I thought to myself, "When did Willow Run ever have this kind of passenger service?"
TIL from the Willow Run Airport wikipedia page:
Between 1946 and 1947, passenger airlines serving Detroit moved from Detroit City Airport on the city's crowded east side, to Willow Run; shortly thereafter, Wayne County officials began expanding Detroit-Wayne Major Airport at Romulus, which was 10 miles (16 km) closer to Detroit than Willow Run. Willow Run's relative isolation encouraged new approaches to passenger transportation to and from airports; at Willow Run in 1946, Warren Avis founded Avis Airlines Rent a Car Systems, the first rental car operation at an airport. Almost all of Detroit's scheduled airline flights used Willow Run until 1958, when the coming of the Jet Age drove traffic to the Romulus airfield, which that year had been renamed Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (the name it still bears). It offered carriers a new terminal designed for the new aircraft, a newly expanded runway layout, and approach controls that made it the first inland airport in the country certified for jet airliners. In 1956, there were seven passenger airlines at Willow Run. The April 1957 Official Airline Guide shows 68 weekday departures on Capital, 45 on American, 23 on Eastern, 17 on Northwest Orient, 14 on United, 13 on North Central, 13 on TWA, 8 on Delta, 5 on Allegheny and 3 on Mohawk. American's only westward non-stops were to Chicago; United had a nonstop DC-7 to Los Angeles; come summer TWA would resume its weekly two-stop Constellation flight to Paris via Gander in Newfoundland and Shannon in Ireland. Only BOAC and Pan Am flew out of Detroit-Metropolitan. American Airlines moved from Willow Run to Detroit-Metropolitan in October 1958, followed by Northwest, Allegheny, and Delta in the next few months. Airline flights ended in 1966 when United, TWA, Eastern, North Central, Mohawk and Lake Central moved to Metro Airport.

You can ask your Car Rental Dublin Airport company about the insurance if you are confused and let them guide you about the whole process. You must listen to them but ensure not to follow them religiously because they might earn commission for persuading you to buy it.

This past week has been one of my favorite of the summer, mainly because I was able to share it with my family! They arrived in Laramie last Thursday evening and I quickly got to work giving them the full experience.
We started by eating at my favorite restaurant in town, the Crowbar and Grill. This restaurant had a wide range of interesting meals and, in my opinion, puts most Carbondale restaurants to shame. After this, we called it an early night and my family went to a nearby hotel to sleep before moving into Elizabeth’s house for the remainder of the week. The next morning we ate at my favorite breakfast spot before driving out to the Snowies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Snowies were the location my family needed to see first as I felt the range really embodied the beauty and splendor of the area in and around Laramie. It was a beautiful day to make the drive and I think they really enjoyed hiking around the bottom of the craggy peaks. The long drive also allowed them to see many other things that made Laramie so special, such as the pronghorns, prairie dogs, and snow fences covered with bald eagles and ravens. On this drive they were also able to see the Lindzey, Bufford, and McGee toad sites. It was great to be able to convert my written words to a physical form for them!
Tumblr media
During that evening we took in the farmers market and also had a dinner with Brent. It was great to introduce my best Wyoming friend to my family and we had a great time sharing stories of our summer in Laramie! Once we had finished, I spent the rest of the evening with Isabel, Brent and some of my other friends in Laramie playing video games until 4 in the morning.
On Saturday I slept in until 2 and woke up just in time to grab lunch with my parents. They had spent the morning perusing the downtime Laramie shops for local art and fudge. This was our laziest day and we took things pretty easy.
After another late start on Sunday I decided it was time to get my family back outside, so we headed to Veedawoo (I will never know how to spell or say this correctly) where we spent an hour hiking and climbing rocks in the park. My sister and I even found a small fat man’s squeeze that I tried to navigate, but with not much luck. Huh, maybe things aren’t too different out in Laramie!
Tumblr media
That night I spent my last evening with Brent before he departed for Iceland on a 10 day trip with his dad. Once again I cannot explain how great of a friend Brent was to me and he will always be a large part of my Wyoming stories.
Monday was the day I was most excited for because I was going to be able to give my family a good taste of what I had been doing all summer, but before I could do that I had to enter data. This did not take too long, however, and before noon Andy and I were headed to Red Buttes to attach telemetry trackers to 2 new toads that will be followed this fall. This was long and drawn out and before I knew it it was 2 o’clock. I alerted Andy of this and he allowed for myself and 2 techs from the Leadville Zoo to go meet my family and begin a toadlet release at Outrider.
Both parties found each other quickly and after bleaching our boots we were ready to release over 100 toads! Not only was it a great feeling to be able to introduce my family to this, but the techs from Leadville had also never done a release before and were visibly eager. Seeing this I wasted no time and took us to one of the best toad release sites on the property! It was a quick experience, but a fun one for all involved!
