This stunning book was a gift from Francois I to his niece, Jeanne d'Albret.
This tiny handwritten prayer book (8.5 x 6.5 cm) is decorated with sixteen full-page painted illustrations and numerous illuminated initials. It can be dated thanks to the date 1532 that appears in its ornamentation.

A ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO 1ST CENTURY AD
A carnelian intaglio showing the busts of Castor and Pollux facing each other wearing their caps. Captured with a neat and precise hand this small intaglio makes up in style what it lacks in size. Orange/brown carnelian.

Seal, 1750-60
This elaborately worked object was once a seal, though it lacks any engraved insignia, and is set with simply an uncarved carnelian, which may be a replacement for an intaglio removed at an earlier date.
The ivory element is a micro-carving of two ships at a fortified port, this little scene being set within the hinged chased and coloured gold case. The gold is worked with rococo motifs with four inset enamels depicting: a male figure seated on clouds in classical armour with a trophy of arms (perhaps Mars); a seated female figure, also in military guise and also seated on clouds, whose shield shows three fleurs-de-lys (representing perhaps France); and two smaller enamels, each depicting trophies of arms.
The whole object is encased in a cylindrical shagreen case.

KING FRANÇOIS I BOOK OF HOURS (1578)
A dazzling masterpiece of the French Renaissance.
This small prayer book is bound in enamelled gold and gemstones. It was purchased in 1538 by King Francis I of France as a gift for his niece. The gems consist of carnelian (two intaglios and eight cameos), rubies (27 polished pieces), turquoise (24 cabochons) and rhodolite (one faceted stone in the book’s clasp that has been described as tourmaline since 1942). Most of the rubies were mined from the Mogok area of Burma (now Myanmar). Based on historical considerations, the turquoise could have originated from Persia or possibly Uzbekistan, and the carnelian from either India or Saxony. The faceted rhodolite from India or Sri Lanka, was most likely added to the clasp between 1842 and 1884. [view large]

The Devonshire Parure
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Devonshire Parure consists of a coronet, diadem, bandeau, comb, necklace, stomacher, and bracelet. It was commissioned by the 6th Duke of Devonshire for Countess Granville, the wife of his nephew, to wear while accompanying him to Moscow for the coronation of Tsar Alexander II in 1856.
Made and designed by C.F. Hancock with input from Sir Joseph Paxton, the parure incorporates 88 cameos and intaglios from the 2nd Duke of Devonshire’s extensive carved gem collection depicting different Tudor monarchs. It includes carnelian, amethyst, garnets, emeralds, sapphires, onyx, jacinth, lapis lazuli, plasma, sardonyx and diamonds all set in gold and enamel.
The parure has been featured in Sotheby's Treasures from Chatsworth exhibit and docuseries. When not on tour, the parure is displayed at Chatsworth House, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

Roman "Asclepius & Hygeia" Carnelian Intaglio Signet Ring
Tumblr media
A fascinating antique signet ring with an ancient Roman intaglio. The carnelian agate intaglio depicts two Greek gods- Asclepius, the god of medicine and Hygeia, his daughter and goddess of health. Asclepius carries a snake-entwined staff, while facing his daughter. The ring mount is crafted in solid 18 karat yellow gold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asclepius was the son of Apollo and mortal princess Coronis. His name- literally meaning "to cut open" as he was born by caesarean section. He was married to Epione, the goddess of pain relief and healing. Her name comes from the Greek word "epios", which means "soothing". They together had a number of children, including Hygiea. Asclepius was given to the Centaur Chiron, the wisest of all centaurs, who raised him and taught him medicine and the healing arts. Legend has it, at some point along the way, Asclepius healed a snake, which in return taught him secret knowledge... Snakes were considered divine beings that were wise and could heal and this is how his symbol came along.
Hygeia's (hygiene) classical symbol was a bowl containing a medicinal potion with the serpent of wisdom consuming it. This is the same serpent of wisdom, which appears on the staff of Aesculapius. She played an important part in her father's cult, while her father was more directly associated with healing, she was associated with the prevention of sickness and the continuation of good health.
