birthdays - cl16
summary: charles and yn's love story spans over two decades, beginning when they meet at charles' 6th birthday party, where she promised to be there for all of his birthdays. wc: 4.6k
folkie radio: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MAIN BOY đĽšđĽš a few years ago i wrote a fic like this for harry and itâs one of my favorite things iâve posted so i felt like doing a charles version! i hope you like this as much as i do <3
MASTERLIST | MY PATREON
6th birthday
The sun shone brightly over Monaco as YN and her mother walked down the tree-lined street. The air was filled with the scent of blooming flowers and the salty breeze from the nearby Mediterranean. The little girl clutched her mother's hand tightly, her eyes wide as she took in the unfamiliar surroundings of their new neighborhood.
"Are you excited for the party, sweetheart?" her mother asked, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze.
She nodded hesitantly. "But what if the other kids don't like me?"
"Don't worry, darling. I'm sure you'll make friends in no time," her mother assured her as they approached a beautiful villa with colorful balloons tied to the gate.
As they entered the backyard, they were greeted by the sight of children running around, laughter filling the air. A large bounce house dominated one corner, while a face-painting station was set up near the house. Tables adorned with race car-themed decorations were scattered around, laden with snacks and party favors.
A warm voice caught their attention. "Welcome! You must be our new neighbors."
YN looked up to see a kind-faced woman approaching them, a welcoming smile on her face.
"I'm Pascale Leclerc," she introduced herself, shaking her mother's hand. "And this must be YN! We're so glad you could make it."
She shyly hid behind her mother's leg, peeking out at Pascale.
"Charles!" Pascale called out. "Come here, darling. There's someone I'd like you to meet."
A small boy with tousled brown hair and bright blue eyes came running over, his cheeks flushed from playing.
"Charles, this is YN. She's new to the neighborhood," Pascale explained. "Why don't you introduce her to your friends?"
Charles grinned widely, revealing a missing front tooth. "Hi! Do you want to play with us? We're having a treasure hunt!"
She looked up at her mother, who nodded encouragingly. Slowly, she stepped out from behind her mother's leg.
"Okay," she said softly, "And happy birthday."
Charles's grin grew even wider. He reached out and took her hand. "Come on! I'll show you where we've found clues already!"
For the rest of the afternoon, YN found herself caught up in the excitement of the party. She and Charles searched for treasure and bounced in the bounce house. By the time the cake was brought out the little girl was laughing and chatting with her new friends as if she'd known them for years.
As the party began to wind down and parents started arriving to pick up their children, Charles approached YN, a serious look on his young face.
"YN," he said, "will you come to my other birthdays too?"
"Yes!" she nodded enthusiastically. "We should be friends!"
Charles's face lit up. "Best friends!" he declared, holding out his pinky.
The girl linked her pinky with his, sealing their newfound friendship. As she left the party, clutching a goody bag and wearing a bright smile, she knew she had found something special in her new home.
12th birthday
The wheels of their bicycles whirred as YN and Charles raced down the winding streets of Monaco. The sun beat down on them, but the breeze created by their speed kept them cool. YN's laughter echoed off the buildings as she pedaled harder, trying to keep up with Charles.
"Come on!â Charles called over his shoulder, a mischievous grin on his face. "We're going to be late for my own party!"
She rolled her eyes but couldn't help smiling. "It's your fault for insisting on this bike race, birthday boy!"
They skidded to a stop in front of Charles's house, both breathing heavily but grinning from ear to ear. The front yard was already bustling with activity - balloons bobbed in the breeze, and the chatter of arriving guests filled the air.
As they walked their bikes to the garage, YN nudged Charles with her elbow. "I can't believe you're twelve already. You're practically ancient."
Charles laughed, running a hand through his windswept hair. "Says the girl who's been twelve for a whole two months. Come on, I smell cake!"
The party was in full swing, with kids from their school playing games and enjoying the sunny day. Charles's parents had outdone themselves this year, setting up a mini go-kart track in the backyard. The birthday boy, of course, was the undisputed champion, zipping around the track with a skill that left his friends in awe.
As the afternoon wore on, everyone gathered around a large table. In the center stood a cake, decorated to look like a Formula 1 car, complete with Charles' lucky number on the side. Twelve candles flickered atop the cake, their flames dancing in the gentle breeze.
Charles's eyes widened as his parents brought out the cake and the guests began to sing "Happy Birthday," their voices rising in a cheerful chorus. YN sang along enthusiastically, watching her best friend's face light up with joy.
As the song came to an end, Charles took a deep breath. With a determined look in his eye, he leaned forward and blew out all twelve candles in one go.
While Charles's mother began cutting the cake, YN edged closer to her best friend. "So," she said with a grin, "what did you wish for? To finally beat me in Mario Kart?"
Charles glanced around conspiratorially before leaning in close. "I wished to win the Monaco Grand Prix one day," he confessed, his green eyes sparkling with dreams of future glory.
YN's smile softened. Even after six years of friendship, Charles's passion for racing never failed to impress her.
"Wow," she said. "That's a pretty big wish."
"It's my biggest dream. But you can't tell anyone, okay? Or it won't come true."
"Your secret's safe with me," she promised. Then, struck by a sudden thought, she held out her pinky finger. "Hey, remember when we promised to be friends forever at your sixth birthday?"
"Of course!" Charles's face lit up with recognition, "Best decision I ever made," he said, linking his pinky with hers.
"Well, let's renew that promise. Friends forever, no matter what. That way, when you win the Monaco Grand Prix, I'll be right there cheering you on."
"Deal," Charles agreed, shaking their linked pinkies. "Forever friends."
As they sealed their promise for the second time, both of them felt the weight of it. At twelve, forever seemed like an awfully long time, but neither could imagine a future without the other in it.
16th birthday
The Italian sun was setting, painting the sky in orange and pink as YN made her way through the bustling paddock. The air smelt of rubber and gasoline, the sounds of engines filling her ears. She clutched a small, wrapped package in her hands, her eyes scanning the team garages for a familiar face.
Finally, she spotted him - Charles was standing next to his Formula 3 car, deep in conversation with his engineer. Even from a distance, she could see the intensity in his eyes, the determination set in his jaw. At sixteen, Charles was no longer the little boy she'd met at that birthday party a decade ago. He was taller now, leaner, with the beginnings of stubble on his chin.
"Charles!" she called out, waving to catch his attention.
His head snapped up at the sound of her voice, and his serious expression melted into a wide grin. "YN! You made it!" He excused himself from his engineer and jogged over to her, pulling her into a tight hug.
"Of course I made it," YN laughed, returning the embrace, "I couldn't miss your birthday, even if you insisted on spending it at a racetrack in Italy."
Charles pulled back, his eyes shining with excitement. "I'm so glad you're here. Come on, let me show you around."
As they walked through the paddock, Charles pointed out different teams and drivers, explaining the intricacies of Formula 3 racing. She listened intently, asking questions and marveling at how much Charles had grown not just in stature, but in knowledge and passion for his sport.
They ended up in Charles' team garage, where a small cake sat on a tool cart, a single candle stuck in the center.
"The team got it for me," Charles explained, looking a bit embarrassed. "They said we had to have something, even if we're not having a proper party."
YN smiled softly. "Well, then we better make it count." She lit the candle and started singing "Happy Birthday," her voice soon joined by the mechanics and other team members who had gathered around.
Charles blew out the candle, his cheeks slightly flushed. As the cake was being cut and distributed, YN handed him her gift.
"It's not much," she said as he unwrapped it, "but I thought you might like it."
Inside was a leather-bound journal, the cover embossed with Charles' initials.
"I thought you could use it to write down your thoughts, your goals⌠maybe even your future Formula 1 strategies," she explained with a wink.
Charles's eyes lit up. "This is perfect. Thank you." He pulled her into another hug, this one lasting a bit longer than usual.
As they sat on the pit wall, eating cake and watching the sun set over the track, YN turned to Charles. "So, how does it feel? Being here, racing in Formula 3⌠you're so close to your dream now."
Charles nodded, his expression turning serious. "It feels amazing, but also a bit scary. Everything's happening so fast, you know? Sometimes I worryâŚ"
"Worry about what?" she prompted gently.
"That I might not be good enough," Charles sighed, "That I'll let everyone down."
"Charles, look at me," YN reached out and took his hand, when he met her eyes, she continued, "You are the most talented, dedicated person I know. You're going to make it to Formula 1, and you're going to be amazing."
"You really think so?" a small smile tugged at Charles's lips.
"I know so," she affirmed, then, with a playful nudge, she added, "Just promise me one thing?"
"Anything," Charles replied without hesitation.
"When you make it to Formula 1 and become a big star, don't forget about me, okay?"
Charles's expression softened, and for a moment, YN thought she saw something flicker in his eyes - something more than just friendship. But before she could analyze it, he squeezed her hand and said, "I could never forget about you. No matter what happens, you'll always be my best friend."
What YN didn't know was that in that moment, Charles was fighting the urge to tell her how he really felt. That she wasn't just his best friend, but the girl he had fallen in love with years ago.
But the timing wasn't right, not yet.
So he pushed the feelings down, locked them away. There would be time for matters of the heart later. For now, he had a championship to win and a birthday to celebrate - with his best friend by his side, just as she'd always been.
21st birthday
The Monaco night was alive with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses. Charles Leclerc's 21st birthday party was in full swing at a rooftop bar overlooking the Mediterranean.
The who's who of the racing world mingled with Charles' friends and family, all gathered to celebrate the young Sauber driver's birthday.
YN stood at the edge of the crowd, nursing a glass of champagne as she watched Charles work the room. He moved with an easy confidence, shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries with team principals and fellow drivers. Yet every few minutes, his eyes would scan the crowd until they found her, and he'd flash her a quick smile before returning to his conversations.
As the night wore on, YN found herself on the balcony, enjoying a moment of quiet away from the party. The view of Monaco at night was breathtaking - the lights of the city twinkled below, mirroring the stars above.
"There you are," a familiar voice said behind her. "I've been looking for you."
She turned to see Charles approaching, two fresh glasses of champagne in his hands. He handed one to her before leaning on the balcony railing beside her.
"Sorry," she said with a small smile. "I just needed a bit of air. It's quite a party in there."
"Yeah, I think the team might have gone a bit overboard," Charles chuckled, "But I'm glad you're here."
They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, sipping their champagne and looking out over the city.
"So," YN said finally, turning to face him. "How does it feel to be 21? Official adult now, Formula 1 driver⌠you're living the dream, Charles."
Charles's expression turned thoughtful. "It feels⌠surreal, honestly. Sometimes I can't believe this is my life." He paused, then added softly, "But you know what the best part is?"
"What's that?"
Charles turned to face her, his green eyes intense in the moonlight. "That you're still here. After all these years, all these changes⌠you're still by my side."
YN felt her heart skip a beat at the earnestness in his voice. "Of course I am, Charles. I'll always be here for you. We made a promise, remember? Best friends forever."
Charles felt his heart race at her words. "Best friends forever." The phrase that had once brought him so much comfort now felt like a bittersweet reminder of the feelings he'd been harboring for so long.
As he looked at her, bathed in the soft glow of the Monaco night, memories flooded his mind. He thought of her cheering him on at his first go-kart race, of late-night study sessions where he'd catch himself staring at her instead of his textbooks, of the way his heart had leapt when she'd surprised him at his race in Italy on his 16th birthday. He realized he couldn't pinpoint exactly when he'd fallen in love with her because, in a way, he always had been.
The weight of his unspoken feelings suddenly felt unbearable. The thought of going another day, another year, without her knowing the truth seemed impossible. Charles took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he was about to do.
"YN," he said softly, setting down his champagne glass and taking her free hand in his. "There's something I need to tell you."
She looked up at him, curiosity and a hint of something else â was it hope? â in her eyes. "What is it, Charles?"
Charles swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his ears. "You're right, we did make a promise to be best friends forever. And you are my best friend, YN. You're the person who knows me better than anyone else in the world. But..." he paused, gathering his courage. "But you're not just my best friend. You're the one I'm in love with. I always have been."
YN's eyes widened, her lips parting in surprise. Charles pressed on, unable to stop now that he'd started.
"I can't hold back anymore. I've been in love with you for as long as I can remember. Every success and failure, every moment of doubt or triumph â you're the one I want to share it all with. Not just as my friend, but as... as more."
He took a step closer, his eyes never leaving hers. "I know this might change everything between us, and if you don't feel the same way, I understand. But I couldn't let another birthday go by without telling you the truth. You're it for me, YN. You always have been."
For a moment that felt like an eternity, she stood frozen, her eyes locked with Charles's. The weight of his words hung in the air between them, charged with years of unspoken feelings and shared history.
Then, without warning, YN closed the distance between them. She reached up, cupping Charles's face in her hands, and pressed her lips to his in a kiss that was both tender and passionate. Charles, caught off guard for only a split second, wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer as he returned the kiss with equal fervor.
When they finally parted, both slightly breathless, YN rested her forehead against Charles'. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears of joy as she whispered, "I love you too, Charles. I think I always have."
Charles felt his heart soar, a smile spreading across his face that was brighter than any he'd ever worn on a podium. "Really?" he asked, his voice filled with wonder and hope.
She nodded, a soft laugh escaping her lips. "Really. I just... I never thought you'd feel the same way. You're Charles, I'm just-"
"You're everything," Charles interrupted, his voice firm but gentle. "You're my best friend, my biggest supporter, the person I want to share every moment with. You're the one who knows all of me, not just the racer, but the boy who still gets nervous before every race and who can't sleep without his lucky charm."
YN smiled, remembering the small trinket she'd given him years ago that he still kept with him at every race. "We've been quite oblivious, haven't we?" she said, shaking her head in amusement.
Charles chuckled, pulling her close again. "Maybe. But we have all the time in the world to make up for it now."
As they stood there, wrapped in each other's arms with the twinkling lights of Monaco as their backdrop, both felt as though they were exactly where they were meant to be. The sounds of the party drifted out to them, a reminder of the celebration waiting inside, but for now, they were content in their own world.
"Happy birthday, Charles," YN murmured, leaning in for another kiss.
Charles smiled against her lips. "Best birthday ever," he replied before closing the distance between them once more.
24th birthday
The sun was setting over Monaco as YN stood in front of the mirror, putting the finishing touches on her makeup. She smoothed down her dress, a sleek number in Charles' favorite shade of red. As she fastened her earrings, she felt a pair of strong arms wrap around her waist from behind.
"You look absolutely stunning," Charles murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder and meeting her eyes in the mirror.
She smiled, leaning back into his embrace. "You clean up pretty well yourself, birthday boy," she replied, taking in his sharp suit and perfectly styled hair.
Charles pressed a soft kiss to the curve of her neck, causing her to shiver slightly. "You know," he said, his voice low and playful, "we could always skip the party. Stay here, just the two of usâŚ"
"Nice try, Leclerc," YN laughed, turning in his arms to face him, "But your team worked hard on this party, and all your friends and family are waiting." She reached up, straightening his tie. "Besides, I put a lot of effort into your gift. I want to see your face when you open it."
"Oh? Any hints about what it might be?" Charles' eyes lit up with curiosity.
"Not a chance," YN grinned, tapping his nose playfully. "You'll just have to wait and see."
He pouted for a moment before breaking into a warm smile. "Fine, keep your secrets. As long as I have you by my side, that's all the gift I need."
YN felt her heart melt at his words. Even after all these years, Charles still had the ability to make her feel like the luckiest girl in the world. She leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to his lips.
"I love you," she whispered against his mouth.
"I love you too," Charles replied, deepening the kiss for a moment before reluctantly pulling away. "But you're right, we should get going. We don't want to be late to my own party."
As they drove through the winding streets of Monaco, the city lights twinkling like stars, YN couldn't help but steal glances at Charles. Suddenly, she noticed that they were heading away from the bustling city center.
"Charles?" she asked, a hint of confusion in her voice. "I think we're going the wrong way. The party's downtown, isn't it?"
Charles smiled mysteriously, his eyes never leaving the road. "I thought we'd take a little detour first. Trust me?"
"Always."
They drove in comfortable silence for a few more minutes, the familiar sights of Monaco giving way to a quieter, more residential area. Finally, Charles pulled up in front of a beautiful house, its elegant facade bathed in the glow of streetlights.
"Charles, what are we doing here?" YN asked as he came around to open her door.
He took her hand, helping her out of the car. "I have something to show you," he said softly, leading her towards the house.
As they approached the front door, Charles pulled out a key. YN's eyes widened in surprise. "Charles, is this...?"
He unlocked the door and gently guided her inside. The house was empty, but even in the dim light, she could see its potential - high ceilings, large windows, and an open floor plan that seemed to invite warmth and laughter.
Charles watched her take it all in, his heart pounding with nervous excitement. Finally, he spoke.
"YN, from the moment I met you, you've been my home. No matter where I am in the world, no matter what challenges I face on the track, you're my constant. My safe haven."
She turned to face him, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
Charles continued, his voice thick with emotion. "But I realized that while you've given me a home in your heart, I've never been able to offer you a physical place that's truly ours. Until now."
He took both of her hands in his. "This house... I bought it for us. I want it to be our home. A place where we can build our future together, where we can come back to after long days or weeks apart. A place filled with our love and hopefully... our family someday."
Tears were now flowing freely down YN's cheeks. "Charles," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
"I know my career keeps us traveling a lot," he said, reaching up to wipe away her tears gently. "But I want you to have roots, a place that's ours. Where you can always feel safe and loved, even when I'm not there."
YN let out a watery laugh, shaking her head in disbelief. "You never cease to amaze me, Charles Leclerc. This is... it's perfect. It's more than I ever dreamed of."
"So, what do you say?" Charles pulled her close, resting his forehead against hers, "Ready to start our next chapter here?"
Instead of answering with words, she closed the gap between them, pouring all her love and gratitude into a passionate kiss. When they finally parted, both breathless, she whispered, "Yes. A thousand times, yes."
They stood there in the empty house that would soon become their home, holding each other close. The party, the guests, the whole world outside ceased to exist for a moment. It was just the two of them, standing on the threshold of their future together.
After a while, Charles chuckled softly. "You know, we're probably very late for the party now."
"I know," she said, her voice still thick with emotion, "It's supposed to be me giving you gifts on your birthday, not the other way around."
Charles chuckled softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Well, I've never been very good at following rules," he teased. "Besides, seeing your face when I showed you our home? That's the best gift I could ever receive."
YN shook her head, a warm smile playing on her lips. "You're impossible, you know that? But I love you for it."
"And I love you, for as long as I can remember."
27th birthday
Charles stood on the balcony of their home, the same one he had surprised YN with three years ago. His fingers absently traced the outline of a small velvet box in his pocket, his heart racing with anticipation and nerves.
Inside, he could hear her moving about, putting the finishing touches on his birthday dinner. The aroma of his favorite dishes filled the air, bringing a smile to his face. At 27, Charles had achieved more than he ever dreamed possible â multiple Formula 1 wins, a strong contender for the championship, and most importantly, a life shared with his best friend and the love of his life.
"Charles?" her voice called from inside. "Dinner's ready!"
He took a deep breath, patting the ring box one last time before heading inside. The dining room was bathed in soft candlelight, the table set beautifully with their best china. YN stood by the table, looking radiant in a deep red dress that matched the color he wore on race days.
"Happy birthday, my love," she said softly, pulling him into a tender kiss.
As they sat down to eat, Charles couldn't help but marvel at how far they'd come. "You know," he said, reaching across the table to take her hand, "I was just thinking about my sixth birthday party."
"The day we met," she said with a warm smile. "How could I forget? I was so nervous about moving to a new place."
Charles chuckled, remembering the shy little girl who had hidden behind her mother's leg. "And now look at us. Twenty-one years later, and you're still the best gift I've ever received."
YN felt tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. "I remember you asked me to come to all your future birthdays," she said, her voice thick with emotion.
"And you've been here for every single one," Charles replied, his green eyes shining with love.
The weight of the ring box in Charles' pocket seemed to grow heavier, but he resisted the urge to pull it out just yet. Tonight was about celebrating. The proposal could wait for another perfect moment.
"I don't know what I did to deserve you," he continued, "but I thank my lucky stars every day that you walked into that birthday party all those years ago. You've made every birthday since then more special than the last."
"Oh, Charles," she whispered, tears now flowing freely down her cheeks. "You've given me more than I ever dreamed possible. That little girl who was so scared of not fitting in found her home in you."
They came together in a kiss that was soft and sweet, yet filled with the depth of their shared history and the promise of their future. As they held each other close, both were transported back to that sunny day in Monaco, two six-year-olds making a promise of friendship that had blossomed into a love story for the ages.
When they finally pulled apart, Charles rested his forehead against hers, a soft smile playing on his lips. "So," he said, his voice light but filled with emotion, "think you might stick around for a few more birthdays?"
YN laughed, the sound like music to Charles' ears. "Just try and keep me away, Leclerc. You're stuck with me for all your birthdays, forever and always."
As they finished their dinner, Charles felt the ring box in his pocket once more. Soon, he thought, he'd ask her to make it official, to promise him not just all his birthdays, but every day in between.
But for now, he was content to bask in the glow of their love, celebrating not just his 27th birthday, but the incredible journey they'd shared.

The groan of the rusty âstolenâ car door echoed in the woods like a death knell. You slammed it shut with a wince, the throbbing ache in your shoulder protesting the movement as you placed your bag on it. The vehicle now lay crumpled against a giant redwood, a testament to the gigantic beast you'd just barely managed to outrun before Percy took take of it with Anaklusmos.
And him, ever the optimist, managed a weak attempt at sarcasm. "Well, that went great, don´t you think?" he muttered to you, his voice laced with exhaustion. A fresh cut adorned his cheek, a reminder of his near-death experience, from their recent encounter.
Luke, face dirty and torso sweaty, slammed the trunk shut with a finality that mirrored the exhaustion etched on his face. Dirt smudged his usually perfect features, and sweat plastered his black hair to his forehead, a sight that would have sent shivers down the spine of any other girl at camp. On you, however, it just fueled the simmering fire inside you that made you want to punch his face.
He slung his worn backpack over one shoulder, the weight of responsibility and fatigue pulling him down.
"Remind me not to let you drive again. Ever." he said to you, his voice laced with a mocking lilt.
You rolled your eyes, the familiar irritation sparking within you. "Oh, give me a break" you spat back, hands on your hips. "I'm the only one with a license here, genius."
"Is your license useful when it comes to a stolen car, genius?" he replied, voice lowering to match his mockery and a punchable smirk playing on his lips. He really knew how to push your buttons, even when you were both staring down the barrel of another night on the run, another night without a decent meal or a good night's sleep.
"At least I can drive" you countered, ignoring the prickle of annoyance that ran down your spine. "Besides, who else would have gotten us this far? You?" You gestured towards the flickering neon sign of a ramshackle motel in the distance, a beacon of hope in the gathering darkness.
"Enough" Annabeth said, her voice firm despite the tiredness in her tone. "You two can fight later, but right now, we need to find somewhere to stay. I am not spending another night sleeping on a tree"
With a determined stomp, she marched towards the side of the road. You and Luke both took a step forward at the same time, then stopped, locked in a silent battle of who would yield. You mockingly straightened your arm towards Annabeth's path. "Ladies first" you said to him.
He squinted his eyes playfully as he walked past you. âVery matureâ he muttered.
The flickering neon sign cut through the twilight like a neon lifeline as you walked. âThe Sun n' Sands Motelâ proclaimed in faded glory, the letters crooked and the sun sporting a single, sad-looking ray. It wasn't the exactly luxury, but after days on the run, a crumpled car, and a near-death encounter with a creature straight out of your worst nightmares, this place looked like a five-star resort.
"Finally" you sighed, relief washing over you in waves. You could practically smell the promise of clean sheets and a bed that didn't groan ominously with every movement. And a shower. Gods, you craved that.
Pushing open the glass door, you were greeted with a musty scent that hung in the air like a forgotten memory. The lobby was small and poorly decorated, the faded floral wallpaper clashing horrendously with the worn brown carpeting. Behind a chipped counter sat a woman whose age defied easy categorization. Her hair, the color of tarnished silver, was pulled back in a tight bun, emphasizing the deep lines etched around her eyes. She sat engrossed in a beauty magazine, oblivious to the four weary demigods who had just entered.
With a sigh that condensed the exhaustion of your entire journey, you approached the counter. Slamming a wad of crumpled bills onto the counter, you declared, "Rooms for four, please."
Percy shuffled behind you, his eyes flitting around the room with a mix of curiosity and apprehension. Annabeth scanned the lobby for any signs of potential danger, her hand instinctively resting on the hilt of her dagger.
The woman finally looked up, her gaze lingering on you for too long before flickering to the rest of your group. A slow smile played on her lips, a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "One room, two beds?" she drawled, her voice thick with a southern twang that seemed to grate on your already frayed nerves.
"Two rooms" you corrected, forcing a smile that felt more like a grimace. Sharing a room with Luke Castellan, a roof, again, even in this desolate outpost, was an idea so abhorrent you couldn't entertain it for a second.
As if sensing your objection, the woman tapped away at a dusty computer terminal. A smirk played on her lips. "Couple's getaway, huh?" she asked, her eyes darting from Luke, back to you.
Percy and Annabeth exchanged a surprised and disgusted look. "What?" you demanded, your irritation bubbling over.
But before you could react, you felt Luke´s heavy arm slunging casually around your shoulder, his voice dripping with mock sincerity. "Looks like we're gonna have to get a little bit cozy, don't you think, baby?" he drawled playfully.
You gritted your teeth, biting down on the inside of your cheek to keep from exploding. You knew perfectly well he was just trying to get under your skin, and the worst part was, it was working. The thought of sharing a room with him was bad enough, but the idea of him calling you "baby" sent shivers down your spine â not of pleasure, but of pure, unadulterated annoyance.
Faking a sickly sweet smile, you leaned in and delivered a sharp elbow jab directly to his stomach. He doubled over with a groan, clutching his center for a moment. "Call me 'baby' again," you hissed, your voice low and dangerous, "and I'll punch way lower than that."
âGot it, musclesâ he wheezed.
The receptionist, clearly enjoying the spectacle, leaned back in her chair and tapped away at the computer again. "Right now, we have one room with a double bed, and another one with two single beds" she explained.