Tumblr media
I spent that evening at Lovejoy’s talking to Shannon while she tended bar. She was another great friend addition in the wild Wild West and was always fun to spend time with and talk to. I felt that she, Brent and I became a sort of motley 3. Did I mention they were both fantastic?!
Finally, Tuesday rolled around and I knew I had to begin packing up for my departure on Wednesday. Of course I did not pack at all Tuesday and instead spent the day seeing more friends, shopping, and eating at my favorite Laramie digs. It was the perfect final day.
At 9 in the morning Wednesday, Izzy and my mom took the rental car and headed for the Denver airport, while my dad and I stayed behind to finish up cleaning the house so that a new renter could move in. When this was finished we made a final shopping stop before heading out on our road trip back to Carbondale. This was not going to be a straight shot trip, however, as my dad and I planned on hitting the Black Hills and the Badlands on our return home.
By 6 on Wednesday we had reached our first stop, Mount Rushmore. I was a bit apprehensive about seeing this site as I find it to be very touristy, but once I learned the history of the man who created the monument I began to really respect what it was and what it stood for. The Black Hills that surrounded it were also incredibly beautiful and were wonderful to drive through! In my future travels I plan on visiting there again!
Tumblr media
The next day we started by entering the Badlands, which was my favorite part of this road trip (other than being able to spend time with my dad). While we were there we saw countless fossils, which of course we could not take for ourselves ;), Buffalo and even a handful of bighorn sheep. These sightings were really cool especially when paired with the sighting of a mountain goat the day before at Rushmore!
Tumblr media
Shortly after seeing the bighorn sheep we departed the badlands and began the more questionable part of our journey, our trips to Wall Drug and the Corn Palace. Back in the 30s or whenever my parents had last been through the town of Wall, the drug store was a booming tourist trap. Well things had not changed too much and tourists were still being trapped by the thousands. We used the restroom and had had our fill of the place. Next stop Corn Palace. Things can only get cooler right? Wrong! The Corn Palace was a largely brick building covered in murals made out of corn. The highlight of this stop was the popcorn and the jokes my dad and I made about the experience afterwards. It was a good laugh! Around 9 o’clock last night we arrived in Omaha and had dinner downtown before hitting the hay. We had a long day ahead of us on Friday.
Well today is that Friday and we have currently been driving for 8 hours and are now only 30 minutes away from Carbondale. My summer journey has been beyond anything I imagined and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I met incredible people and experienced no drama, which is a big upgrade from my homestead in southern Illinois. I also honed my skills as a biologist and a technician. I am now mentally stronger than I was before I left and feel more independent than ever before. At this point in life I feel like I can overcome any obstacle by using my mind and my words. Be ready Carbondale, my final year is gonna be a big one.

Guys, did I ever tell you about my Ireland Windshield Wipers Adventure?
Probably not, because if I recall, I failed to post pretty much anything about that trip, but the windshield wipers is one of the crowning achievements of my life, so you get to hear about it now.
Last August, I, Mr Butt, and his youngest sister, flitted off to Ireland for about a week.  We rented a car and drove around basically the southern half of the island.  I did all the driving and was scared the entire time because opposite side of the road and also because the western counties need to reassess what constitutes a safe speed limit on what I’m pretty sure were actually just footpaths masquerading as roads.
Anyway, the weather was quite sunny the first few days, so it wasn’t until somewhere in the middle that we discovered the windshield wipers on our rental car didn’t work.  It was only lightly raining, so we made do by pulling over every so often, so that Mr Butt could get out, manually move the wipers back and forth a few times, and hop back in the car.
No big deal, we thought, we’re getting pretty close to Shannon, we’ll just call the rental company and get a different car from the airport.  Nope.  They didn’t have any available.  Instead, they recommended we take the car to a mechanic, and they would cover the repair bill.  None of us felt much like spending one of our precious few days in Ireland waiting for our car to get fixed, so we decided to take our chances.
In Kilkenny, it started legitimately raining, and showed no signs of stopping.  Here is me excitedly taking a photo of my experience using the umbrella I had to buy:
Tumblr media
Yes, that’s right, I was excited about using an umbrella.  I don’t own one.  I couldn’t tell you the last time I used one before that.
Back to the wipers.  It was now impossible to drive.  We needed to get back to Dublin.  But, I had a plan!  I dragged us into a hardware store, and we spent maybe one whole euro on some nylon cord.  We tied one end of the cord to one wiper blade, passed it through one slightly rolled down window, out the other side, and tied the other end to the other wiper blade.  Then, the lucky person riding shotgun got to manually work the wipers by jerking them back and forth with the string, while we got slightly rained on due to the windows needing to be cracked for the string.
Video evidence of my ingenuity:
youtube
You can hear Mr Butt’s sister being thoroughly amused as she records one of the greatest moments of my entire life.  The whole ordeal is so fucking funny to me.  Shit going slightly wrong while traveling is one of the great joys in life.

