Attention-Grabbers and Cacophany
The October sun is setting at UC Berkeley’s Greek Theater, and the amphitheater is buzzing in anticipation. Hordes of young women in synthetic flower crowns and Dr. Martens pack the floor, pushing and shoving towards the stage. As the sun sets, Lana Del Rey gracefully steps out under pink spotlights. The woman I had idolized since my preteen years was no longer just an image on a screen but was now twenty feet in front of me. She looked angelic in her peasant blouse and skinny jeans. I didn’t know how lucky I was to be there— she would go on hiatus after this tour. Soon she swung over the audience on a flowery swing, holding the microphone out to the adulating masses, smiling as we shouted the lyrics to Video Games.

Taylor Swift has been on the lips and cell phone screens of every American for the last year. Recently her jet-setting, carbon-emitting ways brought her 9,000 miles from Tokyo to Las Vegas to support her boyfriend, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce in the Super Bowl. The two were photographed kissing after the Chiefs’ victory. Their intimate moment, surrounded by an army of cameramen, deeply immersed in the crowd, is the 2024 equivalent to Eisenstaedt’s V-J Day in Times Square. I’m not sure privacy exists anymore.

Deep in the woods, off the Washington coast, the Hoh Rainforest resides inside Olympic National Park. The rain from omnipresent rainstorms trickles down through the Douglas Firs, Western Hemlocks, Sitka Spruces, and Western Red Cedars, like gentle wet sequins, and tickle your nose saturating your clothes. The Hall of Mosses trail isn’t even a mile long, yet its gently inclined mossy loop seems to exist beyond any measures of time and space. Lush canopies and old growth swaddle you into a safe, green embrace, surrounded by undergrowth and banana slugs. The only reminder of the outside world is a plastic placard of Mary Oliver’s When I am Among the Trees staked into the mushy ground. In stillness, on the overgrown forest floor, life buzzes around you in shades of green.

The shooting at the sports bar had everybody shaken up. Every body hit the deck. Let the bodies hit the floor! Drop it like it’s hot! 25 shots fired at 1 AM through the outdoor patio at Jackie’s in Southeast Portland, zero deaths and zero injuries. That should have been the news headline. Is it not snappy enough? Would carnage have made it newsworthy? There was no evidence in the news. Nothing but a Reddit thread asking if any neighbors heard the shots fired. Fifty bodies huddled on the sticky ground, circling the silent DJ booth, debating whether to call their loved ones. But no one died, so it clearly doesn’t matter. Are foliage half walls bulletproof? Where did the security go? Portland isn’t known for its clubbing scene, so why the fuck did I go to the bar?

This year’s Milan Fashion Week was littered with banana peels, candy wrappers, whole eggs, and soda cans on the AVAVAV catwalk. The designer planted haters in the audience—actors armed with artillery loaded with garbage. Models stumbled and fell, slipping and sliding on the trashy runway laid out before them. The designer made a statement on hate and the fashion industry as her runway show descended into filthy chaos. Hateful Instagram comments passively scrolled by on large screens, overwhelming the audience with grimy, hateful text and imagery. The hate was real, but the medieval tomato-throwing was staged. Spectacle and staged anarchy will always be on-trend.

There’s an urban legend in California that it’s a legal offense to pick a wild, California poppy. The rich orange blooms pop sporadically in road medians and sidewalk cracks, teasing and begging to be picked. Pavement, condominiums, parking garages and urban development in the 20th century killed the abundance of orange that once painted hills with a lush brush and covered meadows with a blanket of wild grasses. Californians are more likely to see a poppy on a postcard than dancing in a dense patch. California is a temperamental muse. She’s plagued with earthquakes, fires, droughts, and the mystique of the Santa Ana Winds, but she’s also blessed with wildflower season and superblooms. The long dormant Arroyo Lupines, Canterbury Bells, Desert Primroses, and California Poppies reemerge, carpeting the rolling hills. The wild poppies reenter the scene, welcoming the spring, and tempting kids to pluck their ripe flowerettes.

