well I finished season four of Carmen Sandiego the world is hopeless and bleak ☹️

that was great but now I'm like ugghhhhh

Carmen looks so sad while knocking on Lupe Peligro's door. Looking down, sad little frown... she could be seconds away from meeting her mother and she doesn't look excited or hopeful or even nervous

Remember the way she said she may as well "throw darts at the map"? That's a far cry from her resolute "everyone leaves a trace" and "then let's find her" at the end of the previous season.

She doesn't have her usual spunk - Player practically has to push her to find the nearest "Carlotta Valdez"!

Did she suddenly get discouraged by the complexity of her search? Or is her nervousness manifesting as reluctance to meet her mother?

we've already talked about the limited body types in spop which didn't care enough to give us more than one (1) slightly larger character (spinerella; and as someone pointed out, it's strange that her face is still skinny, despite her being a larger woman).

but as i was looking at the characters in carmen sandiego, another thing i want to talk about is the facial features. specifically the noses.

the nose is quite possibly the most distinct feature a person can have. different nose shapes really help frame a character's face and set them apart from other characters.

and uh, spop..

does barely anything on this side either.

most of the characters seem to have the exact same nose shape, decently long-ish and straight, with the only difference being that some of their nose bridges are slightly more visible.

look at these pictures and tell me they do not have the same nose. and again, diversity isn't just different skin tones. different races and ethnicities have different facial features. and spop doesn't take this into consideration at all.

the only character who seems to have a different nose shape is scorpia, whose nose is larger and slightly hooked (not even hooked, it's just like curving outwards instead of inwards).

and glimmer used to have a slightly shorter button-type nose when she was younger, but in s4, they changed that so her nose looks exactly the same as everyone else's.

and you know, this might seem like a nitpicky thing to complain about, but it's a genuine flaw in character design. the best way to create distinct characters is to give them distinct nose shapes. otherwise they're all practically the same character, just with different hair and skin color. and that's what it seems like in spop, because there's barely any distinction in the characters' other features too, like their eyes and mouths.

and if you want to say that "it's because of the artstyle!" or "they had restrictions!" (which makes absolutely no sense in this scenario, but i've still seen fans use that as a free ticket for any situation) let's take a look at gravity falls, a show that was released 6 years before spop was, was known for getting unnecessary restrictions from the execs for the stupidest reasons, and had a distinct cartoonish artstyle.

oh, would you look at that! they still all have very distinct nose shapes! and unique facial features in general, and even different body types?

and you know, you could say that there are other shows that don't pay attention to facial features just like spop, but i guess the reason why spop specifically bothers me so much is because of the emphasis they put on representing diversity.

if they really want to make the characters look like real people and not like "barbie dolls" as so many of the fans lovingly call the 80s designs, they should have committed to it. they should have done some research on people of color and looked at all the different distinct features that set each race and ethnicity apart from one another. instead they just gave everyone slightly different skin tones and called it a day.

Today's topic- the change in animation in LMK

I know like the majority of the Fandom has probably been sent to the ER after season 5 animation (or the emotion couldn't tell) but I think someone said that the animation slightly changed from like the Pilot to s 1-3, somewhere there, so like 3 different animation at this point, maybe??

Alright here's my thoughts

AGGAGAGAGGGGHHHHHHHH

Okay for real this time-

When I first watched LMK, I fell IN LOVE with the fluid motions, the active movement, the anime-style Influence, the exaggeration, the most random fun moments, pop ups, yse of environment, angles, camera movement, facial and body expression and other stuff I don't know the name of

Now as someone who's never watched Anime, please don't kill me, I don't exactly know what that looks like, but try going anywhere on the internet without tripping down the stairs and falling into the basement of ANIME

Also, I'm used to more rigid, beautiful backrounds, great lighting, or basic show animation. Such as Trollhunters, Amphibia, The Owl House, Big City Greens, Ninjago, How to Train your Dragon, Carmen Sandiego and others

So as you can see, this was new to me, and I fricken loved it

Now I can tell there definitely has been change from the Pilot to season 4, more refined, less sloppy

So, when season 5-

Oh dear, I love you Wild Brain, I really do, Ninjago and Carmen Sandiego WERE BEAUTIFUL

