Carl Grimes x GN! Reader

Summary: Carl grows concerned about you since you guys arrived in Alexandria.
Warnings: language
Pronouns: they/them
«────── « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ──────»
Getting adjusted to new environments wasn’t easy, especially for you. Ever since the prison fell apart, your group has been placed to place every night. You’re exhausted. Then, you were invited to a community called Alexandria
After Rick told the group we’re settling here, you were relieved but uneasy. You didn’t completely trust anyone that wasn’t your family. You held all of your trust in your loving boyfriend, Carl Grimes.
“Hey,” a hand waved in front of your face, pulling you out of your thoughts. “Are you alright?” Carl questioned.
“Oh yeah sorry, I’m good.” Reassuring him. He nods and he turns his direction back to his dad, Rick Grimes, who was holding a meeting for a scavenge.
“Glenn, I’m gonna have you be a getaway driver, you’re good with a wheel.” Rick began looking at Glenn who responded with a nod. “Daryl, I want you to keep watch for anyone or anything who is a threat.” Daryl hummed toward Rick. “And Carl, you’re with me. I’m gonna need help gathering supplies and taking out walkers.” Rick finished and started to wrap up the meeting, leaving you confused.
“Wait, what about me?” You sat up from the table gaining his attention. “I don’t know, Y/N. You’ve been-“ “C'mon, Dad. y/n is one of the best at runs. They barely leave with a mark. Plus, they say you have bad luck without them there.” Carl cut him off. You looked at Rick hoping he’d have you tag along. Carl was right, you were the best at getting in and out at scavenged fast. He signed in defeat. “Alright, fine, you’re with me and Carl.” After that, everyone got ready and headed out of the Alexandrian walls.
———————————
After driving out for what felt like forever, you arrived at an abandoned Pharmacy that didn’t look like it had been touched. Me, Carl, and Rick stepped out of the car while Glenn stayed. Daryl helped us clear out the walkers outside the building while Carl and Rick took care of the ones inside. While they did that, I scanned the area to make sure no one else was there.
“We’re clear,” I spoke towards the Grimes. With that, we went around the store looking for supplies we needed. Deanna gave you the list earlier. You were walking around the isles and suddenly stepped on glass, it was a mirror. “Shit.” You whispered to yourself then you saw yourself in the mirror. Your eyes were red.
The state you were desperate to hide is now noticeable: Exhaustion.
“Hey, are you okay?” Carl questioned. You looked up at him, not thinking about him seeing your eyes. “Yeah I just stepped on glass and it startled me, that’s all.” You walked past him continuing your hunting for the supplies, leaving Carl concerned. “Carl, did you find- what’s going on?” Rick asked putting a hand on Carl’s shoulder making the boy turn to the man. “Nothing, Y/N is just acting a little strange today.”
“How so?” Rick asked. “Well, I caught them spacing out during the meeting and just now, they brushed off my question and I noticed their eyes.” After Carl stated that, Rick started to walk towards you, “Y/N,” you turned towards the grown man. “I want you to sit in the car with Glenn.”
“What?! Why?!” You said with an angered tone. “Because I said so, now go.” Rick pointed towards the car. You scoffed and left the store.
“What was that for? They didn’t do anything!” Carl shouted making Rick turn and walk towards him. “Don’t yell. We don’t want to draw attention to ourselves. Let’s just finish up in here and get home.” Carl sighed, continuing to help out his dad.
———————————
“Carl, let’s go, the sun is going down and we still have a long drive ahead of us,” Rick said grabbing the bag of all of the supplies they found. Daryl came out of hiding once Rick announced they were done. “Ya got what we need?” Daryl spoke. “Let’s hope. Deanna wasn’t too specific. Let’s head out.” Daryl hummed in response and hopped onto his motorcycle and started the engine waiting for Carl and Rick to get into the car behind him.
Carl hopped into the back seat and saw you. Your head was leaning against the window. He slightly shook your shoulder and noticed you were asleep. Rick got into the passenger seat and turned his head looking at you and back at Carl. “Thank god. Alright, Glenn, let’s get the hell out of here.” With that, Glenn started the car and drove off with Daryl leading.
After a few minutes on the road, Carl broke the silence. “Dad, why did you look at Y/N and said, “thank god?” He spoke. “Don’t worry, it’s nothing,” Rick responded, looking ahead. With that, Carl started to get angry.
“Worry?! I’m concerned! Y/N has been acting weird all day and you’ve been a complete dick to them for no reason!” Yelling at his dad, making Rick turn toward him. “If you’re concerned, maybe you shouldn’t raise your voice while they're sleeping right next to you!” Rick whispered yelling at his son. “Just cut the shit! Tell me! What is wrong with MY partner?!” silence filled the air, so quiet Carl could hear your breathing. “Rick,” Glenn interrupted. “Carl needs to know. He is Y/N’s boyfriend.”
Here’s the thing, Rick sees you as family, especially since you are dating his son and are still a kid to him. He’s secretive for the right reasons, and that’s to protect his loved ones. But, he knew Carl would be able to help you in this situation.
“Y/N…hasn’t been sleeping, at all,” Rick admitted. Carl sat there, waiting for context. “I don’t know why, but I’ve noticed them taking night watch hours on end and even taking others' places. Anything to avoid sleep, they’d do it.” Rick took a breath. “And, when you mentioned their eyes, I knew it had gone on for too long.” He finished.
Carl signed. How could he not have noticed his own lover was struggling?
“Thank you for telling me,” Carl responded after a minute of silence. Carl looked over at you, who was still sleeping. He moved your head to lay it on his shoulder, hoping it would make you relax more than the car window. Relief fell over him when he felt your breathing against his neck, you were finally getting some rest. Then, you started to snore.
“Woah! Didn’t know they snored!” Glenn giggled. Making Rick cackle as well. Carl smiled, “Hey! It’s never this bad!” He jokingly defended. “Just be happy they haven’t heard you. Their usually a light sleeper.” With that response, the grown men quickly shut up. Before this, if anyone would wake you up, hell broke loose.
———————————
You guys arrived back in Alexandria, it was around 11 p.m. Daryl parked his motorcycle and waited for you, Rick, and Carl. Glenn said his good nights to everyone and headed towards his shared house with his wife, Maggie. Everyone was out of the car, except you.
“I’ll wake them up-“ “hell no, man. Are you asking for an ass beatin’?” Daryl intruded on Rick stopping his hand from touching you. “Well, what do you want me to do? Let them sleep in a car that’ll grow humid?” Rick spoke with sarcasm. “I got it,” Carl spoke up.
He then started to lift you up from the back seat and started to carry you, supporting your back and knees. Your body began to adjust to the position and you rested your head on his shoulder. Carl then started to walk towards the front door. “Strong kid,” Daryl spoke to Rick once Carl took you into the house. “like father like son.”
After carrying you up the stairs, he walked into your room and settled you in bed. He removed your socks and shoes and pulled the blanket over you. Once you were settled, he kissed your forehead goodnight and started to leave.
“Carl..?” He turned around and saw you half awake. He thought you looked so cute in that state but he knew you needed sleep. “Hey, it’s okay, just go back to sleep.” He whispered softly putting a hand on your cheek. “Sleepover? Please?” You muffled, holding his hand on your cheek, looking at him with sleepy eyes. He grinned, “How could I ever say no to that face?”
Carl got comfortable and stepped into bed with you. He put his arm over you, spooning you. “I’m sorry…” you whispered. “Don’t apologize, hun. We’ll talk in the morning, okay? Just go to sleep.” You hummed in response and you fell asleep. He kissed your cheek, “Goodnight, my Y/N”
————————————
“Here you go. Got what you needed.” Rick handed the bag of supplies in front of Deanna. She went through the bag and looked at Rick with confusion. “How did you manage to get nothing on the list?” Rick also got confused. “Wait, what list?” “The list I gave to Y/N. They said you shouldn’t have the list because you have bad luck.” Deena chuckled at the end. “I guess you could say that.”

Warm
Carl Grimes x Fem!reader
Fluff, blood, cramps (like, very, VERY bad cramps), comfort and loads of sweetness from Carl. (Most prolly ooc)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
It was that time of the month you feared again, your period was one of the things you hated the most in the world, bleeding wasn't even that bad, the cramps were.
You had found out you were on your period that morning when you woke up in pain, your lower belly felt like it was being constantly stabbed, ripped apart by something sharp from the inside, and lucky for you, you had stirred your boyfriend awake too.
"What's wrong?" His voice was raspy and groggy, still laced with sleep as he rubbed his eye, looking at the way you remained sat in bed while holding your pelvic area, his eyebrows quickly furrowing in concern. "Is it that time of the month? Are the cramps bad?"
You can't help but nod at his questions, too preoccupied with your pain to actually want to try and mouth a reply for him, and he understands it, if you hated your period cramps he hated them ten times more, he couldn't stand seeing you suffer, and even less when it was a pain he couldn't really help with taking away.
Carl sits up and gently reaches forward for you, his touch soft on your skin as he makes you lay down again, switching places in bed as he checks for any kind of leakage you may have had in your sleep, he notices the stain and is quick to lift you up from the bed. "C'mon we gotta get you clean, alright? I'll change the bedsheets too."
He carries you to the bathroom, setting you down on the toilet, taking off the flannel he had used to sleep and placing it around your lower belly to provide some warmth to ease your cramps a bit as he starts the water to run you a bath, "just wait for a little, alright love?" he kisses your forehead tenderly before disappearing into the room for a couple of minutes, changing the bedsheets. Returning just in time to turn the water off, checking the temperature before helping you out of your pajamas, being mindful of your comfort as he tries not to stare too much or do anything you wouldn't want him to. "I can get inside myself."
He shakes his head, clearly not accepting that. "Nope, I don't want you passing out on me or something because you tried to tough it off, let me take care of you right now, please." You sigh and reluctantly accept, being carried and carefully set down inside the tub, the hot water soothing your swollen pelvic area.
Carl bathed you gently, his touch caring and sweet as he washed you, and now he had taken the mission of dressing you comfortably, a pair of new underwear along with a pad, his sweatpants and one of his t-shirts. "Where did you get a pad?" He smiles sheepishly, looking up at you "I asked Michonne for one for you, she gave me a couple more too."
You muster up a smile through the pain, Carl was always so sweet, so caring, when it came to you. "Thanks."
As Carl eases you back into bed and tucks you in you try and relax a little, but the pain is overwhelming even if you were already kinda used to it, and Carl knows that, so he's quick to pepper kisses on your face before leaving to go downstairs to the kitchen, returning shortly after with a plate of pancakes that were probably cooked by Michonne, a bag of hot water and a chocolate bar he was saving up in the freezer.
"Alright baby, let me take care of you." His hands are gentle as he places the bag of water over your lower belly, taking a seat beside you on the bed and feeding you patiently, helping to try and ease your pain through every painful cramp with kisses and sweet words.
[...]
"I can't take it, I hate this." You say softly and start sobbing, it had been hours and your pain only seemed to be getting worse, and Carl couldn't help but feel his heart ache for you. "It's alright, pretty girl, it's alright baby, let me get you a cup of tea and make you warm, that will help."
It doesn't take more than five minutes for Carl to be back with a hot cup of tea for you, which he places between your hands to let you drink at your own pace, he had also gotten you a couple pills of painkillers of his own that he had been given after his eye got shot off, it wouldn't take all the pain away, but he hoped to make it better.
As you finish drinking the tea and swallow the pills you ease back onto the mattress, hiccuping slightly from crying before as Carl envelopes his arms around you, warmth, that's what he provided, and you loved feeling warm with his love and care.
"I love you, Carl" you whisper as you let your head rest on his shoulder, your arms around his neck as he cups your lower back, gently massaging it. "I love you too, baby."
You drift off into a peaceful slumber, and so does he when he senses you're better now, and how to not be? If he kept you so warm and comforted, you felt like even the greatest pain eased between his arms.
Tumblr media
What the fuck did I do help. Anyways, I'm bouta die from my own cramps, so this is for all the cramping girlies.
Also, deadass wanted to make Carl play-punch reader in the lower belly to say some corny ahh shit like "evil cramps, leave my princess alone" 💀

