So I’ve spent the past 21 hours listening to ‘Talking to Yourself’ by Carly Rae Jepsen and little else, and I just realize how much it parallels ‘I Bet You Think About Me’ by Taylor Swift, and imo is an infinitely better take on the concept for all the reasons CRJ is a superior artist. ‘I Bet You Think About Me’ is a song I dislike because of its pettiness and it’s presumption. Like it’s the kind of Taylor Swift song that makes people not like Taylor Swift because it’s so self-indulgent and superior. ‘I bet you’re thinking about me all the time. I bet everything reminds you of me.’ There’s even a line about how ‘I bet you know the last time things felt meaningful was when you were with me’ or something like that idk I’ve only listened to the song twice bc I have such a distaste for it. It is intentionally like that, it’s meant to be vindictive and self-aggrandizing, but ultimately for me, that attitude in a song always just belays a deeper insecurity. ‘I bet you think about me’ is an attitude of false superiority, a perspective of someone who is obviously still thinking about the other person, still betting about the other person, and needing to still feel like they’re handing the breakup better, constructing a certainty that the other person is doing worse, missing them more than she does. But Taylor swift doesn’t have the nuance to really tackle that complexity, especially not in the Red era where some of her songs are still very much about winning breakups and being the Right One in the end.
Meanwhile, Queen Carly takes the same idea, but simultaneously captures both the self-indulgence of vindictiveness and the insecurity, simply by reframing the idea as a question. ‘Are you thinking of me when you’re with somebody else?’ ‘Do you talk to me when you’re talking to yourself?’ She doesn’t know. She’s asking, and it’s a damning question for both parties. You might be thinking of her still, but she also wants to know. And then in the bridge there’s a double whammy of ‘are you thinking of me?’ ‘Does it kill you that you’re thinking of me?’ There’s a slight desperation in the first question, and then that pettiness in the second. Hell in the pre-chorus she says, ‘I’ll never let you be’, a phrase that captures both you not able to stop thinking about her, but also putting herself in the subject, as in I also can’t let go. She even described it as not a revenge song bc Carly songs are always deeper than one emotion and always have an element of insecurity and deep emotional self-honesty to them. The simplest answer is never enough, there’s always so much more complexity that ‘I’m winning this breakup’.
And it’s a fucking banger.
#carly rae jepsen#talking to yourself#stream the loneliest time#crj#taylor swift#also I know that Taylor Swift writes more than breakup songs#I like a lot of Taylor swift songs#and I think her ability to create more complicated emotional situations are on full display in her more recent albums#stan Carly Rae Jepsen

georgia warr
never been in love - gatlin
a song about wanting to be in love but not being able to be in love, which is very fitting for georgia’s initial situation. i’ve put this at the beginning of this playlist because - spoiler alert - the last song on here is also called never been in love and i think these two songs symbolise georgia’s journey in a very mint way. also, the first line of this song is “that boy from georgia was so sweet” which i think is pretty funny
somebody to love - queen
the title says it all. georgia wants to find somebody to love. i mean, she’s already found them, but we’ll get to that later.
paradise - coldplay
georgia is a big dreamer and yearner and i think this song really encapsulates that on so many levels. i mean “when she was just a girl / she expected the world / but it flew away from her reach / so she ran away in her sleep” that’s georgia !
tous les garçons et les filles - françoise hardy
french song because i’m ~quirky~ but this song is basically about seeing everyone else be in relationships and feeling lonely/wanting one for yourself
waiting for love - avicii
georgia is a hopeless romantic, but she’s still waiting for her own grand romance (she still hasn’t realised that the “love” she’s “waiting for” has already “come around”)
dear no one - tori kelly
georgia “i want someone to be in love with but there is no one” warr, at least at the beginning of the book
chaos - miki fiki
this song can be interpreted with various themes of the book in mind such as yearning for something you don’t have, feeling lonely, emotional turmoil, etc, it’s a banger
i walk a little faster - fiona apple
highjacked from @kindaorangey’s loveless playlist (they’ve done a great rundown here). this song has similar themes to dear no one, anticipating that romance will come to you, but it hasn’t, despite how hard you chase it, how fast you walk
when - dodie
shoutout to @drarrystar for recommending this song to me because so many of the lines reflect georgia to the core. just look up the lyrics and you’ll agree
deeper - ella eyre
“cause i’m scared, i can’t lie / i don’t feel the same inside / i can’t decide if i have the heart to confess” georgia thinks she can learn to love jason romantically if she just digs a little deeper
loneliness for love - lovelytheband
“anything at all not to feel alone / anything at all just to feel whole / ‘cause i keep mistaking loneliness for love”
a little more - alessia cara
“there you are with your college friends / you played in a marching band / i can't help but wish i knew you then / but i guess i know you now // it looks as if i've stumbled right into the palm of your hand // hey, you / hey, mr. knock on my door / i'm sorry that I've been emotions galore / am i crazy for wanting a little bit more? / a little more of you” georgia about sunil. she needs their guidance and wishes he’d been there for her earlier.
stuck in california - rightfield
a song about feeling alone and alienated by everyone and everything around you, and waiting for your “stars to align”, which fits georgia if you ask me
seven - taylor swift
georgiapip song !!!!!! it’s also about how alienating it can be to grow up and lose your childhood innocence, and i have a lot of thoughts about a very specific brand of growing pains that come with being aspec, but that’s a topic for another day
te amo - rihanna
this is a song about having someone be romantically in love with you and the heartbreak that comes from not being able to reciprocate those feelings --> georgia about jason
love love love - of monsters and men
same as te amo. it hits especially hard when you do love the other person so fucking much
ceiling won’t break - finish ticket
this song gives me georgia’s emotional turmoil vibes, also the line “i see no lights ‘cause the lights weren’t aimed at me” can be interpreted in a “cupid’s arrows didn’t hit georgia” way if you get what i mean
lack of emotion - skott
once again we are dealing with themes of not being able to feel the emotions that you “““““should”““““ feel for someone
let me go - hailee steinfeld
another song about georgia and jason’s (romantic) relationship and how it was doomed to fail from the beginning so she hopes he can let her go
i’m so tired - lauv, troye sivan
i’m just thinking about that line in loveless where georgia resentfully realises how many songs are about romantic love. she’s just so tired
crush culture - conan gray
and another song about being resentful of our romance-obsessed society, which georgia certainly is plenty of times throughout the book
home - ella eyre
christmas break time babey !!!! georgia has reached her low point and she’s going home
i love my car - belle & sebastain
“I pressed a cold hand against my car, which was as far up the drive of our house as it could get. I’d missed my car.” - loveless by alice oseman, celebrating all kinds of love since 2020
i’ve never written a song about a boy - eva westphal
this was actually recommended to me by @michaelholdenn for this playlist ! a song about the liberation that comes with not having to force attraction anymore
this is home - cavetown
i think months ago some ask told alice that this is a loveless song and i agree
why can’t we be friends - jordy searcy
this is about georgia’s strained relationship with pip and jason after the bailey ball and how she wishes they could just be friends again, the way they were all throughout their childhood
chiquitita - abba
okay fuckers THIS is literally the LOVELIEST song about friendship and wanting to be there for your loved ones and i’m sure georgia relates
open up - matt simons
“you’re hard to talk to with that wall around you” vs. “rooney had a solid brick wall round some part of her that nobody was allowed to know.” basically, georgia wants rooney to open up to her
just fucking let me love you - lowen
okay, yes, this song is very gay, but i think it can be applied to georgiarooney too ! the frustration this song expresses of wanting to shake someone and scream at them to just fucking let you love them is definitely shown in loveless when it comes to those two
less than i do - the band camino
georgia about pip. she hopes that pip will forgive her eventually. i mean look at the line “i still have your denim jacket” in the song - georgia still has pip’s jacket too, it’s perfect !!!
friends will be friends - queen
if loveless taught us anything it’s that friends sure fuckin will be friends
stick with me - olly murs
“we all get lonely / trying to find a place where we should be / trying to find someone to set us free / there are times a friend is all you need” you know when alice said that every character in the book feels “loveless” in some way at one point or another, but they all learn the value and importance of platonic love? yeah.
your song - moulin rouge
“and then, with three accompanists, i stood on a boat on the river wear and sang ‘your song’ - the version specifically from moulin rouge - to pip quintana, who didn’t yet know me as well as i wished she did, but despite that, was one of my favourite people i had ever met.”
wherever i live - alessia cara
you know the scene after georgia leaves pip and rooney to their first kiss? yeah, this song really reflects that mindset of half loneliness, half acceptance to me. listen to it.
take time - honest men
accepting your identity takes time ! even by the end of loveless there’s still days when georgia wishes she wasn’t aroace and the book presents this in an amazing and properly nuanced way !
die alone - finneas
"you asked me, ‘do you wanna die alone / or watch it all burn down together?’ / i said i’d rather try to hold on to you forever” this song is very much georgiarooney - finding each other in their darkest of days and watching everything they thought they knew (amatonormativity) burn down. together.
