Be My Forever - Laurent Brossoit
Pairing: Laurent Brossoit x Fem!Reader
Word count: 3k
Warnings: none, just fluff
A/N: lightly inspired by the song Ask You Tonight by Big Time Rush, linked here to give you the vibes <3
I'm gonna tell you tonight Everything you wanna hear And for the rest of my life Plus like a million more years You're the only one I wanna love The only one, this I promise ya If that sounds alright I might just ask you tonight
The way you had met Laurent was always one of those things that made you think. Both of you had just happened to be in the right place at the right time. You were a sports journalist, traveling wherever your station sent you at any given moment. But then your flight had been delayed and then canceled. Your only options of getting to where you needed to go were to sleep on the airport floor or rent a car and drive through the middle of nowhere central California, to Bakersfield. Sometimes you loved covering minor leagues, but at times like this, getting to the middle of nowhere was a huge pain in the ass.
It was late, almost midnight, and you were exhausted. Then Laurent appeared, apparently also from the flight that got canceled. He was coming back from a holiday break with his family during All-Star weekend, and needed to get back to his team. There was one car left at that hour that was ready to go, and he told you to throw your things in the trunk. He didn’t leave room for argument, and you had no idea if you were getting into a car with a serial killer never to be heard from again. Luckily he wasn’t, and that car ride was the best choice you could have ever made.
He liked to say that the universe was looking out for the two of you, putting you where you needed to be. Ever since then, you went through everything together. Sometimes your career took you away for long periods of time, and every year you seemed to be living somewhere different. You had decided early on that the two of you were in it for the long haul, you were there for all of the ups and downs that the sports world decided to throw at you. At the end of this last season, his one year contract had expired and he signed with another team. Which meant you’d be packing up all of your belongings and moving, again.
After ten years together, you knew the drill by now. You knew how to pack your things and in what order, even having a mover on speed dial. A lot of teams gave you assistance with that kind of thing if they could, and you’d always take it. The off season at least gave you a bit of time to rest, and gave you the opportunity to celebrate your ten year anniversary. You didn’t want to get your hopes up, hoping maybe that this would be the year a ring would finally appear on your finger. You always said the ring didn’t matter, because at the end of the day you loved each other and that was all that mattered. That’s what you told yourself anyway, but that didn’t stop everyone and their mom from asking when the two of you were going to get engaged or get married or have a baby. Soon, you’d always say, soon. It had been just the two of you for so long, you almost didn’t know how to adjust to something different.
Half of your apartment was in boxes, getting ready for the move to Chicago. But you’d saved a couple of choice outfits for this night, as he had been dropping some not so subtle hints of having big plans for it. Winnipeg had become kind of home, after being welcomed back to the team with open arms. It was a return to some kind of stability, and you would miss looking out the city lights of Downtown Winnipeg whenever you wanted.
“Are you almost ready to go love?” You heard Laurent yell from the living room area.
“Just a second babe!” You yelled back. You had on your favorite outfit, the one you wore that made him have googly eyes like a teen boy in a cartoon movie. The look that told you he couldn’t wait to rip it off of you later. Complete with the necklace he had gotten you on your first anniversary, and a few other pieces you had that you loved, you were just about ready to go.
The way time stops when I'm with you You fix me up like I'm brand-new Now I'm no longer waiting on forever love
“I’m ready!” You yelled, hearing him turn off the tv and jump off the couch.
Walking out into the living room you saw him turn around and bring his hand up to cover his jaw that was most likely hanging wide open. He studies you, walking towards you slowly. He never failed to make you feel like the most beautiful person in the world.
“You look stunning, as always. There are not enough words in the English language to describe the way you look right now, love.”
“Flattery will only get you so far, sir. Are you going to tell me where you’re taking us?” He took your hand, grabbing his keys off the counter, and not even letting go of your hand so you could walk through the door.
“Nope.”
“Please?” You had a love hate relationship with surprises, and you usually had some idea of what he was planning but not this time. The man was bad at keeping secrets from you, knowing each other inside and out.
“You can try gorgeous, but you will not succeed in getting me to crack.” You watched him pat his pockets before getting on the elevator, he was making sure he didn’t forget something.
“UGH. Fine. You aren’t going to make me wear a blind fold in the car again are you?” He had blind folded you almost every year for a surprise. You hated not having any control over the situation, but he sensed that and took your hand again. Before you stepped into the underground parking garage, he stopped and pulled the eye mask out of his pants pocket.
“Before the car this time? I’m gonna trip and fall!” You even had heels on, which was a rarity, but also made you a higher risk for falling flat on your face.
“I’m not going to let that happen I promise. I’m going to lead you right to the car, and I’ll even buckle your seatbelt for you okay? Safety first pookie.” You tried not to laugh, he was trying to distract you.
“Don’t you pookie me, you’re lucky I love you.”
“I love you too, now please just trust me!” You nodded, letting him place the eye mask on you. You could feel the anxiety boiling in you as he led you to the car. He turned on your couples playlist, the one you started all those years ago when you first started dating. You had just been adding to it over the years, and it was the default on each anniversary or special occasion. The car ride was quiet, only adding to the anticipation you were feeling. You couldn’t sense a direction or any kind of pattern with his driving.
“We’re almost there, just a few more minutes.” He squeezed your hand before you heard him turn on his turn signal.
A few minutes later you felt him put the car into park. Getting out himself, he came around to open your door for you. He helped unbuckle your seatbelt, and guided you out. Once you were standing upright again, he kissed both of your cheeks.
“Are you ready?”
“Yes, the anticipation is killing me!”
“I’m going to take off the blindfold now, but close your eyes at first and only open them once I tell you okay?” You nodded, and felt him take it off. You took a deep breath, steadying yourself.
“Okay, you can open them now. Happy anniversary my dear.” Once you opened your eyes you couldn’t help but gasp at the scene before you. This year was different.
There was a path lined with candles, illuminating your way inside a large building you recognized as the Manitoba Museum Planetarium. Every couple feet there were dozens of your favorite flowers lining the path as well, taking your breath away. You used to come here when he was first traded to Winnipeg, you’d come together when you had the time and would sit in the planetarium for hours looking at the stars. You used to make up names for them even though you knew they already had them, but it was one of your favorite things that you used to do together. Laurent offers his arm to you and you take it, allowing him to lead you down the path and inside the building.
Once inside, you realized there was no one else in the room besides the two of you and one museum employee. There were more candles inside, wickless thank god or else you would have slapped his arm a little, but it still made the scene beautiful. In the middle of the room there was an arrangement of blankets, pillows, a bucket filled with one of your favorite champagnes, and what looked to be a full take-out spread from your favorite local restaurant.
“Laurent.. You didn’t..Are we the only one’s here?” It wasn’t often that you were rendered speechless, but somehow this man still managed to surprise you every now and then.
“I might have rented out the whole place for the night, just the two of us. I wanted tonight to be special.”
“I know, ten years is a long time.” You smiled.
“And no one is going to pop out from the shadows and yell surprise?” You had to ask.
“No, you’ll see.” He pointed toward the beautiful set up on the floor, and gestured to lead you there. You couldn’t stop looking at him, reminding yourself of the amazing life you created together. You knew how lucky you were, you would never take a single thing you had for granted, especially Laurent. Your mom used to say there was someone out there for everyone, and once you found them you should never let go. You tried taking in more of your surroundings, taking in the moment and feeling grateful to be where you were standing.
Once you sat down, the planetarium lit up above you. You were looking at the night sky in all of its beauty, taking the scene before you in. The museum employee had now disappeared, leaving just the two of you alone. Laurent poured two glasses of champagne and handed one to you. Your eyes returned to Laurent, he was looking at you like you were the one holding up the moon you now saw in the sky.
“A toast, to us. Thank you for loving me the way that you do. I am forever thankful for the bad weather that one night ten years ago.” The sound of your glasses clinking together rang out in the room. He set down his glass, and kissed you.
“What was that for?” You asked. “I just wanted one last kiss before I do this.”
“Laurent, what are you talking about?” This couldn’t be it. Was this it? You’d never tell anyone, but you had dreamed of this moment your whole life. He brought his hand up to his breast pocket, pulling out a little box. You knew exactly what that box had inside it.
I'm gonna tell you tonight Everything you wanna hear And for the rest of my life Plus like a million more years You'rе the only one I wanna love Thе only one, this I promise you If that sounds alright I might just ask you tonight
He shifted his position to that of being on one knee. In shock you brought your hands up to cover your mouth, somehow not ready for the moment you’d thought about for so long.
“Laurent I-” He hadn’t even said anything yet and you couldn’t seem to find any words now.
“My love. I knew the moment that I saw you in that airport ten years ago that you were the one for me. It feels like just yesterday, two strangers caught in a whirlwind of delayed flights and unexpected detours. But that was exactly where we were supposed to be. Little did I know that this chance encounter would lead me to my forever home—you. Everything was going wrong that day, until I met you.”
You could feel tears creeping into your eyes, hearing how much he loves you.
“Through every move, every game, and every new city, you have been my anchor and my rock. I know this life isn’t easy, and it isn’t always the one you wanted. You are my safe space, my unwavering support, and the person I can always count on. Your laughter and warmth light up even the coldest days, and I can honestly say that you make every place we go feel like home. You are everything I never knew I needed, and I can’t imagine my life without you in it.”
He brought up the box and opened it, revealing the ring he had been hiding all along. It was everything you had ever imagined it to be and more. You could tell he had been taking notes over the years, and had added in elements you mentioned so long ago.