The hat
Summary: reader goes missing and only leaves one sign of life: the sheriff’s hat Carl had given to her.
Tw: angst, gore, walkers (both characters are 18!!)
Rick grimes’ sheriff’s hat had been passed down many times. And Carl took it upon himself to give it to you, as a sign of protection of some kind. Carl when he was little always stated that when his dad would wear the hat then he would be protected from all the violence in the world, and in some ways he was correct… but all of that hope and belief turned into some sort of horror as soon as Carl stumbled upon the sheriff’s hat left discarded on the floor.
“Y/n!!” Carl yelled as he ran around desperately searching for you, running upstairs of the home and downstairs, the gated community of Alexandria was safe.. always.. but you’d never leave without telling him. The hat was held in his hand before he eventually put it down on top of his head as he sprinted back downstairs palm skimming lightly against the banister before he stumbled outside seeing Rick talking to michonne. “Dad!!” Carl practically screamed, making the former sheriff’s head snap in his direction seeing the sheer fright on his sons face “woah… what’s wrong?” His hand came to rest against carls shoulder to try and calm him down “y/n’s missing!”
“Missing?” Rick spoke confused, Carl nodding breathing heavily “I found the hat discarded… I looked all around but I can’t find her. I asked Eugene and Rosita but they said they didn’t see her go out.” Rick’s face twisted with concern, his hand coming up to rub against his forehead, pinching against the bridge of his nose “she doesn’t just leave she would’ve told me!” Carl spoke with wide worried eyes, Rick nodding, hand quickly tentatively grabbing onto the boys shoulder “I know. I know it’s unlike her. I’ll get a few people to go out and look for her. She couldn’t of gone far.” And as Carl’s lips parted Rick only shook his head already knowing what he was going to say. “No. You stay here… I know how much you love that girl. I don’t want you getting hurt by jumping into action..” he spoke simply, Carl disliked that, but knew damn well his dad was right. And so he would just have to sit and wait around for good news.
Hours had passed by and although multiple search groups had been sent out, they had returned empty handed and now it was dark. The sheriffs hat was still planted firmly upon Carl’s head. He couldn’t sit still. He couldn’t calm down either. You and Carl were best friends, you had been best friends for a long long time even before the apocalypse and now with you missing he was beyond terrified for you.
Carl had dinner with his dad and michonne, not being able to eat much- too nervous. “Do you think she’s dead?” He questioned, Rick giving him an almost warning look to not give up before silently shaking his head. No one else spoke a word, as often times if you speak of something you fear then it will happen. Even as dinner was finished and everyone went to bed, Carl remained wide awake, now sat upon his bed packing a bag. He wasn’t going to give up. He was going to find you. As he zipped up his bag he threw it over his shoulder, opening the bedroom window and carefully climbing out, carefully so, until he felt his feet hit the floor before he immediately but quickly fled towards the gates that were left unattended, he silently slipped out of the gate shutting it behind himself before he began the long hike to try and find you.
-
Carl walked for ages and now it was pitch black, he continued searching around for you, but it was practically impossible to find you. He was growing worried and more sure about the fact that you had been killed until he heard an abrupt scream- his head snapping in the direction of the sound before he began sprinting wasting no time to come to this persons rescue hoping it was you. He saw and heard walkers all around but he didn’t stop, until he blindly slammed into something or rather someone. He feared it was a Walker but as he pulled back and saw your familiar face, dirty and mucky his eyes widened “y/n!” He exclaimed his eyes remaining wide, watching as your eyes teared up “Jesus Christ where were you?!” His hands came to caress against your face the groaning of incoming walkers getting closer and closer but Carl was in too much shock.
“I wanted to impress Daryl. By hunting a deer… he has been teaching me all these techniques and tricks to follow the markings on the ground but.. I— I guess I’m not ready.” Carls brows furrowed, but he knew how you always critiqued yourself way too often and constantly wanted to impress “fuck y/n.” He murmured shaking his head before he stood up grabbing onto your hands and pulling you up, instantly noticing the limp you had but he didn’t question it, instead wrapping your arm around his shoulder as he began helping lead you away from the herd of walkers. Your breathing was heavy as you gripped onto him “I- I just wanted to try and be an adult.” You spoke to him quietly “well you’re not. And if you keep pulling dangerous shit like this you’ll get yourself killed!” His words were harsher than they intended to be, and he immediately felt guilty for the way he spoke to you, murmuring an apology to you as he helped guide you somewhere safe.
-
Eventually the two of you found an old abandoned house, in the middle of no where. He helped you sit down before he sat down keeping his eyes on you worried and upset before he shook his head “you could’ve been killed.” He murmured and you nodded slightly embarrassed before looking down. He exhaled softly before he pulled the hat from his head and slowly popped it back onto your head leaning in to press a kiss to your cheek “next time you do that… wear your hat.” He spoke with a small smile, hand caressing against your cheek.
“Okay… deal..” you said with a small smile, you knew Rick and michonne were going to kill you and murder Carl for being this stupid. “You missed by the way.” You spoke with a playful grin and Carl raised his brows before you puckered your lips making Carl laugh “god you’re unbelievable sometimes.” He muttered before nonetheless leaning in and kissing you on the lips gently. “My dads gonna kill me.” He murmured against your lips and you smiled “oh no.” You spoke sarcastically a playful offended look appearing on carls face before he rolled his eyes “unbelievable.” He chuckled shaking his head.
(Part two on reuniting Rick and michonne+ their reaction?? Maybe? Lmk!!)
This took me forever to get out. Im sorry!!!

Carl Grimes x N! Reader Hurt/Comfort
WARNINGS: Character death, Gore, Parental figure death, Yelling, Fighting, Panic attacks, Non-sexual nudity, Emotional turmoil, Swearing.
︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵
The rocks underneath my knees threaten to cause my collapse. I feel bright lights being shone directly into my eyes, only adding to the heat that the now far gone sun added to the Georgia air. There are several strange men surrounding me and my loved ones, each holding a grim, serious face.
Suddenly, a man in a leather jacket steps forward. He appears to be carrying around a baseball bat with barbed wire wrapped around it. He swings it around with an unearned confidence- acting as if the thing isn’t dangerous.
I begin to slip into my own mind while my fear overwhelms me. I start to think about all of my important memories as realization of my own possible death takes it’s grip on me. All of me and Carl’s precious moments together. Babysitting Judith, cuddling while reading comics, surviving out in some of the worst conditions- but doing it together. All of that would just be gone. I lift my head and look to my right, catching Carl’s eye. The tears that had been unknowingly filling my sight begin to drop. This might be the last time I get to see Carl.
My train of thought is rigorously interrupted by the man introducing himself to us: Negan. I can’t help but scowl at the sound of his name, disgust and hatred taking their place within my mind. He begins to walk around, discussing our past actions and the killing of his men. I let my anger and boldness get the best of me.
“Of course we killed your men! They were a danger to us!”
Negan suddenly turns his head towards me, slightly leaning back while he raised his bat in my direction.
“Well shit! Looks like we have a little talker over here! Isn’t that adorable?”
I look him dead in the eyes, tears still dripping down my face. I turn my head to look at Carl, who has a worried gleam in his eye. He shakes his head at me softly, begging me not to continue. I can’t help but listen to his please, knowing how much turmoil we are both already in. I look back up at Negan again- only to place my head back down towards the ground. He chuckled and continues down the line, seemingly attempting to choose a target.
“That’s what I thought, kid. Now! I do have to kill one of you in return of the men I lost. Only fair right. And I’m thinking you.”
Negan points his bat towards Abraham. Rosita and Eugene cry out, unable to contain the emotion tugging at their souls. I feel my own sobs start to come out, thinking of how life would be without him. All of those times he’s saved me, saved the group. It all is going to be lost.
“Suck. My. Nuts.”
With that, Negan’s bat comes down on Abraham’s skull and creates a bloody mess in front of everyone. Despite Abraham already being incredibly disfigured, Negan doesn’t stop. The sound of the weapon gliding through the air and hitting the remains of Abraham creates a loud thud, adding to the disturbing essence of the situation. I feel nausea creep up my throat- my eyes not letting my look away from the terrible sight. My breathing labors and I feel utterly powerless. Seeing someone you loves life being taken away right in front of you is never easy. Dread fills me as Negan then makes his way over to Glenn; the man who took care of me the most.
Glenn and Maggie were always there for me, taking me in as their own when it seemed like no one else would. They had ensured my safety indefinitely; never even letting me get close to a walker bite. Glenn had especially been protective, saving me from disaster after disaster. Together they took the place of the parents I had lost so long ago. My throat tightens- not ready to go through such a loss again.
“NO! Don’t hurt him! Please..” I sob out, scrambling onto my feet to go run to Glenn. I am quickly stopped by two of Negan’s men, holding me back from saving Glenn.
Negan shakes his head and looks me in the eyes, swiftly pulling away while he forces his bat onto Glenn. I can’t hold back my sobs while I struggle against the men, desperately trying to break free despite Glenn already being long gone. When Negan is finished he whistles at the men, signaling them to drop me.
I am roughly dropped on my knees again, my head feeling heavier by the second as the overwhelming grief fills my mind. Rage soon takes its place when Negan grabs my face roughly and forces me to look at him.
“Fuck you! Look what you’ve done. You’re disgusting! I hope you rot in hell when I get the privilege to finally kill you.” I spat out, not even daring to look away from him.
He shoved me back into the ground with a grimace on his face, clearly passed at my lack of fear.
“Well, you’ve given me no choice, kid. I can’t have a mouth like that running around here. Where’s my respect, huh?”
I look down at the ground, readying myself for the intense pain about to come. The shadow on the ground reveals Negan lifting his bat, preparing to end my life. Out of all the ways I thought I would die, this was certainly not one of them. I hear the whip of the bat coursing through the air, flinching at the sound.
I am met with no pain, rather a horrid laugh ringing through my ears.
“Shit, kid! I can’t kill you after a badass line like that! We will see about next time, though. Alright men! Pack it up!”
The tears start to stream down my face at a rapid pace while Negan and his men begin to drive off into the night. I can’t control the noises escaping me, a mix of sobs and screams erupting from my throat. I’m breathing heavily, and it hits me that I’m having a panic attack. Normally, Glenn is one of the few people that could calm me down. But he’s gone now. He’s gone forever.
I feel my vision go blurry with each choked breath that struggles it’s way through my lungs, and before I know it the work goes black.
——————————————————————————
I slowly open my eyes, instantly recognizing the room I am in. It’s Carl and I’s room, filled with comics and dumb collections we’ve developed from scavenging over the years. I can still feel the wetness crowding my eyes- memories of earlier in the night filling my head. More tears threaten to fall, until a loud slam of a door rings into the room.
“What the hell were you thinking? What’s wrong with you?!”
I recognize the voice as Carl, and I begin to hyperventilate again. I can’t stand those cruel words, especially not coming from him. Especially not now.
“Please. I…”
“Save it. You’re so dumb, do you know that? You could’ve gotten yourself killed! We sure as hell don’t need another death.” Carl announces as he interrupts me.
I don’t find the strength to respond, only sobbing harder into my arms. Every emotion suddenly came crashing into me. It felt like someone was tearing my heart out. I can feel my rigid and cold body begin to shake at all of the exertion on my body. I long for someone, anyone to help. I feel so powerless. Even though Carl is in the room with me, I feel alone. There is something missing in me that I am afraid I will never get back. Flashbacks of watching Glenn die replay in my head, and another panic attack overwhelms every part of my very being.
“I.. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I’m sorry!” I begin to choke out, chanting the phrase as if it’s the only words I know.
Carl’s expression softens, realizing what he has done to the person he loves the most. He quickly makes his way over to me- desperate to fix what he had broken.
“Oh no no.. sweetheart I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you. It’s gonna be okay. It’s not your fault.” Carl whispers softly as he pulls me into his arms, holding me impossibly close to him.
I lean into his touch, feeling comforted by the support of my beloved boyfriend. I turn my head to his chest and allowed my tears to stain his shirt, grabbing on to him for dear life. His hand reaches to the top of my head, gently petting my hair. I begin to calm down, my hyperventilating soon turning into shallow, choked breaths.
“It’s okay.. I forgive you. I love you, Carl. I’m glad you’re okay.”
His arms wrap around me tighter as he kissed the top of my head. The once empty hole i felt within myself feels a little less painful, and the soothing fact that I am loved seeps into my once tense muscles.
“I love you too, baby. It’s all gonna be okay. I’m right here. You’ve been through so much.”
I nod softly and remove my head from his chest, looking up at him. I find myself getting lost in his blue eyes, slowly leaning closer to him. Our lips connect in a sweet kiss, filled with passion and apologies.
“Let’s go get you cleaned up, ‘kay?”
I nod once again and allow Carl to take me into his arms, carefully lifting me up and walking us over to the bathroom. He sets me down on the counter and makes his way to the bath- turning the water on so that it may fill the tub. I watch with tired eyes as he searches through the bathroom cabinets, eventually pulling out a small bath bomb with a look of pride. I feel a smile creep onto my face at the sight.
“Where in the world did you get that?”
He giggles and begins to open it, the sweet lavender aroma filling the room.
“On a run quite a bit ago. Wanted to save it for a special occasion. I think our day calls for a bit of soothing, yeah?”
I nod in agreement and watch as he places the bath bomb gently into the tub, turning the water off shortly after. He walks over to me and kisses me on the top of my head, places his hands on my waist. He looks at me for permission and gently removes my clothes, doing the same to his own once mine were littered on the bathroom floor.
I get off of the counter and wait for him to get into the bathtub, joining him moments later with his delicate guidance and help. We both settle in and i lay my back against his chest- the warm water soothing my aching muscles. Carl then grabs some shampoo and begins to massage it into my scalp, turning his head to look at me with a soft smile. I look back at him and smile back. I can’t wait to cuddle up with him in our warm bed, safe in his arms.
︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵
First request! I hope you liked it!! This was a very emotional write, but I hope the comfort at the end is worth it. Thank you for the request <3