You glanced back at Annabeth, a silent question hanging in the air. She nodded in understanding. Two single beds might not be ideal, but it was infinitely preferable to sharing a room with Luke.
"We'll take them" you declared.
The woman expertly counted the money, her lips pursed in concentration. "Rooms thirteen and fifteen." she announced, handing you two keys. "No smoking inside, and do not break anything, or you'll be charged double" the lady continued, her voice laced with a warning that was clearly aimed at you and Luke.
As you all four walked towards the stairs, you tossed the key to room fifteen at Luke. He snatched it reflexively in the air, a hint of confussion in his face. âBoys, you´ll share a roomâ you declare.
Luke scoffed behind your back. "What are we? Eleven?" he asked.
"It was a nightmare to drive a car with you in it" you retorted, "can't imagine what it would be like to share a room."
Later, after some questionable inspectioning around the room and re-organizing your bag for when you leave tomorrow morning, you finally had a little time to yourself.
The cool water splashed against your face, washing away the grime and exhaustion of the day. You glanced over at Annabeth, who was meticulously placing her most important things on the floor to clean and organize her bag; her dagger, her cap, a rope, a squished water bottle, and a few maps. Despite the cramped confines of the motel room, a sense of peace settled over you. Even with Luke's irritating presence hanging over your head, it was a welcome change from the constant fear and adrenaline that had fueled your journey.
A sharp rapping on the door snapped you out of your reverie. "Coming!" Annabeth called out. She opened the door just a crack as you peeked your head out of the tiny bathroom door. You were greeted by the sight of a very smug-looking Percy. His cheeks were puffed out, and he was clutching a brown paper bag that seemed precariously close to bursting.
"Uh, hey" he mumbled, his voice muffled through a mouthful of something chocolatey. "I raided the vending machine downstairsâ he simply explained.
Annabeth turned towards you. âDinner?â she asked.
The offer of a snack, however meager, was enough to send your stomach grumbling in protest. The idea of a proper meal sounded heavinly, the food from camp, the meat, the mashed potatoes. Gods, you really wanted to be back. But right now, even the greasiest bag of chips could be enough for you.
Percy shoved his way past Annabeth and into the room. He disgorged his loot onto the small bedside table that sat between your beds. Annabeth, with her usual organizational skills, started to create a semblance of order from the chaotic pile of snacks.
Across the room, you noticed Luke still leaning against the doorway. He had shed his usual polished exterior for a pair of worn sweatpants and a plain t-shirt, a sight that momentarily threw you off balance. He took you in with a lazy glance, his eyes lingering on your tired face and messy hair. "Looking good" he called, a smirk playing on his lips.
One of your eyes twitched in irritation. Grabbing the wet towel you'd been using, you flung it at him with a growl. He managed to snag it out of the air just before it connected with his face.
"Hilarious" he remarked.
Annabeth jumped in before the playful hostility could escalate further. "How about a movie?" she suggested, her voice laced with a hint of forced cheer.
The idea wasn't exactly appealing, but the prospect of some semblance of downtime outweighed the absurdity of watching television in a dingy motel room. You and Luke exchanged a glance, a silent agreement passing between you. You didn't know how much peace you could get in the middle of a mission, or for how long, but the idea of just sitting down and eating calmly while watching a movie was undeniably tempting. Even with the dubious snacks and the cramped quarters, it felt like a small oasis in the storm of your current situation.
The movie selection on the ancient TV was limited, to say the least. After a series of disgruntled grumbles and channel surfing, they settled on a cheesy romance movie with a plot that could have been predicted by a hyperactive squirrel. The acting was atrocious, the dialogue predictable, and the special effects looked like they were created by a bored teenager with basic editing software. Yet, despite the movie's inherent ridiculousness, a strange sense of camaraderie filled the room. Laughter, albeit tinged with exhaustion, erupted at the predictable plot twists and overly dramatic dialogue.
As the minutes ticked by, Percy and Annabeth succumbed to the fatigue of the day. Annabeth curled up by your side on her bed, but her eyelids eventually fluttered shut and her head lolled back against your shoulder. Percy managed to stay up for a little longer with Luke, but his snorting could easily be heard just ten minutes after.
Silence stretched between you and Luke, punctuated only by the rhythmic snores of Percy and the occasional sigh from Annabeth in her sleep. You glanced over at your friend, her head resting peacefully against your shoulder. Despite the discomfort of the shared bed and the dubious snacks, a sliver of normalcy felt oddly comforting.
Across from you, Luke mirrored your posture, leaning back against the headboard with his arms crossed. His gaze was fixed on the flickering television screen, but you knew his attention wasn't on the atrocious movie. He was lost in thought, a furrow etched between his brows.
There was tension in the air, a constant undercurrent simmering between you two. You didn't like each other, that much was certain. He was arrogant, self-serving, and his loyalty always seemed to have a price tag attached. Yet, a grudging respect had grown between you over the years. You both understood the weight of your responsibilities, the burden of protecting those younger, more innocent.
He cleared his throat, the sound sharp in the quiet room. "Hey, Perâ" he began, his voice a low murmur.
âHeyâ you called. Luke´s head snapped towards your direction. "He's been out for more than half an hour" you interjected softly, your voice barely above a whisper. "Don't wake him up."
Luke's head tilted to the side. Confusion flickered across his brown eyes before settling on a scowl. "What?" he hissed, barely louder than a whisper.
"Think about it" you countered, your voice a low murmur that wouldn't disturb the sleeping teens. "Percy's been snoring like a miniature thunderstorm for at least ten minutes. Annabeth wouldn't wake up even if a centaur stepped next to her right now. Waking them up would just cause a monster of a different kind."
You knew Luke understood. You weren't just talking about Percy's physical exhaustion. You were both keenly aware of the burden these young demigods carried. They craved normalcy as much as anyone, and these stolen moments of peaceful sleep, however fleeting, were a precious commodity. Watching them, so vulnerable and carefree in their slumber, filled you with a fierce protectiveness. The last thing you wanted to do was disrupt that.
Luke didn't reply, but his gaze mirrored your sentiments. A flicker of something akin to respect softened the harsh lines of his face. You weren't friends, not by any stretch of the imagination. Yet, you shared a common enemy and a common purpose â to protect those who couldn't protect themselves.
The silence stretched for a momento before he cleared his throat again, the sound sharp in the cramped room. "So," he drawled, his voice laced with a hint of resignation, "what do we do then?"
You sighed, frustration creeping into your voice. "Guess we're stuck sharing a room after all" you muttered, throwing your hands up in defeat. The idea was far from appealing.
Luke's face contorted in horror. He let out a theatrical whine that would rival any crying toddler. "Oh come on" he whined, stretching the word into several syllables. "Sharing a room with you? Talk about cruelty and punishment."
âOh, just shut upâ you whispered-yelled at him. âTrust me, I don´t wanna sleep next to you either. I´ll build up a wall of pillows before you can even start snoringâ
There was a certain absurdity to the situation, being forced to share a room with your least favorite person. But beneath the surface, you both acknowledged the unspoken truth â the safety and well-being of Percy and Annabeth took precedence over any personal discomfort.
You both rose from your beds, a tense air crackling around you. Picking up your backpack, you hoisted it over your shoulder with a sigh. "Alright" you declared, marching towards the door. "Let's get this over with."
Luke followed, his movements mirroring yours. The walk down the cramped hallway was filled with an tension. Neither of you dared to speak. Reaching his door, Luke fumbled for the key, his irritation evident in his clumsiness. Finally, with a click, the door swung open, revealing a room identical to yours â basic, cramped, and thoroughly unappealing.
Stepping inside, you couldn't help but let out a groan. A single, double bed dominated the room, leaving absolutely no room for separate sleeping arrangements. God, why did Percy have to fall asleep? Why didn´t you and Annabeth pick this room earlier? Everything was going the wrong way for you. You exchanged a look with Luke, the message clear in your burning eyes.
"Snort or drool" Luke began, his voice a low growl as he pointed a finger at you "and I swear I'll throw you out the window"
"Hm, how charming" you replied sarcastically, stepping past him and into the room.
The bed loomed before you, a battleground for an uncomfortable night's sleep. With a sigh, you dropped your backpack onto the nearest chair. Luke began building a formidable fortress of pillows in the center of the bed. You rolled your eyes at the sight. This was so ridiculous.
A glance at your watch confirmed your suspicions. It was not too late to hop on quick shower. Percy and Luke walked down to the vending machine so quickly earlier that you didn´t even have time to wash yourself before they came to your room with the so called dinner. Your clothes clung to you uncomfortably, the grime of the day begging to be washed away. You looked for a clean shirt you were sure you packed before leaving camp days ago. The possibilites of a shower were low in missions like these, but you never knew.
Leaving your backpack open on the chair, you made your way to the bathroom door, silently pushing it open. Luke watched your movements for a fleeting moment, but quickly went back to his pillow fortification once your figure disappeared inside the small bathroom. He didn't think much of it at first. You were just getting ready for the night, whatever your methods.
Inside the bathroom, you began stripping off your clothes, the cool air a welcome sensation against your heated skin. In your state of exhaustion, you neglected to fully close the bathroom door. A foolish mistake, perhaps, but in your defense, the room was tiny and the it wouldn't be winning any awards for spaciousness. Right now, all you craved was a chance to scrub away the road dust and find a clean shirt for the âuncomfortableâ night ahead.
A few seconds later, a muffled curse broke the silence on Luke´s side. Luke, realizing he'd left his toothbrush in the bathroom, stopped himself from the pillows task and approached the bathroom door. He was expecting it to be shut. A polite knock, a request for his forgotten toothbrush â that was the plan. But as he drew closer, his steps faltered. The door wasn't shut.
âSeriously!?â
There you stood, completely devoid of clothes except for your underwear, taking off your camp´s necklace and your earrings. The warm glow from the bathroom light accentuated the smooth lines of your shoulders and the curve of your back. Time seemed to freeze for a beat. Luke's breath hitched in his throat.
You whirled around, startled. A small laugh escaped your lips as you saw Luke's flustered expression. His cheeks were flushed a deep crimson, and his brown eyes darted around the room as if searching for an escape route.
"Didn't think you'd be so shy, Luke" It was a playful jab, a way to lighten the sudden tension that had filled the small space.
Luke sputtered, his voice barely even a regular tone. "Shy? I'm not-, I mean-âŚâ he kept cutting himself off. âThis-, don´t you know what privacy is!?"
His indignation was adorable, you couldn't help but think to yourself. You'd never seen him so flustered, so utterly out of sorts. A mischievous glint sparked in your eyes.
"Oh, come on" you countered, a playful smile tugging at the corners of your lips. "Don't tell me you've never seen a girl in this state before."
The question just didn´t have an asnwer. Luke's mouth clamped shut. His eyes widened for a moment, then darted back down to the floor, avoiding your gaze. There was a flicker of something in his eyes â a memory, perhaps, or a realization â but it vanished as quickly as it appeared.
The silence stretched, thick and awkward. You realized you had hit a nerve, a part of Luke you hadn't expected to expose, not in front of you. A pang of unexpected curiosity pricked at your insides. Just what kind of experiences had this arrogant, self-assured perfect golden boy had?
You opened your mouth to speak, to maybe apologize for your teasing, but Luke beat you to it.
"Just shower and get dressed, okay?" he mumbled, his voice tight with suppressed frustration. "I want to sleep."
He didn't wait for a reply, simply turning on his heel and retreating back to his pillow fort. You watched him go, a smile playing on your lips. The encounter had been unexpected, to say the least, but it had definitely shaken things up.
A low chuckle escaped your lips. "You'll wait for me?" you called out playfully, knowing full well he wouldn't answer.
"Shut up!" came his muffled reply from behind the pillows.
The silence in the cramped room was thick enough to spread. You emerged from the bathroom, a clean shirt clinging to your damp form and a towel wrapped around your head like a makeshift turban. You caught sight of Luke burrowed deep beneath the barricade of pillows, a picture of forced nonchalance. His eyes were resolutely fixed on the ceiling, but you could practically feel the heat radiating off him.
A mischievous glint flickered in your eyes. He might have gotten away with a verbal escape route earlier, but you weren't done yet. "Well, aren't you going to say something?" you queried, amusement dancing in your voice. "Speechless, Castellan? That's a first."
Luke remained stubbornly silent, his jaw clenched tight. He could feel the blush creeping back up his neck, a burning reminder of his moment of weakness. How was he supposed to act normal after seeing...well, after seeing more of you than he ever bargained for? The image of your smooth skin and the graceful curve of your back was burned into his memory, a stark contrast to the sarcastic warrior he knew.
You flopped down onto the bed, the makeshift wall of pillows separating you from Luke. You turned off the bedside lamp in silence before removing the towel off your hair, gently brushing it. The silence stretched on, broken only by the soft rustle of your brush. Just as you thought Luke had successfully retreated into a silent sulk, his voice broke through the tension.
"Look" he muttered, whispering "it was an accident. Just forget it, alright?"
You couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle. "Oh, come on" you teased, leaning back against the pillows. "Didnât expect that seeing a little skin was such a big deal for someone like you."
Luke shot you a glare, but it lacked its usual bite. Someone like him? What the hell did you mean by that? Maybe it was the unexpectedness of it all, or maybe it was the way the dim light had cast your figure in a different light, one he hadn't noticed before. Whatever it was, it had thrown him completely off balance.
A sudden, and quite unwelcome, thought struck him. Just what kind of experiences had you had? He knew you weren't naive, or dumb. But the thought of you with someone else⌠the possessiveness that flared up within him surprised him. It wasn't jealousy, not exactly, but a strange sense he couldn't quite explain.
He pushed the thought aside, focusing on calming his racing heart. He needed sleep, not a philosophical debate about his feelings for his least favorite demigod. Just as he was about to drift off, your voice sliced through the silence, sharper than any blade.
"Are you a virgin, Luke?"
The question hung in the air, a verbal bombshell that shattered the fragile peace. Luke's eyes snapped open, wide with disbelief. Gods, you were bold. He stared at you in the dark, lifiting his head up just enough to peak from the pillows in between your boides, his mind struggling to process your words.
"What?" he finally managed, his voice husky with disbelief.
A faint blush crept up your cheeks, a stark contrast to the playful glint in your eyes. "You heard me" you countered.
Luke felt a surge of annoyance mixed with a strange vulnerability. He wasn't used to being caught off guard, especially not by you. He opened his mouth to retort, to deflect the question with his usual sarcastic wit, but the words wouldn't come.
His gaze drifted towards the wall, a silent battle raging within him. Should he answer your question honestly? The thought of revealing such a personal detail to you, his nemesis, was unappealing. But then again, a small part of him, the part he kept hidden away, craved a different kind of connection with you.
He took a deep breath, the decision made. "Does it matter?" he finally replied, his voice a low murmur.
You turned on your side, facing him across the wall of pillows, getting rid of some of them, dropping them to the carpeted floor. The moonlight filtering through the window cast an ethereal glow on your face, making your eyes seem to sparkle with mischief.
"Maybe it does" you said, your voice soft and laced with an undercurrent of something else - intrigue? Even in the darkness, you could see the way your words affected him, the way his dark eyes seemed to flicker with a mixture of emotions.
Luke opened his mouth to respond, but before he could get a word out, you cut him off with a laugh that seemed tinged with nervousness.
"Forget it" you said, shaking your head slightly. "Just... hormonal thoughts." The explanation felt flimsy, even to your own ears. This wasn't just idle curiosity; it was something deeper, something you couldn't quite explain yet.
Luke remained silent for a moment, your sudden change in direction throwing him off. Part of him was relieved you weren't pressing the issue, but another part, the part he usually kept suppressed, felt a flicker of disappointment. He wouldn't admit it, not even to himself, but he'd be lying if he said he hadn't found your boldness, your honesty, even your sudden vulnerability, strangely appealing.
"Hormonal thoughts, huh?" he finally echoed, his voice husky. "Does that mean you wanna have sex with me?" He dared to voice the possibility that you might be attracted to him. He must´ve been out of his mind.
The thought was simply impossible. Yet, the way your eyes sparkled in the moonlight, the way you'd turned towards him, discarding some of the pillows as if to bridge the gapâŚ
"No!" you blurted out, as if reading his mind. The defensiveness in your voice surprised you both. "It's not that at all. It's just... I don't know." Frustration laced your words. This whole conversation was turning into a confusing mess. âJust⌠how far have you reached with a girl?â
Luke stared at you, dumbfounded. This night had taken a turn he hadn't anticipated. Why were you even talking about this? Why were you asking these questions? Why, despite the initial irritation, was he finding himself answering?
Heaving a sigh, he sat up against the headboard, exhaustion finally catching up to him. "Not too far, actually" he mumbled, the words laced with a weariness that surprised him. The words felt strange coming out of his mouth, a confession he wouldn't have made to anyone else. He hadn't meant to dwell on past experiences, especially not with you. He hadn't realized how much he'd carried on his shoulders, the weight of overlooked desires he never truly got to satisfy. Suddenly, the frustration in your voice clicked into place. Was that why you'd asked? Was it because you felt the same way, burdened by an unfulfilled yearning?
But as you shifted in your bed, suddenly sitting up on your knees, he couldn't help but notice the way your silhouette was illuminated by the moonlight. And then he saw it â the lack of shorts beneath your t-shirt, a detail he'd managed to conveniently overlook in the heat of the moment, which didn´t make sense at all.
"What are youâ?" he began, the question dying on his lips as you moved closer. You began to dismantle the remaining wall of pillows, clearing the way between you.
His heart hammered against his ribs as you sat down on his lap, one leg on each side of him. You were close, closer than you'd ever been before. A mix of confusion and arousal that left him speechless. You stared at him, your eyes reflecting the soft moonlight, as your hands reached for his.
"Have you ever done this?" you asked, your voice gentle, devoid of the usual sarcasm you wielded like a weapon. You weren't mocking him, weren't trying to pry. This was a genuine question, a moment of surprising intimacy that neither of you could have predicted.
Luke stared at you, his mind reeling. His hands, usually quick and confident, felt heavy and clumsy under your touch. You guided them to hold steady of your thighs, even though you were not moving, not yet.
Luke had never been more confused in his life. His mind raced, searching for a coherent response, an appropriate action. Was this a trap? A test? 'What the hell?' his mind raced.
But as he looked into your eyes, searching for an explanation, all he saw was a reflection of his own thunderstorm. You were just as confused as he was, caught in a moment of unexpected intimacy.
Neither of you knew what to say, what to do next. This wasn't part of the plan. You were supposed to be enemies, rivals forced to share a cramped motel room.
You know, the classic shit.
But this wasnât it. This was something strange that even though he hated to admit it, he didnât want it to end yet.
So he trailed his hands higher. Higher, higher, higher. Then placed his hands on your hips. He was breathless, and a sudden feeling of dumbness filled his insides as he stared at you, reading you like a book; you were waiting. And he had no idea what to do.
But you surely did. A slight sway of your hips was all he needed to breath out the amount of air his chest was holding. Then another one, and another; each movement pressed deliciously against his cock, already hardened.
He let out a deep groan, teeth tightening and head falling back slightly.
You placed your hands around his shoulders, pulling him closer to you, almost chest to chest. Your hips kept rolling over him. If this felt good to him, it mustâve feel like heaven to you, due to your lack of lower clothes.
âYouâre big, Lukeâ you whispered, a tiny smirk smudged along your lips. There it was. You again.
He thanked the darkness for hiding his red cheeks, but his state was not going to make him vulnerable again. He gripped your hips tighter, pulling at the top of your ass towards him over and over. âFuck, just shut up for five minutesâ he breathed out.
You didnât answer. Your mouth hang open over his own. Your lips were dangerously close to touching, to kissing. But it was not gonna happen. As your hips rolled at a fast pace his breath tangled with yours, his moans, his groans, everything was swallowed by your own sounds.
He should feel embarrassed of behaving like this, not only because it is you but because heâs supposed to be in the middle of a mission. But come on, he knew this would happen soon or later.
All those years in which he secretly saved his feeling for himself. He had to hide the fact that whenever he touched your skin, whenever he felt your warm body against his hands, even the slightest and most teasing touch, a bolt of lighting went from the tip of his toes to his head.
He felt drunk in you in just a second and what, because he accidentally saw you almost naked?
He had to thank the gods for his luck.
âOh, Lukeâ you moaned, head tilting back as you squeezed your eyes shut. Oh, he liked that.
He audibly chucked, laughed at you. âWho wouldâve known?â he asked. âWho wouldâve known youâd be so dirty, baby?â
Your eyes sparkled with fire, piercing Lukeâs insides as the scar on his face twitched like every time he smiled. Despite the look on your face, your hips kept rolling over his; you couldnât stop. It felt too good, too hot, too wet, even under Lukeâs sweatpants.
âDonât call me babyâ you managed to blurt out, but the sound coming out of your mouth just made the whole sentence something pornographic. Luke didnât complain.
You removed your hands from his neck. He was convinced you were gonna climb off of him and he would have to apologize repeatedly so he could finally get to cum with you on top of him; but instead, your hands travelled down his torso, and hid under his white shirt, pressing your palms onto his abs, pushing your own body harder against his.
âWhat should I call you then?â he whispered against your mouth, hands gripping impossibly tighter, finally gripping to your asscheeks. He had to hide a groan from the very back of his throat. âBunny? âCause you canât deny you wanna hop on my cock?â
Now that was new.
If you were shocked, your face wouldnât show it, but your body surely did. Your movements became sloppy, tired, and your chest moved up and down faster than ever. Luke rolled his own hips into yours, moaning uncontrollably at the feeling of his cock being constantly rubbed under your clothes pussy, and at the sight of the small wet patch you had on your underwear.
âLuke. I wanna cumâ you moaned out. He liked that you didnât warn you were going to, but you wanted to. As if you were asking for his permission.
âYou wonât get off me until I cum, get it?â
He was a possessed man all of a sudden. His groans, growing deeper with every movement, his hands holding onto you for dear life and his breath twirling with yours as if you were the oxygen he needed to stay alive.
The tight feeling on your belly snapped as fast as you started to feel it. Yet you were obedient, so you kept moving.
The overstimulation was too much already, but when was gonna be the last time you would get to almost fuck Luke Castellan? Probably this time, you wouldnât want to screw it up.
In fact, you wanted to do so much more. To suck his dick, to gag on it. To let him play with your body as much as he pleased and craved for. To let him take you anywhere and anytime he liked.
It didnât take Luke long enough to hit his climax too, thankfully. His hips twitched against yours repeatedly as he placed his forehead on your chest. His breath was heavy as if he had run a million miles, his forehead sweaty.
Your hand reached his curls, smoothly running them down the back of his neck as if you were comforting him from the worst experience he had ever had. Little did you know this was his best so far.
âDo we-,â he cut himself off to swallow thickly. He didnât realize how dry his throat was until he tried to speak. âDo we get to share rooms again?â
âWhat do you think?â

âa little more to the left.â
you huffed impatiently, moving the banner over to the left by just a smidge.
âtoo far,â jay said. âmore to the right.â
you groaned, setting the banner down all together and climbing down from the ladder.
âi canât believe youâre making me hang decorations for your party,â you guffawed. âwhat do i even get out of helping you?â
âyou get to go to the party, duh,â your brother replied, grabbing the banner and climbing up the ladder himself.
âwell i assumed that was a given considering i live here,â you retorted.
âwell iâm not afraid to kick you to the curb if you donât start getting the snacks ready,â jay responded.
rolling your eyes, you opened the refrigerator and started pulling out ingredients for the snack plate you were assigned to make for tonight. once you pulled out all the ingredients, you pulled out your phone, checking for a notification you hadnât received.
âso,â you started, tucking your phone back away and trying to hide your disappointment, âare all your friends gonna be here tonight? like, all of them?â
jay was focused on stapling the banner in place, his eyebrows furrowed together in concentration.
âyeah, of course,â he responded, only half paying attention to you.
that was the only answer you needed though. it meant heeseung would be at the party tonight. heeseung, who fucked you in your bed the other night and then hadnât contacted you a single time since.
youâd been glued to your phone, checking nonstop and waiting for him to text you, call you, like your instagram picture, anything. yet heâd been silent, and that crushed you.
seeing him tonight at the party scared you. would he ignore you? would he pretend nothing ever happened between you guys?
you had no idea what to expect, and you were terrified.
-
the party was in full blast. yours and jayâs shared apartment was more packed than youâd ever seen it before.
it was nearing midnight and youâd still yet to see heeseung. in fact, you hadnât seen him or any of jayâs immediate friend group, which also included jake and sunghoon. you were relieved, but also anxious that he could appear in front of you at any moment.
you were in the kitchen fixing yourself a drink to help calm some of your anxieties when suddenly you heard the front door open, close, and then a loud eruption of cheers and conversation. the loudness and excitement of it all was enough to make your heart start thumping fast in your chest.
then you heard their voices, but it was too late for you to run out of the kitchen because there they were, walking right over to where you were at the drink station.
âhey, y/n,â jake greeted, pulling you into a tight hug.
your face was pressed against his chest, momentarily allowing you to catch your breath. you had to think fast about how you were going to approach heeseung.
âhey,â you replied, forcing a smile once you pulled back.
sunghoon greeted you next, ruffling your hair in a playful manner. you then turned to heeseung, who made eye contact with you, and then turned the other way to grab a drink, not saying a word.
you gulped, looking down at the floor. a wave of sadness overcame you because what he just did was all you needed to see to understand that he did regret what you two did, and now he wanted nothing to do with you.
you walked out of the kitchen and beelined straight for your bedroom. you didnât want to leave the party, but you just needed a moment to collect yourself.
you little moment of peace ended up taking 30 minutes. it took you a while to muster up the courage to go back out there, but eventually you did.
the party had died down slightly, making it easier for you to walk down the hall and back into the main living space.
you took in your surroundings, first noticing your brother on the couch with an unfamiliar girl in his lap. a few feet away from them, sunghoon was dancing with some girl, and jake was playing beer pong with a group of people. heeseung was nowhere to be found.
your hopes were raised. you thought he mustâve left if he wasnât around any of his friends.
with a slight hop in your step, you entered the kitchen to nibble on the snack plate youâd made earlier in the day. as you ate, you looked out the kitchen window which had a direct view of the balcony, and there he was.
he was standing outside by himself. his back was turned to you, but you knew it was him. he was leaning over the balcony railing, staring ahead at the city in front of him.
you werenât sure what came over you. the alcohol, or maybe the rage that came with the fact he had been blatantly ignoring you after what occurred between you two the other night. but suddenly, you were opening the balcony door and joining him outside in the crisp late-fall air.
he turned around upon hearing the door slide open and was visibly surprised to find you standing there. it was unlike you to confront him, to confront anyone, but you were angry. you felt used and you wanted an explanation.