no lover - jetty bones
the next few songs are basically just one aro anthem after the next. this is another recommendation from @michaelholdenn - “maybe i don’t need a lover, i just need the friend”
solo - carly rae jepsen
highjacked from @kindaorangey’s loveless playlist. amazing anthem about how it’s okay to be single and how romantic love isn’t as fulfilling as society makes it out to be anyway
trust my lonely - alessia cara
i think in georgia’s case this song can be interpreted as her learning to finally let go of her pre-conceived notions of what love is and what she should want, her learning to “trust her lonely”, though lonely here just means romance-less
love is a town - josh gilligan
“if [romantic] love is a town then i’m passing through" yeah, romance is not for georgia and she’s starting to accept that.
new romantics - taylor swift
the loveless gang is the new romantics !!! they’re redefining love and romance !!!
team - lorde
“and everyone's competing for a love they won't receive / 'cause what this palace wants is release” anyway, let’s go found family song
wild things - alessia cara
now, i don’t know if alessia cara is queer but I DARE YOU to look at the lyrics of wild things and not tell me that this is the ULTIMATE queer anthem about found family and saying fuck you to respectability politics. i DARE you. anyway, loveless is also about found family and saying fuck you to respectability politics so it’s very fitting
never been in love - will jay
full circle babey !!!!! this is THE aro anthem so obviously i had to add it and comparing the “never been in love / and it’s all good” to the “never been in love / and i fucking hate that i couldn’t make it past a crush” message from the first song we can really reflect georgia’s journey of self-acceptance in loveless which i love a lot
#oof my playlists are loooooong#anyway shoutout to thunder kindaorangey for coming up with the concept of a playlist masterpost ily dude#playlist#osemanverse playlist#long post

across the hall • part one
this is a tyrus college au i guess and i have no idea where i’m going with it so we’ll see
It is entirely probable that Buffy will end up committing murder in the next ten minutes if somebody doesn’t do something about the noise. It’s a Wednesday night and the gang is clustered in Jonah and Cyrus’ room in an attempt to have a study session before midterms. It’s only an attempt because it’s nearly impossible to focus on flashcards and notes when the room across the hall is blasting loud drum and bass music at full volume. Again.
Cyrus and Jonah have had to deal with this so often by now that they’ve given up even trying to stop it. Every time they’ve (well, actually it’s mostly been Jonah because Cyrus has no desire to be involved in any kind of hallway confrontation) visited the guys across the hall it has resulted in about two minutes of peace before the music and the boisterous laughter sound up again like a siren calling out to a sea of annoyingly rambunctious skater kids. Buffy and Andi aren’t much better off than the two of them, they live just a couple of doors down the hall. Like Jonah, Buffy has made multiple trips to tell them to be quiet. Unlike Jonah, she has ended up in door-slamming arguments with the irritating occupants of room 201 far too many times to count. She hates them. Cyrus has never actually met them, but he’s caught glimpses of the boys - Reed and TJ as they others have informed him - and listened to his friends rant about how inconsiderate they are so much that he’s resigned himself to being the only reasonable one in the group. This is mostly because he’s the only one who refuses to encourage homicide as a means to end a dorm feud.
“I’m just going to go over there,” Buffy announces, throwing her pen down after several minutes of forgetting what she was writing and trying not to let her eye twitch in frustration. Cyrus has been waiting for her to snap. Her tether gets shorter and shorter every time this happens. Tonight might be a new record; they’ve only made it half an hour into their work.
“And do what?” Andi asks from where she and Amber are lounging on Jonah’s bed surrounded by a variety of colourful notebooks. “If you try talking to Reed again you’re just going to get mad.”
“I think you might actually give Michael an aneurysm if he has to intervene again,” Marty points out. Michael is their RA and a very good one at that. He cares about the students in the building and he works hard, but he’s so tired of everybody’s shit all of the time. Cyrus thinks Marty is probably right about the aneurysm thing. Michael’s broken up too many of Buffy and Reed’s disagreements at this point.
Buffy huffs. “Well, what else are we going to do? They don’t listen to anyone else.”
“They don’t listen to you either.”
“They will if I break down their door.”
“Destruction of property is illegal,” Cyrus sighs. “Ad you’d probably end up being the one to pay for it. I’ll go.”
Everyone stares at him. Cyrus Goodman? Willingly walking into conflict? It’s practically unheard of.
“What makes you think they’ll listen to you?” Buffy asks.
Cyrus lifts one shoulder in a casual shrug. “They’ve never met me. Maybe I’ll have more of a chance to reason with them. When they see you guys it’s basic instinct for them to argue with you, and I’m less likely to get frustrated and lose my cool.”
“He’s got a point,” Andi says. “Cyrus has never tried to punch either of them before.”
“They both deserved it,” Buffy grumbles. Marty and Jonah both give her a nod and a comforting pat. Cyrus tries not to roll his eyes at them. When it comes to being overdramatic his friends are truly accomplished at it. He pushes up from his place on the floor and struggles to his feet before stumbling out into the hallway. The others send him off with a round of encouraging words and advice, most of which he ignores because he has zero desire to get himself punched by a jock during this process.
He has to rap on their door a couple of times in order to be loud enough for the guys inside to hear him but after a moment the door suddenly swings open. He knows it’s Reed stood smirking in front of him right now because Marty had once joked about sneaking into 201 in the night and shaving off the golden locks that he was so proud of. They flop down above his eyes and Cyrus is immediately reminded of the boy bands he used to have postered on his bedroom walls at home.
“Nice pyjamas,” Reed greets him with a raised eyebrow. Cyrus covers folds his arms and covers the front of his shirt defensively. It’s a pink Carly Rae Jepsen shirt that Jonah had bought him as a joke (he likes to tease him about the music on his playlist a lot) and it’s extremely comfortable, thank you very much. It doesn’t quite match the grey plaid pyjama pants or bunny slippers that he’s wearing, but they’re his pyjamas. He’s not exactly trying to impress anybody with them.
“Thanks,” He says shortly, and then winces. He was aiming not to come off too annoyed at the start to give them a chance to have an actual conversation. He was starting to see why the others got riled up so easily doing this.
“So can I help you with something, or…?”
“Oh, uh. Yeah, actually. I’m Cyrus. I live across the hall,” Cyrus gestures to their bedroom door behind him. “And I was wondering if you could-”
“Wait,” Reed interrupts. “You live in two oh two?”
Cyrus nods.
“Does that mean you’re friends with Beck and Driscoll?” He fights not to roll his eyes. Aren’t they too old for the addressing people by their last names thing?
“Yes.”
“Wow, what’s it like to be surrounded by crazy people all the time?” Reed grins.
Cyrus takes a deep breath. “Look, could you just turn the music down a little or something? We’re trying to study. Midterms are coming up and-”
“REED!” A sudden voice further into the room interrupts. “Who’s at the door, man?!”
Reed kicks the door open further in response and it swings back to reveal the rest of the room. Similarly, to Cyrus and Jonah’s room, there are two beds on either side. Both are unmade. Clothes litter the floor and there are half empty takeout containers on the desks. A small cluster of guys are sprawled across the room, a couple of them playing video games and two others messing around on a laptop. They’re all looking at Reed and Cyrus.
“Two-oh-two can’t resist paying us visits,” Reed replies airily and waves towards Cyrus.
One of the guys with the laptop, the one who had asked who was at the door, looks surprised by Cyrus’ presence in the doorway. Cyrus is pretty sure this must be Reed’s roommate TJ because he gets a vague feeling of familiarity when he looks at him and he looks far too comfortable in his sweatpants to be visiting.
“You’re new,” He says to Cyrus, then clicks something on the laptop and the volume of the music drops significantly.
“He’s Cyrus, apparently,” Reed says with raised eyebrows. He and TJ exchange a look that Cyrus cannot decipher but gives him the impression they’re almost mentally communicating about something significant to them.
TJ leans back on his elbows to regard Cyrus. “Where’re the military boss dream team? Isn’t it usually their job to come tell us off?”
“I thought it would be safer for everyone involved if they stayed in our room,” Cyrus replies dryly. “Murder is illegal in every state, y’know.”
To his immense surprise, TJ throws back his head and laughs at that. Even Reed chuckles a little.
“Well, since you asked so nicely,” TJ says. “And you’re thinking of our safety and all, I guess we could keep it down.
“Really?”
Reed nods in agreement and chimes in with a surprisingly reasonable tone. “I mean, you’re right. People are studying for midterms. We didn’t realise we were actually being that loud, so… sure.”
Cyrus eyes them in suspicion. It has never ever been this easy for the others to get these guys to be quiet. There has to be a catch.
“You wanna stay and hang out?” TJ asks, catching him off guard. “We’re gonna order pizza.”
“If I say no will you go back to being loud?”
“No. It’s just an offer.”
In a brief moment of what Cyrus likes to think of as ‘dorm induced insanity’, he actually considers staying. The room, despite its teenage messiness, seems like a relatively homey place to be and the guys that fill it don’t come off nearly as unfriendly as he thought they would. TJ even looks a little bit hopeful, though Cyrus may be imagining that.