Thunderbirds -- Chapter 37

Roger
I had a lot to think about on the drive back to Indiana. I had been pretty irritated with Jared's parting performance but it didn't really diminish the guilt I was feeling for treating him the way I had. It wasn't really any of my business how he chose to live his life, and I was wrong for judging him for behaving the way I had been behaving for pretty much all of mine. I decided I would wait a few days for him to calm down and then call him and apologize. I had been enjoying our friendship, I would like to at least mend fences. I knew he had no interest in actually having a relationship, I knew he was just spoiled and not used to not getting his way. I figured once the sting of it wore off he would be back to his old self. It was an easy enough fix I told myself.
Jane's situation, on the other hand, wasn't as straightforward. I waited with growing dread for Mitch's phone call. Whatever happened, we would deal with it, one way or another, but I wasn't looking forward to a big fight. It was the last thing Jane needed right now. I had made it to just outside Danville, IL when my phone began to ring. I knew that whatever news awaited me on the other side of that line I couldn't pay attention to it and drive so I pulled off the highway at the next exit, parked at a Phillips station and quickly rang Mitch back. My skin had gone clammy by the time he answered.
“Just tell me straight up, what are we dealing with,” I said as soon as he came on the line. There was a little chuckle and my anxiety levels dropped several notches.
“Jane says that Jared's the one that recommended that attack dog lawyer in Los Angeles for her, is that right?”
“Uhm, yeah?” I said, not exactly following yet.
“Well, you need to thank Jared because that guy saved our asses.”
That sounded promising at least. “What happened?”
“Well just so you know up front, everything is fine, Jane's under my custody for the time being. But she bombed that evaluation with that doctor this afternoon.”
As relieved as I was that Angus seemed to be out of the picture I was concerned about what was going on with Jane that might cause her to do so badly. “What happened, Mitch? What's wrong with Jane?”
“Don't flip out on me Roger,” Mitch said evenly. I didn't like the sound of this.
“Mitch, what the hell is going on?" I demanded. "Why was Jane so terrified this morning?”
“The doctor here thinks that she was underdiagnosed in St. Louis. It happens with brain injuries, sometimes it takes a few days to see how severe things are. He let Jane come back home with us tonight but they are discussing either readmitting her here or letting her go back to New York. Apparently, there's a really good treatment program there. But here I can watch out for her. If she goes back to New York, I can't leave Audrey and the girls to go take care of her... ”
“I'll take care of her.” I cut him off. “Whatever it takes, wherever it's best for her. Just say the word.”
“Okay, calm down. We'll what Dr. Nepp.... that's her neurologist here, Dr. Nepp," Mitch explained. "We'll see what he wants to do tomorrow. We see him again at 8:00 a.m. She's doing pretty good this afternoon. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.”
Mitch sounded so much calmer than I felt. I felt terrible for leaving. I should have put Shannon in a rental car and let him drive his own ass back to Wisconsin. I don't know why I didn't. I pressed my palm against my eye and tried to reason with myself but I wanted to scream. Jane wasn't the only one whose emotions were all over the place.
“Anyway, after the exam I was pretty nervous about the hearing. But then this whole team of attorneys shows up at the courtroom, apparently sent in by the L.A. guy. They had all this stuff on Angus and all this paperwork showing what was going on with Jane and background on me and everything. They knocked it out of the park. I have full medical power of attorney right now, and Angus isn't allowed to contact Jane, any of her family members, you or Shannon, and can't come within 1,000 feet. Probably going to cost Jane a pretty penny but I don't think she minds.”
Fuck. I was going to have to have Shannon thank Jared as soon as I called him. “That's amazing.”
“Yup, it sure is. It lets us focus on helping Jane get better and none of this other garbage. So how much longer until you get here?”
“I'm probably still about two hours out.”
“Well, that's just about right. As usual, the girls want to go out and have pizza with Aunt Jane. She's napping now but she should be up to it. Meet us at the Monical's on 41 around 6:30? Should be right on your way into town.”
“Sure thing,” I said hanging up the phone and sighing in relief. I called Shannon, but got his voice mail. I assumed they were either in sound check or playing, I couldn't remember when their set today was. I left a message letting him know what was going on and finished my drive back to Mitch's.
Jane:
“Come on, Roger, I don't' want to do any more of these today.” I closed the workbook and thrust it and my pencil back into Roger's lap. “His plane will be landing any minute now.”
“And when he disembarks we'll stop,” Roger said, holding the workbook out in front of me. “You skipped therapy today to come meet him at the airport so you're going to get your math problems done now.”
I groaned and took the book back. This was the first time I had seen Shannon since the hospital, almost two weeks ago. I didn't want to think about any stupid therapy homework, I just wanted my Shan-bear. With a scowl, I flipped back to the next page in the workbook.
