evil shower kick casper like the football 🥺
The shower has been running for the better part of an hour, Ava realizes distantly. Bea had accidentally woken her whilst slipping out of bed, and Ava in her mid-deep sleep haze had caught a glimpse of the alarm clock before falling back into a restless drowse with the low thrum of the shower stirring to life.
It's now only five minutes before their alarm, rather than fifty-five, but the shower's still going. It's unlike Bea to take more than a five minute shower unless she's sluicing blood from her body. Ava's chest tightens and she slips off the mattress, digs the divinium dagger out from beneath Bea's pillow (and if it's presence there isn't even more worrying, well).
She knocks the door open wide with the side of her foot, only to find... Nothing. No blood, no gore, no nothing other than Beatrice's pyjamas draped over a towel rail, the tiny anchor print picked out bright in the slow light of dawn. The bathroom tile is cool and damp beneath her feet as she moves to the edge of the tub shower.
A whimper, low and throaty. Ava tugs the shower curtain back, finds Bea hunched on the floor, arms wrapped around herself, water pounding down over her head and back. She doesn't need to be under the water with Bea to feel the chill of the spray, to take in the blue tinge of Bea's hands.
"Bea," she whispers, stricken, before exploding into action. She discards the knife, strips off her own pyjamas, and climbs into the tub. Bea doesn't respond to her approach, her movement, not until Ava's seated herself behind her, pressed close to her back. Then Bea shivers, turns her face unconsciously towards Ava's collarbone, presses her nose to the warmth of the spot.
"I've got you," Ava mumbles, stretching awkwardly to find the tap, to crank it towards warmth, but it's already there. "The water heater doesn't, though, hey?"
Bea's huff of a laugh skates across Ava's neck when she shakes her head.
"Good thing I have the ways and means with which to fix that." She turns her focus inward, begs quietly for the halo to stir to life. A pang, a snap, a lightning-fast bolt of pain down her legs, and then-
Warmth floods the room, works into water droplets and ceramic and the air. Ava's shoulders relax just a hair and she puts her arms back around Bea's waist, willing the heat into her bones. "I've got you," she repeats, calm and steady with years of training. "I'm here. I've got you. I won't let go."

kodaline - brother because I'm an asshole
stop stop stop stop
one of the most compelling things about warrior nun is the fact that the narrative starts at the end. a girl - discarded, left on a cold table. a name and no cause of death.
another girl, perforated with light, carried into a holy place in the arms of her sisters
"if i was dying on my knees/ you would be the one to rescue me/ and if you were drowned at sea/ i'd give you my love so you could breathe"
the way that Shannon is positioned, not only here but in tmtl - as christ-like in this specific sense:
Shannon wrapping her body around a grenade but Shannon as a grenade. she is filled with shrapnel and she is shrapnel.
she tries very hard not to be; but she's in a tragedy. Mary comes along and there is love. Lilith and Beatrice come along and they need love. they need it so much more than they need to be protected from loss.
"and when you're in the trenches and you're under fire/ i will cover you"
that scene in tmtl when Shannon wraps her body around the grenade and Mary flings Beatrice clear of the blast, and Mary saying 'i forgot' and how that whole scene epitomises what the halo-bearer is. a reliquary; a body to carry the long onus of a holy war. to use our favourite term - a meatshield.
but i think it is also revealing of what the halo-bearer needs. what is painful and necessary for them to have, which is a person who forgets that she is not fully mortal. a person who takes her wounds seriously. who doesn't see her as a body for carrying sins.
cut to beatrice: "i'm your best friend, and i cannot watch you die."
from the mouth of a girl who knows that this is inevitable. i think when cam says the whole 'they're never yours. they never last' we all see this an an echo of Mary. words intended for her mouth, probably. words meaning THIS IS A TRAGEDY
struck by the fact that Shannon said to Lilith: 'you're ready'
but she did not say: 'i'm ready'
"and we'll be carrying each other/ until we say goodbye on our dying day"
#i will never ever be normal about tmtl#i have to set aside time each day to lie on the floor about it#fic of all time and absolute 100% cannon story of the brot4#fic: tmtl#pvp with em : D#casper song recs#birgittesilverbae

Battle X: Birth of the Alliance, the VR-enabled first-person shooter from the military simulation software veterans at Naviworks, sets its crosshairs on Oculus VR, HTC Vive, and Windows PC via Steam on September 10, 2018, with a PSVR version following in early 2019.
