Unity, Google's cardboard devkit & x86 mobile phones

Some months ago I stopped working on my mobile vr projects, because I couldn't get them running correctly on devices with an x86 architecture ─ which I use for testing. So if you are a vr developer and work with Unity plus Google's cardboard/daydream devkit you might have faced a similar issue. It all worked well with early versions of the devkit and Unity, but the newer versions just seem to work with phones that use an ARM architecture.

After some research on the problem I found out that some files were missing in the Unity-version of the devkit. I read some forum posts about the problem and how to solve it. But the advices were just pointing in the right direction; a proper solution was not given or didn't work. However, after hours of trail and error I found a way to solve the problem.

Here is the solution: Dowload the file sdk-base-1.120.0.aar from github. Open the archive (e.g. with 7-Zip) and it's folder jni. Extract the folders x86 and arm64-v8a from it. Now go to the directory "..\your project\Assets\GoogleVR\Plugins\Android" and open the archive gvr.aar. Open the folder jni and add the two previously extracted folders to it. Next time you build your app it will work also on x86 mobile phones (Unity 2017.3.1f1; GVR SDK for Unity v1.120.0)

So the needed files are in the native android cardboard devkit at least. So we just need to copy them over. It took me a while until I found out what exactly has to placed where in the file structure. But finally I got it. So if you were facing the same problem I hope I could help you. The less notable tapes are worth considerably less but they are really cool things to collect.

#4 Beanie Babies: Beanie Babies were a huge hit among children and a favorite collector item. Possibly the most notable among these is the Princess Diana Beanie Baby which I found on Ebay for an astonishing price of $30,000. Now that price tag is incredibly overblown as you can find this particular Beanie Baby for around $10 if you look around, but that doesn’t mean its not worth collecting if you enjoy them.

#3 Yugio Cards: Yugioh was a card game that came out a few years after the much more popular Pokemon, but was still a huge success in its own right. Currently a 1st Edition Legend of the Blue Eyes White Dragon booster box (which consists of 36 booster packs) routinely sells for well over $10,000. Unlike the first two on the list this product actually does sell for this much among hard core collectors. To put this into more perspective, The SDK Blue Eyes White Dragon card that came in the Kaiba Starter Deck sells in mint condition for over $2,000 alone, that one card came in a box that sold for $9.99 when they were new.

#2 Star Wars Action Figures: Star Wars was a ground breaking movie franchise that Disney has “revived” (personal feelings aside). Whether you’re a fan or not the action figures have always been where the money is for Star Wars. If you are lucky enough to still own any retro figures from the 80′s then you may be sitting on a gold mine. The most lucrative figure in this collection would be the 1979 Boba Fett Action Figure, this figure sells for upwards of $15,000 on Ebay if its sealed and in good condition. If you can’t afford this however, Disney has partnered with Hasbro to re release the original retro figures in their Retro Collection so you can still have a slice of history at an affordable price.

#1 Pokemon Cards: I’m sure you could have guessed this was coming, how many of us didn’t collect Pokemon as kids? Pokemon has seen a bit of resurgence with the release of Pokemon Go although i’m not really sure it ever went anywhere, more likely we just forgot about it. Vintage Pokemon cards produced by Wizards of the Coast (who no longer make Pokemon cards) have skyrocketed in price over the past several years. The most expensive Pokemon products you can buy are of course the 1st Edition Base Set Booster Box that sells on Ebay for the astronomical price of $80,000. If that seems insane, most of that value can be attributed to one card. That one card is of course the 1st Edition Base Set Charizard which in gem mint condition sells alone for upwards of $55,000. I don’t know about you but I wish I had a time machine so I could go back and slap myself for not holding onto these little pieces of cardboard.

Was able to get the basics of the AR map and Memory log functionality done this weekend and connect a small MVP demo at the end of the game jam.

Some things I learned were:

1) Dynamically changing XR settings at runtime and using the Magic Window implementation for hybrid apps using Google Cardboard SDK. Will have to implement a VR mode toggle as a quality of life update after some playtesting.

