Is spider silk being as strong as steel another lie from childhood? Bc you're able to break it pretty easily on accident. Genuinely asking.

spider silk IS actually significantly stronger pound-for-pound than the same amount of steel, but only in one direction! and coincidentally, it's the same exact direction that got a bunch of people killed in a submersible last month.

see, when people talk about the "strength" of spider silk versus steel, they're specifically talking about tensile strength:

which is specifically the measure of the strength of a material when two forces are pulling at it from the ends, like when a steel cable is holding up a bridge support, or crane cargo:

or like when a strand of silk is supporting the entire spider.

that's tensile strength, baby!

but there's another type of strength that's very important to take into consideration when you're actually building things like bridges and submersibles, and spider silk and similar materials like carbon fiber are absolutely garbage at it! and that's compressive strength.

this is basically the inverse of tensile strength, where instead of being yanked at from both ends, the forces are crushing inwards at the material from both directions instead.

you can expect to see these kinds of forces involved in road surfaces, vehicle engines, and again, submersibles.

now steel and its more competent cousin titanium are fucking GREAT at compressive strength! the harder the outside forces are compressing them, the stronger the metals get.

NOT TODAY, FUCKERS

but strand-based materials like spider silk and, again, carbon fiber, are fucking garbage at this. they can take a certain amount of pressure, but each round with compressive forces snaps some of the strands that makes up the material! and those don't grow back, so basically you're just gradually reducing your poor overstressed carbon-fiber hull into a completely useless shell of shattered thread fragments over time as the strands of fiber that actually give it strength die off one by one.

and eventually, something's gotta give! and then people die about it.

this is why, even though spider silk IS stronger than steel in one specific way, we're never going to stop using steel in industrial applications and switch over to spider silk or carbon fiber full time. these materials all have their areas of use, and steel just covers a wider base of applications.

and don't even get me started on shear strength. we'll be here all damn day.

"Now my phone's dead too." Lando scoffed throwing his phone on the leather seat. He's been standing at the side of the blue carbon covered £380,00+ car for the past 20 minutes. He was in the middle of utterly no where, with no cars passing by ( the people that did stop, happen to not speak English nor Flemish Dutch for that matter yes lando tried speaking dutch to italians ).

What a lucky day.

And it was about to get a lot luckier when another car passing by stopped after Norris waved over. "I need help, with the car." He tried saying slowly, switching to Dutch to try his chances.

"I can . . . I can help push it? to uh . . . car doctor?" "Yes, car doctor, that would be great. Thank you." And so after about 2 hours of hard work, the two men ( well one man, one boy lando small ) arrived at a town where several other men came and helped Lando to the mechanics shop.

"Ask kiku. Uhhh . . . Kiku help with car. Very good."

Lando made sure to thank everyone before they left, going through the door. "Un momento per favore." [one moment please]. A female voice shouted through the garage, she was laying on a skateboard rolled under a car.

"Matteo!" she shouted again startling Lando. "Matteo. Porta qui il tuo culo e aiuta quel dannato uomo." [Matteo. Get your ass over here and help the god damn man]. 'Matteo' seemed to have either passed out and taken a nap or walked out. "marcire All 'inferno . . . Cosa c'è che non va nella tua auto?" [rot in hell . . . what's wrong with your car] You asked giving up on finding your co worker.

"I'm sorry?" Lando asked again feeling nervous in this situation, making you pause your tweaking. You rolled from under the car, looking at the British driver. "There shouldn't be anything wrong with your car." You spoke in English, fluently, rolling back under and continuing with the wrench.

"You didn't even take a look at my car-" He was stuttering. Lando was surprised and shocked. It's not everyday you run into a hot Italian women, that can fix cars and speaks English like she's from Chicago or Milton.

"What did you do to it. Were you racing with it? Drifting? Rallying? Or did you completely destroyed it, cause I don't have any carbon fiber or fancy doors and steering wheels."

"No." He replied to all of your questions. "Then it's fine. There's a gas station two roads south from here-" "You don't even know what the model of the car is." He argued, not believing you.

"You're Lando Norris, aren't you? its a 765LT Spider, McLaren." You answered with no hesitation, making the boy zip his mouth. "What do you want, Mr. Norris?" You asked again getting annoyed.

"I was told to look for, uh, Kiku was it?" He said unsurely. You sighed, grumbling a few Italian cuss words under your breath as you finished your current task. Rolling out, you stood up, lifting your tank top and wiping your face dry from the sweat, which in turn smudged some grease on your face.

Fuck not being attracted to Italian female mechanics, you were hot. Very attractive in Lando's eyes.

"I'm Kiku." You told him, handing him the greasy wrench. It was a stupid nickname a few friends gave you as a joke, and it stuck. You looked out at his car hand on your hip as you examined it. "Can you turn it on?" You asked as you approached it, ready to open the back trunk and check the engine.