Battle X evolved from the combat simulation technology Naviworks designed to train several of the world’s toughest military units. The team demonstrates an unparalleled level of expertise in realistic, military engagements by way of authentic weapons, tactical gear, vehicles, and innovative dynamic systems that utilize full body movement for taking cover.
Starring everyone’s favorite Starship Trooper, Casper Van Dien, and written by Tomb Raider, Far Cry 2, Gears of War, and BioShock writer Susan O’Connor, Battle X’s single-player campaign chronicles the clandestine mission of an elite special forces unit. Only by defeating a private army of well-outfitted commandos and bio-hacked monstrosities can the team take down a rogue biotech scientist before she can enslave the world with her toxic pathogen.
The single-player campaign isn’t the only way to join the fray. Inspired by real-world military skirmishes, Battle X features eight-on-eight multiplayer “PvP,” a frenzied Couple Mode, where two soldiers can team up to battle wave after wave of mutant armies, and a comprehensive training mode featuring an enormous arsenal of real-world ordinance. Best of all, an 80-player Battle Royale mode comes out Q2 2019!
“Naviworks’ two decades of experience developing military simulation software is evident in this groundbreaking, first-person shooter,” said Steve Won, Naviworks CEO. “We look forward to bringing fully immersive combat to PC players and VR enthusiasts when Battle X releases this August.”
Battle X: Birth of the Alliance will officially launch on PC for Oculus VR, HTC Vive, and Windows PC via Steam on September 10, 2018, with a PSVR version following in early 2019. For more information on the game, please explore the official website.

Military Shooter Battle X: Birth of the Alliance to hit Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in April
Military simulation software specialist Naviworks has announced the upcoming arrival of its latest project, a first-person shooter (FPS) with optional virtual reality (VR) support for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive called Battle X: Birth of the Alliance.
The single-player campaign features a story from BioShock, Tomb Raider, Far Cry 2, and Gears of War writer Susan O’Connor, involving corporate espionage as an elite team of special forces soldiers head out on a mission to stop a rogue biotech scientist from enslaving the planet with a dangerous pathogen.
Featuring the voice of Casper Van Dien, best known as the lead of Starship Troopers, Battle X: Birth of the Alliance will utilise Naviworks’ extensive expertise to create a realistic military action experience with authentic weapons, gear, and vehicles as well as dynamic systems such as utilising full body movement when taking cover.
“Battle X: Birth of the Alliance is a groundbreaking first-person shooter that employs Naviworks’ nearly two decades of experience developing military simulation software,” said Steve Won, CEO, Naviworks in a statement. “We look forward to treating PC players and VR enthusiasts to an authentic military simulation when Battle X releases on Steam Early Access this April.”
In addition to the single-player campaign, Battle X: Birth of the Alliance will include a co-op mode where players can squad up and fight against a mutant army, a training mode for testing combat skills with an arsenal of real-world weaponry, and a competitive PvP multiplayer. There will be various eight-on-eight multiplayer game types on offer, drawing from real-world military situations, including “Explosive War,” a tactical objective-based competition where teams clash as one group lays explosives while the other races to disarm them before they detonate.
Battle X: Birth of the Alliance will debut via Steam Early Access on 30th April, 2018 for PC users as well as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive owners. Naviworks then plans on fully launching Battle X: Birth of the Alliance later this year. For the latest updates from Naviworks, keep reading VRFocus.

mary & bea - silence
Beatrice climbs the path above Cat's Cradle, her steps unsure on the uneven footing, dark clouds shrouding the setting sun, blurring the shadows that stretch long around her. She pushes off the path into the scrub, picks carefully through it with one hand outstretched in front of her. Her palm meets cool stone and she halts, reaches up over her head to grasp the lip of the outbuilding roof.