“No thanks,” he says. “I’ve got studying to do.”
“Oh, right. ‘Course. Well, good luck on your midterms then.”
“Thanks,” he says and turns back towards his own door. He feels oddly unsettled by the whole thing. If he’s honest with himself he thought he’d probably either get laughed at by the boys for asking them to be quiet or he’d end up letting Buffy act on her rage. This is not how he expected their interaction to go at all.
“Night, Goodman,” Reed says as he closes the door.
“G’night?” Cyrus mumbles back, still processing the whole encounter.
He doesn’t even realise until the next morning that he never actually told them his last name.

Dedicated / We’re Meant To Know Each Other: a delirious 6k word long post about Carly Rae Jepsen songs, Brotzly, and the link between the two
AN INTRODUCTION
Hello, I’m here to prove that every song on Carly Rae Jepsen’s new album, Dedicated, can be, be it tangentially or very connected-y, a Brotzly song.
When I say “connected” I really mean, “We’re (the song and Brotzly) meant to know each other!”, and, conversely, when I say “tangentially” I mean “I saw four letters in this song, Dirk and Todd are four letter names, SOLVED IT! DID IT!” In short, this post, will flail wildly between being very put together and grasping at straws, all because I am determined to match every song on this album to Brotzly.
Before embarking on this journey, I first need to explain the structure of this piece. There are, in total, 15 songs on Dedicated. I will present these songs not in the order of how they appear in the album. This is for two reasons. First, the original sequence of the album is clear in its beautiful and masterful narrative progression of a (in the most simplest terms, because the narrative progression of Dedicated is a whole other delirious post in itself) relationship not going very well. While I would die for CRJ, you would have to hold me at gunpoint to present that narrative onto Brotzly. To keep my heart intact, I will be treating each song as an individual song, and not in how they relate to one another. The second reason I will not be presenting the songs in album order is because I have a different order in mind, one more focused on Brotzly. Specifically, I will be matching every single song to fitting Brotzly moments that occurred in canon, chronologically.
Without further ado, let me jump right in.
CARLY RAE JEPSEN WROTE THESE SONGS SPECIFICALLY SO THAT I COULD MATCH THEM TO CANON BROTZLY MOMENTS
SEASON 1
SCENE: “Hiiiii!”
SONG: Want You In My Room [audio] [lyrics]
Alright, I’m going to start by grasping at straws. Want You In My Room is a fun, bubbly song about wanting somebody in your room so that you can presumably bang the shit outta them (“I wanna do bad things to you” “On the bed, on the floor”) but also love them very much (“Press you to the pages of my heart”).
The scene in question here is basically the entire bit where Dirk breaks into Todd’s apartment. This point in Dirk in Todd’s relationship is the beginning, and Todd definitely does not want Dirk in his room for any reason, much less the reasons the song states. The only bad thing Todd does to Dirk in his apartment is try to hit him with a shoe and then begin engaging him in shitty hand to hand combat. But in accordance to the song, Dirk does spend a few seconds being on the floor.
Also, there are the lyrics “I keep a window, for you, it’s always open” and it just so happened that Todd accidentally left his window open for “love” (i.e. Dirk) to come in.
On a more serious note, in the first verse of the song, the lyric “I’m like a lighthouse, I’m a reminder of where you going” pertains to Todd whether he knows it or not. Dirk, coming to Todd’s apartment, was instructed to do so by his future self. Todd is a reminder of a future Dirk saw where he’s told he has a best friend, and that friendship is his goal. It’s where he wants to be going.
SCENE: //sounds of Todd walking away rapidly from Dirk as Dirk continues to follow him
SONG: Everything He Needs [audio] [lyrics]
Still on s1e1, Dirk and Todd’s relationship is in its fledgling stage. Todd tries valiantly to avoid Dirk while Dirk closely pursues him like a determined and cheerful gnat. Fittingly enough, the entire chorus of Everything He Needs is simply the line “he needs me” repeated thirteen times, twice interspersed by the line “I’ve got everything he needs.”
I don’t think that Dirk thinks that Todd needs him, not this early in the game, but he does think that their friendship needs to happen. Additionally, the repetition of the chorus has a building tone of adamant insistence, paralleling the same kind of adamant insistence Dirk has on his entrance into Todd’s life.
SCENE: Very Erectus (like…just in general….every interaction they have in that episode…)
SONG: Now That I Found You [audio] [lyrics] & Feels Right [audio] [lyrics]
Very Erectus is a very important part in Dirk and Todd’s relationship. It’s in this episode where we see the both of them at their most comfortable around each other. They both begin to be more honest and more vulnerable to the other, sharing things they have never shared with anybody else.
There are two songs I have for this scene, one for Dirk and Todd respectively.
Dirk’s song for this episode is Now That I Found You. The first verse of this song goes:
Waking up next to you every morning How did we get this far? It came without a warning And in the nighttime, you tell me your whole life You and me get too real but all I feel is alright
At this point, Todd tells Dirk a lot about his life, Todd tells Dirk a secret he’s never told anybody else, Todd trusts Dirk. That says a lot about Todd, but it also means a lot for Dirk. This is the first time Dirk has ever had a friend, so the trust that’s placed on him must weigh heavily. It must feel too real, but instead of being scared (or perhaps, in addition to), Dirk embraces it, embraces Todd for who he is.
In the next verse, there are the lyrics “My heart’s a secret, mmm / I think I’m coming alive, yeah.” In addition to Todd trusting Dirk, Dirk trusts Todd right back. Dirk tells him about how it feels like to be what he is, how confusing it was, and how alone he’s been. These are things Dirk has kept close to himself, mostly because he didn’t have anybody to ever tell it to, but now he does. This friendship that’s developing between them, this is a moment in Dirk’s life when he gets to come alive in ways he was never able to before.
The lyrics in the chorus “Don’t give it up, don’t say it hurts / ‘Cause there’s nothing like this feeling, baby / Now that I found you,” are really great. These lyrics hit the nail on the head when it comes to the whole thing of Dirk calling Todd “a good friend” and Todd, classic Todd, replying with “I’m a terrible friend.” Dirk confronts Todd’s hesitation, calls out his behavior, and tells him that he’s the closest thing he’s ever had to a friend. Todd is afraid, resists, but Dirk doesn’t want to give this connection up. He can’t, because Todd is the best thing to have happened in Dirk’s life. There’s nothing like this feeling, baby.
“Now That I Found You is about the high you get when a new love starts to change your life,” Jepsen says in a statement about the song. At first glance, this statement seems more like it applies to Todd than Dirk, what with how Dirk’s presence changes Todd’s entire life, but the same is true the other way around. Todd makes Dirk talk about things he’s never talked about. He makes Dirk want to do this, to meet Todd halfway in terms of openness. He makes Dirk want, period. And for the first time in his life, the things Dirk wants—friendship, connection, somebody to stick around—actually seem possible. Now that Dirk has found Todd, he’s been changed for good.
Todd’s song for this episode is Feels Right. The part of this song that sold me for its connection to Todd in this episode is its bridge, which goes as so:
Feels like I’ve been wasting time Look at all the things I’ve left behind You’re the one to change my mind 'Cause it feels right when it feels right I don’t know a thing I’ve done Livin’ all my life with no damn one You’re the one to change my mind 'Cause it feels right, when it feels right
This episode, is, in a lot of ways, a turning point for Todd. Dirk continues to get closer to him and Todd, afraid of that closeness, something he’s presumably been without for years, decides to push Dirk away by telling Dirk his own darkest secret. He tells Dirk the worst thing he’s ever done, the worst part of himself, and he expects for Dirk to leave.
Dirk doesn’t. In fact, Dirk just pushes Todd to change.
And Todd? For the first time in a long time, actually decides to do it. Todd has gotten to this point in his life because he’s been letting life walk all over him. Todd refused to take control of the situation, to make his own choices, but Dirk is the one who convinces him to tell the truth. Dirk makes Todd evaluate his life (“Feels like I’ve been wasting time / Look at all the things I’ve left behind”, “I don’t know a thing I’ve done / Livin’ all my life with no damn one”) and makes him change (“You’re the one to change my mind”). Why? Because for better or for worse, Todd trusts Dirk. Cause it feels right, when it feels right.
SCENE: “You’re a monster.”
SONG: The Sound [audio] [lyrics]
Here we are at the pier where Todd is in the process of breaking Dirk’s heart into a million tiny pieces because he’s outwardly projecting his own self loathing about being a liar. Ouch. But also, The Sound is an absolutely perfect song for this.
Todd’s outburst comes from the fact that he’s angry that Dirk knew this would all happen and also that he didn’t tell Todd that he knew. The key thing he says that I’d like to focus on is the line “You ruined my life, just to have a friend.”