Lando looked grossed out at the wrench, setting it on a random surface as he unlocked the truck. You examined the car for the next 15 minutes. "I can give it back tomorrow. It's not a big problem. Like I said, you're just out of gas."

"But the measure doesn't say that. And If it's just out of gas, shouldn't you be able to give it back today?" "Yeah. That's the problem, your fuel sender is lying to you and I have to change it." You patted his back, moving back into your garage.

"But I can't stay here forever." "What's wrong with this place?" You asked frowning, looking him in the eye. Lando was going to open his mouth before he closed it quickly. "Nothing I just don't-" why was he rushing? He didn't have places to be at the moment. ". . . I don't have a place to stay?" He answered, more like asked from how unsure of himself he was.

You looked at him for a few seconds. "You can wait over there, just don't touch anything." You told him sighing, nodding towards a few chairs near your office.

"I'm not getting in." Lando refused, looking at your green car. Well it wasn't any green car. It was a classic, a Ferrari 250 gte. Highlight Ferrari. "Yeah, I'm definitely not getting it."

"Suit yourself, the coyotes here would not pass on eating you alive." You joked, not even sure if there were coyotes. "It's not everyday you get to eat a formula one driver, especially a British McLaren driver named Norris." Yea that statement did it for Lando, quickly getting in the car and closing the door after him.

"Good boy." You humed, not really thinking about it as you pulled out the driveway and made your way home. Lando could feel his face redden, hearing your praise, crossing his arms and huffing.

When you arrived at your house, the McLaren diver was quick to jump out first. "Think fast." Lando turned around, quickly catching the keys you tossed. He dropped them once he saw the yellow and black logo with a yelp.

You were laughing at him, moving to his side and picking up the keys, moving towards the house. "casa mia è casa tua." you told him as soon as you unlocked the door. Landor entered after you, copying you as you took your shoes off. The first thing the British driver felt was warmth, your space was giving him solace. This place felt like home.

"You can look around, I'm not going to take long in the shower." You set your bag down on the floor near the couch, making your way to the bathroom. Land did look around, he felt curious. You clearly knew him but he knew so little about you. While scouting for information he found your collection of music discs.

When finally came out fresh, Lando was quick to ask you about a few pictures he found. You two were quickly becoming close with one another. Sharing stories and jokes.

"What about this one?" Lando pointed to one on the grand piano. "Oh yea, I can totally see the picture, Mr. Norris." You chuckled. You were busy with your hands, making dinner for both of you ( you usually ordered out but it world be rude to do that with a guest around so you were putting your heart out in the spaghetti you wee making from scratch, something you knew would impress the McLaren driver ).

Lando picked up the photo frame walking over to you. "Why do you keep calling me by my last name? I have a first name, or did you forget." He chuckled looking at you. "Cause your first name sounds like London." You teased joking. It was out of respect, you did not want to get on his bad side, and it did sound like London just a bit.

Lando smiled laughing. "Well, I'd rather you call me by my first name." "Of course, Mr. Norris." You teased, leaning your forearms on the counter, flicking some flower on his face. He only held up the photo in return. "Oh, I remember this." You hummed, wiping your hand in a towel, taking the photo.

"It was before the last race for the European karting championship. I think I was . . . eleven in that picture?" Lando moved beside you looking down at it. You were in your kart, with your helmet on holding a thumbs up.

You took a moment looking at the photo, your father was sitting beside you on the floor, delivering the kart it's last few tweaks before the race. "You karted?" Lando asked, ruining the moment.

"No." You sarcastically replied, pushing the picture on his chest. "I flew planes at the age of two." You rolled your eyes. "Did you win?" "Hell yeah, I did. Do I look like some weak ass sissy?" You replied laughing. "That championship was mine. I Literally beat up Albon and Leclerc. "

"Really?" He was interested, leaning forward to listen closely. "What else did you race in?" "Just that really." You shrugged smiling. "Other than the karting track a few blocks down." "There's a karting track a few blocks down?" You looked at him blinking quietly. "I think answered your question before you answered it."

The boy looked away chuckling nervously. "Right." "I can drop you off tomorrow morning while I fix your car." You offered as you gently cooked the chicken alfredo. "Really?" You looked back at him deadpanning. "I mean, I'd enjoy that. Thank you."

After finally fixing the lying fuel measure, you drove the McLaren to the karting track, honking the horn to get the attention of the race car driver.

