MOT Test — Ultimate Guide
Do you own a used car in the UK? If so, you must have your MOT tested each year. All vehicles in the UK three years old or older must have an MOT test. Maintaining your car’s MOT test is crucial since it helps to determine whether it is safe to drive on public roads.
Tumblr media
What is the MOT test?
The MOT test (Ministry of Transport) is an annual test required for vehicles over 3 years old in the United Kingdom. The test aims to ensure that vehicles meet minimum road safety and environmental standards.
The MOT test checks various vehicle components, including brakes, tyres, lights, bodywork, and emissions, to ensure that they meet the minimum legal standards. An approved MOT testing center carries out the test, and if the vehicle passes, it will be issued with an MOT certificate, valid for one year. If the car fails the test, it must be repaired and retested.
What are the new MOT test rules?
In 2018, the MOT test underwent significant changes, introducing new categories for defects and new minimum standards for specific components. These changes aimed to improve road safety and reduce emissions.
How do you check MOT history online?
Many websites, like Dvla MOT Check, Car Analytics, and The Auto Experts, now offer free online MOT status checks. You can use them if you’ve misplaced your certificate or need to verify when your MOT is due or if you’ve lost it temporarily.
In order to avoid accidentally missing your MOT date, you can sign up for reminders through all of the online services. You only need your car registration number or the license plate of any vehicle you’re considering purchasing.
What if my vehicle fails the MOT test?
If your vehicle fails the MOT, you will be issued a refusal of an MOT certificate and a list of the items that need to be repaired or replaced. You will need to complete the necessary repairs and have the vehicle retested.
It is important to note that a vehicle cannot be driven on the road without a valid MOT certificate. If your vehicle’s MOT certificate has expired and has yet to be retested, you could be fined and receive penalty points on your license.
How much does an MOT cost?
The cost of an MOT test in the UK varies based on the type of vehicle and location of the test. Currently, an MOT test for a car costs £54.85, and a motorcycle costs £29.65. Prices may vary at different garages and dealerships. Repairs needed to pass the test are not included in the MOT fee. Some vehicles, such as those over 40 years old or used for agriculture, may be exempt from the MOT test.
How can I prepare for the MOT test?
To prepare for the MOT test, you can:
· Check the manual for recommended service intervals and specific checks
· Check the tyres for tread depth and inflation
· Check the lights and replace any non-working bulbs
· Check the windscreen for cracks or chips
· Check fluid levels
· Check seatbelts for good working order and lack of damage
These checks ensure that your vehicle is in good condition for the MOT test and increase the chances of passing.
Conclusion
The MOT test is an annual test required for vehicles over 3 years old in the United Kingdom. The test aims to ensure that vehicles meet minimum road safety and environmental standards.
By preparing your vehicle and ensuring it is in good condition, you can increase the chances of it passing the MOT test and avoid needing costly repairs. Having your vehicle tested yearly is crucial to ensure that it is safe to drive and avoid fines and penalty points on your license.

Amestris Military Real world Influence
This is the third of my series of long posts about the Amestrian Military. This is the post for the history nerds. There are plenty of real world references in Fullmetal Alchemist, especially pertaining to the first half of the 20th century. While Amestris and its military have often been compared to Nazi Germany (especially when it comes to the anime), the references in the manga are very diverse. Disclaimer, this is by no means an exhaustive list, there are too many for me to cover in one post, and I'm not a historian. So let me know if there's any reference I might have missed or if I got something wrong!
To see the rest of this meta series check out the Main Post..
