For years, real estate predators have said they aren't making any new land. Today, I'm proud to tell you that this is, at long last, slightly incorrect. The seaborne microplastic crisis of abandoned fishing nets, old condoms, and 1996 Saturn SL1s has in recent months congealed into a single glorious island in the middle of the ocean, and we're doing condo pre-sales for it for just $350,000.
Now, I hear what you're asking on the message boards and at the town halls. Is this "land" consisting mostly of shopping bags and Garfield telephones actually sturdy enough to build several tonnes of condo building on top of? We simply don't know, but the important thing is that it doesn't keep you from speculating on the property. Buy one today, and then sell it in a month for twice what you paid, even before we broke ground on it. In fact, the price went up to $500k just while we were talking, so you better jump on it.
Don't worry, though. Just because we got the land for free, and are violating several hundred international regulations on human rights to build these buildings, doesn't mean that you're getting a bad deal. Sure, it's made of a flimsy reclaimed-timber frame made of old trees we found floating by, but if the walls ever catch on fire, the ocean is right there to put it out. Full of water. Couldn't be safer. Price is now $750k, to reflect the changing market dynamics of housing.
Investors, I mean homeowners, we regret to inform you that our esteemed construction partner, Scamco, has run away with the seed capital we paid them. We've got no way to get that money back, I'm totally gutted about it and we'll have to ask everyone for another $200,000 to resume construction.
After an audit conducted by our internal partners, it turns out that they had no expertise in this kind of construction in the first place, and couldn't build a 60-storey luxury condominium using my uncle's old bass fishing boat as a cargo barge. Why my uncle? Oh, my brother runs Scamco. Rest assured that we have no conflict of interest here, we don't let him sit in on board meetings that are held in the bedroom next to his. Come to think of it, in case any of you have family of your own that want to buy another of the condos in our building before we begin construction, it's only $1.5 million for the next week.

I'm continuing to read about alum and it's honestly fascinating how the concept of money, commodities, and power, shifts from culture to culture.
Europe had no silver circa 500-1500 AD. It was primarily exported in from Africa and through dealings with Persia, along with the Crusades. But throughout this time, the Catholic Church was still rich and powerful, and you have all the general European bickering at the time. If hacksilver was so common and valuable metal so rare, and defrauding so common, where were displays of wealth going?
Textiles.
The pope(s) used an effective monopoly on alum to wield power throughout Europe, threatening everyone who tried to mine their own alum with excommunication. After 1486, because England had no laws on the books to support the papal alum monopoly, they became a smuggling center, waylaying Spanish ships with Spanish alum by using the papal law to uphold the monopoly, then "commandeering" the alum cargo since it was now under English rule, and England had no legislative obligation to give it back to Italy, it was now theirs and could be used for English trade.
This was, obviously, extremely lucrative.
In 1503 the pope raised the price of alum, driving the Hapsburgs into (illegal) trade with England. They helped commission two massive Tudor gunships with the concession England supply them with alum. However, as this was going on, only the crown was able to sell alum and Henry VII fined private merchants and confiscated alum not brought by his own ships or from Tolfa, Italy. This netted him even more profit.
The pope(s) were obviously less than thrilled about this, and cut Henry VII out of their most recent crusading plans, as well as temporarily retracing their papal ambassador. Henry VII did not stop though, and set his son, Henry VIII up for stunning economic success.
... which he promptly squandered by restarting alum purchases from Italy, allowing them to boycott alum sales to England when his excommunication came due.
But all in all, there's this FASCINATING hole of economic history in alum that feels completely ignored! We think of pre-Renaissance era as (or, to be clear, I was taught that-) the pre-Renaissance era was a time of mostly miserable raids and crusading. Everyone was bickering for a seat at the table; there were a lot of popes and a lot of power-grabs. But the available commodity that was changing hands in Europe was alum and most of the power was tied up in paper and textiles.
