday, her proper coming-of-age, and I'd been half in love with her since we'd both started at the Conclave. And I'd been so focused on not letting that slip that I'd forgotten to get her a Gift (which was completely inexcusable for a witch's 23rd).
So when it had been my turn, and she'd looked at me with her deep brown, liquid eyes set in her gorgeous, russet brown skin, I had blurted the first thing that came to mind.
"My firstborn."
And that had caused quite a stir, let me tell you.
--
Now, an off-hand, extravagant promise like that might not mean a lot to you, but it had been a Gift at Cassandra's Convocation, and that meant something.
A vow was a vow, and an oath was an oath, and a promise was a promise. And all three were binding to the depths of your soul.
To complicate matters further, I had no idea how I would get a firstborn in the first place. I was awkward around women, completely uninterested in men, and the thought of any activities that might result in a child made me break out in a cold sweat. In short, I was completely and utterly screwed.
--
My first instinct was to laugh it off and immediately reverse course, drowning my embarrassment in nachos and berating myself for my idiocy. As I mentioned, that wasn't really an option, see: eternally binding promises. And, like, the kind of promise that lingers, that becomes unfinished business and will keep you tethered to the mortal world long after you should have left. (This would be especially awkward in my case, since firstborn are really hard to come by once you're incorporeal.)
Instead, I just froze. Cassandra's eyes widened in surprise and the utter stillness that had fallen at my pronouncement broke in a rush of noise.
"What?"
"Did she just?"
"I can't believe--"
Cassandra's eyes didn't leave mine and I stared back at her, unblinking, too panicked to think of anything.
"--never heard of such a thing--"
"--can't imagine--"
Cassandra blinked and looked toward the rest of those gathered. "Enough." Her quiet pronouncement settled the crowd. "Shiraz has given her Gift." Her dark eyes found mine again, contemplating me, and I felt like I was drowning in their depths. "And I have accepted it." I felt the suffocating weight of an unfulfilled oath settle around me.
Yep. So screwed.
--
I sat there nervously bouncing my leg while anxiety twisted in my stomach, waiting for the last four people to give their Gifts. Theirs fell much more into the standard practice for Convocations: a book on magical theory from Madam Constance, three pale dewdrops plucked from the base of a mountain from Beatrice, a dozen tulip bulbs from Imelda, and her great-grandmother's pearl necklace and earring set from Cassandra's mom.
Once the last person in the circle has given their Gift, the Convocation is technically over. This signals the beginning of a party designed to appropriately celebrate the end of a witch's minority and the official completion of her education. My plans had been to retreat from the circle as quickly as possible and see how far I could get, re: nacho drowning. Even as the other witches moved closer to congratulate Cassandra (and probably to see about getting her take on the whole "firstborn" thing, knowing them), I could feel her watching me.
I immediately changed course from the buffet to Madam Constance. The Chinese woman didn't look surprised when I grabbed her elbow and pulled her a little further from the crowd. "Help," I hissed.
Madam Constance looked amused. "And what are you looking for help with?" she asked, raising a single eyebrow. "It seems rather simple from here. You offered your firstborn as a Gift to Cassandra and she accepted. You now owe her your firstborn."
I stared at her hopelessly. "Help," I repeated, quieter.
This got me a sigh. "Shiraz," she said firmly. "Your Convocation was last month, so I am no longer your teacher. But," she added at my dismayed expression, "I will remind you of this, which you should have remembered from Madam Alvarez's seminar on bindings," she said pointedly.
I wracked my brain for the lecture in question and could only bring up the hazy memory of Veronica inadvertently swearing herself to be Octavia's servant for the day and Cassandra's chiming laughter at the spectacle.
Luckily, Madam Constance continued. "Oath magic cannot be negated or diverted. It can, however, be interpreted. You offered your firstborn." Here her amused eyebrow made an appearance again. "You were fortunate in not specifying that it had to be a firstborn child. Any creation you pour your heart, soul, sweat, blood, and tears into may count."
It was the best news I had heard since... actually, since ever. It was the best news I had ever heard.
"Heart, soul, sweat, blood, tears," I repeated, nodded. "Got it. Thank you very much, Madam Constance!" Before the woman could stop me, I gave her a quick hug before darting away. I heard a resigned sigh from behind me.
"Heart, soul, sweat, blood, tears," I chanted to myself. "Heart, soul, sweat, blood, tears."
--
I did manage to get away that night without talking to Cassandra, which I thought was a minor miracle at the time. It just meant that she had to track me down the next day.
