7th May 1840, death of German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, known for his paintings of the emotional contemplation of nature, alongside gothic ruins, and graveyards, barren trees, and silhouetted figures. Friedrich suffered depressive episodes throughout his life which fueled the symbology of his paintings. Towards the last twenty years of his life, as romanticism’s grip on the cultural imagination began to wane, he lived as a recluse, derided as being eccentric and melancholic; the"most solitary of the solitary". Spending days wandering alone in woods and fields during the days and the night. In June 1835, he suffered his first stroke, and gradually declined until his death on this day.