We think of textiles as work that's been overshadowed since it was done by women, but it's not just that: it's economic power has been overshadowed too. When we see "yard of wool", we should still be thinking of all the processes and industry that went into dying that material, and alum is fundamental to that trade. England's power grew on their wool industry and alum privateering. Spain's influx of silver came from their colonies- but they also were part of England's back door alum trade that allowed the rest of Europe to slip from the church's grasp.

Alright uh so
Fractalis has a wife who he loves very much. She started as just a backstory detail for the dnd campaign he was a part of (before that fell apart), mainly as a reason for why he would want to escape from where he was adventuring.
Now she's an actual character lmao. This is Cirina! Read more about her below.
Cirina's upbringing is in a different category of strife compared to her husband's. She was born and raised in Arabel. Her merchant family was invested in the production and trade of the city's various exports, particularly the Arabel specialty of Bitter Black beer. As a child, she was often part of the caravans to other large cities where goods would regularly be sold and traded. She enjoyed the limited freedom those trips gave her. Even at a young age, the joy of seeing new things in new places was something she held onto for dear life. Familiarity and routine didn't bother her, but she much preferred to take in new information to learn how to adapt to a constantly changing social contract between fellow traders. Her curiosity for the new and exciting was fostered in her formative years in that she would hone her skill in picking other peoples brains and reading their intentions and needs as she grew up. She maintained a sprightly demeanor through her adolescence and into young adulthood, though that's not to say she was always optimistic. The way in which she would voice her frustration was wholehearted and honest, but it was often followed up by a diluted nihilism that kept her moving forward, causing her to push her frustration aside. While that technique helped to ease her momentary despair, reality would prove to test her resolve as time marched on.
Trade in Interior Faerun is highly competitive, and while being involved in the production of the staple drink of their home city was advantageous to an extent, Cirina's family experienced more valleys than peaks in their profits over time. They had to change their sales tactics, diversify their output, learn new trades, do something to provide a safety net when the keep they earned wasn't high enough to make ends meet. Cirina herself shaped up to be en excellent saleswoman every time a change in what was sold and who was being sold to took place. She could sell water to a fish if she knew enough about the fish from their first interaction, helped by her overall active and friendly personality. Despite her adaptability, the ceiling for how much her family could earn was lower than any of them would like to admit.
That is, earning the honest way.
Eventually, a client approached the family with a handsome proposition to ferry powerful magical contraband between Hilsfar and Westgate (with hired mercenaries as suitable protection). Though the journey back an forth was long and taxing, involving roughly 600 miles of land travel and 200 miles of sea travel in one direction, the client was willing and able to give tens of thousands in gold pieces per journey. They never asked what those objects were for, all the family knew is that if they followed through, they would be doing far better than their contemporary competitors. How could they possibly refuse? It didn't matter if the items were to be given to vampire lords or usurper kings in the end.
Cirina then became the face of this questionable operation, using her natural charm to dissuade guards at checkpoints from inspecting the precious cargo too closely. She often had to bite her tongue over the morals of committing to this trade agreement. She knew what she was doing was duplicitous, but compromising the trade meant losing everything, including the family's standing as reputable merchants should the agreement expire at any time. Nobody could know that they were complicit in facilitating potential magical arms dealings with the likes of those that do harm in the realm. Her conscience began collecting guilt with each lie and half-truth she told in the name of escorting the source of her pay. It couldn't be helped. She had a job to do, and she had to keep moving forward like always.
Yet the truth will always make itself known, no matter what.
One of the mercenaries charged with protecting the caravan ratted them out to a rival of their benefactor for profit. The rival confronted the family at a checkpoint on the way to Hilsfar, but rather than hand them over to the authorities to be hanged for their crimes, they gave them an ultimatum. They were to either cease all trade and fall into obscurity elsewhere, or be publicly executed to send a message to all traders operating with their prior wealthy partner.