“I know I’ve waited way too long to do this, and I will regret it for the rest of my days for not asking you the day we met but I didn’t want you to think I was some crazy person. You inspire me to get out of bed each morning, to accomplish amazing things for you, and the reason I’ll never stop working to be a better person. Every time I look up into the stands and see you, I know you’re there just for me. I have seen your kindness and your strength and the way that you share those qualities with others. I have seen the best and worst parts of you, and I understand with everything I am that you are the most incredible person I have ever known or will know. I promise to be everything you need me to be, I promise to be the home you can always count on. I can’t wait to see what we do in the future. I could kneel here for hours and tell you how much I love you over and over again, but I don’t think it would ever be enough so I’ll ask you this; Would you please do me the great honor of marrying me and making me the happiest man in the world?”
He takes the ring out of the box and holds it up for you to see. Finally the shock begins to wear off, the weight of his heartfelt words sinking in. You knew he loved you but had never fully grasped how much until now.
“YES! Yes!” You couldn’t find any other words to say, but it was enough. He slipped the ring on your finger, admiring his work and you at the same time.
“Now get up here and kiss me you big goon.” You told him.
“My love, goalies are not known for their stellar knees later in life so you might need to help me a little…!” A laugh escaped your lips just a little, causing him to laugh as well. Instead of trying to get up, he switches positions and brings you down into his lap. Placing his hands on either side of your head, he kisses you the way that you had been hoping for all evening. You didn’t want to move from that spot for a very long time, wanting to freeze this exact moment in time for as long as possible.
“How long can we stay here?” You asked, the museum employee did have to go home at some point in time.
“As long as you want. It’s ours for the next several hours, and we are completely alone until I make a call for them to close up…” He raised his eyebrows at you, attempting to drop a hint.
“Sir, we are NOT doing that here!” You tried not to let him see that you were smiling.
“Why not?” His tone tried to sound innocent but it wasn’t working well.
“Because then all of this food is going to get cold, and that would be a crime wouldn’t it?” You definitely were not going to let your favorite food go to waste. He could take you home later and have his way with you, but you were going to torture him for just a little while longer.
“A crime against who?” He asks as he helps you start to unpackage the food.
“Me and my stomach that’s who.” You couldn’t think of a better evening, eating amazing food and being cuddled up next to your favorite person.
“Now we couldn’t have that now could we?”
“Absolutely not. But the quicker you eat, the faster you can take me home and have your way with me…” His eyes lit up at that moment, “But I think I’m going to take my time you know? You made me wait ten years for this..” A groan escaped from him but he was still smiling.
“I know I’ve said it a lot tonight, but I love you. I love you so much.” Laurent rests his forehead against yours as if you could feel everything he was feeling in that moment. There was something about how his actions told you of his love, like getting closer to you was the only way that he could accurately give all of himself to you. He was telling you without telling you, that you were the one. The two of you were in it for the long haul, wherever life would take you.
“I love you too. Happy anniversary my love.”

Here Now
[3715 words, 20 minutes]
1 January 2017 Winnipeg, Canada
The father walks the long way to the house that is not his own. He could’ve told the taxi to drop him at the door. Instead, he stops it at an intersection and it drives on without him.
In the 4am winter night, the father has no reason to fear anyone seeing him. The streets of this dingy neighbourhood are empty except for wet, brown snow that collects the deep footprints of strangers. The father has no reason to fear anyone robbing him. His pockets are light. They only hold an empty wallet, an expired driver’s licence, and a dead cell phone. And yet, the absence of life leaves room for imaginary danger. The father’s blue eyes stare down pockets of darkness, his tense legs ever ready to sprint.
He avoids the straight path that leads to his destination. Instead, he circles the housing block like a frantic bird, riding his own wings of instinct governed by survival, anxiety, and death. His metronome heart sets his quick pace, and when he makes the final turn that brings his destination into view, his heart drums to the swell of fear and excitement.
His eyes now squint in the dying light of sparse streetlamps, and he whispers to himself house numbers he passes in the language of a stranger. He stops at a small house. Its front has a door, a window with blinds, and a broken bulb with frozen cobwebs. Before the door is a wooden deck with stairs. Rusted nails barely hold the planks in place.
He walks up the stairs to the door and raises a fist to knock.
Fuck. No one’s going to be awake. God, I’m a fool. Got too excited—
Movement, through the crack beneath the door. It sparks the warm memory of the padded pit-pat of small, socked feet on hardwood floor. The father trembles. He doesn’t know if it’s from cold, excitement, or fear. He knocks before he decides.
The pit-pats are real now. He can hear them: larger, heavier, but undoubtedly theirs. The window blinds fold to form a peephole. The lock clicks, the door swings open, and the father stares down at an almost mirror image of himself. The same messy black hair, the same weary eyes: his eldest child, better than him in every way.
They speak in the language of family. “Daa?”
The eldest child throws themselves at their father, nearly knocking him off the stairs. He can’t help but laugh as he picks them off the snow, warmth bubbling out of him into his tight embrace. His child is taller and stronger now — an adult by all definitions. But to him, as they bury their face into their father’s chest, they’re still so small, so light, so easy to tear away from him like before.
—
It has been a year since the siblings have lived in this house together. The eldest, Hrodwyn, left Auntie Elmira’s care at the orphanage when they turned eighteen. They had saved up enough from their two jobs, and the two jobs continued to be enough for rent. Their two siblings followed them: their sixteen-year-old brother Merethel who always kept his long, black hair swept over his right eye, and their twelve-year-old sister Hygd who always kept a smile on her face. Auntie Elmira let them leave. She knew they were inseparable, and their father was relieved that they were.
It has been ten years since their father was wrongly sent to prison. On the red-blue night of his arrest at their doorstep, Hygd was three and wailing, Merethel was seven and scared, and Hrodwyn was ten and bold. Hrodwyn heard the officers yell “Gavrill Vorobyev” over and over, watched them slam their pleading father against a car, and felt their siblings shatter in their arms. As the officers drove their father away, Hrodwyn knew it was now their responsibility to protect their family. They knew it was now their responsibility to fix all the broken pieces their father left behind, even if it meant pricking their own fingers.
In the mornings following their father Gavrill’s return, Hrodwyn made sure every piece of the siblings’ lives were meticulously organised like glass figurines on display. Nervously, they presented their father their handiwork within the cabinet of cutleries and Tupperwares, the closet of detergent and cleaning supplies, the fridge door of schedules and chores. All this order balanced on a rickety shelf Hrodwyn had built; all this order came crashing down in days to make room for Gavrill.
At first, Gavrill did not see this as a problem. He saw no problem at all — he was finally free, and his senses flared with life. He relished the touch of warm skin instead of thin paper, savoured the sound of rich voices instead of broken static. And with every chip and crack he felt between him and his children, an echo of his wife’s voice would comfort him:
—You’re here now, she would say, and that’s all that matters.
But it did not take long for reality to slip through the cracks of his ignorance. That was what he got for dancing around “How did you get out of prison?” — that was how he began stepping on his children’s broken pieces.
—
4 February 2017
“Daa, daa.”
Gavrill jolts awake on the couch. Foreign babble plays to colourful cartoon ponies running across the television screen.
“Ah, sorry daa,” Hrodwyn whispers in the language of family, Ingush — Gavrill ensured Auntie Elmira taught them when he was in prison. “Do you want lunch? I was going to heat up the stew you brought home last night.”
Gavrill rubs his eyes. Yesterday, his new job called him to an orientation in Rio de Janeiro. He bought the stew before he flew back. “Sounds good. We should finish that soon. It smelled great! I think you will all like it.”
Hrodwyn smiles politely. “I’m sure we will.”
Gavrill stands up. He sees Hygd at the foot of the couch, knees tucked to her chest as she watches the cartoon. He looks around for Merethel and doesn’t find him — he’s probably studying in Gavrill’s bedroom, the only other room with a table. Hrodwyn is already in front of the fridge: a Tetris map of new groceries, wilting vegetables, and takeout boxes. They move the stew containers from the fridge to the microwave, then drift from the kitchen to Gavrill’s bedroom. A minute later, they return with Merethel grumbling behind them.
The microwave beeps. Gavrill opens it, but Hrodwyn beats him in removing the containers, slipping past him with an “it’s okay”. They place the containers on the bar table that divides the kitchen and the living room. Merethel catches a sniff of it and speaks in English.
“Wow, this smells good,” he dips his pinky into the side to taste it. “And it’s not spoiled!”
“Of course not,” Gavrill responds in Ingush. He brings one container to Hygd and sits next to her. “I wouldn’t feed you spoiled food.”
Merethel raises an eyebrow.. He takes a spoon from the drawer and the container of stew.
“Hey,” Hrodwyn says in Ingush. They sit across Gavrill. “Don’t go back to daa's room. Eat here.”
“What? Why?”
“Because you’re always there,” Hygd says, also in English.
Merethel curls his lip. “And?”
“Hey, no English,” Hrodwyn reminds their siblings, who comply.
Hygd tries drinking the stew straight from the container and burns her tongue. “daa's been asking you to eat together with us, like, every day. Don’t you hear him?”
“Well, I’m sorry, but are you studying for a scholarship?” Merethel sets his stew down with a huff and sits across her. “I thought so.”
“Hey, come on,” Gavrill says. “Be nice to your sister. Can you get a spoon for her, please?”
“She can get it herself.”
