case/lang/veirs - self-titled (review)

i'm just now realizing that this album cover looks very AI-generated, but since this album came out in 2016, it's one of those old-school image generators that can only make weird and sometimes horrifying amorphous shapes.

this is a one-off album by a supergroup made up of artists neko case, k. d. lang, and laura veirs. i haven't heard anything else from laura veirs, but i did pick up a neko case cd last summer and thought it was decent. k. d. lang's ingénue is a long-overdue listen that's currently at the top of my pile, so a review for that will probably be coming in a few weeks!

spotify tossed me track 10, "supermoon," a few years ago, and i've listened to "down I-5" a few times as well. the rest of this album was new to me. i actually paid full price for this one at a local record store, and i'm relieved to report that it was money well spent.

"atomic number" as an album opener is pretty great. it sets you up for the sound of the rest of the album, and it's a very catchy melody. the songs i added to my spotify likes were "honey and smoke," "song for judee," "delirium," "greens of june," and "georgia stars." delirium in particular became an earworm for me, even though i only really knew the chorus. using the word kaleidoscope as a verb is a lyrical detail i'm kind of obsessed with.

speaking of which, this album is full of really great lyrics. there are some places where it falls a little bit flat for me personally, like the first (and only) verse of "i want to be here," but i respect the hell out of the sentiment expressed, and i really like the chorus of that song, so i'm willing to forgive it.

the only thing preventing me from liking "best kept secret" as much as it deserves is my unshakeable distaste for anything involving california, particularly los angeles. that's a skill issue on my part and i'm happy to admit it. it's a pretty great little tune.

"georgia stars" is the album closer, and right away you can tell the difference in recording from the rest of the album. this one's rougher around the edges, but that only makes it more delightful. it's a gentle, affectionate little song that admittedly seemed anticlimactic on first listen, but by the third time around i was fully enamored with this track.

final thoughts: eat your heart out, boygenius. umm who said that. anyway this is a fantastic album start to finish and the whole world needs to know!!!

Credit due to k.d. lang for hearing how great the three of them would sound before getting it together. I think I love pretty much every moment on the record where they're weaving it together and there's a fair amount of that here.

the weekly #12

all i can see is the pollen fucking me up 

so much of this puts me back in 2021, a time i didn’t think, but could have figured, i would be nostalgic for in the future. and now future me is craving the mix of menthol juul pods and a saltwater pool. a busy street emptied out by 7:16 in the evening, the sun is orange, melting into red, pouring over the potholes and jumping the curb. may is getting close enough to plan out its days.

i’ve been drinking martinis after work, neglecting my journal, relying on zyrtec. waiting for time to loop itself back around, to bring me anything but this solitude that’s latched onto my weeknights.