My little concussion had turned out to be moderate brain injury. My forgetfulness in the day after the accident had only been the tip of the iceberg. I had become increasingly anxious and paranoid in the following days. There had been additional tests and a parade of specialists, but what it all boiled down to in the end was a diminished capacity to self-regulate my emotions, diminished short-term memory recall and, inexplicably, a loss of most of my math skills. All these things were expected to improve, and they were, but much slower than I would have liked. I went to therapy for a couple hours a day where they worked on the skills I had lost. The problem was that other than that, I wasn't allowed to do anything. I was supposed to be resting my brain so I wasn't allowed to write, or read or play board games or even watch intellectually challenging television programs. I was going stir crazy. And I missed my Shannon.
He called me after every show, and we had long phone conversations on his days off but of course, it wasn't the same as having him there with me and being wrapped up in one of his amazing hugs. He was only here visiting for two days, then he had a show in New Jersey, but they would be back in New York next week. I was so anxious for his tour to be over. I wanted some real time with him. As it was sometimes when I called he was busy and Jared ended up picking up the phone. That wasn't too bad, at least I got to have some nice chats with Jared too. After all the misunderstandings it was good to repair that friendship. But it wasn't helping my Shannon withdrawals and since I was emotionally all over the place these days it was affecting me more than it should have.
I tapped my pencil against the page with a sigh. Shannon's flight should have landed already. I tried not to let my imagination run away with me, I flew enough to know that arrival and departure times were in reality mostly suggestions. But it was incredibly frustrating. When his flight finally landed I shoved the workbook and pencil back at Roger and jumped out of my seat.
“Jane, you have to wait for him to disembark,” Roger pointed out. He tucked everything back into his tote with an air of frustration. I knew taking care of me was not exactly high on his list of fun things to do, but Roger had seemed different since my accident. I had tried to talk to him about it but he shifted the discussion every time I brought it up. I thought something had maybe happened between him and Jared but Jared brushed off the subject whenever I brought it up to him too, claiming not to know what Roger's attitude change was about. I was pretty sure they were both full of shit and I was kind of hoping that maybe Jared had confided in Shannon what was going on and I was going to get some answers now that I had him here where I could corner him.
I was so excited when I got my first glimpse of Shannon. He looked like he'd had a nap on the flight and his hair was ruffled in that sort of sleepy parakeet way that was becoming increasingly familiar. I threw myself into his arms as soon as he was in range, and he wasted no time in kissing me, those powerful lips of his pulling me back under his thrall in seconds.
“I missed you, Janey,” he whispered against my ear as he clutched me against him, and I found myself inhaling deeply for that scent of his before I even realized what I was doing. “I've been so worried about you,” he added.
Shannon had just brought a carry-on bag since he was only in for the weekend, and without luggage to collect we were out of the airport and in a cab back to mine and Roger's apartment in a flash. Shannon was uncharacteristically talkative the entire ride, telling me about the shows I had missed. I listened quietly, unsure of what to add. My life had been extremely uneventful since we parted, emergency hearing aside. It felt sort of awkward, sitting like that while he rattled on, knowing it was generally me that carried our conversations. Suddenly though, I didn't know what to say to him at all.
Once we were back at my place Roger started listing all the things I still wasn't allowed to do. Shannon listened patiently and promised to take good care of me, but I was fast becoming tired of being treated like I was a six-year-old. It felt like I was being handed from one babysitter to the next. “I know what I'm allowed to do Roger, and I can make up my own mind about it, ” I said tersely.
“And she's still a little moody,” Roger added.
“Oh fuck you,” I retorted. Shannon's eyes got big. I don't think he'd ever seen a cross word between Roger and me before. Then again, he hadn't been around us that much. We fought occasionally too, just like any other pair of friends. It just never lasted long.
“You know what, Jane, whatever. I'm tired of fighting you today. Drummer boy blows back into town and suddenly nothing else matters to you.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I demanded. I didn't know why things were boiling over now but I was willing to let Roger yell at me a bit if it would help me get to the bottom of whatever had been bothering him.
“Oh come on. All I hear out of you lately is Shannon this and Shannon that...”
“Are you jealous?” I asked incredulously. Surely that wasn't it. Roger had never been jealous of anyone I had dated.
“No, I'm not fucking jealous, Jane!” Roger grumbled. I noticed Shannon grabbing his bag and heading down the hall, wisely leaving us to settle whatever was going on. I had to respect him having enough sense not to get in the middle of it. “I just wish you'd show a little sense.”
“Roger I have been trying my ass off. I've been doing what I'm supposed to do. Am I supposed to feel guilty about wanting to enjoy a weekend with my boyfriend?”
“Is he? Your boyfriend? Have the two of you even talked about that or what that means? Do you know what you're doing at all?” Roger demanded, running his hand through his hair.
I was puzzled by his questions. Of course, Shannon was my boyfriend. We had pushed everything aside to be together. How could he not be my boyfriend? “Are you serious right now Roger? Why are you bringing this up now, in front of Shannon?”
“Because every other time I bring it up you blow me off. Let's face it, Jane, you don't exactly have a stellar track record when it comes to making decisions about men.”
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, you're really the relationship guru here.”
“I'm doing better than you are.”