everything was normal again. well, as normal as it could get nowadays. you had came from woodbury to the prison after the governor had abandoned you along with the other residents. you and carl had gotten very close since you arrived. the two of you immediately found that you had something in common, reading comics. hell, that's how the two of you met. you walked over to the library and found some comics, and then carl spotted you, immediately sparking a conversation about the wolverine comic that laid in your hands. the two of you got very close. you thought you were finally safe again. that thought was quickly challenged after the governor came back, but this time, to the prison. with new fighters on his side, too. you heard the commotion and ran towards it with carl by your side, and the two of you witnessed hershel getting his head cut almost completely off. then everyone began shooting on both sides, causing walkers to get attracted to the sound and start roaming through the prison yards. you stood right next to carl, attempting to help shoot at the walkers despite having barely any training. you hadn't been at the prison for very long. so much had happened since you had arrived, you didn't get a chance to learn how to shoot properly. you were shaking. i mean, who wasn't? all of you guys had just seen a man-- the only doctor you guys had-- get brutally murdered. you ran out of ammo quickly due to the quick frantic shots you were taking that you had missed. "fuck." you muttered, trying to reload the gun as fast as possible. but, just as you finished loading it, you heard a loud bang, followed with a sharp, a brutal pain rushed up through the side of your torso, through your cotton zip-up shortly after. you froze, your eyes widening and your body shaking. you looked around for help, but everyone was too busy fighting again the walkers and the governors new people. your hand flung to your side that was now beginning to gush with blood, and you knew you had to move. you took off your jacket as the heat began becoming unbearable as you limped off to cover slowly. you leaned down, back against the wall, holding your side tightly with one hand while covering your winces up with the other as you sat down. an obnoxious ringing began playing through your ears and your vision began going in waves from clear to blurry. you looked around and everyone seemed to be dispersing, but you couldn’t tell from the glare that had started appearing in your eyes. but then, the ringing quited down, and a familiar voice began tuning in.
“theres her jacket — where is she?!” the voice yelled over the gunshots, breaking as if the person was crying. “..theres blood.” you coughed loudly, your voice becoming scratchy after your silent sobs. “…carl?” you heard footsteps running towards you. you blinked frantically, trying to clear your vision to see who or what was coming at you, when a familiar sheriffs hat came into view. “holy shit.” he crouched down to your level, taking in your bloodied and bruised appearance with his hands on your shoulders. the two of your jolt your heads to the side at the sound of an explosion in the distance. “we.. have to go.” you tried standing up, but the attempt quickly failed as the pain shot through your whole body right as you tried lifting yourself up, causing you to lose balance. carl catches you before you could fall.
“don’t get up, you’ll make it worse.” he sets you back down carefully, putting pressure on your gunshot wound and looking around for his dad. “we need to get you in a car.” “i can’t move, carl.” you shook your head with a scoff, closing your eyes tightly as the pain worsened. he stares at you, wide-eyed in fear, watching you bleed out as the blood stains his shaking hand. he moves his hand off of your side and places your hand back onto the wound before picking you up bridal style, turning around with you gently in his arms to look for his dad. your vision began turning from blurry to black the more steps carl took. he glances down at you with a frown, a tear falling from his eye and onto your face. "stay with me. please." his voice shook. "try and stay awake."
those were the last words you heard before you blacked out. ... you heard a sniffle. "you couldn't protect judith. you couldn't protect.. hershel or glenn or maggie. michonne, daryl, or mom. you couldn't protect y/n." the familiar voice angrily spoke. "you just wanted to plant vegetables. you just wanted to hide. he knew we were here and you didn't care! you just hid behind those fences and waited for... they're all gone now. because of you! they counted on you! you were their leader! but now, you're nothing."
you slowly opened your eyes, and though your vision was foggy, you could make out carl standing next to the couch in front of you, yelling at an unconscious rick.
"i'd be fine if you died."
as you heard him say that last line, the pain shot back through your body, causing you to wince loudly. carl quickly turns his head around to face you, his eyes wide and glossy and his mouth agape. he brings up a hand to cover his mouth as he slowly walks over to you.
"oh- oh my god." he cries, kneeling down to look at you. "how.. how are you feeling?"
you laughed, which caused the pain to come back quickly and your hand fell to your wound. "...not good."
he frowns. "i tried to patch it up. i-i don't really have any experience with bandaging up wounds, but i found a little bit of medical stuff. i tried."
"thank you." you smiled up at him, but you quickly frowned at the sight of the dried blood on his hands. your dried blood on his hands. "...i'm sorry."
"for what?" he raised an eyebrow as he moved a hand up to tuck your hair behind your ear.
"putting you through that." you pointed towards his hands then back at the side of your torso.
"it wasn't your fault. you didn't get shot on purpose." he reassured. his face was twitching as he tried to refrain from crying.
your eyes averted to rick, laying unconscious on the couch. his face was battered and bruised. "...you were yelling at him."
a guilty expression appeared on carls face as he looked away.
"why?"
he shook his head. "i.. i don't want to talk about it."
you wanted to persist, push the answer out of him, but by his expression and the things you heard him say? you knew the timing was wrong. "okay." you sighed. "i'm here when you're ready to talk."
he nodded with a smile, but quickly he jumped up and grabbed his bag. "i, uh, found your jacket." he said as he pulled the cloth out.
you smiled, weakly grabbing it from his hands. "thank you." you said with a laugh, carefully putting it on.
"i'm... i- i don't.." the boy stuttered.
"hm?"
"i don't... know what i'd do if you had died back there." his voice was wobbly and his hands were shaking.
you smiled at him as you felt your eyes get watery. you carefully leaned over and hugged him tightly, to which he quickly returned.
"when i saw you sitting down in a pool of your own blood, i felt so guilty. you were right by my side, and i let you get shot. it made me really realize that i can't lose you." he hugged you tighter. "you're my best friend, and more. i love you, y/n. more than anything."
you were shocked by his words, feeling the true genuineness behind them. "i.. i love you too."
he broke from the hug and stared at you, cupping your face in his hands before leaning into a quick kiss. your guys' first kiss.
it felt like paradise, like going home after a day of chaos. the two of you broke from the kiss, staring at each other with rose-colored cheeks. a smile began forming on your face, which transferred to his. the two of you laughed together, in the comfort of each others presence as you awaited whatever was going to come after this whole situation.
you had each other now, and that's all that mattered.

Carl Grimes (SH COMFORT)
Requested by emluvsmusic on Wattpad: heyyyyy, so i was thinking Carl could comfort an insecure user or an sh comfort please? maybe he sees y/n acting off and slowly catches on with her behavior and insecurities?
⊱ ────── {.⋅ ✯ ⋅.} ────── ⊰
You wouldn't tell. You just couldn't. It wasn't Carl's problem, right?
Your train riddled with thoughts was interrupted by Carl saying, "Y/N, are you alright? You seem out of it."
"Yeah, I'm fine, Carl," You shot him a sweet smile, hiding the pain in your eyes.
Carl nodded, but a hint of skepticism in his eyes remained. "You know, if you ever want to talk... I'm here, okay?" You smiled. "Of course, thanks, Carl."
⊱ ────── {.⋅ ✯ ⋅.} ────── ⊰
You hid your secret very well. No one knew. Not even Carl. But you had a strange feeling that he was catching on. Slowly, but you had a feeling he knows.
Or maybe you were paranoid. I mean, it is the end of the world, right? The days and night are the same.
It was another chilly evening that you spent, cooped up in your room, a room you shared with Carl. You opened the window, the air was chilly but soothing. You heard a knock on the door. "Come in!" You said.
"Hey." It was Carl. He leaned against the doorframe. "I need to talk to you, love." He shut the door behind him. He sat down next to you.
You gulped. "So, what's up?"
"You."
Straightforward.
"I... fuck. How do I put it... Shit! I know. I saw your scars yesterday. You rolled up your sleeves to wash your hands... and that's when I saw them."
For a moment, the crickets stopped chirping. The wind went into a brief halt. But that was only for a moment.
"Carl... I don't know what to say..." He smiled knowingly. "You don't have to say a thing. I... just wanted to check up on you. I don't want you to feel bad, okay?"
"I'm sorry... If I talk, I feel like I'm burdening you with my problems. Fuck!" A tear rolled down your eye, but it was gently wiped away by Carl. He lifted your chin up with a finger. "You are not a burden to me, okay? I care. I care a lot."
You smiled. Carl was an amazing person.
"Why?"
You knew what he meant by the question. "I felt... alone. And worthless. I'm a mess." You let out a sad chuckle.
"No, you're not. I'm here for you, okay? I will always be here. You can always talk to me. You are not alone, okay?" You nodded and he pulled you into a swift hug.