I was brainstorming ideas for a firstborn when there was a knock at my door. "Shiraz?" It was Cassandra.
The Conclave had a sprawling campus, and even though its primary purpose was as a school for magically talented women, it also served as a community center and meeting place. Hence why I still had a room there, even after my Convocation.
My blood ran cold when I heard her voice. A stronger witch than I would have simply opened the door. Then again, a stronger witch would have probably just 'fessed up to Cassandra before all of this started. Or just remembered to get her a Gift.
As it was, I simply pretended I wasn't home.
After a moment, she knocked again. "Shiraz?" She didn't sound a lot like her normal, confident self. She was nervous, and that made her tentative.
The realization had me on my feet, and before I could second guess myself, I had opened the door. "Hi, Cassandra."
She looked beautiful. Well, she always looked beautiful, but this morning, with the weight of my vow on my shoulders, I figured it was probably too late to pretend she didn't steal my breath every time I saw her. Her hair was frizzing a little out of her neat braids, and she looked tired, but her skin still glowed in the sunshine.
"Shiraz," she breathed. "Hi."
We stared at each other awkwardly for a moment before I remembered that I should have some manners. "Come in?" I asked, moving out of her way. Cassandra nodded and walked past me into the room.
She took a breath. "I--"
I interrupted her. "Before you say anything, I want you to know I have this under control."
"You do?" She looked skeptical.
"Yes," I said firmly. "I talked to Madam Constance, and I think I know how to get out of this."
"Get out of it?" she asked. "I actually wanted to--"
"It'll be fine. I've got a couple ideas, and we'll get this thing sorted right away," I assured her.
Cassandra didn't look reassured. "Shiraz, I think we need to talk about--"
"No!" I blurted. "I don't-- We don't need to talk about anything. It's fine."
She huffed sharply in frustration. "Shiraz! We need to talk about your Gift!" I was going to interrupt her again, but she threw up a hand to stop me. "Don't. Please." I kept my mouth shut. She took a breath. "Shiraz, why did you give me such a Gift?"
Her eyes were beseeching, and I caught a glimpse of something that might have been hope. I opened my mouth before I knew what I was going to say, but nothing came out. For a moment, I almost told her the truth. I almost told her about how much I thought about her every day. About the way sunbeams danced in her hair and gave her a golden halo that left me awestruck. About the sweaty palms and nervous butterflies I got when I thought about kissing her. About how many Gifts I had considered and discarded until I was left with nothing but my heart to offer.
I almost told her. But what I said instead was, "It was an accident. I panicked."
Her gaze shuttered and dropped. "Right. An accident," she echoed.
"Like the mayor's poodle," I clarified.
"Like the poodle," she repeated hollowly. "Of course."
I wasn't sure what else to say.
"I'm going to fix this," I told her again, desperately hoping that might repair what I was beginning to realize I had broken.
She looked at me for a moment, and I'm not sure what she was thinking about, but then she nodded and left.
In hindsight, it probably would have been better if I had just talked to her the night before.
--
There were certain rules of magic that were universal. Oaths and vows were one of the big ones, as I had found out. The structure and form of spells was another constant. But each woman who walked into the Conclave had her own talent, a single flavor that characterized her magic.
Imelda, for example, was particularly good at destructive spells. She could probably tear down a building if she really needed to. Most of the time, though, that manifested in small ways when her emotions got too strong. When she got annoyed at homework, lights flickered. When she got angry, neatly alphabetized books would randomly rearrange themselves. Things like that. (She wasn't really allowed in the library anymore unless Veronica was there to help keep her calm.)
Yeah, Veronica was a bit of an empath. Her thing was emotions. Which was great when she was upbeat; it really helped us all focus. But when she and her boyfriend had a nasty breakup over Skype... Well, it wasn't pretty.
Lucinda did electricity and tech; Cassandra was basically one with plants; Madam Constance had this cool thing where she could see and manipulate other people's spells; and I-- Well.
My talent wasn't quite like everyone else's. I had yet to find a way to distill it down to a single idea. If I had to sum it up, it would be accidents. When I was seven, I exploded my uncle's can of soda all over him from across the room because he had mentioned a little too loudly that a woman needs to know her place. I was thirteen when Madam Ramirez had taken us on a field trip to a fundraiser. The mayor had made a small joke in his speech; I was the only one who gave a large laugh. It was slightly awkward; I was embarrassed; I accidentally vanished the mayor's pocket poodle. I was twenty-three when I panicked at a friend's Convocation and offered her my firstborn as a Gift.