2) Blender has awesome modifiers that unfortunately do NOT translate well to Unity, so will explore procedural animations/visual shader graph instead.

3) Was able to have some guest appearances from friends throughout the weekend to collaborate on some voice acting & writing. Which was SO fun!

4) Accessiblity for the audio portions of the experience will be something of interest in the future. Whether it's a toggle feature or just built in with both audio & text will be something to test with players to see what is the most optimal level of information without cognitive overload.

5) Churros are so good but messy.

It was really nice to work with some other folks around to at least chat with. This has been a collaborative but mostly solo endeavor on my part so it was refreshing to walk around and see what other folks were working on!!

Anyways next steps will be debugging the dialogue as well as adding a proper Game Manager for saving states throughout the game.

Creature Card In Pokemon, the Creature are called Pokemon. In YuGiOh, the Creature are called Monster. Pokemon have Evolution Stages: The common known Evolution Stages are Baby, Basic, Evolution Stage 1, and Evolution Stage 2. Pokemon Card Distinction: The Pokemon Element are Fire, Water, Grass, Lightning, Fighting, Psychic, Metal, and Dark. Monster Card Distinction: The Monster Attribute are Light, Dark, Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth. As for the Monster Type, there are many types. To name some examples: Spellcaster, Fiend, Warrior, Dragon, Winged Beast, Pyro, and Aqua.

Draw Cards From Deck Comparison: The following examples are cards from the first few release sets. Basically, the differences are noticeable. There are plays depended on those cards. YuGiOh: “Pot of Greed”, “Jar of Greed”, and “Upstart Goblin” Description: “Pot of Greed”, “Jar of Greed”, and “Upstart Goblin” are limited 1 Card of the Same Name per Deck. “Pot of Greed”: Draw 2 cards, “Jar of Greed”: Draw 1 card, “Upstart Goblin”: Draw 1 card. Your opponent gain 1000 Life Point. Pokemon: “Bill” and “Professor Oak” Description: “Bill” and “Professor Oak” could have up to 4 Copies. “Bill”: Draw 2 Cards, “Professor Oak”: Discard your hand, then draw 7 cards

Noticeable Gameplay: 1. From the draw cards comparison, YuGiOh focus is more toward 1 card than combination of cards. Example: In Pokemon you would setup a play with multiple (6-7) cards or advance play could be averaging from 10-15 cards. As for YuGiOh, you could setup your traps against your opponent with 1-2 Trap Cards. Or use a powerful Magic Card like “Raigeki” or “Dark Hole” to destroy all of your opponent Monsters on the field. In other words, YuGiOh play need lesser cards to setup/execute. Even though, YuGiOh play need lesser cards to setup/execute, but this does not mean YuGiOh TCG have lesser professionalism than Pokemon TCG. Both Pokemon TCG and YuGiOh TCG have their professionalism. 2. YuGiOh have 40 cards deck. This allow Players with higher odd of accessing their cards from their decks. 3. YuGiOh Side Deck, open up opportunity to creating Gameplay in between matches. Note: Before the North America YuGiOh TCG release date, I already made all the comparison of Pokemon TCG and YuGiOh TCG. One of the reasons, because I have PT History and PT Reputation.