âoh,â he said. âhey.â
for a moment, you didnât know what to say. you cursed how attractive he was in that moment because itâd rendered you speechless.
âhey,â you responded.
âhow are you?â he asked.
âmaybe youâd know if youâd bothered to text me,â you snapped.
you were shocked with yourself as soon as the words left your mouth. heeseung looked shocked for a moment as well, but then the guilt set in and took over his face.
âiâm sorry, y/n,â he sighed, leaning onto the balcony again. you crossed your arms and waited impatiently for whatever excuse he was going to pull. âi wanted to text you, i justâŚi got scared.â
âscared?â you repeated. âwhatâs so scary about me?â
ânothing,â heeseung said, turning his head to look at you. he then smiled a bit and shook his head. âthereâs nothing scary at all about youâŚexcept the fact that i feel like i betrayed jay by sleeping with you.â
âhe doesnât know,â you assured.
âi know,â he replied, sighing. âthatâs the bad part. iâm keeping this huge secret from him and i know heâll be pissed if he finds out.â
âmaybe not,â you shrugged.
heeseung gave you a look, which was deserved because not even you believed yourself. he was right in that jay would be very angry to find out heeseung had sex with you.
âwell, you couldâve told me that instead of saying nothing,â you uttered quietly. âit felt like you just used me for what you wanted and then tossed me out when you were done.â
âno no no,â he hurriedly shook his head, planting his hands firmly on your arms and looking directly into your eyes. âthat is not what happened, i promise you. i wanted to text you so bad and then when i saw you earlier tonight i just freaked out and didnât know what to do. iâm so sorry, y/n.â
it was hard not for you to immediately forgive him with the way he was pleading to you and looking into your eyes so thoughtfully. you gulped, forcing your gaze on the ground.
âwhat now?â you asked.
âwhat do you mean?â he wondered, his hands still gripping your arms.
âare we ever gonnaâŚâ you trailed off, too embarrassed to speak.
âgonna what?â he asked, his thumbs starting to caress your skin. âdo it again?â
you nodded shyly.
âdo you wanna do it again?â he asked.
âiâi meanâyeah,â you sputtered out.
the corners of his lips turned upwards at that.
âcome on, baby, letâs go for a drive.â
-
you werenât entirely sure how you got in this position, how you ended up shirtless in the back of heeseungâs car dry humping his lap. but there you were, and you were already a moaning mess.
his hands were all over you, stroking and feeling your warm, smooth skin. he kissed your neck while your clothed lower half ground down on him.
he rolled his neck up to look at your face. it was somewhat difficult to see the details of your face in the darkness of the night and the darkness of the random deserted parking lot you were parked in. but he could see your eyes, your starry, glistening eyes.
âhow are you this pretty?â he whispered, looking at you in pure awe.
you blushed, hiding your face in his chest. he rubbed your back, his entire body feeling like it was engulfed in flames, and then he really knew for sure that he had a real, genuine crush on his best friendâs sister.
you shifted off his lap, much to his disliking, and planted your hand on his bulge. he bit his lip, watching you stroke his outline over his pants. you smiled, watching the way his breathing got heavier even though youâd hardly touched him yet.
âheeseung,â you said, slowly sliding your hand into his jeans.
âyeah?â he whispered, wrapping his arm around your shoulder.
âi want you to fuck me in this car,â you told him, biting your lip to hold back your excited smile.
heeseung nearly fainted. you were so not the shy innocent thing he thought you were. you were lewd when you were turned on and he loved it. the more time he spent around you, the more perfect he discovered you were.
âfuck,â he swallowed, nodding. âokay. iâll fuck you, baby. iâll fuck my sweet girl as much as she wants.â
he hurriedly unbuttoned his jeans and tugged them down his legs, which was a lot harder than it shouldâve been in the tight confines of his car.
eventually, he was left in his boxers. he watched as you pulled your own pants down, and once you were left in your underwear, he pulled you back into his lap. the lesser amount of fabric separating the two of you made it easier to feel his cock, feel how hard and heavy it was.
he leaned forward and attached his lips to your chest, sucking on your collarbones and moving down to your tits. he kissed each of your nipples, smiling against your chest at the way you shuddered and pushed your hips against his crotch, desperate for some friction where you needed it the most.
he lifted your hips up off of his lap momentarily to slide his boxers down his legs, leaving his lower half exposed. his cock, hard and eager as ever, sprang out and stood long, his tip glistening and shiny from spilled pre cum.
if the confines of the car werenât so restricting, you wouldâve leaned down and licked along his tip, getting a taste of his salty precum. instead, you trailed your fingers along his tip, gathering as much of the liquid as you could, and shoved them in your mouth, moaning at his taste.
heeseung grabbed your hips again and laid you down on his carâs leather seats. he positioned one of your legs over the back of the seat and the other one to the floor, spreading your legs the best he could in the limited space you were working with.
with your legs spread, he rubbed your clothed clit with his thumb, feeling the wetness seeping through the thin fabric of your underwear.
he pulled your panties to the side, exposing your trembling, glistening pussy to him. he traced your hole with his middle finger before sliding it in. your hole sucked him in with ease from how aroused you were, how ready and willing you were to take him.
you moaned as loudly as you wanted since he was the only one whoâd be able to hear it. you didnât have to worry about your brother finding you guys since he was too busy hosting a party and probably had no idea that you guys had even left.
heeseung immediately slid in another finger and started massaging his fingers inside you. you let out soft little whimpers as you subtly humped your hips up, trying to fuck yourself down on his fingers. he had to take a breath to calm himself down, to keep himself from busting without even touching himself. you just looked too perfect like this, spread out in the back of his car letting him finger you.
once he felt like you were stretched and prepared enough to take him, heeseung pulled his fingers out of you. they were absolutely drenched in your arousal, so much so that when he spread his fingers apart, strings of your sticky witness webbed between them.
you turned your head to the side in embarrassment, missing it when heeseung used that same, wet hand to jerk himself off for a minute, covering his cock in your arousal, to get himself ready to be inside you.
he held your panties to the side again, about to position his cock with your hole and slide right in before he stopped himself.
âyou ready, my baby?â he asked, tilting your face so you were looking at him.
âplease,â you begged. âput it in, hee.â
it was what heeseung expected you to say, but he wanted to check anyway.
he chuckled breathily and slid his cock inside you, your hole taking him in so sweetly. it was warm and wet and unbelievably tight, just like he remembered it to be from the other night.
âoh, fuck,â he groaned out as he pushed himself in as deep as he could go, stopping once he bottomed out and your pelvises were pressed together.
you closed your eyes and a dizzy smile appeared on your face. he hadnât even done a thing yet but you already felt so good, just to have him inside of you again. to have him all the way buried inside of you felt unbelievable.
âwhatâs that?â he asked, laughing softly. he tickled your cheek, making you open your eyes. âwhatâre you smiling about?â
ânothing,â you shook your head, refusing to tell him what had you smiling.
âyou feelinâ good?â he wondered, rubbing your thigh assuringly.
you nodded. âneed you to move.â
heeseung complied immediately, slowly pulling his cock out nearly all the way and pushing it back in. your walls enveloped him, stretching around his length and taking him like you were made for it.
his thrusts picked up quickly. you barely needed time to adjust since you were so wet and so absolutely needy for him. so, when he started fucking you hard enough that the car was shaking, you didnât complain at all.
in fact, you were practically crying from the pleasure. moan after moan and curse after curse and whine after pleasured whine tumbled past your lips, so fucked out and far gone already.
heeseung held your thighs as he slammed his cock in and out of you, alternating between watching his cock disappear in and out of you and looking up at your pretty face. he opted for your face because your eyes were watery and your nose and cheeks were red, and you were even starting to drool, and it was the most beautiful sight heâd ever seen. he was ruining you.
âf-feels so fucking good, heeseung,â you sobbed.
âyeah?â he said, suddenly pulling out.
you frowned up at him for suddenly putting a stop to your immense pleasure. to just pull out so suddenly like that, you almost got mad.
he took ahold of his cock in his hand and pressed it down against your pussy, grinding his hips back and forth and rubbing it along your slick folds. it felt so heavy on your pussy, so long and hard and perfect for you.
âohâŚâ you moaned out, watching his cock rub on your pussy.
he leaned down, unable to go a second longer without kissing you. you shoved your tongue into his mouth and he immediately rubbed his against yours, exchanging an excess amount of saliva.
âput your head back,â he commanded.
you tilted your head back, watching in fascination as he let a wad of spit slowly trickle from his mouth and land on your awaiting tongue. you swallowed it with a moan, pressing his warm body down onto yours. you wanted to be as close to him as possible. you wanted to feel his skin on your skin and never let him go.
âyouâre so fucking hot,â you said, running your fingers through his fluffy hair.
heeseung left you with a peck on your lips before sitting back up so he could get back into the position of fucking you again.
kneeling, he re-entered you, sighing from how fucking good it felt every time. every time he first slid into you, it felt magical.
he began thrusting even quicker than before, licking his thumb before bringing it down to rub your clit. you moaned pathetically, your legs starting to shake and your toes starting to curl from the added pleasure.
âoh f-fuck, hee,â you cried out. âmmm, donât stop! please please please!â
he could tell you were getting closer by your gummy walls clenching impossibly tight around him and your desperate words. luckily for you, he had no intention of stopping, only going harder.
he plummeted his cock into you, his tip hitting spots of you that were almost uncomfortably deep, but not quite.
you were shaking and writhing beneath him and he kept going and going, needing to see you cum because he knew it was going to be harder than any other time heâd witnessed before.
âhee,â you sobbed. âiâm gonna fucking cum. please, oh fuck!â
your legs tightened around his waist and your eyes rolled into the back of your head. your mouth opened in a silent scream as you started cumming around his dick and on his thumb, which was still rapidly fingering your clit.
âgoddamn,â he growled, feeling the knot in his own stomach hint at unraveling.
you just looked too fucking unreal when you came. a tear trickled out of your eye, drool sliding shamelessly down your chin. you were such a perfect mess, he needed to fuck you full of his cum.
âoh, my sweet baby girl,â he said, still pounding you despite how hard you just came. âiâm gonna fuck you so full of my load, angel. you want that? you wanna feel all full of myâfuckâfull of my cum? you wanna be filled, baby?â
âplease, hee!â you begged, nails clawing down his back. âcum inside me, please. need it so bad.â
with a few more thrusts, heeseung finally stilled inside you and you could feel his warmth filling you up. streams of his cum overflowed inside you and you felt euphoric as you laid there and took it all for him.
he had his eyes shut tightly as he lightly thrusted his hips, riding out his orgasm and forcing out as much cum as he could. his grip on you was painfully tight, but you wouldnât dare stop him now, not when he was cumming so beautifully.
he regretfully pulled out of you a moment later, watching in exhaustion and awe as his creamy white cum came spilling out of your used hole. he moved your underwear back to cover your pussy, watching the way his cum seeped through the fabric and spilled out the sides.
âfuck,â he muttered. âso messy ân pretty.â
he rubbed his fingers over the wet fabric, sliding them up and down your puffy folds. you moaned out, setting your hand on his wrist to stop him.
âsorry,â he said with a tired smile.
he handed you your clothes and while you got dressed, he dressed himself as well. there was cum all over his leather seats, but he would have to deal with that at another time.
âcâmere,â he urged once you were both finally calmed down.
you let him wrap his arm around you and kiss the top of your head, leaning into his shoulder tiredly.
âyou did so good for me,â he told you. âdo you want me to take you home? or do you wanna come to my place?â
that answer seemed quite obvious.
âyour place,â you said.
âi was hoping youâd say that,â he said.
the two of you moved to the front seats where heeseung began driving in the direction of his apartment, his mind and his heart racing about what the two of you just did and what would happen next.

a/n: hiiiii this is my very first fic/drabble iâve ever written and posted. my writing skills arenât the best but i hope you enjoy 𼚠i hope to make more stories in the future. this is also all fiction and in no means am i trying to relate this to the members irlđŤśđ˝
âokay he should be coming home any minute now so you guys need to hide,â you say to all of your in laws. you check jungkookâs destination on your phone and heâs 1 minute away from the house.
his parents, older brotherâs: jin, yoongi, hoseok, and namjoon, and their spouses and kids go to your back patio that you all decorated for the party. jimin and taehyung wanted to pull a prank on jungkook first but there was no time for that since jungkook was coming any second now.
ever since you and jungkook had moved from Busan a year ago, he hadnât seen his family that entire time. you on the other hand, have some family in the states. you guys also couldnât go to Busan because of work. jungkook yearned to see his family although he called and facetimed them almost everyday.
you hear the sound of jungkookâs car outside parking in the garage. soon after, his keys are opening the front door.
âbaby iâm home!â jungkook says out loud as you get up from the couch in the living room hurrying to him at the front door.
âhi! how was work?â you say cheerfully as he takes off his shoes and you take his bag.
âeh. the same. you werenât at the porch today?â he pouts, a look of sadness and confusion written all over his face because you always wait for him at the porch when he comes back home from work.
âsorry i was doing something,â you say hoping he doesnât think too much about it. he only nods but when he finishes taking off his shoes he begins to notice the light makeup on your face and the outfit youâre wearing. its just a new floral patterned dress you recently got. you paired it with a necklace and matching earrings. itâs nothing special but definitely something you wouldnât normally wear at home. you also styled your hair because you wanted to look presentable for the party tonight. you also didnât have work today and did tell jungkook youâd be at home all day, so he knows you didnât go out. he ogles at you and grabs you by the waist. you squirm at the sudden movement.
âbaby, who told you to look so beautiful?â he asks you while looking at your lips leaning in for a kiss. you know that look on his face but you stop him with your hands on his chest. heâs taken aback by your reaction because itâs also something you normally wouldnât do- refraining from a kiss.
you see the confusion on his face again, this time he furrows his brows.
âuhm i just wanted to dress up. i was getting bored.â
âyou look gorgeous baby. donât worry you wonât be bored for long,â he winks and leans in for another kiss. you stop him again. not because you donât want to kiss, but because his family is definitely watching you guys from the back patio near the living room. the doors are made of glass and although they are hiding in the dark, you know they are definitely peeking at you two. you get shy and flustered by the thought of his parents seeing you two like this so you quickly remove his arms from your waist and head towards the kitchen.
âbaby what happened? are you mad at me?â he says pouting. it hurts you that he may be thinking if he did anything wrong. he could never do anything wrong. jungkook has always showered you with nothing but love for the past year of your marriage and last 6 years of your relationship.
âno of course not. you just need to wash up first.â you say as a lame excuse for him to not touch you. you know if jungkook starts touching and kissing you things get heated real quick. and you certainly cannot let that happen now.
âbut you always give me kisses everyday after work. sometimes a bit moreâ he winks. âand my birthdayâs in two hours,â he whines, his doe eyes looking like a puppy, lips in a pout and frown. âi had such a long day today all i could think about was the bomb ass birthday se-â
âjungkook!â you quickly cut him off. your cheeks gone full red because of the embarrassment. youâre most definitely sure everyone heard that. you panic internally because the thought of his parents hearing that leaves you extremely embarrassed. not to mention, the kids are outside too, and you definitely do not want them wondering what sex is. you and jungkook have this thing where youâre not clingy or touchy around each otherâs families. not because youâre scared theyâd judge you or something but because you both like doing it in private, when itâs just the two of you. pda isnât really your guyâs thing.
âaw come on baby. why are you getting so shy forâ he laughs. âitâs just me and you here. please just tell me what i did wrong. is it cuz i left this morning while you were still asleep. i was running late and i didnât wanna wake you because you had cramps last night and itâs the beginning of the month so your period might be coming and-â
âno no jungkook you didnât do anything wrong. just please hurry and go wash up. then weâll eat dinner,â you cut him off as you push him towards the stairs. you know the more words that comes out of his mouth, the more embarrassing itâll be for the both of you. youâll just let him take a shower before everyone surprises him.
âletâs take a shower together. you know, i had a really reallyyy loooong day and you can help me relieve some tension baby. tomorrow is my birthday after all.â he repeats, using the birthday card to try and convince you while youâre still pushing him towards the stairs. your silence says it all so he quickly retreats, turns around and grabs you by the waist. he carries you up and then places you on the kitchen counter. he stands between your legs, hands brushing your thigh as they slowly slide up under your dress.
âoh my gosh jungkook not now! put me down!â you whisper loudly. heâs confused why youâre whispering so he stops playing with your thighs. you push him away and quickly jump off the counter. you hurry to the living room but heâs faster. he grabs your wrists and pulls you towards him. he holds you with one hand on your waist while the other on the side of your face, thumb gently caressing your cheek. you turn your head to the side and you can clearly spot some of his brothers and their wives hiding behind the chairs and bushes. you only look for a few seconds but you still see them covering their kidâs eyes. âgreatâ you think. you then turn back to jungkook and push his arms away from you. heâs always clingy but of course not when family are around. he doesnât know that yet.
âbaby iâm sorry but you know i canât hold back when you look this hot. i was gonna wait for tonight but seeing you all dressed up for me,â he licks his lips leaning towards your face, âi was hoping for us to start now,â he says in his sultry voice that almost makes you risk it all.
luckily youâre saved from the embarrassment when taehyung slides the glass door to your back patio and enters the living room. âhate to break it to you but you canât be so horny tonight baby.â jimin follows and says while laughing, âyeah baby, donât mean to ruin the fun but youâve got company.â they both mock jungkook. you laugh out loud, only now realizing how many times jungkook has called you baby ever since he stepped foot in the house.
jungkook releases his hands from you, his eyes go wide as heâs surprised by whoâs in front of him. he then runs to hug his brothers. they all jump while hugging. you watch them with the biggest smile on your face. moments later, jungkook stretches out one of his arm for you to join, which you gladly do. the four of you are all circled in a tight hug, jumping up and down in the little circle. reunited after one long year, this is definitely a moment to take in.
âwhatâre you guys doing here? no one told me you were coming?â jungkook asks as you all slowly release each other from the hug.
âhappy early birthday!â jimin says while ruffling jungkookâs hair.
âit was all y/nâs idea. we just wanted to surprise you little bro,â taehyung said as he wraps his arm around your shoulder.
âsurprise!â you say with a big smile on your face looking at jungkook.
jungkook looks at you and quickly lifts you up, spinning you around. âthank you thank you thank you!!â he gives you a big fat kiss on the lips as he puts you back down. you laugh after. finally he gets to kiss you.
âanything for you, you big baby,â you say pinching his cheeks. he gets slightly embarrassed of the word now because he gets remembered of everything he said and did ever since he came home.
he turns to his brothers pointing his fingers at them. âyou guys heard nothing.â
your cheeks turn pink from embarrassment. his brothers look at you while laughing. you cover your face with your hands hiding from your embarrassed face. theyâre not the only one who heard everything, you three think.
âaw come on stop laughing. it was nothing funny,â jungkook says to the guys as he wraps his arms around your waist.
âwell weâre not the only ones who found it funnyâ jimin winks at jungkook while taehyung bites his fist in his teeth holding himself from excessively laughing.
âw-what do you mean?â jungkook looks at you three confusedly. âwho else heard?â
âclose your eyes okay?â you say softly to him and he looks at you in confusion but complies nonetheless. you take his hand and slowly guide him to your back patio. jimin slides the door open while taehyung turns on the fairy lights you set up earlier today. it brightens up the entire patio space. jungkook can sense the change in lighting and squints his eyes.
âno peeking!â you exclaim and cover his eyes with your right hand. the other hand still holding onto jungkook so he doesnât fall or get hurt. some of your nieces and nephews giggle. everyone is already out of their hiding spots and waiting to surprise jungkook.
âbaby what did i just hear?â jungkook asks.
âyouâll see on the count of three okay?â
you look around and make sure everything is in place. all of the tablewear, flowers, candles and jungkookâs favorite foods displayed neatly on the long table. in the back near the pool are his cake and favorite desserts on the dessert table, and his gifts set on a different table. you even bought a cute bunny piĂąata because the kids (and jungkook) would definitely love it. your theme for today was just a nice, comfy, and chill outdoor party and with the help of your in-laws you were able to achieve that. it was everything you pictured~something you knew jungkook would love.
you nod at everyone so they were ready. you release your hands from jungkookâs face.
âokay 3âŚ2âŚ1âŚâ
âSURPRISE!!!â you and everyone yell to jungkook when he opens his eyes. he opens his mouth wide in shock and immediately runs to hug his parents.
âi missed you guys sooo much.â
âwe know sweetie. we did too.â his mom says and kisses his cheek.
âhappy birthday son. weâre so proud of you.â his dad says shortly after.
you see jungkookâs eyes glistening and he looks like heâs on the verge of tears. you knew how much he missed his family and seeing them after so long would definitely make him feel emotional. he hugs his brothers and their spouses after, and then all of his nieces and nephews.
âi canât believe you guys are all here. this doesnât feel real. thank you guys seriously. this is the best birthday gift i couldâve asked for.â
youâre all touched by jungkookâs words. he has worked hard non stop all his life but seeing him now following his dream and working on things he is so passionate about is even more admiring. leaving everything behind back home was an extremely difficult decision for him. when he got the job offer in New York for one of the biggest gaming companies in the world, he was stoked, but knowing that heâd have to leave his family, his home, behind him was definitely not an exciting feeling. he was extremely grateful though to have you by his side but he did feel bad that you had to leave everything behind too, even though you constantly reminded him that wherever he is, you are there too. jungkook waited for the day heâd see his family again, so he looks at everyone taking in this joyous feeling.
âdonât thank us honey, your beautiful wife planned all of this. you are truly lucky to have y/n by your side.â you gush at his momâs words and let out a soft âthank youâ to her going over to give her a hug.
jungkook comes over to you and smiles so endearingly you feel like crying because how can your husband look so precious. he pulls you in a tight hug and whispers âiâm so lucky.â
the rest of the night is spent beautifully with everyone eating, singing, dancing, laughing, and partying. jungkook is having so much fun with his family and you look at him fondly with the biggest smile plastered on your face. how did you get so lucky to have such an amazing and caring husband, along with a beautiful family who adores you just as much as you do them.
when you go back inside to the kitchen to grab more drinks, you feel a light smack to your butt. you gasp turning around and finding your husband with a smirk on his face that you know too well. he pulls you to the corner where no one can see you guys through the glass doors.
jungkook lifts you up and hugs you so tight you start giggling. âthank you so much baby. i really donât know what i did to deserve you. but just know i will continue to spend everyday of my life loving you and caring for you. you seriously donât know how much you mean to me y/n.â
âi do jungkook, i do know and you mean the world to me and more,â you say as he settles you back down. you cup his face and pull him in a chaste kiss thatâs sweet and tender. the one where all sounds are blocked and itâs just the two of you. he deepens the kiss and pulls you in closer, one hand on your waist, the other on your nape. you pull back not too long and stare at him, fingers brushing his soft, fluffy hair thatâs parted in the middle. âi love you so much my love. happy birthday.â

for more logan angst, would you consider doing a "one year later" or something like that follow-up to dbf!logan and the i love you fight?
i miss you, i'm sorry-dbf!logan howlett x fem!reader
part one
456 days after
everyday your words haunted logan. he could picture you with tears in your eyes so clearly. he still went down to your fathers bar; needing something to cope. you left shortly after the fight, using the money you had saved up from working at the bar to get an apartment a couple towns over. there needed to be distance between you and logan but it seemed that no where was far enough.
logan knew every tiny detail about your life since you left. your father shows him pictures of how you decorated your apartment and tells him about the new boyfriend you've got. he should be happy; you got out before logan could get you hurt. instead, he's been drinking himself to sleep most night. your favorite bra and sleeping shorts still sat in his bedroom dresser, untouched but they still smelled like you.
"she comes home next week." your father says, pouring logan another glass of whiskey. "her mom and i are throwing her a small welcome home party, you should come by."
as if logan wouldn't feel more like a dick, he had also drove you away from your parents. always coming up with an excuse for why you can't come visit.
"i'm not sureâ"
logan was cut off by your father again.
"c'mon, bud. i don't wanna be the only guy there." he jokes, excited to see you but just maybe not your friends that your mom invited.
"uh, sure." logan sighs, taking another swig from the glass. he desperately hoped that your father would forget or that logan could come up with some excuse.
ââââ ââ
â ââââ
your thumbs drum anxiously at the steering wheel as you drive down your old street. the nerves were finally hitting, too late to turn back like you had many times before. all of your friends cars sat in the driveway, you can't cancel on them again.
logan could smell you before you even got out of your car. he's down in the basement with your dad and a few of the guys from the bar. his mind was anywhere except present as he focused solely on you.
"that should be her, fellas." your dad smiles, getting up to greet you upstairs with the others. "i'll be back."
logan finished his beer and wondered if he should sneak out or fake some emergency. was he even ready to you again? how would you react?
"hey, logan? could you come help bring in some bags?" your father yells down the stairs.
"logan?" your voice was shaking at the mention of the man who shattered your heart.
this isn't the time to be crying. just get through dinner and then you can drive home; tell them you can't stay the night. fuck, what were you going to do?
"welcome home, sweetheart." logan mumbles with a slight nod, walking past you and out the door.
it was hard to mask your anger. one of your friends pours you a glass of wine and brings you to the living room, away from logan. your dad and him bring in your suitcases and sit them in your old bedroom. all of it felt like when you step off a roller coaster; dizzy, slightly confused, wanting to go again.
at the table, your mom asks about your new boyfriend. logan couldn't stand you going on and on about how great this guy was. so great that he's too busy to come home with you.
"so, do you think he's 'the one'?" one of your friends asks.
