Over recent weeks, political turmoil raged in the form of mass demonstrations that saw 1 in 7 Hong Kong residents take to the streets to protest an extradition bill that would have allowed alleged suspects to be deported to stand trial in Mainland China, where the legal system is subject to the arbitrariness and discretion of the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The fear that any dissident could be targeted isn’t unfounded as stories about billionaires and booksellers being kidnapped by Beijing operatives, only to be prosecuted in show trials on the Mainland and in some cases even tortured in jail, are well known. The extradition bill left almost no room for doubt about China’s ambitions to further override the civil rights guaranteed to the people of Hong Kong by the Sino-British Joint Declaration and renege on the agreed-upon “One Country, Two Systems” framework.

For those who embrace the ideological frameworks of various forms of “Social Justice” Theory including postcolonialism, decolonialism, critical race theory and intersectional feminism, seeing the Asian inhabitants of a former colony raise its colonial flag simply does not compute. Within this ideological conception of the world there is a very simple understanding of power dynamics in which oppression must always come from people seen as having dominant identities – white, male, western, heterosexual, cisgender, ablebodied and thin – and be inflicted upon those seen as having marginalized identities – people of color, colonized or indigenous people, women, LGBT, disabled and fat people.  When all of these elements are considered together, we get the framework of ‘intersectionality’ and it is through the language and activism of intersectional scholars and activists that most people encounter these ideas.

Eastern people who complicate the narrative of Western oppressor and Eastern Oppressed are understood to be speaking into and perpetuating oppressive discourses of colonial power which apply much more broadly than their own situation. From this perspective, by aligning themselves symbolically with the flag or philosophically with the ideas wrought by colonial legacy, the protesters were understood to completely invalidate the legitimacy of their liberation movement. Other criticisms reserved for the protesters include rebukes for lacking sensitivity and solidarity toward other countries with victims of colonialism. The journalist Ben Norton went so far as to say that the British flag was a symbol of “genocide, murder, racism, oppression and robbery,” and that the “pro-democracy” activists in Hong Kong were in effect, pro-colonialist groups, funded and backed by the “Western NGO-Industrial Complex.”

This argument perfectly exemplifies how one’s basic reasoning and moral calculus can get muddled when steeped too heavily in this kind of postcolonial theory. To deride the fight against one of the most repressive and autocratic regimes is to completely undermine and disparage Hong Kong’s struggle for democracy and freedom. Semantically equating being “pro-democracy” to being “pro-colonialist”, where the latter is essentialized to “pro-evil,” Norton instantly reveals the moral incongruence of embracing the actual oppressor (China) at the expense of the oppressed (Hong Kong), all in the name of opposing an institution which has become a bogeyman used by progressives to blame only the West for all of the world’s ills. Does it ever occur to him and other like-minded critics that perhaps the vast majority of the protesters simply do not want to live under the tyranny of a surveillance state that censors dissidents and implements dystopian social credit score systems?

The entire historical trajectory of our species and the geopolitics of our world are grafted upon a map drawn by colonial violence. Colonialism has existed in nearly all states and civilizations and has been the norm, not the exception, for the better part of human history. Since the ancestors of modern humans set out of Southeastern Africa around 70,000 years ago, despite the clear record of intermixing, people have been conquering territory, sometimes by way of committing genocide. Proto-Indo-European Yamnaya people spread from the Pontic steppe and ended up settling from the Tarim basin to Ireland millennia ago. The Thule displaced the Dorset in Canada’s Arctic less than a thousand years ago, the latter being almost wiped off from the face of the earth. Our own DNA bears testimony to this tyrannical tendency embedded in us: 1 in 200 men on Earth can trace their ancestry from Ghengis Khan. The status of conqueror and the conquered has changed hands repeatedly throughout history. These and countless other examples, such as the expansion of the Umayyad Caliphate into the Iberian Peninsula and the occupation of Eastern European states by the Ottoman empire, should shatter the myth that colonialism was a uniquely Western transgression. With the moral arc slowly bending toward justice, post-colonial guilt has taken a stranglehold on Western thought, manifesting itself in two forms: one constructive and the other, destructive.