In The Sound, the lyrics “God, you make me so tired / Isn’t this the vision that you wanted?” is Todd feeling upset at what Dirk wanted and the consequences it wrought upon his life. “Love is more than telling me you want it” is Todd angry at Dirk wanting his friendship when that want meant Todd losing so much. In the second verse of the song, we have “Fool’s gold landed on my shoulder,” which is a reference to how Todd feels betrayed by Dirk after trusting him. The chorus of the song goes “I don’t need the words / I want the sound.” As Todd gets angry, Dirk tries to explain himself, but Todd is having none of it. Words have ceased to mean anything to him in this moment, not when he’s feeling like this.
Of course, none of this is Dirk’s fault, but what matters is Todd’s misplaced anger and underlying hurt. The Sound is a song that’s tired, but also one that happens exactly because the persona is hurt. In this moment, Todd is basically drenched in hurt, and Todd doesn’t want any more words. He wants the sound, i.e., the real, tangible action. Which, in this moment, is for Dirk to never speak to him again.
SCENE: The consequences of “You’re a monster.”
SONG: For Sure [audio] [lyrics]
For Sure is a sparse song, in terms of lyrics, but the lyrics that repeats over and over again are “I’ve been thinking, we were over / I’ve been thinking, got to know for sure.”
This line is basically Dirk in the aftermath of the pier scene. Dirk somewhat anticipated that the reveal of his future self would be something that would threaten him and Todd’s friendship, referenced by his line “That’s your best friend. Hopefully, he’ll forgive us for this.” and their argument at the pier is what solidifies his fears. Todd made himself clear that he never wants to see Dirk again, and Dirk accepts this. Even after they solve the case together, Dirk thinks Todd hates him, as is referenced by Amanda’s line later “Dirk says you hate him now.”
In Dirk’s mind, they’re over. It’s official.
SCENE: “I’m here because I’m your friend.” a.k.a. The Hospital Conversation
SONG: Real Love [audio] [lyrics]
The first verse of Real Love goes
The world is going crazy And it feels like I just don’t know who to trust sometimes Something’s coming over me, I need to get a hold of you now We’re getting good at lying No one’s saying what’s keeping us all awake at night Something’s coming over me, I need to get a hold of you now
The case is over. All the weird stuff is, for now, done. Dirk and Todd are at the point where the adventure is over and, respectively, they are unsure of what to do. Dirk accepts that this is just how his life goes and is ready for the universe to take him wherever he needs to go next, but Todd, after being encouraged by Amanda’s words, realizes that she was right when she said that Dirk came into his life for a reason.
Todd goes to see Dirk at the hospital for a lot of reasons. For one thing, he doesn’t know where else to go and who else to turn to (“I just don’t know who to trust sometimes”), so he turns to the one person he was able to be completely open to. Somebody who made him change for the better. Everything in Todd’s life is in flux (“The world is going crazy”), but the one thing he can be sure of is that Dirk made him better, and that he has to get a hold of Dirk before he gets swept away somewhere else. Something is coming over Todd, and he needs Dirk.
The pre-chorus goes:
Standing here with you tonight, how do we turn on the light? I’ve got the feeling that the writing’s on the wall And I’m so used to the lie, and you’re so down to deny I’ve got the feeling you’re the right thing after all
Dirk and Todd stand outside of the hospital. Todd is sure in his choice to see if Dirk will still take him back and Dirk is just flabbergasted Todd came back at all. Todd is so used to all the lies in his life and Dirk is so down to deny anybody would want to spend time with him. They both want to turn on the light, to illuminate what’s actually going on, with Todd saying “I’m here because you’re my friend” the light is switched on. Todd’s intent is clear. Todd has come to the conclusion that Dirk is the right thing after all.
The chorus goes:
I go everyday without it All I want is real, real love And I’ve been feeling weak without it Only want a real, real love I’m not even scared about it All I want is real, real love But I don’t know a thing about it All I want is real, real love
Here they are, standing at the precipice of the unknown. Todd is offering his friendship, if Dirk will take it, and Dirk is just amazed that Todd came back, that he gets to have another chance at this. Both of them want this relationship in any capacity the other is willing to give. Both of them definitely don’t know enough about how to do friendships perfectly, but that’s besides the point. What matters is that they’re here, on the same page, wanting the same thing. Be it platonic or romantic or something else or all of it, they both want real love.
SEASON 2
SCENE: Those really depressing two months when Todd was on the run and Dirk was in Blackwing
SONG: Julien [audio] [lyrics]
Technically, the two months in between season 1 and season 2 aren’t “on screen” canon, but they definitely are “part of the story” canon, and in this point of the journey, Julien is the perfect song for both Dirk and Todd. Julien is a song about pining for somebody whom the persona had a brief time together with. The lyric “We had a moment, we had a summertime” reference the one week Dirk and Todd had with each other and subsequently the lyric “I’m forever haunted by our time” refers to how, in the two months they are separated, each of their respective thoughts are consumed by the other.
Todd in these two months is seen to have an almost manic determination in finding Dirk. His motives are made clear in s2e1, that he wants to find Dirk to find Amanda, but he also says that he wants to find Dirk for Dirk. Todd completely turns into a believer of The Universe and How Things Connect, a.k.a. the things that governed Dirk. This might be a bit of a reach, but believing in The Universe, just like how Dirk did during their time together, is one way Todd can feel closer to Dirk when the reality is that they’re irrevocably apart.
Dirk in these two months has been spending a miserable, miserable time in Blackwing, but as is also revealed in s2e1, one thing it’s implied he kept asking, day after day, was “What have you done to my friends?” Here Dirk is, in his literal trauma nightmare zone, and the only thing on his mind are Farah and Todd and if they’re safe. This, in general, speaks volumes about how much Dirk cares about and loves his friends. Later, when he talks to Moloch, he straight up fanboys about both of them, gushing excitedly about Farah but then…BUT THEN…JUST SMILING AND SAYING “The new guy, Todd, is…perfect.” I could go for ages waxing poetic over how lovestruck Dirk’s smile in this scene is, but honestly, it speaks for itself.
The pre-chorus of Julien goes:
I’ve been all alone, on my own Every single night, I play When you coming home? Coming home? 'Cause I’ve been rarin’ for that day
Dirk and Todd are presumably miles apart with no hope yet on the horizon of being reunited, but all either of them wants is to get out of wherever they are and be together again.
SCENE: Still those depressing two months, but just Todd this time
SONG: I’ll Be Your Girl [audio] [lyrics]
Okay, here’s the thing. I’ll Be Your Girl is a song rather obviously about being jealous because the object of the persona’s affections is with another girl. The lyrics are pretty clear about that with “Oh, but you’re living for her / I go crazy, see red when she’s touching you now / You’re my baby.” Jepsen says it herself in an answer she gave on Reddit, “I really like I’ll Be Your Girl. It’s the first time I ever let myself write about jealousy in such an extreme way.” In canon, there really isn’t any time I think either Dirk or Todd felt jealous, but I had to put this song SOMEWHERE, which is why I am about to resort to extreme metaphor. And thus: in the Brotzly context, the “other girl” mentioned in the lyrics is, in fact, Blackwing.
Now, it’s actually unclear how much Todd knows about Blackwing in canon. The only thing we know for sure is that at some point in s1e5, Dirk tells him enough for Todd to be able to say “It’s [Blackwing] a defunct CIA program that’s after Dirk,” in s1e6. Given the fact that Dirk is kidnapped, Todd must know that Blackwing is bad news. And given how much research Todd and Farah seem to have done about Blackwing in order to find Dirk (which, segue, can be linked to the lyric “I’m the voyeur searching through my laptop.” Instead of online stalking images of the object of affection and the other girl, it’s, RESEARCH. ABOUT BLACKWING.) they must have uncovered some information about how Blackwing, well, sucks.
This transforms the jealousy present in the song to something more like rage. Rage against this “other girl” that has an unwilling Dirk in her cruel experiment-y clutches. Todd wants nothing more than to find Dirk, to be “his girl” again, and more importantly, to get Dirk away from whatever nightmare the “other girl” is.
SCENE: Dirk Gently’s Holistic Existential Crises (a.k.a. The Filing Cabinet Conversation and The Couch Conversation)
SONG: Too Much [audio] [lyrics]
Season 2 is an emotional whirlwind for Dirk in a lot of ways, but one really interesting way is the fact that this case he’s on is new in the sense that it’s the first time he’s doing his thing with friends by his side who had known him before. Up to this point, everybody Dirk has met has always left after the case was over, but the Spring case is over and Farah and Todd are still by his side. This results in an uncomfortable reality for Dirk; the fact that his friends are still with him means that he can now see the consequences of life and all the shit it entails happening to them actually affecting his friends.
The consequences are myriad. There’s the whole “your friends searched everywhere for you for two months” and then the much more sobering “Todd has Pararibulitis.” Another thing Dirk has to face is the fact that having friends means caring about them very deeply, which means that danger just feels so much worse because it’s his friends who are in danger. It’s a bittersweet thing Dirk has to come to terms with. He’s not alone anymore, but with how his life is, a life filled with danger and death and terrible, terrible things, is that really a good thing?