To be fair, the last one might not have actually been magic.
--
After Cassandra left, I spent the rest of the afternoon alternating between turning our conversation over in my head, trying to figure out exactly what I had missed, and desperately attempting to forget the conversation entirely by focusing on possible firstborns.
It was around this time, as I was dourly meditating on my terrible accident talent, that I remembered Cassandra's.
Plants. Of course.
I then pulled a piece of slightly crinkled paper out of my recycling bin (one side of which contained the half-finished checklist of thank you cards from my own Convocation, but the reverse of which was blank), fished a pen out of my sock drawer, and set to planning the most elaborate plant-based Gift I could hope to give Cassandra.
I'd like to say that it was all smooth sailing from there.
--
The next time I saw Cassandra, I was at the Conclave's library. I had a general idea of what I wanted to do, but my ideas were severely limited by what spells I knew. I had hoped that Madam Florence might have been able to help, but she just scribbled down a list of introductory books on a variety of spell forms and impatiently shooed me away.
I was staring blankly at the two dozen unopened books stacked around me at the library table when someone slid into the seat across from me. It was Cassandra, of course.
I hadn't seen her since the awkward conversation in my room the week before, and I'd been kind of hoping I would be able to avoid her a little longer. I still wasn't sure what I had said to put that look in her eyes, but I'd had grand schemes of skirting around her for months until my Gift was done. Then, of course, my oath would be fulfilled, my Gift delivered, and everything would be able to go back to normal.
Well obviously that wasn't going to happen now.
"Cass--"
"What's your plan?" she interrupted. She looked tired, but otherwise neat and put-together as usual. (In comparison, my messy ponytail and worn Conclave sweatshirt felt particularly shabby.)
"What?" I asked reflexively.
"Last week. You said you knew how to deal with the whole...Gift thing," she gestured vaguely with one hand. "So. What's your plan?"
I looked at my table of books. It looked particularly dismal in light of her sharp question. I was suddenly much less confident than I had been before her arrival (and I hadn't really been that confident to begin with).
"Um," I stalled. "Are you sure you want to know?"
"Yes," she said firmly. "You said you knew how to fix it. If it was an accident," her voice faltered briefly on the last word, "then I won't let you do it on your own." She lifted her chin to look me square in the eye. "It's not fair to you." Then she folded her hands on the table in front of her, as if waiting for a counterargument from me.
I didn't have one to give her.
"Uh, okay," I told her. "That might actually be best. I was probably going to have to get help from someone anyway," I admitted. "The spell structure is kind of beyond me." I sighed a little at the intimidating stacks surrounding me.
"Okay," she repeated, obviously not expecting me to agree so quickly. "So what's your plan?"
And then I told her about the Garden.
--
Cassandra's natural affinity for plants made them a natural choice for any Gift I could give her. But after offering her my firstborn, dewdrops and tulip bulbs weren't exactly going to cut it.
Outside the window of my room at the Conclave, there was a grassy courtyard, complete with tree. I'd been staring at it, wishing for some kind of inspiration that would bring me from "plants" to an actual, viable idea. The tree was maple, but it reminded me of Newton anyway, who had watched an apple fall and calculated gravity.
And that led me back to thoughts of falling apples and plants and falling in general and--OH
I had to fish a couple more pieces of paper out of my recycling to scribble down all the details that flooded my mind after that.
I had a vision of a falling garden, flowers and leaves eternally suspended above the floor in a constant array of motion and life. In my mind's eye, it was a brilliant riot of reds, yellows, pinks, and purples set against a vivid background of greens. There was a side hall with a vaulted roof that was rarely used, which would be perfect for this. Though maybe there was a way to make it portable? So Cassandra could take it with her when she left the Conclave...
And I scribbled and dreamed and pushed all thoughts of reality out of my mind. Because I couldn't master my talent or remember lectures about bindings, so how was I going to pull this bit of magic off?
--
Cassandra and I spent six months working on the Garden.
She had a stronger grounding in theory and a much better idea of what kinds of plants we should use than I did, but she also didn't have any better idea of what spells we would actually need to use to create the Garden.
I was lucky that she loved the idea as soon as I told her about it. I had only just come up with it, and I wasn't sure what I was going to do if she hated the very idea of a falling garden.