BUT AHHHHHH

I will say this, this is a new artstyle, they need practice, and I'm sure it'll improve, but this is not that time it's time to CRITISIZE GET THE RED PEN (maybe I am an English Teacher)

Remember what I said about what I love about LMK animation? Okay now throw it out the window into the Fire of FRICK THIS

Now I will say, they used some angles pretty well, such as using the environment to show emotion/tension, like when it would Pam out and something was blocking the two characters, from Wukong to Macaque to the poll in the Pagado and then a mountain between MK and Wukong near the end- look for its cool- someone pointed it out here on Tumblr can't remember name sorry

2nd, the expressions look really typical, like I miss the shot eyebrow from Wukong, or the the pathetic puppy eyes of MK, or the :3 for Mei, or the furious faces of Pigsy, the sparkly pure joy of Sandy, the chaotic gremlinness of MO, the evil Edit maker smiles of Macaque (I've seen your tiktoks) ALL THE LITTLE EXTRA THAT MADE THE EXPRESSIONS AND HUMOR/TENSION/EMOTION BETTER

3rd, the movements. Seen especially in the second episode when they escape. It's just, so basic running, like compare them running to MK's run in s2 running from the LBD and then when he ran in s4 away from the Ink scroll. Just so much more fear and dread. Also talking bout LBD, her voice actor? Phenomenal as always? Her movements and how they animate her? She seems more like a red headed doll with button eyes than the horror of something like FNAF(haven't played FNAF so can't really compare) what I'm saying is she seemed less huanting, a weary, fear-instilling, and bone-chilling(shut up let me pun) presence this time around, which really makes the scene less dramatic, but the camera angles, voice acting, and some animation still make it somewhat good.

Okay, this post is getting long and I can rant all day, and that's not even with me rewatching the show to pick it apart, someone probably already has good for them I'll look for it👍

In conclusion, comes of more dull, simple, rough, and rushed. S5 story, which has some problems, really hit deep in the last few episodes, mostly MK and Wukong, and if the studio beforehand continued animating, then I think it would have been a masterpiece, really sad to see the wasted potential

I know it's a new studio, but I wish they took more time to practice and learn, and maybe do it on a season that wasn't like the big reveal and end (I'd say a more happy season but let's be honest the Trauma train ain't stopping for a LONG TIME)

so, I guess I'll give it a 4/10, points for using the backround to storytell, still got some great angles, some funny bits here and there (the soldiers where a joy), action scenes were somewhat good, not a lot can't judge more, and pity points because I know they're still learning

Because I picked up a few too many details whilst sorting out the show’s canon timeline (and because I really did want to stick with canon-only for that timeline, as fun as fanon can be) we get to extend the list!

12. Carmen doesn’t hate V.I.L.E.’s instant imitation rice simply because it tastes terrible. Carmen hates that rice because V.I.L.E. used the academy cafeteria as a means to test their product on a fresh and unsuspecting batch of trainees every year, which resulted in Black Sheep being familiar with multiple iterations of the stuff—unlike the regular students, who only had to endure it once.

13. Ivy likes to sketch and sometimes paints but has been mostly self-taught outside of art class during high school. Zack is the only one who sees anything of what she draws. As a result, he tends to give her art supplies—pencils, notebooks, fancy markers—whenever a gifting occasion arises, instead of the power tools everybody else thinks she wants. Not that Ivy doesn’t appreciate power tools, but the art supplies... feel more like something special, because she gets to use them purely for herself.

14. Coach Brunt reads romance novels. Florid romance novels. Which Black Sheep eventually found and also read, Brunt’s hiding place for them not being quite secret enough to avoid discovery by a curious nine- or ten-year-old. She then took her ensuing list of questions directly to Dr. Bellum as the adult most likely to give her a straight answer.

15. Luckily Dr. Bellum is one of the few members of V.I.L.E. with a large and still-extant family, including any number of nieces/nephews/much younger cousins, and takes the same scientific approach towards explaining the facts of life as she does most things. Thus she was better prepared than perhaps any other faculty member to be confronted by a precocious Black Sheep bearing that list of very awkward questions.