A Bitter Goodbye
Carl Grimes x bitten reader.
Tumblr media
The sun was setting, casting a blood-red glow over the barren landscape. Carl Grimes and you had been scavenging for supplies, staying vigilant as the world around you continued to crumble. Your group was camped out in a small, abandoned house, trying to catch a moment's respite from the relentless terror outside.
You and Carl had grown close over the years, a bond forged in the fires of survival and shared trauma. His blue eye, once bright with youthful innocence, now held a hardened resolve, yet there was still a softness reserved just for you. You found solace in each other, a small flicker of hope in an otherwise dark world.
As you both moved through the deserted street, keeping low and quiet, the sudden sound of rustling and low growls filled the air. Carl’s hand shot up, signaling for you to stop.
"Walkers," he whispered, his voice tense.
You nodded, gripping your knife tightly. The two of you crept forward, trying to see how many there were. The horde was larger than expected, and you exchanged a worried glance with Carl.
"We need to get out of here," he said, eyes darting around for an escape route.
But it was too late. A group of walkers stumbled out from an alley, blocking your path. Panic surged as more of them emerged, drawn by the noise.
"Carl!" you screamed as 3 walkers lunged at you.
Carl swung his gun around, firing off shots that dropped walkers instantly. But in the chaos, one managed to grab you, its rotting teeth sinking into your arm before Carl could react. Pain exploded through you, and you cried out, stabbing the walker in the head with all your strength. It's jaw loosened around your arm, and you managed to break free, taking down 2 more walkers before inspecting your arm.
"Y/N!" Carl's voice was desperate as he fought off the remaining walkers, eventually clearing a path. He grabbed your uninjured arm, pulling you away to safety.
You stumbled into a nearby building, barricading the door behind you. Carl’s face was pale, his eyes wide with fear as he looked at the bite on your arm.
"No, no, this can’t be happening," he whispered, his voice breaking.
You slumped against the wall. "Carl, I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have been this stupid."
He shook his head, dropping to his knees beside you. "Don’t say that. We’ll figure something out. We’ll—"
"Carl, you know what this means," you interrupted, your voice trembling. "There’s no coming back from this."
"No! No, no, no! There has to be a way out of this." His voice cracked as he struggled to accept the truth.
"Carl, please," you cried, "Please, just sit with me. Just calm down." He complied, sitting crouching next to you. He knew if he sat down, he'd never get up. He would accept any walker that came his way, as long as he could stay by your side.
He clenched his jaw, tears filling his eyes. "I can't lose you. Not like this."
You reached out, cupping his face with your good hand. "You have to be strong. For me. For everyone."
He nodded, tears spilling over as he leaned into your touch. "I love you, so much" he choked out.
"I love you too," you whispered, your heart breaking.
He reached into his back pocket and pulled something out, clenching his fist over it. "I was waiting until a little later, but I always carried it around just in case it was the right moment," he released a wet laugh and unclenched his fist.
There, laying in the middle of his palm, was a ring. You don't know where he found it, or when he found it, but he was planning on proposing to you. Even in the state of everything, he had planned a future.
"Carl," you sobbed, pushing your palms into your eyes. This can't be real, how could the universe be this cruel?
"Y/n, I have loved you for so long, and I will keep on loving you," Carl took a shuddering breath, "I wish I asked you sooner, and I am so sorry that I couldn't save you," his knees buckled as sobs wracked his body.
You leaned over, throwing your arms around his neck, bringing his face into the crook of your neck. Tears were falling freely from your eyes now.
"No, it wasn't your fault Carl, we had no way of knowing." You shook your head, squeezing him tighter.
He nuzzled his head deeper into your neck, breathing you in. "I wish I was your husband."
You ran your hand through his hair. It was time to say goodbye. Your heat clenched painfully.
"You were my husband the moment you went out of your way to find me my favorite things," You joked, tears still streaming, "And I will always be with you. But you need to go. You need to survive." You slowly released him, leaning against the wall again. He reluctantly let you go.
He shook his head again, refusing to let go. "I can't leave you."
"You have to," you insisted, your voice firm despite the pain. "Please, Carl. For me, for your wife?"
His shoulders shaking with silent sobs, he leaned in, pressing a final, lingering kiss to your lips. "I'll never forget you, Y/n Grimes" he smiled a little at the sound of your name with his last name. His voice raw with emotion.
You smiled through your tears. "I know. Now go."
With one last, pained look, Carl stood up, his face set with grief and torment He turned and ran, leaving you behind as you watched him disappear into the fading light.
The pain in your arm intensified, but it was nothing compared to the ache in your heart. You clutched your arm, feeling the poison spreading through your veins. Each breath was a struggle, but you forced yourself to stay conscious, to hold on for just a little longer. It was strange how the virus acted this fast.
You leaned back against the wall, memories flooding your mind. The first time you and Carl had kissed, the nights spent watching the stars through broken windows, the whispered confessions of love when the world seemed to be falling apart. Each moment was a precious fragment of time, now slipping away.
As darkness began to close in, you heard the sound of footsteps approaching. Your heart skipped a beat, hoping against hope that it was Carl coming back for you. But the footsteps were heavy, deliberate. Not the hurried, desperate steps of someone you loved.
A figure appeared in the doorway, and you recognized Michonne’s silhouette. Her eyes widened in horror as she saw you slumped against the wall, the bite mark glaringly obvious.
"No…" she whispered, rushing to your side.
You managed a weak smile. "Michonne, it's okay."
"It's not okay," she said, tears glistening in her eyes. "We can’t lose you."
You shook your head slowly. "It's too late. You know that."
She nodded, her face a mask of grief. "Carl…where is he?"
"I sent him away. He needs to survive."
Michonne’s expression softened. "He’s going to be heartbroken."
You closed your eyes, tears slipping down your cheeks. You didn't want to go, but that wasn't up to you. You had your whole life ahead of you. You had Carl, and the future you were supposed to experience with him was beautiful. But the pain was becoming unbearable, and you knew you didn't have much time left.
You looked up at Michonne, your vision blurring. "Please, Michonne. End it. I don't want to become one of them."
She nodded, her jaw set with determination. She drew her katana, the blade glinting in the dim light. "I promise it’ll be quick."
You closed your eyes, taking a final, shuddering breath. "Thank you."
The last thing you felt was a gentle touch on your cheek, and then the world faded to black.
Carl ran through the streets, his mind a whirlwind of emotions. He couldn't believe this was happening. The one person who had brought light into his life, who had given him hope, was gone. He stumbled to a stop, collapsing to his knees as sobs wracked his body.
He stayed there for what felt like hours, the weight of his grief crushing him. He couldn't accept it, he wouldn't. You were both children, but he wasn't stupid, he knew that loving you wasn't a childhood love, it was one more serious, one that only some people can experience.
As he walked back towards the house where the group was camped, he saw Michonne approaching. Her face was solemn, her eyes filled with unspoken sorrow. Carl's heart clenched as he met her gaze.
"She’s gone, isn't she?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Michonne nodded, swallowing back on coming tears. "I made it quick." she whispered.
Carl's chest tightened.
They walked back to the house in silence, the weight of loss heavy on their shoulders. But as the days turned into weeks, Carl held onto your memory, using it as a source of strength. He hadn't fully accepted it, but he was going to kill every walker out there. He was going to get revenge.
And though the pain never fully faded, he knew that as long as he kept going, a part of you would always be with him.

IT'S NOT OKAY
carl grimes x fem reader
Tumblr media
WARNINGS: depressed reader, angst, mentions of character death (Glenn), mentions of sad Carl, mentions of bad parents, mentions of father figure Glenn, mentions of blood, gore, murder, mentions of revenge, mentions of reader skipping meals, helpful/understanding Carl.
she laid in the same position for days, it had almost been an entire week and she'd just been rotting there like a corpse, her mind in a frozen haze while the bat slamming down on Glenn's head seemed to replay like a constant loop in her head.
and well the fact that Negan had almost forced Rick to cut off her own boyfriend's arm, she could hear his mocking and his taunts as Glenn died and she could still hear the way Maggie screamed.
Her only true father figure had died, and it was shattering her, she was shattered because of it, when she saw the eye popping out of her skull she had gotten sick, she almost passed out from the shock and well the fact she was still injured and weak from a past fight.
she was only 15 and it was so damn hard for her to even think about such a gory thought but she had to understand that this was the real world surrounding her.
She thought about in the beginning when Glenn had saved her, he had rescued her after her parents had been to careless and left her, she was no older than Carl when it happened, and there he was bringing her back to the camp to feed and clothe her.
she had grown a family because of him, if it weren't for him she wouldn't be here today, she wouldn't be here sulking in this bed, and she sure as hell wouldn't be alive.
she could feel Carl place a small kiss on her cheek as a tear slipped down her face, she had started to cry once more, she could feel him place a seat on the bed so he could face her.
he frowned seeing her cry, he hated the sight, he hated watching as she held onto her stomach while she felt sick from the sight of his head being bashed in by that bastard.
"shh it's okay" he tried to comfort her but what was the use? would it fix the fact that they were stuck under The Saviours choke hold while two of their friends were dead and they couldn't get revenge.
she flipped around to the other side to face away from him with a soft breath she let out another sniffle letting her tears fall into the white pillow case, "talk to me please you haven't spoken in days not even a hi or a response when i speak to you" he rubbed her back feeling as her tense body seemed to loosen up for him at the touch.
he had been struggling to, he had missed Glenn so much it was like a piece of his heart was missing and well he had so much rage inside him that it was starting to pull him in so many directions.
he felt like soon he was going to be torn in half from the sadness and the anger tugging at both ends of him, he wanted revenge on all of the men, he wanted to kill Negan himself for killing such innocent people because in true reality they didn't deserve any of it.
Once carl realized she was going to stay silent he got up from the bed, reaching into a bag he pulled a fresh pair of clothes out for her along with a rubber band resting amongst his wrist.
"c'mere" he spoke softly lifting up the still bloody shirt from her body. she had been sitting right next to Glenn when it happened which meant she had his blood laced all over her white shirt, now it was dried and brown but it was still his blood.
he pulled it from her body and tossed it to the floor while he put a new one on her, he helped her to wiggle out of the bloody jeans, there were dried blood patches in the knees from her digging them into the gravel to prevent a gut wrenching scream from her.
he pulled them off and slipped on a new pair of jeans on her slightly closing his eyes to give her some privacy, she sat up on the bed with his help, he knew she hadn't eaten for almost a full week.
she stared at the wall blankly before following Carl into the kitchen, he placed a green apple in her hand and a bottle of water on the marble counter in-front of her.
she hesitantly went to take a bite from the apple but a hand covered her mouth, it was like everything she looked at seemed to make her sick, she closed her eyes before taking a bite feeling the sweetness hit over her tongue as she chewed and swallowed the bit.
he was proud of her that she was slowly eating, and once she knew it she was down to the core of the apple and the water bottle that was once full in-front of her was left empty.
she wrapped her arms around Carl as she could feel more tears bittering up inside her again, "it's okay you did good, we have to try, we both miss him i know" he admitted feeling her only cry harder at the slight implication of him.
"we'll get through this together i promise"

Taking care of Judith with Carl is absolutely MADDENING. Bro.. and Carl isn’t even the problem here it’s YOU! Carl turns around for one second and you and Jude are pointing at him and laughing.
He’ll ask what y’all are laughing about and Jude will giggle and go “you.. you look.. like like turtle!” Or some outta pocket animal and you will BURSTTTT out in tears and hollering. Carl is looking at you two confused asl.
First of all he’s very offended and second why is his s/o and lil sister ganging up on him?
You’ll apologize and he’ll try to get a little kiss from you and you’ll back away like, “Oh Jude! Do you SMELL that?? It smell like shit all of a sudden..” yes, you taught her what that word means with the help of daryl.
She will cover her nose and giggle even more as you two bully the older Grimes.
He’s now pretty sad. But dw, you give him a big ole’ kiss on his eye patch and his lips. Judith will say Ew in the background but she loves you two.