There were a lot of things that Dima found confusing about the United States. He didn’t understand why cell phone bills cost as much money as they did. He didn’t understand why there were that many ingredients in Nutella. He didn’t understand why the Americans around him treated vodka like it’s some miracle drug, or why none of them knew the difference between pierogi or pelmeni. He didn’t, absolutely did not, understand why tins of tuna said they were “chicken of the sea” when they were actually fish.
The one thing he did understand was hockey.
And with hockey, the whole reason he lived in the strange, brightly lit den of desert iniquity that is Las Vegas, he understood Kent Parson.
Dima didn’t understand the United States and probably never would - which he decided mere moments after he first landed in the US after a long, long flight from the Kiev airport - but it didn’t take him long to understand Parse. They started on the Aces the same year, though Dima was a few years older, but Parse was graceful on the ice in a way that Dima never could be; Parse was poetry in motion; Parse was sex on skates.
Dima liked the fact that Parse tried, that he asked whether Dima spoke Ukrainian or Russian - that he knew there was a difference - and he liked the fact that Parse made an effort at speaking Ukrushian that Dima and the Russian players on the team could all understand. He liked the way Parse said “Dimitri” and then later “Scraps” and then, sometimes, quietly, “Dima.”
He liked that Parse only ever said “Dima” quietly, softly, when other people couldn’t hear. When they were watching a movie together in the apartment they shared their joint first year, or when they were bunking together on roadies. He liked that Parse picked it up after they skyped with Dima’s mom who was in their dacha east of the city, in the kitchen making shashlik, and the way he tried to be formal with is “Dobry den” even though all he usually spoke was curse words.
Dima liked all of those things when he first started on the Aces, and first moved to Las Vegas, and he understood hockey and Kent Parson, right up until the first moment they were alone together after they won their first Stanley Cup. And in the dark of their apartment, a day and a half after their cup win, with the Vegas heat pressing in through their windows, and the blackness of the hour just before dawn smothering all thoughts and common sense, with Parse’s small, lithe frame pressed against his much larger, more scarred, blunter body, and his mouth, so hot, and soft, and wet against Dima’s own, Dima realised he didn’t understand Kent Parson.
“What are you doing?” Dima had asked, putting his hands on Parse’s shoulders and pushing him away.
“I thought--” Parse had said, and his eyes had cycled through a series of emotions: fear, shame, disappointment, resignation.
“No?” Dima had replied, because he did understand Parse, he had realised again, and he understood him to be the right amount braver than Dima was himself.
“Fuck, sorry,” Parse had said, but of the emotions Dima had seen in his eyes, apology had not been one of them.
And it had gone away. It had all gone away, and it had stayed away until their second cup. And maybe Parse was confused when Dima hadn’t asked him to find his own place, and hadn’t protested Parse’s captaincy, and hadn’t told anyone. But Dima understood hockey, and he knew Parse was best for their hockey.
At their first moment alone together after their second cup, it was Dima, in the bright morning light of their apartment, after they had peeled themselves off the Strip, with Kit Purrson winding around their ankles and the taste of champagne still on their tongues and the carbonated bubbles still popping inside their cheeks, who kissed Parse this time. It was Dima who thanked him for good games, good hockey, that thing which they both understood so much better than anything else, especially human hearts, and it was Dima who cupped Parse’s face in his own, oversized hands and aligned their lips for the best coverage. For the best coverage, and the most electricity running up and down both their spines, half from taking the cup a second time, half from doing what they ought to have done two years earlier and had started abortively but properly this time. Dima understood that at least: he understood kissing.
And he understood the sleepy soft smile on Parse’s face the next morning when he woke with Parse’s cheek pressed against his chest.
And he understood Parse well enough to read the look in his eye when pictures and videos and twitters - tweeters - whatever they were called - of Jack Zimmermann kissing a small blond man on centre ice in the wake of his own Stanley Cup victory turned up all over their phones.
He understood Parse well enough to know that as soon as they got home - the bachelors who’d never found reason to get their own places as far as the rest of their team was concerned - the first words out of Parse’s mouth would be, “I wasn’t supposed to go first in the draft, but I was supposed to be first at this.”
#I have to go to sleep i said to all my friends#it's quarter past one am i said to all my friends#literally fuck you said my brain and made me write about Dimitri Chicken-fish Scraps Zelenko and his boyfriend Kent Parson#parse#the ghost ship scribbles#why am I this way