"um... i'm not sure." you shrug, catching logan's eye. "but i know he loves me and that's all that matters."
you might as well shot logan in the chest with that one.
ââââ ââ
â ââââ
one too many glasses of wine and two beers later, almost everyone was starting to clear out. everyone except for logan. he's not sure why he didn't leave sooner. perhaps it was your presence that made him stay. even if you were pissed at him still, you were still here, still near him.
"i'm gonna go get more beer from the garage." you tell your friends, stumbling a little to your feet.
the truth was that you needed some air. too consumed by logan's heated gaze. you made it down the porch steps before you heard the screen door open and close.
"i don't need any help." you call out over your shoulder.
the foot steps sounded much closer by the time you flicked on the light switch.
"don't you think you've had enough to drink tonight?" logan asks, shutting the garage door behind him.
"i can drink however much i want." you slur slightly. "i am an adult after all ."
"i know, you're an adult."
"are you sure? because wasn't it just a little over a year ago that you were still treating me like a child?"
"if you don't want to be seen as a child, then don't act like one."
"fuck you, logan." you hiss, slamming the fridge door.
"oh sure, it's fuck me for sayin' the truth." logan rolls his eyes.
"it's fuck you for breaking my heart."
"do you think that you didn't break my heart by leaving?"
"i left because you told me to go!" you cried, finally letting the tears flow. "i said i loved you and you got scared like a little kid."
"i got scared because you shouldn't love someone as fucked up as me." he snaps, voice becoming strained.
"did you serious think i didn't know?"
logan looks at you stunned. how did you...?
"you talk in your sleep. it wasn't hard to piece together after that." you answer with sigh. "your mutation doesn't scare me."
there's a moment of silence between the two of you. logan steps forward, touching a lock of your hair; vanilla body wash flooding his senses. he's missed you so much.
"your stuff is still in my drawers." logan whispers. you know what he means; he's never been good with expressing his emotions but you always could tell what he meant. "want ya' to come home, sweetheart."
logan's rough palm moves up to cup the side of your face. your torn between shoving him away or pulling him closer. without a second thought, you nuzzle into his touch. old habits die hard.
"i can't." you tell him.
"yes, you canâ"
"no. you don't love me, lo."
"i do, i want to be with you." logan begs, fighting off his tears.
"you love when i'm in bed with you or when we listen to records and do cross word puzzles together, but you are not in love with me." you tell him, lightly removing his hand from your face. "i can't be with someone who hides from me, someone who can't even say out loud that they love me. i'm sorry, logan."
you grab the case of beer and walk past him one last time. it was hell to leave him there but even logan knew he deserved it. he wasn't worthy of your love then and he defintely wasn't worthy of it now. you dodged the bullet that would leave him here to bleed out.

The Shape of Family â§âËâŕź
As a single dad, Steveâs world revolves around school drop-offs, bedtime rituals, and tee-ball practicesand he's struggling to keep up. But you're always there, happily lending a hand when he needs it most. / part one masterlist
part two - at the rec center's fall festival, you and steve finally make plans to hang out 11k
a/n - how did this end up twice as long as the first chapter this was supposed to be a short one!! general warnings/tags here
ââ .âŚ
Utahâs pretty this time of year. Fall is in full swing. The maple and cottonwood mellow into rich shades of orange, there is a constant crush of leaves underfoot, and the crisp scent of pine needles mingle with the breeze. Your neighbors go all out to decorate. Pumpkins are for sale on every corner and the apple orchards buzz with families for the harvest. This kind of weather has every brush of sunlight feeling like a hug you didnât know you needed.Â
The rec center hosts an annual fall festival, bringing hayrides, corn mazes, and costume contests. And though you wouldnât normally volunteer on a Sunday, Steveâs hard to say no to. Itâs not like he begged you or anything, a half-shrug and simple âIf you want toâ was enough convincing.Â
Youâd volunteer with or without Steve. You have the time and the goodwill and thus itâs a cork on the end of your monotonous work-week. But thereâs no denying that Steve makes it a hell of a lot more enjoyable. Heâs the sunrise after a long night, guiding you into the days ahead. And yeah, maybe youâre romanticizing too much. Too caught up in the way his tongue sticks out when heâs concentrating or how he mumbles to himself when he forgets youâre near. But working with him is delightful, nonetheless.Â
You and Steve are friends now. Well, work friends. Youâve never actually hung out outside of the rec center but there isnât a Friday that one of you doesnât mention it while you eat lunch in his office. Youâve learned trivial little things about him, like his favorite brand of pen, the store he buys his groceries from, and how he likes his coffeeâ hot enough to burn, with as much sugar as he can get away with without attracting strange looks. You ask about Penelope often and heâs very open; eager to rant and rave about the latest details of their lives. She visits every now and then, usually too sick or naughty to be at school. So youâve come to know her just as much. That she loves Barbies and Salt-N-Pepa and insects but not the furry ones.Â
Being in each otherâs lives is routine at this pointâ parking beside his car, leaving sticky notes on his desk, setting your bag in his office. It would be crazy to say you love him, you donât, obviously, but you feel like you could. And you know youâd be devastated if he left the center. Your shift assignments are arranged so they almost always thread with his.
Heâs always hated asking for help, but then you came, puttering into his office with a lovely smile and open arms and suddenly itâs not so bad. Heâll ask for your assistance on more projects than not: your advice, your creative eye, your hands to hang something that he most certainly could do alone.Â
Like now, you trail only a few paces behind Steve, cradling a wicker basket full of decorations. He billows a tablecloth over the nearest picnic table, considering your dispute over the best holiday.Â
âI dunno, Iâm more of a Christmas guy,â Steve shrugs, smoothing out a ripple in the fabric. âThe music is just inarguably better. You get to open presents and eat delicious food. Not really a contest in my book.âÂ
You hum, centering a plastic pumpkin.Â
âPenelope is like the queen of Halloween, though.â The corners of his eyes crinkle with mirth. âThis morning, she told me she wished she was born on Halloween so she could go trick-or-treating on her birthday.âÂ
You wear a similar expression, gaze flicking over to Penelope. Sheâs not far, crouched in a strip of dirt, parting a pile of leaves to search for ladybugs and other creatures. âI bet sheâs excited for all that candy.âÂ
âThatâs all sheâd eat if I let her. Iâve already scheduled a dentist appointment for her in Novemberâ But, Iâm just as bad, she gets her sweet tooth from me,â he admits.Â
âFigured. The amount of Reese's wrappers I find in your trash.âÂ
He squeezes your shoulder playfully, not hard enough that you should need to squirm away but you do. âWhatever. Why are you going through my trash anyway, weirdo.âÂ
You click your tongue, âI wasnât going through your trash! They are on the top where anyone could see.âÂ
âMhmm, whatever you say⌠dumpster diver.âÂ
Joan, the youth counselor, whisks over to interrupt with arms full of mason jars before you can retort. Steve smothers his smirk with an answer to her question. Your tongue prods the inside of your cheek to prevent your own.Â
Itâs like this with Steve, now. Teasing and taunting each other like schoolchildren. A game of tug-of-war, where every knowing glance and light-hearted jab pulls the rope just a little tighter between you. Itâs as thrilling as it is nerve-wracking.Â
Itâs not much later when guests filter into the festival. The earliest glow of sunset mists the courtyard in gold. Thereâs cider stations and pumpkin carving and a whole bunch of apple bobbers fighting to win a pumpkin pie. Monster Mash bleeds from several speakers lining the trail to the tented area you find yourself in. People dance and laugh and drink. Itâs a very successful event for the rec center.Â
Steve plops down on the bench across from you, Penelope at his hip. A silent, self-invitation he knows you wonât declineâ you enjoy their company more than people-watching. He seems to find you no matter which way you drift, even through a sea of townsfolk.Â
A big scoop of chili is spooned from his paper bowl into a second. âBlow on it,â Steve reminds, planting it in front of Penelope.Â
She does blow on it, a spray of more spit than air that merits her a shoulder nudge to knock it off.Â
Penelope simpers over her steaming food as Steve offers you an apologetic look. Last you saw her, she was waving her way up the stairs to the costume contest. Sheâs since been bundled upâ a tiara traded for a knit beanie and the gown from her dress-up bin crammed underneath a thick sweater and spilling out the hem.Â
The string lights bathe their faces in a white glow. It highlights the beauty mark on the slope of Penelopeâs cheek, like a half of Steveâs pair in the same spot. Itâs not often you get to just enjoy their company. No scrambling about deadlines or standards. Itâs a calm you could get used to. But Steveâs always ten steps ahead, already plotting which crew needs the most tending to when heâs finished eating. Heâs selfless like that. Your feet ache from running around, but Steveâs probably worse.Â
âPenelope, is that what youâre wearing on Halloween?â You ask.
Her chin presses into the neckline of her sweater. âNo,â she recalls, mouth full of sauce. âIâm being Dorothy.âÂ
Steve swipes a napkin across her lips before anything drips.Â
âFrom The Wizard of Oz?âÂ
âMhmm,â she grins, popping the spoon out of her mouth.Â
âVery cool. Did you get your costume yet?âÂ
She nods, glancing at Steve, âDaddy made it.âÂ
Steveâs in his own little world, slurping his belly full of warm food and basking in the second of peace heâs been given. But he blinks back into reality at your questioning stare, leaning in to hear you over the boisterous laughs of nearby people.Â
You try to reel in your surprise, soften your features. âYou made her costume?â
âOh,â he waves a dismissive hand, âI just sewed a shirt to a dress. Nothing fancy.âÂ
âStillâ thatâs really cool, Steve.âÂ
He stirs his food, voice torn with guilt. âI dunno. Itâs cheap.âÂ
âCostumes are better homemade. The ones in the stores are tacky. I bet it looks amazing.âÂ
Fragments of a smile find his lips, more a peace offering than a true one.Â
âI painted my shoes red and I put so much glitter on them so they sparkle,â Penelope adds cheerfully. Â
âYou did?âÂ
She nods, shining with pride.Â
âItâs been two weeks and Iâm still finding glitter everywhere,â Steve comments, more amused than he lets on. He canât be that mad when theyâre little reminders of his favorite person in the world.Â
âAre you dressing up?â You ask him.Â
He huffs, side-eyeing Penelope. âYes.âÂ
A glint forms in her eyes, a sly little smirk beneath. âDaddy is going to be the lion because heâs hairy.â
You laugh and Penelope joins you because Steve has a funny pouty face.Â
He rolls his eyes. âTell âem whoâs your Toto?âÂ
âCinderella!â
âNo way!â You match her level of excitement. âDoes she have a costume?âÂ
âNo, but I have a basket for her to sit in.âÂ
You coo, âI bet Cinderella will love that.âÂ
Steve snorts because he knows you know Cinderella will in fact not love that.Â
Cinderella is supposedly the grumpiest animal heâs ever met. She was a quick, unfortunately painful, lesson on boundaries for Penelopeâ not to pet certain areas or animals as a whole. Steve described her as an old, scraggly thing with a temper flaring unpredictably from one moment to the next. He wasnât a cat person to begin with, growing up in a house with no animals probably started his revulsion to having fur on his clothes; but at two and a half, Penelope begged to feed the stray on their porch and she just kept coming back.Â
Steve wanted a dog when he moved out, if anything at all; but in four years heâs learned more about sacrifice than any speech his parents tried to drill into his head. And Cinderella is practically Penelopeâs best friend now. She sets aside birthday money for new cat toysâ the crinkly ones are her favoriteâ and sneaks the cat through her bedroom window from time to time. She even cradles her like a baby, not without protest and the occasional scratch, of course, but Penelope knows the risk.Â
âI told her Cinderella probably wonât want to come trick or treating but she can still take a picture with her at home.âÂ
âI told you she will want to go because thereâs candy.âÂ
âYes, but I told you cats canât have candy,â Steve jabs her side lightly.Â
Penelope only pouts. âThatâs sad. I think she would like candy.âÂ
âIt is,â he agrees, slotting a rogue strand of hair behind her ear. âBut it makes them sick, remember? So we canât share with Cinderella.âÂ
Her cheek melds with his sleeve, begrudgingly agreeing with a sigh. âCan I get my face painted?âÂ
Steve traces her line of sight to the ring of kids swarming the face painter. Itâs not far. He can see well enough to recognize most of the children. Many are younger than Penelope too.Â
But Steve hesitates, âCan you wait until Iâm done eating? Iâll go with you.â
âDaddy,â she whines, pinching his arm hair. âYou take forever.â
Penelopeâs got magical little eyes. You donât know how Steve ever says no.Â
âI can take her,â you offer, stacking trash on your plate. âIâm done anyway.âÂ
âNo, itâs okay.â He deflates with a sigh, curling into his ribs so he can see her face. âYou can go by yourselfââ
Her frown washes away just as fast as she peels herself off of his arm.Â
âBut! You have to come straight back when youâre done and you have to stay where I can see you. âKay?âÂ
ââKay!â She beams, nearly tripping on her dress as she swings her legs over the bench and breaks into a run.Â
Steve canât hide the wobble in his smile as hard as he tries to be strong. Most of the hardships heâs faced as a parent are foreign to you, but clearly, this isnât easy for him.Â
âSheâll be fine,â you reassure with a ginger squeeze to his wrist. âWe arenât far if she needs something.âÂ
He nods, still locked in on Penelope. âI know, I know. Iâm trying really hard not to be a helicopter parent as she gets older. It sucks though, feeling like she doesnât need me anymore.âÂ
âSteve,â you deadpan, prying his attention back. âThatâs⌠silly. Youâre her dad, of course she still needs you. Maybe not all the time or as much but sheâll always need you.âÂ
âI dunno. I feel like she grows an inch every time I turn around. I never thought Iâd say this, but I actually miss when she was in diapers. Sheâs cute now, but God was she cute then.â He chuckles to himself, eyes swinging from Penelope to you and then back.Â
âI believe it,â you grin, admiring his girl. Her cheeks are red from the cold, like two tomatoes framing her lips. She might like to wear your jacket, you consider, but sheâs so small, perhaps sheâll overheat from too many layers.
Penelope scrambles into the chair when itâs her turn, talking a mile a minute to the face painter. A funny wave of emotion roves over you. Thereâs affection and joy and and then something heavier and harder to describe.Â
âIâll have to show you her baby pictures sometime.â You hear the parting of a true smile. âThereâs this oneâ it was her first birthdayâ I gave her a whole cake and she just demolished it. Had it in her hair and her eyelashes and in between her toes. She was so damn happy.âÂ
You exhale a happy hum, turning back to Steve. Heâs propped on his elbows now, close enough to discern each eyelash from the next. It doesnât startle you as much as it just scrapes the words right off your tongue.Â
Heâs reading you, churning, and chasing the right words all in between the blink of an eye. âWe should hang out, you know? Like actuallyâ We always talk about it butâŚâ He shakes his head, trailing off.Â
Heâd let the words be carried with the wind if you wanted. Itâs hard to imagine youâd say no, but people have surprised him in worse ways. Just when he thinks he knows someone, truly knows them, they cut him off like heâs no more than a dying branch. The ghosts of past someones and somethings still haunt him. It makes being so forward with you all the more difficult.Â
You wear a whimsical sort of grin that you hide behind the brush of your hand, fighting your own flood of emotions. âYeahâ I mean, yeah. When?âÂ
Excitement flares across his features. âWhat are you doing on Halloween? You could come trick-or-treating with us?â
âProbably just home handing out candyâ but Steve, I donât want to intrude on Halloween. It sounds really special to Penelope.â
âYou wouldnât! No way, Penelope would be thrilled if you came. She talks about you a lot, you know?âÂ
âNo she doesnât,â you grin madly into your palm, peering over to her. Her face is dressed in a bright shade of orange now. With her pudgy cheeks, she reminds you of a little pumpkin.Â
âShe does! Swear itâ on my life.â Heâs not lying. He canât hold your eyes when he lies, even about silly things.Â
You huff, feeling foolishly giddy. âI donât have time to get a costume, Steve.âÂ
âNonsense. We can find you one. Iâll make it if I have to. The Tin Man and The Scarecrow are still up for grabs.âÂ
You swallow, washing the sudden dryness from your throat. Why does Steve have to be so damn cute and sweet all at once? âI dunno. Would it be fine if I didnât dress up?âÂ
He chuckles dryly. âPenelope wonât have that, I can tell you that much. Plus if Iâm going to be tortured into some itchy lion onesie I expect youâll do the same.â Heâs teasing, which is typical for you both, but itâs like youâve forgotten how.Â
âSteve.â
âCome on. If not for me, for Penelope. Sheâll love it.âÂ
âOkay,â you settle. But you arenât really settling. He could ask you to dress up on any other day of the year and youâd do it.Â
Penelope races overâ a tabby cat with long whiskers and a pastel pink noseâ yelling, âDaddy, look!â
Steve beams at her like he stuck a lightbulb in his mouth, somehow brighter than before. âI see! You look so pretty, princess.âÂ
âIâm like Cinderella.â
âYou are!â He pats her former seat beside him until she sits.Â
Her long lashes flutter questioningly.Â
âNell, donât you think we need, I dunno, like a Tinman or a Scarecrow to go with our costumes on Halloween?âÂ
She tracks his gaze over to you, adopting your smirk. âAre you coming trick-or-treating with us?â Her voice is uneven and bubbly with anticipation.Â
âDo you want me to?â You ask genuinely.Â
Penelopeâs tongue wriggles in her mouth like she canât find the proper words to express what she feels. But she nods in this bashful way against Steveâs shoulder that surprises you.Â
âAre we being shy now?â Steve remarks, pulling her into his arms effortlessly to peck her hairline.Â
âNo,â she whines against his sweater, overjoyed to be smothered in love. Dry paint creases with her scrunched face. Itâs an adorable sight. You keep wishing you had a camera on you because this is the kind of thing Steve probably puts in his photo albums.Â
The moon climbs the sky quickly, draping the party in a silver veil. Many stay for the campfire and the promise of smores. But the later it gets, the crankier kids become for their parents. Penelopeâs no exception, whining and clinging to Steve until he agrees to hold her. And he tries to work still, but his arms are starting to burn and stamping hayride tickets isnât easy one-handed so he makes the hard choice to leave before cleanup.Â
He feels awful, apologizing to several of his coworkers on the way out but most are too drunk on cider or too high on festive cheer to care. Besides, heâs paid a salary, doing this out of the kindness of his heart. He has no obligation to be hereâ youâd reminded him of that multiple times. But the festival does feel empty when they leave, even with half the town still around.Â
áŻâ
Steve lives in a quiet pocket outside of town on a curvy, secluded stretch of road. The directions heâd scrawled out on a receipt werenât as useful as youâd hoped as one of the street names you were intended to turn on was smudged beyond legibility. But you made it, parked in front of a white house with a similarly white picket fence. Steveâs beamer is idled to your right. Itâs strange seeing it somewhere thatâs not the rec center. But itâs a familiar comfort between so much new.Â
Thereâs a tire swing knotted to the oak tree in the yard, a collection of painted rocks in the pebble-lined path up to the house, and two carved pumpkins set outside the door, caving in on themselves but not yet rotting. A lot of love is shared here. Â
Penelope answers the door when you knock. Sheâs half dressedâ stockings hugging a pair of fleece leggings and a flowy pajama tank top. Her eyes outline your costume and light up with approval.Â
You sport a flannel and denim overalls stuffed with prickly straw straight from the local farm, courtesy of Steve. But Penelope ogles your face paint more than anythingâ a stitched grin and two circles for blush. You hope itâs not scary looking.Â
She doesnât know how to let you insideâ sheâs not supposed to answer the door after allâ so she hangs clumsily off the door handle until you ask, âCan I come in?âÂ
âYes,â she teeters out of the way, closing the door behind you with a sweeping grinâ the mischievous kind that makes you wonder what sheâs up to.
The foyer is situated between the living room and kitchen, both of which are missing Steve.Â
âWhereâs your dad?âÂ
âUmm. Cleaning?âÂ
âOh. Are you getting ready to go?â
âYes, but I canât find my shoes,â she makes a strangled face and shrugs with her entire wingspan.