Names
Probably the easiest reference to the real world is in the names of the military personnel. Almost all of them are named after military vehicles and equipment, mainly from World War II. Some examples:
Roy Mustang — P-51 Mustang (USA WW2 aircraft)
Riza Hawkeye & Grumman — Northrop Hawkeye E-2 Grumman (USA 60s aircraft)
Maes Hughes — Hughes aircraft series (USA aircraft company)
Black Hayate — Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate (Japanese WW2 aircraft)
Jean Havoc & Henry Douglas— Douglas A-20 Havoc (USA WW2 aircraft)
Heymans Breda — Breda M37 (Italy WW2 Machine gun) or HMS Breda (UK WW2 Yacht)
Kain Fuery — Hawker Fury (UK 30s aircraft)
Vato Falman — Farman aircrafts series (French aircraft company)
Armstrong Family — Armstrong Whitworth Whitley (UK WW2 aircraft)
Weapons and equipment
The weapons used by the military are also based on real world weaponry. Arakawa herself admitted to using references for weapons as well as for the vehicles.[1] Not all of them are a direct copy of a historical weapon, but all of them are at least inspired by one or more of them.
Pistol — Colt M1911A1 (USA 1924)
Tumblr media
Hawkeye's pistol. [1]
Tumblr media
Colt M1911 & M1911A
Rifle — Mauser Karabiner 98k (Germany WW2)
Tumblr media

Hand grenade — Stielhandgranate M24 aka the potato mashers (Germany WW2)
Tumblr media
Team Mustang's and their weapons. [1]
Tumblr media

Briggs' Tank
The Briggs' tank isn’t modeled directly after any specific tank, and rather takes inspiration from different WW1 to WW2 tanks. The manga and Brotherhood tanks take after different inspirations, with Brotherhood being more German coded than the manga tank. There's an excellent article in the tanks encyclopedia analyzing the Fullmetal Alchemist tanks if anyone's interested.
Military Cars —
We see a few military cars throughout the story. Once again the cars we see in the manga and Brotherhood are quite different, and they appear to be based on models from the late 1910s to the late 1930s.
The manga’s standard issued military car looks at least partially inspired by the American Ford model A of 1927.
Tumblr media
Mustang's military car(manga).[2]
Tumblr media

The Brotherhood art sketches have two different drawings of military cars. The first one, the one we see Mustang use, is based on the French Citroën traction avant 11CV of 1935.

The second car seems to be inspired by the Italian Fiat Tipo 5 of the 1910s. Perhaps even inspired by one of the American made Fiat models.

Ranks and insignias
With the exception of the Führer-President, the Amestrian military ranks appear to be a mix of the USA WW2 officer ranks:
General,
Lt. General,
Major General,
Brigadier General,
Colonel,
Lt. Colonel,
Major,
Captain,
1st Lieutenant,
2nd lieutenant;
As well as the Imperial Japan NCO ranks:
Warrant officer (Special Sergeant Major),
Master Sergeant,
Sergeant,
Corporal.
The history of the Imperial Japan  Warrant Officer rank is a bit confusing and complicated. In the 79 years that the Empire lasted, the Warrant Officer rank saw a lot of changes, being its own category at times, a Senior NCO at others.  The NCO Warrant Officers seem to have been specialized Sergeant Majors (also translated as Master Sergeant) that basically functioned as the most senior of the NCO ranks. Aside from this the one modern country, I could find, that has Warrant Officers as NCO is Malaysia.
The rank of Führer-President (大総統 - Daisōtō in Japanese) replaces the rank of General of the army in the USA officer classification. While the English translation is a direct reference to Nazi Germany, the Japanese word is a lot more nuanced.
The word Daisōtō actually refers to the president of the 1912-1924 Republic of China, and if you Google it, all you will get is images of Bradley himself. The term used for “Führer” is 総統 (Sōtō), without the 大 (Dai) which is instead used in the word president 大統領 (Daitōryō), this is probably the inspiration for the Führer-president title of the official English translation.
However, Sōtō isn't used to refer just to Nazi Germany's Führer, but rather to any fascist associated head of state. As such Germany's Sōtō is the Fuhrer, but Italy's Sōtō is the Duce (Mussolini).