As she pulls herself up and swings her leg over the lip of the roof, one of the clay tiles scrapes at her shin through the soft fabric of her track pants. She bites her lip to stifle a groan and scrambling inelegantly the rest of the way onto the roof. She sits on the edge for a moment, one leg dangling, and pulls her knee to her chest, sneaks her hand up beneath the hem of her pant leg to feel at the inflamed patch of skin. Her fingers come away wet and she groans again, not bothering to smother it this time.
Beatrice tugs her pant leg back down, tucks the hem into the top of her boot, and sighs. She clambers the rest of the way up the slope of the roof and then stops, perched astride the peak, rear leg poised to swing over.
There's already a figure lying on the tile, wrapped as Beatrice is in a hoodie and track pants, a futile attempt to stave off the unnatural chill of the evening. They lean back on their elbows, tip their head back, and there's the tiniest glint of white against the shadowed planes of Mary's face when she gives Beatrice a small smile.
"Would you like to be alone?" She waits, braced hard against the rejection she fears is to come, but Mary shakes her head and pats the spot next to her.
"C'mere," she says, and Beatrice hates that she can recognise the sound of choked-down tears in the roughness of her voice.
Beatrice crests the roof peak and inches down to Mary's side, settling beside her and tucking her hands up inside the cuffs of her sweater. Mary's sweater, maybe, or Shannon's. She's long since stopped being able to tell the difference. She pulls her knees tight to her chest and wraps her arms around them, and beside her Mary pushes up off her back and mirrors her position.
"I miss them most at night." Mary rests her chin on her knees and sighs. "Something about it feeling too quiet, maybe. Not enough to distract myself with."
Beatrice makes a noise of agreement and hugs her knees tighter, resting her cheek on the shelf they form so she can just make out the slopes and valleys of Mary's profile against the near darkness. The silence of the Cradle has haunted her, too, and more than once she's found herself pacing the route from Shannon's door to Lilith's and back again, as if some small shred of her is holding out hope that they might swing open and let light back into her life. Let us help each other hold on, she wants to say, be my sound and I'll be yours, but even this shared moment feels almost more than she should ask of Mary, so instead she sits in the quiet of the night and watches Mary watch the stars.

The reek of fire and brimstone is faint but still noticeable when the door creaks open behind Beatrice. She tips her head back over the back of the couch, her sunglasses sliding up her forehead at the motion, and catches Lilith's eye. "You don't have to teleport into another room, you know," she comments, pulling her glasses back into place.
"It would be rude to do otherwise," she says, kicking off her shoes by the door, "and I know the smell can be a trigger for you. And I'd rather be safe than risk seeing something else I'll never be able to erase from my memory."
"Oh, the horrors of witnessing a private display of affection."
"The horrors of seeing Ava's breasts." Lilith flicks Beatrice's forehead gently as she heads towards the kitchen. She shifts something between her hands as she moves past, keeping it out of Beatrice's line of sight, but Beatrice is too tired to press her on it. If Lilith wants a secret, she can have it.
"She said she'd tell you where she bought her bra if you asked nicely."
"I don't want to know where she got her bra. I don't want to know about anything involving her undergarments." Lilith's flat tone echoes down the hall towards her. "Who organised your kitchen? Why aren't the mugs above the kettle?"
Beatrice doesn't dignify the questions with a response, though she'd been just as disgruntled with the choice initially. There's the quiet open and close of cupboard doors as Lilith attempts to hunt down the mugs. Finally, Beatrice rolls to her feet and pads down the hall to take pity on her. She slides open the drawer directly below the kettle, where the mugs lie within easy access of Ava even on the days when her mobility is most limited.
Lilith stares in bewilderment for a long moment, then her eyes flick up to take a measure of the cupboard height. She nods in easy understanding. "Am I to assume your tea supply is also in a drawer, then?"
Beatrice tugs open the next drawer wordlessly, sweeps a hand towards the rows of neatly labelled cans of looseleaf. "Do you need help finding the spoons as well?"
"I'm sure I can manage," Lilith replies dryly, rolling her eyes. "Stop hovering."