Insecurities Carl Grimes would love would be…
Tumblr media
Acne
He definitely used to struggle with skin outbreaks and understands the pain of keeping up with skin care. He’s definitely clean your face for you if you’re too tired (he loves cleaning your face) so he definitely wouldn’t mind! He loves looking and touching your facial features.
Crooked teeth
When you’re having a hard time liking your teeth he would always say “your teeth are hugging each-other, they’re best friends!” It reminded you when you brushed your teeth and you’d giggle to yourself. He also reassured you that crooked teeth are normal!
Frizzy hair
As someone who has glorious hair (y’all know I’m right I wanna touch carls hair), he loves seeing someone with different hair than his family. Anytime you guys were out on runs, he loved seeing your frizz when the sun was directly on you. He thought you looked so angelic
Stomach fat
HE LOVES YOUR TUMMY SO MUCH?? Every-time he sees it when you change, stretch, reaching for something you cannot reach, he blushes so hard it’s adorable. When he spoons you, he holds your stomach making you melt under his touch. You could fall asleep right then and there.
Moles
So y’all know that saying “your moles are where your past lover kissed you the most”? Yeah he believes that. He’ll kiss your moles no matter where they are because anytime you notice your mole(s) doing everyday tasks, he wants you to know he loves that part of you.

Note
Hi could I please request a Carl Grimes x fem!reader fic. Some angst but mainly fluff
The reader has a lot of anxiety in general but lately she’s been feeling extra anxious and stressed, more than usual, and Carl takes notice of her change in behavior. He decides to do something about it. He later shows up at her house that night and takes her to the lake as a mini surprise date because he knows it’s one of her favorite spots and that she likes being by the water. They lay next to each other staring up at the night sky stargazing and pointing out the different stars. He talks to her and she opens up about her recent anxiety about losing him fearing that she’s not good enough for him. Carl comforts the reader and gives her any reassurance she may need. Carl and the reader are dating so maybe some soft kissing and making out moments at the end with lots of cuddling.
Thank you 🌙✨
A/N: Hi! Thank you so much for the request! It’s not that long it’s more a blurb than anything else, and I also decided to write it from Carl’s point of view. I really do hope you enjoy it though!
Pairing: Carl Grimes x Fem!reader
Setting: Alexandria!
Watch out for the typos y’all.
Tumblr media
I smiled to myself as I managed to light the few amount of candles I found in Alexandria.
I made sure everything was set and positioned in a way that made it look like we were royalty. And I was on the way to serve the queen.
I noticed how (Y/N)’s been acting lately, and that’s not the version I know, so I thought a nice dinner out by the lake would be nice for us both.
Looking out at the sun, I realized the sun was setting and thought it was the perfect time to grab (Y/N).
I walked over to her house, and gently knocked on the door. “(Y/N)? Are you in there?”
No reply, but I heard a bit of shuffling. As if someone was trying to get up off a chair.
The door opens and (Y/N) looks at me with a thousand yard stare, that made a shiver go down my spine.
“Hey, I have something to show you.”
“No.” She said and proceeded to close the door in my face. I’m quick to put my foot in the crack of the door before it shut completely.
“Don’t do this. It’s important.” I said, and she opened the door wider.
With a roll of her eyes and a shrug of her shoulders, she motioned for me to go with her chin. “Fine. Show me.”
I smiled, closing the door for her, before placing a hand on her lower back and led her to the lake.
The sun had almost completely set, by that time, and everyone could see the stars shining through.
“What is this?” She asks and I just stand back and let her explore, the entire set up.
There was a table with 2 plates, and one with the dome to shield the food from being shown just yet.
Some of the candles I lit up had died down. But it was the least of my worries. I just wanted to make sure she was having a good time.
“Carl..”
“Remember when you told this was your favorite spot? I decided for us to have dinner here.” I said even though dinner was a bit of a stretch. Considering that the ‘dinner’ was a couple of granola bars and some fruit.
As she took it all in I could tell her emotions were getting the best of her, and tears started welling up in her eyes. I was quick to grab her hand softly and pull her flush into my chest.
I let her do what she needed, continuing to hold her tight and rubbed her back in a soothing manner.
Once she had calmed down, she wiped her eyes and said, “Sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry. If you ever need, someone to talk to or just listen, you know I’m here for you.” I replied and she looked like she was going to cry once more.
“I noticed how different you’ve been acting and thought you’d like to have a moment away from the world. By having this dinner with me?”
“Of course, I would love to.” I smile, and pulled her chair out for her, and once she sat down I pushed it in. Then sat in my own chair.
I removed the dome from the food to show her the ‘dinner.’ I even tried to explain why it wasn’t actual food, but she shook her head in understanding.
She reached her hand out and set it atop of mine. “Don’t worry about it. It’s perfect actually.“
We talked about events that happened today whilst eating our dinner. Then decided to lay on the grassy floor and look up at the stars.
“The stars are really pretty tonight.”
I nod, “Well, not as pretty as someone I know, but still a close second.” I replied and she playfully rolled her eyes.
“Hey, Carl?”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry, truly. For the way I’ve been acting lately. I’ve just been stressing out and it was just getting to be too much.”
“You don’t have to do tell me anything, you don’t want to. But what’s got you stressed, (Y/N)?”
She sighed and avoided eye contact before speaking, “I don’t.. It’s just…. I’m scared to lose you.”
“You’ll never lose me-.”
“You don’t know that! We can protect ourselves as long as we can, from the walkers. But from the Saviors? They’d kill any one of us in a heartbeat, without thinking twice.”
“I know. None of us know when we’re going to pass on, we just know that it’s going to happen.” I stated. “As much as that pains you, it’s out of our control. But you know what isn’t out of our control?”
“What’s that?”
“This. This right here. Our time together. The world may be ending, but they can’t take this away from us. I won’t let them.” She smiles sadly at me, and I put a hand on her cheek.
“But I can assure you, that I will be careful as I can with the walkers. I’ll even bring my dad along with me, as a second pair of eyes. Okay?” I lean forward to place a kiss to her forehead.
Once I pulled away I looked into her eyes, as corny as it sounds, her eyes really did sparkle in the moonlight.
“I love you, Carl Grimes.”
“I love you too, (Y/N) (L/N).” I smiled, leaning in once more, but this time kissing her lips softly. I placed a hand on her waist and hers around my neck.
I deepened the kiss, really wanting to show her that I truly wanted to spend every waking moment with her. And she did the same, before we both had to pull away from each other.
We smiled, taking in deep breaths. We didn’t have to exchange any words to know that we loved being in each other’s presence. I pulled her close and she rested her head on my chest.
Before I knew it she was sleeping on me, with a smile on her face.