After the comparison, the following are what I came up with: 1. Man-Eater Bug X3, Fissure X3, and Trap Hole X3: Would be my deck base. These cards are usually a 1 card to 1 card trade. Example: When you use a “Fissure” or “Trap Hole” you destroy 1 of your opponent’s monster. Man-Eater Bug Flip Effect is similar to “Fissure” or “Trap Hole” such as its also allow you to destroy 1 of your opponent’s monster. Compare those cards to “Tribute To The Doomed” and “Dark Hole” there are differences. The following are examples: “Tribute To The Doomed”: You have to discard 1 card from your hand to destroy 1 of your opponent’s monster. This mean if you don’t have cards in your hand, you cannot use “Tribute to The Doomed”. “Dark Hole”: Destroy all monsters on the field. If you have monsters on the field, then those monsters would be destroy. So, if you have more monsters on the field than your opponent, then your opponent’s would benefit from the “Dark Hole”. 2. Raigeki and Monster Reborn: These cards are listed in the Rulebook as Limited Card. So, if you decided to join the YuGiOh Tournament in the future, would be recommended to start using the Limited Card rule. Since I have Pokemon TCG Tournament First Place Streak, I pictured myself joining the YuGiOh Tournament. Note, there will be YuGiOh Players that constructed their deck with multiple copies of “Raigeki” and “Monster Reborn”. 3. Monster Summoning: 1 Monster summoning per turn. “The Flute of Summoning Dragon”: If “Lord of D.” is under your control, you may summon up to 2 Dragon Type Monsters from your hand into your Field. “Ultimate Offering”: If “Ultimate Offering” is under your control, you may summon as many Monster from your hand into your Field. These cards are my transition to YuGiOh TCG. In the Pokemon TCG, you may play as many Pokemon from your hand into the Active Spot and Bench. So, I got use to using “The Flute of Summoning Dragon” and “Ultimate Offering”. Because I used these cards often, so I was able to work around this 1 Monster summoning per turn rule. This will be important in later on Deck Construction.

2002-2003 Mission Bay High School (MBHS) YuGiOh Gathering I Pre-Ordered 1 Cardboard Box of YuGiOh TCG Decks before the North America release date of the YuGiOh TCG. Those Decks are “Starter Deck Kaiba” (SDK) and “Starter Deck Yugi” (SDY). Read “1 Cardboard Box of YuGiOh TCG Decks” content for more information. Cards from those Starter Decks are tradeable from my surrounding. But, I limited this card to only 1, because you have to skip your Battle Phase if you used “Soul Exchange”. One of the reasons is “Blue-Eyes White Dragon” need to tribute 2 of your Monsters on the field to summon. By using the “Soul Exchange” you tribute 1 of your opponent’s Monster and 1 of your Monster instead of 2 of your Monsters.

Furthermore, in the Koami Official YuGiOh TCG Rulebook, there is a section on Forbidden Cards and Limited Cards. This section also included a list of cards that are limited to you could only have 1 card of the same name in yours deck. At the MBHS (Mission Bay High School) YuGiOh TCG Gathering, cards like “Dark Hole” and “Monster Reborn”, I could see that there are more than 1 card of the same name in YuGiOh Players deck. “Dark Hole” and “Monster Reborn” are on the limited card rule list. I concluded that not all the YuGiOh Players at the MBHS YuGiOh TCG Gathering have a PT (Pokemon Tournament) Reputation. My PT Reputation included a First Place Streak in the PT.

Better late than never. The limited card rule list also included “Pot of Greed”. When you use the “Pot of Greed” spell you draw two cards from your deck. During my PT Final Round Matches, there are time in one of my turns, I would draw about 30-40 cards from my deck. Sometime I would draw even more than 40 cards in one turn. So, there are differences in YuGiOh TCG and Pokemon TCG. If I were to ignore the limited official rules, I would probably want to have more than 1 “Pot of Greed” in my deck. One of the reasons is I have PT experience of drawing many cards from my deck in just one of my turns. Anyway, I have a PT reputation, so I cannot just ignore those limited card official rules.

Those YuGiOh Players who are using more than 1 “Dark Hole” and 1 “Monster Reborn” could destroy all of their Opponent’s Monsters with “Dark Hole”. This mean that they don’t have to Battle against Monsters that are at very high level such as the “Blue-Eyes White Dragon”. After they destroyed those very high level Monsters, then they would use the “Monster Reborn” to summon the destroyed Monsters from their Opponent’s Graveyard to their side of the field. My “Blue-Eyes White Dragon” Deck have 3 “Blue-Eyes White Dragon” Monster Cards. I have 3 “Lord of D.” Monster Cards. “Lord of D.” could protect Dragon Type Monsters from Traps, Spells, and Monster Effects.