These things now becoming a part of Dirk’s reality starts sending him into a bit of a mood, for lack of a better term. At many points within the Bergsberg case, Dirk gives in to doubt, investigates on his own, and tries to close off. Two specific scenes where this is apparent is the Filing Cabinet Conversation in s2e3 and the Couch Conversation in s2e4.
In both these conversations, Dirk discloses whatever doubts he’s having about the case. In the Filing Cabinet Conversation, he tells Todd that he wanted his life to be better and calmer. In between the lines, Dirk wants life to be like this because it’s a better life for his friends, one that won’t put them in as much harm. Todd’s reply is the same one that Dirk gave him in s1e1, to take control of his life. In the Couch Conversation, this exact exchange occurs, a pretty clear illustration of Dirk’s fear of what his life and presence is doing to his friends.
Dirk: All I ever wanted was a friend, to have someone who believed in me. Todd: And now you have one. More than one. Dirk: And what if who and what I am is going to get you killed?
Throughout all of these moments of doubt, Todd is there to reassure Dirk. Maybe some of it gets through, maybe it doesn’t. What’s important here is that Dirk wants to have friends, but is now coming to terms with the fact that this desire is putting the people he loves in harm’s way.
The first and second verse of the song Too Much begins with the lyrics “Am I bad for you?” and “Am I too close?”, referring to Dirk’s fears and anxieties in the case, especially towards Todd. He fears that his presence in Todd’s life is making it worse (referenced by a line later in s2e7 “You’re just a guy named Todd whose life I ruined.”)
The chorus of Too Much goes:
When I party, then I party too much When I feel it, then I feel it too much When I’m thinking, then I’m thinking too much When I’m drinking, then I’m drinking too much I’ll do anything to get to the rush Now I’m dancing, and I’m dancing too much So be careful if you’re wanting this touch 'Cause if I love you, then I love you too much
Everything about Dirk is a little bit out of this world. Be it his outward personality or the life he lives, it’s definitely a Lot for anybody, well, normal. Before Todd met Dirk, Todd’s life was the pinnacle of normal (and also miserable). Now that Todd is in Dirk’s life, Dirk can’t help but see that things have just gone terribly, over and over again. Blinded by fear at the moment, he’s incapable of seeing the good things he’s brought to Todd’s life, and instead focuses on the bad. He wants Todd, he loves Todd, but now that Dirk has Todd by his side, Dirk begins to see that who he is and what he does is Too Much. The lyric “So be careful if you’re wanting this touch” is coy in the song, but when it pertains to Dirk, it’s a genuine warning. Todd wants this friendship as much as Dirk does, but Dirk has to warn Todd because if he loves Todd, he loves him too much.
The song tapers off with repetitions of “Is this too much?” It’s this question Dirk finds himself asking in the silence between his words. Is his life, is who he is, too much for Todd to handle? Would Todd be better off without him? In spite of it all, Dirk can’t stop himself from wanting, but he also can’t stop himself from doubting.
SCENE: “This is not Miami!”
SONGS: Right Words Wrong Time [audio] [lyrics] & Happy Not Knowing [audio] [lyrics]
Dirk is Not In A Good Place (Mentally) when he and Todd arrive in Wendimoor. He’s coming off of utter despair from the death of Arnold and presumes Farah is dead too. He’s had no hope at all in solving the case. Blackwing is actively after him and the people he loves. It’s at this point, he and Todd get into an argument. Dirk, exhausted and despondent with how this case has ended up, does not want to continue. Todd tries to reassure him, but meets a deadend, and Todd’s patience wavers. Todd leaves Dirk to find Amanda, and Dirk stays behind. I have a lot of emotions about this argument and how it shows off who Dirk and Todd are as characters and how they act when they’re pushed to their limits, but a lot of my emotions also have to do with two songs on Dedicated that are PERFECT for this scene.
The first song is Right Words, Wrong Time. This song is interesting because I can split this song into two. The pre chorus of the song are from Todd’s perspective and the chorus is from Dirk’s.
The pre chorus of the song goes
Took a million miles to feel the final separation Don’t you tell me now you know what you need I need to find a love to love me with no hesitation Don’t you tell me now you’re ready for me
Todd has been supportive of Dirk every step of the way, but here when Dirk gives up is when Todd reaches a point where he has to make a choice. Todd says “Friendship isn’t just about someone being there for you. It about you being there for them, too.” He wants Dirk to step up, but Dirk doesn’t. Todd wants a love with no hesitation, but right now, Dirk is made of decided hesitation.
The chorus of Right Words Wrong Time represent Dirk’s thoughts during this scene. The song goes “My baby, my baby / You always got the right words at the wrong time / This time, it’s heartbreaking.” Dirk knows that Todd is trying to reassure him, and that, in any other circumstance, would be great. But it’s the wrong time. All of Todd’s words about how he believes in Dirk and the Everything Connecting can’t get through to Dirk in the current state he’s in. All these words do is make Dirk feel guiltier, feel worse.
The second song is Happy Not Knowing, solely from Dirk’s perspective. Jepsen says “Happy Not Knowing is about when you can’t avoid that you have feelings for someone but you’re just not ready to go there yet.” Dirk, at this point, has a lot of feelings about Todd, a lot of which might be subtext and can be argued over, but one thing is for sure; he cares about Todd deeply. Right now, how much he cares for Todd is at war with his belief that all he’s doing is making Todd’s life worse and putting him in danger.
From this perspective, it isn’t that Dirk isn’t ready to come to terms with his feelings, it’s that he was, saw the consequences, and now wants to distance himself. The chorus of Happy Not Knowing goes “But if there’s something between you and me / Baby, I have no time for it / I’m happy not knowing.” Todd tries to talk to Dirk, but Dirk doesn’t want to hear it. His feelings for Todd are exactly why he doesn’t want to “know.”
The pre chorus of the song goes
But I’ll only go so far I don’t have the energy To risk a broken heart When you’re already killing me
Above all, Dirk is exhausted and drained from everything that has happened to him and the people around him. He believe he’s the reason for so many people getting hurt, and he doesn’t want to risk Todd getting hurt too and the resulting broken heart he’ll suffer from it.
SCENE: //sounds of Todd running through the Wendmoorian forests
SONG: Party For One [audio] [lyrics]
Party For One is a magnificent song about self-love and trying to get over an ex, and it is hilariously apt for the scene where Todd, frustrated with Dirk’s attitude, decides to go off by himself to do what he needs to do (i.e. run around a magic forest and intermittently yell AMANDA!)
Todd feels like Dirk hasn’t just given up on the case, but given up on Todd. The chorus of Party For One goes “Party for one / If you don’t care about me / I’ll just dance for myself / Back on my beat.” This shows Todd’s attitude of “Fine! You don’t want to help, I’ll just do it myself!” Less of the originally intended self-love (because this is Todd we’re talking about), and more of him taking matters into his own hands.
SCENE: “Don’t spin out.”
SONG: No Drug Like Me [audio] [lyrics]
I was very, very conflicted on where to place No Drug Like Me. It’s a song about being vulnerable and open with another person because they are vulnerable and open with you too. Jepsen said “[It’s] a promise I made to love in general. That when the good stuff lands my way I’ll always try to be vulnerable and brave and show all of myself.”
Throughout writing this post, I kept switching the song with either this scene I’ve decided on or the Peace Spell Funtime scene in Sound Of Nothing. What made me finally make up my mind was the fact that while the Peace Spell did result in an extremely heartwarming scene where Todd and Dirk gush about how much they mean to each other, it was a scene that was brought about through magical means of losing one’s inhibitions to reveal the truths they have simmering inside. The concepts of vulnerability and openness hold more weight if they are conscious decisions, and not magically induced declarations of love. Which is what brings me to this scene in s2e9.
This scene is brief, and has to be, because it’s right on the edge of all the action. Amanda and Todd have to keep a portal open and be in terrible pain the entire time, while Dirk has to go, alone, to the one place he hates and fears more than anything. It’s at this point where Dirk starts spiralling, using big words and lots of syllables to mask his terror, and Todd, immediately, goes to Dirk and says “Don’t spin out. You can do this.”
This. This is vulnerability. This is Dirk nodding, accepting that he’s afraid and being afraid in front of somebody he cares about. This is Todd seeing that honesty, that emotion, and being honest right back with the complete faith he has in Dirk. Dirk in this scene is the epitome of the lyric “Worried eyes, I’m open wide” and Todd meets him right there. Todd “Take[s] [him] so up and down.”
The chorus of No Drug Like Me goes
And if you make me feel in love, then I’ll blossom for you If you make me open up, I’ll tell only the truth When your mouth is running dry Your head high, hold on, baby You ain’t tried no drug like me
This is what they are to each other. In a brief instance, we can see just how much they’re both holding up their ends of the promise they made to love. After all the doubt and fear, they both believe in each other, and it is that belief that keeps both of them going. Keeps both of them gravitating towards each other.