16. Sheena grew up living at or just above the poverty line, and started her criminal career as a shoplifter. Mostly clothes, occasionally jewellery—taking all the pretty things that life refused to give her—but without any true eye for gold versus glitter. Even after becoming a V.I.L.E. operative, she is still more attentive to the appearance of value (like that cat statue in the Cairo marketplace) than actual value.

17. The Driver was the opposite. Born into the upper echelons of society, she was eventually disowned by her family for a combination of refusing to give up street racing (which she turned to after that same family deemed professional racing to be an unseemly career choice) and refusing to marry the (similarly upper-class, similarly wealthy) man they had picked out for her.

18. Dokuso was the daughter of a high-ranking yakuza, essentially a mob princess, until her family lost a war with an opposing syndicate. Although not directly involved in the matter, the gang Shadow-san joined was among the lower branches of that rival organization. Both Dokuso and Shadow-san are aware of the other’s past ties, as well as respective position within those former hierarchies. So it stung especially hard when Dokuso learned that Shadow-san, a first-generation yakuza grunt who'd never even risen out of the shatei, had somehow became a faculty member whilst she, born to power and privilege, remained a mere operative.

19. Shadow-san found Dr. Bellum to be the most tolerable of the other faculty because—lack of ethics review in her research aside—her intelligence and academic nature reminded him of his brother. He also got along well with Cookie Booker, albeit in part because the longstanding animosity between her and Professor Maelstrom was an easy way out of interacting with the other man.

20. ‘Carlotta Valdez’ is likely as much of an alias as ‘Vera Cruz’; whatever her real name, Carmen’s mom was simply too good at avoiding camera angles during her dates with Dexter to not have some more-than-civilian experience. The neighbour in Veracruz witnessed her living there for a year, which means that much is probably true, but Julia’s findings were based on paper evidence—evidence that could be faked.

21. Recruitment for V.I.L.E. generally worked through a sponsorship approach. Senior operatives (like Marta Contrera) were encouraged to investigate any particularly talented young criminals they came across (like Sonia) for trainee potential, and received a bonus if their candidate successfully graduated from the academy to become another operative for V.I.L.E. The Mechanic sponsored The Driver, and Cookie Booker sponsored Dash Haber.

22. Trainees had to be at least nineteen to enter the academy—a rule that was bent for Black Sheep—but V.I.L.E. had an unspoken policy against taking anyone over the age of twenty-nine. In addition to maximizing how long they’d get a return on their investment in an operative’s training, most people in their thirties have started forming the kinds of attachments (both personal and professional) that could lead to someone noticing if they dropped off the grid for a solid year. Or forever, given that V.I.L.E. wouldn’t always have had the option of using Dr. Bellum’s memory-device to deal with failed students.

23. Dr. Bellum, incidentally, was one of the very few exceptions to that tacit upper limit. She was in her early thirties when V.I.L.E. invited her to attend their academy, making her the oldest trainee to ever enroll.

24. Next to Carmen, Paperstar was V.I.L.E.’s youngest recruit. She just barely squeaked over the age minimum by turning nineteen mere days before the academy’s school year began. She and Carmen were therefore the same age during Carmen’s holdover year, and significantly younger than anyone else in their class.

Some Carmen Sandiego head-canons, in no particular order:

1. Coach Brunt’s first name is Gloria.

2. Everybody at the academy thinks that that faculty has their favourites, and for the most part that’s true, but Shadow-san has no idea why anyone thought Tigress was his and Countess Cleo doesn’t like any of the students enough to have one. She tolerates Dash Haber because he’s the prettiest. 

3. Graham has always introduced himself as such. Carmen was the one to shorten it to ‘Gray’, and the others picked it up from her.

4. Boris (the shorter Cleaner) is sweet on Cookie Booker. She is completely unaware.

5. Countess Cleo was the most recent elevation to faculty before Shadow-san. Dr. Bellum’s change of hairstyle from bride-of-Frankenstein to actually-pretty-flattering is a direct result of her influence.

6. The academy accepts up to forty students per year; that doesn’t mean there’s forty graduates. Only about sixteen people looked to have made it in Carmen’s original year. Those that fail or are expelled are normally mind-wiped and sent home like Gray. The faculty made an exception for Carmen, another decision Shadow-san opposed.