Card Traffic And Card Services

Card Traffic Card Traffic mean to keep the card activities flowing, so that there is a flow in the TCG cards trading activities. The reason the word, Trade is in Trading Card Game (TCG) is because there are a lot of trading activities in TCG. To generalize the word, trade trade could have the same meaning as to buy. Example: You trade your money for cards. So, you could said I trade my money for those cards. This is same meaning as I use my money to buy those cards. The following are example of TCG Card Traffic: Store, Vendors, Import/Export, Warehouse, Depot, Swap Meet, Flee Market, Auction Houses, Convention Center, Trading Center, and so on. As for the Internet, there are Online Auctions and Online Stores.

Card Services The 2 known Card Services are grading services and protection services. Usually Card Services places would offer both of those services, so you don’t have to go to two different places for both of those services. In “Beckett” Magazine (Monthly subscription magazine that entirely focus on Pokemon) and “Top Deck” Magazine, there are Pokemon TCG grading services and protection services listed inside those pages of those magazines. The price for those services could be from $6 to $20 per card. Depending on the rarity of the card. One of the reasons is the Charizard First Edition could be worth up to $600. If the card have grading services and protection services, then the card decrease value will be limited. Example: You went to a TCG store, you pay the cashier, $3.99 for a Pokemon TCG booster pack. Inside the booster pack, you got a Charizard First Edition. If you send your Charizard card to the grading services and protection services by mail and pay the fee. Then, you don’t have to worry about the $600 will have decrease of value. The exception is TCG Great Depression (This is years of time away). Another reason for those grading services and protection services is to avoid counterfeit TCG cards. In other words, those services have their roles in TCG Universe. But, TCG background/reputation and Pokemon Master/Duelking title would be a more reliable sources. The following are some of the reasons: 1. You have to find those grading services and protection services 2. You have to mail your card to those grading services and protection services. Example: What happen if your mail got stolen? 3. You have to pay $6 to $20 per card fee. When you add up all those fee could be expensive. 4. Once graded and put in the protective hard case, you cannot play with those cards 5. The grading services and protection services could take up to days of time. Example: The time your mail get to those services. The time those services needed to grade those cards and put those cards in the protective hard case. Express mail might cost more.

1 Cardboard Box of YuGiOh TCG Decks

In 2001 during the PT Prime Time (Read “2001 PT Prime Time” article for more information), I got into PT Intermission (Read “PT Intermission” article for more information). During that PT Intermission, I took the Privileged Summer Class Advance Chemistry (Read “Summer Class Advance Chemistry” article for more information) and I went to Provinces of China and Macao (an isolated city in China at a remote island.) Macao is known for the casinos and race tracks.

Furthermore, I have brought the 1999 “Name of The Game” Pokemon Tournament (PT) that was going to shut-down in Pacific Beach neighborhood to 2001 PT Prime. In those 3 years of time, there were a lot of changes at the PT, my life, my household, and my surrounding. During that time, I have started my TCG Career and my TCG Commitment.

In TFPD CSS (Tournament First Place Deck Champion Streak Series) P Sche (PTTS Schedule), there are contents on the first 10 First Places I got in the PT. Examples of those contents: The activities that was going on inside the PT. The changes that was happening in my life such as my household and my surrounding. The PT is weekly. 1 month equal to 4 PT. 3 years would be over 100 PT. This mean I got over 100 First Places in the PT.

During the PTTS, I have talked about my PT experience during those 3 years of time. Also, I have wrote articles about PT related during those 3 years of time. My PT history/background and PT status/reputation started during those 3 years of time. The following are examples: 1. I have a PT First Place Streak 2. I have a Pokemon Master/Duelking title 3. I have the largest collection of Pokemon TCG cards in San Diego, CA 4. I have brought the PT to PT Prime Tim

During the YuGiOh TCG sold out period, I got the spotlight among YuGiOh Players in my neighborhood because I was able to provide YuGiOh TCG supplies to keep the Card Traffic flowing. Those YuGiOh Players that came to me for the YuGiOh TCG supplies did not posted any questions, because they needed those YuGiOh TCG supplies that I have. Example: The YuGiOh TCG sold out period was happening in the Pacific Beach (PB) neighborhood. A few YuGiOh Players even praised me for able to keep up with the demands. But, I have put a lot of decision making into making that Pre-Order of 1 Cardboard box of YuGiOh TCG Decks. Even though, there were positive results, but I have the following concerns: 1. I have my TCG history/background and my TCG status/reputation to keep 2. There were YuGiOh TCG transition. Example: How well would North America going to accept the imports of YuGiOh TCG?

