reblogging this because it is touching and very deep🥹
I just can’t get over the sweetness of Robert changing the lyrics of Carouselambra’s part in the 90’s from dull is the armour, cold is the day to strong was your armour, love was your bow…

just need to announce that this is a pro-ITTOD blog. anti-ITTODers dni tbh
#the only real dud for me on ITTOD is Hot Dog. which like. obviously.#i don't hate it. it's fun but kinda embarrassing to be on that album#Fool in the Rain is a masterpiece#Carouselambra is... an epic of sorts. it is what it is. but the bridge (?) is one of the best moments on the whole album#people are so harsh. i don't expect it to be people's favorite lz album (it's far from mine) but it's really good#also Coda has some good moments omg. hello? Bonzo's Montreux???#alright that's all. just wanted to rant :)

Didn't even notice this yesterday, but went back to the library today and found this a few books away from that horribly formatted Michael Jackson spine:
So I picked it up and began to skim through it, but didn't get too far, because I had to put it back on the shelf in disgust when I saw "The Crunge" listed in the "Top Ten Worst LZ" songs list (along with "Carouselambra" and "Wearing and Tearing", so clearly this person cannot be trusted to provide credible insight or knowledge on Zep). Never talk to me or my awkward bisexual disaster problem child of a song ever again.
Edited to add: I just want to make clear that I have no problem with fellow LZ fans having personal opinions and not liking certain songs. But for some dude to make a "Worst Songs" list just doesn't sit right with me.
#listen the crunge doesn't make my top ten or possibly even twenty fave led zeppelin songs but it holds a special place in my queer little ❤️#i will die on this fucking hill#even if I never do find that bridge#led zeppelin#the crunge#actual bisexual anthem “the crunge”#why even have a “worst songs” list?#I wanna tell you 'bout my good thing...

In Through the Airlock
In Through the Airlock, David Starkins, 1981
In Through the Airlock (ITtA) was one of the earliest avant-garde RPGs. Writing and playtesting started about a year after Traveller was released, but it wasn't until 1980 that things really took off. That was the year Led Zeppelin's album In Through The Out Door was released, and it was a major influence. Starkins said he listened to the album almost exclusively when writing the game's major revision and its companion setting book. The album is widely considered one of Zeppelin's worst, partly because it doesn't fit with the rest of their work. Lots of synth, a straight-up country song in the middle of it, different instruments at the forefront.
The few years before this game came out were a prolific time for new sci-fi. Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back were obviously the biggest deal, but Mad Max, Alien, Star Trek: the Motion Picture, The Black Hole, installments of both Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, Battlestar Galactica, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and even the utter nonsense that was Moonraker all came out within three years of each other. ITtA was spoiled for choice when it came to inspiration. Of that set, the major influences were definitely Alien, BSG, and Flash Gordon. ITtA blends them, the ten-years-earlier 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the mechanics of early Traveller into a military sci-fi game with a distinctly oddball feel.
In ITtA your characters are tasked with taking over capital starships with the least amount of damage possible to the structure. (Why sink a ship when you can take it over instead?) They cut through the airlock, re-seal it with some specialized gear, cut through the inside, and commando their way through the halls with stunners and nets. As the game goes on they're supposed to learn more about a (never detailed) threat coming from interplanetary space and galvanize people to fight against it. Starkins cited this particular stanza from Carouselambra as a major inspiration for the setting:
How keen the storied hunter's eye prevails upon the land To seek the unsuspecting and the weak And powerless the fabled sat, too smug to lift a hand Toward the foe that threatened from the deep Who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand Adrift upon a sea of futile speech? And to fall to fate and make the 'status plan' But no one there had heaven within their reach
It's definitely on the harder side of sci-fi, at least for what was known in 1981 (before the personal computer). For example, the game emphasizes repeatedly that there's no sound in space - that your characters will be floating through the void, hearing only radio static and navigation beacons from the moment they leave their ship to when they enter. The art (b/w line drawings) shows people floating rather than standing. The game ran more or less like Classic Traveler, but stripped down to just what you would need for this particular premise.
I mentioned "avant-garde" earlier. Production quality was very high for a game of its time. ITtA was three paperbacks (character + rules, ships + gear, GM book), but it shipped in a multi-album record box with a black cover and the name inlaid with "holographic" paper. It even came with a cassette tape (irony) containing a somewhat amateurish audio drama, attempting to set the mood for the game. It spoils a little of the reveal of the impending big bad, but that might not be a bad thing. Starkins gets an A for effort.
Unfortunately, as with a lot of art-project games, the cost became the problem. Even in bulk production this game might not have made its money back. At $40 in 1981, and frequently miscategorized into the record section, it didn't sell many copies. If you don't want to spend an unreasonable amount on auction sites, check a used record store.