Beatrice retreats to the living room, resumes her sentinel position tucked into the corner of the couch. Time blurs around her in that way she hasn't yet managed to get a handle on. It's a perception thing, Jillian's neurologist has claimed, caused by the damage to her cerebellum. It's a nightmare, Beatrice has decided. She's spent her life in careful planning and observation, only for her brain to fail her at this most basic task of keeping time.
It's minutes before Lilith joins her; she can tell that much, at least, but the exact length of time evades her. In one hand she's carrying Ava's current favourite mug, the one with a drawing of a koala resting in a mug of tea as though it's a hot tub. In the other–
Beatrice's breath catches in her throat as she takes the lumpy mug from Lilith, as her thumb rubs across the ridges of clay that stand out where three words have been clumsily carved into its side. "Why?" she asks finally, as Lilith settles on the couch beside her and kicks her feet up on the coffee table.
"Mary started packing up her apartment today."
"She what?"
Lilith gives her a side-long look, her lips pursed. "Did she really not tell you?"
Beatrice shakes her head.
"She's decided to stop using me as her Uber to get to the new headquarters, so she's moving into the village. Just down the road from here, I believe."
"Oh." The pad of Beatrice's thumb catches on the chip in the lip of the mug. "And this?"
"She shattered the 'paint water' mug before I could prevent her from doing so, but I managed to rescue that one." Lilith shrugs like it's not a big deal in the slightest, but there's an edge of anticipation to her posture, as though she's waiting with bated breath for Beatrice's reaction.
"Thank you," she murmurs. "I appreciate it." Her fingertip slides into the slight depression on the base of the mug. A perfect fit, whorls and all. "How's Mary?"
"Complaining that I dropped her off in Munich or hunting down the nearest bar. It could go either way."
"Lilith."
"I made sure she had her shoes and wallet this time."
The dim lighting seems to burn her retinas, even through her tinted lenses. She flexes her fingers, extends them. "When does she need to be packed by?" she asks, following a long pause.
"I dropped Camila and Ava off before I got here, Beatrice. There's no need to push your limits by going to help."
Beatrice sighs. "Take me there," she says anyways, cradling the not paint water mug to her chest and holding her free hand out to Lilith.
She's not sure the squeeze-burn-tear of teleportation has ever felt worse than it does now, as she finds herself dropping onto one end of Mary's couch, Lilith arriving cool and composed and directly atop the cushion. Of course, she'd practised the shift hundreds of times while she'd been looking after the place, but Beatrice's headache is ramping up towards a fever pitch from the jolt she'd taken from the impact after arriving a solid four inches above the couch.
Between them, Ava barely twitches in surprise. It's a good thing, too, because Princess is settled in her lap and purring so loudly it's audible even through the ringing in Beatrice's ears. (Beatrice is almost certain Lilith hisses something that sounds startlingly similar to 'traitor'.) "Hey, Bea," she whispers, "I did say I'd catch you later. How're you doing?"
"Feline fine." Ava cocks a sceptical eyebrow. "Not any worse than I usually feel, anyways," she amends.
"Well, I'm glad you were up to joining us. In something other than photo form, anyways," she adds, gaze flicking to the mantelpiece over the fireplace.
Lilith takes a loud slurp of tea, drawing Ava's attention towards her instead. "What happened to boxing up the kitchen?"
Ava gestures helplessly at the cat. "What other choice did I have?"
Lilith rolls her eyes before taking another obnoxiously loud sip. "Princess," she say then, tacking on a pspsps for good measure. The cat stirs, rises to stand on Ava's thigh for a long moment before making up her mind and shifting over to Lilith. Lilith's shoulders loosen, and she holds up her fingers to let Princess sniff at them.
"There goes your problem. Go give Camila a hand."
"Aye, aye, captain." With a mocking salute, Ava bounces to her feet. She swoops in to give Beatrice a soft, fleeting kiss, then heads for the kitchen.
Lilith scratches Princess behind the ears. "She's going to have questions about this later," she says. Where the movement of her fingers is idle, the comment is anything but, heavy with an air of calculation.
"I've already told her most of it."
Lilith tilts her head in the direction of Beatrice's mug. "Not enough to fully explain the shards she had to clean up earlier."
"It's not my–"
"No one else is going to tell her, Beatrice, and she needs to know. Whether or not it's your place, it is your duty."