In conclusion, I have my reasons for making that Pre-Order of 1 Cardboard box of YuGiOh TCG Decks. At the same time, that Pre-Order supplies have got the spotlights in the Pacific Beach (PB) neighborhood, because of the YuGiOh TCG sold out period.

Among the range of decks, the plays in this deck required more setups and combinations than the other decks. Also, there is Monster Effects emphasis. So, if looking to construct a deck that require more steps to execute the plays, then this deck fall in that category. In addition, this deck does not have a lot of focus on having Monsters with high Attack values, but mixing defensive Spells, defensive Traps, and Monster Effects that are in this deck, you would not have to worry too much about it during your match.

PT Focus: 1. Dealing direct damage to your opponent Life Point without using Attack 2. Various Monster Effect And Monster Effect that allow you to search your deck for Monster 3. Card Effect that could buy you time to setup your plays

Gameplay: Since the first few seasons of the YuGiOh Tournament (YT), there were decks constructed with similar focuses like PT Focus. In addition, “Princess of Tsurugi” is known to be in deck that have the following focuses: 1. Dealing direct damage to your opponent Life Point without using Attack 2. Attacking opponent Life Point directly

YT Tip: 1. “Princess of Tsurugi” Plays “Princess of Tsurugi” Flip Effect will deal direct damage to your opponent Life Point, so that you don’t have to use attack to deal damage. The amount of damage is equal to the number of Spell/Trap your opponent have on his/her Field. 500 Damage for each Spell/Trap. A. Set “Princess of Tsurugi” in face down Defense Battle Position B. If your opponent know about this deck, then there are face down Monsters on your side of the Field your opponent would want to avoid attacking. Example: “Cyber Jar”, “Man-Eater Bug”, and “The Unhappy Maiden”. Also, if your opponent attack a face down “Witch of the Black Forest” or “Sangan” and destroyed them, then “Witch of the Black Forest” and “Sangan” Effect will be trigger from the attack. C. If your opponent is anticipating “Princess of Tsurugi” plays by not having Spell(s)/Trap(s) on his/her Field, then your opponent have left his/her Field without Spell/Trap. D. The “Robin’ Goblin” Effect could discard cards in your opponent’s hand. Mixing in this effect into your plays might cause your opponent to put Spell/Trap on his/her Field.

2. “Cannon Soldier” Plays “Cannon Soldier” Effect is you tribute a Monster on your Field to deal 500 damage to your Opponent’s Life Point. A. There are 3 “Witch of the Black Forest” and 3 “Sangan” in this deck. Those Monster Effects have similar effect. This effect is known as the Search Effect. Example: This effect allow you to search your deck for a Monster card. Then, add that Monster card in your hand. Use the “Cannon Soldier” Effect with the Search Effect by tributing either “Witch of the Black Forest” or “Sangan”. You deal 500 damage to your Opponent’s Life Point. Also, you get to search your deck for a Monster card. B. From all the Monster Effects in this deck and Side Deck, there are a range of Monster Effects to choose from. When you are searching for a Monster card, because of “Witching of the Black Forest” Effect or “Sangan” Effect, you are opening up opportunity for yourself to create plays. C. Mix in “Robbin Goblin” Effect with “Cannon Soldier” Effect. You deal 500 damage to your Opponent’s Life Point. Also, your opponent’s have to discard a card in his/her hand. D. Mix in “Michizure” Effect with “Cannon Soldier” Effect. You deal 500 damage to your Opponent’s Life Point. Also, you get to destroy 1 Monster on your opponent’s side of the Field. E. Mix in “Scapegoat” Effect with “Cannon Soldier” Effect. You could deal up to 2000 damage to your Opponent’s Life Point. F. Mix in “Change of Heart” Effect with “Cannon Soldier” Effect. (“Snatch Steal” Effect is similar to this.) I. You take control of 1 Monster on your Opponent of side of the Field. II. Use the Flip Effect from that Monster. III. Use the “Cannon Soldier” Effect to tribute that Monster to deal 500 damage to your Opponent’s Life Point