Hygd frowns. “But you’re closer! They’re on your side!”
“Come on,” Gavrill sighs.
Merethel grumbles. “Why do you want me to give her a spoon so bad—OW!”
Hygd had kicked him underneath the bar table. He retorts by trying to kick her back, but she tucks her legs out of reach. Merethel kicks her chair instead. It screeches against the floor. Hygd grins at her fuming brother. He growls and tries again.
“Hey-hey! Enough!” Gavrill yells then bites his tongue. Shit, too harsh? He lightens up. "Don’t be like that. Just pass her a spoon, please. And one for myself as well."
The two ignore him and continue scrabbling. With a sigh, Hrodwyn clears their throat and glares. Only then do their siblings stop. A second glare makes Merethel pass a spoon to his father and sister. A third isn’t needed to make Hygd smile sweetly and thank him.
Fragile silence falls on the table. Gavrill tries to tread across it carefully towards his children.
“Well, this is nice. Um,” he smiles and looks at Hrodwyn. “I’m glad you got off your shifts today. I think this is the first time we’ve had lunch together!”
“Yeah! It took, like, a month,” Hygd tilts her head to Gavrill. “And you still haven’t told us what your new job is!”
Merethel scoffs. “Or what kind of company can hire a man out of jail.”
“Hey, I—” Gavrill opens his hands. “Those questions can wait until later. Why don’t you guys tell me about school?”
“Ugh, it’s boring stuff compared to what you’re doing! I think,” Hygd mixes her stew. “Why don’t you wanna tell us?”
“Yeah, daa,” Merethel says. “Why don’t you? You’ve had your orientation. You should know enough about your job to tell us about it now, right?”
“How was Rio? Did you see any birds?” Hygd swings her feet.
“It was very nice,” Gavrill smiles at her and folds his arms. “Very hot. But uh, the food was good! And there were little birds on the street. Oh! I forgot I got the three of you keychains—”
A loud slam and screech interrupts the conversation. Merethel had pushed his chair back. He stands up. “I’m going to my room.”
Hrodwyn tugs his sleeve. “Hey—”
“Don’t touch me,” he spits in English and yanks his arm away. “If he doesn't even want to talk about something normal like a job, what the hell else can we talk about?”
“Okay, okay, I’ll talk about it!” Gavrill shocks himself with his tone. He offsets it with a smile. “It’s fine. It’s not a big deal. Come, sit, sit. You want to know what kind of company got me home, right?”
He gestures towards the empty chair. Merethel narrows his eyes and remains standing. The two other siblings also look at Gavrill in anticipation. His open mouth runs dry.
Helvetia Ltd. A private military contractor working for an R&D consultation firm funded by the G20. A company of hounds with global reach and infinite pay. A company that operates in the dark, hidden between the lines of conspiracy theories.
“A big company,” Gavrill finally decides. “Powerful, obviously, and they know I’m innocent, so they got me out. In exchange, I get a job right out of prison. And I get to be with all of you again!”
Merethel switches to Ingush, making sure his father understands him. “Very descriptive, daa.”
He storms off to the siblings’ shared bedroom. Hrodwyn reaches for him. Gavrill sighs and waves for them to stop. The bedroom door slams shut, and the two remaining siblings are left to contemplate their father’s response. They swallow it with lunch.
Soon, Hygd’s eyes creep to Merethel’s half-eaten stew, then to the hallway he vanished off to. She slides off her seat and picks up his stew with both hands.
“He still needs to eat.”
Her small feet shuffle down the hallway. Once she disappears around the corner, Gavrill deflates, burying his head in his hands. Hrodwyn stirs their stew.
“Are you not going to tell them anything?
Gavrill sighs as he picks himself back up. “I’m not going to tell any of you anything you don’t need to know.”
Hrodwyn leans towards him. “Daa, you can tell me. I’m an adult now. I can take it.”
He looks at his child, the bags beneath their eyes, and shakes his head. “It’s fine, really. It’s a good job with good pay. Contract-based, so I’ll be home most days. Don’t worry about it.”
Hrodwyn’s voice is quiet, fraught. “Then at least tell me you know who framed you. Were they caught?”
“No. And I don’t know who or where they are.”
“What? Then how does the company know you’re innocent? Did they reopen the case?”
“I don’t know.”
Gavrill continues eating his stew with downcast eyes. Hrodwyn stares at him. “Why aren’t you worried? That guy is still out there. What if you get framed again?”
“I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
“How do you know for sure?”
“It’s fine. Trust me.”
“Did the company tell you something?”
Gavrill closes his eyes and sighs. “Look. When I got arrested, the court said that they were going to lock me up until they found the real culprit. Ten years passed. No one figured it out. They’ve all moved on from that and I’ve moved on from that, too. I’m just glad I got out in the first place. That’s all.”
Hrodwyn is quiet for some time. “Will you tell me why you got hired? Is it because of something you did in Ingushetia?”
Gavrill stops eating. “What makes you think that?”
“I remember how you fought against Russians. I remember how mama died. It’s why we moved here, isn’t it? And now you have this strange job you don’t want to tell us about—”
A rap on the door interrupts them. Gavrill, relieved, quickly leaves the table. He peeks through the blinds, frowns, and cracks the door open. Wind cuts into his face. He looks down. A large package sits atop fresh snow. Its only identification is a tag taped onto it: “HROTHGAR”. The name his wife once gave him. The name he now gave Helvetia. Footprints trail away from the package to the road where it meets fresh tire tracks. No vehicle is in sight.
He scowls. He grabs the package, dusts snow off, slams the door shut, and locks it. Before Hrodwyn can see it, he rips off the tag and shreds it, pocketing the strips.
“Do you need help with it?” Hrodwyn tilts their head. “It looks big.”
“No, it’s fine. I think it’s from work. Do you have a cutter?”
Hrodwyn hands him a pair of scissors. He carries the package and the scissors into his bedroom and closes the door. Large luggages and old boxes are spread across the floor. Their contents, the salvaged pieces of a happier life once lived, have yet to be organised into wardrobes, sorted into shelves, or fitted into photo frames. Gavrill has no time or energy to. They’re not his children’s — they aren’t as important.
Gavrill pushes the luggages and boxes aside with his foot. He drops the package in the space he made. He sits on the floor, raises his hand, and plunges the scissors into cardboard.
—
The package contains Gavrill’s uniform: a three-piece navy suit with a golden tie and a pair of black oxfords, and a durable coat designed for urban environments. The suit feels too expensive to bend his arms in. He tries wearing it without creasing the fabric. It takes a long time — long enough for his two children to knock on his door: Hrodwyn who stared in confusion, and Hygd who brimmed in awe.
By then, Gavrill still had not worn the entire uniform — he had forgotten how to tie a tie. He could count the number of times he has done it in his life on his hands, with all but one count being for court hearings. So Hygd gets to work. She pulls her father out into the living room and opens a YouTube tutorial. Time passes. Hrodwyn’s and Hygd’s fussing grows louder without them coming any closer to their goal. Their commotion annoys Merethel enough for him to bring out his own tie for a snarky demonstration. Soon, all three siblings end up circling their father for final touches: fitting the golden tie, tightening the vest, and smoothening the suit as Gavrill stands stiff like a Christmas tree.
When they’ve finished, Hygd steps back to look at her father like a panel judge. She watches Hrodwyn attach the final piece: Helvetia’ lapel pin bearing a cross in a shield. Hrodwyn steps back to join their sister. Gavrill remains frozen in place.
“I feel so embarrassed.”
“Why?” Hygd grins. “You look cool!”
“Do I?” he looks at his other two children with an uncertain but small smile. My daughter called me cool.
"You look… expensive. Very expensive," Hrodwyn gazes at the suit's double vents, the trousers cut to the curve of Gavrill’s legs, and the hand-stitched buttons. "How much did this cost, daa?"
"More than the suit I rented for my own wedding, that's for sure,” he grumbles. In a clearer tone, "I don't know. The company covered it. But what looks wrong?"
"You don't look comfortable in it. It shows.”
"When was the last time you combed your hair?” Merethel adds. “Or got a haircut?"
Gavrill grimaces. "I didn’t need to touch a comb or cut my hair back there. I only trimmed it now and then. Is it that bad?”
Merethel is quick. “Yes.”
Hygd punches his arm.
“It’s not that bad,” Hrodwyn taps their chin, “but if you did something to your hair, you can look more professional.”
"Oh! Wait, daa, sit, sit," Hygd drags her father to the couch and forces him to sit. She crawls behind him, kneels, and gently combs through his lightly greying hair with her fingers. A spare yellow hair tie comes off her wrist. She bunches his hair together. "Too tight?"
He shakes his head. "What are you doing?"
"Tying a bun," she does so expertly with a quick twist, then jumps off the couch to look at him. She grins at the team effort. “Daa! You look like a thousand bucks! Here, here.”
She grabs her father’s hand, which squeezes hers in return, and leads him into the siblings’ bedroom. Hrodwyn and Merethel follow behind. She turns on the lights and pulls him in front of the chipped mirror mounted on the wardrobe door. “What do you think, daa?”
Gavrill stares at his reflection. His smile dissolves. He doesn’t recognise himself. He only recognises Agent Hrothgar, Helvetia’s newly hired murderer, wrapped in a gallant lie of navy blue as he stands in the bedroom of children.
Hygd smiles brightly. “So..?”
Hrodwyn notices his stare. “What’s wrong, daa?”