So we spent six months together digging through theory books and then spell books. Madam Florence gave us a couple pointers after I told her what we were working on, which helped direct us a little better. Neither of us had classes anymore, so we spent nearly all our time on the Garden.
I mean, we took breaks, of course, but otherwise we worked on the Garden. Even during meals we'd talk about the Garden. I'd tell Cassandra about a spell I'd just read about that probably wouldn't work, but it's kind of nifty anyway. And she'd just watch me with a warm smile and something fond in her eyes. Then it would be her turn to tell me about a new addition to the communal greenhouse and how it would be perfect for the Garden. And her eyes would light up and her hands would illustrate the shapes of the flowers, and I would lose my breath watching her.
(Cassandra and I did miss the occasional party or movie night, which was fine, though that did mean we missed some gossip. By all accounts, Imelda and Octavia had a huge falling out after one movie, where apparently Imelda stormed out after the screaming match. I'd heard she ended up at an art museum of some sort. Considering her talent, I'd hate to see what that place looked like when she was done.)
Every so often, we'd stop early for the day to help someone pack or throw them a farewell party. Slowly but surely, our classmates were finding work away from the Conclave and leaving. Veronica moved to Paris. Lucinda ended up in Silicon Valley. Kiara went back to Mumbai. I didn't ask Cassandra when she would be moving. She didn't ask me either.
And then, abruptly, it was done. --
I had spent so much time with Cassandra focused on finishing the project, of creating the Garden, that I had completely forgotten Madam Constance's words.
It was only after the final spell was cast and the growing tension surrounding us had snapped, sending flowers skyward, that I remembered. Cassandra was looking around the room in awe, spinning in wide circles to see the entire thing. Any other time, I would have been held spellbound, completely captivated by the sheer joy on her face. As it was, I stared blankly at the far wall in horror, a cold sinking feeling washing over my as I realized that I hadn't been paying attention. The heavy weight of my unfulfilled promise hung on me, and I almost stumbled.
My thoughts flickered wildly. What had she said? "Blood" was one of the things, right? I looked over my hands desperately. Had any of the flowers cut me? The leaves? What else had she said? "Sweat", maybe? There hadn't been that much physical activity, and Cassandra had done most of the actual plant work that had been required. What about--
"Hey," Cassandra said softly, grabbing my hands gently and holding them. "What's wrong?"
"I--" Her brown eyes were full of concern, so I looked over her head at the slowly tumbling flowers. I wasn't sure how to tell her. How did I explain that all the work we had done had been wasted? That it had slipped my mind, and as a result I was back to the beginning and completely out of ideas?
"It's yours," I told her helplessly, dropping my gaze back to hers. "It's your Gift, Cassandra."
Her hands were warm on mine, and one slipped out to brush my cheek and gently cup the side of my face. "No, Shiraz," she said. "It's ours."
I felt lighter than I had in months, the touch of her hand sending butterflies wild in my stomach. It took me a moment to realize that the giddy weightlessness wasn't just from feeling her skin on mine. The oppressive mantle of the Gift had been lifted, my promise fulfilled. A Gift offered, accepted, and delivered. "Oh," I breathed.
That's when Cassandra kissed me.
So I guess it all worked out.
--
Looking back at all of this from the benefit of a decade's distance, I'm pretty sure what Madam Constance meant was that any child required sacrifice, dedication, and commitment, whether the child was human or not. The "heart, soul, sweat, blood, and tears" she had mentioned were more of a metaphor than a literal checklist.
(It took me a couple years to figure that part out.)

Before Her Eyes - Chapter Five (Time For Herself)
Summary: After a troubling night, Cassandra takes a well earned day off to rest, recuperate and plot her next move. A trip to Constance’s is in order.
Word Count: 2,054
Warnings: Mention and slight description of murder
Cassandra's night had been terrible. While Nora kept her promise about Thaddeus not waking her, if she was even still in the other room, she wouldn’t have slept a wink anyhow. Not after the nightmare. It felt so real, just like it was happening all over again.
Her phone rang. She picked it up to see the time on the clock was 4:44. No one should have been calling her at this hour, but she answered anyway. "Miss Reagan," the officer asked over the phone.
"Speaking," Cassandra replied, wiping the sleep away from her eyes. "What’s going on," she asked.
"I’d really like to speak to you in person," the officer said.
"Why, what’s wrong? Did something happen?" Cassandra was wide awake now, her anxiety flaring and giving her a rush of adrenaline.