âDo you want me to help you look?âÂ
She nods, âI think theyâre in my closet.â
Penelope sprints up the stairs easily, leaning over the railing at the top until you hesitantly follow. You hope he wonât mind. You were technically let in.Â
It reeks of chemicals upstairs. You stifle a cough and hope itâs Steve, not some science experiment in Penelopeâs room. But you donât worry long. The culprit swings around the corner, juggling several bottles of solutions and sprays. Steve wouldâve barreled straight into you had you not thrust your arms out in defense, but still, all his things scatter across the floor.Â
âChrist, you scared me.â He kneels, tucking a roll of paper towels against his chest. âNell, you canât answer the door without me.âÂ
âI looked in the window.â
You hand him a sanitizer and shimmy your hat back into place. Itâs too big and far too floppy, sagging over your brows no matter how you situate it. Amusement draws his cheeks up as he realizes. You look ready to plop yourself in the middle of someoneâs crops and heâs in a tee and jeans you might find him in any other day. His smiley-staring only makes you feel sillier.Â
âThe strawâs really a nice touch, huh?â Steve teases, picking a sandy stem from your collar with his free hand. Heâs got that smirk you so often find on Penelopeâs lips.Â
You yank the strand from his grasp and poke the column of his throat with it. âIâm definitely more itchy than youâll be.âÂ
His fingers encase the entirety of your fist like a shell. Theyâre knobby and mannish, stout against your own. But thereâs a tenderness to his hold as he eases your fist away. You donât push back, though you contemplate it. Heâs never touched you for so long; heâs basically holding your hand.Â
âCouldâve been the Tinman,â he says, releasing your fingers at your thigh.Â
You suck in, like fuel for a reply, and exhale a breathy, nervous laugh. âAnd paint my entire body gray? No thanks.âÂ
He chuckles, eyes darting behind you. âWell, you look great. You like it, Nell?âÂ
Youâd almost forgotten she was there. Sheâs quiet as a mouse when she wants to be.Â
Penelope bobs her head behind you, patiently watching from the doorway to her room. âI have oh-ralls like that.âÂ
âYou do,â Steve confirms, fidgeting with the nozzle on the disinfectant bottle. It reminds you of the smell.Â
âYou kill someone?âÂ
He stiffens. âWhat?âÂ
You flick the bottle of Windex, serious facade fading. âSmells like youâre trying to cover it up.âÂ
âOh! No,â his shoulders soften, âJust a little spring cleaning⌠in fall.âÂ
You hum gaily. âI like your house.âÂ
âYou do?â His voice is light, buoyant with relief. âI can give you a tour. A proper one.âÂ
âI would but Iâve promised a patient little lady Iâd help her find her shoes first.â
Penelope beams when you glimpse at her. âI think theyâre in my closet,â she shares with Steve.Â
âI think so too,â he says, eyeing past her. âWhat happened to cleaning?âÂ
âI was but I had to find my costume first.âÂ
âItâll be easier to find when your roomâs clean.â He sends you a look, âDonât let her trick you into cleaning for her. Sheâs sneaky.â Steve whispers the last part, loud and teasing.Â
âIâm not sneaky!âÂ
âMhmm. Iâll go get ready and then come help you, Nell.âÂ
âThen trick-or-treat?âÂ
âYes,â he starts down the stairs, âYell if you need me.âÂ
Penelope tows you into her room by the arm, unphased by the clinking of toys crammed behind the door. Anything in her way gets kicked or shoved aside without a second thought. Itâs like her toy chest exploded, a kaleidoscope of pink and purple across the carpet. And no wonder itâs a mess; she starts chucking things out of her closet, adding to the pile spilling out like an avalancheâbooks, stuffed animals, barbie dolls, baby dolls, and so so many clothes.Â
You squeeze by a play tent, scanning the floor.Â
âTheyâre red and sparkly, âmember?â Penelope calls from behind her closet doors.Â
You tip a beanbag over with your foot, âI remember.âÂ
She babbles to herself as she looks, just like Steve doesâ little hums and scraps of thought that are hard to catch. Itâs a funny thing, to see it translated from one human to another.Â
It doesnât take long to find the shoes, wedged underneath her bed with numerous other things. You go prone against the floor to dig them out and hold them up by the straps. âThese it, Pen?âÂ
She gasps vibrantly. You wish you got up in time to see her face.Â
âHow did you know they were under there!â She shrieks, snatching them from you.Â
âJust had a feeling,â you sit up properly, happily watching her slip the flats on.Â
She practically twinkles, clicking her heels together like Dorothy.Â
âThey look stunning! You painted these?âÂ
âYes,â she skips over to her dresser, shuffling through drawer after drawer. Anything folded surely isnât anymore.Â
âYouâre a talented artist.âÂ
âI know. Daddy says.â Penelope yanks out a blue line of fabric. âMy dress is so pretty. Iâm going to be the prettiest Dorothy for Halloween.âÂ
âI know you will! You should give your dad a big hug for making such a pretty dress.âÂ
She buckles into the costume as fast as she can, patting the skirt down with a satisfied grin when itâs on.Â
After several compliments and much debate, youâre able to convince her Dorothy would have a clean room. Penelope puts a few things away, but sheâs easily distracted. And itâs hard to blame her with so many toys about. So you do most of the cleaning, but youâre happy to. Itâll make Steve happyâ lest he finds out it was youâ which makes you happy.Â
The floorâs mostly cleared when Penelope decides Steveâs taking too long; itâs time for your house tour, with or without him. And when he doesnât answer her shout itâs decidedly without him. She shows you downstairs firstâ the living room, the kitchen, the half bath, her favorite hiding spot underneath the stairs. All the while she explains her very detailed and strategic trick-or-treating plan. Staying out until midnight is the priority, she doesnât seem to care if itâs past her bedtime, and filling several bags with candy is also high on the list.Â
âAnd this is Daddyâs room.â She jerks the door knob several times before yelling, âDaddy!âÂ
âWhat?â Steve calls, muffled.Â
âLet us in!â
âI canât hear youâ hold on!âÂ
Steve unlocks the door donning the promised lion onesie and a pair of sneakers. Itâs ridiculous how handsome he looks even with a stupid fur collar and tail.Â
âCute,â is all you manage to say. He takes it as teasing, rolling his eyes, though you really mean it.Â
âCan you help me? I canât get my whiskers right.â He taps the cap of an eyeliner pen against his cheek where heâs drawn two lines.Â
âSure.â You take the stick and follow him through his room to the master ensuite.Â
âWait!â Penelope shouts and waves vaguely at the room. âThis is Daddyâs room.â
You pause to look it over, jovially commenting, âWow! Very nice.âÂ
And it is nice. Thereâs a rustic set of furniture striped in blue and green accents; paired well with the framed floral prints above his dresser. And the bedâs made, only slightly surprising, topped with a Care Bearâs quilt you assume is Penelopeâs.Â
In the bathroom, Steve leans against the counter, arms braced behind him on the sink rim. You shuffle in front of his legs, skimming knees accidentally. He has no abhorrence for physical touch, you know that for certain. Heâs touchy with not just you, but everyone in the office. An arm around the shoulder, a pat on the back, a gentle squeeze to the armâ he gives these out like candy on Halloween. But even so, touching him isnât always easy. Itâs vulnerable, runs the risk of rejection.Â
Steve smiles at you, ever-patient and encouraging when you stall awkwardly.Â
âSorry,â you whisper. Talking any louder feels illegal when heâs so close. You cup his jaw and steady your opposite hand against his cheek, picturing the line how you want it.Â
But just when you press into his skin and flick the pen, Penelope slams a drawer shut, startling you enough to flinch. The ink slants all the way behind his ear like a jagged nail.Â
You gasp and recoil, âShit.âÂ
Penelope gasps twice as loud and Steve crumples into laughter, even more so when he turns to view the damage in the mirror.Â
âOops,â you chuckle nervously, thumbing at the black streak. âThis washes off right?âÂ
âYeah, donât worry. Iâve redone it like four times.âÂ
You douse your finger in water and work the pad across his happy cheek gently.Â
Heâs watching you. You donât see, just feel it in the fringe of your peripherals. Itâs not like he has many places to look when youâre a hairâs breadth from his nose. But he might as well press a magnifying glass against your face, point out every pore and blemish and hair you're insecure about.Â
Your cheeks burn and the beginning prickles of sweat coat your upper lip. You brushed your teeth before you arrived, but how could you forget a mint? And what about an extra layer of deodorant? That wouldnât have hurt. You glance at Steve anxiously and his eyes jump to Penelope. For once youâre grateful not to keep his attention.Â
Penelope digs through his cabinet on a quest to find nothing in particular.Â
You pull away to judge your first line as Steve opens his mouth. âNell, go get your brush and hair ties.âÂ
The top half of her face pops up over the cupboard door like a puppet. âBut I want my hair down.âÂ
âI still have to brush it. And I thought you wanted the bows?âÂ
She considers his wordsâ her prior wordsâ brows pinching before she shrugs, âOkay.â The cabinet door thuds against its hinges as it claps shut, and not a second later, Steveâs bedroom door slams as Penelope charges out.Â
âYou would not believe how often I tell this kid not to slam the doors,â he scoffs, though itâs devoid of any real anger.Â
You take his chin again, packing away a grin. You have to focus. âDonât move,â you prompt.Â
Heâs relaxed in your hold. Still as a stone, maybe apart from the slight tug of his lips when you resume drawing.Â
âTickles,â he murmurs when you lift the nib.Â
You print another three to match the trio on his right. Itâs not bad, but you wouldnât say itâs good. The angles are skewed weird and oneâs shorter than the rest. But if he wants them any better, you might not be the best person to ask.Â
âHowâs that?â You draw back, searching for any smudges.Â
He spins, briefly inspecting his reflection before facing you again. âPerfect! Thank you!â
Perfect is definitely a stretch.Â
Steveâs a perfectionist. Youâve seen it innumerably in the office. How heâll spend hours revising something only to ruminate on an insignificant detail after. And with Penelope, every parenting decision is subject to endless second-guessing, as if her health and happiness hinges on the smallest nuances.Â
But as much as heâs a perfectionist, Steve would never judge you in the same way he might himself. Your whiskers truly are perfect in his eyes, not for the shape or size, but because you drew themâ wonky and all.Â
The ink warps around his smile. You study his face under the guise of checking your work. Steveâs a handsome guy. An inviting kind of handsome, with shallow laugh lines and the start of stubble stippled across his jaw. Â
âWait,â you square his shoulders, brushing the nape of his neck to reach for his hood. The lionâs mane is laid gently over the top of his hair.Â
âNow itâs perfect.âÂ
He smirks. âSexy, huh?â
âShould leave this unzipped a little. The cougars will love that.âÂ
Steve laughs, harder than you think youâve ever heard him. Itâs so contagious even Penelope joins your hysterics when she returns, though she hasnât a clue what youâre laughing about.Â
âWhatâs so funny?â Penelope lurches into his legs with a handful of hair things.Â
âWe just think my costumeâs kinda silly. Here, baby.â Steve heaves her onto the counter and props her right in between the sinks.Â
Her dress pours over her crossed legs like a layered cake, baby blue and white gingham. Steve really did a great job with the stitching; you canât even tell it was done by hand. And Penelope hasnât complained about the fit once so it must be comfortable too.Â
âFace forward please,â Steve reminds gently for a third time when Penelope twists her neck to speak.Â
Penelope frowns at his reflection. âYouâre pulling too tight.â
âSorry. You have to stop moving though.âÂ
Thereâs a mild curve to his lips. Heâs not aggravated with her fidgeting, in fact, quite the opposite. Maybe because youâre around, heâs in too good of a mood to spoil with something as trivial as his daughter's hair. But regardless, itâs endearing as it is entertaining to care for Penelope. He loves being a dad, even when itâs frustrating. And you can see the love as he braids her hairâ how he cards through knots from the ends up and slowly sections off pieces to tackle one at a time.Â
âIâm not moving.â Her chin droops as she scratches the polish from her nails.Â
Steve cups her jaw, steering it back up. âYou are, monkey.âÂ
âMonkey?â She chortles, seeking your gaze in the mirror to see if you also find the nickname funny.Â
âYeah,â Steve murmurs, seizing the rubber band from between his teeth. âMonkeys move a lot.âÂ
âDo they have tails?â
âMhmm.â
âYou have a tail 'cause youâre a lion.âÂ
Steve hums and bends back, evaluating his performance. âThere. You look so gorgeous, Penelope.âÂ
And he really has done a great job, especially with all her wiggles. Steve takes a lot of pride in styling his hairâ much of his confidence derives from it. And he tries to extend that care to Penelope; to teach her how gorgeous she is and that she deserves to be nurtured.Â
Penelope shakes her head disapprovingly. âIâm Dorothy now, Dad.âÂ
âOh, sorry.â Steve turns toward you instinctually, happy to catch your smile.Â
âYou look very very pretty, Miss Dorothy,â you correct.Â
She slides off the counter, aided by Steveâs hand. âCan we go now?âÂ
Penelope waits patiently in the foyer for Steve to gather everything needed to leave. This lasts for all of about ten minutes before Penelope is halfway out the front door, too excited to wait any longer.Â
âWait, Nell!â Steve shouts from beside you in the kitchen.Â
Youâre choosing snacks and filling water bottles. Steve doesnât really need to pack a bag for Penelope anymore, sheâs a year and a half past diapers, but he likes to feel prepared.Â
When Penelope doesnât answer, he meets her on the porch to explain, âIâm almost done. And we still have to take pictures.âÂ
âI donât wanna. Iâm ready to leave.âÂ
âWell, we arenât leaving until I get a picture of Dorothy.âÂ
She sighs, lugging herself back inside like sheâs got bricks for shoes. âWhat about Cinderella?âÂ
âGo and lookâ get the treats.âÂ
She scrambles into the kitchen, snagging a jar of cat treats from the counter quickly. You shoulder the backpack and follow her out. Steve joins you not long after, two flashlights and several glowsticks in hand.Â
âNo Cinderella?â Steve asks, unzipping the bag pressed to your back to stock with more things.Â
âNo,â Penelope pouts, vigorously shaking the jar in the air. âHow can I be Dorothy without Toto.âÂ
He yanks the zipper back up, then pats her head, âKeep calling. Whereâs your jacket?â
âI donât need it.â
âYou will. Itâs gonna get cold later. When itâs dark.âÂ
âItâll mess up my costume. Dorothy doesnât wear one.âÂ
âLet's bring it, just in case. Iâll carry it.âÂ
Steve jogs back inside, coming out this time with a camera around his neck, a jacket over his shoulder, and a plushie in hand.Â
âHere,â he sets a blue stuffed dog on Penelopeâs lap. âBackup Toto.âÂ
Penelope glares up at him, insulted. âThis isnât Toto.âÂ
âI know. But if we wait for Cinderella we might not have time for trick-or-treating. Why donât we bring the treats? See if sheâs started without us?âÂ
Penelope deflates, stuffing the dog in her wicker basket.Â
âCan I take your picture now?â
âWhy, Daddy?âÂ
âSo I can remember how beautiful you look tonight.âÂ
A petulant bow creases her lips as she peers up. Round, sullen eyes connect with his.Â
Steve squats in front of her, taking her much smaller free hand in his. âI know youâre sad about Cinderella but sheâd still want you to have fun, right? And she might show up later. I just want to get a picture now so I donât forget.âÂ
Penelope nods and Steve kisses her forehead, standing and backing up a few paces.Â
âSmile, baby. Please?â He blinks at her through the viewfinder.Â
She offers a strangled faceâ more of a toothy open mouth than a smile; not even close to wide enough to round her cheeks or crescent her eyes like the real deal. But itâs funny and just as cute. Steve snaps a photo and the expression drains from her face as fast as the cameraâs flash.
You wander behind Steve and her eyes flick to you. You try funny faces first, frowning so deep your jaw aches, pulling the tip of your nose up like a pigs, winking terribly, but none of it works. Your fingers arch into bunny ears behind Steveâs hair and you stick your tongue out at the back of his head, but still, no dice.Â
You have a really awful idea. Youâre pretty sure you might die of embarrassment. But itâs worth it to get Penelope to smile.Â
âHey, Penelope? Remember when you told me dinosaurs are silly?âÂ
She nods.Â
âWell, I have a really good dinosaur impression. Can I show you?âÂ
She nods again, equally jaded.Â
You take a deep breath and shake your head, mentally preparing yourself and simultaneously erasing Steve from existence for the moment. A feral screech erupts from the back of your throat, the kind of sound you didnât know for sure you could make.Â
Steve buckles in his crouch, barely catching himself on the pavement with his free hand. A chorus of emotions ripple his features. Heâs shocked and then amused and finally focused on capturing the picture, but what resonates the most is a fondness for you.Â
You cup a hand over your mouth, rendering a string of different noises, inspired by several animals because what the hell does a dinosaur sound like anyway? You havenât the faintest clue at the moment.  Â
Penelope fuses her lips together, unbreaking.Â
âCome on Nell, I see that smile,â Steve rallies.Â
But she doesnât give up easy. Sheâs like Steve in that way.Â
As a last resort, you press your lips to your mouth, blowing a raspberry and screwing your face in disgust. âOh my God, Steve! Did you just fart?âÂ
He gapes at you, then Penelope, tickled and tongue-tied for comebacks. He canât think straight, not when youâre making a delightful fool out of yourself, on his behalf, especially. As far as heâs concerned, Penelopeâs smiling now or at least failing awfully at hiding it. So he takes several photos of her as she unravels into a giggly heap on the driveway.Â
Certainly one of them is photo-album-worthy, but you continue your stunts anyway. âGoodness, what did you eat today?â You backpedal a few steps, fanning the surrounding air, partially to hide your own laugh. âPenelope do you smell that?âÂ
âEw! Daddy!âÂ
You arenât sure if Penelope actually believes you or if she just wants to join the fun but either way, sheâs convincing.Â
âI didnât do it!â Steve defends, dropping the camera on its sling and raising his hands in surrender. âI think it was Penelope this whole time.âÂ
You gasp. âPenelope!âÂ
âI didnât!â She cries, shaking her head aggressively. âI promise, I didnât!âÂ
âI dunno. The closer I get the more stinky it smells.â Steve slinks up to her with outstretched hands that threaten tickles.Â
She screams when he snatches her up, swearing up and down, âI didnât, Daddy!âÂ
Heâs well-practiced at being the tickle monster; knows every sensitive strip of skin to target. She was doomed from the start. Giggles spill out in jagged layers punctuated with gasps of air. Steve tickles her all the way down the driveway to the car, out of breath himself by the time he sets her on the trunk.Â
Penelope deliriously eyes his hands where they rest on the beamer.Â
âYou ready to go trick-or-treating, Little Miss Dorothy?â You ask.Â
She nods, dimples deepening with mirth.
âHere. Will you start it?â Steve fishes his keys out of his pocket and tosses them to you. âCome on, pretty girl.âÂ
She slides into her car seat happily, bouncing with excitement as he buckles her in. Steveâs told you before itâs not always so easy.Â
âI really didnât fart,â Penelope says.Â
He chuckles, sewing a kiss to her cheek, âI know, baby. Weâre just kidding.âÂ
Steve settles into the driverâs seat, depositing the stack of developed polaroids in your lap. You shuffle through as he backs out, flashing him your favorites; the best is one where sheâs planted a hand on her hip and is rolling her eyes. You adore this little drama queen more and more every day.Â
The driveâs only a few minutes, just to a denser part of the neighborhood to avoid long stretches with no houses. Steve parks against an empty grass lot behind another car. This areaâs already bustling with kids which adds to Penelopeâs anticipation.Â
âDaddy, lookâ itâs Minnie Mouse!âÂ
Steve inspects the crowd through the window. âYeah, you remember when you were Minnie Mouse?âÂ
âI was?âÂ
âMhmm. You had ears and I painted your face. You were little.â He unbuckles, grabbing the backpack stashed at your feet.Â
âOh. Am I still little?âÂ
He pauses to melt, just to himself and only a bit. Itâs too early to be sentimentalâ a long night of fun awaits. Steve cranes over his seat to see her face. âYes, youâre still little. But youâre growing a lot. I think you might be as tall as me, one day.âÂ
âNooo,â she giggles, waving her foot at him.Â
âI dunno,â he sing-songs back, squeezing her shoe before turning back around.Â
Steve distributes a handful of glowsticks, shoving a few extra in Penelopeâs basket. You guys start down the block as the sun sinks below the treeline, more than enough time to complete Penelopeâs plan which she reminds you of. She takes Steveâs hand, then yours, and it strikes you suddenly how much you appear as a family to outsiders. Itâs not an unwelcome feeling, just a strange one.Â
At the first house, Penelope knocks hard and declares to the elderly woman who answers, âTrick or treat!â She repeats it, insisting with wide eyes that she deserves two pieces of candy for her double effort. And the woman canât resist her charm, obliging with a handful of pieces. Steve jokes it off, calls her a bargainer, but you gawk at the interaction.Â
At the second house, she points to you and Steve, arguing you deserve candy too since youâre both in costume. And it works, scoring you each a piece that ends up in her tote anyway. By the third, you canât keep a straight face, her antics are hilariously cute and you compliment Steve for raising such a little mastermind.Â
You fall into a routine steadily, loafing along the road with Steve while Penelope trots up to each house.Â
âLast year she was Snow White and the year before a cat,â Steve explains when you ask.Â
âShe likes princessesâ.âÂ
âLess so now but yeah. She used to say she wanted to be a princess when she grew up.âÂ
âCanât blame her.â You watch her fondly from afar. She picks a piece of candy off the ground and debates before tossing it in with the others. âWhat does she wanna be now?âÂ
âChanges all the time. Last it was a detective.â He beckons Penelope over. âNell, what do you want to be when you grow up?âÂ
She fiddles with her basket handle. Youâve done two streets and itâs almost full. You're starting to think youâll have to buy a pillowcase off of someone.
âUmm⌠Can I be a trick-or-treater?âÂ
âWhat!â Steve flips her braid over her shoulder, âThatâs just for one day, goofball.âÂ
âWell⌠then,â she hums, squinting at the surrounding swarm of characters and creatures. âMaybe a pirate?âÂ
You and Steve share a look of amusement. You do that a lot now. Itâs instinctual. Finding each other's eyes, even in a room full of people itâs easy. Sometimes thereâs just too much joy not to share.Â
âDaddy, how many houses are left?âÂ
âThereâs quite a few on this street. You tired?âÂ
âNo. Can I see? I want to count.âÂ
She doesnât seem tired to you but Steveâs able to read her with the tiniest details. Itâs like heâs got superpowers sometimesâ dad superpowers. But maybe heâs just guessing, itâs getting closer to bedtime.
Steve boosts her onto his shoulders with a hefty groan about âgetting oldâ which you bicker over because heâs only twenty-six.Â
Penelope counts eleven houses, eight with lights on, but buzzes about a particular home illuminated with rainbow LEDs and a giant spider. And itâs even cooler than she described up close, mansion-like, decked out with spotlights and decorations taller than you and Steve combined.
A motionless clown holds a bloody bucket of candy outside. Their decorations are so extravagant, itâs hard to tell whatâs real and whatâs fake. But youâre pretty sure the clown just blinked and you make sure Steveâs aware of that, not that he was letting Penelope go alone anyway.Â
Steve scoops Penelope up before she gets very far up the driveway despite her complaints.Â
âIâm not scared, Daddy,â she assures. And thereâs nothing that tells you she isâ sheâs just as cheery and bright-eyed as before.Â
âI know, princess.â He rubs her arm, scanning for other statues with the potential to come alive. âIâm kinda scared, though.âÂ
She tips her head at him, puzzled because itâs always the other way around. But her arms coil around his neck, a loving press of affection that she learned from him.Â
And whether heâs actually afraid to be jumpscared or just subconsciously ingraining in her that itâs okay if she is, you arenât really sure. Probably both, and either way, it warms your insides.Â
The clown cocks its head slowly when Penelope reaches in the bowl.Â
She cocks her head back, innocently amused. âTrick-or-treat?âÂ
The clown nods, pushing the bowl toward her.Â
Steve sags just a hair but remains very much on high alert.Â
You mouth your appreciationâ âThanks.â Thanks for not scaring my coworker-friends-child who Iâve grown really fond of and would hate to see cry.Â
âDaddy, can we go in there?â Penelope points to a tunnel opening, fringed with black streamers and flashing lightsâ some sort of haunted house walk-through that wraps around the home.Â
âNo, baby. Thatâs for big kids.âÂ
She spots a group of teenagers exit the other side, screaming, laughing, and doubling over each other into the grass.Â
âI really wanna goâ please, Iâll be so brave. Iâm not even scared,â she pleads, flashing him a wobbly frown.Â
But thereâs no expression she could pull right now that would change his mind, not when he hears a chainsaw buzzing inside. She could throw herself on the ground and kick and cry and heâd still refuse. He knows enough kids that have been traumatized by horror-movie-type creatures and characters; heâll be damned if his daughter becomes one of them.Â
Penelope sulks for a few houses but she has loads more candy to collect and decides not to waste her time for too long.Â
âCan you hold this?â She thrusts her basket toward Steve. Itâs overflowing at this point; youâve all started cramming candy in your pockets, hoping itâs cold enough outside that nothing melts. Steveâs been beating himself up for three blocks for forgetting the backpack in the car.Â
âSure,â he says, retracting his hand from his pocket.
But before he takes it, you joke, âBetter keep an eye on him. He might eat some when youâre not lookinâ.â
Penelope studies him for a long moment before shifting the bag toward you.Â
âPenelope! You donât really believe that do you?â He scoffs, breathily laughing.
You cackle as she shrugs and sprints to the next house.Â
Steve bumps your shoulder, snaking a hand in the basket to steal a pack of M&Ms off the top. âBlowinâ my whole operation.âÂ
âSteve,â you scold and bump him back. âDonât get me in trouble.âÂ
âShe wonât notice.â He waves you off, tearing the wrapper with his teeth. âBut if she does Iâm saying it was you.âÂ
You whack his arm, glowing bright as the moon, âAsshole.âÂ
Penelope doesnât complain about her feet aching once the whole night and you know they probably do because yours started hurting forever ago. Surely she gets some kid-sized Oscar for that. And Steve being the great dad he is offers to carry her on the way back to the car anyway.Â
âDaddy?âÂ
Steve hums, hoisting her up where she slips.Â
âCan we go trick or treating tomorrow?â
He glances at you, confirming you also hear this cuteness. âNo, baby. Tomorrowâs not Halloween.â
âI know, but we should still go. I bet lots of people still have candy. Like, leftovers.â She yawns into his shoulder where his fur hood has been tugged down to warm his neck and double as a makeshift pillow.Â
âDonât you have enough candy?â
âNo. I need more Reeseâs for you.â
âYouâre gonna give them to me?â
âOnly some. I like them too.âÂ
âThatâs kind of you.âÂ
Her eyes are half-lidded and struggling, but sheâs still awake as Steve stows her into her car seat. She chatters sluggishly to keep herself up and you and Steve entertain it; itâll make bedtime easier if she doesnât fall asleep in the car. Perhaps handing her a pack of Smarties was overkill because apparently, it has enough sugar to wire her longer than the five-minute drive home.Â
No slower than Steve can lock the front door, Penelope dumps the contents of her bag on the floor. A bouquet of candy wrappers, big and small, enough to last her months if sheâs patient.Â
âYou can have five more pieces tonight.âÂ
Penelope smirks at Steve before heâs even finished. âTen?âÂ
âSix. But you have to brush your teeth for twice as long.â Before she can rebuttal he shakes his head. âFinal offer.âÂ
âFine,â she huffs, combing through her pile. She sorts them into categories while Steve prepares her bath. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is already onâ Steve has a bad habit of forgetting to turn the TV off when he leavesâ but you find the remote when Penelope asks you to turn the volume up.Â
âYou can have these,â she announces, pushing a chunk of her goodies toward you. Itâs mostly things she doesnât like: twizzlers and dark chocolate and anything with peanuts. But she did sneak in one of your favorites youâd mentioned earlier that night. She really is a sweetheart.Â
âThank you, Penelope. Thatâs very nice of you.âÂ
âThese are for Daddy,â she points to a second pile, smacking loudly on the gummy bear she just decapitated. âHe loves chocolate but he got a cavity once because he ate too much.âÂ
âAre you talking about me?â Steve hollers, clambering down the stairs two at a time.Â
âNo?â Penelope giggles.Â
His hands snap to his hips once he treks into the living room. âAlright, itâs bath time then bedtime Miss Dorothy.â
Penelope looks utterly betrayed. Sheâs only eaten three things andâ âItâs not even late yet,â she whines.Â
He pretends to check his watch, âIt is.âÂ
Itâs not but she canât tell time yet.Â
âCan we watch Oz, Daddy, please? Thereâs no school tomorrow, âmember?â
âWe watched it last night, peanut. Why donât we watch a Halloween movie?âÂ
Peanut, pumpkin, princess, he calls her all sorts of cute things. Is it wrong to wish he called you cute things too?Â
âI wanna watch Oz. Iâm Dorothy so we have to.â She drags out the last syllable until she runs out of breath.Â
Penelopeâs over-tired. Delirious and whiny and easily hysterical when she doesnât get her way. And itâs not that Steve thinks he should give in when sheâs like this, heâs just tired too. And youâre here and itâs the weekend so what will one movie really do? He can guarantee sheâll fall asleep during it anyway.Â
âOkay. Only if youâre super-duper fast in the bath.â
She shouts and whizzes upstairs.Â
Steve diverts his attention to you, âYou wanna stay? I can make popcorn.âÂ
Of course, youâd love to stay, and not just for the promise of popcorn, but youâre afraid if you do, youâll never want to leave.Â
âAre you sure?âÂ
âWhy wouldnât I be?â He makes a faceâ a ridiculously lovely one. âGo sit. Weâll be quick.âÂ
They arenât quick but there are photo albums on the coffee table that youâre happy to look through in the meantime. You flick through beats of their life like stills of a movie. There are baby photos, school pictures, movie stubs, plane tickets, and several people you donât know the names of. Itâs weirdâ getting snippets of things about them you had no idea of. Youâre filling the gaps as you go.Â
Penelope returns first, frolicking her way to the entertainment center in fresh pajamas. Sheâs on a mission by the looks of it, making a mess of the VHS collection in the cabinet. By the time Steve arrives, most of the films are splayed across the carpet.Â
âOz is already in, silly goose. We watched it yesterday remember?âÂ
Penelope drops the tape in her hands, âOh.âÂ
Steve hunches over her, slotting the films away one by one. She doesnât help much, but he doesnât seem to mind.Â
Penelope clambers onto the couch beside you and Steve beside her. Itâs a long sectional, enough room for several others. But Penelope scoots in right beside you so you're hip to hip. And Steve makes himself comfortable more in the middle cushion than the farthest.Â
His onesie has been traded for sweats and his whiskers scrubbed awayâ though a faded, gray smear crosses his jawline. You consider telling him, or licking your thumb and scratching it away yourself, but it makes you feel less weird to be the only one still in costume so you let it stay.Â
âI like these,â you tug the cotton pant leg of Penelopeâs outfit. Itâs a matching set, frilly and plaid with a black cat stamped to the torso.