If he doesn’t recognise himself, will his children recognise him? After a job that hails bullets and shrapnels at his body and his mind, after he returns too splintered to shield them from the truth, will they recognise him as their father? He can try to convince them. He can try to be the best father he can be to erase the decade when he wasn’t. He can try to pretend that he’ll never leave them again, that he’ll always be there for them, that he’ll cut himself wrapping his splinters to hold them tight and never let them shatter into pieces again—
—Our children are smart. You can only do so much to protect them, Gav. How would you rather them find out? Her smile would sadden. With a voice full of conviction, she would say: —Don’t you have enough regrets?
Gavrill looks away from his reflection. His eyes drift to his children.
“You need to know about my job. Can we talk?”
Gavrill sits on Merethel’s bed, next to Hrodwyn’s and Hygd’s bunk bed. He pats his side. The siblings, surprised by his directness, move to sit next to him.
He twiddles his thumbs. "This job I have, it's... dangerous. The company is even more dangerous. They have a lot of power, a lot of money,” he tugs at his three-piece suit. “They were able to pay my bail and hire me out of, well, you know, in exchange for my… skills. And I—” he hesitates, “I can’t leave unless…"
“You die,” Hrodwyn states.
Gavrill pauses, then nods. Their delivery stings.
The room falls silent. Hygd curls into a ball. Merethel tries masking his nerves.
"Ah, well, it's like, uh, working for the military then, right? There's always a high chance of death, and it's a risk some people with families take."
Gavrill’s voice is soft, defeated. "I'm sorry."
“It’s fine. It’s… whatever,” Merethel looks away. “It’s not like you’ve never been gone before.”
Gavrill winces and opens his mouth. Hrodwyn interrupts him. “Don’t apologise. You had no choice and you did what you had to do. They were never going to reopen your case. There will never be another option for you besides this one.”
Gavrill hates how he sees himself in his child’s placid eyes.
"What should we know about the job?” Hrodwyn continues. “What do we have to do?"
"I'll be here until the company calls me. Whatever they tell me to do, no matter how dangerous, I must follow. The company also has enemies. Keep the blinds closed, don’t let strangers in, never enter the house when someone’s watching, and always tell each other where you are, hmm?" he raises his phone. "If something’s wrong, call me or Auntie. Don't let anyone in the house. You still have Auntie’s phone number, yes?"
The children nod.
“Good. And lastly,” he voice softens and he wraps his arms around his children, "don't worry about me. I will always do my best to come home to you. I may get hurt, but I will always come home. Okay? My fight is to go back home to you, no matter what."
He pulls them in closer. The cracks between them remain but in this moment, the family is whole.
"I am here now. And I swear by my last dying breath, I will never, ever, let anything take us apart again."
Hygd picks her head up from her tucked knees. “Promise?”
Gavrill hooks his pinky with all his children’s and smiles. He cuts himself with his words and hopes it never heals.
“I promise.”

what is your personal favorite part about our province
@definitelymanitoba
Whew. What do I like the most about Manitoba? Maybe the feeling of community! Maybe the land! Maybe the vibe?
I lived in the south during my youth! (God I'm Old, that feels weird to say) Rural, not in Winnipeg. I didn't really appreciate how beautiful and safe that community was until I moved North as an adult. I really took it for granted and wanted to move out of Manitoba.
(This inukshuk is in Churchill and was made by a cooky old guy I'm friends with on FB. His posts are so funny.)
But my family is from Churchill, and I wanted to both experience it and get like. A job. Lmao. A career.
So I did that but also I discovered I really love this place. I love the trees and the way things look and feel. I love the ravens who beg for food. I love that the people here really try to help each other. Because there are people here who aren't interested in making things better for anyone, but there's way more people here, vocal people who organize and are welcoming, that do.
I'm very happy to have Wab Kinew as our Premier! I love how easy it is to get trans healthcare here. I don't feel afraid rn that my rights are in jeopardy. And I helped us get there by voting and doing community stuff to make things safer. Of course, there are always nay sayers, but the majority is super accepting. And willing to fight for it!
It's hard to explain the vibe of Manitoba to people who have never been here. Sometimes, it feels pretty desolate. But other times, if you're in the right place, with the right people, there's nowhere else you'd rather be.
There's a song on The Tragically Hip's album Phantom Power about a girl and it's a pretty good song but I think it also suits our vibe, don't you think?
Thompson Girl, I'm stranded at the Unique Motel
Thompson Girl, winter fighter's shot on the car as well
Looks like Christmas at 55 degrees
This latitude weakens my knees, Thompson Girl
Grunt work somewhere between dream and duty
Poking through with all them shoots of beauty
Thompson Girl walking from Churchill
Across the icy world with polar bears, it's mostly uphill
But when she saw that nickel stack
She whistled hard and I whistled back, Thompson Girl
Grunt work, time between dream state and duty
Poking through with all them shoots of beauty
Grunt work somewhere between dreams and duty
Poking through with all them shoots of beauty
Thompson Girl, we're down to the dead houseplants
Thompson Girl, we've jettisoned every thing we can
She says springtime's coming
Wait til you see
It poking through with them shoots of beauty
It's the end of rent-a-movie weather
It's time to end this siege together, Thompson Girl
Thompson Girl

3. What is one of your favorite trips that you've taken? What made it great?
Being born at the end of the Depression in a small village in Canada just south of the tundra would not seem to give one travel aspirations. We did not even have television to inspire us. But aspire I did. I longed to see the exotic places pictured in National Geographic. I wanted to see a real castle and visit places where people looked, dressed and spoke differently than we did.
This penchant to see things that were new to me came early. My mother took my two brothers and I to Winnipeg to visit her oldest sister, my aunt, Caroline Sitter. I saw a sight I will always remember. The novelty was a neon sign which we had never seen, and this one moved. It had three little pigs jumping into a can of Klik, Canada’s equivalent to Spam. We loved that sign and marveled at such ingenuity. I was ready to see the rest of the world.
We had many vacations to Canada to visit family. On one trip to Sioux Lookout for Christmas our car froze and we spent most of the next day dealing with the car. My first trip abroad was to Germany..My second husband was an Air Force officer and we were able to fly free when space was available..Just before Easter of 1974 we flew to Germany. We rented a car. We visited castles on the Rhine and experienced the autobon..at speeds that terrified us. We flew on to Madrid, Spain and while attempting to visit the presidential palace we found ourselves adrift in the middle of a Good Friday procession in a very Catholic country. It was an experience. We went North to Segovia to see a great aquaduct still in use. We visited Queen Isabella’s castle from where she bid Columbus “Goodbye”. Peter who was 10 at the time remembered the old lady dressed all in black. She had a long nose with a wart on the end. She sold trinkets outside the palace wall. When we returned home and Peter’s friend David asked what he saw in Europe Peter told him about this woman. We went on to Malaga where we picked fresh oranges off the tree. We went on to Fuengirola where we swam on the Costa del Sol. It was April and we welcomed the warmth.
When Jaylyn was in College she did a semester in the South of England. I paid her a visit during that time and we spent a couple days in London experiencing the pigeons in Trafalger Square, and Harrods where we could afford only the smallest treasures. We watched the guard change at Buckingham palace. We took the train to Stonehenge and absorbed the mystery of that place. We returned to Salisbury for the end of evensong. The young choir boys all in their robes with Elizabethan collars looked angelic. We visited Bath and went to a puppet show there.
In 1988 I took a solo trip to Scotland and England. I had not planned to go alone but shortly before our planned trip my husband revealed to me that he had been having a long standing affair with a “friend” from our church in Bedford with whom he frequently played tennis..I decided to go alone to Scotland and decide what to do about my marital situation when I returned. I was visiting a cousin of my first husband. The family had always stayed in touch with me and the children after our divorce. The cousin I was visiting, Maurice Paterson and his wife Avril had visited us in Warner. Maurice showed me the houses in Glasgow once occupied by relatives now long deceased. We took a trip North with his Mother, aunt Nancy Paterson to visit places the early Joss family lived and worked. An uncle, Peter Joss, and his wife Leslie, took me to Edinburgh and a visit to the castle. I had bought a Brit rail pass and proceeded to head across England. I went to York and visited the cathedral there . Restorations had just been completed. I visited Oxford and went down to Penzance. I made my way back to London for a bit more sightseeing. I went to St Pauls and Westminster Abby. There I stood where kings and queens and heads of state had also stood. I flew home. Along my travels I considered the state of my marriage and the knowledge that i could not overlook such a betrayal. I would, and did divorce Philip Miller Pahl
.
My neighbors in Warner, Janet and Spence Danby had a villa in the Praia de Salema in Portugal. They spent winters there. We were good friends and Janet invited me to visit. I made the trip in Spring when all the olive trees were at the end of their bloom and the earth was covered in their fallen blossoms referred to as Algarve snow. We visited Sintra. We watched fishermen sit on small rock ledges and reel in large fish without falling. They were lowered to their ledges by rope and a very trusted friend I presume. We watched the fishermen in Lagos bringing their catch to the market on the shore. We hiked daily and sipped very good but inexpensive wine in the evening. It was a beautiful time.