SCENE: “Hey. You solved the case.”
SONG: Automatically In Love [audio] [lyrics]
The last episode of the series. The case is over. The Boy has been returned to Wendimoor. Dirk and Todd are leaning against the Amboolents after watching Amanda and the Rowdies drive away. Now, there isn’t anything overtly romantic about this scene. Dirk and Todd engage in lighthearted banter which warms my soul, but then Dirk’s expression goes a little concerned when Todd takes his pills. He asks, “Are you alright?” and Todd smiles and replies “You know what? I really am.”
Automatically In Love is a song exactly about what it says on the tin. Two people meeting and, in a second, falling in love with each other. This is a song I’m deliberately using not for Dirk and Todd’s first appearance but their last. This is because I don’t think Dirk and Todd fell in love with each other immediately. I think those feelings, at least from what we see in canon, are feelings that developed as they got to know each other and as they became close friends. What they did feel upon first meeting though is an instant connection. From the beginning, they knew that there was more to the other than met the eye. It’s this connection between them that grows into the feelings they have now.
The first verse and pre chorus of Automatically In Love goes
I never thought about you You never thought about us Yeah, it came out of the blue And I was just dreaming […]
Ooh, ooh-ooh Never guess what came after Ooh, ooh-ooh I fell
When Dirk and Todd first met, I don’t think either of them expected or intended to feel this deeply about the other. Fast forward a couple of months in the future to this scene, and we Dirk and Todd completely comfortable with each other. Their connection has grown into a very real bond. This song fits this scene because it feels like their reminiscing of how far they’ve come. From an instant spark to a strong friendship with only the horizon as the limit for where else they could go.
CONCLUSION
In an interview about Dedicated, Jepsen says “I wanted to be able to write about the confusing parts of love. For sure the perfect example of that is when you get stuck in the loop of repeating the same thought over and over in your head of like, ‘Is this right? Should I stay? Should I go?’” And this is one reason why I latched onto this album, its songs, and its link to Brotzly. Dedicated isn’t an album about how love is perfect or simple. It’s an album that explores the parts of love that are sometimes difficult to deal with.
Dirk and Todd’s relationship within canon is anything but smooth sailing. They have a rocky start, they get into arguments, they clash, but also they come together. These are two people with wildly different personalities who managed to find each other and click. This click doesn’t mean everything is okay. It still means doubt, fear, and insecurity, but these things do not discount the strong relationship that is at its bedrock. Dirk and Todd’s relationship, their love for each other, is confusing. It’s complex. It’s anything but simple. But that’s okay, because they have each other. Together, they’ll figure it out.

Cronus.mp3
27 + 26 tracks straight from Cronus Ampora’s media player. 93 + 87 minutes. One part straight pop, one part mostly more credible music.
[Side A] [Side B]
Oooh boy, I’ve been putting publishing this off for so long because it’s just never perfect, but truth is it never will be so I might as well publish it. The idea was to make a playlist of music that Cronus would listen to and/or identify with, eventually this split into two playlists, somewhat arbitrarily divided between pop and rock. Below are links to the songs, but I don’t think that any one lyric will be representative of the song and why I view it as a Cronus song, neccessarily.
The one band I include twice is Le Kid, mostly to juxtapose their excellent cover of Mr. Brightside with the original. Unfortunately, the version on YouTube isn’t as good as the studio version, which also seems to be floating around on tumblr for anyone interested.
Side A - Pop
Justin Bieber - Sorry - You gotta go and get angry at all of my honesty
Le Kid - Mercy Mercy - You should be saying you will treat me, treat me right
Erasure - Love To Hate You - Sending shivers up and down my spine
Semisonic - Get A Grip - Well don’t be blue ‘cause there’s no one to play with you
Jason Derulo - Trumpets - Is it weird that I hear angels every time that you moan?
Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl - Hard to resist, so touchable
ABBA - Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie! (A Man After Midnight) - How I hate to spend the evening on my own
The Drifters - There Goes My Baby - I broke her heart, and made her cry
George Michael - Faith - Well I need someone to hold me but I’ll wait for somethin more
Madonna - Like A Virgin - You made me feel I’ve nothing to hide
Anton - Begging - I’m on my knees and ready for your answer
Phil Collins - You Can’t Hurry Love - How long must I wait? How much more can I take? Before loneliness will cause my heart to break
The Limousines - Internet Killed The Video Star [Tommie Sunshine remix] - I’m a shitty romancer, baby; I ain’t gonna lie, but I’ll be damned if that means that I ain’t gonna try
Mike Posner - I Took a pill in ibiza (Seeb remix) - I get along with old-timers, ‘cause my name’s a reminder of a pop song people forgot
Movits! - Sammy Davis Jr. - They say I sound old-school, baby, like Frank, and Sammy Davis
The Temptations - Ain’t Too Proud To Beg - Please don’t leave me, girl, don’t you go
The Weeknd - I Feel It Coming - So baby, I can make it right, you just got to let me try
Kanye West - Heartless - I did some things, but that’s the old me
The Chainsmokers - Closer - Tell your friends it was nice to meet them, but I hope I never see them again
Carly Rae Jepsen - Your Type - I’m not going to pretend that I’m the type of girl you call more than a friend
Taylor Swift - Style - You’ve got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
Urban Cone - Old School - Keep saying chivalry has faded, girl I can’t wait to prove you wrong
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines - I hate these blurred lines
Prince - Kiss - I want to be your fantasy, maybe you could be mine?
Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend - Don’t you even try and explain how it’s so different when we kiss
Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory - I got a reason that you should take me home tonight
Le Kid - Mr. Brightside - Now she’s letting me go

The Killers - Mr. Brightside - And I just can’t look, it’s killing me

Blink-182 - Built This Pool - I wanna see some naked duuuuuudes!

Top Cats - Basket Case - She says it’s lack of sex that’s bringing me down
The Vapors - Turning Japanese - I want to kiss you when there’s no one else around
Neon Trees - Everybody Talks - Hey sugar, show me all your love, all you’re giving me is friction
Mando Diao - Dance With Somebody - I’m falling in love with your favourite song, I’m gonna sing it all night long
Jack White - Love Interruption - I want love to grab my fingers gently, slam them in a doorway, put my face into the ground
Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine? - Are you mine tomorrow? Or just mine tonight?
The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out - And in the darkened underpass, I thought, oh God, my chance has come at last

Foster The People - Don’t Stop (Color On The Walls) - Don’t stop talkin’ to me, don’t stop giving me things
Queen - Somebody To Love - One day I’m gonna be free, Lord! Find me somebody to love

Q&A: Pale Waves Guides Us Through ‘My Mind Makes Noises’ Debut Album, Track by Track
Photo: Brian Griffin Pale Waves is a bit of a contradiction, and that is just part of what makes them such a dynamic act. They look like the disciples of Gerard Way and Joy Division, but sound like the offspring of The Bangles and Carly Rae Jepsen. They’re huge fans of modern pop acts like Charli XCX, but they could have easily shared a stage with Madonna in the ‘80s. They have amassed over 25-million Spotify streams since the release of their debut single, “There’s a Honey,” in Feb. 2017 and have played huge milestone venues like Madison Square Garden. Yet, they have just released their debut full-length album, My Mind Makes Noises.
Their meteoric rise based on a collection of singles solidifies that Pale Waves has what it takes to become the next big thing, and their success comes down to one simple fact: no one else is doing what Pale Waves is right now—nor as well. Not only has Pale Waves championed the difficult task of successfully walking the line between pop and rock, but they have introduced a universe of tender emotion with their lyrics as they wear their hearts on their fishnet covered sleeves. Combining elements of different genres, decades, subcultures, and emotions, they craft dream-like pop that still has two feet firmly planted on the ground. With their dichotomous existence and evocative lyrics, Pale Waves’ success ushers in the return of female-fronted pop-rock in an era that’s sorely lacking thereof.
After a year and a half of cultivating their rapidly rising fame, today marks the release of My Mind Makes Noises. The album is filled with enough diverse pop bangers and guitar-driven melodies to throw the Manchester-based outfit further into the spotlight, while drawing new listeners into their emotionally cinematic world. Frontwoman Heather Baron-Gracie’s lyrics entangle you in their strikingly raw nature as she presents her most vulnerable self, while the production of drummer Ciara Doran creates lush gardens of whirling melodies and skies of twinkling synth that makes this album one to be kept on repeat, or risk leaving their beautifully melancholic world.
Despite the fervor surrounding My Mind Makes Noises, as well as their accompanying headlining tour, Heather and Ciara are surprisingly calm as they make themselves comfortable on the sofa of the small lounge we’ve met in. “It’s kind of like a timeline of our band from basically three-and-a-half years ago to present day,” Heather explained as we begin talking about the debut album. “We started the band because I had all these songs on my acoustic and when I met Ciara I was like, ‘Can you put drums to my songs?’ We did performances where she was just drumming, and then we decided to just become a band.”