What condo amenities do today’s buyers desire most?
http://ift.tt/2v7mLFT
When shopping for a condo, you have the delightful task of reading lists upon lists of available amenities — and then figuring out the difference between which ones are desirable, which ones are necessary and which ones the seller is offering that you weren’t even looking for in the first place (is that rooftop helipad really necessary?).
It’s fun to daydream about fantasy amenities (coffee delivered to your bedside every morning would be a great one), but what features and benefits do people really want when they get serious about buying a new condo?
Looking at recent experiences and reports, it’s easy see which amenities and features truly draw buyers in. Here are a few that stand out as the biggest and brightest in the eyes of a condo buyer:
The high life: Rooftop recreation features
Condo buyers far prefer high-rise buildings to those with only a few floors — this was one of the top three desirable features for condo sales in 2014. It’s hard to deny the draw of the skyscraper life, especially in vibrant locations where condo units offer stunning views of the surrounding city.
Living in a high-rise building also increases the likelihood of more amenities featured in the building itself that provide added convenience for residents.
A high-rise condo building becomes even more attractive when it makes good use of the rooftop. Residents love attractive common areas, providing the ability to enjoy views from a rooftop terrace, garden or lounge.
6 ways empowered agents embrace disruption to drive success
Using technology to generate leads and win listings READ MORE
Many rooftops now feature swimming pools, grills (or outdoor kitchens), banquet tables, fire pits, private cabanas and more — creating more allure for residents seeking to wine and dine guests.

Some buildings even feature multiple rooftop recreation areas that may be reserved for private parties.
Whether on the roof or not, rooms that can be reserved for private events are in demand, especially when upscale catering is available. Some condo buildings increase appeal by organizing social events and entertainment such as lounge parties, wine tastings or other gatherings.
The green life: Environmentally friendly features
Green living is increasingly a priority, as condo buyers keep their eyes peeled for the Energy Star certification marking energy-efficient appliances in addition to low-flow water fixtures and LED light bulbs.
Eco-friendly appliances and lights make a positive impact on the environment, and the reduction in energy usage saves money for residents on utility bills. Homebuyers know that investing in sustainability means saving in the long run by keeping ongoing costs low and consistent.
Many buyers are looking even past the in-home features for proof of environmentally responsible materials used in construction and decoration of condo units.
This includes the use of low volatile organic compound paints, carbon monoxide sensors (particularly within parking garages), windows designed to minimize heat loss and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems.
Condo buildings that show ongoing efforts to reduce water and energy usage are extremely appealing to buyers, who like to know that they’re contributing to a larger goal of helping the planet.
The luxury life: Fitness and spa facilities
Condo buyers are looking for features that enhance their lifestyles and support health and wellness. One of the major benefits of owning a condo over a house is that it offers a more convenient lifestyle.
High-end health clubs and fitness studios rank among the most popular luxury amenities for condo buildings. Residents enjoy the convenience of not having to pay separate gym fees or travel far from home to enjoy a healthy and relaxing lifestyle.
These facilities may include yoga and other exercise classes, gym equipment, indoor racquetball or basketball courts, steam rooms or saunas and hot tubs.

Luxurious spa services also may be offered, such as massages, facials, nail care and more.
Current trends show that finding the right home is about more than just the floorplan and appliances — buyers are looking for facilities right outside their doors that make their lives easier and give them heightened wellbeing.
The family life: Features for children
If condo buyers have children, or plan to have them in the future, they will be looking for amenities that serve those younger residents as well.
Condo buildings can provide a family-friendly appeal by offering onsite daycare facilities, play areas for children that offer interactive games and community opportunities for enriching group activities.
Condo buildings also find success in hosting events tailored for children, such as featuring a professional storyteller reading aloud or a child-friendly music group.
When it comes to parents, proximity to good schools is another very attractive feature for buyers.
The captivating life: Location always matters most
A condo building may include a variety of services and shops within it — but condo buyers also love living in a location near shopping and attractions.
Desirable condos capture not only the amenities and features a buyer wants in the home but also the atmosphere and personality the buyer wants in an ideal lifestyle.
For some buyers, this means the height of excitement in a bustling city. It’s no wonder high-rise condos on the Las Vegas strip are on the upswing. The tremendous array of restaurants, theaters, clubs, performance venues, parks and more provide appeal for the adventure-seeker and the luxury-lover.
Wikimedia
It’s difficult to get bored in a big city, and Las Vegas may be the epitome of alleviating boredom or restlessness. Easy access to family-friendly destinations is an especially appealing feature for buyers with children.
Even for buyers who find the hustle of city life a bit overwhelming, condo buildings in convenient locations (relatively close to entertainment venues and other sources of activity) are extremely sought-after.
As the trends for desirable amenities slide up and down throughout the years, location is at the top spot for hottest condo features, and it won’t be giving up its title anytime soon.

