Kyle Van Noy, Carl Nassib Listed As FAs That Raiders Should Still Pursue
Should the Las Vegas Raiders consider bringing in more defensive help, in particular Carl Nassib and Kyle Van Noy?
We’re a few days away from Week 1 getting underway for the Las Vegas Raiders, so football is back. However, work on a roster is never done. Are there any free agents that general manager Dave Ziegler should still consider? Well, according to Bleacher Report, there are a few, two of them particularly for Patrick Graham’s defense. By all accounts, it doesn’t appear as though the Raiders are in the…

This is so cool! I've looked into out LGBTQIA+ active NFL players in the past and not found anyone. I definitely have a lot of respect and support for Carl Nassib, I've always wanted to feel more comfortable being queer as a fan of American football

"Being gay in the NFL is not an option.
Not really."
- the whole scene hits different, especially because it hits the truth.
I made the decision very early on that if I was going to write this fic, I wasn't going to ignore the homophobic reality these characters would be living in, so this is definitely not the last time we'll be talking about this.
I do want to note that, there actually has been an openly gay player in the NFL. Carl Nassib retired last year, but he came out in 2021 and, by all accounts, felt safe and supported by teammates and fans.
There is hope, but I know there is still so much fear.
It's definitely a huge topic to wrap into this story, and I really hope the elements I've woven in here feel real and honest. It just felt too important to leave out.

Thank you Billy Bean
Billy Bean (not Beane) was a professional baseball player. who played for the Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres and LA Dodgers. Much like the Billy Beane of "Moneyball" fame his playing career wasn't memorable. Of course the other Billy Beane became a top level executive known for building winning teams without much of a payroll. Billy Bean on the other hand became better known after his career was over however for a different reason.
After Billy Bean retired, he became the second player in baseball history to "Come Out". This was during the 1990s when there was more hate towards the LGBTQ+ Community as there is now. In recent years he became involved with Major League Baseball to help make the game more inclusive. I know there are fans that are against "Pride Nights" in general however I'm going to try to avoid any further mention as I don't want to go into politics. I will mention that every MLB team including the Yankees has had one at some point.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ Community, I've always believed that people should come out on their own terms. With that said and I know it sounds hypocritical however it would be nice to see some active pro players come out, especially to inspire those young athlete's that would like to play professional sports that are still in the closet. In the past both Jason Collins and Carl Nassib came out while they were still playing and a couple of MLS players came out while they were still in the league. Michael Sam came out in College and was the first gay player to be drafted however he didn't make the team. I hope one day that changes even if it's in the spirit of Billy Bean. May he rest in peace.

Would Carl Nassib be worthy of southernization?
After all he does play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers now
Ha! He’s definitely sexy, and already gay, so he could definitely be Southernized! Becoming a huge hunky Southern stud, dominating Yankees, becoming bigger, hunkier. Dominating Yankees alongside his teammates.

I think some of the fandom is too young to *really* understand the context of this. In the time that these books are set, being a gay athlete was NOT something that you talked about. It could and would lose you your contract and your career, and frankly the fact that there isn’t MORE casual homophobia is unrealistic because it was everywhere and all the time. There’s a reason a lot of shows that were coming out at the time had cringey queer coming out storylines—it was still extremely controversial to be queer and ESPECIALLY to tell queer stories that didn’t follow the Bury Your Gays trope. It was extremely important that people started seeing queer people and sitting in that discomfort because their reaction to us was violent and awful.
Also, within the context of sports, the first and only openly gay player in the NFL was Carl Nassib, who came out in *2021.* In division iii football, Conner Mertens was the first out player (he’s bi) and that was in 2014. The first out division i player was Chip Sarafin, also 2014.
In hockey, Luke Prokop was the first openly gay NHL prospect in 2021.
NBA, Jason Collins was the first out NBA player. He came out in 2013.
The MLB is kind of unique in that the first openly gay player was Glenn Burke, who played in the 70s. His team and management knew, and some fans figured it out and would call him slurs in the stands. His management once offered him a significant amount of money to marry a woman to end the whispering. He did not actually publicly come out until after he retired, and very little news of it traveled because nobody would talk about it on the news.
The next MLB player to come out was Billy Bean, who came out in 1999 after he retired. Then TJ House in 2022.
There were more queer players. Of course there were. But it simply was not safe to be out, and many of them still to this day will live in the closet at least until after they’ve become successful in their careers or have retired. Many of them will never come out at all.
Different career path, but I always think of the actor who played George in Grey’s anatomy. His name is T.R. Night, and he’s gay. The show aired in 2005. One of the biggest reasons George is killed off in the show? T.R wanted to be open about being gay and show runner Shonda Rhymes did not agree with him.
Like, it wasn’t until 2015 that the Supreme Court ruled that queer marriage bans were unconstitutional in Obergefell v. Hodges. Also, it wasn’t until *2003* that the Supreme Court ruled that state laws criminalizing queer sex were unconstitutional (Lawrence v. Texas). Before then, you could technically be tried for consensual gay sex in your own home, though it wasn’t something that really happened anymore. Those rights just weren’t cemented until I was in third fucking grade.
In my personal life, my partner would not hold my hand in public, even in places that were relatively queer friendly, as recently as 2015.
I’m glad younger readers don’t have the life experience to understand what being gay in the early 2000s was like. I’m glad they take Kevin’s comment out of context because that’s what makes the most sense to them, having never experienced it. But man, some of yall really would benefit from looking at the broader context and learning queer *very recent* history, because it does have a significant impact on this story and the people you’re engaging with every day who were there and who possibly lived through worse, if they’re older than lil ol me.
biggest pet peeve rn is people taking "it's easier to remain heterosexual" entirely out of context. no, Kevin was not on his high horse about the fact that he's straight. no, he was not telling Neil that being gay is wrong. i am holding you so gently by the shoulders.
"you know better than anyone how prejudiced people can be" (to nicky) literally said not 2 seconds after the first line
he's just looking out for him cuz he knows that his career is gonna be that much harder if he dates a man like i don't-