"There’s been an incident, Miss Reagan. Again, I really feel like you should come in so I could speak to you in person."
"Just tell me," Cassandra demanded, raising her voice. It was if her body knew what was coming.
"Your family has just been found dead in their home. I’m terribly sorry."
Cassandra dropped her phone in shock at the news. She froze, hardly even blinking as she half listened to the officer's voice still coming from the dropped phone. She couldn’t go to the scene, but she felt compelled to anyhow. They’d probably already considered her as a suspect. She’d have to come in to the station to get the rest of the information. She later learned that the officer who’d called her had been a rookie, and that he’d been reprimanded for calling her at all. He’d found her number on the fridge. It was her new one that she had just given her mother the previous week.
She came into the station to be questioned, and that was the moment she’d first seen the crime scene photos. At seeing them, she screamed and cried until she made herself sick. It wasn’t real to her until then. It was no more than a plot to one of the horror movies she’d loved so much. It was worse than any horror movie, seeing her family like that. More blood and body parts than they were human anymore. The murders were visceral, inhuman, and Cassandra immediately suspected something supernatural was to blame.
She woke up feeling nauseous and was restless for most of the night after that. She maybe managed to get in about four hours, mostly before the dream, but that was nowhere near enough. At least she didn’t look as tired as she felt. She splashed some water on her face in the bathroom and took another look in the mirror. Time to start a new day whether she liked it or not.
She was going to take a day off from everything. She had an article to turn in the following day, but she’d gotten most of it done already, the rest could wait until she was able to stay awake enough to finish and proofread. Today was going to be about resting and refueling and figuring out where to direct her search next. She wandered downstairs and out to the kitchen where she caught sight of Constance’s note from yesterday. Bleary eyed, she picked it up and read it over again. Brownies sounded like the perfect way to start her morning and put her nightmare behind her. She didn’t put in a lot of effort to get dressed. She had put on a slightly oversized grey cardigan, a white tank top and black leggings before she came downstairs. No reason that wasn’t good enough.
Cassandra headed outside and made her way to Constance’s house next door. She breathed in deeply, hoping her lack of rest wouldn’t show on her face, then she knocked. She waited only half a minute before Constance came to the door. She still had her hair down and was dressed in a gorgeous silk robe. What time was it, Cassandra wondered. Had she come too early? "Cassandra, come on in. I hadn’t expected you so early." The two of them walked into Constance’s kitchen and Constance gestured for Cassandra to take a seat.
As Cassandra pulled herself out a chair she began to feel guilty. Perhaps she should have called first, or at the very least she should have checked the clock. And what was she doing here anyway, after the night she had. She shouldn’t be using Constance as an escape from her problems. "I’m sorry, I know it’s early, I just felt that I could use a little sugar this morning." Cassandra's cheeks flushed a light shade of pink when her choice of words sunk in. "I mean, chocolate. I had a rough night last night."
Constance brought out a plate of brownies and sat the dish in front of Cassandra. Taking a chair for herself, she turned it to face Cassandra's and placed her hand over hers. "That house has been known to keep people up. You haven’t let it get to you, have you?"
"No, it’s not the house. At least I don’t think it is. The house is quite lovely, actually. It’s just this thing I’m trying to take care of," Cassandra explained vaguely, not sure about how much she should inform Constance of at this point. "I’ve been working on it for years, and I just keep getting stuck," Cassandra continued to vent. It felt somewhat good to even get a little of it off her chest, even at the expense of keeping Constance in the dark.
"Tell me," Constance nudged, wanting Cassandra to feel that she could trust her.
Cassandra sighed heavily, considering her options. Constance knew about the house's history, was acquainted enough with the supernatural not to consider her insane, and she seemed genuinely concerned for her. So Cassandra began her story. "Six years ago my family was killed. There was no trace of human evidence found, not even the slightest hint of someone being there. It was horrific. The police declared it a cold case almost on sight. I have been looking for some explanation as to what could have killed them ever since. It may sound crazy, but I don’t think it’s human. All signs point to something supernatural. But, I have to know regardless. I have to be able to let them know that I found the answer so they can rest."
Constance laid a hand on hers and it felt so reassuring, so comforting. She hadn’t told anyone this before, aside from her old mentor and of course Simon. It felt like the weight of the past six years had been lifted off her shoulders, not removed, but it had undeniably lightened her load. Sure, Constance may want to send her to an asylum now, but it felt good to say it out loud to someone other than her cat.
