ORIGINAL CONTENT: Looking up at the stoves at the Carrie Furnaces at US Steel Homestead works outside of Pittsburgh. More photos in link in FB comments. This image is from 2013, went down there with my people from Acoustic Archives. They designed a 3D microphone complete with silicone human ears that allows them to capture the acoustics of a room exactly as your ears would hear it. I shot photos and they documented the acoustics of the shuttered mill, including inside of the hot metal rail car USS that sits on the property. or

Part 1 of 2, The Setting: Last night we visited the pretty incredible #CarrieFurnace National Historical Landmark thanks to @settledwork telling us about an aluminum casting class happening there onsite last night. I’m embarrassed to say it was my first time there and it did not disappoint. Thank you to the #RiversOfSteel crew. You just can’t oversell a place like this where the former ironworks blast furnaces made the iron that made the steel that made the Empire Star Building + huge percentages of the old steel in buildings and railroads built in the early to mid 20th century. Now a space for historical and ecological and cultural exploration in the form of a legit brownfield, where post heavy, heavy industrial decay meets nature actively reclaiming space. Outside smelled unexpectedly and incredibly green and sweet from the adjacent and onsite meadows. See also: Dan McAdams, aka Crosshair Silkscreen heaven.