The effect is technically the same (you still think of Hitler and fascism), but the Japanese word is not a direct translation of Führer, nor a direct reference to Nazi Germany, it's more subtle than the English translation. I imagine Führer was used in English (in absence of a more subtle unifying word) as it is more recognizable to the English speaker than other fascist titles like: Duce, Caudillo, Generalísimo, etc.
The WW2 imperial Japan ranks also included superior private, first class private, and second class private, but they were their own class, called soldiers, below the NCO ranks, and were mainly composed of men serving their conscripted time. This might explain their absence in the Amestrian official ranks as Amestris doesn't seem to have conscription.
The rank insignias themselves are pretty much a copy of the imperial Japan ones.
Tumblr media

Uniform
In terms of the uniform there's not one single reference or perfect match for the design, but the closest to it is probably the WW1 French infantry uniform.
Tumblr media
Amestris military uniform. [1]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Early WW1 French uniform
Tumblr media
Late WW1 French uniform
Aside from the color of the French uniform, the long skirt, flaps and boots are very similar to the Amestrian uniform.
The Amestrian short jacket itself seems to be inspired by the WW2 USA Ike jacket.
Tumblr media
USA WW2 Ike jacket.
Furthermore the white lining of the Amestrian uniform reminds me of the Imperial Japan formal uniform jacket, which is itself Prussian and French inspired.
Tumblr media
Imperial Japan Major General formal uniform.
The Briggs uniform is very much WWII winter gear inspired.
Tumblr media
Briggs uniform.[3]
Tumblr media
Soviet WW2 winter uniform
Tumblr media
Finnish WWII sniper.
Out of every uniform variation, the one most German coded is, to no one's surprise, the Führer-president’s. His trench coat looks similar to the WW1 Prussian one.
Tumblr media
Bradley in uniform.
Tumblr media
WW1 Prussian soldiers.
In general the uniform has a very World War I vibe to it, down to the impractical, decorative parts of it like the skirt. This is an uniform that obviously predates modern warfare, very apt for the time period the story is “set on”. This makes an interesting contrast with the weaponry which seem to be mostly World War II inspired.
Other references
Ishval war of extermination
First of all trigger warning for genocide and human experimentation. Just skip this section if you're sensible to these topics.
Just like the Ishvalan are an amalgamation of many cultures and ethnicity, the Ishvalan civil war seems to reference multiple conflicts and events.
Plenty of comparisons have been made with the Jewish genocide in the hands of the Nazi (and the 03 anime leans especially hard on this). There are also similarities with the Herero war and genocide at the hand of the German empire which just like the Ishval Civil war ended in 1908. Another possible reference is the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottoman empire, which also involved a minority living at the border of a nation the country was at war with and being suspected of colluding with the enemy. Both the Armenian and the Ishvalan soldiers serving in the army were dismissed, incarcerated, and eventually executed.
Another more clear cut reference made in the Ishval civil war is Mustang's and Knox’s experimentation. This would be a reference to the horrendous experiments done by both the Nazi and Japan's infamous unit 731. Both which included burning people to test treatments and the limits of the human body.
I am sorry to end up on such a hard note, but I think it's best we move on to other — less traumatic — topics.

I had to make a decision yesterday (personal so I'm not speaking about it here) and before I did that decision, I did many readings to myself. All the answers were positive, telling me to go forward even if it would pinch me a bit. So I did that.
Later I had to walk to the market and I, during the walk, asked Archangel Michael to be my protector and guardian, making sure all goes well. I stopped on the bridge to look at fishes during my way to market. I just love watching them. At the market's parking lot I said in my mind: "Okay, Universe. Give me number 44 as a sign I did the right choice." I can JUST BARELY finish my thought when I see a car from the corner of my right eye. That car had number 44 on its register plate!
During my way home I spotted this HUGE white seagull feather on the grass. It wasn't there when I went to the market. I pick it up. I keep walking towards the bridge and 2 cars with number 44 on their register plates drive past me! I giggle with excitement! I stop on the same spot on the bridge to look at the fishes again, the same spot on the water too what I checked earlier. There floats 2 small but fuzzy white feathers! Fresh ones! They weren't there when I walked and stopped there earlier.