Though they were the heart and soul of the band, when the duo met Hugo Silvani and Charlie Wood a year later, Pale Waves would finally begin to take shape as they began to plan for world domination—something that My Mind Makes Noises will undoubtedly help them achieve. “It feels pretty surreal. It feels like our whole journey’s been pretty fast and really exciting. A lot of people are really emotionally invested into our band at such an early stage, which is great because it means we’re really connecting with people. It’s just everything you could ask for and I want the album to be what people expected,” Heather stated.
In honor of the release of My Mind Makes Noises, we spoke about each of the 14 tracks on the album to hear the stories behind the music, and get a feel for what’s next for the band.
OTW: The opening track “Eighteen” is an absolute earworm that truly seems to channel what it feels like to fall in love. What can you tell us about its creation?
Ciara: “Eighteen” was written fully on tour.
Heather: Yeah, I wrote a lot of things to the instrumental and then in Denver I finally got it. Everyone we showed it to was like, “This is gonna be a big song” so, that’s why it’s first on the album.
Ciara: Lyrically, it’s really nice as well.
Heather: I had that first verse written for ages, and then Ciara wrote the music around it.
Ciara: That was actually a song that like I watched Adventureland and wrote to. Vibes from films can really give you inspiration for sound.
youtube
OTW: There are new recordings of your first two singles “There’s a Honey” and “Television Romance” making the cut. What was it about these songs that made them, as opposed to the others on your EP, essential for your debut record?
Heather: Well, “There’s a Honey” just had to be on the album because it was the first song that we put out there. It really made our fanbase, and it set something up for us. And then “Television Romance;” those two just sort of work together as a duo, and it felt weird to have one without the other.
Then when we were listening back to the demos it was pretty clear that we had to re-record them. We wanted it to sound like they were all recorded at the same time in the same studio and having the demos on the album just wouldn’t have worked.
OTW: “Noises” is undoubtedly one of the most powerful tracks as it tackles image insecurities and expectations. Did the track come from a purely confessional standpoint?
Heather: I thought about how the fans would react to it, but I knew I had to write it for me. I didn’t even think that much about how they’d relate to it until I got loads of messages thanking me. I feel it’s the most important track we’ve put out so far—we have quite a young fanbase and when you’re growing up that’s when you really think about what you wanna be and how you look. I’m just glad that I wasn’t too scared to write about that because it’s the song that’s now been there for so many people.
OTW: And what can you tell us about the video?
Heather: That video was a last minute thing but it was just so obvious that it needed to be a performance video from me. We spoke about having different Heathers that weren’t truly me: punk Heather is more exaggerated, the fashion look is stereotypically socially acceptable, and the doll look is a really sort of childish, vulnerable me. The one with the plastic sheet over my face, it’s basically like: what is beauty and who considers it? It plays on plastic surgery as well like, “Am I still beautiful under the plastic?” For the flashes of text between scenes, I wrote a paragraph of all my thoughts, and then we spoke about the ones that stood out the most. One, in particular, is “Does everyone feel this way?” I wanted to put that in because I wanted it to be like a sense of comfort for people who are really insecure as well, to know they’re not alone.
youtube
OTW: “Came In Close” and “Loveless Girl” are definitely two of the poppiest songs on the album. What inspired the tracks?
Heather: Those two tracks are really influenced by Ciara. I feel like we work so well together because I’m quite dark and she’s quite light so that’s how we get our sound. The lyrical content is quite meaningful and sad, but then Ciara sparkles it with pure pop elements, which you can really see on those tracks.
Ciara: “Came In Close” is really new. I was listening to Aretha Franklin’s “Jump To It,” and then I just sat down and wrote that bass line. It just turned out to be a really dancey song.
“Loveless Girl” originally sounded quite different, and I was so unhappy with it. I had to literally force myself to rework it cause it didn’t have the right vibe.
OTW: “Drive” is a larger than life track that smacks you with a guitar driven alt-rock sound and some truly dreamy synths. What can you tell us about the track?
Heather: We kept coming back and kept referencing The Naked And Famous, especially with the guitar sounds. I imagine when we play it live, it’s not going to take a lot for it to sound massive. It’s a really dramatic track as well; lyrically it’s like the sequel to “Noises.” Like “Noises” was when I was 16, and “Drive” is where I am now at 23. I do find writing songs about myself is hard, but I’m really glad we have tracks like “Drive.”
Ciara: You know that line “I drive fast so I can feel something?”
Heather: She would listen to that on repeat!
Ciara: Because I would cut it and put a delay on it and it made it like the best part of the album, I think.
Heather: Everyone we’ve played it to has been like, “Oh my god, this is something else!” We must be doing something right.
OTW: “When Did I Lose It All” is a breathtaking ballad that is just pure emotion. How did you approach writing the track?
Heather: Well, Ciara actually helped me write the chorus, and it’s about basically having somebody who’s “the one,” and you know that they’re right for you but you just don’t work in that moment. We were writing that chorus and Ciara came up with the “I want to marry you, but not now.”
Ciara: It’s the saddest thing.
Heather: I thought it was a really strong message. When I’ve shown the album to people, I’ve noticed that the older audience sway to that song.
Ciara: They find it really powerful; it’s a really powerful song. The guitar line was written on the tour bus. I feel like the next thing we do is going to be that vibe.
OTW: Similarly, “She” uses its power as a ballad to create a slow build into an absolutely epic guitar solo that has become a fan-favorite at your live shows. How did the track come to be?
Heather: “She” is quite an old song. I wrote, “My baby don’t touch me like they used to” first in my bedroom ages ago. It’s one of those songs that Ciara really just let me be all emo about. And the guitar solo—I love playing it live. A lot of the time I give all the lead riffs to Hugo but with this, I was like, “I can’t give you this, I’m sorry I have to play it.”
Ciara: I think it’s also the first song that I started doing a lot more of the music.
Heather: And now Ciara pretty much owns that whole area. I feel like the album has much more personality than the EP because when we did the EP that was all my really old synth songs except “The Tide.”
Photo: Danny North OTW: The following song “One More Time” seems to be the formers’ upbeat sequel that features an addictively timeless rock hook, making it one of the fullest sounding songs on the record. What shaped the creation of the track?
Heather: This was one of the moments where we were sitting down in the studio, but we needed more sort of “pop bangers.” We weren’t trying to write it for the radio but that’s just how we are.
Ciara: We just didn’t feel satisfied without it though, because we love pop so much. We wanted a song that was really just straightforward and would sound really good with Heather on guitar.
Heather: Really simple and dry all the way through, but you don’t really get a break in it. When Ciara showed me it musically for the first time ever, I just stood there and started singing the chorus.
Ciara: She sang that, and I was like “Fuck!”
Heather: Usually we’re perfectionists and we’re like, “If it’s the first thing it can’t be right,” but with this, we were like, “You know what? That’s it.” I feel like everyone goes through it when you break up with someone and you have that doubt in your mind. You like to know you could still have them—you want that power and that’s what this song’s about.
OTW: As we touched upon “Television Romance” earlier, let's talk influence. Considering how many of your tracks are cinematic enough to be suited for a John Hughes movie, and “Television” is a frequently used word lyrically—how much do TV and Film influence your songs?
Ciara: It influences us a lot, I mean that’s how we used to start off writing songs like “Kiss.”
Heather: Yeah like The Breakfast Club—I had to do this assignment for Uni and it was like, “Write a song to a film.” I caught a trailer of The Breakfast Club and that’s how “Kiss” became a song. So like I think it influences us a lot more than we think.
Ciara: Movies are like songs: like they all have a flow and a vibe and a story. So, like I feel like it can go hand-in-hand and just inspire you a lot. Especially when you can go, “I want to make a song that sounds like it belongs in that movie.”
OTW: “Red” is an incredibly modern pop-rock classic that seems to channel the likes of Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen. How did the track come to be?
Heather: “Red” actually started as an acoustic track. I love playing acoustic, and it was how we started the band, so I wrote “Red” acoustically to be that song. When I showed it to Ciara she was like “Oh my god that’s far too good.”
Ciara: It wasn’t right, the tone wasn’t right, the lyrics weren’t enough for an acoustic song.
Heather: It’s completely different now—the chorus is like a club track
OTW: “Kiss” is akin to a “Friday I’m In Love” moment that’s effortlessly feel-good. What inspired the track, and on that note, what was it like playing the Robert Smith-curated Meltdown Festival this year?
Heather: That was amazing, so good. We didn’t get to meet him but knowing he was the one who gave us that slot and kind of likes our band is pretty amazing. I think Robert Smith is an amazing songwriter and just a fantastic icon. I’ll probably dress the same when I’m old. “Kiss” is so old. It started with The Breakfast Club and that riff. It’s such a naive song, and I wasn’t half as honest as I am now. It’s a fun song to play live—the main thing about it is that it goes down really good live, and it’s just really energetic.
youtube
OTW: “Black,” your most recent single, is your most diverse. It plays with R&B beats and intensely catchy guitar riffs. What shaped this track?