Constructive guilt allows us to critically evaluate various historical injustices and current inequalities that were shaped by European colonialism. Destructive guilt leads to the moral myopia exemplified by some progressive reactions to the plight of the Hong Kong people, which disturbingly echo that of Chinese-run state media. For one, the sight of the British flag among the Hong Kong protests has united intersectional progressives and CCP apologists in calling the massive demonstration a Western-backed uprising and accusing them of, ironically, “internalized colonialism.” This particular criticism is both condescending and patronizing as it alludes to the lack of self-agency among Hong Kong protesters, who must be so mentally weak as to become unwitting shills and puppets for the Western agenda. This epitomizes the postmodern notion of colonialism stretching beyond just physical land occupations to include a sort of cultural or ideological transformation of the mind. This is, indeed, exactly how postcolonial scholars from Frantz Fanon to Edward Said to Gayatri Spivak have seen it. If there is any merit to this idea, then why isn’t what China is doing considered a form of colonization of the Hong Kong mindset? Do we only care about the injustice of colonialism when the respective groups, defined as the “colonizer” versus the “colonized,” harbor differential levels of melanin? This logic not only provides the license to discount instances of colonialism between ethnically homogenous groups, it also allows progressive elites who rail against the lack of civil liberties, the imprisonment of dissidents, the mistreatment of minorities, abuses in detention centers and police brutality back home in the West, to be willfully blind to the hypocrisy of somehow supporting some of the very same things for the people of Hong Kong.

MANILA – Filipina nurse Minnie Klepacz has been awarded a British Empire Medal for her "tireless work to support her colleagues and community" during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Klepacz, a matron for ophthalmology, leads the hospital's Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) Network at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

"What an incredibly proud day for Team UHD (University Hospitals Dorset) -- our brilliant matron Minnie has been recognized in the Queen's birthday honors list and awarded a British Empire Medal. Minnie was honored for her tireless work to support her colleagues and community during Covid-19, and said she feels 'truly humbled' to be recognized," the UHD National Health Service Foundation Trust announced Saturday.

In its report, UHD shared that Klepacz also provided support to the Filipino community outside work, cooked meals for colleagues who were recovering after being in intensive care, and organized virtual community events to offer comfort and reassurance.

Minnie said never in her wildest dream she thought of getting an award and that she felt "privileged and honored" to be recognized.

"When I saw an email from the Cabinet Office, I was so worried and thought I’d done something wrong. I plucked up the courage to read it again and responded asking if it was a spam email because I just couldn’t believe it. They told me it was true and then rang me to reassure me, I couldn’t believe it," she was quoted as saying by the UHD.

Klepacz has worked for the hospital for 19 years having arrived to work in the United Kingdom from the Philippines as a teenager.

“This award is not just for me, it’s for everyone who works here and goes above and beyond. As a Filipino, I’d also like to share this award with all staff from a BAME background. I’m truly humbled to work with amazing colleagues. They inspire me and give me confidence," she said.

Minnie, who lost 11 friends to Covid-19, added: “Covid was really challenging, and most hospital staff affected by it came from a BAME background. I had my own worries, but I had to put that aside and think, how can I support people, what act of kindness and humanity can I provide. If people need help, then I’ll help them.

“I’m going to send my medal home to the Philippines. Growing up, my mum always used to display all our awards prominently in the lounge as she was so proud of us all. As I can’t visit my family right now, it’s only right they have my medal.” (PNA)