On a long straight part of the road on the other side of the bridge, I notice black feather on the ground. I walk past it but it instantly makes me regret for not picking it up. So, I turn around and go pick it up. It's not only black but it has very beautiful dark metallic blue shine on it! I take it home with me.
At home I turn the TV on and head to take a shower. I'm hell sweaty. After the shower I come to sit on the couch. There's history document going on, line of tanks driving through the city. First tank is showed close from behind, big and white painted number 33 on it. Right after it on the screen comes tank with same big white numbers but this tank's number is 11!
My friend sends me a message here on Tumblr, mentioning number 44! For the next 4 hours I check the clock exactly then, when there's number 44!
My other friend from UK is texting with me via Telegram. She has got herself her very first Tarot deck and would like to pick me a card about my situation which I told her about. I allow and welcome the reading. She gets me 3 cards and all 3 of them are EXACTLY the same cards I got many times when I did myself readings earlier! How wonderful confirmation that is! I'm happy and she's blown away, hahaha!
At 5am I get myself to bed. I feel tired but like in previous nights, I can't sleep. My bedroom window is open to let some cool morning air in before sun rises with the damn heat. I hear a crow across the window / yard road. I haven't heard crows in months! This one caws 2 times and then silence for a minute or two. Then, it caws - 2 times again. From the distance another crow caws back but how many times? I'm not sure. This close crow caws now 3 times, listens long and caws 3 times again.
Eventually the crow closest to me flies to this other crow, it's silent a long time. Suddenly this crow starts to caw repeatedly, fells silent and starts all over again. This happens twice. And then, silence. They are both gone.
Silence continues until I hear faint thud from the living room. It sounds EXACTLY like Verti when he jumped down from his tree or sofa! Maybe he's visiting me as an assurance all is well. All will be well.
I'm alone at home and neither of my wall neighbors are home either. It's dead silent too. Even outside. No birds, humans, bugs, wind, nothing. It's so silent my ears are ringing horribly with tinnitus. It's head splitting.
However, I feel happy and excited! Lots of positive good signs! While all these signs are amazing, soothing my soul and mind, the crow crowns it. Crow cawing 3 times is good sign, especially in the morning plus in this case where I normally NEVER hear them! Repeating caw is good too! Overall hearing crow is good sign! Universe is spamming me with good and positive signs which is comforting, assuring and just... Thank you ❤️ I have no words.
Ps. Not to mention my sister send me a photo earlier yesterday. She bought Sukuna mug to me! ❤️

Kuro 212 spoilers
I saw the spoilers and immediately scrambled to get my hands on the full chapter. Writing this fic did a number on me omg.

South Eastern Railway? Existed in 1889, check.
The route they're taking looks good! RIP with the detour XD (Wikipedia notes that the SER had a "long cross-country route" between Redhill and Reading, so yey, long train ride!) but as the little criminal says...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Restaurant car? The UK got its first restaurant car in 1879 (in a Great Northern Railway train); it was a George Pullman restaurant car. He introduced this type of carriage in the USA years before in 1867. The restaurant car was in the very back and for first-class passengers only. They became more common in the UK throughout the 1880s, but only widespread in the 1890s. Check.
Now, to the crux of the matter. Corridor coaches. ("Again?!" Yes, again...)
About the first restaurant car in the UK:
"However, unlike in later decades, when passengers moved to the restaurant car from their seats through inter-connecting corridors between the carriages, in 1879 they stayed in the carriage for their entire journey."
Tumblr media
And while Ciel and Sebastian do decide to remain in the restaurant car, they were, as they say above, in their own compartment before.
Tumblr media
(EDIT: This here looks very much like a compartment coach. That door doesn't seem to open to a gangway, with all that light. But well.)
A page earlier, we get these panels:
Tumblr media
A train with corridor coaches!