Herschel still looks like he's sleeping peacefully after a long day's work on the farm, with one of his arms flopped over the side of the bed, handcuffed to the frame. His fingers, curled loosely around nothing, refuse to twitch no matter how long I stare at them.
Maybe that's why it's so hard for me to imagine him as one of the walkers.
It's easy to forget that they used to be people.
"You best wake up soon," I tell the motionless old man, trying my best to sound like I mean business. It ain't lost on me that my Dad was in this same position last year, laid up in bed after he took that bullet to the guts and refused to die. It was Herschel that had saved him, only outta the kindness of his heart and nothing much else at all, 'cause he ain't got a bad bone in him, not even one. "We need you."
Crouched at his bedside, Maggie squeezes her eyes shut, a tear slipping down her cheek as she holds his hand.
When she opens them again, they're green and watery like fresh grass after a sun shower.
Even though Carl and I got an earful from our Dads about sneaking off, I'm glad we managed to get the supplies from the infirmary.
His leg — Or should I call it something else, now that half of it is gone? Is there a word for such an impossible thing? — is wrapped up in clean, white bandages, no longer pourin' blood. I know any one of us would happily give him one of ours, but we just can't.
"Thank you," Carol glances from me, to Carl, to Glenn. "By the way. I couldn't have done this without your help."
Glenn smiles a bit. "Should I say it was no problem?"
"Probably not," She chuckles softly, going back to tidying up the thin gauze around the wound.
Herschel was always so kind to me, even when I wasn't kind in return. There are just some people who are like that — Good. Like Dale — and can't ever be anything else. I used to think it was a weakness, because what good is an animal that doesn't know how to bite? How's it meant to survive? Nobody I ever knew was brave enough to be gentle, but Herschel was. He took us in when we needed help, fed us warm tea and potato soup when all we had to give in return was trouble. He cleaned the blood from my wounds, gave me a clean bed to sleep in.
No matter if somebody is as mean as a snake or as loyal as a dog — In my case, if they're both — we all bleed the same.
"Harley?"
Everybody turns at the sound of Beth's voice, the blonde girl peering around the doorframe.
"Yeah?"
"Could you come help me with somethin' real quick?" She asks, adding, "It won't take long."
"That reminds me, actually." Carol tells Glenn, "I need your help with something, too."
"I don't think I can leave Herschel again," He says.
"Let's talk about it outside."
"Um. Sure thing," I nod to Beth, standing from the metal seat and following her outta the cell, and into ours. "What is it?"
She kneels down on Carl's mattress where Mouse is napping, picking up a bundle of brown cloth and laying it across her lap. "He's gonna have a hard time walkin' around with one side of his pants draggin' on the ground. He could, you know, trip or somethin'."
She takes a tiny sewing needle and sticks it through the fabric.
Trip?
Her Daddy's on his deathbed and she's worried about him tripping?
"I just need you to keep the string from knottin' up," She explains as I sit in front of her. "So I can focus on the sewin' part."
Taking the string and picking the tangled pieces apart as she continues weaving the needle in and out, her thin fingers trembling, I decide to humour her, because it's the right thing to do. Some people cry when they're nervous, but I guess others sew up pantlegs.
"I asked Maggie to help me earlier," She muses, frustrated. "But she wouldn't do it."
I almost lose my grip on the string as she tugs harshly on it, catching it at the last moment.
"Oops."
"Apparently, she didn't want me to get my hopes up too high," She says. "You believe that? It's like s-she thinks he's gonna die."
I struggle to know whether or not I should tell her that's exactly what Maggie thinks, and that nobody can blame her for it. I thought my Dad was gonna die when we were on the farm, but it was never because I didn't have faith in him. I was just scared.
Feeling my stare on her, Beth looks up at me through her furrowed brows, pouting, "What?"
I shake my head. "Nothin'."
"Just say it, then." She slumps. "You think the same thing, don't you?"
Gesturing to her with the ball of string, I try to convince her, "Well, I'm helpin' ya, ain't I?"
She sighs as she looks back down at her needle. "Yeah, but I know you're just feelin' sorry for me. I felt sorry for you when your Dad was unconscious. You were like a sad little puppy dog waitin' for her owner at the door, but I couldn't do anything to help."
"I'on think he's gonna die," I insist, because it's true. "I think he's either gonna die or wake up, and that's totally different."
She pulls the needle through with a long, sweeping motion. "Sorry. I'm just... I appreciate you gettin' the medical supplies."
"O'course."
I ain't gonna lie and tell her I didn't second guess going with Carl, but what matters is that I only ever had Herschel in mind.
If you were to ask my Dad, though, he'd say that's exactly what the problem was.
She adds, "Just... Promise to be more careful, next time?"
"Who bribed ya to say that?"
"Nobody," She giggles, biting the string with her teeth and tying it off. "Nobody needs to be bribed to care about you, Harley."
"What'd they give ya?"
"Nothin'!"
"If it was cookies, I want one."
"Oh, shut it." She smooths out the pantleg before holding it up to look at. "There. These will do. Decent, right?"
I smile, "Yeah, you're really good at that."
"Thanks." Folding them neatly and grabbing the next pair of pants, she says, "My Mom taught me all about textiles when I w—"
"Oh, my God!"
Mouse's head whips up.
"Maggie?" I call out worriedly, throwing the string aside and running outta the cell. "What's wrong?"
She's backed up against the wall when I come to a stop outside Herschel's cell, staring wide-eyed at him, shuddering somethin' about, He ain't breathin', He stopped breathin', as Lori pushes past everyone and presses her ear to his chest.
"'Stopped breathin'?'" I exclaim but I don't know who to, horrified it means, dead.
"Oh, Lord," Beth croaks.
Lori lifts her head and without wasting any time, she starts pumping his chest, grunting with each brutal squashing of his sternum. I watch on, unsure what I can do, unsure if I'm gonna stop breathin', too. His heart's stopped, and I know that means dead.
Lori's hair hangs down, tickling the end of his nose like a feather.
"Come on," She's gritting through her teeth, "Come on."
I swear his nostrils twitch.
I'on even have to think about it. I pull my gun out, point it at his head, watching for any sign that he's waking up in the wrong way. It ain't like all the other heads I've had hovering on my sights. It ain't mishappen, rotted, peeled back, leaking. It's just our Herschel.
The handcuffs rattle.
I gasp.
All the little hairs on my arms stand up.
Lori squeals as his body lurches up like he's being sick and his arms reach out for her, Maggie pulling her into her side.
They hold each other, gawking at him.
Has he turned? Is he gone?
I'm about to move my finger onto the trigger when he lets out a thin sigh, slumps back down on his pillow, and starts to snore like a happy baby, none the wiser to any of the horror he just caused us. Well. I'm glad somebody's havin' a good time.
Lowering the gun, I look at poor Maggie, Beth, and Lori, suddenly quite ashamed that I had drawn.
When I look to my left, Carl's shakily lowering his gun, too.
"It's okay," Maggie soothes us after a breathless moment has passed. "It's— It's okay."
"I'm sorry," I say. Even if he had turned into a walker and I was forced to shoot him, it still would'a had her Dad's face on it.
"Don't be, honey. It's okay." She says. "He's okay."
Beth suddenly breaks free of them and marches outta the cell.
Not wanting her to be alone after what just happened, I holster my gun and follow after her, Mouse at my heel. I don't care that I'll probably be stuck with her for hours. Some people sew up pantlegs when they're nervous, but I guess others help them hold the string.
Beth and I have finished tailoring and folding away all of Herschel's pants by the time Rick, Dad, and T-Dog return to the cellblock, approaching Carl, who's standing in the doorway of Herschel's cell, telling them, "Herschel stopped breathing before. Mom saved him."
"It's true," Glenn nods as they crowd into the cell with us, Rick coming to his bedside, sadly gazing down at him.
"I almost shot him, Dad," I whisper, thinking of the night he was forced to raise his gun to Dale's head. "Thought he turned."
His expression solemn, he reaches down and wraps a hand around the nape of my neck, squeezing reassuringly.
"S'alright," He rasps quietly, leaving the rest unsaid.
I let the pressure calm me as I watch Herschel's sleeping face, his wrinkled mouth parting as if to speak a silent word.
Wait.
His mouth is parting.
Realizing the same thing, Maggie rushes to his side.
"Daddy?" She softly calls out to him, searching his closed eyes for something. "Daddy, we're here."
"We're here," Beth agrees.
Please, I think to myself, This has to be it, right?
I feel Dad move his hand onto my shoulder, stopping me from reaching for my holster. He rests his fingers on the grip of his gun. Rick gently puts his hand on Maggie's back, glancing back at him with a tense sort of look before focusing on Herschel again.
Then, without any grand affairs or a single word from anybody in the room, his eyelids slowly flutter open, and they're not milky, or bloodshot, or twitching, or anything. They're just a tender blue, focusing and unfocusing on the bottom of the bunk above him.
The first thing he turns his head to look at is Maggie's tearful, laughing face. Beth lets out a squeaky cry, and the corner of his mouth pulls into a weak smile as his hand twitches in the handcuffs, tryna reach out for them in the human way, gentle and loving.
He's okay. He really is.
Dad relaxes, removing his hand from his gun.
Taking the keys from his belt, Rick unlocks the handcuffs and they fall away, letting Herschel embrace Maggie's wet cheek.
"Hey, sleepyhead," Beth sniffles.
"You scared us," Maggie adds, putting her hand over his.
He looks over her shoulder at Rick, at me and Dad, at Carol and T-Dog, at Lori, Glenn, and Carl, and lastly, at smiling Mouse.
"I hope my bed hair isn't going to s-scare you all over again," He says hoarsely, making us all chuckle. "How long?"
"About half a day," She says. "We dressed your leg up real good. Got the bleedin' to stop. You're gonna be okay, Daddy."
"Of course I am," He smiles.
"Let me get you some water," Carol says as she turns outta the cell, leaving everyone to bask in the moment, sharing relieved glances.
We got no choice but to believe him when he sounds as certain as he does. He's a tough one, alright. Tougher than all of us combined.
When she returns, Maggie shuffles outta the way to give her room to crouch down, helping him take a long sip.
"Easy," She cautions, pulling away. "We want you rested up."
"Yes, I think that's a good idea," He agrees, peering down his belly at his half-leg, giving it a bit of a wiggle.
"Does it hurt?"
"Oh," He chuckles. "Only my pride, my dear. You did an excellent job."
"Well, I had an excellent teacher," She says proudly, brushing some of the hair back from his face.
"And, Rick," He reaches out for the man, who takes his bony hand in his strong ones. "I think I owe you just about everything."
He shakes his head. "No more than I owe you."
"I haven't quite taken an axe to your leg, yet, son," He jokes, releasing his hand to point at him, "S-so, not exactly."
Dipping his head, he laughs, "Fair enough, old man."
Taking Maggie's hand again, Herschel's eyes begin to droop sleepily before he falls back asleep, a faintly happy look on his face, like he's having a nice dream. Maggie kisses Beth's cheek and holds her Daddy's hand under her chin, placing another kiss there.
"Let's leave him to rest," Carol says, gently guiding everyone out. "He needs it if he's going to be up and walking."
Stepping into the cell hall, Rick sighs heavily, "That was a relief."
"He's a tough son of a bitch," Glenn agrees.
Rubbing her belly, Lori asks, "What happened with the prisoners?"
"We tried to take cell block C with them," He explains, his brow splattered with wet blood and gunk, but with no wound. "I mean, these are guys who thought we might have a phone for 'em to use, so you can imagine how it went. The rest, I'on think the kids should hear."
"So, where are they now?" Carol asks.
"Two of 'em are in cell block C," He says, leaving me to wonder where the other three are. "It's a mess, but they agreed to stay."
I ain't sure how I feel about havin' neighbours in here. The prison is definitely more than big enough to share with them, but some neighbours are just better off dead, even if they give us dry corn and canned beef. It's not what Dale would've said, I know, and I think that's the reason Rick let them live. For now, at least. It's not as if they've threatened us, unlike that group of bandits he murdered last year.
Yes, the prisoners' leader did have his gun aimed at Rick's head, but Rick had one aimed at his, too.
"Hopefully they stay out of our way," She shrugs, though she doesn't look very happy. "Nothing else we can do."
"Don't worry. We're keepin' an eye on 'em," T-Dog reassures her.
"Well, I'm gonna go clean myself up," Rick announces, his exhaustion suddenly obvious. "I need a good sleep."
"Ditto," Dad groans.
That night, I think we all rest more than a little easier knowing that Herschel will survive.
My knife sinks into the soft meat of the walker's knee, the bone popping open as I twist the blade like a key.
It gives out a gurgling cry, gripping the fence with its blackened fingers as it falls to its knees, tonguing at the wire.
SQUELCH.
Stabbing it through the eye, the rotting lady's jaw goes slack, right before she slumps over and another walker replaces her.
"Nicely done." Dad says. He's making good on his promise to let us help clear the courtyard. "How many's that now, girl?"
"Eight," I pant.
He's standing a few feet down the fence from me, holding his hand over his brow and sneering against the glare of the sun. Behind him, Carl deftly drives his knife into the knee of a walker and then its head, pulling it out with a spray of blood.
In the background, Mouse is busy doing his own thing, sniffing weeds.
"Good. Make it ten." Dad approaches me and takes my knife from me, wiping it on his thigh. "And remember to keep this clean."
With the newly gunk-free blade, he swiftly kills the walker in front of me.
It drops to the ground.
"Like I said, it don't gotta be sparklin', but you don't want all that sticky shit dryin' on there and makin' it harder for you to pull out," He explains, handing it back to me. He watches me stab the knee of the next walker, breaking the bone. "That's it. Now the head."
Its face presses up against the fence, eye level with me, only managing half a growl before I stick the blade through its eye.
It's all the more satisfying when I imagine it's the walker that tackled me on the farm, or the one from the hospital, or the one from yesterday. It sure feels good being able to kill a thing that wants to kill me. With each kill, I'm gettin' better, faster, more accurate.
"And you, boy?" He calls over to Carl. "How many?"
As the walker in front of him collapses, the boy grins. "Ten. Guess I've mastered the class, huh, Daryl?"
"Ten?" I sass. "You lyin'."
"Make it twelve," Dad orders, wiping the smug look from his face. "Remember yer footin'. S'why you're stumblin' all over the place."
I can't help but snicker.
Dad unlocks the small gate as I cripple and take out one more walker, bringing me to ten kills, one for every one of my fingers.
Dad pulls his bandana over his head. One of the many walkers shuffles toward him, but before it can do any damage, he effortlessly lunges forward with the fabric and braces it between its teeth, dragging it into the courtyard and tying a knot behind its head.
As Mouse starts barking at it, I soothe, "Shh, boy. It's okay."
Dad kicks the gate closed, and with the walker angrily chewing on the bandana, he muscles it over to us.
"We're gonna practice without the fence."
I remember we did this a few months ago on the side of the highway when we were first learning how to properly kill walkers.
Until then, we only knew the basics — Aim for the head!
Now, he makes us practice every few days.
It's one of my favorite pastimes. Even better'un playin' soccer and ridin' our bikes!
"Y'all know the drill. It can't bite ya." He reassures us, the walker's thrashing no match for the strong grip he's got on it. "I'm gonna let it go and you're gonna take it down however you feel is best. But you wanna keep on its eight and four. Why ya gonna do that?"
"That's its blind spots," I recite. "And ya don't wanna get behind it, 'cause it might fall on ya."
"Easier to dodge," He agrees. "Harley, you're gonna go first. Carl, you get seconds. Hold the dog. Ready?"
Carl crouches, holding Mouse still. "Yep."
"Ready," I nod.
"I'm right here if things get messy." Dad shoves it forward. "Alright. Meathead, in the ring. Show 'im who's boss, girl."
The walker locks eyes with me.
Without anything to hold it back, it starts to clumsily stride toward me with purpose.
"You got this, Harley," Carl cheers, Mouse whining worriedly.
"I'mma kill it, Mousey," I reassure him. "It's okay."
Let's do it. Eight and four, eight and four. As soon as it's within arm's reach, I dodge it, ducking under its arm. Confused, it looks around, sniffing at the air to find out where I went because it's a fuckin' idiot. Rearing my knife back, I drive it into the back of its knee.
It stumbles drunkenly, landing on its stomach, but with my hands still wrapped around the knife, I fall with it.
Landing against its thigh, I grunt.
Mouse's whining gets louder.
"I'm here. Stay calm," Dad coaches me as Carl shushes the dog. "Get that knife out 'fore it gets back up."
Righting myself, I pull the blade out and crawl up to its head, stabbing the nape of its head.
Pink brains and blood leaks out.
It's dead!
As I stand back up, heart racing, Dad comes forward and starts untying his bandana from the walker's mouth.
"Good work," He says, shaking it out. "You know why you fell, right?"
"I ain't took the knife out quick enough. Pulled me down with it."
If I was up against any more walkers, they would'a piled on top of me while I's on the ground. Eaten alive, in Rick's words. Eugh.
Not a good pastime.
"Was only practice," He soothes, kissing my hair. "Next time, give it a bit of a wiggle and it'll free up quicker."
"Alright."
"You didn't warn us about us falling on them, Daryl," Carl jokes, releasing Mouse, who runs straight for me.
"Shut up, Carl," I smile, petting the dog's big snout. "It was only practice."
"Woohoo, Harley!"
We all look up at Glenn standing out in the field with Rick, grinning and holding a bunch of firewood.
"Good job!" Rick adds, waving.
Dad scoffs. "Didn't know we had an audience."
I cup my hands around my mouth. "Thanks!"
After that, Dad dresses up another walker for Carl to practice on. While he don't fall over like I did, he keeps nervously dancing around it like some sorta twinkle-toes ballerina, until my Dad's patience wears thin and he shouts at him to make a move, and he finally kills it.
SQUELCH.
"Alright," Dad says, "Back to work."
Fifteen, I count in my head, pulling my knife free, when the door behind us suddenly swings open.
What was that?
At first, I think it's more walkers spilling into the courtyard, but when I turn around, I see it's not walkers at all.
It's the prisoners.
The white guy with the ugly moustache and the black guy that wanted a phone to call his family.
That's them, emerging from the dark.
"Oh. H-Hey, guys," The shorter of the two greets us breathily, holding up his hands as the door shuts behind them. "Fancy se—"
"Back the Hell up!"
Dad's got his crossbow aimed at their heads before they can take a single step toward us, his finger curled around the trigger.
Mouse starts bark, bark, barking at them, but I lunge toward him, holding him back.
"Holy shit," The prisoner exclaims, looking like he's about to wet his jumpsuit, or cry, or both. "Man, w-we don't want no trouble."
If he ain't careful, he's gonna get an arrow to the head and a dog bite to the neck.
"What do you want?" Dad growls, blocking their view of me and Carl with his body. "Cell block weren't cozy enough for ya?"
"Please, mister. We know we had a deal," He begs. I ain't never heard nobody call my Dad, mister, before. He must really wanna get on our good side, but what he don't understand is that when it comes to strangers, we don't got no good side. "But you gotta understand! We can’t live in that place another minute, you follow me? All the bodies. People we knew. Blood. Brains everywhere. There’s ghosts!
Rick, Glenn, and T-Dog must have noticed all the commotion, rushing into the courtyard.
Frowning hard, Rick demands to know, "What's goin' on? Why're they out here?"
Lowering his crossbow, Dad sneers, "Fellers got cold feet, is what I'm hearin'."
"We just can't live like that," The taller one says. "We can't."
"Why don't'cha move the bodies out?"
As Glenn herds me and Carl behind him, T-Dog scoffs, "You ain't done that, yet? You should be burnin' them."
"We tried," The blonde blubbers.
"The fence is down on the far side of the prison." The other explains, making everybody share tense glances with each other. A downed fence ain't good at all, if we wanna fortify this place. "Every time we drag a body out, those things just pile up."
Well, that's what they're best at. Piling up. That, and bitin' into people like they's burgers.
It's a bible-level miracle these two ain't dead, yet.
"Look," The weaselly little man says, becoming even more antsy at our prolonged silence. "We had nothing to do with Tomas and Andrew. You tryna prove a point? Yeah? W— You proved it, bro! I swear, we’ll do whatever it takes to be part of your group!"
When he gestures to me and Mouse, Dad's hands twitch around his crossbow.
"You—? You got a dog? I mean, that's awesome," He puffs. "Clearly, you been doin' well for yourselves. What's his name?"
"Don't'chu fuckin' talk to my daughter, man," Dad scolds him.
"It's just, I love— We love dogs. I actually used to have a labrado—"
"Man, will you stop?" His friend tuts. "Have some balls."
Mouse gives a little huff.
He don't like 'em, neither.
"I'm just sayin'," He sighs, "I really, really, really don't wanna go back to that cell block again. Please don't make us."
"Our deal is non-negotiable," Rick replies coldly. "You either live in your cell block, or you leave. We have kids here."
"We ain't pedos, mister. Swear!"
"Jesus Christ," Glenn mutters under his breath, because this guy is embarrassing.
"We ain't here to test that theory out," Dad scowls.
Rick agrees, "You even think about steppin' into our cell block, and you can consider yourselves dead."
"You know, I told you this was a waste of time," The tall one scoffs, smart enough to ditch the begging route. "These guys ain’t no different than the pricks who shot up our boys. You know how many friends’ corpses we had to drag out this week? Just threw ‘em out-like. Those were good guys! Good guys who had our backs against the really bad dudes in this joint, like Tomas and Andrew!"
None of these guys were put in here for no reason.
Everybody used to say that only bad guys went to prison, but I never believed that. I saw the people I cared about be rounded into cop cars and driven away into the night more time than I cared to count, always watching the flashing lights disappear down the road while standing on the porch with Merle, shivering in the wind in my pyjamas. No, I knew it was only people the police ain't liked that went to prison.
Whether it was because they was murderers, or brawlers, or tax-dodgers; or if they had only given 'em a sour look.
My Dad, he was all'a those things, but it weren't no sour look that got him put in handcuffs in the end.
He ain't like Herschel and Dale. Ain't all good. He's nasty and he swears and he's killed people, but that's only part of him.
I feel a little bad for these two.
They're clueless, like babies. They don't even got a word for the walkers, yet. But I know that even though our group love my Dad for who he is, and they know he's been to prison, and that it don't make him all bad, they won't feel the same way for these two strangers.
The most important thing we have is each other.
I've seen first-hand what we do to anybody that threatens that.
"Now, we’ve all made mistakes to get in here, chief," The man continues uselessly. "And I’m not gonna pretend to be a saint, but believe me — We paid our due. Enough that we would rather hit the road, than to go back into that shithole for one more second."
He doesn't know he's just described to a T what's about to happen.
Rick levels them with an indifferent look. "Then you're on the road."
His face falls.
And it's probably not because he won't get to pet Mouse.
"We'll die out there."
Again, Rick shrugs.
Raising his crossbow once more, Dad herds them outta the courtyard and into the field.
Author's note.
I enjoyed writing this chapter! Probably because nothing bad happened. We have low standards here at Harley D. Dixon.
As always, I sincerely hope you enjoyed reading! 💙

