Descendants canon chapter four: vaccinations and assessments
(CONTENT WARNING: heavy mentions of needles and vaccinations, please read at your own risk.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top to bottom: Gil, Jane, Aricka Page and Aziz :)
The group eventually made their way to the Auradon Prep Library, and settled at the various tables in the room. The Jr Council assembled around the Fairy Godmother; Verna LaFae.
The motherly Fae smiled at the gathered children, “Welcome, all of you; to Auradon. I’m the Fairy Godmother, and I’m also the headmistress here at Auradon Prep. I’m here to help and support you in your transition from the Isle to Auradon, along with the future heirs of the kingdoms of Auradon. You know them as the Jr Council. Now; what we’re about to have you all do, is complete a series of assessment tests. The tests will only go over the major subjects: English/Language Arts, Math, Science, Auradon and Isle History, and Health. We’ll do one test at a time, but I don’t want any of you to worry. Just do your very best, these tests are designed for me to be able to best place you where you can thrive and learn at your best pace. This will also help me make your schedules.”
The VKs all glanced at one another; and Aricka Charming caught at least two worried looks being shared, several doubtful looks, and a couple confident faces.
Miss Verna passed out the tests and Doug gave out pencils and scratch paper, and with a flick of the wand, the assessments began.
~~~~~~~~~~ time jump~~~~~~~~~~~
Aricka was the first to notice one of the new students struggling, and it was almost instinctive for her to walk over to Harry, sit beside him; and clear her throat so he wasn’t startled by her sudden appearance. “Harry… please don’t be offended by what I’m about to ask- but are you having a problem reading the text?” She asks gently. The brunette pirate grips the pencil so tightly she was worried it would snap in half, but he nods slowly. “Well, that’s not a problem. You might need an eye appointment- I’ll make a note for your upcoming physical.”
“I can see just fine,” he growled suddenly; but Aricka was prepared for this moment.
“Harry.. are the words fuzzy? Or blurry? Like the words are obscured by rain?” The boy goes silent. “I had that same issue. Turns out I have an astigmatism in both my eyes, along with my left eye having what’s called amblyopia, or lazy eye. My left eye was weaker than my right when I was younger; and now I wear glasses to correct my vision. It’s nothing to be afraid of or embarrassed about. A lot of people in Auradon wear glasses.”
“… it’s no’ a weakness?” The accent tickled her ears, and she nods, a soft smile on her face.
“No, Harry, it’s not a weakness. Mr. Smee- he wears glasses right?” Harry slowly nods. “Is he considered weak for his glasses?”
“Cap- da wouldn’t let anyone call him such,” he says.
“Okay then. I won’t let anyone call you names either. And I doubt Uma would, cause she’s a fierce captain who wouldn’t let anyone call her loyal friends any rude names.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the tests were over, the kids were lead to the nurse’s station at the school, where they all once again sat down and waited for instructions, Mal and Uma stationing themselves by the doors this time. During the assessments Carlos and Gil had been at the doors.
Whatever helped them feel comfortable in a new environment, Aricka thought.
“Okay, so we’re about to begin the physicals and vaccination process of this orientation,” Lonnie said. “We’re going to do the vaccinations first. Vaccinations are important, because they ward off infection by imitating the infection. Many of these vaccines require a second dose later in the year. You guys have been on the Isle for a long time with little to no access to immunizations or healthcare. That is going to be rectified now.”
Be clears his throat. “Aricka, are you willing to demonstrate getting your tetanus vaccine?” The girl nodded and rolled up her sleeve as she sat in front of the school doctor; and Evie recognized the man as Doc, from her mother’s stories.
(For purposes of my canon, Danny Devito is Doc, Peter Dinklage is Grumpy; and Owen Wilson is Dopey. Rest of the dwarves fan cast to follow-!)
Chad offered his hand to his twin, who smiled in relief as she gripped it tightly. “First; I’m going to use this antibacterial spray and wipe to clean your arm and get it ready for the needle,” Doc said. “The medicine is inside the needle, and the needle goes into your arm. It will pinch only for a few seconds, but with a tetanus shot, you might experience minimal pain for a few hours to a couple days. I recommend you stretch your arm every few hours, icing the area and even rubbing the skin where the injection site is, to help spread the medication quicker.” While he was explaining all this, the kids watched as the needle was injected into Aricka’s arm, and Doc pressed the plunger carefully.