She tucks her lower lip away sheepishly and pushes her crown into your shoulder. Her hair's damp, soaking your sleeve cold, but you fawn at the affection more than anything.Â
âDid you find that picture? From her first birthday? I think itâs in there.â Steve gestures toward the closed album in your lap with the remote but remains glued to the TV.Â
âNo, I didnât finish looking.â
âI wanna see,â Penelope arches over your legs, prying the book open.Â
Steve rewinds the film to the start and pauses it so he can look too.Â
You thumb the plastic sheet over a recent image of Penelope scrunching her nose at the camera, a riot of stickers across her face.Â
âRoRo!â She taps the photo beside it. Itâs a haphazard blur, most likely captured by Penelope; you make out the shape of Steve first, then the less angular, slightly shorter personâ a woman, RoRo. You think Penelopeâs mentioned her before but nothing about the picture rings any bells.Â
âMhmm. Thatâs Robin. Remember this was at the airport?âÂ
âIs that when we got pizza?âÂ
âYeah!â Steve rubs her arm. âYou have a good memory.â Â
You turn the page, revealing a set of grainy, blue-tinted photos from the same roll of film. Steve looks young for his age now, but he looked like a baby then. Strangely though when thereâs an actual infant in his arms. He was thinner then but even softer in the face. Not unhappy, per se, but maybe missing a lightness he has now. Â
âThis was on my twenty-third birthday,â he explains. âLook how little you were!â
âDid I eat cake?âÂ
âNo, you were too young, baby.â He chuckles, pointing to another photo. âYou tried a banana for the first time in this one.â
âI like bananas.â
âYou didnât used to.âÂ
Steve and Penelope share slices of their pasts fondly. You study the photos, compare these reflections to the people you find yourself next to. Thereâs an unexpected pinch in your chestâ not getting the chance to know these versions of them, it makes you sad. But itâs a happy sort of sad. Youâre grateful to know them now.Â
Penelope begs to flip through another album but Steve decides itâll be too late to finish The Wizard of Oz if they do. His true reluctance stems from how emotional the first one made himâ though youâll pretend not to notice for his sake.Â
Steve bets Penelope an extra Reeses that sheâll fall asleep by the time Dorothy meets the scarecrow. Itâs unfair, really. You tell Penelope not to pinky promise it but she does. And she loses awfully, yawning within five minutes and startling herself awake within ten. You scoff when Steve starts carding through her hairâ her guaranteed snooze switch. Itâs evil and you tell him so. So of course, that finishes her off long before Scarecrow makes an appearance; she curls into Steveâs side and digs a heel into yours. Poor girl never stood a chance.Â
âShe had a lot of fun tonight,â Steve utters. Itâs alarming at first, how his voice eclipses the TV like there isnât a child snoring against his stomach. But she doesnât stir. He knows she wonât.Â
âDid you?â You ask, skating between a whisper and not.Â
âVery much. You?âÂ
âMhmm. Loads,â you answer without hesitation. Itâs possibly the easiest question anyoneâs ever asked you. âI think Penelopeâs right.â
He quirks an eyebrow against the front of the couch. His cheek is sinking further into the cotton like he might fall asleep.Â
âWe should go trick-or-treating tomorrow too.âÂ
His lips wane into a soft smile. If he wasnât so drained he might laugh too. âWhat should we be? Penelope has a strict no-repeat costume rule.âÂ
You hum, scraping your memory for the best costumes youâd seen. There were Power Rangers and Ghostbusters and several Batmen with their Catwomen. But the image of one young family sticks out the most in your mind. A young pair of parents with their son and daughter decked in moody black and white.Â
âAddams family?âÂ
âWhoâs who?âÂ
âSheâs Wednesday. Obviously.â
Steve chuckles, accidentally too loud and Penelope twitches against his thigh. He draws her against his chest readily and strokes her spine with the back of his hand. âObviously,â he whispers.Â
âYouâre Morticia and Iâm Gomez, though.âÂ
âOh?â
âYeah. Sheâs tall and pretty. Strong jawline, kinda sassy. I think youâll make it work.âÂ
Youâre flirting. You know you are as soon as you say it. And you donât mean to, it just happens; the words come intuitively as blinking. Your brain does all sorts of crazy things around Steve.Â
âYou think Iâm pretty?â Heâs smiling hard. You canât tell if heâs serious or not.Â
âPretty sassy, yeah,â you deflect. Itâs a safer truth than admitting you do think heâs pretty.Â
He rolls his eyes. âMy mom says Nell gets her attitude from me. Says itâs payback for how I was as a child.âÂ
You gawk emphatically. âWere you a bad kid Steve Harrington?â
âI wasnât badâ just needed attention I think.âÂ
You hum. Itâs a little surprising since you know Steveâs an only child to wealthier parents. Youâd pegged him to be spoiled in both money and attention.
âAre you close with your parents?â
He shakes his head, âNot really. Talk every now and then.â
âSorry.âÂ
âDonât be. I came to terms with it a while ago. Even more after she was born.â He skims his lips against Penelopeâs head. âI canât imagine not being in her life. You know, not really knowing her? Not knowing her favorite things or when sheâs hurting or what sheâs up to every second of the day. I donât think thatâll ever change.â Â
âSheâll be so grateful to have that kind of relationship when sheâs older.âÂ
âYeah, maybe. Like way older.â His shoulders droop as he sighs, âShe already thinks Iâm smothering her. Wouldnât hold my hand yesterday because sheâs âtoo bigâ she said.âÂ
âAlready?â You laugh.
âI know!â He groans. âI almost cried.âÂ
âShe loves you. Kids just show it in strange ways.âÂ
âYeah⌠She forced me to hold a slug last week.âÂ
âYou held it?âÂ
âI had to! She was so excited to give it to me.â
âAww. Youâre a good dad.âÂ
Steve's eyes caper down and his cheeks pinken. âIâm trying to be.âÂ
Apart from the movie and an occasional sleep sigh from Penelope, silence swallows the room. Itâs a comfortable silence; the kind you only get around people youâve known forever; It feels like youâve known Steve your entire life. You have to remind yourself itâs only been a few months. Remind yourself this is the first time youâve ever even hung out.Â
You find yourself drifting to the future. A future, with Steve and Penelope. Vacations and school events and hiking trips and movie nights and so much more. Itâs silly. It makes your heart want to rip itself from your chest.Â
Steve clears his throat. Your fantasy is only partially dissolved. âIâm gonna take her upstairs. Put her to bed.âÂ
You lean forward and press into your knees, gearing to stand. âOkay. I should get going. Itâs late.âÂ
âStay for a minute. Iâll walk you out.â
You have no reason to decline but even if you did, you arenât sure you would be able to. Saying no to Steve is as hard as saying no to Penelope. They have the same puppy-dog eyesâ brown and soft as sun-baked clay. That must be it.Â
Steve strains to stand with the added weight. Heâs strong but Penelopeâs four now and having growth spurts like thereâs a race to be the tallest kid in school. She clings to him instinctually, slotting her face into his neck like it was sculpted specifically to be her pillow. Her gangly legs sway against his thighs as he slowly climbs the stairs and disappears onto the landing. Â
You donât notice Steveâs return. Heâs much quieter than before, taking softer steps and more calculated movements. He doesnât have the buffer of his body heat to soothe Penelope back to sleep if she wakes. The palm on your shoulder startles you.Â
He whispers an apology from behind the couch, voice sweet and buttery as caramel. You let him guide you the short distance to the front doorâ expecting it to end thereâ but he presses into a pair of laced sneakers thrown beside the entry table.Â
The nightâs chill is jolting, even in your coat. Itâs easy to forget the months are slipping into winter when Steveâs around. He radiates warmth, not just in sun-kissed skin and honeyed eyes, but in his tone and his touches and every aspect of his spirit. And it bleeds like a fire. Brushes your cheeks like flames and stirs perpetually in your belly like magma.Â
He walks you the entire length of his driveway to your car. Probably wouldâve opened the door for you if you didnât beat him to it.Â
âThank you for inviting me Steve,â you say, lingering in the threshold of your open door.Â
âThank you for coming. Iâm really happy you came. So is Penelope.âÂ
âAs much as I am looking forward to The Addams Family next year, we should plan something⌠maybe a little sooner?âÂ
âMmm. Let me check my schedule first,â he teases, rapping his fingers against the roof of your car.Â
âWhatever, boss-man.â
You still donât get in. Thereâs a stretch of silence, not awkward, just a placeholder for when the right words come. And they donât. Not tonight anyway. You could hug him? Peck his cheek? Pat his back as he might yours?Â
You settle for a safe and simple tight-lipped smile. He appreciates it just the same.Â
âSee you Friday?â He asks.Â
âSee you then.âÂ
Steve guides the door closed after you settle in. He waits until your taillights have completely fizzled out in the shadows of his street to stroll back up to his house.Â
He thinks of you as he locks the front door and again as he finds your hat on the sectional and a third time as he slips under his sheets. Steve isnât sure what to do. He feels sick. His heart is hammering and his gut twists itself in knots like it does when heâs afraid. He hasnât quite figured out what about you is so scary but how can he possibly wait until Friday to find out?Â

The first time I saw him was when I was down in the lobby, six months ago, all sorts of excited and nervous as I was waiting for my AR to show me to my room for the university year. My mother had been clinging to my arm, her eyes just as wide and curious as mine as we were looking around while giggling to ourselves about the decoration and any guy that passed by us. My father, much less impressed and excited, stood more to the back with his arms crossed in front of his chest, probably thinking of a possible excuse to save himself from having to help his only daughter move into her future dorm room. So very typical of my dad, yeah.
I was chewing on my nails, watching as another AR came down to greet the newcomersâtoo busy wincing as I ripped up the cuticle of my thumb accidentallyâto notice the sudden presence next to me. My mother was reading through a magazine she found at the front desk, lips pursed as she muttered to herself about the atrocious dĂŠcor the magazine was advertising just as my fatherâs phone started ringing.
Ah, there it was, his excuse to stake out in the car and do whatever he can to pass the time. Very cool, dad, yay!
I hissed as I finally was able to bite off the annoying thin layer of skin, stinging radiating up from my thumb to my palm. Nothing I couldnât handle. I sighed as I wiped the smallest drop of blood off my skin and looked up, only to pause as I made eye contact with the figure standing next to me. I blinked once, twiceâquite shamelessly letting my eyes roam all over his figure as I took him inâaura dark and definitely screaming, âI will kill you if you even as much as touch me, roachâ. Well, isnât that just so cool?!
The guy was taller than me by a few good inchesânothing high heels couldnât solveâand despite his all-black outfit, he looked excentric, attention demanding. Well, with the tattoos littering his sleeves and neck, it wouldâve been a little hard not to demand for oneâs attentionâeven if he was just standing next to me, sharp eyes narrowed at my still gently bleeding thumb. His face looked like it was sculpted by a Greek God itself, who had taken their time to make sure every single feature of his guyâs was perfect. His jaw was all sharp in this angle, making one appreciate his profile even more. His lips were rosy red, and a silver lip ring towards the left corner of his mouth had my eyes lingering on it a second too long as I noticed it cut into his plush looking flesh. His nose stood tall and quite captivating with its special Romanic feature, not very common around here. I took notice of the mole underneath his left eye as well, my gaze slowly shifting to the two silver dotsâpiercingsâunderneath his eye that made his gaze even more alluring than it already was. And his eyes seemed to be uneven, the left one sharper and more monolided than his right one, making it feel like you were looking at two different persons depending on which eye you were staring at.
Almost at once, it seemed like my mother and father finally noticed this extremely intriguing guy standing next to me, however, their reactions seeing him were quite different. My father scoffed and gave him a scrutinizing look before walking off, motioning towards his phone in a way that was supposed to convey the fact that it was an important call, yadda yaddaâit wasnât; meanwhile my motherâs jaw dropped open as she very rudely gapped at the guy while nudging my side. Finally, it snapped me out of my blatant staring, and I quickly wiped the little blood off my thumb, smiling widely at the guy when our eyes met. For a moment, my smile faltered at the darkness swirling in his eyes, the depth in his sharp gaze, but as he blinked, it almost completely went away. It must be the light messing with us, because his eyes were a dark brown, almost midnight black like the hair that was falling messily in his eyes. With a sexily raised eyebrow, he gave me a questioning gaze, looking displeased by the attention from my mother and myself, and then he turned and stalked off towards the elevator. I whistled under my breath and my mother giggled like a schoolgirl, muttering something about how sheâd devour him if she were young and wild once againânot cool, mom.
And after that encounter with the sexy and intriguing stranger, my RA finally made it to me and with his and my motherâs helpâthanks dad for not giving a shit, againâI was up on the fourth floor, standing inside my shared dorm room with a dormmate that I still have had yet to meet. Dorms were mixed here, so unless you specifically made a request to share the dorm with the same gender, you could end up with either a guy or a girl dormmate. I have no specific preferences, therefore I left it up to whoever was assigning us to pair me up with whoever. The dorm room had one shared living space, it was quite spacious and served well for a living room, a small kitchen that could fit at a maximum four people inside, and, thankfully, a private bathroom so that we didnât have to share it with everyone on our floor. And there were two separate rooms serving as our dormitories too. All in all, the dorm was fancy and quite to my taste, and I felt quite satisfied with it. Once I have claimed the room to my right as my own, I settled inside of it and unpacked everything, letting my mother help me as I knew she wasnât just yet ready to part ways with her only daughterâwho she thinks is sheltered, but turns out, I am quite the opposite of it.
Once my mother left and I was all settled in, I made for the bathroom for a long shower, needing a refresher as the days were still hot and made me sweat buckets. But the warm spray of the water compelled me to wash my hair as well, and I complied happily as I heard noise coming from the living room. My dormmate must have finally made it to our dorm, it made me giddy as I was finally done with my shower, only just now realizing I didnât bring clothes with myself. Well, I should have thought of that before, now it was too late, but thankfully I had my towel with me and I securely wrapped it around my body, water dripping from my hair as I walked outside and into the living room. My smile was wide and voice chirpy as I exclaimed before even seeing my dormmate, âHi! You made it! I was just taking a shower, my nameâsââ
âHell, why is your voice so high pitched?â The low grunt cut me off as my eyebrows furrowed, looking for the source of voice as I couldnât see anyone in the living room. Was my voice high pitched? Nobodyâs told me that before.
âUh, well, I guess Iâm just excited to meet you.â I made sure to lower the pitch, accidentally sounding like a creepy man that was trying to sound like he totally wasnât about to grope you or act like a freaking creep. But I still couldnât see the person, so I walked closer to the sofa, âWhere are youââ
My eyes widened as my dormmate finally came into view as he stood up, eyes still so dark as he looked unimpressed, âOh, itâs you.â
WellâŚhe didnât sound too excited, thatâs for sure. I gulped, suddenly blushing as I realized I was stood in front of the hauntingly sexy stranger from the lobby in nothing but a towel. However, to my surprise, he seemed quite uninterested as he turned back around and crouched down again. I leaned just a little forward, curious as to what he was doing crouching underneath the window, âYup, itâs me, weâve met likeâŚan hour ago? What a coincidence that weâre dormmates!â
âIf only I had a little more luck in this shitty realmâŚâ The guy grumbled underneath his breath and my eyebrows furrowed at his peculiar choice of words, oh, was he likeâŚinto some type of fantasy stuff? LikeâŚdoes he think heâs like an elf or an alien or likeâŚa zombie? Wait, no, heâs too sexy and normally behaving to think heâs a zombie, âIâm Wooyoung, by the way. Jung Wooyoung.â
I quickly plastered on a wide smile as he stopped and turned back, eyes calculating as he raised one eyebrow, âNice to meet you, Wooyoung! My nameâs Hwang Y/N.â
His eyes narrowed for a second before he grunted again and turned back to whatever he was doing, my curiosity only growing as I kneeled on the sofa and leaned against the back of it, craning my neck. As he moved to the side again, I noticed he held a small bowl in his hands which contained something solid and white. Huh, is it salt?
âSo, whatcha doing, Woo?â I grinned as he turned around again, looking quite disgusted.
âMy name is Wooyoung, not Woo.â His tone was snappy as he pursed his lips, giving me a once over again, âAnd Iâm putting salt underneath the window, donât want anyone with a big ego and stupid brains coming inside.â
âIsnât that why we lock the front doors?â I arched an eyebrow as confusion laced my voice, and Wooyoung just blinked as if he was waiting for me to get to the butt of the joke.
âHumans,â He hissed underneath his breath before he stood up tall, knees popping and making me bite my lower lip before I could chuckle. It was funny for no reason, apparently only to me as Wooyoung looked still as unimpressed as ever, âAnyways, Y/N, I have some ground rules that youâll have to respect heavily.â
âOoh, lemme hear âem.â I grinned as I leaned my chin on my folded arms over the back of the sofa, making Wooyoung sigh long and loud. Did he not like me? Was he irritated by my presence?
âFirst, and most important rule, is to never enter my room, okay?â He leaned down, face coming closer to mine as his dark eyes bore into my curious ones, âNever ever, Y/N, understood?â
I pursed my lips and hummed, tilting my head to the side, âSure, Iâll stay out of your room, butâare you like doing some rituals in there or what? You can come inside my room as long as you ask, you know, I donât mind.â
Wooyoungâs jaw tightened as his eyes narrowed again and he tsked, shaking his head a little bit, âRituals or not, human, you stay out. I bet your mommy would cry if you were to disappear.â
âShe certainly would.â I did a mock salute, making Wooyoungâs eyebrows furrow as I chuckled, leaning forward, the gap becoming smaller between our faces, âDonât you worry you weird little creatureâhumanâI wonât go inside your room. I am quite capable of respecting peopleâs wishes, you know?â
âAnyways,â Wooyoung cleared his throat and stood back up straight, crossing his arms in front of his chest, âsecond rule, if you see salt scattered around the floor or on the windowsills, do not get rid of them, got it?â
âSure, youâre lucky Iâm not some clean freak maniac, though.â I chuckled, sitting back on the sofa before I stood up, suddenly aware again that I was standing in only a towel and my hair was still dripping water everywhere.
âHell, why do you have an answer to everything?!â Wooyoung pinched the bridge of his nose before he turned his back to me and went to spread more salt underneath the window. I just chuckled and took off towards my room.
âAnything else, Mr. âI have two rules you canât ever breakâ?â I raised my eyebrows as I grabbed the doorknob and Wooyoung scoffed loudly, looking quite unimpressed when his head turned to face me.
âYeah, rule number three, donât ever touch my chocolate if you want to live another day.â I started laughing, but when I realized he was dead serious about it, I stopped and cleared my throat, mock saluting him again.
âYes, sir, yes!â Wooyoungâs eyebrows furrowed again and he closed his eyes as he muttered something, then turned back to finish whatever weirdo thing he was doing. I giggled and finally went inside my room to get dressed and dry my hair.
Well, all of that was six months ago and Wooyoung changed nothing. Albeit, I didnât change much either, apart from the fact that I cut my hair after Wooyoung accidentally managed to somehow burn the strands sitting against my back. It was a freak accident and we still donât know how the fire got close to my hair as I was sitting at the table while he was cooking us dinner. But it was quickly forgotten as many of Wooyoungâs peculiar habits and actions. If you overlooked his weirdness, he had quite the persona. I rarely saw him smile, unless he was with that obnoxiously tall blonde guy, but he did stop glaring at me nonstop. Now heâd only glare for a few seconds whenever he saw me and then pretended I wasnât even there. It was a good deal on my part, not that I had a habit of clinging to others and bothering them, but Wooyoung was quite good at setting up boundaries, and he certainly was teaching me how to stay in my lane and respect others wishes. I could be a little nosy, but Wooyoung was the first person to be bothered by it. I didnât mind as long as he would watch ghost hunting shows with me every Wednesday and Friday. He hated it, but he didnât complainâI viewed that as a small victory, especially if he bought salted caramel popcorn to snack on while we watched the new episodes.
The seasons were changing and the weather was turning warm once againâslowly but steadilyâand that also meant more storms and power outages. Which were quite frequent around our campus, especially in our building. There wasnât one storm where the power didnât go out, and the last time it happened, I heard Wooyoung cussing loudly inside his room, something shattering, and then Wooyoung storming out of his room and our shared dorm with something red trickling down underneath his eyes. He couldâve been cosplaying or something, so I didnât question it too much. Tonight wasnât different, the storm hit at around 7pm and it kept going well into the night, making it difficult for me to fall asleep as the windows were quite old in this building and did a shitty job at insulating the sounds coming from the outside. Struggling to fall asleep, I had facetimed my mother and somehow managed to fall asleep to the gory story she was retelling thatâs happened to her at the morgue yesterday. She mustâve hung up upon seeing that I have fallen asleep, because when I awoke due to the relentless and loud howling of the wind, the screen of my phone was black and the phone itself had been almost falling off my bed on the other end of the mattress. I could get quite restless in my sleep if outside factors were bothering me, and I groaned as I rubbed at my eyes, barely seeing anything in the darkness of my room. The window rattled against its hinges as the wind blew even harsher, the rain hitting the glass loudly and making me feel like I was inside a caravan on a stormy night. At least the thunderstorms havenât started yet.
I yawned as I finally felt my phone under my extended palm and rolled over, burying my head in the spare pillow as I pulled the phone under my body. I was tired as hell and I wanted to go back to sleep right away, but something told me to check the time. It was a little past 3am and I groaned as I flopped back onto my back, reaching over for the cable of my charger. Feeling around for it, and growing frustrated that I couldnât find it, I pushed up onto my elbows and turned my head over, completely freezing as I noticed my bedroom door was wide open, with a black figure standing in the doorway. My eyebrows furrowed for a second, brain hazy with sleep, and I blinked my eyes fast, thinking that I was just seeing things. But rubbing both of my eyes for a few seconds only made me see black spots, making the figure look like it was further inside my room when my vision finally cleared. My grip tightened around my phone as my eyes narrowed when I noticed something silvery in the personâs right hand. Waitâwas it a knife? Our sharpest knife, and Wooyoungâs favorite knife to cook with? Ah, Wooyoung!
âHey,â I called out, voice a little scratchy from lack of water, âsomething bothering you?â
Wooyoung seemed frozen, unmoving and unblinking as his red tongue poked out to lick at his plush lips slowly. Yeah, I could use a glass of water too right now. It was a little unsettling how well he blended in with the darkness, almost as if it swirled around him, pulled him into itself. His eyes were so dark that only the whites of them were visible, and his two piercings were almost as bright as the butcher knife clutched tightly in his hand.
âThis storm sucks so much,â I sighed, turning over and instantly finding the cable, âI could barely fall asleep, and now Iâm awake again because of it.â
I successfully plucked in my phone and then placed it on my nightstand, âYou canât sleep either?â
I rolled onto my back again, settling comfortably underneath my warm blanket as my soft pillow cradled the back of my head. Wooyoung still hasnât moved nor said anything, and a wide smile spread onto my lips at the sudden thought I got, âWanna cuddle, Woo?â
The figure grunted, the sound a lot lower than Wooyoungâs usual voice, and then it visibly shivered as I made grabby hands at him. When he still hasnât moved, I smiled brightly at Wooyoung and raised my eyebrows questioningly. Thatâs all it took for Wooyoung to snap out of his weirdly frozen state as he visibly gagged, making me pout as he whirled around quickly, knife glinting as he pressed it against his lower back. And then he was out of my room, slamming the door shut loudly behind himself, âSweet dreams, Wooyoung!â
My exclamation was probably drowned out by the heavy rain and I sighed contently as I nuzzled further into my comfortable bed, turning to lay on my belly as I felt my dreams threatening to kidnap me into dreamland once again.
The morning that followed after the storm was cold and mostly quiet. Branches had been torn off trees and they lay astray on the streets, the city maintenance were out early in the morning to clean them up so that there wouldnât be more traffic jams than usual. I was glad for once for not owning a car as I walked towards the coffee shop that is closest to our campus and university, my best friend probably already there. Heâs always way too early and then complains about me being late, when in fact, itâs always him arriving fifteen minutes early while Iâm on time. Itâs an argument weâve been having since highschool, and he still thinks heâs in the right and Iâm just bullshitting my way through the argument. The big guy, in fact, cannot lose in anything and will obliterate you if you doubt his skills or piss him off while playing games. Heâs a monster when it comes to playing games, and itâs been more than on one occasion that he managed to scare me to the point I burst out in tears. But I promise heâs the softest and kindest and safest human being youâll ever meetâas long as you keep him away from anything that he can turn into a competitive game, likeâŚwho can eat more walnuts in three minutes. Donât ask, but we ended up in the ER after that little stunt of oursâheâs allergic to nuts but he apparently wanted to prove a point. What pointâŚwe still havenât figured it out. Maybe that heâs immortal or somethingâhe isnât. He once broke his arm and cried about it for a week, it was the funniest thing ever. I still have the videos of him laying in his bed with snot running into his mouth as he sobs about losing whatever points heâs made in Valorant or somethingâI wouldnât know, Iâm not much of a gamer.
I grinned as I finally reached the coffee shop, sidestepping a couple that were giggling to each other and having no spatial awareness to someone that was trying to enter the building that they were blocking the entrance to. I pushed the heavy door open and as expected, Yunho was already sat at our usual table with a cup in his hands, gazing out nostalgically the window. I chuckled and hopped over, scaring the shit out of him as I threw my arm around his shoulders and pressed a fat kiss against his soft and chubby cheek. He spilled a little of his coffee on the table as he whined and yanked himself free from my clutches.
âYunho!â I grinned as I took a seat across from him, âI missed you!â
He looked tired as he gave me a short glare, taking a napkin to clean up the mess caused by me, âYouâre lucky I didnât spill it on my new dress pants, or else weâd be in the bathroom with your head flushed down the toilet.â
âHey!â I couldnât help but laugh as I wriggled out of my jacket and draped it over the back of my chair, placing my backpack underneath our desk, âSometimes I wonder if you really love me or notâŚâ
âYou canât guilt trip me when you made me spill my favorite coffee.â He deadpanned as he placed the cup down on the table, intertwining his fingers and placing his hands on the table, giving me a serious look. I huffed and pouted as I grabbed my own cup, knowing that it was my favorite as I raised it up to my lips, taking a tentative sip. The sweet taste of caramel invaded my senses and I hummed in content, closing my eyes.
âIâm buying next time.â I said as I placed the cup back down and leaned over the table to ruffle Yunhoâs hair.
âYou better.â He mumbled as he leaned forward, letting me pet his hair for a little longer. He loved it when others played with his hair, heâd often fall asleep in my lap if I played with his hair, âDid you get any sleep last night?â
Yunho knew I hated storms, and after having offered to sleep over last night but I declined because he had an exam today, I knew heâd be a little worried about me not sleeping much, âYeah, I struggled to fall asleep, but I did manage to sleep more than I expected.â
âThatâs good, the power went out at around seven in our building.â Yunho rolled his eyes and we both leaned back in our chairs, our legs playfully pushing at each other underneath the table, âI hate these old buildings, they are so freaking creepy. It makes me feel like Iâm a Victorian man getting haunted by my enemyâs ghost or something whenever I have to leave my room. The library is so dark too, I almost shat my pants last night when I ran into a dude in the very last aisle, you know, in the back where the light barely reaches even with the power on.â
I snorted in amusement as I fiddled with my fingers in my lap, shaking my head at my best friend, âOnly you would be in the library when thereâs a power outage, Yuyu, itâs you whoâs creepy at this point, not the possibility of encountering a sexy and hunky ghostââ
âDonât say that about ghosts, oh, my God!â Yunho gave me a disgusted look as he shivered. Heâs a tall man with broad shoulders and soft cheeks, but fierce eyes if pissed off, yet, at his core, he is just a big scaredy-cat. He hates anything paranormal related, and when I once dragged him ghost haunting with me, we ended up in the confession box the same night with him begging the priest to bless himâand meâbecause he was convinced a demon attached itself to him. It was hilarious, especially when he stole a small vial of holy water and downed it on our way home.