ah yes hello completely anonymous anon
//
Beatrice's mouth is dry when she finally breaks through from her drug-addled haze. The port has been removed from her elbow and the last remnants of morphling are seeping out of her veins and she is so unbearably thirsty.
She reaches blindly to the side, but a hand catches hers, lays it back on the mattress. Their skin is blisteringly hot– Or is hers cold? She's never quite felt like her body left that first arena behind it, as though the frost of the place had made a home deep in her bones. Even in the muggy air of this arena, even lying bracketed by Ava and Camila in sand heated just shy of scorching, she'd never quite felt warm again.
Then there's a straw at her lips and she pulls greedily at it. The water, however flat and metallic, is the best thing she's ever tasted. "Slowly, slowly," the person above her cautions. The voice is achingly familiar but she can't quite place it.
Water dribbles from the end of the straw as it is pulled away, and it feels boiling against the ever-frigid skin of her cheek and the droplets cling to her eyelashes long after the hovercraft has hauled the body into the sky, blood and snow spiralling in the wash of the rotors. Her cry sticks firmly in her throat, Mary's words always, always echoing in her head. Never let them see you falter. Especially not when her face is splattered with the blood of a victory given up to her as a willing oblation. Soon another craft will arrive and drag her away into the sky, but on her knees in the snow she knows, she knows, that a piece of her died here, cleaved through by Lilith's finely honed blade as easily as it had cut into the hollowed out space beneath her ribcage.
Lilith- The voice. The familiarity. Beatrice cracks her eyes open finally, finally, and her sight is still smeared, blurred by exposure to acid rain, but that the jawline is sharp as that blade had been. And maybe that single wound had killed them both, because how else could this be true? How else could the girl who'd weighed the pair of them and seen more worth in Beatrice, who'd acted on that calculation, be standing here at her bedside?
The words don't come, trapped deep in her chest, but her hand reaches out almost of its own accord, landing at Lilith's hip. Her fingers tug at the shirt, try to drag it free of the waistband of Lilith's fatigues, but she doesn't have the strength. Lilith understands, though, as she had during those last days in the arena, pressed back to back in a bivouac sack waiting for the cannon blast that would force an end to their tenuous alliance. She pulls the shirt free where Beatrice's hands fail her and drags the hem up to reveal her side.
Beatrice's fingertips brush across the centre of the scar before she even realises she's moved. It's in the same location as the wound had been, the margins ragged where the blade had been tugged to and fro as Lilith had convulsed. It feels real in a way that nothing truly has in months.
Lilith's palm is warm where it covers Beatrice's hand, pressed flat over ropy scar tissue. "It's real," Lilith says softly in answer to a question Beatrice can't remember voicing. "We're real. We're safe now. We're home."

Amber Run - Amen
oh, is there a heaven?/ you’d know now you’ve been
you know this show makes me crazy but one of the most interesting things it does is, simply, giving us Mary
this character who is bereaved from the very start, and we cannot possibly understand her grief. can’t even grasp at the edges of it.
& it’s so powerful because Shannon is a gaping wound ripped through the narrative, but we can’t see it. we can feel the blood dripping onto our backs, in our periphery. but we're stuck with this outline of her, a body ripped open not once, but twice. plundered for its treasure. only Mary goes and searches it for answers.
maybe out of habit, because it's where her answers have always been
and, with no body to keep her contained, Shannon is scattered everywhere.
in Beatrice, flinging herself at armed men in a kind of strained imitation of Shannon, because we learn bad habits too.
people sometimes say that Bea's whole 'trust your team' speech is ironic, coming from her, but i think she trusts her sisters. her issue in s1 is that she knows what she can trust them to do. she knows that Shannon would have wrapped her body around their bodies; that she would have carried any of them through fire.
she hates that and she resents it but, again, we learn bad habits most especially from the ones we love.
Lilith, who must at least be motivated somewhat by the thought of Shannon, perforated, brimming with blue light and telling her, with that sudden set of her jaw. that elusive steeliness to her voice, ‘you’re ready.’