My first trip to Tuscany was with friends from Warner. Our hotel was within easy walking distance to the National Gallery, the Uffizzi, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the market, the Ponte Vecchio and the train station. I saw Michaelangelo’s ,”David” at the National Gallery, Titian’s, “Birth of Dawn” was at the Uffizzi. There seemed to be an endless number of great paintings there. We took a bus tour to Sienna, a town of many steeples competing to be the highest. The narrow cobblestone streets were used for an annual horse race which seemed like madness incarnate to me. My friend, Fran and I took the train to Arezzo, the birthplace of Guido, who in 990 invented the musical scale. We went to Pisa with its incredibly leaning tower.. Years later when Hillary graduated from High School, I did this same trip with her. This time she persuaded me to climb every step to the top of the dome of the Cathedral de Santa Maria del Fiore. It was her first trip to Europe and she too loved Florence. In Feosole we witnessed a vigorous conversation between a policeman and an Italian woman double parked outside a bakery. We could not understand what was said but no neon lights were necessary to understand the meaning of the event.
My next adventures was again with Fran Brown, a realtor from Warner and a neighbor couple .. We were on our way the the French Riviera. I was the only one of the four of us who had our drivers license with us. I was designated. The hotels in Nice on the beach were impressive but the beach was not the sand to which we are accustomed. It was pebbles, loose pebbles difficult to navigate. It was March and we came with no plans to be swimming. We decided to visit Monaco. It was a series of switchbacks to get there and the same in reverse to get out. I was more than ready to be in the countryside. We drove to Aix en Provence..I walked to the atelier of Paul Cezanne and his famous still life with the blue tablecloth and bowl of onions was set just as it is in his famous painting. I trust someone changes the onions at regular intervals. My most favorite part of that trip was our trek through Avignon and Arles. In Avignon we sang the song we learned in eighth grade French class, “Sur la ponte, D’Avignon”. Van Gogh painted 187 paintings in Arles. His art lives on there in many ways. Our hotel room was decorated like his four room yellow house in Arles. The house was bombed in WWII but the replica is accurate. Coffee shops have his influence in their cups and napkins. The yellow of his fields, haystacks and house were evident everywhere. Arles was worth the whole trip.
As I had done for Hillary I planned to take Anne to Europe for her High School graduation gift but her Mom took her to Paris and Switzerland so my trip came much after the fact. In 2012 AAA offered a 10 day vacation in Ireland for a set price. We received a booklet listing all the participating Bed and Breakfast establishments and we made our plans with all our reservations confirmed before we left. We flew to Dublin and were transported to our hotel downtown which was lovely. We toured Guinness Beer and for our participation were treated to a pint. Anne had hers and mine. I have not one taste bud that can tolerate beer no matter how good or famous it is claimed to be. We were to pick up our car the next morning. This was our first, but only glitch in the entire trip. Since neither Anne nor I had driven a standard shift for years I did order an automatic shift. We were given (with profuse apologies) a standard shift Opal.with no instructions. We hopped to a start and I drove about 6 blocks to find a place to make a u turn with this vehicle. I could not drive on the “wrong” side of the road on streets that seemed too narrow for two bicycles to safely pass. We went back to the car rental and the Irish man oozing Irish charm from every pore. He would now set us up with a,” lovely car”, and with a grand flourish of papers and charm he set down the paperwork and keys to a new Jaguar. Anne was thrilled. I was consumed with the dread of debtors prison if we harmed this car. We were on our way. I drove to Cork. Anne drove the rest of the trip.. She loved it and did a fine job. We visited Waterford and watched the glassblowers and etchers. We went on to the Dingle Peninsula. People everywhere were kind, helpful and very friendly. Meals were hardy and huge. We frequently laughed at the enormous servings. Our B&B’s were always clean and some were very elegant. We drove along the Hills of Moher. The rich, lush greenness is everywhere. We joined the cue but only watched as others contorted their bodies in order to kiss the Blarney Stone. We drove on roads we shared with sheep and cows. We ferried across Galway Bay and drove on to Kylemore Castle. It continued at that time to be occupied by Benedictines. They are unbelievable gardeners.Every blade of grass and every petal and bough was in its proper place. We visited ruins of very old churches . We saw more Ankh crosses than we thought existed. We were making our way to our B&B near the airport.. We both admitted to feeling sad that it was coming to its end. It is a most beautiful country. and we both hoped very much that we would be back one day. Ireland has been a most favorite trip but I have to admit that there are many exotic and wonderful places I’ve never seen and like Ireland, I cannot fathom the beauty until I experience it.
It is not possible to compare one vacation trip to another. They all have their individual history, charm and mystique. Dbrovnik, Croatia was one of those places. We swam in the Adriatic Sea. Our hotel was just outside the ancient wall The old city within the wall had cobblestone streets. The antiquity of the place was slightly disturbed by the presence of modern movie equipment filming the TV show, “Game of Thrones”. It was all interesting. The shop keepers were very helpful and friendly. We walked the entire length of the wall, It was high above the sea and obviously very advantageous to interfere with any threat from the sea. We visited Montenegro and saw salt being retrieved from the sea. Montenegro also has a great wall that predates that of China.. We went to Mostar in Bosnia Herzegovina and there I saw more minarets than I will likely see for the rest of my life. We saw men walking into the mosques while the women knelt on the concrete outside with their faces to the ground. Mostar is known for its iconic arched bridge, Stari Most, a reconstructed arched bridge. We were accosted by beggars as we crossed the bridge who felt free to slap us if we did not give them money. Our group was turned out of one restaurant because one woman in our group was wearing a sundress and her shoulders were bare. I was glad to have experienced that place but also very happy to be away from there and safely back in Croatia.. Dubrovnk was a great trip and given my age and infirmities, it will have been my last trip overseas.
Aside from my travels in Europe, I loved the Virgin Islands and Bermuda . The Canadian Rockies remain one of my favorite destinations.I made one trip with Anne, Diggs and Jaylyn.. I returned to the Rockies with Pete, Jenn and Kalote before Kalote was even walking.. Pete, Kalote and I returned when Kalote was older. I made the trip once with Kip and Bobbie. The mountains are magnificent. The greenness of Lake Louise is unforgettable.. On one trip as we left the parking lot we heard eery unfinished strains of, “:Amazing Grace” . As we approached the lake we could clearly see an older gentleman in lederhosen giving tips to a visitor on playing an alpine horn surrounded by mountains. I have photographed Kalote as a baby and in later years with Takakah Falls in the background. We have stopped on the highway for rock slides to be cleared and to allow the ring horned sheep pass in droves. We have had elk grazing at our motel window in Banff. Anne,Diggs, Jaylyn and I rode the gondola to the top of Sulphur Moubtain. I have driven through the Frazier Canyon. in British Columbia and have visited the Maritime provinces on the other end of Canada. i have returned to Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay for class reunions. I have traveled in the United States . I have never needed any provocation to travel and have found something to enjoy and admire everywhere I visited .
To choose one travel experience over another as a favorite is an impossible exercise. They cannot be compared. Each enlarges ones experience of life. Each arouses a curiosity about something or some place previously unexplored. Every adventure has the potential to allow us to see a broader picture, to think a new way, to align our views in new order.. Then again, it may just be that three little pigs jumping into a can of Klik provoke those curiosities that make you want to see and experience what you have not known before .

Reconnecting: Second Entry
It was February 2001. I remember that plane ride home. I had just flown from Toronto to Winnipeg. The Winnipeg airport was rushing with people, and I hurried out the sliding doors into the piercing cold. It was snowing and my eyelashes froze, but growing up in Ontario I knew how to handle cold winters.
I rented a car and drove to the hotel I was staying at downtown. The hotel was nice, but I couldn’t think of anything except for what the next day was going to be like. Once I got up to my room, I unpacked a couple things and then called my parents. They were back in Ontario and were expecting me to call. I remember the call went well, but they were both anxious about the next day. They had known this was going to happen, but still they seemed to be so upset about it. I guess that’s normal.
It took me some time to get to sleep that night. I had so much anxiety in the anticipation that I just laid there, waiting for the next day to come sooner. I wondered what they would say, how they would act, and what they were going to think of me.
I remember waking up that morning. The snow was blowing outside and the light from it was beautiful. Once I got to the building where everyone was waiting, I suddenly felt a weight lift off my shoulders. I was there. It was happening.
Everything changed when I walked in that room. I was home. There they were, my parents, and my siblings: my family.
It was there again; our laughs filled the room, ringing the same pitch and tone. We all looked so similar it almost felt unreal. We talked for hours. Being there felt so comfortable.
In those first moments, nobody cried. In that moment we were just happy to be together again. We talked about our lives, and how we all just spent those years apart thinking about finding each other. I told them about my adoptive parents. How they were caring, and kind people, and how I grew up in a good home. I wanted them to know that I had always wanted to find them. I spent my whole life wanting to tell them this and finally there they were, waiting to listen.
We spent the whole day together laughing. That night we went out to one of the bars. Going out that night was a good thing. We went out and laughed and finally the tears came. We could finally be vulnerable in that way, and it was a revelation I hadn’t uncovered until that moment.

Alberta is calling, but even before it did, Ontario's Bruno Sentone looked at the cost of living and took the bait. The 33-year-old personal banker said he tried to make life in Ontario work in 2020. He left Toronto's high rent prices and moved an hour north, to Barrie, where eventually rents went up there too.
So last June, he packed his car and drove across the country to Calgary, where rent is cheaper, taxes are lower, and his salary is higher. Either biting the bullet in Barrie or going through the consequences of staying in a place that I know is unaffordable," said Sentone.
He isn't alone. Of the 50,000 people who left Ontario for Alberta or Atlantic Canada in the last 12 months, 20,000 chose the province in the prairies less than a year after moving. As he watches housing and rent prices rise, Sentone is afraid Alberta is following in Ontario's footsteps and becoming less affordable by the day.