Year summary #1
Carouselambra playing in the background How the fuck do I even start this?
I had to begin from changes that took place in this year and from what I know and recall, a few took place. So maybe let's start from the one that made impact on my personal life and that is a better relationship with parents.
I was working on that since the last year, but it kicked off good in this year. Got more into old music, got into The Beatles and parents started to be such curious little shits that dad started coming to my room to check what albums I bought and I've convinced mom to watch The Beatles' movies with me - I don't remember her laughing this much since I've made her watch "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" with me. Dad even started asking me about stuff, it turns out that now I'm showing my mom old music, not the other way around like it always was. I keep a list of albums to play her when the summer comes around in the next year and there's actually quite a lot already XD
I'm so happy from getting on better terms with dad, it fills me with joy *sob sob*
I also started buying more albums, bought some pins even and since they opened a band accessory shop I've asked about posters. They don't sell them yet, but the guy asked what I'm looking for, I told him and he said that he can get them if they'll be selling posters. That can mean that maybe I'll get lucky to get a Led Zeppelin's or The Who's poster - I'm mostly keen on The Who's one <3
With this year passing I also feel that I want to go to work, but I need to be patient. This library degree is very tiring, it's not as easy and chill as the last one was. I literally wonder how I will pass upcoming exams, especially from one subject that only one person gets? This professor isn't explaining anything, like, she teaches something she doesn't understand, I mean... Why are you teaching then?
I also started learning chords on my guitar slowly, very slowly, but it's going somehow!
One thing that changed, with me working on myself was putting a serious blockade away. Not entirely, but I started clowning around with friends and it's one of the best things to do. I even clown around with mom and dad, mostly mom though. We get stupid sometimes and it's fun!
So that would sum up my personal life I think, from what I want to say. And now to this blog...
It changed again, because all heavy metal bands disappeared and this blog became classic rock oriented. That's because I stopped listening to this genre. You can say that I kinda grew bored of it? Or that I noticed I'm getting a headache from it, but like, there was this one day when I drove with my dad and the album by Led Zeppelin ended and Metallica began to play. I listened and I was honestly bored. It just hit me that there's nothing special in it. Lars is still a good drummer but like... I heard better ones and didn't find anything interesting in his playing this time. It repeated with every band I was listening to so I just dropped out of that, deciding to stick to older music. That was a good decision, honestly.
But the biggest change on here that happened is the fact that I got so many mutuals this year that I can't wrap my mind around. I won't tag anyone here, because I might skip on someone and I don't want that to happen, but I love you all. You're making this place a lot better and honestly? Classic rock fandom is like a big family and I'm happy to be somehow a part of it. Never had I thought I will find such supportive people on Internet and yet, there you are. I'm glad I've met you all <3
That would be all for this one then. Tomorrow's one tho... Fucking hell, this will be a ride...

Hi anon! Is that true Robert once said he never forgave jimmy for not attending Karac’s funeral and being there for him when this happened? I just read from one of fans’s comment
oh, i don't know. this is very deep, personal stuff and i don't even know if bio's are reliable on this topic. in the late 70's, robert and jimmy's once close friendship started to slowly decay. robert got mad at jimmy for forcing him to do so much during the recording sessions for presence while he was still recovering from his accident in november '75 (more info on this post). then in '77 their relationship crumbled again, jimmy was really distant from everyone during their american tour and robert started feeling alone and missing home (more info). then little karac lost his life, amd jimmy flew to cairo where he ensconced himself in a luxurious hotel instead of attending the boy's funeral. robert was so mad at him that he and maureen allegedly started attributing the death of his child to jimmy's obsession with crowley:
‘Shortly after Karac died,’ said Joe Wright, a sometime employee of the band, ‘I bumped into Robert and Maureen and he says to me, “Stay away from Jimmy. He’s evil, he’s evil. It’s his fault that Karac is dead.” And Maureen is crying her eyes out.’
— From ‘Jimmy Page: The Definitive Biography’ by Chris Salewicz
in '78 they were reconciled and working on in through the outdoor together. the lyrics to carouselambra seemed to suggest otherwise, though.
