We’re off and riding!
It is inevitable. The electric revolution is beginning, and I am a convert. I’m not completely to the stage of advocacy quite yet, but in my short transition to the electric world, the benefits for our family are obvious.
Firstly, it makes the choice to bike easier. My wife and I fight over who gets to ride the e-bike to work, and if you don’t get to, you ride anyway, on your old, sad, non-electric bike, but you feel like a loser. Your burning legs and obvious shortness of breath (we live at the top of a big hill) remind you that life could be easier.
And believe me, with two young kids (one with intense medical needs), two dogs, and a recently adopted cat who appears like food to one of the dogs – necessitating a “no intermingling” policy – our life is anything but easy. Having a joyful, quiet, relatively sweat-free commute is a godsend.
Secondly, and this goes in tandem to the above, having an e-bike (ours is a cargo bike as well) has made our car lame. If I ask my son if he wants to go to the store his inevitable response is “no thank you” (he’s a polite boy). If I add “on the bike” he sings a different tune. This compliance is unheard of and I’m actually excited to go too!
While we’re still in the honeymoon phase here, I don’t see that changing. Biking is better than driving, electric motor or not. Some trips, due to time limitations, are still out of our range by bike, and the electric doesn’t change that, but it does make short trips easier, faster, and more fun.
Frankie is getting used to his seat. he needs to build up his strength and stamina to be able to go for longer trips (in this picture he was very tired and fell asleep immediately, but we couldn’t not bring him on the maiden voyage).
All in all we can’t wait to see #whatabikecando thanks Yuba for giving us the opportunity to give it a go!