"Things are affordable now, and they might be for a little while, but if the influx of people just like myself keep coming in, but we don't have enough properties being built or made available, then that's a problem."
For new and old Albertans who are worried about the rising cost of living as record-high numbers of people move here, economist Mike Moffatt says they're right to be concerned. He's also the senior director of the Smart Prosperity Institute, an Ottawa think tank looking at the economy.
"This is a phenomenon we've seen in southern Ontario for years," said Moffatt. "When families from Toronto started moving to places like London, our housing prices tripled in less than 15 years."
He recalls the "musical chairs effect," where families from Toronto moved somewhere more affordable, like Kitchener-Waterloo, then as that city became more expensive, the people living there were displaced to somewhere further away, and so on. All of this could very well happen in Alberta, he says.
And the trend isn't going away anytime soon, says Moffatt, since the Ontarians moving to Alberta are younger and are chasing affordability and quality of life, not job growth in the oil and gas sector, as was seen in the past. They'll need to make sure that they build enough housing to support that population, which unfortunately didn't happen in southwestern Ontario, and that caused a lot of our current affordability challenges.
As the province continues its Alberta is Calling campaign, luring people from Ontario and Atlantic Canada to move here, the impact in Alberta is already being seen. Danison with Rentals.ca keeps track of rent prices in vacant units from Rentals.ca and Rentfaster.ca and releases a report each month.
"He found that Calgary had the fastest increasing rents, among condos and apartments, in the country in February; rents in Calgary rose 28.1 percent annually and 3.8 percent over the past three months to $1,862," the report said.
While that's still below the national average, Danison says it's a new problem in Calgary. He's been putting the reports together for nearly five years, and he says he's never seen rents so high or vacancy so low here, although Calgary has been building record-high supply and is expected to continue that trend.
"But it's still not enough to meet the demand," said Danison, in an interview with CBC. "This isn't just an issue in Calgary anymore; Red Deer is also facing surprising year-over-year rent increases, he says—20 percent and 19 percent, respectively, for a one-bedroom.
For Ontarians looking for affordability with a major city lifestyle, Danison has two suggestions in the west: Edmonton and Winnipeg, where "it's cheap and rents are moderate compared to the other big cities."

Taty wakes up the next day and sees that Cale isn’t beside her. She checks the time and sees that it’s 11:40am, meaning he’s at practice. She goes to the bathroom to start her morning routine. She then goes to the kitchen to make herself some breakfast. She sees a note on the island table.
“Babe, I left for practice. I should be home around 2,” read the note.
She makes herself some coffee and another reboltido. She cleans up the kitchen and then heads to the bathroom to shower. She showers and changes into a New York Mets shirt and joggers. She also brushes her hair and leaves it out. She goes to the living room and starts planning out what she’s gonna talk about for her next podcast episode, which she’ll be recording later on that night. Before she knows it, Cale comes home with his gear bag in tow. He goes straight to the balcony to air out his gear before making his way over to Taty.
“Hey baby, how was practice?” she asks, kissing him.
“Hard and really long,” he replies, causing her to snort.
“That’s what she said,” she giggles, causing him to roll his eyes.
“You’re such a child,” he chuckles, heading to the kitchen.
“Don’t forget I’m older than you, bud!” she retorts.
“By two years only!” he bites back, grabbing a Gatorade bottle from the fridge.
“Anyway, did you have lunch?” she asks him.
“Yeah, I ate at the rink,” he informs her.
“Good. I’m gonna record the podcast. Is it okay if I record out here?” she asks.
“Of course. I’ll just be in the room. Might even take a nap,” he replies.
“Alright, I should be done after an hour,” she informs him.
“Take all the time you need, babe,” he assures her.
He heads off to the room and she sets up her laptop and her mic on the kitchen island. She starts recording and her focus for the episode is previewing the playoff matchups in the Western Conference, since the episode prior focused on the Eastern Conference. She breaks down every matchup talking about each team’s depth at forward, defense, and goaltender.
“The next matchup I’m gonna break down is the Colorado Avalanche versus the Winnipeg Jets. I personally think Colorado easily wins this series and this has nothing to do with my bias. Colorado is just the better team overall. In offense, Colorado has the slight edge, although Winnipeg has some great scorers like Scheifele, Laine, Connor, Ehlers, and Wheeler. In defense, Colorado has the edge and it’s not even close. Colorado has one of the best defensive corps in the league, with Makar, Girard, Graves, Johnson, and Cole. In goal, however, Winnipeg has the edge and it’s not even close. Hellebuyck will be a top 3 Vezina finalist again this season, after winning it last season. However, if Hellebuyck gets hurt, then the edge goes to Colorado.”
She does the rest of the Western Conference matchups in the 1st round, while also talking about key injury news in the league. After almost an hour, she finishes recording. She removes her setup and goes back into the room, to see Cale scrolling through his phone while laying in bed.
“I just finished recording. I’ll probably edit it later tonight to post it tomorrow,” she informs him.
“Speaking of tonight, do you mind if I take you out on a date?” he asks, sitting up.
“Of course not, where do you have in mind?” she asks.
“It’s a surprise,” he smiles, causing her to whine.
“Just a little hint please!” she cries out.
“You’re gonna love it and have fun. I promise,” he assures her.
“What time are we going? I need to get ready,” she explains.
“I was thinking 6, but we can go whatever time you want. The place we’re going to is open pretty late,” he informs her.
“Alright. I’m gonna start getting ready,” she informs him.
She grabs her flat iron and her make up bag and takes them to the bathroom. She turns on the flat iron and re-touches her hair while she listens to music on her phone. After her hair is re-touched, she starts working on her makeup. She puts on minimal makeup, since she’s not a big make-up person. She then goes to the room and sees Cale is dressed in a super casual outfit.
“Should I dress comfortably then?” she asks.
“Yes, dress comfortably because we’re gonna be doing something a little athletic,” he informs her.
“Are we going roller skating?” she asks, knowing how she can’t skate to save her life..
“I’m not telling you,” he smirks.
“You’re the worst!” she whines.
“You’re gonna love it, trust me,” he assures her.
“I do trust you. I just don’t like the fact that I don’t know where you’re taking me,” she informs him.
“I know, which is why I’m not telling you. It makes it more fun,” he smiles.
She sticks her tongue out at him in response.
“Go change, babe,” he replies, ignoring how she stuck her tongue out at him.
She changes into her Nolan Arenado Colorado Rockies shirt, black leather jacket, jeans and ankle boots.
“You look great,” he smiles, kissing her forehead.
“Thank you, you don’t look too bad yourself,” she teases, grabbing her small purse.
They walk out to the kitchen and he grabs his keys from the counter. They leave the apartment and make their way to the parking garage. They walk over to the car and Taty connects her phone to the car, as always. She puts her music on and they head out of the parking garage and onto the streets of Denver. After a couple minutes they head onto the highway, going south and away from the city.
“How long is the drive gonna be?” she asks him.
“Like 25 minutes. The place we’re going to is right by our practice facility,” he informs her.
“Well I’ll go to your next practice so I can see it,” she informs him.
“Maybe I can take you out on the ice for a skating lesson,” he teases, knowing how you can’t skate.
“Honestly, please do. Teach me how to skate because I can’t do it to save my life,” she sighs, thinking about how many times she ends up falling while trying to skate.
After 25 minutes, they arrive at their destination, which is TopGolf.
“Babe, you remembered!” she smiles, kissing his cheek.
She had told him before they even started dating that she always wanted to go to TopGolf since they don’t have any locations near her yet. She’s shocked he even remembered that.
“I remember everything you’ve ever said to me,” he replies, kissing her forehead.
He parks into an empty parking spot and they both get out of the car. They walk into the building and get their temperatures checked right away. They’re cleared to stay and go up to the front desk. Cale rents out a bay for the both of them. They’re escorted to their bay and given their equipment.
“You wanna go first?” he asks.
She goes to the tee with her club and puts a ball on the tee. She goes into her stance and lines her club up with the ball.
“You want me to help you with your swing?” he asks.
“Are you trying to say my stance is bad?” she scoffs, shooting him a glare.
“No babe!” he immediately responds, backtracking.
“That’s what I thought,” she adds, watching how he stays silent.
She lines her club up with the ball again before taking a big swing. She watches as the ball goes super far.
“Great swing babe! It went 295ft,” he informs her, as she makes her way to sit down.
“Let’s make it a competition to see who can hit it the farthest. Winner gets to control the music in the car and gets to pick the movie we watch tonight,” she suggests.
“Deal,” he nods.
He gets up and goes to the tee with his club and puts a ball on the tee. He goes into his stance and lines the club up with the ball.
“Babe, you want me to help you with your swing?” she asks teasingly, making fun of what he said earlier.
“Fuck off,” he groans, shaking his head.
She just laughs in response as he takes his swing, hitting the ball.
“Fuck, you threw me off! That was a terrible swing,” he groans, walking away from the tee.
“It wasn’t terrible, babe! It went 242ft,” she assures him.
“That’s fucking terrible, babe,” he replies, shaking his head in disappointment.
The two go back and forth and after an hour, Taty is crowned the winner.
“In your face, eat shit!” she yells in his ear.
“How are you so competitive?” he asks in disbelief.
“I grew up with 3 sisters. I’ll always be competitive,” she informs him.