The choice was obvious. Her family took the deal and ran into King's Forest, eventually settling in Mouth O' Gargoyles. They held onto their earned gold in secrecy, knowing full well that if their profits were discovered wherever they ended up, the source would be questioned. Holding onto the truth close to her chest ate away at Cirina more now than it did during the time she was the saleswoman for the operation. She had to do something with her now forcibly idle hands, if only to distract from the shame she was coated in. Why not woodcarving? Of the artisanal trades she'd already learned about out of curiosity, whittling and sculpting were not yet known to her, and she was now surrounded with enough material to last her a lifetime.
The locals were happy to direct her to the tiefling woodcutter for scraps to practice with.
This is how Cirina met her husband, Fractalis.
#lemon's art#lemony ocs#dnd#dungeons and dragons#cirina#I was debating on whether or not to give her a class but honestly she works best in my head as someone who isn't an adventurer#there's one more character involved in this that I need to introduce but that will have to wait

Electronic battery powered crane weighing scales on market for sale
Crane weighing scales, also known as crane scales or crane load cells, are specialized weighing devices designed for the purpose of lifting and weighing heavy loads using a crane or hoist. These scales are commonly used in various industries, particularly in construction, manufacturing, shipping, and logistics, where accurate weight measurements of suspended loads are critical.
Features and Characteristics:
Load Cell Technology: Crane weighing scales use load cells, which are sensors that measure the force or tension applied to them. When a load is suspended from the scale's hook or shackle, the load cell detects the tension force, which is then converted into a weight measurement.
Digital Display: Most crane scales are equipped with a digital display that provides real-time weight readings. These displays are often designed to be easily readable, even from a distance.
Remote Control: Many crane scales come with remote control units, allowing operators to control the scale and read the weight from a safe distance, especially when dealing with heavy or potentially dangerous loads.
Tare Function: Crane scales typically have a tare function, which allows operators to zero out the weight reading to account for the weight of slings, containers, or other rigging equipment.
Multiple Units: These scales can display weight measurements in various units, such as kilograms, pounds, ounces, or newtons, depending on the scale's design and application.
Capacity and Precision: Crane weighing scales are available in a wide range of weight capacities, from a few hundred pounds to several tons. The precision and accuracy depend on the specific model and application.
Applications:
Construction: In construction sites, crane scales are used to weigh construction materials like steel beams, concrete blocks, and pipes to ensure safe lifting and accurate placement.
Manufacturing: Crane scales are employed in manufacturing processes to weigh raw materials, components, and finished products, often in situations where a stationary scale is not practical.
Shipping and Logistics: In shipping and logistics facilities, crane scales are used to verify the weight of containers, cargo, and packages before loading onto trucks or ships to ensure compliance with weight regulations.
Agriculture: In agriculture, crane scales are used to weigh agricultural produce, such as bags of grain or bales of hay, before loading onto trucks for transport.
Utilities and Power Plants: Crane scales are used in power plants and utility maintenance to weigh heavy equipment, transformers, and machinery components.
Material Handling: In warehouses and distribution centers, crane scales are used to weigh pallets, crates, and other loads during material handling processes.
Marine and Offshore: In marine applications, crane scales are often used on ships and offshore platforms to weigh anchor chains, nets, and equipment.

Russian oligarch Abramovich evaded taxes through fake yacht hire scheme, media investigation says

Russian-Israeli oligarch Roman Abramovich evaded millions in taxes in EU countries through a fake yacht-for-hire scheme, according to a joint investigation by the BBC, The Guardian, and The Bureau of Investigative Journalism published on Jan. 28.
The businessman acquired five yachts in the 2000s that he then “hired” for himself through controlled companies to claim an exemption from value-added tax (VAT) in Cyprus and elsewhere, the investigation said, citing leaked documents.
Abramovich has a net worth estimated to be around $9 billion and has Russian, Israeli, and Portuguese citizenship. He was formerly the governor of the Chukotka region in Russia’s far east and previously owned Chelsea FC, which he was forced to sell after the outbreak of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
He and other top Russian oligarchs were sanctioned after the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The oligarch now resides alternatively in Tel Aviv, Istanbul, and Russia’s Sochi.