"I can’t imagine how awful that must have been," Constance soothed. Cassandra had received many such sympathies and she thought they’d lost their effect over the years, but something about Constance was so genuine that she didn’t feel like her words were empty ones.
"Thank you," Cassandra said, filling in the appropriate response as if it were second nature, though she actually meant it this time.
"So how did your meeting go yesterday," Constance asked. Cassandra had almost forgotten she’d even told her about it at dinner two nights ago.
"It answered one question but brought up a hundred more. That was one of the reasons why I didn’t sleep last night," Cassandra told her.
"Well you’re welcome to stay here today for as long as you like. Get away from the house, those books, all your worries."
"Really?"
"Of course, dear. It’s the least I could do."
Cassandra summoned up a weary smile in thanks. Maybe she could do with a day away. At least a couple of brownies and a nap. Go back later, refreshed, finish that article she had due and figure out her next move. That sounded nice. As for Simon, Moira could take care of him. She’d done a good job picking up her slack as it was.
Cassandra helped herself to a couple of the richest brownies she’d ever tasted, praised Constance endlessly for her baking skills and then asked if it would be alright if she took a nap. Constance happily obliged, showing Cassandra to her guest room. "Take as long as you need. I’ll be around the house all day."
Cassandra thanked Constance for what felt like the hundredth time that morning and her overtired mind finally allowed her to easily drift off to sleep. It was nearly two in the afternoon before she woke up. Cassandra walked out of the guest bedroom feeling a lot more rested than she had when she got there. Constance was puttering about in the kitchen, now dressed with her hair up the way Cassandra usually seen it. It looked good both ways, Cassandra thought.
"Oh, you’re up. I was hoping you’d be up in time for a late lunch. I put it off as long as I could."
"You didn’t have to do that," Cassandra said.
"After the dinner you gave me the other night, I had to repay the favor." Cassandra could hardly argue with that, and whatever it was smelled good, so she sat down for lunch. The two women got on as they always did, pleasantly conversing with an air of flirtation in the mix. Cassandra was starting to see herself really falling for Constance. A relationship, however, was not something she thought she could balance with all of her other pressing work. She didn’t even know if she could consider this a relationship yet.
After lunch, Cassandra felt ready to head back home. "This has been exactly what I needed," Cassandra told Constance. "I really can’t express how grateful I am to you for letting me stay here and clear my head. I mean it."
"You’re welcome anytime," Constance said with a smile, and it didn’t sound like just a simple pleasantry. Cassandra thought that Constance may have actually meant it. Cassandra smiled back and picked up her plate of brownies. Constance gently, yet intentionally grabbed her wrist and stopped her exit. "I mean it," she insisted. "Anytime." Then Constance leaned forward and gently kissed Cassandra on the cheek. So maybe it was a relationship after all, she thought to herself as she closed her eyes, letting herself just be in the moment. The heat only crept to her cheeks when Constance pulled away. With a shy smile, Cassandra bid her goodnight, and began the short walk home.
"Oh, Simon, I’m home," Cassandra singsonged as she stepped into the foyer. Taking the brownies to the kitchen, she looked around for the cat, who appeared out of nowhere when she stepped into the kitchen. "There you are," she said, bending down to pet the animal. She sat the covered plate on the island, poured Simon an early evening meal and took off for her library. It took her only half an hour to polish up her article and submit it. That was one thing off her to do list. Now, where to go from here, she wondered.
Stepping over to the shelves upon shelves of books, Cassandra disregarded the tomes on demons, having pretty much ruled them out thanks to Mr. Norrange. Nothing seemed to call to her save for Phineas Black's book. She pulled it from the shelf and sat it at her desk. She cracked it open, intent to begin some more reading, but she couldn’t concentrate. Maybe she’d save if for tomorrow and look at it with fresh eyes. Today hadn’t been for work, not really. She should keep it that way for the rest of the evening.
"Come on, Simon, we're going to watch a movie," Cassandra declared. She rose from her desk and advanced towards the living room with a purpose, the cat, who'd joined her after his meal, now trailed behind her. Picking a classic B-movie from her small collection, she popped the horror flick into the DVD player and hit play. And that’s where she spent the rest of her evening and night, with the occasional break to pick up a snack, until she and Simon eventually fell asleep together on the couch.

Before Her Eyes - Chapter Three (It Begins Again)
Summary: Cassandra delves into her research, finds a promising new lead, and has dinner with Constance, which is definitely not a date.