Harry watched the girl who’d been so patient with him wince in pain as the medicine kicked in, and Doc put a piece of gauze on her arm before applying a bright colored piece of- something- over the gauze. “Thank you, Miss Charming. I must say you’re much braver than my previous patient.” She blushes and whispers a quiet thank you.
“Who’s next?”
~~~~~~~~
Halfway through the process, there was a brief scene, but Aricka and Chad quickly hurried through to Gil’s side, since the others were all busy watching the physicals or the other kids get their vaccines. “Woah, Gil; what’s wrong sweetheart?” Aricka asks.
“The needle-,” he says; almost a whimper. Chad glances at Aricka, who nods.
“Are you scared? It’s okay if you are. Chad knows I’m scared of needles too and he holds my hand whenever I get shots. We could hold your hands and distract you if you want-?”
Gil looks between them, and Aricka holds his gaze, knowing Chad would as well. “… you won’t laugh at me-?”
“No,” Chad promises. “Everyone is afraid of something. Aricka is afraid of needles, I’m afraid of the dark,” he confessed.
“… you’re afraid of something-? But you guys are heroes?” Gil says, his hand creeping towards Aricka’s outstretched one.
“We’re just kids, Gil.” Chad soothed. “We’re all scared of something.” He gently grips Gil’s shoulder. “Can we help you get through this?”
Gil considers for a moment longer; then takes Aricka’s hand and nods. “Okay.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later, they would show the new students to their rooms and let them get settled, informing them about the agenda tomorrow: learning to access their allowances and managing their money wisely.
But that is a story for later.

A Darker History (Part 5)
Tumblr media
Ben stood in the gardens at the entrance of the school fiddling with the cuffs of his sleeves. He was nervous, in the next thirty minutes four children of some of the greatest villains in the land would be arriving from the Isle of the Lost to attend Auaradon Preparatory School. Not only that but he had lost the box of his aunts artifacts that he had been combing through and although no one was looking for it he assumed it would be burried or destroyed like most things about Aunt Grace.
It was an unspoken law in Auradon that no one talks about the queens sister, his father was especially enforcing about that rule - growing up he learned quickly that her very exhistance vexed him for unknown reasons. Finding the box was an accident in the first place and although he’d been through a bit of it he was afraid losing it was another door closed to the goal of understanding her.
He had no time to worry about it right now and going into deep thought would surely put him into another tail spin. All in all - not a good first impression for the VK’s on their way.
Thankfully someone pulled him out of it before he could ruminate on the miriad of baby and family photos he’d only glanced
A tap on his shoulder pulled him back to reality “Hey” the seemingly sweet voice of Audrey Rose Briar caught his attention. The daughter of Sleeping Beauty took her looks from her father, with her dark hair and tanned skin. Ben took a breath remembering where he was and the importance of what was about to happen. “Second thoughts?” She asked a little too eagerly.
“No, uh No, just a lot on my mind”
He took a deep breath and blinked putting his concern to the back of his mind. Right now - in this moment - he was King Ben. As he centred his thoughts the Royal car pulled around and the band struck up. Not his idea to be there but his fathers charginned request was not something he wanted to test and Audrey was too eager to organise it.
As the door opened four teenagers piled out to be met with loud, blaring drums and trumpets and hundreds of eyes leveled on them.
Mal and Evie were out first surveying the crowd, Evie smiled widely, grinning through the sharp pain in her ears. Mals face was more of a grimace, her eyes squinting from how bright it was and beads of sweat forming from the sun. She was used to glimpses of it but the clouds over her home always shrouded it enough to block out any real effect.
As Carlos and Jay tumbled out fighting over inane trinkets from the limousine the band played out abruptly and the hundreds of eyes started to feel like thousands as Mal was quick to hush them.
“Guys! We have company…” her eyes glanced back and forth between them and the crowd.
Fairy Godmother took this moment to emerge and break the growing tension.
“Welcome” she sang “welcome, to Auradon Prep, I am Head Mistress Verna, more commonly known as Fairy Godmother.”
Mal preened at her introduction “Fairy Godmother? As in ability Bopity Boo?”
“You know it” Her reservation was well hidden whilst talking to the child of Maleficent “The doors of wisdom are never closed, I’ll hand you off to King Ben for his proper introduction”
Before she completely turned away she eyed the two boys who had now righted themselves with their arms full with candy and Jay holding the limousines console in his hands.