Before, all trains (in the manga at least) looked like compartment coaches.
Corridor coaches superseded compartment coaches around the late 19th/early 20th century. It was a gradual change, of course, with railway companies adopting the new model one after another. With the manga currently set in December 1889, we're in the turnover period, so things would not be uniform everywhere anyway. (This also fits nicely with the overall story, cough. Times of change!)
From Wikipedia about gangway connections:
Tumblr media
Queen Victoria's train had them already in 1869:
Tumblr media
Also: "According to "The Oxford Companion to British Railway History" (Simmons & Biddle, 1997), the first corridor connections came into use in 1882, and the GWR ran the first throughout corridor train between Paddington and Birkenhead in 1892."
December 1889 corridor coaches might be cutting it a bit close, but some railway companies could very well be, and were, ahead of others, so it's certainly possible. And the corridor Trusting Murakami's expert knowledge here that the SER was one of the companies that was ahead. Check.
I had personally hoped when I saw the spoilers that no corridor coaches would be shown, and that Sebastian just teleported Ciel into the restaurant car XD EDIT: But maybe that still happened if it's a "mixed" train after all uh XDD
(And, maybe, the train will look differently in the volume release. Yana, after all, often fixes mistakes; may they be little typos (e.g. Finnian's tattoo) or accidentally time-travelling landmarks (e.g. the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain in the magazine version of Ch157).
Tumblr media
Dear, you don't want to know......
----------
EDIT 2:
Tumblr media
It was really chaotic yesterday, sorry! And I mixed something up. orz The London and Brighton Railway only existed until 1846! They should have talked about its successor, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (1846-1922)! Or maybe the Brighton Main Line. It's possible the translator might have made a mistake here though; one would need to check the raws (which I don't have or know how to get/where to find).

Today’s mix:
Tech House Phenomena 3 by Dave Mothersole 1999 Tech-House
Gonna quote legendary electronic music opinion-haver Ishkur at length here in order to kick off this post, because he and I seem to be of the same mind when it comes to the mostly bad phenomenon that is tech-house music:
Somehow by incorporating the strengths of both Techno and House, Tech House succeeded in appealing to neither. So the result is something frustratingly banal and monotonous when it really shouldn't be...
Tech House straddles the razor-thin tightrope of something that doesn't have enough funky warmth for House yet not enough cold mechanicalism for Techno, so what comes out instead is something stiff, repetitive, and boring. It's such a disappointment, like the last season of Game of Thrones.
Tech House had real promise. It could have done great things with the tools it had. And it's something everyone hoped would happen, like feeding Scrabble tiles to a dog to see if it shits out a word. But instead Tech House wasted its potential on pretentious Berlin nightclubs and that aimless, meandering noodlyness that the Brits are fond of, like a 70s prog rock solo that goes on for way too long. Technically interesting but utterly soulless...
Tech House can be good. There is honestly good Tech House out there. I've even heard some. But finding it is a Herculian task of Sisyphian anguish in a Kafka-esque, Orwellian realm of Dostoevskian torment. It is possible to load up your music player with nothing but Tech House mixes, hop into your car, and drive to the other end of the continent and back and never hear the same song twice yet never hear an interesting song once. The odds of coming across decent Tech House are worse than needles made of diamonds in a rough full of haystacks.
So, a big yes to pretty much all of that. I'm always willing to give tech-house (and all genres, for that matter) a chance, but I usually end up being bored by it in the end, and this ephemeral 1999 mix from veteran UK DJ Dave Mothersole as part of London label Eukahouse’s Tech House Phenomena series is no exception. It's just always basically moderately interesting backbeats with nothing melodically interesting going on on top. Somehow, this CD has a 4.2 rating on Discogs though, which is pretty high, so while Ishkur says this music's appealing to no one, there are people who seem to actually really enjoy it. But I don't think I'll ever understand why, personally.