Word Count: 1,999
Warnings: Mention of murder, but otherwise just some mystery and fluff
Her routine was much the same the following morning. She got up, this time with her alarm set for eight, got dressed, since she had hung up all her clothes in her closet the day before and went downstairs to feed the cat. She ate breakfast as well today. She had many hours of research ahead of her and she became so easily focused that she often forgot to eat altogether some days. Unhealthy? Perhaps, but somehow she'd managed this long.
After breakfast it was straight to the library for her. She browsed her books, fingers lightly trailing over the bindings as she skimmed the titles. She paused at a personal favorite of hers. An In Depth Study Of Supernatural Occurrences by Phineas Black. He’d been her old college professor, mentor, and friend. She’d spent a year working alongside him after she’d graduated and he taught her most of what she knew about the supernatural in that time. She often opened his book to read his note to her, though she no longer needed to crack it open to know what it said.
Cassandra, may this book help in your search and one day provide you with the answer you so long for. It’s out there and eventually you’ll find the right place to look. Your mentor and friend, Phineas Black
After recalling the touching inscription, she let her hand travel on, until she finally pulled a book on demons and documented cases of real possessions. By the time she closed the book, she felt like she was on a first name basis with many of the demons written about inside. A rather unpleasant feeling, one would think, but it for as long as she’d devoted herself to this field of study, it no longer got under her skin. She could name a vast number of creatures from folklore that most people had never heard of, and rattle off the names of demons by the dozens. She could even recite the most famous cases of real and alleged possession. But none of it mattered. None of it answered the only question she cared about. What had killed her family six years ago?
Cassandra already felt herself becoming discouraged. She knew a move wasn’t going to automatically solve her problems and give her answers, but some naive part of her expected more. She expected a breakthrough, a miracle even, but she knew that was silly. Life didn’t work like that. And the only way to find the truth was to dig until no more digging could be done.
Putting the book back on the shelf, Cassandra soon selected another. Continuing on the topic of demons, which had always seemed like the most promising area for answers, she opened the front cover. She had picked this particular volume up at an antique store. It had been covered in dust and the words on the spine were hardly legible, but to her it looked promising. This was the first time she’d ever sat down to read it. There was a name scrawled in faded ink that looked newer than the book, despite the faded quality. Cassandra pulled her reading glasses out of her desk drawer and squinted through them to read the signature. Benjamin Norrange.
She moved the book off to the side and switched over to her laptop. She typed the name into google and scanned the results. It appeared Mr. Norrange was a known demonologist who’d participated in exorcisms firsthand and had a wide knowledge of all things demonic. It might not hurt to hear what he had to say on the subject. She made her way over to his webpage and looked over his calendar. He’d be close by in just a little over two weeks from now. He’d be speaking at a local convention and Cassandra couldn’t believe her luck. It was possible that this could just be a coincidental dead end, but it could also be fate finally giving her a break. Either way, it looked like she was going to a convention.
Cassandra shut her book, sending a bit of dust flying that she skillfully avoided most of. Slipping the volume back on the shelf, she decided to quit her research for the day. She was feeling too amped up to concentrate. A potential lead was something she hadn’t had in months. It felt good just to have something to hope for again.
Spending the rest of her evening dusting and humming a tune, even at the end of the night she still felt energized. A bit bored with nothing left to do, she sat on her bed and spoke to Simon. "I should have Constance over," she said. "The house is all dusted, and everything is unpacked. She seemed rather nice. What do you say, Simon?" The cat looked up at Cassandra without much enthusiasm. He didn’t seem to mind the idea, so Cassandra was going to go through with it. "Do you think dinner would be too formal," she asked as a follow up, to which she again received a noncommittal response. Cassandra smiled to herself. "Dinner it is then."
The next morning, Cassandra called up Constance who accepted her dinner invitation. They agreed on the night before Cassandra's big convention. At least she was going to have plenty of time to figure out what to cook. Time seemed to fly by for Cassandra after that, as if after her phone call, she’d hit a fast forward button instead of end call. She felt like she was finally headed somewhere. Where exactly, was yet uncertain, but she wasn’t just stuck in the same old rut. A promising new lead, and an exciting new neighbor was enough to keep her going for the next couple of weeks. She read through a few of her books, making notes in a journal as she read, memorizing more facts as she went. She wanted to make a good impression on Mr. Norrange. He had to take her seriously, after all.