7. Carmen didn’t know, at least about the mind-wiping. There would just be students who weren’t there the next day.

8. Before they were Tigress and Crackle, Sheena and Graham had a thing in the academy. That’s why she went along with the water balloon prank and didn’t put up more of a fuss about Gray getting them all saddled with detention on Carmen’s behalf. It’s also part of why she has such a grudge against Carmen, because Tigress blames her for Crackle’s dismissal.

9. Lady Dokuso lied about poisoning the chopsticks. She coats the outside of her umbrella with a skin-permeable toxin, which is why she used it to fight Shadow-san. But it takes a little time to work, so she’s not about to tell anyone when they were really exposed to it.

10. Ivy and Zack aged out of the foster care system. Their mom died at least ten years ago, and their dad was never in the picture. 

And last, but not least-

11. Carmen and Player can pun back and forth to each other all day. Literally. It drives the rest of the crew batty, but there’s nothing they can do to make the pair stop. Any reaction only encourages them.

ANYWAY HERES THREE WAYS ON HOW I WOULD REWRITE GRAY'S WRITING IN THE STORY

Okay so if you don't know I'm a bit critical on the handling of gray cuz there is sm potential and some decent execution in the series, as with Carmen sandiego's writing in general which fumbled hard in the end

Anyway I decided to think of three rewrites that would do better with writing gray's arc, starting from a total refresh from the start of the series to whatever was left in the final season

Season 1: why write character when u can slap on amensia instead

So if I were in charge of writing gray with what was set up in pilot and where his arc would go ... I might ditch the amnesia all together. Amnesia is already quite the narrative and character weight, and to give it to such a conflicted character like gray only adds to how much of a mess he is (love him tho). Gray starts in the first episode complex enough, even more so than the other characters I'd argue:

He's a character working for vile and clearly disregards any sort of moral compass, making him so clearly opposed to Carmen. But due to their past bond, he simply can't pursue his own self interest like he normally would, hesitating and stalling his decision by allowing Carmen to speak her side. It's quickly shown and immediately makes him compelling.

But then a cartoon anvil drops on his head and just gives him amnesia, rendering his screen time for the next three seasons basically replaced with a different character

So solution? Ditch the amnesia plot and just pursue what makes him interesting. Keep him conflicted by acting as a sorta regular vile operative like tigress, but have him gradually throughout his appearances having a change of heart

... No not in morals lol, but in his final conviction in hurting carmen. which was his "redeeming moment" in season 4, where he prioritized Carmen over himself and refused to hurt her himself and then later, not stand by to see her get hurt.

They can be more lighthearted capers like in early seasons where team red and gray have to personally work together, both very reluctant. In this time, Carmen can feel some melancholy and nostalgia for their previous, uncomplicated relationship while gray may start to have doubts in his loyalty.

That way u don't rob gray of his agency throughout while still hitting the main emotional beats. He will only be betraying vile likely on the end for his selfish reason to help Carmen over his allkes, solidifying his gray morality

Season 3: Why is there a season long Halloween special in my Carmen Sandiego show?

This is going to painfully unlikely, but it is a quick fix all things considered.

Season 3 to me is the biggest detriment to the show overall, wasting time as well as introducing unnecessary plot lines (Julia and chase breaking up for a bit, it was maybe needed but not at all well executed), all the while forgetting other plot threads (Carmen's search for her mom and her betrayal of acme, vile supposedly getting even more against Carmen)

But it seems it was meant to be some harmless Halloween special to entertain fans ... All the while putting some plot details that can't be skipped over ... (ie Julia and chase split)

Anyway let's say we're approaching season 3, and it's meant to be all spooky and stuff. We've already written two seasons of graham stuff so now what? Well just make the side plot of s3 abt gray recovering his memories, essentially moving his plot in the first half of s4 back to s3

There is some horror in gray's situation at the start of s4, so maybe it can run parallel to the general Halloween vibes of the arc, but where carmen's arc is more light hearted spookiness, gray's can work as a serious plot beat in between (also gives vile more to than just sitting around in costumes)

Change the s3 finale to be more like the Himalayan episode, where somehow Carmen is confronting gray, however brief, and gray reaffirms his alliegence back to vile. That way s4 has gray concretely back at vile, reducing how back-to-back his switch ups are in s4

Not elegant but can keep interest in s3 afloat (at least for me)

Season 4: welp we're out of time ...