“Really? Is that so? What happened to Daphne? Why aren't you speaking to Jared?" I felt bad for bringing up Daphne but I was at a loss as to what was going on in Roger's head. "What the fuck is going on with you? Just because I don't know how things got fucked up doesn't mean I don't know they aren't. You're a lot easier to read than you think. Even if I am brain damaged.”
“You're not brain damaged.” Roger insisted.
“Yeah, actually, I am. Let's be honest for a minute. And you've been freaked out ever since it happened.”
“It's not about that Jane. I swear.”
“Then what, Roger? Help me out here. What the fuck has been up with you ever since St. Louis?”
“I don't know,” Roger said. Suddenly all the fight seemed to go out of him and he dropped onto the sofa, head in his hands. I sat down next to him and place my hand at the small of his back, making small soothing circles.
“Roger, I know this thing with me has been stressful for you. I'm really sorry to put you through this....”
“That's not it,” Roger interjected weakly but I continued on.
“I know you're just looking out for me. That's what you do. And I'm sorry I snapped at you. You have to see if from my point of view. Everyone is treating me like I can't even make the simplest decisions for myself, even though the doctors have said I'm mostly fine.” As frustrated and out of sorts as I had been feeling, I felt so much worse suddenly for having snapped at Roger. I knew my moods were still all over the place. I knew my feelings of frustration at the situation were valid, but my attitude was uncalled for. I wanted to reach him but I didn't seem to know how to go about it properly anymore.
“Jane, it's not that. I get it I do. This recovery of yours has been hard for both of us but I don't mind looking out for you, really. I promise," he assured me as he patted my hand.
“Then what is it? I know what my problem is, but you haven't been yourself lately either.”
“Look, just go spend some time with Shannon.” He looked around and noticed that Shannon had disappeared. “Tell him I'm sorry for blowing up like that. I'll take you guys to dinner if you want.”
I shook my head. “No, I was planning on cooking, remember? But Roger...”
“Can we talk about it later? Maybe when your boyfriend isn't probably listening in the background?”
I sighed. I knew I wasn't going to get any further with him right now. “Fine,” I said before going to join Shannon in the bedroom.
Shannon was sitting uncomfortably on the edge of my bed, hands in his lap. “I hope this is your bedroom,” he said with a laugh, pointing to the collection of antique rag dolls in a cabinet on the wall.
I nodded and sat down next to him. “Yeah, I actually collect those. Some of them belonged to my great-grandmother.”
“That's really neat actually. I don't remember you having them in L.A. Though.”
“I didn't have room for them there,” I explained.
Shannon paused, frowning at the floor before continuing. “Is everything okay between you and Roger? Is he mad at me or something? He was kind of pissy on the drive up to Wisconsin after your accident.”
I shook my head. “I don't know what's wrong with him really. Did something happen between him and Jared?”
“Not that I know of. Jared was kind of bitchy for a few days after he left, now that I think about it. But he's been moody lately too so it may not have anything to do with Roger.”
Apparently bored with the conversation, Shannon leaned over and pressed his lips to mine, his tongue inviting itself in to swirly softly with my own. I sighed and laid back against the mattress, pulling Shannon on top of me. In minutes his hands were under my shirt, his mouth leaving a trail of wet, pink skin as he nibbled gently towards my breasts. I just wanted to relax and be with him but Roger's meltdown had me feeling like the world's worst friend. With a sigh, I pushed him aside.
“I'm sorry, “ I apologized. “I'm just worried about Roger. Let's pick this back up after dinner.”
To his credit, Shannon didn't complain, just gave me another kiss before sitting up. “Fine,” he told me with a smirk. “But screaming my name had better be on your list of approved activities. Otherwise, we're just going to have to ignore doctor's orders.”

Long term car rentals are an ideal solution for companies looking to get the maximum benefit out of their vehicles for the minimum investment. They are also a popular choice for those in need of a simple, cost-effective alternative to keeping up with the kind of ongoing maintenance that can soon become a burden to car owners.
Tumblr media
At Dan Dooley, we offer fixed-term rental periods of between 1 month and 24 months, payable in easy to manage monthly installments.
As part of our agreement with you, you can also take advantage of competitive rates on servicing, insurance and other essentials, though any excess mileage (beyond the figure quoted in our agreement), and of course any damages caused to the vehicle whilst in your care, must ultimately come from your wallet.

Tips For Renting A Car In Ireland
Ireland Driving Guide
Renting a car in Ireland and driving around the country yourself is a wonderful way to experience the Emerald Isle. But here’s some advice about the best way to do it.
When my family and I were planning our genealogy trip to Ireland to learn more about our ancestors, we were initially hesitant about renting a car to explore the country by ourselves.
Ireland has a bit of a reputation for narrow and scary winding roads!
Plus of course, they drive on the other side of the road, so there’s that. But the more we researched, the more we realized renting a car in Ireland would allow us to make our itinerary as imaginative as possible.