Finally the night arrived. Cassandra had put all her books away by noon, took a shower to ensure her hair would be dry by dinner and got to cooking. She didn’t go with anything too challenging. A simple meal of chicken and rice worked nicely for her. It was classy, relatively healthy and also fairly easy to cook. She read up on what wine to pair with it and picked up a bottle at store not too far from home. She had never been quite so excited for a simple dinner. She went to her bedroom to make sure her hair was still okay and realized she’d almost completely forgotten to get dressed. She’d only put on an old sweater and some faded out jeans while she was busy preparing dinner. Now she needed to change before Constance arrived.
Simon meowed from her bed as she rifled through her closet in a hurry. "My gosh, you’re right, Simon. This isn’t a date. I shouldn’t be stressing so much about what to wear. But I have to find something better than these old things." Cassandra went back to skimming through the clothes in front of her. She decided on a long sleeved, wine red shirt and a nice black skirt that went just a little past her knee. Not trying too hard, she thought. "I just want to look presentable," she told the cat, but Simon had lost interest. With a dismissive wave towards Simon, Cassandra smoothed down her skirt and went downstairs, and not a moment too soon.
By the time she had descended into the foyer, her doorbell rang. Putting on an effortless smile, Cassandra answered the door. "Come in," she greeted. "Dinner is just about ready." Constance grinned and stepped into the house. Moira had offered to keep an eye on the food to make sure nothing burned, but when Cassandra walked into the kitchen she was nowhere in sight. She shrugged and checked on the meal. Everything seemed just fine. She dished the food and tentatively carried both plates in at once, a risky move for her, but one she thankfully pulled off. She dashed back into the kitchen and grabbed the wine and their glasses. With everything she did, she couldn’t help but think in the back of her mind that this all felt like a date. She was beginning to wonder what Constance thought of the whole thing, but she was not about to ask her.
They sat across from one another at one end of the long dining table. The rest of the grand room was rather empty save for the two of them occupying such a small part of it. "You make for quite the decent cook," Constance said. "I’m more of a baker myself. I should have brought us dessert."
"Oh, no, I’m glad you didn’t go to the trouble. This is the first decent meal I’ve had since I moved in and I’m not sure I’ll be able to make room for dessert after this."
The conversation picked up and dropped off sporadically, the interim filled with the chicken and rice. It was actually quite good. Cassandra had surprised herself. Once they had finished their meal, Cassandra rose from her seat to begin the cleanup. She ran some water over the dishes, then leaving them to soak for a while, and she’d finish the job once Constance had gone. As soon as she stopped running the water, she heard the faint sound of music. Specifically, a cello. Vivien. She had completely forgotten to ask her not to play tonight.
"Is that music I hear," Constance asked as Cassandra met her in the hall. Apparently she was too late to stop it. Cassandra floundered for an explanation, but no words came out. "Shall we dance then," Constance supplied when Cassandra's own words had failed her.
"H-here," she asked. Surely the hall was big enough. Hell, the bathrooms in this house were big enough to dance in, but this situation in general had really caught her off guard. This was not supposed to be a date.
Constance held out her hand for Cassandra to take. "I’ll lead if you like," she said, and Cassandra couldn’t quite figure out if she was teasing or not. So, making a bold decision, Cassandra took Constance’s hand and they danced. The music only lasted through one song, but that particular song seemed to Cassandra to drag on for ages. Not that she minded dancing with Constance, it was fun actually. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d danced. Constance didn’t seem to question the music, or why it had spontaneously ceased.
"I better get on home," Constance said, letting go of her hold on Cassandra. "It’s already later than I had anticipated." As she spoke the two women began their walk to the door. Stopping just before the exit, Constance added, "Thank you for a marvelous evening." Placing a quick kiss on Cassandra's cheek, Constance then showed herself out. When the door closed, Cassandra raised her hand to her cheek, feeling where Constance’s lips had been. This evening certainly didn’t go as she thought, but perhaps it had actually taken a pleasant turn.
Wandering back to the kitchen to resume her cleanup, Cassandra couldn’t seem to get her mind off of Constance. She had never intended their dinner to be a date, she wasn’t sure she had seen Constance that way at all until tonight. They’d only met once, and even that had been only briefly. But there was something about tonight, maybe the wine, that had put her in a different light. Cassandra dried and put away the dishes on autopilot as she considered it. It had been a while since she’d even had a casual girlfriend. Maybe this could turn into something. She smiled to herself as she walked upstairs to bed. She’d give it some thought, but for now she needed some rest. She was going to have a big day tomorrow.