Practice makes perfect
Request: please could you write one where Rick helps inexperienced reader shoot a gun and he also teaches her how to defend herself? Thank you!
A/N: hope this is okay!! Would you all like to see a daryl version of this??
Rick grimes x fem! Reader
You were new to the prison environment, you had stumbled upon the prison when you had lost your people to the dead. It was terrifying but thankfully Rick grimes and his people welcomed you in with open arms— or… well. Held at gunpoint. But that’s beside the point. You had been here for almost 18 days now and you were fitting in just right. You had found comfort within Hershel the kind man who seemed to be incredibly loyal and genuine. Not to mention his kindness towards everything was gratefully accepted during times like these. Beth too was a sweet girl but there were a few of the group who seemed a bit rough around the edges. Not that you minded of course, you were just glad you could say you had some kind of “friends.”
Here you were positioned near the gate where walkers were pressing themselves against, ruthlessly clawing at the metal structure desperate for the taste of flesh. You stood silently staring and listening to their groans and moans your hand numbly gripping onto the pistol that dangled by your side. It might’ve seemed stupid but you had never shot a gun in your life. And now that you were in this situation you wished you had accepted the many times family members offered to take you to the shooting range when the world was still normal. You exhaled shaking your head before you pointed your gun at one of the walkers heads, squinting your eyes slightly your finger resting upon the trigger as you tried to figure out how to do it, footsteps slowing just behind you— ricks scrutinising eyes examined you thoroughly before he cleared his throat. “The safety’s one” his thick accent touched your ears and you quickly glanced at him “what?” You murmured nervously “the safety’s on. That’s why you can’t pull the trigger.” He vaguely explained taking steps towards you before stopping beside you, slender fingers grasping onto the metal of the gun as he stood side by side with you his arm brushing lightly against yours “look,” he tilted the gun your way his thumb brushing against the metal before a click was heard “safety’s off now.” He spoke before slowly handing it back to you. “Try now.”
He took a step back giving you room to try but now under this much pressure you felt your nerves kick in. You were worried that because you didn’t know how to shoot a gun without looking like an idiot you’d be seen as someone lesser and be kicked out the group. But really that was just your over thinking. You hesitantly pointed the gun towards a specific walker Rick remaining silent as he observed you fingertips lightly brushing against the handle of his own gun it was just engraved into his mind to constantly do just in case he had to pull it on anyone or anything at any point. You couldn’t ever be too careful… you glanced back at him momentarily he was hard to read, you then looked forward again steadying your breath as you attempted it. And with one last deep breath you pulled the trigger the bullet flying through the air and zipping straight past the walkers a silent cuss leaving your lips as you shook your head embarrassed. “Not bad.” Rick spoke calmly, as if noting your anxious state and how you seemed to be slightly apprehensive about shooting the gun. He took a step towards you stopping beside you “have you ever shot a gun before?” He questioned and you glanced at him before shaking your head “no. I didn’t like using guns when the world was normal…” you murmur nervously and he only nods. “That’s understandable” he soon comments “I was a sheriff in Atlanta before all of this.” Rick began talking, your eyes snapping back towards him as you listened to him silently admiring him his jaw slightly clenching every now and then his baby blue eyes holding many memories within them. His eyes moved to look at you “so I was all involved in guns and protecting myself and my people.” He spoke as if trying to make you more comfortable. Opening up little by little…
“My wife…. She hated the thought of our son using guns. She refused to let him near them. Even when I offered to train him up for if anything ever happened she wouldn’t let him… even when the world went to shit… she wouldn’t let him touch a gun…” he analysed you as he spoke “until I convinced her enough… I wish I had held back slightly..” he swallowed thickly glancing down at the ground as he remembered the thought of Carl shooting his own mum. If Rick hadn’t of taught him how to shoot a gun then would Carl of shot Lori? It was a question left for speculation. No one truly knew. But Rick did feel guilt when he thought on it really hard… that’s why he tried to push it all down. Keeping it all at the back of his brain. “So I get where you’re coming from. But knowing how to shoot a gun now is… something we all need.” He spoke simply turning his back to you momentarily before he pulled his own gun out the sun reflecting off of the metal slightly making it glint every now and then “just copy my stance alright.” He spoke and you nodded watching as he put one foot forwards the other foot remaining in place almost as if he was bracing himself before he held the gun with two hands— one on the handle and trigger the other cupping it slightly as if to keep it stable. “Holding with both hands isn’t absolutely necessary but holding it with both hands keeps your focus and hands from shaking.” Rick explained and you nodded watching as he shot the gun the bullet immediately piercing the skull of the dead as it collapsed onto the ground. “Your turn.”
He spoke before backing away, and you exhaled shakily breathing in sharply as you attempted to copy his exact positioning slowly raising your gun until it was eye level with you both your hands steadying the gun “like this?” You murmured nervously Rick moving to your side his hands grabbing onto your elbow slightly “tilt” he suggested calmly making you tilt your arm ever so slightly before he moved behind you resting your hands on your shoulders knowing the force of the gun was far too powerful sometimes. He kept his hands on your shoulders “focus…” he advised gently and you nodded focusing as hard as you could. You inhaled sharply lining up the gun more straight before pulling the trigger the bullet piercing through a walkers shoulder “good. You’re getting there.” Rick praised before he reached forwards grabbing onto your hands as he positioned your hands more correctly “just remember they’re dead. Okay?” He spoke almost as if reading your mind. Knowing that you were struggling with the fact that these were once human beings. Just like you and him. “But they…” you swallowed thickly not knowing how to describe it, Rick maintaining eye contact with you “look at it this way y/n…. They don’t feel anything. They only have one job and one job only. Successfully get the food they’re constantly searching for. It’s a cycle… a painful cycle. If you shoot them you’re putting them out of their misery right?” He was right and eventually you nodded. You still needed to detach the people from the actual walkers and whom they once were but that would be a learning curve. “Alright shoot.” He spoke and you took a deep breath before squinting your eyes and once steadying your hands you shot the gun the smell of gunpowder growing stronger but you didn’t mind. You watched as the bullet pierced into the dead’s skull as it collapsed to the ground,
“Good. Again.” He spoke. The sun was starting to set and Rick knew it wouldn’t be long before more walkers started arriving. You then lined up the gun again before shooting the bullet again successfully hitting the Walker square in the head. You continued doing this over and over again until the clouds had turned a deep orangey colour rain specs starting to fall upon you and him “you did great.” Rick spoke with a faint smile “you’re going to be a pro at this soon enough. Gonna put us to shame.” He murmured nudging you playfully and you couldn’t help but smile slightly “thank you… could we do this again tomorrow?” Rick nodded slightly “sure. I’ll get you up at 7 am sharp.” He spoke and you nodded smiling as you began walking back towards the main area of the prison with him. “After all practice makes perfect.” He chuckled out lightly you could tell that helping you practice had alleviated something off of his shoulders and mind… and the same was said for you.
You walked inside with him some people eating some food and others already sleeping “I’m going to go to my cell.” You murmured and Rick nodded “goodnight. Sleep well. If you need anything just shout.” He spoke and you nodded watching as he began walking away. “Rick..” you spoke, making him stop as he turned to look at you Judith being handed to him as he held onto her securely his free hand skilfully putting his gun back onto safety “thank you. Seriously. Uh… you saved a girls life.” You spoke, Rick looking slightly confused but appreciative. “I lost my people. To the walkers…. I was close to just waiting for another herd to come take me down… you and your people gave me a reason to live.” The look on ricks face was difficult to read but he looked grateful, happy and somewhat relieved all at once. “Glad you’re still with us, y/n.” He gave you a nod lips curling up into a small smile. “Go get some rest. I’ll see you in the morning.” He gave you another curt nod before turning around tending to his daughter and you silently watched him before retreating back to your bunk a small sad smile forming on your lips— grateful for him and his people who had given you a reason to survive. You got into your bunk laying down as you began getting comfortable until you heard a slight creek before the familiar teenage boy was hanging over the top bunk “hey y/n” Carl spoke cowboy hat barely staying on and you smiled tiredly at him “hey.” He then disappeared momentarily before coming back continuing to dangle off the bed “don’t fall…” you warned with a tired smile and he only smiled holding out a red packeted chocolate bar for you to take. “Just in case you were hungry.” He spoke not letting up until you had taken it from him before he laid back down on the top bunk “thanks carl.” You spoke hearing the sound of pages turning and you smiled knowing he was reading his comic… what a thoughtful boy… a thoughtful group whom you didn’t deserve in the slightest. But you knew they’d continue over and over again giving you a reason to live.