I love the freedom of road trips and planning my own travel itineraries. Ireland is such a diverse country that it made sense to rent a car so we could stop anywhere to discover small villages, castles, and go hiking in the mountains at our own pace.
Here are some important tips we learned from our experience renting a car in Ireland, to help you save money and stay safe while driving around the country!
How To Rent A Car In Ireland
Driving in Ireland for Tourists
Should You Rent A Car In Ireland?
Hey, if you love those big group bus tours, by all means, go book one. It’s a decent way to see Ireland if you don’t have a lot of time.
No planning, no driving, just sit back and let someone else do all the work!
But if you’re like me, you prefer the adventure of independent travel.
No set schedule or timetable — driving around Ireland with the freedom to stop anyplace cool you find along the way.
If that’s the kind of traveler you are, renting a car in Ireland is the way to go!
Just keep in mind that some of the backroads in Ireland can be very narrow, and often feel like a single lane (but they’re not). With some practice, you’ll gain confidence on them!
Another nice thing we enjoyed about having a car was the ability to store things in the trunk, stopping off in Irish towns with small daypacks rather than hauling luggage everywhere.
Learning to Drive on the Opposite Side!
Where To Rent Your Car In Ireland
The best site to book your car is Discover Car Hire. They search both local and international car rental companies to help you find the best possible price. This is the easiest way to rent a car in Ireland.
We rented our car from Dublin Airport after spending a few days in the city. Our South West route brought us to Cork on the M8 before moving on to Killarney National Park and then Glengarriff, where my grandmother was born.
After tracking down our family history in this small coastal fishing village, we drove North on the Wild Atlantic Way up to Dingle and the famous Cliffs of Moher, then to Galway, and finally back to Dublin.
However there are many different road trip routes you can choose when driving in Ireland. Other major airports to consider picking up a car are Shannon in the Southwest and Cork in the Southeast.

Car Rental Insurance In Ireland
Some of the rumors about driving in Ireland are true, and the roads are VERY narrow in areas. Especially the backroads outside Ireland’s smaller towns. Don’t worry, I’ll share some tips for dealing with them below.
This is why I highly recommend getting full insurance coverage.
Typically, rental cars in Ireland come with a basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), but this isn’t exactly insurance, and only covers the car for up to €1000-3000 EUROS worth of damage.
This is the amount they hold on your credit card until you return the car in one piece. CDW typically does not include tire, cracked windshield, or undercarriage damage either.
While you can often save money booking your car with a credit card that includes car rental insurance, you REALLY must read the fine print, because many people wrongly assume their card covers them in Ireland.
If you get in a wreck driving in Ireland, declined full coverage, and you suddenly learn your credit card doesn’t actually cover the damage — you’re screwed. I can’t tell you how many travel horror stories I’ve heard like this…
It’s why I usually pre-book full coverage online. It’s cheaper than at the counter — and then you won’t have to worry about accidents at all!
The Stunning Cobh Cathedral
How Much Does It Cost To Rent A Car In Ireland?
Renting a car in Ireland is going to cost you around $25-$40 USD a day, depending on the type of car you get. Our 4 door sedan was about $30 per day.
I recommend renting a car with an actual trunk (no hatchbacks) to hide your luggage from prying eyes. It helps to prevent break-ins if thieves can’t see your stuff.
Gas Prices
Gas (petrol) prices in Ireland might seem cheap to Americans, but remember that the rest of the world quotes gas in Liters, not Gallons (1 Gallon = 3.78 Liters). Currently, gas costs about $5.90 per gallon (€1.40 per liter) in Ireland. Diesel cars will often save you some money on gas.
Automatic vs Manual
Automatic cars are more expensive to rent than manual cars (but manuals are more common in Ireland), and you must specify what type you want when booking.
One-Way Rentals
There’s also an additional fee for one-way car rentals, which can vary by company. For example, if you want to drop off the car in a different city than you started from.
Admin Fee
If you opt to use your own credit card insurance, companies will charge you an “admin fee” of about €30 EURO.
Credit Card Fee
I was charged an extra €5 EURO just for using a credit card. Which is strange to me, but typical in Ireland.
Irish Taxes
Car rentals in Ireland have a very high tax rate of 13.6%. Ouch!
Age Requirements For Renting A Car
The minimum age for driving in Ireland is 18 years old, however most car rental companies enforce their own age limit of 21 years old to rent a car. They also charge an additional fee if you’re under 24 years old.
Driving Through the Town of Killarney
Irish Driving Laws Tourists Should Know
The most confusing part of driving in Ireland for most tourists is driving on the left side of the road — with the driver’s seat on the right side of the car.
If you’ve never been to a country that drives on the left, it’s wise to practice a bit in a small town before you head onto the highways of Ireland.
For example, just North of Dublin Airport is the town of Swords. Maybe spend an hour or two getting the hang of driving there before you enter Dublin or onto the main highways.
While challenging at first, especially if driving a manual, you’ll get the hang of it quickly and will be ready to explore Ireland by car in no time!