He gave an accomplishing nod to her “Just cleaning up” he said cheekily.
Her eyes were a little more crinkled as she sang “ leave like you found it. And by that I mean just leave it” she forced out. Carlos turned pink and shrank back a bit, Jay followed in turning to dump their loot back in the car. Fairy Godmother nodded and turned back to pass through Ben and Audrey giving him a light pat on the shoulder “Good Luck”.
Ben nodded and his initial excitement resurfaced. Looking at his four guests, he smiled welcomely. He walked along to greet them.
“I won’t go over too much of what Fairy Godmother has said but I would like to extend that welcome and thank you for being here to take part in such a momentous occasion”
He walked along shaking their hands, getting caught off guard by Carlos’ sticky hands momentarily - he was relieved to discover it was chocolate. As he arrived at Evie he restarted as she curtsied.
“Today marks a day that two sides can come together and learn from their mistakes”
At that moment his eyes focused on the daughter of Maleficent, a snort had left her mouth at the same time Audrey behind him had released a mix between a scoff and a gasp at his words. Mals arms were crossed as he extended his hand and she begrudgingly accepted.
Before he could further continue, Audrey interjected quite loudly “Of course, we are so looking forward to atoning for past misdeeds” Her eyes narrowed at Mal “Your Maleficents daughter aren’t you?”
Audrey’s clipped tone didn’t go unnoticed as Ben flinched and Mal levelled her eyes at her.
“Yeah, and you are?”
“Audrey, Sleeping Beauty’s daughter” she answered proudly
“Huh wouldn’t have guessed, obviously skipped the beauty part” Evie pinched her arm at that and Mals gaze pointed annoyedly at her.
Audrey was immediately outraged but forced her smile nonetheless “And its remarkable how much you match the description my mother always said about yours, down to the crazy look in your eye” she smirked.
Mal was about to retaliate but Ben had taken this as the cue to regain control of the situation, he couldn’t bear his initiative receiving a bad headline in the first five minutes of the VK’s being here, much less his father proving him wrong.
“Why don’t I take you on a tour of the school and some of our facilities then you can get settled.” As they worked through the garden it was the first time Ben had realised the crowd had long dispersed and while facing away he breathed a little sigh.
A clap of hands and a yelp caused him to turn back to the scene at hand, Carlos had jumped into Jays arms and Mal and Evie were holding each other as they looked at the statue of King Adam that had changed into his beastly form. Audrey stood proud of herself with her hands clasped together in front of her still and he was quick to reassure the four.
“It’s okay, my fathers statue is spelled to change from beast to man, a special request of his, for all guests to the castle - to prove that anything is possible”
“Or to warn what’s lurking inside” Mal mumbled in Evie’s direction but he still caught it. Ben was starting to realise the true nature of tension that was growing as a result of this encounter.
“Yeah, you wouldn’t believe how much he sheds” he tried to joke, it was horrible but enough to lighten the mood and a small smile turned on Mals lips.
Ben turned to Audrey next “ Why don’t you run ahead and flag down Doug, he should have their schedules ready” He though it best to remove her attempts at vexing them as fast as he could.
She looked wide eyed at him for a second then cast her eyes down a bit indignantly. “Okay Benny” as she sauntered off. A flicker of annoyance past over him.
He turned back to the four who had watched the encounter cautiously, he regained his smile “Shall we continue?”
———————————————
He led the four through the basic amenities - cafeteria, lockers, the great hall and a few classes. As he passed one that was supposed to be empty he did a double take.
The room was a smaller version of the Concordant Auditorium where the various Kingdoms would convene. Sitting benches surrounded three of the walls of the room with a space cleared in the middle and a small podium stood on an elevated landing against the one bare wall which hung a chalk board.
The soul occupant stood behind the podium sorting papers and checking over a clipboard. Ben stood still and was genuinely shocked to see the woman standing there in her long pressed skirt, tucked blouse and open cut jacket, what panicked him most was the familiar butterfly broach pinned to her lapel.
All of these realisations took place within a few seconds but were outweighed by the striking question the ran through his mind ‘What is she doing here?’ .
“Don’t dawdle in doorways Benjamin” the woman said without looking up, the four VK’s were also shocked at the bluntness of the woman “People will think you’re up to no good”. Ben had to steel himself, he was honestly in awe of her stance, he’d never seen her in such a regal manner, it honestly reminded him of his parents.