That said, there are a few rare occasions on this album when the music's good: San Jose, California's E.B.E. has a track that I've loved for a while now called "Distraught," and it's this dubby, electro-splattery groove that has no two bars on it that sound exactly alike. So, for a dance genre that's typically stifled by monotony, this one seems to stand out from the rest.
And the closer, "Luv Talking," from London's Pure Science, is pretty great too. It's something of an infectious party groove that already comes equipped with sampled bits of recorded revelers itself, so it sort of just has this naturally inviting post-disco house essence to it. And it appears to be exclusive to this mix too, besides its appearance on a 12-inch that's also called Tech House Phenomena 3 that was most likely released as a teaser for this mix.
So, if you'd like to hear that song in particular, or you're brave enough to admit that you actually love tech-house, you can message me for this mix, because I unfortunately am unable to find any kind of link for it.
And go check out Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music too. His website is a uniquely indispensable resource for learning about electronic music and the histories and sonic characteristics of its many niche genres. His depth of knowledge on the subject is incredibly vast, and his genre explainers are witty, funny, and insightful. Plus, the playlists he puts together for each genre are really good too, especially for the genres he enjoys, which seem to be a lot of them. I’m a really big fan of his work and his writings have definitely played a role in helping me develop my own eclectic and nuanced tastes in electronic music. Without him, this silly music blog I have probably would never exist 🥺.
Highlights:

We adopted our dog four and a half years ago without knowing anything about him or his breed, background or anything. We were given very little information from the charity.
We completed an online form, they called us, asked us some questions about our family and home and we were told we could go and collect him, and so we did.
Looking back that raises so many red flags for me.
No in person home check
No initial visit with the dog to check compatibility
When we collected him, he was just handed over outside of the gates of where he had been staying and told he had a cut near his eye
He was incredibly anxious in the car and barked for the entire journey home. When we got him home we saw that the cut was severely infected, his hair was terribly matted and unkempt and he was filthy. So the next day we took him to the vet and the groomers, we also discovered he had an infection in both ears. We contacted the dog charity and explained the situation and they said they would deduct the vet fee from the adoption fees. But that didn’t explain how a dog that had been in their care for the last few months could be in such a state.
We were added to facebook group for people who had adopted dogs from this charity and with a quick search I discovered that we weren’t Oakley’s first adopted family. I sent a message to the previous owner and asked about Oakley and why they sent him back to the charity. They told me that they couldn’t handle him and he didn’t get on with their other dog.
So with that information we contacted the charity and requested more information about Oakley’s history and this is what we were told.
Oakley was found at roughly three months old tied up in a village in the Carpathian Mountains region of Romania, next to a pond. It was assumed that he had been left by sheep farmers because he is quite small for his breed so he would have been the runt of the litter. Mioritic Shepherd dogs guard thousands of sheep in large packs and are known to fight wolves, bears and lynxes to protect the herd.
He was then neutered at roughly four months old and then when he was six months old he was packed into a van and made the long arduous journey to the UK.
When he reached the UK he was placed in a foster home with nearly forty other dogs, with no segregated facilities for him to have his own space, they were all fed together and basically left to their own devices.
At home with us Oakley showed some food aggression particularly when it involves bones and other fresh food. He was also very underweight. He also had not developed bite inhibition. He would also find gaps in fences and bushes to jump through into the neighbours garden.
He would spend hours hiding under the table trying to be invisible. He detested going in his crate, to the point he injured himself destroying it to get out. To which I said to my husband no more crate. He had serious separation anxiety and would chew on my oak chairs and table.
For months we had to show endless patience and compassion and slowly he began to settle in to his new place with our family.
The one thing he never did was mess inside the house.
He is a very vocal dog and if he needs something he will let you know, whatever the time is, much to the annoyance of our neighbours, who have even suggested that we should have him debarked, to which I replied you get your voice surgically removed then!
The barking is breed specific and nothing can change that, so we figure out what it is that he wants and then he is fine.