The speed limit on local roads is generally around 80 km/h while on national highways it’s up to 100 km/h.
International Driver’s License
No, you do not need an international driver’s license to drive in Ireland or rent a car there. Just bring your passport, credit card, and your driver’s license from your home country.
Ross Castle at Sunrise
Helpful Tips For Driving In Ireland
Watch out for sheep! In many smaller towns, local shepherds move their sheep on the roads. You can easily round a sharp bend and find yourself stuck behind a huge flock walking down the road.
Narrow backroads in Ireland don’t have standard break-down lanes as we have in America. There’s often no room for error or pulling over.
Sometimes your side-view mirror will be inches away from stone walls or hedges while passing other cars! It can make driving here nerve-wracking.
Remember to carry some cash for road tolls on Ireland’s major highways. Irish tolls can cost between $1-$3 for a passenger car.
In the countryside, some roads are truly single lane, but with traffic in both directions. In these situations, there are pull-outs so one of you can pull over for the other to pass.
USEFUL TIP: Buy a cheap “learner” sticker (L) sold at gas stations so locals don’t get pissed off at your incompetence on their roads!

Advice For Renting A Car In Ireland
You don’t need a rental car for Dublin itself. Parking can be a pain and Dublin is very walkable with excellent public transportation too.
If you’re starting your trip in Dublin, maybe book a rental car when you’re ready to leave the city, for exploring the rest of the country.
Don’t book a car without reading the company reviews. You’ll find plenty of bad reviews for every company (people love to complain online), but try to pick one with the LEAST bad reviews.
You may not always get the make/model/type of car you booked. If they give you a smaller car, or a manual when you asked for an automatic, be pushy and ask for an upgrade.
Inspect your car thoroughly and record video on your smartphone pointing out damage before you leave. This is a backup if they attempt to charge you for damage that was already there.
Pay attention to if your car takes regular petrol or diesel fuel, so you fill up with the correct type at gas stations.
Use Google Maps on your smartphone for directions. Bring your own hands-free adapter and buy an Irish SIM card at the airport.
Enjoy Your Ireland Road Trip!
Exploring the small villages, ancient castles, green mountains, and coastal cliffs of Ireland in a rental car was definitely the right choice for us.
Self-drive road trips get off the beaten track to see things most people miss! ★

McClenneys (& McCullough/Moore) in Ireland
About a year ago…the senior McClenneys (Byron & Kay) proposed a family trip to Ireland…they had done some old family research a few years earlier and had tied the McClenney family that settled in North Carolina to Foynes…which is located on the Shannon Estuary in County Limerick in the southwest part of Ireland…. Trip planning began and they settled on Kenmare in County Kerry as the first stop…and then Connemara in County Galway as the second location… Now the hard part began…trying to get the younger family members to plan ahead with a target date in mind…the biggest obstacles were military leave (Jack) and vacation slot seniority or lack of (Max)…but in the end…the dates worked out and our trip roster is: Patrons Byron & Kay Sons Mark (Moore)
Todd
Mark (McClenney) Daughters-in-law Aline
Krissie Grandsons Ben
Jack
Max Granddaughters-in-law Shannon
Rachael With fixed dates, now the travel planning was put into motion…at the time of this writing…it looks as if all of the flights will be booked using points and miles earned through various methods…Kay & Byron have been top-tier fliers with United for years….Mark Moore has used miles and points strategies to fly around the world for years while being based in India…and I feel sure that this trip is some sort of stopover on a continuing journey…and Mark/Krissie are going the budget points route with Southwest companion pass to Boston…then Aer Lingus to Shannon on a “sweet spot” low mileage ticket through British Airways Avios…Max and Shannon are able to take advantage of his employment with American Airlines and initial plans are for Ben to meet up with them in New York and tag along as a non-rev standby…and Jack/Rachael are also going the Aer Lingus route through BA Avios…although they have to drive to Minneapolis to start the trip because it is so expensive to fly in/out of anyplace with an airport in North Dakota…Todd/Aline plans are not known at this time…but they are confirmed so we have 10 people planning to arrive at either Shannon Airport or Dublin Airport on July 22nd… The next hurdle to jump over will be getting the group that arrives in Dublin from the airport to Kenmare…8 people in total and only a compact car currently confirmed…and Ireland has this funny rule where they exorbitantly overcharge adults under 25 years of age for rental cars…not to mention inconveniencing us with driving on the wrong side of the road…so it looks like a train to Cork will be in the plans for part of the group… We are all thankful that once we arrive in Kenmare…the next 6 days have been planned by Kay & Byron… It is July 4th…next posts will be on travel days as we continually check via text whether everyone made their flights and/or went to the right city or terminal… To quote the Irish…“Tada gan iarracht”

itinerary: ireland
June 10th - June 23rd, 2017
June 10: Evening departure from Philadelphia bound for Dublin. Pray for good airline food.