Okay now we're in too deep. We've written it where gray has to both regain his memories (can't have him be an amnesiac forever lol) and then return to vile to affirm his moral "grayness" but ALSO ALSO redeem himself by snitching vile to acme ... All in a shortened season

Oops ...

Truthfully it's such little screentime left idk what they really had left if they wanna maintain gray's allegiance to both vile and carmen

So ditch it! Instead of having it during the Himalaya confrontation end with gray choosing vile, have him choose team red

Have it where during the reunion between the two and their ensuing conversation, gray expresses way more reluctance in his choice (and def not piss Carmen off by unintentionally undermining her lol) so Carmen won't immediately choose to blow up the building. Have her instead acknowledge gray's choice to remain in vile but offer him a card or something with contact info, something like that. Gray takes it and without it being said, it's clear he is taking her side

the two taking cover as Carmen explodes the building. But before Maelstrom can appear, Carmen takes her leave, leaving gray behind to seem like he chose vile.

Gray will hide the note and play along, essentially being the mole in vile for team red. This way, when Carmen gets kidnapped, gray can immediately give team red the intel, making sure team red doesn't get reduced to this like confused wreck that they are in the actual show.

It also avoids gray getting involved with acme again, and since I think Carmen took acme's files or something at the end of s2, they can have ivy, as the tech girl, make the memory device herself. It helps give way more agency to Zach, ivy, player, and shadowsan since now they know in advance what happened to Carmen, making them way more proactive.

Change the finale from there but I think it better balances out gray as well as the other characters

Okay so it's easy for me to say all this now in retrospect (and maybe I'm misremembering details...) but yeah I just felt like there were many ways this show, with it's limited time, could've been more sensible in its choices rather than wasting them. If the writing for even one character was tighter, I feel like a lot of other plot beats would've fit in better too

Or I'm just overly fixated on gray who knows lol also im too lazy to revise sorry if this is just garble

To cap off this pride month, a few of my queer headcanons for Carmen Sandiego (2019) characters!

I headcanon Player as a trans boy and Carmen as a trans woman! I also definitely think Carmen's sapphic but I don't have a more specific identity in mind for her.

Julia is a lesbian ofc. Her shirt is inspired by this retro lesbian shirt! If I had seen it before inking I would have made it an actual shirt with a collar and all but alas I saw it too late.

And I headcanon Devineaux as a trans man. His jacket was heavily based on this vintage jacket, obviously with the colors reworked. That's his new lucky coat probably.

(I have headcanons for other characters but since they're less fixed I won't talk about them here)

i was SHOCKED by how good this special was the first time I played through it. I had just joined the fandom, I was scrounging for content in the waiting-for-s3-desert, and boom- there was a SPECIAL? why didn't anyone tell me?

anyway, this is always super fun to do. I've done every single route multiple times and recorded all of them too for the illegal stash but theres nothing quite like playing it.

in the very first episode (and african ice) devineax mentions an amusement park in shanghai. wonder if the two are related, or if VILE just has a shit ton of properties in there?

the show is called carmen sandiego but not even the titular main character, who has devoted EVERYTHING we see of her in the show to taking down vile, takes it down. Not even her found family takes it down in her place, to show that the bonds forged with people outside of your controlling family can leave such an amazing impact. NOT EVEN ACME TAKES VILE DOWN. like i wouldve preferred maybe julia and chase going behind chief's back to use acme resources to do their own investigation, but still, to not even have the organization built on stopping vile get that moment is insane.

hell maybe even carmen's old classmates defecting slowly could be worth something thematically

yeah no lets have the guy who was literally

a) meant to be the narrative vehicle for carmen to info dump the backstory in the first episode and intended to be written out

b) was bonked in the head with amnesia and only made a brief reappearance in one ep is s1 and an ep in s2 and no speaking lines in "s3"

c) had a focus in the first half of s4 which ended with him picking vile in the end only to have another change of heart the moment he returns as an antag in the final two eps

be the guy responsible for leaking vile to acme. no high stake rescue mission or final heist or deep investigation. nope just some guy tattle tale-ing lol to bring down an entire criminal organization.