âAnyways,â I playfully rolled my eyes and then took another sip of my coffee, âthe power went out in our building too, but was back at 3am.â
âWhat were you doing up at 3am?â Yunho asked with furrowed brows, holding onto his warm cup of coffee.
âI dunno, the wind woke me up.â I shrugged, placing down my cup and mirroring Yunho, âAnd then I noticed Wooyoung standing in my doorway with his favorite butcher knife in his handââ
âWhat?!â Yunhoâs loud voice had heads turning our way with inquiring gazes and I chuckled, bowing my head slightly in a silent apology for being a nuisance. Then, I faced my best friend again and shushed him as he suddenly stood up from his seat from across me, and instead fell into the one right next to mine, âAre you okay?!â
âYes, Jesus, whatâs up with you, Yuyu?â I scoffed and gave him a look that said heâs crazy, making Yunho stare back at me as if I was the crazy one.
âDo you hear yourself right now?!â And before I could answer, he leaned forward and cupped my cheeks, squishing them together so that I couldnât speak, âWhat the fuck is wrong with that dude, Y/N, you seriously need to change dormmates. We can move in together, Iâll pay the bigger part of our rent, I donât care at this point. That guy is trying to kill you!â
I groaned loudly and rolled my eyes as I grabbed onto his wrists, pulling Yunhoâs hands off my cheeks as he instead grabbed onto my shoulders firmly with his long fingers digging into my turtleneck, âYou are overreacting, again. He isnât trying to kill me, Yunho, heâs just peculiar. He was probably cooking something and came to check on me as he knows I struggle sleeping when thereâs a stormââ
âRight.â Yunho cut me off with an obnoxious scoff, âHe was cooking at 3am, Y/N, sure.â
âHe does eat at weird hours, sometimes.â I shrugged and yelped when Yunho started shaking me violently.
âWake up, woman, that man is weird and probably is a serial killer, and if you donât move out youâll be his next victim, please, Y/N, when has my intuition been wrong?!â Yunhoâs voice was dripping with desperation and I bit my lower lip, blinking at him innocently.
âBack in highschool when you thought that guy you liked from drama class was gay and you kissed him at that legendary party?â Yunhoâs eyes widened into saucers, completely mortified at the mention of the cursed exchangeâwhich he have sworn never to speak about.
âShut up!â He yelped, pressing his big palm against my mouth, âWe agreed that never happened! And donât divert the subject, I am serious, Y/N. Something is very wrong with that guy and youâre just stubborn and donât want to see it, because you think Iâm only saying all of this because I hate him.â
âWell, am I wrong?â I raised my eyebrows and Yunho sighed in exasperation, his hands falling from my shoulders.
âHeâs trying to kill you, of course I hate him.â He snapped, eyebrows furrowing deeply, making me roll my eyes as I grabbed my cup and took a sip of my Caramel Macchiato.
âYuyu, you canât even pinpoint one instance when heâs tried to kill me, stop being dramaticââ
âOh, I canât pinpoint one instance?!â Yunhoâs eyebrows angrily shot up, âHow about I pinpoint a dozen then, you stupid woman!â
âIâm all ears.â I singsonged and leaned back in my chair as Yunho groaned loudly, leaning closer, as if that would make him sound less insane and make me finally agree with the way he thought things were.
âFine,â He snapped and pressed a finger against my chest quite painfully, âyou had been living with him barely for three weeks when it just so happened that there was a fire scare in your apartment, and your door was locked from the outside? Not even two weeks after that, he walked inside the bathroom while you were bathing and pushed your hairdryer into the bathtub, but thankfully it wasnât plugged in, right?! Oh, and how about on Halloween when he dressed up as Ghostface and only chased you around and got arrested when the cops realized he had a real knife as a prop?! What about, I donât know, when he quite literally broke a bottle and held it against your neck under the excuse that he wanted to see how youâd react âunder pressureâ?! Letâs not even mention him burning your hair when you were feet away from the stove. Or that time when the lunatic was playing around with throwing knives and almost fucking gauged your eye out with it? Heâs set your favorite blanket on fire, Y/N, while you were underneath it! And you said he tried to push you into the river while you were out taking photographs for your portfolio for classââ
âAlright!â I raised my hands in defeat, sighing loudly, âI do admit itâs weird how often it happens that Iâm placed in harms way whenever Iâm around Wooyoung, but they are just coincidences, Yunhoââ
âCoincidences my fucking ass!â Yunho hissed, cheeks and ears reddening from anger. I sighed defeated and placed my elbow on the table and then rested my chin in my palm with a pout on my lips. Yunho only cussed when he was really angry.
âYuyu,â I poked his hand with my left hand, lightly scratching his smooth skin with my nails, âI love and you love me, and I know you worry about me because âyou know how men areâ, but Wooyoung is inoffensive, trust me. Heâs odd and yeah, weird things happen around him, but I actually quite enjoy his personality. Heâs a rational and down-to-earth guy, he tells me as things are and heâs quite fucking good at photography. I probably passed a few of my classes due to his help, so please, try not to think of him as a serial killer.â
Yunho shook his head and looked down, timidly intertwining our fingers, making me beam at him as I knew he wasnât actually mad at me, âIâll never like him, and if you freaking disappear, Iâm going to dismember him andââ
âYou sound like a serial killer right nowââ
âAnd once the police get your case, theyâll tell me I was right, because that dude is nuts and has been trying to kill you for months now, but whatever.â Yunho scoffed and I rolled my eyes, squeezing his fingers between mine, âLetâs change the subject, I donât want to go to classes angry.â
I grinned, leaning closer to his face, âYou texted me something last night about a guyâŚâ
Yunhoâs cheeks flushed, and he yanked his hand out of mine as he stood and sat back in his initial seat, âRight, I think I have a new crush.â
I gasped, grinning from ear to ear, âLet me see him!â
Yunho cleared his throat as he unlocked his phone, his ears reddening as he opened Instagram, reluctantly turning his phone around. The guy looked familiar and I narrowed my eyes as I read his handle, wondering where I had seen him before. His eyes were sharp but he had dimples when he smiled. He looked shorter than Yunho, and that was weird, because Yunho preferred guys his height or taller than him.
âIs this Choi San?â Finally, his name clicked as I looked at Yunho with one raised eyebrow, making his eyes widen.
âYou know him?â He asked surprised, turning his phone to look at Sanâs picture, âHeâs on the universityâs hockey team, majors in sports and such.â
âI know him,â I chuckled and leaned back in my seat, knowing that Yunho will hate what I was about to say next, âand heâs on pretty good terms with Wooyoung.â
Yunhoâs face fell and he groaned loudly, throwing his head back, âGreat.â
I chuckled and grabbed my cup of coffee, sipping on it as I watched Yunho have a visible meltdown in front of me. This man, he could be so dramatic at times. And maybe I lied a little bit, maybe San and Wooyoung on âpretty good termsâ, but they did hang outâŚfor business that I couldnât disclose due to our unspoken dormmate confidentiality.
Between two-hour long classes and everlasting lectures, I was lucky enough to have a two-hour break, away from all the brain maiming material that I had to sit through and study thoroughly for our fast-approaching exams. As I still had a project to finish, I was headed to the darkroom to check out if my negatives have developed well. Itâs been a few days since I had been there, and I was curious to see how my pictures turned out. The porter of our university already knew meâlike most photography majorsâand as I knocked on his cubicleâs little window, he flashed me a grin and swiftly fetched the darkroomâs key. I thanked him as he handed it over and then I was off to the room, bouncing on my every second step as the hallways were littered with students eager to escape this hell-site. I shared their distaste for having to study so much, but I quite enjoyed what I was studying as long as it required of me to take photos and then present them to the teacher or to our class. Wooyoung, visibly to his horror, shared the same major as me and thus was forced to sit through lessons with me by his side, diligently taking notes and sometimes snorting at whatever the teacher was saying as I mockingly said it back to Wooyoung. He rarely reciprocated any of my jokes and even more rarely interacted back with me. Not that it bothered me, he usually ignored me even in the shared space of our dormâunless it came to studying and things he didnât understand. Like how a coffee maker machine worked, which was weird but I didnât say anything about it to him. He had called himself an old soul or whatever, I didnât dwell much on his words, unless he was screaming at me for accidentally sweeping up his little funky salt âbarriersâ that heâd litter our dorm with. It wasnât my fault I accidentally confused it with breadcrumbs as it was quite literally around our table in the kitchen.
The darkroom wasnât too spacious nor lit upâhence its nameâand I placed my backpack on a stool once I was inside, the door secured shut behind myself. I rolled up the sleeves of my jacket as I walked towards the hung-up strings, the ones I have put up there four days ago. I havenât developed many negatives this time as I hadnât taken many pictures, too busy studying instead of focusing on this project, but I was glad that they came out well. I gently took each one down from the string and took my time studying them, smiling as most were taken when I was hanging out with Yunho. However, there was one that was of my oh so lovely dormmate, Jung Wooyoung. He had been sitting on the floor at our coffee table in our living room when I had arrived home, too focused on scribbling things down to notice the click of our doorâs lock. I stood in the doorway and took my time to take him in, rarely being able to see a serene look on his face. He was dressed in grey sweatpants and a loose black t-shirt, the strange runic like tattoos on display on his arms. There was barely an inch of skin bare, and as he was leaned forward, his t-shirt fell a little low and exposed his neck and collarbones, tattoos similar to the ones on his arms peeking through. The black ink was thick and it made me wonder whether it hurt like a bitch or not when he got them.
I had reached inside my backpack for my camera as Wooyoungâs upper teeth got caught in his lip ring, sucking it between his bottom lip and front teeth. You see, Wooyoung isnât an unattractive guy and despite his odd behaviour, I am just a woman that appreciates gorgeous things. And so, I couldnât be blamed for wondering what the lip ring feels like when it makes contact with your own lips, whether itâs bothersome or turns you on even more. Not wanting to pass up on the moment, I quickly snapped myself out of my thoughts and snapped a picture of Wooyoung just as he looked up. He looked taken aback, eyes widened and lower lip jutting out as I grinned and waved at him. His serene expression didnât last for long, however, as his eyebrows furrowed and a glare made it onto his face. But I ignored it, like I always did, and then went up to him and joined him despite his complaints of wanting to be left alone. When I said he could go to his room and I wouldnât âbotherâ him anymore, he noted that the scent of the incense he had used was giving him a headache and he couldnât stay inside his room today. What a bummer for him, all I saw was an opportunity to finally bond!
I chuckled at the memory as I unclasped the negative Wooyoung was on and excitedly raised it up, close to my face, to see it better. But I froze at the image, wondering whether I have messed up when I was developing the image. Somehow it seemed a little distorted, not much, but if you looked close enough you could see it. The background was unnaturally dark and it almost looked like it was leaving Wooyoungâs body under a mist like form, wrapping around his neck weirdly. The black ink on his skin seemed to be almost glowing and it was his face that made my heart race a little bit, wonder whether my hands were shaky or not when I took the photograph. His eyes seemed to be brightly glowing, only the whites of them visibleâmuch like last night when he had come inside my roomâand it made my stomach stir, bringing this unsettling feeling forward in my brain. I have never been scared of Wooyoung before, there wasnât a reason as to why I would be scared of him, but now I found myself feeling uncomfortable the longer I looked at the picture. There was a creak behind me and my heart skipped a beat as I swiftly spun around, gasping in fright as Wooyoung stood with his hip leaning against a table, watching me with hooded eyes.
My heart started racing in my chest and I quickly hid the picture behind my back as I plastered on a wide smile, âWooyoung! Hi! You scared me.â
He remained emotionless as he tilted his head, pushing off the table as he very slowlyâas if I was his preyâapproached me. My heart continued to race in my chest and I wondered how I missed him coming inside the room when the doorâs handle was a little faulty and it made a lot of noise. I cleared my throat and watched him curiously, raising my eyebrows, âYouâre here to develop some pictures for our project too?â
âYeah, something like that.â Wooyoung muttered, his voice deeper than usual. I gulped and hummed quickly, trying to keep the smile on my face. I didnât understand why I felt so nervous all of a sudden, why the hairs stood up on my arms. I shared a living space with Wooyoung, weâve walked in on each other more than once when the other was showering or bathingâso why now was I feeling like I should be running away instead of waiting for him to reach me? It must be that Yunhoâs words got to me, and I was already jumpy seeing the negative. Plus, it was dark and Wooyoung was dressed in all black too, his dark eyes almost invisible as the whites of them shinned brightly. He was dressed in ripped jeans that had scribbles on both pantlegs in a language I couldnât understand, the soles of his thick boots high, making him taller. The white shirt he wore was buttoned up to his neck and peeking through the neckline of the black fuzzy sweater he had on top of it. Wooyoungâs raven hair had gotten longer these past few months and he had decided to let it grow out even longer, the strands now jelled back and falling messily in his eyes. Eyes, which were outlined with dark eyeshadow and kohl eyeliner, making him look menacing for once. His many earrings matched his silver piercings, and I felt myself step back when he was stood in front of me.
My heart was now racing so fast I could feel the vein thump in my neck, making it harder to breathe when a smoky and intense scent hit my nostrils, Wooyoungâs perfume had always been distinctive and strong, âGot something you want to show me?â
I gulped, eyebrows furrowing as Wooyoung took another step, backing me back up into the closet behind me. I chuckled and shook my head, feeling confused all of a sudden. His expression bore no emotions, but his lips slightly twitched and his eyes narrowed, and I could swear he looked almost amused.
âN-no, not really.â His lips pulled into a smirk and then he reached out, making me freeze as his arm went around my hip and his cold fingers lightly traced the back of my palm until he gripped the negative I was holding, and ripped it out of my grip. My eyes widened and I coughed as he chuckled, raising an eyebrow mockingly, âOh, IâI took that when we were studying, remember?â
âI rarely forget things, Y/N.â Wooyoungâs voice dripped with honey, sounding too nice compared to how he usually talked to me, âYou took this photo without my permission, now look how it turned out.â
I gulped and looked at it again as he turned it around for me to see, making me inhale deeply. Something still wasnât right with the picture, but I suppose I fucked up when I had developed it. I exhaled and leaned back against the closet, giving him an easy smile, âItâs not you, I probably messed up developing it.â
Wooyoungâs eyebrows shot up in surprise and his smirk widened, he was almost leering, âItâs not me looking like a monster of your nightmares, but you messing up the developing of it?â
âYup,â I shrugged and took the photo from his grip, smiling brightly again, âand I donât have nightmares so I wouldnât know what those sleep demons look like.â
Wooyoungâs sharp eyes narrowed and he leaned incredibly close, making me gulp as I laughed nervously under my breath, feeling a little weird due to our sudden proximity. He usually fled the room if I was inside it, and if we happened to accidentally touch heâd glare at me and rub at his skin as if I had rabies or something, âWould you like to meet one?â
âNot really,â I scoffed, quite glad that I had my peaceful sleep every night, âbesides, I have my own little demon living with me, why want another one?â
âWhat?â Wooyoung froze, expression falling as I giggled and playfully pushed his shoulder.
âYouâre a little rascal,â I started, giving him a smug look, âyou act like you hate me, but I know deep down youâre secretly into me.â
Wooyoung scoffed as if I had said something very inconvenient to him, and he crossed his arms in front of his chest, âI cannot stand you, Y/N, youâre too cheery and irritating.â
âSure.â I giggled and leaned forward, our faces merely inches away once again. Wooyoungâs eyes flickered down for a second, then all over my face before he was back to glaring deeply into my eyes, âAre you possessed by a little demon or something? Is that why you sometimes act so animus?â
Wooyoung chuckled, his lip pulling back into a smirk as he turned his head and leaned forward, lips brushing against my ear. I froze once again, taken aback by how bold he was being. Like I had said, he hated it when we touched.
His lip ring felt weird against my warm ear, and I gulped as his voice had dropped lower than ever before, âWouldnât you like to know?â
I would, very much so.
Today has been a long day. It almost felt like it never wanted to come to an end. Maybe because Iâve been studying all day long, blessed as our one and only Friday class got cancelled due to our professor catching a nasty flu, and so, I could sleep in and thenâŚstudy all day long thanks to my misfortune. It was tiring, brain maiming, and absolutely atrociously torturous. But I have survived it and now Iâm twice as smart as I was before I thought of looking through the professorâs power point presentations and the book he wrote and selflessly promotes every chance he gets. I mean, I get it, money from a side hustle always comes in quite handy. But the torture and suffering are over now, and all I have to do is get ready for tonightâs movie date with Yunho! We had been planning on having a movie night for quite a while now, but failed to find an evening when we were both free. We have agreed that as long as Yunho brought the snacks and alcohol, Iâd be the one cooking for the night. Which turned out to be a fun and entertaining feat to do after the day I have had. The little speaker connected to my phone was blasting my favourite ass-shaking music as I cooked the ramen, probably having bought too much for just two people. But that wasnât an issue, at least Wooyoung and I would have leftovers for tomorrow. The little sausages were the first thing I got to prepare as I fried them in a pan in a little sunflower oil since they work well with corn-cheese and the ramen I was preparing.
I was in the middle of stirring the ramen with one hand and putting more mayo into the bowl containing the corn as I was nearly shouting the lyrics of the song playing, unaware of the presence lurking behind myself. I raised my right hand holding the spatula in the air, hitting the beat as I scratchily whipped out my best high note to match the singerâs, shaking my ass in the process as I whirled around, jumping just slightly forward. Something cold and sharp poked my abdomen where my crop top had ridden up, and my eyes widened as I jumped in fright having come face to face with my dormmate, Wooyoung. His expression was cold and very unimpressed, brows set in a deep frown and lips pulled into a grimace that screamed disgust, andâhis favourite butcher knife was clutched tightly in his right hand, the sharp edge of it pressing just slightly against my flesh.
âWooyoung!â I exclaimed with a grin and scurried off to lower the volume of my music, âHi! I didnât hear you coming in.â
âWith the way the music was blaring, Iâm not surprised.â Wooyoung hasnât moved from his spot as I went to take the cooked ramen off the stove, making way for my corn-cheese.
âSorry, figured since I was alone it wouldnât be bothering anyoneââ
âJust our neighbours.â Wooyoung muttered and then finally moved, lowering the knife as he walked up next to me, leaning against the counter. The knife was still held firmly in his hand, but upon one prolonged stare at the side of my face, he placed it on the counter with a drawn-out sigh. I flashed him a wide smile as I placed the ramen away from the edge of the counter, not wanting the pot it was cooked in to burn our skin if we were to accidentally touch it.
âYunho is coming over in a bit to watch a movie, do you mind?â I asked Wooyoung as I went back to the stove, placing another pan onto it before I poured some oil in it. Wooyoung grimaced, giving me a small glare as he suddenly approached me, pushing my hand away when I went to grab the bowl of corn, mayo, and a little bit of butter.
âMy kin is coming over too.â I giggled at the weird word he used for the term friend, already knowing who he was talking about. The tall guy, as tall as Yunho probably, was a rather intimidating guy, more so than Wooyoung was. His sharp eyes were piercing and he always scrunched up his nose when he looked at me, tilting his head as his eyes followed my every move. He was quite the oddball, but he was hilarious, and besides that Choi San guy, he was the only one who could make Wooyoung laugh so loudly that it sounded like I was living with an evil witch or something. Mingi was quite cool and rather similar to Wooyoung, I could see why the two were friends.
âIf Mingi is coming over too,â I grinned as I leaned closer to Wooyoung, but he was busy pouring the corn into the pan to notice me, âthe four of us could have a movie night!â
âAbsolutely notââ Wooyoung flinched as his head whipped around, probably surprised by the proximity. I chuckled and leaned away, grabbing the cheese as I sprinkled it over the corn in the frying pan, âMingi and I donât want to join you for your stupid movie night.â
âWooyoung,â I whined, pouting in a way I knew would irk him, âplease, I already made too much food. Mingi loves ramen and corn-cheese, you always make it for him when he comes over. Wooyoung, please, donât be a party popper!â
I knew the whiney and high-pitched tone I used would drive Wooyoung up the wall, and he squeezed his eyes shut and then hissed when I leaned closer to bat my eyelashes at him in a disgustingly cute way. He didnât appreciate it, obviously, and gave me a nasty stare.
âIâll burn you alive if you act like that ever again.â I gasped in delight as Wooyoung threw another harsh glare at me, knowing that he had given in already. I blew him a small kiss and squeezed his bicep playfully as he wore a loose sleeveless tank top. The blank ink looked to be swirling around underneath his sun-kissed skin, and my eyes lingered on them before I went to wash up the dishes I have used for cooking.
Despite Wooyoungâs initial sour mood and snarky comments, once the four of us got together, him and Yunho seemed to be enjoying themselves the most as the two of them forced Mingi and I through a variety of board games. I was in a team with Yunho and Wooyoung with Mingi, and the two were at each otherâs throats as Mingi and I sat back and let them battle it out in Activity. But Mingi, having been ogling Yunho since the second he stepped foot in Wooyoung and Iâs dorm, wanted to switch up the teams and due to his plan backfiring, the two of us were stuck as teammates in a game that we were so very embarrassingly loosing as Yunho and Wooyoung powered through all stages, obliterating us as best as they could. Having known Yunho for more than five years, I could notice the subtle jabs heâd send at Wooyoung, the way heâd âaccidentallyâ elbow him in the ribs way too often, or the way he barely let Wooyoung do his own thing once they became teammates. Wooyoung being rather smart had noticed it too, and besides the unimpressed glances and hasty glares, he let Yunho be without voicing his ever-growing irritation.
Alcohol got mixed into our games, and after we ate the dinner I had cooked, it seemed like everyone got bolder as we started randomly throwing shots back of whatever hard liquor Yunho had bought, our actions to be regretted probably tomorrow. The music was turned up to a normal volume so that it wouldnât bother our neighbours and our laughter echoed in the living room more often than not. The alcohol made my skin feel tingly and there was a pleasant buzz in the back of my head, up-lifting my mood even more as I let loose after the stressful day I have had. Yunho, tipsy but not dumb, stuck to my side as best as he could, muttering things to me about Wooyoung he had noticed, and I decided to let him be and nod along to whatever far-fetched thing he was saying. Like the fact that his tattoos looked rather like pagan sigils used in witchcraft than just normal tattoos, or the fact that his eyes continued getting hazier and darker the further we got into the night, the whites of his eyes almost glowing. And then there was his irrational fear of Mingi, flinching away any time the blonde as much as looked his way, making Yunho almost climb on my back when Mingi decided to sit next to him, their legs and shoulders brushing against each other. I had to give it to Yunho, there was something weird about Mingi that I havenât noticed before. He looked to be borderline salivating and it was almost as if he was constantly sniffing the airâand if he leaned in and took a deep waft of the air after Yunho basically ran off to the bathroom, I decided to store that away in the back of my head and analyse it another day. Similar to Wooyoung, Mingi had thick tattoos lining his chestâhe was rather fond of deep cut V tank topsâand his arms had wire-like ink decorating his fair skin. The guy sometimes looked sickly, and his platinum hair only added to his pale complexion. I have asked Wooyoung more than once if Mingi was okay, and apparently, he just rarely went out in the sun. Come to think of it, the two had similar dressing styles and even spoke similarly; maybe they are from the same province.
Before weâd sit down and start the movieâsomething Yunho has chosen and I already forgot the name ofâI went to the kitchen to mix another cocktail for myself, a lot tamer and less alcohol infused compared to the last one Mingi had mixed for me. I was in the process of pouring Vodka into my tall glass just as Yunho came basically bulldozering inside the kitchen. His eyes were wide as I looked back, and his cheeks were completely flushed, having reached his ears even. My eyebrows rose and I chuckled amused as he rushed to the sink and turned on the cold water, splashing his face and soaking the collar of his white t-shirt, his silver rosary not hidden underneath his t-shirt anymore.
âAre you okayââ Before I could finish my sentence, his head whipped around and he gave me a wide-eyed stare.
âNo!â He exclaimed and then glanced behind himself frantically, as if he was being chased by a monster and had to hide, âThat guyâMingiÂ, thereâs something very wrong with him, Y/N!â
âWhat do you mean?â I asked confused, grabbing the cranberry juice to mix the Vodka with, âDoes this have to do anything with your whole belief of Wooyoung being a serial killer?â
âBut he is!â Yunho whisper-exclaimed, crowding against my side as he leaned down so that he could continue whispering, âAnd Mingi isnât completely sane eitherâhe sniffed me in the hallway when we crossed paths when I was coming here and he was going to the bathroom! He literally leaned in, crowded me against the wall, and sniffed me, Y/N!â
I pressed my lips together and hummed, closing the lid of the cranberry juice as I grabbed a teaspoon to mix the drinks, âYeah, heâs probably drunk too. People act weird when they are drunk. Remember that one time my ex tried to jump out of a window almost blackout drunkenly?â
âThatâsâHongjoong was a freak! You canât compare him to Wooyoung and Mingi!â I leaned against the counter and raised my eyebrows at my best friend, intrigued all of a sudden where this conversation was going.
âSo are you saying you two slept together because he was a freak and not because maybe heâs not so straight and you were drunk as fuckââ Yunhoâs eyes widened into saucers and he pressed his palm against my mouth, his blush spreading down to his neck and no doubt to his chest. He looked mortified as he gaped, apparently struggling to find his words just yet.