June 11: Dublin An easy day meandering around the city and getting the lay of the land, maybe stopping to buy some snacks to keep handy for the upcoming days. Cash exchange?
June 12: Dublin
Phoenix Park & Georgian neighborhoods
Trinity College, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the Guinness Storehouse (I’ve never had Guinness, but I’m ready to retch)
June 13: Belfast Heading up the coast to pay a quick visit to Belfast by rite of being a huge maritime history nerd. I’ll be visiting the Titanic Museum, which is located right next to the dry dock where the ship was built.
June 14: Cork/Blarney Castle Am I actually going to kiss the stone? I guess we’ll have to wait and see! The castle was built by the MacCarthy family in the 13th century, and I’ve heard that it’s imposing. Pics will be plentiful. It’s also my best friend’s birthday, so I’ll have to grab her a gift.
June 15: The Ring of Kerry Driving 112 miles around the Iveragh Peninsula. I’m also making a pit stop in Glenbeigh to see The Bog Village! It’s a re-creation of an Irish village from the early 1800s.
June 16: Cliffs of Moher/Galway My brother’s birthday that I’ll be missing (mental note: get him a killer present), but I’ll make this day count just for that! Making my way up to the Cliffs of Moher. I’ve seen photos of this place for years, and I can’t wait to see them myself. Once I’m finished taking in the view, I’m off to Galway.
June 17: Aran Islands Sincerely praying that the weather will hold for me so that this is possible. Inishmore is home to a prehistoric hillfort and some lovely coastline. It’s also a bastion for the Gaelic language, which sounds very pretty and is pleasing to my ears.
June 18: The Burren/Cliffs of Moher I’m excited for this day in particular, since it’s the day I rendezvous with my parents at the Shannon airport. Once we pick up the rental car we’ll be traversing through the Burren for some photo opportunities and to walk along some of the rugged landscape.
Aillwee Cave
Poulnabrone Dolmen (a 5000 year old burial tomb)
Ballyvaughan (a scenic fishing village)
Dunguaire Castle
Then it’s back to the cliffs before finding our hotel near Galway Bay.
June 19: Connemara Coast
Kylemore Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1920 on the grounds of Kylemore Castle.
Oughterard
Killary Fjord
Maam Cross
Inagh Valley
Leenane
June 20: Limerick
King John’s Castle (I’ve seen this place mentioned in so many documentaries I have to visit in person)
St. Mary’s Cathedral
University of Limerick (I almost studied abroad here! Gotta’ pick up a shirt!)
June 21: Killarney Definitely one of the most exciting parts of the trip plan for me so far.
Gap of Dunloe
Lough Leane and Ross Castle
June 22: Killarney/Bunratty
All in all, a day for relaxation and driving back up north to poke around the town of Adare before a late dinner at Bunratty Castle.
June 23: Heading home
Too soon to think about this now.

Don’t know the date, but I’ll see what I can do to reconstruct the days to arrive at it. We flew out of Newburgh Airport at around 8 PM on Sept. 27. Norwegian Airlines. Last year we flew with them to the UK and they are crap, tiny seats, but we got lucky this year and the seat next to us was empty, so Mimi could stretch her long legs. At the end of the flight her legs didn’t bother her like last year, so we started the trip on a plus.
We arrived at Shannon Airport at 8AM the next morning, due to the flight and the time difference. Getting into Ireland was a breeze. Shannon is small (not as small as Stewart Airport in Newburgh, but small.
We had to wait a few hours to get our rental car (Dan Dooley Rentals) so we ate at the airport. We were pretty tired already.
The rental car experience was nice. We told them we’d be bringing the car back late on the last day, and they said, “No worries, we won’t charge you.” Then they upgraded our car for free. Good thing. Because we can barely fit into the Ford Peanut (or whatever it is) as it is.
Drove around the lot three or four times to get a feel for driving on the left with a manual shift, and off we went to Adare, the most picturesque village in Ireland (much overrated and overrun with tourists.) By this time the weather had turned to crap, but we were determined to take a tour of Desmond Castle. We bought Ireland Heritage passes (which we got cheap because the tourist bureau had run out of the new ones, and only had old ones, and senior passes at that. So they sold them to us for the old, senior, price. Good deal, but this “Senior” thing is a little unnerving. As was the driving for the first two days. More on this in a bit.
The weather turned better a few hours later, in time for the last Desmond Castle tour. It was really good. Castle was in ruins, but the guide was droll and informed. Found out how Adare was one of the few towns that was spared the wrath of the British due to the Earl of the town being really humane. Nice. Reading a bit of Irish history, I feel that this piece of real estate has about the most fucked up history I know of. So convoluted.
Also reading and listening to Irish (it’s called “Irish” not “Gaelic”) language. Just learning phrases is not too bad, but if you think the French spell things weird, you ain’t read nuthin’ yet.
After Adare ,we drove a few kilometers to Patrickswell, where our first AirBnB was. Anne was our host. A nice older woman with a very clean place and a good bed. We’d gotten there late, and tired.