The food that they ordered arrives and they eat it, while discussing Cale’s day off tomorrow before Game 1 on Wednesday. They finish eating and return everything back to the front desk, before leaving. They go back to the car and Taty connects her phone to the car.
“I had a great time by the way. Hopefully with practice, I’ll be able to go to a real golf course and dominate someday,” she replies.
“I can totally help with that,” he replies, backing out of the parking spot.
“If my dad heard me talking about going to a golf course, he would be so disappointed,” she giggles.
“Why?” he asks, driving out of the parking lot.
“He hates golf, like absolutely hates it. He thinks it’s the most boring thing ever and doesn’t even think it should be called a sport,” she explains.
“He just needs to try it once and then maybe he might change his mind,” he suggests.
Taty starts singing along to the music playing through the speakers, while Cale gets back on the highway to head back to the city.
“Babe, I found this restaurant that I think you’ll really enjoy. It’s a bit of a drive since it’s pretty north of the city, but I want to take you there anyway tomorrow night. Do you want me to take you there tomorrow night?” he asks.
“Of course! I expect you to take me out all day tomorrow,” she informs him.
“Oh I will. I haven’t taken you really anywhere around the city and I already know the places you’d enjoy,” he assures her.
“10/10 would boyfriend again,” she smiles, lacing her fingers with his over the center console.
After half an hour, they arrive at the apartment complex and park in the garage. They make their way up the elevator and to the apartment. They make their way inside the apartment Taty goes to the room to pick out her pajamas. She grabs her pajamas and heads to the bathroom. She washes her face, ties up her hair, brushes her teeth, and changes into her pajamas. She leaves the bathroom and goes to the room where she sees Cale already laying in bed, under the covers. She follows suit and joins him under the covers. She grabs the remote and cuddles into his side, as she chooses a movie for them to watch. She settles on Miracle and he chuckles.
“Miracle really?” he asks, shaking his head.
“This is my favorite movie of all time. I can literally quote this movie and besides, I got to pick the movie tonight, so deal with it,” she replies, bumping his shoulder.
“I’m only messing with you babe! I like this movie, I just didn’t think you would pick it. I thought you would pick something different,” he replies.
“Tonight I’m in the mood for this movie, so we’re watching it,” she explains, a finality in her voice.
“Aye aye, captain,” he teases.
She squeezes his nipple, causing him to yelp.
“Ow! What the fuck was that for?!?” he yells in pain, rubbing his nipple to help relieve the pain.
“For being a smartass,” she smirks, pressing play on the movie.
They watch the movie together and Taty really does quote like the majority of the movie, which generates laughter out of Cale. Before they know it, the movie is over and Taty is taking it off from Disney+.
“You weren’t lying when you said you could quote most of the movie,” he says.
“I used to watch this movie like multiple times a week. Of course I could quote the movie,” she replies incredulously.
“It’s like every day you do something that amazes me,” he responds truthfully.
“I am pretty amazing,” she smiles.
“Alright, that’s enough ego for you,” he teases.
“Oh look who’s talking about ego, Mr. I’m the Avs’ best d-man,” she teases, shooting him a look.
“Alright, you got a point there,” he replies, not even bothering to argue that.
“I always got points, babe,” she adds, yawning.
“Alright, I think that’s a sign we should call it a night. We got a long day tomorrow,” he informs her.
“You’re gonna show me around the city, right?” she asks, turning over to her side.
“Yes, babe,” he replies, wrapping his arms around her as the big spoon.
“Goodnight,” she yawns, her eyes closing.
“Goodnight princess,” he smiles, kissing her hair.
The next morning, Taty wakes up and sees the bed is empty beside her. She gets up and heads to the bathroom to brush her teeth. She then goes to the kitchen and finds Cale in the kitchen, making them breakfast once again.
“Good morning, babe. Do you ever sleep?” she asks, wrapping her arms around him from behind.
“Good morning princess. I do sleep. Remember, I always take naps during the day,” he replies, turning around to kiss her.
“Yeah I know, I’m just messing with you,” she replies, hip checking him lightly.
She gets mugs out for the coffee and plates out for the food. After a minute, he’s done making breakfast and puts the food on their plates. They sit down on the island to eat it.
“So what places are you taking me today?” she asks.
“Bold of you to assume I would give you that information,” he smirks, taking a sip of coffee.
“Why are you like this? Can’t you just tell me anything?” she whines.
“Nope, you better get used to this, because I won’t be telling you places that I’ll be taking you out to,” he replies, taking a bite out of his food.
“You’re lucky you’re hot dude,” she replies, taking a bite out of her food.
His cheeks turn even more rosy with the compliment and she holds back a giggle. They finish eating their breakfast and she cleans up the kitchen, while Cale takes a shower and gets dressed. She then follows suit and takes a shower before re-straightening her hair. She then does her makeup before changing into jeans, a black pull-over sweater, and black suede ankle boots. She grabs her small purse and goes out to the living room, where she sees Cale dressed casually, scrolling on his phone.
“You’re ready to go?” he asks her, pocketing his phone.
“Yeah, let’s go,” she replies, walking towards the door.
He grabs his keys from the counter and they leave the apartment. They make their way down to the garage and head over to his car. They get into the car and she connects her phone to the car right away. They drive off towards their first destination of the day. After 15 minutes, they arrive at their first destination, which is the Downtown Aquarium. They get into the parking lot and he finds an empty spot to park in.
“Aww babe, you really do remember everything I tell you,” she smiles, kissing him.
“So take that as your only hint then. I’m gonna be taking you to places that have to do with things you’ve told me about before,” he informs her.
“Wow so helpful,” she teases.
“Well sucks because it’s all you’re gonna get,” he teases back, shutting off the car.
They get out of the car and make their way inside the aquarium, hand-in-hand. They get screened and allowed to go in and they go up to the front desk. They buy their tickets and go inside the aquarium. They go through each exhibit and Taty loves petting the stingrays and dolphins. She’s in awe by all the different species of fish, sharks, and other sea creatures. After almost two hours, they finish going through the entire aquarium. They leave the aquarium and head towards their next destination. They arrive at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and park in the parking lot. They walk out of the car and walk towards the steps of the Basilica.
“I know you mentioned how much you loved visiting the Basilica in Montreal and how beautiful it was, so I figured you’d want to see the Basilica here. It’s really beautiful,” he informs her.
“A man who understands my love for the beauty of Roman Catholic churches!” she sighs dramatically, placing a hand over her heart.
“I told you I pay attention to everything you tell me,” he replies, taking her hand in his.
They finally make it up the steps and go inside the Basilica to tour it. Taty takes a million pictures and videos to send to her family, since they share her same love for Roman Catholic architecture. After 20 minutes, they finish the tour and head down the steps.
“We’re gonna walk to our next stop,” he informs her.
They walk a few blocks to the Colorado State Capitol and take pictures, enjoying the view of the mountains from the rotunda. They head walk down towards the Colorado Veterans Monument located in the park in front of the Capitol building. They walk the few blocks back to the car and get inside.
“Babe, are we gonna have lunch soon?” she asks, looking at the time.
“Yeah, we’re gonna go to a nice little spot around here that I think you’ll really enjoy,” he informs her.
They drive back towards downtown and head over to a spot called Brooklyn’s Finest Pizza.
“Babe, I hope you know that I’m gonna be critical of this place. I’m originally from New York so I’m gonna be critical if it doesn’t taste like authentic Brooklyn-style pizza,” she informs him.
“I expect nothing less,” he replies, as they get out of the car.
They walk towards the pizzeria and go inside, excited to see that it isn’t packed. They order their pizza and sit down at a table to wait for their pizza to come out.
“Do you come here often?” she asks him.
“Not really. I usually would just come here on off days, but not every off day. Can’t really eat too much of this stuff during the season,” he informs her.
“All I’m saying is that it wouldn’t kill you guys to not be so strict with your diet plans once in a while,” she replies, sending her family all the videos and pictures she’s taken so far.
Their food comes out and they pick it up before heading back to the table. They dig in right away and Cale waits for her reaction.
“It’s really good for not being in New York. These people know what they’re doing. I’m impressed,” she smiles, enjoying the Brooklyn-style pizza.
They eat while talking about what the following day entails, since it’s Game 1 of the 1st round of the playoffs. After a while, they finish eating and clean up. They leave the pizzeria and head back to the car.
“We’re gonna go to one more spot before heading back home and then going somewhere you’re gonna really like for dinner,” he informs her.
“Now you got me excited,” she replies, looking forward to dinner.
They make their way towards the next destination, which is City Park.
“This is the biggest park in the city. It’s kind of like our own version of Central Park but way smaller,” he informs her.
They drive inside the park and make their way towards the Zoo. They park in the parking lot and make their way to the Zoo entrance. They buy tickets and make their way inside the Zoo. They go through each exhibit and Taty enjoys seeing the aquatic animals the most, like the penguins. After almost two hours, they finish going through the Zoo. They then walk back to their car and drive through the rest of the park, enjoying the view of it. They then drive back to the apartment to relax before leaving for dinner.
They arrive at the apartment and Cale goes straight to the room to nap. Taty goes to the living room and decides to get some work done, while he takes his nap. After an hour, Cale wakes up from his nap.
“Ready to go?” he asks her, coming out of the room.
“Yeah just give me a minute to put my stuff away,” she informs him, turning off her laptop.
She puts her stuff away and grabs her small purse. He grabs his keys from the counter and they make their way out of the apartment. They make their way to the car and drive off towards the restaurant.