Turning back from the fence, Lando smiled upon seeing you lean on the blue carbon in the car park. "You fixed her!" "Of course I did." You chuckled, tossing him his keys once he was close enough. "You're free to go Mr. Norris." You chuckled getting off the McLaren and patting his back. "I don't need to leave just yet . . . by the way do you have plans next week?" "Why what are you up to."

hey everybody, i've put together a digest/summary of an article Mat Oxley published in Roadracing World back in January. i have notes on everything each manufacturer has been working on in the off-season, though the article doesn't cover the qatar and sepang tests.

ktm's carbon fiber chassis:

save weight

save large amounts of production time, allowing for more experimentation

stiffness is easier to measure and experiment

miller testified that the grip is better (though binder disagrees), and more power would complement the build

ktm's carbon fiber swingarm is "almost indestructible compared to the aluminium swingarm we used before!", says technical manager Sebastian Risse. the article notes that the manufacturer is also set apart from other factories because of its commitment to make and use bespoke parts, with its own suspension system instead of one modeled on Öhlins parts.

aprilia's aero improvements:

follow a similar model to ducati, using ground-effect devices to generate grip at high lean angles. the wheel covers and swingarm-mounted ducts essentially create a downward suction while the bike is pitched over, reducing sideforce and improving grip.

the gas tank is under the seat for some reason?

braking still needs work though -- the RS-GP has come far in the last 2 years, but struggles more at stop-and-go tracks and favors sweeping, curvy ones. chief engineer Romano Albesiano does note that the bike performed well at Spielberg last year, meaning the braking has been improving, but still has a long way to go. "the way the ducati slows down is unbelievable. we cannot stop like that, even though we use bigger discs. i don't know if ducatis stop by using aero or what..."

honda:

mir says he's "very happy". okay.

he says that front grip has finally improved and that the longer bike allows for more feeling.

the bike is lighter and functions well on used tires

yamaha:

since the engine is an inline 4 and not a v4, it delivers power differently, and often worse.

less power = less aerodynamic downforce = more wheelies = more drag = even less acceleration

the new aero gives less wheelie and new engine produces higher top speed

top speed isn't at all enough to bring the team to the front, but mathematically, yamaha was able to produce higher speeds than any other team during testing. now what they need is to improve rear grip and power delivery; the latter of which will likely require switching to a v4.

ducati:

secret weapon isn't power or top speed, it's traction. the bike is better than any other on corner exit because it can generate so much grip

aero is obviously part of the magic, so the new bodywork design may explain the improvements

pecco asked for more maneuverability

2022 bike was better on entry but would shake on exit, 2023 is the opposite. pecco wants best of both worlds

ducati has a reputation of just winning based off pure power, but that's obviously not the whole story. all these bikes are powerful, but delivery and traction are really the name of the game. hopefully the new concessions rules will allow other teams to try and work up to ducati's level, likely by testing insane new aero as much as possible.

Maserati MC20 Cielo 

Cielo means “sky” in Italian, and we knew the MC20 Spyder was imminent the moment the company rebooted itself by launching the coupé. What we couldn’t foresee is Maserati’s plan to help supercar drivers get rid of their unfortunate hat choices by introducing a folding hardtop with Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal technology, the more advanced smart glass Mercedes and McLaren customers could only dream of under their less sufficient SPD glass roofs. What’s more, Maserati says the full-electric version of the MC20, the upcoming Folgore will also come first as a Cielo Spyder.

There are two active glass solutions in the luxury automotive segment. The suspended particle roof from automotive supplier Gauzy is transparent when not under power, and can only go from a light 30 percent tint to “a nearly opaque” 95-percent tint. The Maserati glass roof developed by Webasto, however, is fully opaque when the car is parked, going fully transparent if you wish. What’s more, it offers 96-percent ray reflection due to a filter layer at the bottom, alongside better thermal and noise isolation. In practice, it looks something like this from the passenger seat:Operating at speeds up to 31 mph, this 12-second folding roof represents a 143-pound weight penalty over the coupé, not bad at all. The carbon fiber monocoque is layered and foamed differently to maintain a high torsional rigidity, which is also aided by the one-piece aluminum frame of the roof mechanism, bolted in between the monocoque and the rear shock towers. Sixty percent of the spyder’s 3,395 pounds is on the rear axle, which now uses a milder differential ratio as well.The chassis settings, power curves and performance figures remain unchanged. The slightly higher rear section brought a minimal increase in drag, while the springs are a touch stiffer to compensate for the extra weight, aided by more rebound. Being the lifestyle choice, the MC20 Cielo Spyder isn’t here to break track records, yet will still reach 62mph in 3.0 seconds, and keep going until the 200 mph mark.

A popular design feature of the hardtop MC20 happens to be its rear screen with the trident-shaped cutouts that aid cooling of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6. With that piece being replaced by the roof holder and its cover, design chief Klaus Busse and his team went for new boomerang-shaped outlets cut into the side fenders, while engineering came up with deflectors that channel clean air to the intercooler through the equally discreet additional air intakes. Busse explained that while his design team insisted on retaining the MC20’s sleek roofline and clean side profile, engineering got every chance to use the bottom half of the car, finished in carbon fiber instead of body color to optimize aerodynamics, resulting in the retained downforce levels and low drag despite the raised rear panel.