8 Sights to See at Red Rock Canyon
Need a break from the busy Strip?
Located only 17 short miles from the Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Sin City. It’s also perfect for families who want to add a little extra adventure to their Southwest vacation.
The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is open to the public year-round and welcomes over one million visitors every year. The 197,000 acre recreation area houses more than 30 miles of hiking trails, as well as rock climbing, picnic areas, a visitor’s centre, a spectacular 13 mile scenic drive, and over 10,000 years of human history.
If that’s not enough to convince you to visit Red Rock Canyon while you’re in Las Vegas, let’s take a closer look at Red Rock Canyon’s unique geology, as well as 8 impressive sights and spots to explore when you visit:
Red Rock Canyon Geology
One of the most stunning sights at Red Rock Canyon is – you guessed it – the red rocks. After all, it’s called “Red Rock Canyon” for a reason!
The Canyon was named after its characteristic sandstone formations, some of which reach 3,000 feet tall. They’re such a bright red because of the iron oxide, or hematite, in the sandstone. Exposure to the elements, like wind and rain, causes this sediment to rust, resulting in the bright red rocks we see today.
The eponymous formations were formed by multiple geological forces, including fracture faults where the earth’s crust collided, erosion, and fossilization. Before the red cliffs were formed, the area was actually covered in a vast desert. The desert’s sand dunes were then lithified (the process of compressing unconsolidated sediment into sedimentary rock) to create today’s Aztec sandstone formations.
These forces created the breathtaking formations we get to experience today. Here are some of the most iconic:
1. Keystone Thrust Fault
A “thrust fault” is a fracture in the earth’s crust. These faults result from compressional forces driving one crustal plate up over another.
The Keystone Thrust Fault formed about 65 million years ago when the oceanic plate began subducting (or moving beneath) the western edge of the North American plate. This caused the older limestone to be thrust eastwards over the younger sandstone. That’s why you’ll see gray rocks on top of red sandstone – the older limestone doesn’t contain the iron oxide that creates the red hue.
The Keystone Thrust fault stretches up the west coast all the way to Canada, but it’s most visible at Red Rock Canyon. If you look to the west, you can’t miss it.
2. Mount Wilson
Reaching 7,068 feet into the air, Mount Wilson is the highest sandstone peak among the bluffs of the Spring Mountains, and you can get a great view of this impressive peak from Red Rock Canyon.
Its sheer face may seem unclimbable, but Mount Wilson is a popular trek for climbers. Its trails can be difficult to follow, but there are a number of easy trails available to novice climbers. Make sure you do your research before you plan a hike up Mount Wilson.
3. Calico Hills
These distinct crimson hills began as red sand dunes over 180 million years ago. Over time, underground water carried away most of the original color, leaving behind calcium carbonate to cement the sand dunes. These dunes were then compressed and lithified under the weight of overlaying deposits that have now eroded away. Geology rocks!
4. Scenic Loop
The 13 mile scenic loop is the cornerstone of Red Rock Canyon. This paved, one-way road travels right through Red Rock Canyon, offering many places to safely pull over and snap photos, have a picnic, or explore a hiking trail.
As you leave the visitor center, the loop will take you into the Calico Hills and passed many more scenic viewpoints, including Ice Box Canyon.
All of our guided tours of Red Rock Canyon include a trip around the scenic loop. Check out these tour options:

5. Ice Box Canyon
Ice Box Canyon is the perfect spot to explore on a hot day. This canyon rarely sees sunlight, and the cool water and air from the mountains helps keep it significantly cooler than the surrounding desert. It takes about an hour walk through the open desert to reach, but when you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with views of a cool, shady box canyon complete with seasonal waterfalls.
Keep your eyes on the upper canyon – bighorn sheep like to hang out near the large pools of water that collect there for most of the year.
6. Lost Creek
This seasonal desert waterfall is easily reachable along a short 0.35 mile hiking trail. If you’re travelling with kids, check out the Lost Creek Children’s Discovery Loop and explore the surrounding rock formations as well, as well as check out some cool pictographs.
7. The Visitor Center
No trip to Red Rock Canyon is complete without a stop at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center. The Center is divided into four parts: earth, air, fire, and water. In each section, you can read about the history, geography, and plant and animal life of the Canyon. There are also interactive stations featuring information on local wildlife. Did you know that resident squirrels use their fluffy tails to cool off when it gets hot out?
If you’re lucky, you’ll also catch a glimpse of Red Rock Canyon’s “spokes-tortoise”, Mojave Max. If you don’t get a chance to see Mojave Max, there are seven female tortoises in a habitat just outside the visitor center.
8. Desert Wildlife
In addition to its spectacular rock formations and scenic vistas, Red Rock Canyon is home to over 200 species of mammals. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready to spot burros, rabbits, coyotes, bighorn sheep, red tailed hawks, and golden horses!
