Matera gets under your skin. Each time you look at the same view you notice something different. It’s rich history was explained to us and the fact that there are now less then 20,000 full-time residents in the Sassi part of the city. It seems to stand just as a delight for tourists. Water has to be brought in, there aren’t major supermarkets and many services are lacking for residents. But tourists walk around in awe with their mouths agape just clawing their way through to the next scenic point or where they can angle for the best selfies. Basilicata was once among the poorest regions of Italy and Matera was the capital until this honor was taken away from them and given to Potenza. A city lacking in the charm and pop-up book majesty of Matera and her Sassi. A well-deserved UNESCO heritage site immortalized by many a film such as The Last Temptation of Christ the Mel Gibson blockbuster. If you visit it’s a place you’ll never forget. I’m so grateful I was brought here. I’ve wanted to come for many years.