Okay, okay, okay. This came to me in a dream, and I think you'd perfectly write this: Prison era. Carl just lost Lori. Y/n comforts Carl with a doll they've carried the whole time and have been known to never let it go but they give it to Carl. <3 please, I am begging on my hands and knees.

walkers had broke into the prison. you were separated from everyone, carl, lori, rick, everyone. you were terrified. sure, you knew how to fight, but you never liked to fight. you always thought too much about it. how the knives felt jabbing through the skulls of walkers who were once humans, how every time you killed another you felt more and more deranged...
but you knew you needed to do it. you didn't want to die, so you had to. the only thing there to comfort you was your doll, clementine. you had her ever since you were born, and you carried her everywhere with you. you were lucky enough to still have her given the current circumstances of the world. you made sure that alongside your knife, you held her tightly in your hand. you backed yourself up into a cell and slammed it shut so the walkers chasing steadily behind you couldn't get in.
you began hyperventilating, looking at the walkers hands grabbing at you from the other side. your eyes began filling up with tears as you squeezed clementine closer to you, leaning your back up against the back wall. you didn't want to die like this, but you stupidly trapped yourself here. you didn't know if those bars could hold that amount of walkers, but you went in there anyways.
tears began flowing out of your eyes as you loudly sobbed, practically screaming to get someone, anyone's, attention. ...and it worked.
"y/n?! oh, shit-" a familiar voice yelled through the prison block, followed by gunshots.
"...glenn?" you sniffled, your eyes widening as you looked around at the sudden openings through the cell bars from the walkers averting their bodies towards the shots.
you quickly bolted up with your knife again to stab the walkers that were still in arms reach in an attempt to help glenn. eventually, he got the rest.
he ran up to the cell and opened it, noticing your bloodied appearance. "are you okay? are you bit?"
"i'm fine, wh..where's carl?" you stuttered, out of breath.
"..i'm not sure. come on." he placed his hand on your shoulder and began walking you out and into the courtyard.
...
as the two of you stepped into the yard, you both noticed carl and maggie walking out, blood on both of their hands. and a baby in maggies.
tears were rolling down both of their faces, except carl had little to no emotion on his.
"carl..?" you called out, stepping closer to him. and all you got in return was a saddened look. "where.. where's lori?"
this caught ricks attention more as he began putting the pieces together. the blood, the baby.. the tears.
your face quickly softened at the realization. you brought a hand up to your face, unsure what to do besides sob.
lori was like a mother figure for you, always helping you while your parents were out working. she's the reason you were still living in the first place.
everyone was crying. glenn was holding maggie, rick was a wreck, no one knew what to do. then rick left. running back to where maggie and carl walked away to find lori.
carl wiped the tears off of his face, which resulted in blood from his hand spreading onto his cheeks. he started walking back to the cell blocks, which caused you to snap back to reality. you put a hand on his shoulder in an attempt to stop him, but he shrugged it off. you stayed standing there, looking at your hand he pushed away then back up at him. you frowned, but you understood. you were like this when you processed you'd never see your mom or dad again.
...
weeks passed. things were fixed.. sort of. carl was still a wreck. he hated talking to anyone. he barely took care of himself. he'd sit in his room, reading, sleeping, or just.. breathing.
he wouldn't talk to you, and as much as you knew it wasn't personal, it still hurt. he should know that out of everyone here, you understood.
but today, you had enough. you weren't going to let him suffer in silence any further.
you walked up to his cell and knocked on the side of the wall to get his attention, which caused him to flinch and look up at you.
"..go away." he murmured.
"carl, i don't want you to go through this by yourself. i want to help." you crossed your arms and leaned against the doorframe, your doll hanging over your pocket.
"i don't need you to help me. i'm not going through anything, i'm fine." he snapped back angrily.
"you're not fine. people who are fine don't sit in their room all day staring blankly at the ceiling." you retort before softening your tone. "..i'm here for you."
this broke him slightly. he sighs and covers his face with his hands before falling back on his bed.
you walk up and sit next to him silently, giving him some time before you speak again. "i know how it feels. well, kind of.. i just want to help you."
"what happened to you that day?" he changes the subject, his hands still covering his face.
"..what?"
"what happened to you when the walkers broke into the prison?" he repeats.
"why are you asking me that?" you raise an eyebrow at him.
"just answer me." his tone turns slightly more demanding. "you were covered in blood."
"oh." you sighed. "a ton of the walkers were chasing me. i killed a couple and their blood splattered on me. i had to run into a cell and lock myself in."
"so you almost got bit?" his voice turned more upset and concerned.
"well, yeah. but i didn't."
he shakes his head and sits back up to look at you. "i should've been there to help you. and even when i saw you covered in blood, i didn't care to ask if you were bit."
"that's okay. i don't mind. you... lost your mom. you weren't thinking straight. i didn't take any offense to it." you reassure him with a smile, which he simply just looks away at.
"i don't understand. why would you want to help me after that?" he asks, his voice slightly cracking.
"because.. i love you?" you chuckle, and he quickly turns his head back to face you again.
"...what?"
"when i realized i was never going to see my parents again, i reacted the same way you did. and you were still there for me. i yelled at you, i pushed you away, you didn't care. you were there for me." you smile, looking down at your hands in your lap. "i love you, carl."
he stares at you, mouth agape, dumbfounded by your words. "like.. how?"
you laughed. "in every way possible." a flush of pink covered both of your faces. as carl processed your words, you took your doll out of your pocket and handed it to him. "here."
"huh?" he grabs clementine and looks at her confused. "...your doll?"
you nod with a bright smile. "mhm. she's gotten me through rough times. maybe.. she can help you, too."
his confused look turns more sweet as he chuckles, holding the doll close. ".. thank you."
"of course." you pull him in for a hug, squeezing him tightly, to which he returns.
"...i love you, too, by the way." he mumbles into your neck.
you chuckle in response, kissing the top of his head. he breaks from the hug and looks at you, his eyes wide.
"did you just kiss me?" his eyebrows raise.
"maybe." you reply in a sing-song tone, a smirk on your lips.
his face turns bright red, to the point where he could pass as a tomato. he averts his eyes before putting his hand up to your cheek, pulling you in for a quick kiss.
as he pulls away, he looks at you softly. his facial expression looked as if nothing else mattered. he was happy, although you couldn't fully tell at first glace. he looked at you like you were a goddess, and he was the luckiest boy in the world. and he finally felt at peace in your soft, comforting arms.