According to the investigation, Abramovich acquired the Eclipse, Ecstasea, Luna, Le Grand Bleu, and Pelorus superyachts shortly after getting rich from selling the Russian oil company Sibneft in 2005.
The vessels, owned by various companies registered in the British Virgin Islands ultimately administered by Abramovich’s trust, were registered as cargo, commercial, or passenger yachts and “leased” to the Cyprus-based company Blue Ocean Yacht Management.
Blue Ocean then reportedly rented the yachts to other companies, which were, in fact, also controlled by Abramovich. This scheme helped the businessman generate profit without paying VAT.
The oligarch’s companies falsely claimed the right to tax exemption by listing the yachts as central to their business. According to experts consulted by the journalists, this may amount to tax evasion.
Abramovich’s lawyers denied any knowledge of a tax evasion scheme.
The article came as part of the joint Cyprus Confidential investigation into files leaked in 2023 and led by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and Paper Trail Media.
Shortly after the outbreak of the full-scale invasion, Abramovich participated in peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Bloomberg reported that he visited Kyiv as part of the talks in April 2022, which his spokesperson denied.
Later in the year, Abramovich met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to help negotiate a prisoner exchange.
UK lawmakers criticize failure to use funds from Russian oligarch Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea FC for Ukraine
The sale of Chelsea FC generated 2.5 million pounds ($3.2 billion), which Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich said he would donate to Ukraine.

### **Netting Dreams and Challenges in General Santos City**
#### *How Globalization is Reshaping the Tuna Capital of the Philippines*
---
### **Opening Scene/Introduction**
As dawn breaks over Sarangani Bay, the harbor in General Santos City buzzes with activity. Boats, their hulls weathered by years of salt and sun, unload their precious cargo: yellowfin tuna, glistening in the early light. The air smells of brine, and the sound of haggling fills the port as buyers from local markets and global exporters inspect the catch.
For Mang Jun, a 52-year-old fisherman, this scene is a daily ritual. But today, his face reflects a mix of pride and worry. "The tuna is good, but getting them was harder than ever," he says, his hands roughened by decades of work at sea.
Mang Jun’s story, like many in General Santos City, is one of survival and adaptation. For decades, globalization has shaped this city, bringing both progress and pain. While it opened doors to international markets and elevated General Santos City as a global player in the tuna industry, it also brought challenges that test the resilience of its people.
---
### **Background and Context**
General Santos City has earned its title as the "Tuna Capital of the Philippines." Nestled in southern Mindanao, it thrives on the abundant resources of Sarangani Bay. Its yellowfin tuna has become a prized export, shipped to Japan for sushi, to the United States for steaks, and to Europe for gourmet dishes.
This success is the result of decades of globalization. Trade agreements, technological advances, and foreign investment have turned General Santos into a vital hub for the global seafood supply chain. However, this integration into the global market has come at a cost.
Policies such as trade liberalization and the Rice Tariffication Law, while designed to attract investment and stabilize markets, have inadvertently left smaller players vulnerable. For local fishers and small businesses, competing with international corporations and imported goods has become an uphill battle.
---
### **The Main Story: Challenges and Struggles**
#### **The Decline of Traditional Fishing**
Mang Jun's father, also a fisherman, used to catch tuna just a few kilometers from shore. "It was different back then," Mang Jun reminisces. "The sea was full of fish. Now, we have to sail farther, spend more on fuel, and even then, our catch is smaller."
The once-abundant waters of Sarangani Bay are under pressure from industrial fishing. Large-scale commercial fleets, armed with modern technology, dominate the open sea. These vessels can stay out for weeks, hauling in tons of fish, leaving little for small-scale fishers like Mang Jun.