Even now he is still an anxious dog especially when it comes to going out in the car. So clearly the journey over here traumatised him and left him scarred for life.
Yet Oakley is classed as one of the lucky ones because he didn’t come from a life on the streets or worse a kill shelter.
So the question I am asking is knowing the trauma Oakley has experienced and the resulting anxiety that he has been left living with, what about the other dogs who have experienced trauma from before the journey from either living on the streets or worse in a kill shelter is it worth adding to that and bringing them over to the UK and expecting inexperienced owners take on these challenges?
All the vets that I have spoken with have said that it is cruel to put the dogs through this and that the journey from Romania to the UK is much more traumatic than living on the streets.
I have a friend from Romania who told me that in the villages the stray dogs are seen as the village dogs, people feed them, children play with them. They don’t keep them inside.
So are we getting involved where we don’t need to be? Are we forcing our beliefs of how animals should be kept as pets onto others? In the farming communities dogs and cats are not pets they are part of the community and they have jobs to do. Cats catch mice and other pests. Dogs herd and protect the sheep and other livestock.
I am not picking a side I am merely providing food for thought.
I personally don’t think kill shelters should be allowed but I am just one person and who am I to challenge a foreign government that allows them.

Part 2 - When you have to cut to the bone
For when everything goes south and your budget gets cut to nothing; a continuation from this post where I wrote the first 3 of 6 steps of a financial self rescue plan.
The six steps are: Record. Cut. Save. Cook. Sell. Earn.
I've decided to write the Cook step later since it will take a bit of time to put together. So after the cut are the last two steps, Sell and Earn ...
Step Five - Sell
Clothes, accessories, toys, furniture, bikes, kitchen equipment, fitness equipment, tools ... we all have something at home we can get rid of and earn a little extra money.
Poshmark, Mercari - both are good for selling clothing and accessories.
Ebay - good for selling everything. I've sold clothes, books, and PC equipment like Bluetooth headsets on Ebay. Tip - to help you price your items search for the thing you want to sell, and click the "Advanced" link next to search and you can filter the list on sold items to get the history of recent purchases and compare price and condition to your item.
Craigslist - good for the big stuff that will be hard to ship that you can sell locally. I've sold a bookshelf, our TVs and and a DVD player, a bed frame, a bike. I even sold a car on Craigslist!
Etsy - generally sellers on Etsy are more like shopkeepers than sellers on Ebay. This may be a good place if you have a lot of a particular type of item, like a collection of vintage clothes. Etsy fees are a bit of a problem in my opinion compared with other selling platforms.
Amazon - sell your old books there. Competition is fierce and pricing is very competitive so it's not great. I've had better success selling books on Ebay.
Make sure you account for the website seller fees in your pricing and cover your shipping costs and that's some extra money in the bank.
Step Six - Earn
Here I'm focusing on jobs you can start doing with no additional start up costs.
Part time or extra work may help cover some of your expenses. And a lot of these jobs can be taken on short term and accommodate other jobs, or time consuming activities like job searching.
My former neighbor had a basic 22" push mower and a trimmer and used those to earn some extra cash mowing lawns. He didn't have a trailer or anything, he just loaded them into the boot of his car!
My 81 year old aunt back home in the UK, who traveled a lot to Italy as a young woman and who married an Italian still earns a part time income as an online Italian language coach.
Mrs. RRR works fashion retail and she works for two pet care agencies here in town. She specializes in cat sitting.
I pet sit for dogs - I have four occasional clients around my neighborhood. Two clients' dogs will stay with us, and for the other two I will go to them on multiple visits a day to take out and walk. My clients are direct, so I get cash and no agency take any fees out :)
You don't have to spend your money! Neither Mrs RRR or I will work with Rover.com because we're not going to pay out their background check fee. I'm sure Rover is an excellent service, but we were up shit creek and on a zero spend budget and that meant zero spend! We are lucky that we're in a big enough city that we had alternative agencies.