“Just so you know, this is gonna be a pretty long drive,” he informs her.
“How long?” she asks.
“An hour,” he informs her.
“How far out is this place?” she asks.
“Over 50 miles from here, but it’ll be worth it. I promise,” he assures her, as they make their way towards the highway.
They listen to music the entire ride, as Taty takes in the view of the mountains, the further they get away from the city. After what feels like forever, but really it was only an hour, they arrive at their destination.
“Babe, why are we at a mall?” she asks, getting out of the car.
“Because the restaurant is located inside the mall,” he informs her.
They make their way inside the mall and walk over towards the restaurant entitled MY Tastee’s Cajun & Dominican Food.
“I can’t believe you brought me to a Domincian restaurant!” she smiles, not believing how thoughtful he is.
“I figured you probably miss the food right now,” he replies, as they walk inside the restaurant.
They get seated and Taty immediately opens the menu, getting excited to see what native food they have on the menu.
“Babe, they have everything here! Sancocho, Mangu con los tres golpes, Mofongo, Bistec Dominicano!” she gushes, not believing that he actually found a Dominican restaurant for her.
“Your challenge is to find me the healthiest Dominican food on the menu for me,” he smiles.
“Well everything on here is not part of your diet plan but I guess I can try my best,” she winces, knowing how unhealthy Domincan food can be.
“I’m joking. It doesn’t have to be healthy,” he assures her.
The waiter comes and they order drinks before Taty orders Sancocho (dominican soup) for Cale, since it’s like the healthiest Domincan item on the menu. She then orders rice, beans, bistec, and tostones for herself.
“I still can’t believe you found this place! They’re even playing Dominican music in here!” she gushes, taking notice of the merengue song playing in the background.
“It wasn’t easy, trust me,” he replies.
They make small talk, with Taty explaining dominican food to him. After a short while, their food arrives and they dig in right away.
“Wow this soup is really good. What type of potatoes are these?” he asks.
“Those aren’t potatoes babe. They’re roots or as we call them biberes. It’s yucca, yautia, and batata,” she informs him.
“Oh well, they’re really good,” he smiles.
She loves how flavorful her bistec is and the tostones are so crisp.
“Wow, this is good authentic Dominican food. I’m impressed,” she smiles, the food making her think of home.
“I told you it would be worth it,” he smiles.
They finish eating and pay before leaving. They head back to the car to make the trip back to the car. It’s on the ride back that she starts thinking about how she’s falling in love with Cale and it finally hits her that this is what being in love feels like and she never wants it to end.

background fic ~ the truth
((hello! i wrote this way before the oc even properly started, but i feel like now is a good time to post this. so if you would like to know what really happened with tavi’s dad then maybe read this ;) some characters from the previous background fic make an appearance so i’ll leave a quick little list of the most important ones below. if you’re going to read this then enjoy (it’s really short i promise)! ps. ignore the spelling/grammar errors. tw: little mention of blood and violence))
((list of names: - Caspar Hayes: Tavi’s dad - Jimmie Davis: Caspar’s friend, they perform jazz music together - judge Laurenson: he’s the one who gave Caspar his jail sentence - Wilfred Wallis: the mayor of Winnipeg))
*****
[2nd of April 2084]
“Please, please! I beg you,” Jimmie Davis is on his knees on the floor, his hands clasped together. “I can’t leave my wife. She needs me.”
Judge Laurenson sighs. “Listen Mr Davis, I am willing to help you but only under one condition.”
At that Jimmie opens his eyes and looks up hopefully. He would do whatever is asked of him, everything for his wife. “Anything! I will do anything.”
“I need a name.”
“A name? Name for what? What name?”
The judge sighs again, “you know very well what I mean. Someone needs to take the blame for this.”
There is only one name that pops up into Jimmie’s head. But no. He can’t do that.
“Why not just let the case disappear?” he asks, desperately trying to find a way out. “You must have the power to do that!”
“Listen, you came to me. You need my help,” the judge speaks without any emotions. He must have done this more often, let an innocent person take the blame for something they had no part in. It doesn’t even matter whose name Jimmie is going to say, an innocent person will be brought into this mess. “We will play by my rules, or we won’t play at all.”
*****
A couple of weeks ago, the first letter had arrived.
Dear residents,
Winnipeg is a city that focusses on the future. I, Wilfred Wallis, think it is time to stop procrastinating and start the future today. The City Council and I put a lot of value in offering all citizens the best living circumstances as possible. To realize this the Council has come to the decision to buy all the land, starting with the district that is Maybank.
The residents of this district are asked to visit City Hall on the time and date specified below. Please bring the following documents to the appointment: this letter, identification papers of all residents living on your address, and your current lease contract.
Your appointment is: 11.05 AM on March 17, 2084
We would like to underline that the consequences for you, the residents, will not be major.
Let us build the future together.
Wilfred Wallis, mayor of Winnipeg
A letter full of meaningless words and empty promises.
Jimmie had gone to the City Hall on the day of his appointment, feeling like there was nothing to worry about. But when he saw the new lease contract, he had almost shat his pants.
The letter had promised no major consequences would come of this. A rental increase of 250 percent may not be a major consequence for the higher and richer Castes, but for everyone who didn’t have a lot of zeros in their back accounts, a rent of 3500 dollars a month meant financial suicide.
When Jimmie saw that number, he had stormed out of the City Hall. He would never sign such a lease contract. Not even with a gun pressed against his forehead.
More letters arrived in the following weeks, but it had been easy to ignore them. They were shoved into the garbage container, never to be spoken of again.
Until one day.
Jimmie had returned home after a performance in a jazz venue. All the lights in his house were out, despite it being well past midnight. He usually found his wife watching the tv, waiting for him to come home.
He found his wife shivering in a corner in the kitchen, her face wet from tears. Jimmie hurried towards her, pulling her into his arms. “Sharon, what’s wrong?”
She pointed to the front door, “so-o-ome men.” Her lip started to quiver, tears again spilling from her eyes. “They knocked, and- and I opened the door. But then they- they.”
Anger, white hot anger. That’s what Jimmie felt.
His wife tried again, “They- they were so strong. They pushed me aside and came in.”
“Who were they, Sharon? What did they do?”
She swallowed once. Tears were still running down her cheeks. “I-I don’t know, they said it was our own fault-t. Be-because we hadn’t signed a contract.” Her shaking intensified and she had trouble breathing, “Jim, I was so scared.”
“Honey, shush, I’m here now.” He tried to calm her, brushing her hair out of her face. “What did they do?”
“They- they. Took some of-of our posse-si-ons.” A loud sob left her body, “and all of our savings.”
Jimmie directed her towards a chair. One of the few things left in their living room he realized.
“I’ll be right back honey.” He planted a kiss on her forehead, “lock the door and don’t let anyone in, okay?”
His wife didn’t seem to fully take in what he had said. Her blank eyes didn’t leave his face.
He lifted one of the floorboards and took out the gun.
He made it all the way to the door when his wife called out, finally realizing what was about to happen. “Jimmie, where are you going? Please don’t leave me!”
But Jimmie didn’t answer. No. He jumped into his car and drove all the way to the other side of town.
All the windows of the mayor’s house revealed dark rooms. Except for one.
Jimmie climbed over the fence and walked across the lawn to that one window.
He bashed it open and jumped inside.
The mayor didn’t have the time to around before a gun was pressed onto his temple.
“You are a scumbag. The filthiest there is,” Jimmie hissed, his spit flying everywhere.
The mayor, frozen from fear, said, “take everything you want.”
Stupid fool. Jimmie wasn’t after money or valuables, there was only one thing he wanted in that moment.
The person who had caused all of this, deserved to suffer.
“Your men scared my wife,” he pushed the gun a little harder onto the mayor’s temple.
The mayor let out a snicker. He found the situation quite amusing, not fully realizing the danger he was in. “I’m guessing you’re the idiot who refuses to cooperate with us.”
“You have ruined our lives.” With all the calmness he could muster, Jimmie said, “the only idiot in this room is you.”
Pang.
Red stains were scattered all over Jimmie. His face, his neck, his arm, all covered with blood. The metalic smell filled his nose as soon as the bullet went through the mayor’s skull.
The body stayed in the chair, almost like nothing was wrong. Like the man wasn’t dead. But then it started to lean sideways, and with a loud thud it hit the ground.
He had already been out of the window when a scream pierced through the silence, “No! Willie!”
Jimmie didn’t turn around. He didn’t see the young female clutching the dead body of her husband close to her chest. The gun shot must have alarmed her. Blood was pooling all around her, turning her satin pyjamas bright red.
But she didn’t let go of her husband.
Not once.
Not even when the housekeeper found her the next morning and called the police.
*****
“Mr Davis, you’re wasting a lot of my time.” Judge Laurenson sighs, bringing Jimmie back to reality. “If you’re not going to give me a name, take your money and ...”
“Caspar Hayes.”

You know what's crazy?
My co-workers in Winnipeg can get a 1 bedroom apartment for about $750/month, a two bedroom for about $1000/month. Basically everyone owns a car.
Out of my co-workers in Vancouver I can't think of a single person under 35 who lives on their own. Most don't have vehicles and some can't drive. I live 45 minutes away from the city by train and my rent costs $1370/month. The tiniest, crappiest 1 bedroom I ever lived in cost $1250/month and it was a ground level apartment with no windows and plenty of cockroaches.
Yet our wages are the exact same.