Overfishing, driven by global demand, has depleted local fish stocks. International standards, such as eco-labeling and traceability requirements, add another layer of difficulty. While these standards are meant to ensure sustainability, they create barriers for small fishers who lack the resources to comply.
#### **The Disruption of Local Businesses**
Maria, a sari-sari store owner in Barangay Lagao, has seen her sales drop since foreign franchises and e-commerce platforms arrived in General Santos City. "Before, people bought everything from us. Now, they order online or go to big stores," she says, adjusting her store's cramped shelves.
Globalization has brought affordability and variety to consumers, but at the expense of local entrepreneurs. Online shopping platforms like Lazada and Shopee offer cheap, imported goods, often undercutting small retailers.
Farmers face a similar plight. The Rice Tariffication Law has allowed for the influx of cheaper imported rice, making it harder for local farmers to sell their produce. While consumers benefit from lower prices, farmers are left with shrinking profits and mounting debts.
#### **Environmental Costs**
Beyond economic struggles, the environmental impact of globalization looms large. Sarangani Bay, once teeming with life, faces threats from pollution and overfishing. Tuna canneries and increased shipping have polluted the waters, while coral reefs suffer from destructive fishing practices.
In response to growing urbanization, mangroves are being cleared, removing natural barriers against erosion and storms. These environmental changes not only harm biodiversity but also threaten the livelihoods of those who depend on the sea.
---
### **Broader Implications**
The story of General Santos City mirrors the experiences of many developing communities worldwide. Small-scale fishers in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand face similar challenges, competing against industrial fleets for depleting resources. In Kenya and India, local retailers struggle to survive amidst the rise of multinational corporations and online marketplaces.
These parallels highlight the global nature of these issues. Globalization, while creating opportunities, often exacerbates inequalities. Those with access to capital, technology, and global networks thrive, while marginalized communities are left vulnerable.
General Santos City also underscores the importance of sustainability. Overexploitation of resources for short-term gains threatens the long-term viability of industries that globalization depends on.

### **Hope and Resilience: Responses and Solutions**
#### **Community Empowerment**
Despite the challenges, the people of General Santos City are finding ways to adapt and fight back. Local fishing cooperatives, such as the Alliance of Tuna Handliners, advocate for sustainable practices and equitable trade. These groups help small-scale fishers secure funding, training, and market access while ensuring compliance with international standards.
Eco-tourism is emerging as a viable alternative. The annual Sarangani Bay Festival showcases the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, attracting visitors and generating income for locals. This shift toward tourism encourages environmental conservation while diversifying the economy.
#### **Government and Private Sector Initiatives**
The local government has partnered with private organizations to support small businesses. Programs that teach digital marketing and e-commerce skills are empowering entrepreneurs like Maria to compete in an increasingly globalized market.
Subsidies and grants for farmers and fishers aim to level the playing field. For example, training sessions on aquaculture and sustainable farming practices provide alternative income streams while reducing environmental impact.
#### **Innovation and Adaptation**
Fishermen are exploring new methods to maximize their catch sustainably. Solar-powered boats and GPS tracking systems are becoming more common, helping small-scale fishers save on costs and increase efficiency.
Meanwhile, local businesses are finding success in niche markets. Branding products as organic, artisanal, or eco-friendly appeals to conscious consumers, both locally and abroad. For instance, some tuna processors now market their products as sustainably sourced, fetching higher prices on international markets.
---
### **Conclusion**
The story of General Santos City is one of transformation and resilience. Globalization has brought both opportunities and challenges to this vibrant community. While it has connected the city to the world and fueled economic growth, it has also tested the limits of its people and resources.
Mang Jun, Maria, and countless others are navigating this complex landscape with determination. Their stories highlight the importance of inclusive policies, community-driven solutions, and sustainable practices. As General Santos City continues to chart its path in a globalized world, it offers valuable lessons for other communities facing similar struggles.
In the end, the city's resilience is its greatest strength—a testament to the enduring spirit of its people in the face of change.