Optionally, for those who miss the rear screen, Maserati is offering a large titan finish Trident logo sticker on the roof cover panel, which screams MASERATI at everybody driving behind when the roof is raised or dropped. It's also something of a visual trick to hide the cover’s extra volume.

On the power side of the equation, they combined a Halltech Systems Hornet cold air intake, CNC ported throttle body, Late Model Engines CNC LT2 cylinder heads, Jet-Hot coated Fabspeed HK long-tube headers & high-flow catalytic converters, and FabSpeed HK catback exhaust to add 50HP. The Supermono was one of the most innovative racing motorcycles ever produced when it was built in the early 1990s for the well-known Sound of Singles racing series. They have grown to be some of the most sought-after Ducatis with only 67 ever being built. The Supermono, with the single-cylinder engine, acquired the balance of a V-Twin by combining the horizontal front cylinder from the 888 Corsa with a counterbalancing second connecting rod. Large inlet and exhaust valves, 50mm throttle bodies, and twin fuel injectors were some of the additional characteristics carried over from the racing V-Twin. The bike's aluminum swingarm was directly attached to the crankcase and gearbox casting, and the steel-tube frame was constructed in accordance with Ducati's well-known trellis pattern. With the exception of the engine side covers, top yoke, and wheels, which were made of magnesium, carbon fiber was used extensively, resulting in a dry weight under 121 kg.

I have a lot of feelings about the Titan sub extravaganza and since tumblr is just shouting into a vaccume I think I'll share them below the cut if anyone wants to read lol.

1st: I knew they were dead the moment they said they were missing. Like Cameron said in interviews there's literally no way for them to completely lose contact without having no power AT ALL, and if you have no power in situations like that, your craft is gone and you're dead. It was genuinely the best thing that could have happened to them, coming up too fast as they were trying to do also probably would have killed them but in a much more horrible way, and granted you can survive bad cases of the bends (sometimes) but if you don't it's a really really horrible way to go. But also so is suffocating and hypothermia which was the case if they'd been stuck in there for days as the rescue team led you to believe is also a really horrible way to go. If I had to die catastrophically, honestly that's how I'd want to do it, you can't even feel pain or understand it.

2nd: I think it is sad, because I don't think people "deserve" to die, (particularly the 19 yo who most likely didn't want to be there/claimed he didn't want to be there) and they were probably afraid in their last moments because they heard the hull creaking and that's sad, but I also think it's ironic because you are taking a TOURISM trip to an EXTREMELY deep part of the ocean that is home to a MASS GRAVE. And they paid 250k to do it and weren't smart enough to check whether or not the sub they were in was a death trap (idk about you but I personally would be checking that 10 times over. I'm going into a highly highly pressurized space with no logical safety precautions? I'll pass). So they maybe kinda got what was coming to them, and eat the rich and all that, maybe don't voyer a mass grave.

3rd: I think the depth of the Titanic is the universes way of deterring people from going there, like we have museums that practically put you on the ship and give activities that simulate the sinking, you don't need to see the real thing. 100s of people died there tragically and suffered, let them rest. There is no good reason why civilians should be visiting the Titanic, not a single one, regardless of how much money you have.

4th: I was waiting 3 days for Cameron to comment on it, and I'm glad he did cause honestly I trust his expertise in this area maybe more than a single other person on the planet, and it's not cause I'm his fan, he's genuinely the most educated individual. I've had a passion/interest in ocean exploration since I was 11 so while I'm no expert, I do know that you can't make a sub out of carbon fiber and not die. I've also have been a fan of Cameron's exploration work in the challenger deep for over a decade by extension. 5th: the media coverage of this was completely unnecessary and the rescue attempts were also unnecessary since everyone in the field knew they were dead, anyone with an engineering degree knew they were dead, anyone with common sense and the ability to do good research knew they were dead. The rescue was all for show and a waste of resources. I think it's horrrific what happened off the cost of Greece and I think the media SHOULD have covered that instead but I don't like hearing the comparison of "we should have sent our resources there" as there's a fairly large logistical difference between a submersible with a 3 day expiration date and a boat with a 30 minute one. That doesn't mean that there shouldn't have been more support/recovery efforts made for the immigrants, there SHOULD HAVE but it's not comparable in anything except media response and that it's in/on the ocean. I also think it's okay to care about both and the response to 5 billionaires dying at see can be joked about and made light of and sometimes that's good for the human condition, the death of people fleeing death and then tragically dying, cannot but it doesn't mean people don't/won't care, it just means they're not loud about it.