Hovis is bringing its iconic 1973 advert ‘The Bike Ride’ back to TV screens as the British breadmaker looks to stir up brand love among a new generation. The original collaboration between Hovis, creative agency Collett Dickenson Pearce (CDP) and director Sir Ridley Scott depicts an old man recalling his days as a baker’s boy struggling to push his bike up a cobbled hill. By mining the brand’s rich heritage CDP came up with the classic tagline: ‘Hovis: As good for you today as it has always been’. Now, 40 years since the ad first aired, ‘The Bike Ride’ (otherwise known as The Boy on the Bike) is returning to TV screens tonight (3 June). It uses footage remastered by the British Film Institute and a re-recording of the soundtrack – Antonín Dvorak’s New World Symphony – performed by descendants of the original Ashington Colliery brass band from 1973. Despite being four decades old, affection remains strong for ‘The Bike Ride’. Last year, it was crowned the nation’s favourite advert from the 1970s in an exclusive Marketing Week and YouGov Omnibus poll. Then, in May, the advert was named the most iconic of the past 60 years, according to research released by Kantar. Some 22% of the 1,200 UK consumers questioned said The Bike Ride was the most seminal ad of the past six decades, while a further 15% described it as the most emotional. “It puts into question, what’s been going on in the advertising industry for the last 40- plus years,” jokes current Hovis marketing director, Jeremy Gibson. Gibson believes a mix of nostalgia, a great creative concept and dedication to the craft have driven enduring affection for The Bike Ride over the past 40 years. Compared to the way ads are shot today, with multiple scenes and often aggressive price messaging, Gibson believes the advert stands out as something different. “Watching the original 45 seconds of that ad it’s almost a moment of pause and that’s why it has cut through as advertising has evolved and changed… because it becomes almost timeless and it’s a heart-warming thing to watch,” Gibson tells Marketing Week. “It celebrates a time in the advertising world when emotion and feel were much more important than ‘our phone is faster’ or ‘our product is cheaper’.” While the research highlighted an enduring love for the ad, Gibson explains it also felt like the right time to bring back The Bike Ride as it conveys a sense of there having been a healthier time as today’s society feels increasingly divided. To help tell this story, the re-release of The Bike Ride will be supported on social media with additional footage, including interviews with Hovis’s marketing director in the 1970s, Alan Hepburn, and director Sir Ridley Scott. Hepburn’s brief back in 1973 was to create an ad that would allow Hovis to tug at the audience’s heartstrings, rather than simply being obsessed by taking sales volumes from X to Y. “I asked Alan about how they wrote the brief back then compared to how we write it now and it was less around taking numbers, it was more about ‘we just want more consumers to love Hovis’. That’s a really simple brief but really hard to execute,” Gibson explains. “They absolutely hit the nail on the head with not just a great execution, but also a hell of a director who, from talking to Alan, took control on the day and told the client to just sit over there, which was fascinating to hear.” The filming of ‘The Bike Ride’ in 1973.Scott recalled the very end of the third day on location at Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset, when the clouds were coming in and all the equipment went back in the van. Then suddenly the sun came out and he told everyone to unpack for a re-shoot. Hepburn remembers that moment vividly as he was about to set off home in his car and suddenly there was a “palaver” as the team reset the entire shoot in order to capture the sunlight. Gibson marvels at the “level of love, care, passion” displayed by the brand, agency and director, which he believes comes through in the quality of the advert. This is the first time Hovis has revisited its Bike Ride roots since the 2008 campaign ‘Go on Lad’. The two-minute film follows a young boy running with a loaf of Hovis through history, from the sinking of the Titanic and World War I, to VE Day street parties, miners strikes and the Millennium celebrations. The advert ends with the classic line ‘As good today as it has always been’. Since then, Hovis has cut its range of pancakes, crumpets and muffins to focus on the quality of its core bread products. There is still growth to be had in the UK bread market, which in 2018 rose in value by 0.7% year on year to £3.5bn, according to Mintel figures. Pre-packaged bread represented 70% of the total volume sold. In September Hovis launched a new seeded batch, tapping into what Mintel describes as the trend for “bread with bits”, a category that contributed more than £30m to the sales of bread in 2017-2018. To support this clear focus on the core product, last year Hovis released ‘It’s Just Bread’, a campaign focused on bread as an everyday product. While the campaign did raise brand awareness, Gibson feels that, on reflection, the message was not as “pinpointed” as they would have liked. “We’re moving now into celebrating our product and our category, as opposed to making it a bit more every day. That’s what we’ll continue to do and using this Boy on the Bike relaunch as a bit of a springboard to do that,” he adds. Why an iconic ad can be a double-edged sword The advert itself, combined with the subsequent place it created for Hovis in the fabric of British culture, was the main reason Gibson wanted to join the bakery business as marketing director in December 2018. Excited about taking a brand with 130 years of heritage through its next stage, Gibson came on board at Hovis following two years as group head of marketing for Innocent Drinks. Prior to that he worked for three years as marketing director at PepsiCo, leading the juice and cereals teams, following five years at Molson Coors, which included a stint as global brand director. Having worked outside the Hovis business, he appreciates that an advert like The Bike Ride is a powerful asset for any brand and something other marketers would “break their arm for”. Speaking to Marketing Week last year, Alan Hepburn credited the The Bike Ride with kickstarting the baker’s transition into a household name. READ MORE: Sir Ridley Scott on why the 1970s was the ‘golden age’ of advertising Gibson accepts that working for a brand which such an iconic advert in its cannon can be a bit of a “double-edged sword”. “If you didn’t have it you’d wish you did and if you do have it you go, ‘how do you beat that?’.