Mary. i always think of her standing in Vincent’s office that night, and how incredibly kind she is to Ava. what we’ve seen her do before that - shoot a man in cold blood on a cliff, hold a knife against the tangle of veins in a wrist, telling a man how quickly it is possible to bleed out.
& then we see her in standing in the sunset at Cat's Cradle & she's something else. she's a container for all the grief we aren't ready to see.
Ava, who spends so much time running but can’t escape.
something about how you can’t run from a ghost when the ghost is inside you.
I can't help blaming you/ for leaving me here, what am I supposed to do?
thinking about how episode 1 takes its title from the Book of Psalms. episode 1, and the first thing we hear Mary say which is
'i need somewhere to put her down'
it always makes me think, oh Mary, you never will
this passage from psalms 23 & what it says about her,
Mary and the places we see her most often: on the docks, on the plateau where Ronda perches, on a bridge with Ava when Beatrice picks her up.
liminal spaces. between land and sea. between the earth and the sky. a bridge (between). what i think that says about where Mary is standing the whole time and where she ends up.
where she ends.
standing between her sisters and the world that wants to eat them.
#drawing little hearts on the grenade before lobbing it back at you#look i have a whole thesis to write about mary as a shield#(don't ask me about her force power in star wars au i'll cry)#but right now... yeah. mary standing at sunset. mary always on the edge of things.#how she's standing knee-deep in the river of death#mary at sunrise. mary at sunset. at the end of things. night into day and day into night#just!!! throwing glitter shuriken at em#pvp with em <3#casper song recs

bea is sleeping at last - eight
get rec'd gayboy 😔😔 i don't know what i expected
"i was just a kid who grew up strong enough/ to pick this armour up/ and suddenly it fit/ God"
newbea watching the one-two punch of Mary & Shannon. burning up at the sight of it, like an object slipping into a decaying orbit towards some immense object. towards love.
knowing that it would be hers, someday. this weight that Mary carries. Beatrice knows it like she knows the reach of her left hook; the anticipation of a blow. the inevitability of loss.
God. fitting. ill-fitting.
"i want to break these bones 'til they're better/ i want to break them right and feel alive/ you were wrong, you were wrong, you were wrong/ my healing needed more than time"
yeah, maybe she needed to fall off that motorbike. maybe she needed to break to come back together properly, wrapped in the love (hoodie) of those who love her.
"show me how to lay my sword down/ for long enough to let you through/ here i am, pry me open"
"here's a map, here's a shovel/ here's my achilles' heel/ i'm all in, palms out/ i'm at your mercy now and i'm ready to begin."
ava. a girl, a church. a girl, a roof overhead; a house you can't be thrown from. a house that won't collapse in on itself.
a girl like a star. a thing that burns and burns and dies, sudden, explosive. the aftermath of its death
and bea, standing as an occlusion in that bright cloud. alone again. 😔

shanmary: vance joy - fire and the flood
ghdksldksl you just picked up a song i've loved for years, dusted it off, and then threw it at me like a brick
"i been getting used to waking up with you/ i been getting used to waking up here/ anywhere i go there you are"
thinking of Mary walking into their her apartment, after.
feeling the ghost of a knife in her hand, the kick of her shotgun pressing into her palms. absence, as usual, replaced by the kiss of cold metal. scrubbing her hands in the sink, casting around for the tea towel because Shannon always carries it around slung over her shoulder like a line-chef, always ends up putting it down somewhere stupid.
an absence
how she goes casting about for it in the living room and sees the upset of the couch cushions, rearranged to fit a body they'll never house again. through the gap in the bedroom door a mess of sheets. realising how terribly a person exists in everything they touch.
how quickly they can go missing
"everything is fine/ when your hand's resting next to mine"
"you're the fire and the flood/ and i'll always feel you in my blood"
before there was always the line of duty, and they stood on one side of it. precariously and together.
there was a line, before. and the line was death and it was so thin, so easily traversed, that it became invisible. but now Mary is on the other side of the line of duty. standing alone in a space that once felt too large for anything smaller than both their bodies.
who would misplace stupid ordinary everyday objects? who would go and find them again?
saying: 'shan, you need to leave kitchen things in the kitchen.'
'but mary, i like it when you come looking for me'
