We started buddy reading Nalo Hopkinson's Skin Folk for #Pride and #readcaribbean month (not that we ever need an excuse to read Nalo Hopkinson). We are really enjoy the unique world of each story, and the discussion on sexuality, ingenerational trauma, & the magic the double click Hopkinson's writing inspired. We are really excited to read Tan-Tan and Dry Bone because Midnight Robber continues to be one of our favorite books! Reposted from @g.tea.reader As we close #pridemonth and #readcaribbean month, I would like to highlight a fave writer whose writing intersects these two identities: Nalo Hopkinson. I'm such a fan of her writing. She gives me all that I need: speculative, queer fiction with a heavy heavy influence of Caribbean history and lore. I love that she treats her queer characters as full and complete human beings, not just vehicles for trauma, or means to encourage growth and gratitude in a main character (looking at you Love After Love 👀). In Skin Folk, a collection of speculative fiction short stories, there's a story entitled Fisherman. A quick read that leaves an impression. The main character is a shy, sexually inexperienced, transmasculine fisherman who goes to a brothel for his first sexual encounter. Honestly, Nalo has set the bar for writing eroticism. Besides the erotic elements, the story is such an affirming one. And with her roots in Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad...she is truly a Caribbean treasure. Other Nalo books I recommend: - Midnight Robber - Brown Girl in the Ring - Falling in Love with Hominids Finally, keep your reads queer and Caribbean beyond June! . . . . . . [ID: Salima holds a copy of Skin Folk outdoors. In the background are some blooming heliconias. The books cover features the face of a Black woman in profile looking up from the bottom of the book. There's also her hand reaching towards a vine with purple flowers that floats in the center of the cover] . . . . . . #Pride #caribbeanlit #caribbeanreads #nalohopkinson #skinfolk #queerreads #readdiversely #speculativefiction #specfiction #caribbeanwriters #supportblackwomenwriters #blackwomenwriters https://www.instagram.com/p/CgXRp-Cpii6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I fell in love with this book cover the first time I saw it on Instagram last summer and immediately sent it to my group chat. Such a beautiful cover. I’m about halfway through this book and I really like it. I’m a big fan of young adult novels. Happy Haitian Independence Day! 🇭🇹 QOTD: What Haitian authored books are your favorites? Per the Haitian Embassy: January 1, 1804, Haiti made history by being the first black republic in the world and the first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. The first two days of the calendar year is dedicated to commemorate the Independence Day and celebrate Ancestors' Day. 🇭🇹🇭🇹FEATURED:🇭🇹🇭🇹 * Charming as a Verb by Ben Philippe * American Street by Ibi Zoboi * The Dewbreaker by Edwidge Danticat Here is a stack of books I plan to read this month to celebrate. 🙇🏾‍♀️ #Repost @cbareads • • • • • • I have a interest in New Orleans because of its Caribbean links and if you're looking for a book that covers the spaces and limits black women had to live in and African enslavement this is the book for you. The stories are so interesting and some are crazy but aren't all stories to do with African enslavement related to a mad situation? . Dont hesitate. Buy It and let me know what you thought of it. Dolphin, the Arctic Seal, Returns to Antigua and Barbuda in an Inspiring Children’s Book
Author,  editor, and writing coach Joanne C. Hillhouse releases her latest children’s book, Lost! A Caribbean Sea Adventure. Beautifully illustrated by Trinidadian artist Danielle Boodoo-Fortuné, Lost! is inspired by the story of an Arctic seal which found itself in the Caribbean seas a few years ago. The book pulls children into a fun adventure about kindness and friendship that will leave them with a greater appreciation of our marine environment. Lost! includes a fun maze which gives children a chance to help the lost seal find his way home.
Kirkus Reviewers dubbed the book “appealing …, all the more so for being based on real life” and praised it for giving children “…a chance to learn more about the work of environmentalists and Caribbean sea life.” –Kirkus Reviews
Marine educator, Carole McCauley, who has worked in both the Caribbean and the US, declared Lost! “A wonderful and inspiring story for all ages.”
In the book, Dolphin, much like his real life counterpart, the young male hooded seal Wadadli, finds himself stranded in the Caribbean Sea, and far from his home in the North Atlantic. Wadadli was rescued by the Coast Guard of Antigua and Barbuda, while the fictional seal, Dolphin, has a little help from a new underwater friend.
Award-winning author Joanne C. Hillhouse is the Antiguan and Barbudan author of The Boy from Willow Bend, Dancing Nude in the Moonlight, Fish Outta Water, Oh Gad!, Musical Youth, With Grace, and now Lost! A Caribbean Sea Adventure. Her fiction, non-fiction and poetry have been published in various Caribbean and international journals and anthologies. Joanne lives in Antigua and from there she freelances as a writer, editor, workshop/course facilitator, and writing coach; and runs the Wadadli Youth Pen Prize writing programme to nurture and showcase the literary arts.
Lost! A Caribbean Sea Adventure is published by CaribbeanReads Publishing. Books are available at bookstores across the Caribbean and at online booksellers. Lost! is a reimagining of Hillhouse’s book Fish Outta Water which was published by Pearson Education in 2013. Visit www.caribbeanreads.com for details.

I got some goodies today 🥰 // My mum and I stopped into one of the bookstores we have on the island and I managed to get a few books out of her. Every time I come into this bookstore I always try to pick up some books from the Bahamian section! I would like to have sizeable selection of Bahamian books soon 😂🇧🇸 • Feeling kinda guilty though because I’ve barely read anything since this week started and I’m supposed to be participating in #CaribAThon 💀 • • ———————————————————— #bahamianauthor #readcaribbean #caribbeanbookstagram #caribbeanreads #gailsaunders #susanwallace #bahamianbooks #bahamiansociety #blackbookstagram #bibliophile #bookstore #bookhaul #bookstagram #booklover #booklover (at New Providence, The Bahamas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBjR2FIgRxz/?igshid=1pmq0e8biu7hx