3. “Ultimate Offering” Plays “Ultimate Offering” Effect is you pay 500 Life Point to have 1 Extra Normal Summon. A. There are 3 “Witch of The Black Forest” and 3 “Sangan” in this deck. Use the Search Effect from those Monster Effects to search for “A Cat of Ill Omen” from your deck. Then, add that card to your hand. B. Use “A Cat of Ill Omen” to search for “Ultimate Offering” from your deck. Then, place that card on top of your deck. C. Once you have an “Ultimate Offering” on your Field, depending on your Life Point, you may have multiple Extra Normal Summon on one turn. I. Use the Extra Normal Summon to summon “Witch of the Black Forest” and “Sangan” from your hand to your Field. II. Use the “Cannon Soldier” Effect to tribute those “Witch of the Black Forest” and “Sangan” on your Field. This allow you to deal 500 damage to your Opponent’s Life Point. Also, search for another “Witch of the Black Forest” or “Sangan” from your deck. Then, put that card in your hand. III. Repeat I and II until your Opponent’s Life Point become 0.

YT Tip: 1. Assemble “Exodia” Plays To have all 5 pieces of Exodia in your hand A. There are 3 “Witch of The Black Forest” and 3 “Sangan” in this deck. Those 2 Monster Effects are similar. Those Effects are known as Search Effect. Example: By using the Search Effect, you could search a Monster card from your deck. Put that card in your hand. So, use the 6 available Search Effect to search for all 5 pieces of Exodia from your deck. B. Using the “Painful Choice” in your plays Ia. You may search up to all 5 pieces of Exodia from your deck. Then, 1 of the 5 cards will be put in your hand. Ib. After you used “Painful Choice”, you will have 4 Monster cards in your Graveyard. IIa. By using the “Painful Choice”, speed up your processes to use the “Backup Soldier”. Example: You need 5 Monster cards in your Graveyard to use “Backup Soldier”.. After you used “Painful Choice”, you will have 4 Monster cards in your Graveyard. This mean you only need 1 more Monster card in your Graveyard. IIb. If you use “Painful Choice” and “Backup Soldier” as a combination (Combo), then that combination is equivalent to searching for 3 or 4 pieces of Exodia from your deck. Example of searching for 4 pieces of Exodia: You have use “Painful Choice” to search for all 5 pieces of Exodia from yourdeck. 1 out of the 5 cards will be put in your hand. Then, use “Backup Soldier” to retrieve 3 out of the 4 remaining cards from your Graveyard to your hand. III. Use “A Cat of Ill Omen” to search for “Backup Soldier” from your deck. Put that card on top of your deck. If “Necrovallley” is on the Field, then put that card in your hand.

2. “Waboku” Plays Any damage inflicted by an opponent’s monster is decreased to 0 during the turn this card is activated. A. Use “Waboku” as backup plays among your plays such as emergency and/or last resort. Because after activation, the “Waboku” effect last for an entire turn. Example: Your opponent destroyed all your cards that you have on your side of the Field. He or she going for the win. Activate “Waboku” at the same time as it is being destroyed. Even though “Waboku” is destroyed, but the Effect last for an entire turn. B. Use “A Cat of Ill Omen” to search for “Waboku” from your deck. Put that card on top of your deck. If “Necrovallley” is on the Field, then put that card in your hand. C. Your opponent destroyed “Waboku” you have set in your Field does not mean that “Waboku” Effect is negated. The same with your opponent returned “Waboku” to your hand. Example: Your opponent could use “Heavy Storm”, “Harpie’s Feather Duster”, “Mystic Space Typhoon”, “Dust Tornado”, and etc. to destroy the “Waboku” you have set on your Field. But, those cards effects does not negate “Waboku” Effect. The same with if your opponent use “Giant Trunade” and “Tornado Bird” to return “Waboku” you have set on your Field to your hand.