Heather: “Black” we’ve had for ages. I actually wrote the first verse ages ago, then I showed Ciara and it always just stuck with her, so she was like “Please, please make it into a song.”
Ciara: That was written on tour as well.
Heather: It’s been the most problematic song that we’ve ever wrote. It just had a lot of different versions.
Ciara: When I stupidly put an R&B chorus in there we were like “Ugh, how are we gonna do this now?”
Heather: Cause like, when you listen to it the verses are really frantic and really rock, and then the chorus is relaxed R&B.
Ciara: It’s a juxtaposition.
OTW: Closing out the record is “Karl”—a deeply personal acoustic track that is beautifully haunting. What was it like writing the track destined to end your debut record?
Heather: Well, after I wrote “Red” and needed a new acoustic song Ciara was like, “You need to write an acoustic track about something a lot more personal… Why don’t you write it about your granddad?” I’d been trying to write about him for ages because he’s such an important person in my life, so then I sat down in the studio and really, really focused on him while writing. It took me a day to write the song and the next day we went in and recorded, so it’s as real and raw as it gets. Ciara cried when I first sang it to her. Everyone has nearly cried when they first listen to the song.
Ciara: You’d be a monster if you didn’t cry to that song.
Heather: I think that’s a track that’s really going to impact some people. I wanted it to be like a conversation more than a song so a lot of the lyrics are like if I could talk to him now the things I would say. It’s definitely the song that I’ve listened to the most. It’s my most vulnerable self, and it’s really quite scary, this going out into the world, but it’s as real as it gets.

For Joanie
Joanie - I know you and I know you’ve probably spent the past five years working your ass off and doing nothing else. Which I appreciate of course, because, you know, here I am, but based on your CD collection (CDs Joan!!! CDs!!! What are you doing!?!? iTunes has existed for nearly 20 years), you haven’t been buying new music. I checked your computer too. You don’t have Spotify or anything (it’s this new streaming service that I don’t understand).
Just so you don’t think I’ve been sitting at home watching Netflix all day, I’ve also been catching up on the last five years of music. Sam and the boys have tried to get me up to speed on all things pop culture but there’s just so much. It’s been a big undertaking and I’m making this a family project now. You and I are both going to start listening to music that’s been released since 2011 (spoiler alert: pop music got gooooood). You need to know what’s going on in the zeitgeist, Joanie. You can’t just listen to Radiohead and The Beach Boys on repeat forever. (don't worry, I got you an actual Christmas present, this is just a bonus)
1. “What’d I Miss” - Hamilton
Okay, you may live under a rock when it comes to pop culture, but I’m sure you’ve heard of Hamilton. It seems like a pretty huge deal. We should try to see it when it comes here on tour but I wanted to start the playlist with this song because if there’s anything I’m known for it’s my ability to make self-aware jokes about the grimness of my situation.
2. “Sorry” - Beyonce
Queen B does it again - I’ve put this whole album on your computer (yes I downloaded iTunes for you) because it is straight fire.
3. “Good as Hell” - Lizzo
A new artist to me and to the world in general I think - it seems like she’s about to blow up, which is totally earned.
4. “How to Be a Heartbreaker” - Marina & the Diamonds
Glad to see Marina is still bringing it. (bet Agent Green feels like the guys in this song 😜)
5. “Cool Kids” - Echosmith
I don’t know how they managed to perfectly encapsulate what it feels like to be in high school but they did. God, aren’t you glad we’re past that stage of our life?
6. “Royals” - Lorde
This chick is SO young and SO talented. There’s buzz that she’s got a new album coming out this year so I’m really excited for that.
7. “Style” - Taylor Swift
Last time I checked, Taylor Swift was that massive country star who sang about Romeo and Juliet? What happened? I don’t know why I’m asking you, I know you don’t know. Have you even heard of Taylor Swift? Well, apparently, she’s like, the biggest pop star now and writing total bangers, so that’s cool.
8. “Level Up” - Vienna Teng
Okay, to your credit, you did have this CD (again, where do you even buy CDs??) but I actually loaded it onto your computer so you can listen on your phone and stuff. This is my favorite song from the album so far. It’s optimistic.
9. “Youth” - Daughter
Listening to this hurts if I listen too closely, but it is really pretty.
10. “Once Upon Another Time” - Sara Bareilles
I know you’re sort of indifferent about Bareilles, but this song makes me feel a certain kind of way, you know? And apparently, she wrote a musical, so we should look into that.
11. “The Greatest Bastard” - Damien Rice
Remember my emo poet phase when I only listened to O for a month? Well, Damien Rice wrote a new album and it’s really great. Naturally my favorite song from the new record is one of the saddest. You can take the boy out of his teen years…
12. “Iron Sky” - Paolo Nutini
Paolo!!! God, this guy is so good. His new album is weird, but this is probably one of the best songs written in the past 5 years and I can say that with confidence because I’m pretty sure I’ve listened to every song that came out in the past 5 years.
13. “33 “GOD”” - Bon Iver
Another weird album - feels like a big departure for Bon Iver. But guess what? He samples the Paolo song in this!
14. “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” - The Arctic Monkeys
The Arctic Monkeys have been releasing the same song since, like, 2005, but I’m not mad about it. I know this probably makes you think about that time in my sophomore year but you promised you wouldn’t tease me about that anymore so keep your mouth shut.
15. “Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Time” - Panic! at the Disco
Speaking of emo phases, Panic! kept releasing music and brought back the !. I’m sad they didn’t continue with the sound they were developing with Pretty. Odd., but the new stuff is great too. Adam sent this album to me and it is such a good time (pun intended).
16. “Out on the Town” - fun.
I can’t remember if I ever gave you the first fun. album but it’s the guy from The Format, that band I dragged you to that show of one time the summer before my freshman year of college. Remember? It was that time we got the kielbasa at that weird little stand we would always walk by. Anyway, this album is great.
17. “John Wayne” - Lady Gaga
The twists and turns keep on coming! Apparently Lady Gaga has gone through every genre since I’ve been gone and done them all really well. This is her doing country and it makes me want to like country.
18. “Warm Blood” - Carly Rae Jepsen
Okay, full disclosure, I did not discover this album on my own. It’s something Damien would play a lot in the car and despite any associations with that, the songs are still really good.
19. “Ain’t It Fun” - Paramore
Paramore still singing the truth after all this time.
20. “Somebody Loves You” - Betty Who
I feel like this gal has some great Robyn vibes going on and this song is just really happy. I think we could both use that.

34. DON’T GET ME WRONG de lily allen ( don’t get me wrong if i’m looking kind of dazzled, i see neon lights whenever you walk by. don’t get me wrong if i’m acting so distracted, i’m thinking about the fireworks that go off when you smile. )

¡Felicidades! Te quiero mucho, mucho.
andy.

venus in sagittarius: a playlist
8tracks link here. this was fun and also a hard self-drag
1. big time sensuality - bjork (it takes courage to enjoy it / the hardcore and the gentle / big time sensuality / i don’t know my future after this weekend and i don’t want to)
2. one too many - kaytranada ft. phonte (all i really want is just a night at home with her by candlelight / but until i find that girl i’m gonna hit the floor and we gon jam tonight / just can’t settle down, not right now)
3. moth to the flame - chairlift (i should know better than to take your love letters to heart / when the game’s already lost before it starts / but hope hides inside a cliche)
4. stop desire - tegan and sara (i didn’t wanna be so invested / i played it cool and then i overdressed it.. you know i’m ready for anything to happen / take this passion turn it into action)
5. boy problems - carly rae jepsen (i think i broke up with my boyfriend today and i don’t really care! / yall already know this song)
6. you’re not the one - sky ferreira (seasons bring truth / when i found mine it was summertime / it’s the middle of the night and i’m so gone / and i’m thinking about how much i need you but you really want somebody else / YOU’RE NOT THE ONE!)
7. flesh without blood - grimes (i don’t see the light i saw in you before / and i don’t care anymore / baby believe me / and you had every chance, you destroy everything that you love / if you don’t need me just let me go)
8. bunny ain’t no kind of rider - of montreal**** (eva, i’m sorry, but you will never have me / to me you’re just some f*ggy girl and i need a lover with soul power / and you ain’t got no soul power)
9. white lightning and wine - heart (sweet little one let me love you some / take me or leave me alone / the gooder they come the harder they fall / turn around you are a nasty joke)
10. to your love - fiona apple (please forgive me for my distance / the pain is manifest in my resistance to your love / i would’ve warned you, but really, what’s the point? / caution could but rarely ever helps)
11. extreme wealth and casual cruelty - unknown mortal orchestra (if we were just strangers then we would fall in love again / abandon extreme wealth and casual cruelty / and now i can see why everyone acts weird to me)
------------------------------------------------------
****note: i only included this song despite the slur bc im a gay bitch and i am reclaiming it as a fun lesbian injoke, having put it on multiple playlists about girls i no longer mess with due to their lack of soul power, but i dont endorse kevin barnes or anyone using it
