Meet Ivy and Margaret; two of the ladies who I spent time with at the residential home. Both these ladies really captured my heart with their stories, for very different reasons. Both ladies were in their 80's and Ivy mentioned that she was very lucky to have her family come to visit her daily whereas Margaret's family don't visit often as they have their own lives to lead. I appreciate that our lives are busy but making time for the loved ones in our lives is really important. Many of our elders have given up time to care for us and raise us throughout our lives so the least we can do is make sure they aren't always alone. We can learn so much from them, just hearing about their life experiences could be so valuable. Both of these ladies were full of smiles and laughter, which is lovely to see, they both said how grateful they were to have ladies come to visit who were smiley and engaging as it makes them feel alive. This shocked me, why would anyone not be these things? These guys are still human beings who need respect, consideration and support, they may be older and less able but more often than not their minds are young and active and we should be treating them no differently in terms of interaction.