Upon looking up she spotted his company “Ah you must be the new students” Placing down her papers on the podium she strides across the room to the open door and extended her hand to the four children in her sight.
“I’m Ms Villeneuve, and your names?”
The kids quietly murmured their names to the imposingly confident woman. Her hair was pulled back into a braided bun and her sunkissed skin made it look like she was glowing.
“Are you Grace Villeneuve?” Carlos blurted out. His friends stared at him weirdly and Ben side eyed him in shock, he made a note to ask him later. Grace looked on in wonder, she observed the boy and the obvious print of his family moniker.
She smiled kindly “Yes, it’s nice to know my name is not forgotten. I know this transition might be striking to you all, and my class no less, so if you ever need an ear my door is open”
“What do you teach?” Evie chimed in.
“Oh, I will be running the student caucus, open debate what it is, you’ll understand it more when you join the class - I should warn you to be ready to bare your teeth, moreover to practice your smile- I imagine you’ll need it”
Her comment was somewhat off putting, the juxtaposition of her kindness and warning was not something they were familiar with.
“Well, I won’t keep you, I’m sure Benjamin is soon to show you your quarters and with the eventful morning I’ve heard you had I suppose you would like to rest. Personally I think the trombones are always out of tune and far too loud” she joked. Ben couldn’t help but agree.
Her comment put them at ease and they nodded although they were all still unsettled in a way with the cryptic information she had provided along with Carlos’ unprompted knowledge of her.
Ben nodded “Yeah, um, I’m just on my way now” as he lead them away he turned to her privately and murmured “May I see you in my office this afternoon?”
Grace nodded lowly “of course” as he turned away she caught his attention one last time.
“And Ben, it is Yes, never yeah”
He gulped as he nodded and followed off down the hall to lead the group to their dorms.
———————————————
After the girls settled in their dorms with the curtains now drawn and the darkness bringing a semblance of familiarity they went down the hall to where the boys were.
Mal walked in first to see the boys had already settled and enamoured with the game system. With one stride she turned it off and her eyes settled on Carlos.
“How do you know that Grace chic Carlos?”
He visibly shrunk into himself and stuttered “I..I don’t…I must have heard it in passing” He wrung his wrists nervously.
A nervous tick of his that they had seen many times, usually brought on in relation to his mother. Evie intervened by squatting down and separating his hands to lay in his lap.
“Hey, it’s okay, she’s not here, you don’t have to say anything you don’t want to but is there something we should know?”
He shook his head rapidly, tears forming in his eyes and whispered softly “I..I can’t… She’ll know…she’ll know… she always knows” he groaned weakly as if in pain.
With that the three backed off, Mal wanted to press on but Jay gave her a look “We can talk about whatever else tomorrow” he said with finality.
He moved to shuffle the girls out of the room, Mals annoyance softened but was still prominent, her own anxieties of what her mother would say surfacing in her head. Evie was more reluctant to leave, looking back over her shoulder to Carlos. At this point, Carlos’ hands had returned to wringing his wrists bare. Jay made quick work moving them to the door.
He spoke mostly to Evie
“Go, I’ll make sure he’s okay”
With that the door closed and Jay returned to Carlos’ side, once again separating his hands and rubbing small circles on his back to calm him. After hours of reminding him that his mother was far away from him and he was okay did Carlos finally fall asleep and Jay sighed in relief.
He sat in the room quietly making sure his friend was okay. Occasionally trying to read some books stocked in the room until he too fell asleep.
Whatever was to come could wait till tomorrow.
———————————————
A darker turn of the initial characters finally touched upon. Hopefully you as readers appreciate the diverse individual directions I’m taking in story arcs.
Also, A little homage to Verna Felton who voiced the original Fairy Godmother as well as Flora from Sleeping Beauty.
As always, I appreciate a like, share and or comment

Ricevuto.

Carlos: Verna just came into my dorm and told me that I'm spending too much time on the internet so she told me "I'm sorry I have to do this, but it's for your own good...." and then she proceeded to delete the Internet Explorer icon from my desktop. I'm laughing so hard. And the way she said "I just deleted the internet" with a completely straight face just takes the cake holy fuck I can't breathe.

Risposta a Laura Boldrini
Ps.