I'm a fairly fast typist so did some transcription for Rev.com. I found that exhausting, so gave it up, but for a short while it helped plug an income gap a few years ago.
Craigslist - there are quite a few good sections in here for part time and temporary work in here. For example, depending on where you are, there may be a good gig section under city > gigs > event gigs. I just found job listings for work at a local golf tournament in two weekend's time that I'm going to apply to.
Again there's no one big fix, instead it's a question of squeezing the juice as much as possible from every asset you have, sometimes that asset is a lawn mower you can use to earn a bit of extra cash, sometimes it's an old drill you can sell, or it might just some of your time and a bit of sweat.

Exploring the Fascinating World of Salvage History Checks in the UK
Salvage history checks have emerged as an indispensable step in the process of acquiring a used vehicle in the United Kingdom. These checks offer valuable insights into a vehicle's past, enabling potential buyers to make well-informed choices and sidestep potential pitfalls. In this article, we will delve into the significance of salvage history checks, the information they unveil, and their role in fostering a safer and more transparent used car market in the UK.
Understanding Salvage History Checks
A salvage history check, also known as a reg check, stands as an all-encompassing scrutiny of a vehicle's history, with a particular focus on its repair and damage records. The primary goal of this examination is to unearth whether a vehicle has been categorized as a total loss by an insurance company. This categorization occurs due to extensive damage resulting from accidents, theft, or other factors jeopardizing the vehicle's safety and integrity. By procuring a salvage history report, potential buyers can attain profound insights into the vehicle's true condition, enabling them to make informed decisions about their impending purchase.
Information Revealed by Salvage History Checks
1. Total Loss Status: A salvage history check divulges whether a vehicle has previously received the designation of a total loss from an insurance company. This designation signifies that the vehicle endured damage beyond a certain threshold, rendering repairs economically unfeasible or potentially compromising its structural soundness.
2. Accident History: The report may encompass details about any accidents the vehicle has been involved in, offering information about the scale of damage and subsequent repairs undertaken. This data empowers buyers to assess potential risks linked with the vehicle.
3. Category Designation: In the UK, salvage vehicles are categorized under distinct codes based on the extent and nature of their damage. These categories, spanning from A to N, indicate varying levels of damage and repair. The report specifies the category code, enabling buyers to comprehend the severity of the vehicle's historical issues.
4. Previous Owners: Salvage history checks frequently incorporate details about the vehicle's previous owners. This information can shed light on the vehicle's maintenance history and whether it has undergone frequent changes in ownership.
5. Mileage Verification: The report might also include mileage information, a crucial aspect in validating the accuracy of the stated mileage on the vehicle. Odometer tampering poses a concern in the used car market, and a salvage history check aids buyers in recognizing potential discrepancies.
Importance for Buyers and the Used Car Market
Salvage history checks play a pivotal role in promoting transparency and safeguarding consumers within the UK's used car market. Here is why they are essential:
1. Informed Decisions: Armed with salvage history reports, buyers can wield the power of informed decision-making. They can evaluate the associated risks of a specific vehicle, align it with their budget and safety criteria, and make a well-judged choice.
2. Avoiding Scams: Dishonest sellers might endeavour to obscure a vehicle's actual history to facilitate a sale. Salvage history checks empower buyers to uncover potential frauds and extricate themselves from transactions that might lead to costly repairs and safety concerns.
3. Market Integrity: The availability of salvage history checks encourages sellers to be upfront about a vehicle's history. This fosters a climate of trust within the used car market and propels fair transactions.
Salvage history checks have seamlessly woven themselves into the fabric of the UK's used vehicle purchasing landscape. By furnishing crucial insights into a vehicle's past, they empower buyers to make informed choices and navigate the intricate terrain of the used car market. Through illuminating a vehicle's repair history, total loss status, and potential risks, salvage history checks contribute to a more secure, transparent, and reliable environment that benefits both buyers and sellers alike.