âThatâthat wasâthatâs irreal! I neverâI didnât even know he was into me!â Poor Yunho, I tried to maintain a serious face as he spiraled even more into despair, his other hand clutching my nape, âGirl, we agreed to never bring that up, why are we talking about Hongjoong and I sleeping together, Iâwait, I thought you didnât care, Y/N, is this why you love to torture me? Because you secretly hate me?! You werenât even together anymore; you have long forgotten about him and I was on a resort on a vacation with my miserable family and he was there and he was hot and I justââ
The laughter I couldnât hold back anymore was loud and atrocious as I threw my head back, my throat starting to hurt from how loud it was. I could feel tears spring into my eyes as I held onto the counter for dear life, Yunho becoming speechless as he grabbed my glass and took a long sip of my drink. My belly was shaking and contracting from the good laugh I had, and once I had calmed down, I had to wipe my tears away. Yunho looked a mixture of angry, in despair and amused, and I threw myself at him as my arms tangled around his neck, hugging him tightly like I knew he liked it. His body was tense, but then he slowly eased up into the embrace and returned the tight hug, sighing loudly into my ear.
âBaby, Hongjoong is a closed chapterâhas been for longâIâm actually glad you got the best lay of your life with my ex, even I canât deny he wasnât good in bed.â A beat of silence passed before we burst out laughing at the same time, Yunhoâs body shaking as he nuzzled his nose against my neck affectionately, âHow the fuck did we end up talking about Hongjoong when you were just being paranoid over Mingi for no reason?â
âNot for âno reasonâ, woman!â Yunho exclaimed and pulled back, eyebrows furrowed as he grabbed my glass again and took a long sipâthere goes the drink I mixed for myself, âHe looks at me like he wants to eat meââ
âIs that so bad?â I wriggled my eyebrows suggestively and Yunho groaned, grabbing my chin.
âFocus, woman.â He pointed his finger at me in warning, and I giggled as I stuck my tongue out, licking at his hand because I knew it would disgust him, âIn an ideal setting, it wouldnât be bad, but his saliva was literally dripping down his chin, Y/N! And I donât know how else to put this into words, but he looks demonic, okay?!â
I chuckled, my eyebrows shooting up at what my best friend just said. Okay, we were apparently reaching the delirious stage of drunkenness, âWell thenâŚWooyoung and Mingi are one demonic bestie duo, huh?â
âI am being serious!â Yunho exclaimed in annoyance, fed up that I wasnât on the same wave length as him, âYouâre so irritating, you never believe me. But you will see itâs going to bite you in the assââ
âIsnât that what you want Mingi to do to youââ
âWeâre watching that movie, now!â Yunho pressed his palm against my mouth again as I giggled, grabbing a bottle of water as Yunho took my glass and pulled me after himself, back inside the living room. Mingi was sprawled out on the sofa with Wooyoung sitting in front of the bed, typing away on his phone. As Yunho and I barged inside, Wooyoung lowered the volume of the music and Mingi sat up, eyes almost glowing as he leered in Yunhoâs direction. My giant best friend grimaced and gave me a pointed stare as he went to fetch the remote control.
âAre we watching that movie now?â Wooyoung asked unimpressed, raising one eyebrow as I plopped down on the pillow next to him, leaning close as I grinned.
âYes, excited?!â
âNo, Iâd rather be sleeping.â Wooyoung muttered and gave me a short glare before he grabbed the glass Yunho had placed on the coffee table to take a long sip of it.
âHey! I made that drink for myself, why is everyone else drinking it but me?!â I whined and slapped away Wooyoungâs hand as he placed it back onto the coffee table, barely anything in the glass anymore, âAsshole.â
Wooyoung smirked as he looked at me, making me roll my eyes at him. Yunho, huffing loudly as he ruffled his brown hair had finally found the remote control as he joined us, leaning against the sofa, eyes switching between myself and all the empty space next to Mingi, âWonât you sit with me?â
âIâm going to sit with you.â Mingiâs deep voice was strong and determined as he grabbed Yunhoâs arm, basically yanking him down next to himself. Yunho went stiff as his eyes widened, sending me SOS signals with his eyes, but I just chuckled and turned my back to him, knowing that Iâd never hear the end of it. Wooyoungâs jaw hung open as he gave his friend a rather nasty glare, subtly shaking his head no at Mingi, the two communicating with their gazes. I snatched the remote control from Yunho and finally turned on the TV, wanting to get on with this movie watching already. If I heard Yunho gasp and looked back to see Mingi squeezed uncomfortably tightly against his side, eyes boring into the side of my best friendâs head, I bit back the laugh that threatened to bubble up and instead kicked Wooyoungâs leg to annoy him.
The movie took nearly three hours and by the time we have watched it everyone was sleepy, and so, the movie night was cut short as the time was nearing 2am. Yunho was drunk, not to the point that he wouldnât be able to take care of himself, but heâs had brighter times. I proposed to him to sleep over tonight, but he insisted on going home as he apparently had to be somewhere early in the morning tomorrow. I just shrugged and then offered to walk him home, having sobered up enough, but he insisted he was a big guy and that he could take care of himself. And as if Mingi had been planning for this moment, he swept in and said that heâd make sure Yunho got home safely and that he'd text Wooyoung to let me know my best friend was safe and sound in his little apartment. I didnât know how to proceed next, knowing that Yunho felt uncomfortable around Mingi, but when I opened my mouth to interject, Yunho threw a heated look Mingiâs way and scoffed, clumsily tying his shoelaces as he accepted Mingiâs offer, yanking the blonde man out of our dorm by the collar of his leather jacket. Wooyoung just blinked and then gave me a lasting look, sighing deeply as he muttered something under his breath which sounded a lot like Yunho had no idea what he had just done. Suddenly feeling a little bit skeptical, I could only hope Yunho was wrong about this whole serial killer fiasco.
âMingiâs a good guy, right?â I had asked as I followed Wooyoung into the kitchen, my phone still connected to the speaker as music was quietly playing in the background.
âWhy, do you fear for your beloved Yunhoâs life?â Wooyoungâs voice was coated in amusement, but there was something darker in its undertone, almost morbid like fascination. I was taken aback and hesitated for a second in the doorway.
âHeâs my best friend, somebody I love. Of course I fear for his life, should I call the copsââ
âDonât be dramatic,â Wooyoungâs eyes were crinkled as he turned his head, the first time heâs ever looked amused by something I have said, âMingi wonât do to him anything your friend doesnât want. I know you noticed him acting weird, but thatâs just what alcohol does to Mingi.â
I felt myself relax a little upon hearing Wooyoungâs words, and I grinned as I waltzed inside the kitchen, pulling myself up to sit on the counter by the sink, âI knew it, I told Yunho he was just overreacting, but he never really believes me.â
Wooyoung paused for a second and then turned on the faucet, taking the sponge to pour dishwasher on it, âMaybe youâd live longer if you had listened to himâŚâ
My eyebrows furrowed as I handed Wooyoung the first dirty bowl, âWhat do you mean?â
He chuckled as he washed the bowl and I crossed my legs, narrowing my eyes at him. He didnât seem drunk despite having drunk twice the alcohol I have, but then again, I didnât know much about him. He was quite the mysterious person and kept everyone at arms-length. However, I did notice he was touchier than usual, kissing Mingiâs cheeks rather often while we were playing board games, especially if Mingi nailed something.
âYouâre naĂŻve,â Wooyoung answered as he looked at me, taking the other used bowl I handed him, âand too trusting of others, my love. People will take advantage of you.â
âNobodyâs taken advantage of me before.â I huffed and watched as Wooyoung washed the rest of the dishes, a smirk on his lips as he kept glancing at me, âAnd just because of what I seem to be like to you and to other people doesnât mean Iâm dumb, or that I donât notice things.â
Wooyoung smirked as he grabbed onto the edge of the sink, leaning closer to me as his eyes seemed a lot darker than they usually were, âReally now? Do you just play dumb then, for the fun of it?â
âNot for the fun of it,â I averted my eyes as Wooyoung bit his bottom lip, his eyes raking over my body as I cleared my throat, suddenly feeling a little flustered under his watchful gaze, âit just happens, itâs what my personality is likeâand I know you donât like me.â
âIâve never said I donât like you.â Wooyoung tsked, leaning closer as he continued to wash a pan, âIâm just not too fond of obnoxious personas.â
I scoffed and grinned at him fakely, making him smirk for the nth time tonight as he turned his head and looked down at the pan he was washing. I didnât say anything to him as I continued looking at him, wondering whether the lights were playing a trick on my eyes, or whether the black ink really seemed to swirl under his skin. A bit too curious and with the last remnants of the alcohol in my system pushing me to do as I wished, I tentatively reached out and gently traced the abstract tattoos on his left arm. Wooyoung froze, eyebrows furrowing as he whipped his head around, his serene demeanor back to its unimpressed and glaring one. His muscles tensed the longer my fingers touched his soft, but unnaturally hot, flesh and he suddenly turned the water off with his other hand, all the dishes washed. I snapped out of it and gulped nervously as I looked away, turning away from Wooyoung. I could feel his eyes on me as he walked towards the table and grabbed a towel to dry his hands in, lips slowly morphing into another attractive smirk.
âYou know,â He started, voice low and almost sultry, âhumans usually cherish their lives and have a deep rotted fear of losing it.â
I hummed and picked at the cuticle of my thumb, seeing him approach the counter from my peripheral vision.
âIâve never quite met someone like you,â He paused and chuckled, and I saw him grab something from my peripheral as I had drawn blood from ripping the cuticle up, âa little stupid and ditzy, yet loving life so intensely.â
I gulped and finally looked up, eyes falling on Wooyoungâs right hand as it was slowly inching towards his abandoned butcher knife. I felt a lump raise into my throat as I looked back in his eyes, the same feeling that I have felt in the darkroom returning. I felt like his prey once again, defenseless and unable to run or hide if he were to do something unacceptable to me. His dark eyes seemed like endless pits of darkness, boring into mine as its whites seemed to glow brighter. I gulped again, hoping for the lump to disappear, but instead, something deep coiled in my stomach as his thin fingers wrapped around the handle of the butcher knife, his plush lips pulling into a sly smirk. He looked amused; his sun-kissed skin almost glowing as if he was feeding off of something. His upper teeth got caught in the silver piercing in his bottom lip, and I found myself wondering again what he tasted liked. I cleared my throat and licked my lips, our gazes connecting as Wooyoung raised one eyebrow, looking like he knew something I didnât. My heart had picked up its rhythm, beating quickly, almost in anticipation as he dragged his hand against the counter, the sound of the knife getting dragged across the counter making me wince.
âYou should have left when you still couldââ I didnât think for another second, pushing the alarming bells to the back of my mind as I jumped off the counter, marching up to him. Wooyoung seemed taken aback by my confident stance, and as his eyebrows furrowed, whatever he was about to say swallowed down, the littlest remnants of alcohol in my bloodstream fueled my curiosity strong enough to make me grab onto his cheeks and yank our lips together. Wooyoung yelped, the sound getting lost in the back of his throat as my eyebrows furrowed, his face just as hot as his arm was. But I was curiousâand sort of needy from all that alcoholâand so I didnât pull back, no, I pressed my lips harder against his, his silver lip ring cutting into my own lips. I ignored the tiny voice in the back of my head telling me to run, to get as far away as possible from this peculiar man. Suddenly, I felt his left hand grab my wrist harshly. My heart was hammering against my chest, making my temples sweat as Wooyoungâs body heat was too warm, and at last, I decided to pull away. Now at least I knew what his plush lips felt like, soft and a little wet, the lip ring prominent and cold against the flushed skin.
My grip loosened around his cheeks and I had started pulling back when suddenly something loudly crashed against the tile floors, and both of Wooyoungâs hands had me pulling back in by the cheeks as his calloused hands harshly cradled against my cheek. My eyebrows shot up, but I fluttered my eyes closed again and instead pressed our bodies together, fingers tangling into his loose t-shirt at his sides. Wooyoungâs perfume was still as overbearing as always, and it made me feel lightheaded as he suddenly parted his lips, sucking my lower lip between his teeth to clamp down onto it harshly. I hissed and tangled one hand into his long black hair, slightly yanking on the strands to get him to release my bottom lip. Wooyoung chuckled deep in the back of his throat and finally released my lip, pulling back. My eyes opened as I threw him a glare, and from being this close to him, I could finally see his eyes were black and the whites of them were actually glowing. Before I could allow my brain to really react to that discovery, I pressed my lips back against Wooyoungâs, walking him backwards as our lips slotted against each other perfectly. Our pace wasnât slow and sweet nor patient, it was rather rushed and sloppy as Wooyoung kept trying to bite onto my lower lip, his teeth feeling sharper than anyoneâs before; he couldâve drawn blood if he wanted to.
He gasped when he collided against the table and I smirked as I pushed him against it, throwing my left arm around his shoulders as I played with his hair with my right hand, Wooyoungâs legs parting as he leaned against the table comfortably. To tease him as I figured heâd hate it, I pulled back just enough to lick at his lips, prompting him to tsk and open up his lips enough for me to slip my tongue past them and into his open and inviting mouth. Wooyoung moaned in an instant, fingers of his left hand digging into my lower back, my t-shirt having ridden up, his nails burning my skin as they dug into it, and I felt my legs go a little weak as he eagerly sucked on my tongue, more moans leaving the back of his throat. I didnât think heâd be very vocal, and suddenly I felt heated all over as he pulled me even more into himself, to the point it was almost painful, his right hand holding onto my neck firmly, fingers curling around my skin.
I let him lick into my mouth, explore it to his liking as my left hand travelled down his shoulder to his pecks, squeezing and fondling his nipple through the t-shirt, making Wooyoung groan as he suddenly whirled us around, placing me up on the table. I gasped and found myself pushed down against the table by the hand Wooyoung had around my throat, his eyes glazed over as I struggled to catch my breath, Wooyoungâs chest was rising and falling rapidly as well. His lips looked swollen and I bit my bottom lip as Wooyoung ever so slowly leaned down. His fingers tightened around my neck and made my stomach coil as he suddenly leaned down, lips brushing against the exposed skin of my lower stomach due to my tank top having ridden up again.
The breath stuttered in my throat as he pressed his lips firmly against my skin, his piercing feeling cold against my flushed skin, and I grabbed his wrist with one hand as he teasingly sunk his teeth into the skin of my stomach, making me grunt as I looked down. But he was already looking up with a smirk on his lips, chin brushing against my exposed skin. I gulped, my grip tightening against his wrist as he held eye contact while slowly kissing his way up, making the hairs on my arms stand up. I trapped him in between my legs as I raised my thighs and wrapped my legs around his hips, pulling him closer in as he lit my skin on fire with his kisses, making it harder to breathe as he squeezed my neck just a little bit more, making me gulp almost nervously.
Wooyoungâs lips were finally hovering over mine and our breaths fanned each otherâs faces as we stared down each other, probably wondering where this was going. I tangled my fingers of my free hand in his hair again and brought his head closer down so that I could gently take his lip ring between my teeth, making Wooyoungâs eyes widen as he whined quite loudly. I didnât expect him to curse nor to slam his lips right onto mine next, let alone feel his bulge as he rutted against my thigh, making me moan as I was slowly starting to crave some friction. Wooyoung seemed too far gone to care about the quality of the kiss as his lips moved messily against mine, biting at my lips and sucking on my tongue as he rolled his hips against mine more frequently, driving me closer to wanting more. And I didnât dwell much on the feeling, I grabbed the hand he had rested next to my head and gently guided it down my body, letting it rest where I needed him most. Wooyoung moaned loudly as he pulled back, cupping my clothed core and applying the slightest pressure, making me sigh loudly as I bared my neck more for him to do whatever he wanted with it.
And thenâas quickly as everything happened, it all stopped. Wooyoungâs body almost flew off mine, eyes wide and expression conveying complete shock as he stared down at me sprawled out on the table and I stopped breathing for a second as I stared up at him. Yeah, I guess we shouldnât have done that, perhaps my curiosity led me a bit too far. But I couldnât deny it anymore, Wooyoung was attractive. He wiped his mouth with the back of his palm and I chuckled as I sat up, running my fingers through my hair.
âThisââ
âIâm going to sleep.â I cut him off as I announced with a chuckle, hoping off the table, watching Wooyoungâs eyebrows furrow in confusion, Thanks for the kiss, handsome.â
âWhat the fuck,â Wooyoung muttered and he turned after me as I walked past him, âyou know how to make-out?â
I snorted as I paused in the doorway, giving him a sneaky look, âIâm not that naĂŻve anymore, am I?â
âGoodnight.â Wooyoungâs voice had turned cold, unimpressed once again. I chuckled as suddenly Wooyoungâs expression turned nonchalant again, and I shook my head as I was off to sleep off the alcohol and pray that I wouldnât be hungover in the morning.
And as expected, the alcohol I have drank last night came back full force in the morning, to bite me in the ass. The bile in my throat that threatened to send me running to the bathroom refused to go away, and feeling like a complete zombie, I had no choice but to get out of bed and brew some coffee for myself. It was the only thing that could help this awful hungover, and I stood stared blindly at the counter as I listened to the shitty coffee machine make noises it wasnât supposed to make. Wooyoung didnât like coffee, so it was mostly me who used it, and because I didnât have enough money, I couldnât buy a better machine. This one would do for two more months, until I was finished with this university yearânot that I was too happy of moving back home for the summer break, but it had to be done as I didnât have a job yet and couldnât stay in the city. Yunho would probably let me move in with him, but I didnât want to bother him as long as I didnât have a job. I sighed as my phone on the table dinged once, then twice, then thrice, and I dragged myself to it very lazily and painfilled. Yunhoâs contact name stared back at me as I curiously tapped onto his message, wondering if he was feeling any better than I was.
My fake boyfie<3: Y/N. IâŚmight have fucked up Can I come over?
My eyebrows raised as I walked back to the coffee machine to turn it off, desperate to feel the first drop of caffeine on my tongue.
Me: Iâm on the brink of death and I also have to study Did something bad happen? Canât you tell me through text? My fake boyfie<3: I donât want to type this down, but it can wait Donât mind that your best friend is on the brink of death too, for other reasons than youâŚ
I scoffed and took a sip of my coffee, the plainness of it harsh, but very much so welcomed right now.
Me: Stop being dramatic and tell me instead. My fake boyfie<3: Are you free tomorrow for brunch? Me: Sure am, see you at our usual spot? My fake boyfie<3: YesâŚunless I get abducted by a fucking demon Y/N. Me: Lol, okay Not you being paranoid again Ttyl
The loud footsteps coming to a stop in the doorway made me look up from my phone, and I smiled upon seeing Wooyoungâs dishevelled form. Someone had a good nightâs sleep, apparently, and seemed rather fine despite the many drinks heâs had, interesting.
âMorning.â I smiled at Wooyoung as I leaned against the counter behind me, taking a sip of my coffee. His eyes narrowed as he walked inside the kitchen, never leaving me as he was headed towards the fridge. I snorted and watched as he grabbed the cartoon of milk greedily, then let the fridge door slam shut.
âShouldnât you be hungover?â He asked, eyes narrowing as I downed the remaining bitter coffee in one go.
âI am, but canât let that stop me.â I shrugged, and walked to the sink to wash my cup.
âItâs a full moon tonight, are you going anywhere out?â Wooyoungâs voice sounded suspiciously nice and forced, and I threw him a quick quizzical glance before turning the faucet off.
âNo, I have to study for our exam on Monday.â I sighed and wiped my hands down on my pyjama pants.
âGood.â My eyebrows furrowed as Wooyoung smirked, turning his back to me as he muttered something under his breath. Knowing that I couldnât waste any more time on useless things, I walked back to my room to study some last-minute things I have missed out on previously. Wooyoung and his quirkiness could wait for another day to be deciphered.
Studying with a hangover was the worst possible idea Iâve ever had, but since I have procrastinated terribly, I had no choice but to power through the suffering like a champ, and save the whining for another day. By 10pm I felt completely brainless and tired out of my mindâquite literallyâand so, I have decided it was time to call it a day. I have studied as much as possible, and now I felt positive about passing this classâunless the teacher has something secretly against me, unlike with Wooyoung, with whom he isnât so secretive about the fact that he canât stand my dormmate. With a rumbling stomach and body begging for a long and refreshing shower, I pulled my hair into a bun with the short strands falling out annoyingly so, and changed into some fresh pajamas so that I wouldnât have to carry it with me to the bathroom. I stepped into my flip flops and shut the lights off, throwing my door open.
The first thing I noticed was the salt weirdly scattered in a perfect line right underneath my doorway. That wasnât there in the morning, and I have never seen Wooyoung place it there before, so I made sure not to smudge it as I stepped over itâfor some weird reason waiting for something to happen. But nothing did, and so, with a shrug, I closed the door behind me and looked around the dark living room. Smog seemed to lightly coat the air, and I scrunched my nose up at the overbearing scent of something strongârather earthy and weed-like smellingâmaking me wonder what Wooyoung was up to.
I knew his room was off limits, but I also knew he was home. And the smog seemed to come from underneath his door. The whole dorm seemed to hum lowly, hushed voices traveling through Wooyoungâs closed door, and I bit my bottom lip, wondering whether I should approach him or not. But Iâve never been inside his room before and I was curiousâI have always beenâand almost as if I couldnât control myself, I found my feet carrying me towards it. The hushed voices turned into low whispers the closer I got, and I found them changing in pitch as I gulped nervously, raising my hand to knock on his door. Despite the weird drive to barge inside, I felt myself hesitate for a secondâand then I was knocking on his door, not waiting for an answer as I pulled it open and stepped inside. However, the sight I was presented with wasnât something usual, nor one I had expected to see.
Wooyoungâs room was coated in pitch darkness, except for the black candles that were placed in a circle and lit up, barely illuminating the weird sign that was painted on the floorboard with black ink. Salt was drawn in a circle around the candles and the drawing, and the room reeked of that earthy and weed-like smell I have felt earlier, making me cough. Wooyoung was sat on his knees inside the circle, in the middle of it, three different ancient looking books opened up, one of them sizzling slightly. He wore a sleeveless tank top once again and grey sweatpants, the black ink underneath his skin darker than before as it swirled around, curling around his arms in weird patterns. The floorboard outside of the salt and candle circle was covered in different runesâI could only assume thatâs what they wereâand as Wooyoungâs gaze met mine, I was taken aback by his completely black eyes. The whites of them were completely gone, and they instead looked like endless pits of blackness, keeping me rooted to my spot as my eyes widened. When he grinned widely, his teeth were sharper and much whiter than usually, and the image sent my heart into a frenzy.
âWell, well, well,â Wooyoung chuckled, sitting back on his ankles, âexactly who I needed, thank you for making this easier for me.â
I gulped, feeling unsure and really confused, âUh, whatâs this?â
âI suppose since youâre about to die, I can tell youâŚâ Wooyoung chuckled as his fingers touched the yellow paper of the book he had right in front of himself, âItâs a death ritual, my love, more exactly a sacrificial one.â
âOh,â I whispered, feeling the hairs on my arms stand up, âthatâsâI thought satanism is illegal?!â
Wooyoung threw his head back and laughed darkly, making a shiver run down my spine, âSatanism is beyond me, my love, I am what satanist love to blindly and dumbly worship.â
I gulped, eyebrows furrowing as I tried to think whatever that could mean as Wooyoungâs eyes fell back on my figure, narrowing as he leered at me, âSo youâre likeâŚa cult leader then?â
Wooyoungâs expression fell for a second, jaw clenching as there was a snort coming from somewhere I couldnât see. My eyebrows furrowed as I surveyed the room, but the darkness was too permeating for me to see anything beyond it. The candlelight cast eerie shadows over Wooyoungâs face as he grabbed something that lay next to his left handâhis favourite butcher knife. I gulped and considered leaving the room for a second, but I felt rooted to my spot, like something was keeping me there.
âYouâre so dumb, itâs tiring at this point.â Wooyoung hissed and I chuckled, scratching the back of my head in embarrassment, âBut I also must be grateful to your naivety, or else you wouldnât still be here.â
âI pretty much donât want to be here anymore, but I find it hard to leave when something invisible is clutching at my ankles.â I grinned widely at Wooyoung, feeling a little panic rising up in my veins as he chuckled, slowly standing up. Why did he look taller than before? That wasnât a good sign, was it?! I chewed on my bottom lip, tensely watching out for his next move. That butcher knife clutched tightly in his right hand didnât seem so inoffensive anymore.
âAre you terrified now that your useless little cross canât do anything to protect you from me?â My eyebrows raised in surprise as I looked down, patting the golden cross that sat underneath my hoodie. I never thought Wooyoung noticed my necklace, I always wore it underneath my clothes as I wasnât a very religious person. I only wore it because my mother thought it would protect me from demonic and evil entities and energies. Donât know about that anymoreâŚWooyoung looks pretty demonic to me right now.
âIâm more confused than terrified, to be honest, Wooyoung.â I chuckled and shrugged at the same time, ignoring the cold sweat my body broke out in all of a sudden. My heart was still pounding fast in my chest, but I ignored it.
âI canât be bothered anymore with you; you are so irritating.â Wooyoung groaned as he twirled the knife in his hands, âI am going to stab you, and you wonât scream. And before blood loss can kill you, Iâm going to carve your heart out.â
Well, shit. That didnât sound too pleasant, nor like a fun time. I gulped, my mouth having gone dry, and I plastered on my friendliest and most innocent smile, hoping that it would somehow change Wooyoungâs mind and make him like me in just a few seconds. Perhaps heâd choose someone else for his sacrifice then, âOkay, butâŚmay I know why you chose me for this complicated and totally cool sacrifice of yours?â
Wooyoung froze for a second, looking puzzled as deep giggles came from somewhere in the darkness again, making me look around confused. Was there actually someone else in the room with us?
For a second, the look Wooyoung gave me screamed that I was completely mad, and then he pinched his nose and heaved out a long sigh, âI need someone pure and innocent for this ritual to work. You see, Iâm a demon but Iâm not exactly very powerful, nor everlasting, just yet and the heart and blood of a virgin will help me rise in the ranks.â
Oh, âWooyoung, uhm, this is a little bit awkward, but, uh, what Iâm getting from what you just said is that you assume Iâm a virgin?â
Wooyoung smirked as he stepped over his ancient looking books, âExactly. Youâre perfect for me, my love, I have to thank youââ
âActually, you donât.â I cut him off with a chuckle, pushing my hair behind my ears as I felt my cheeks flush, âIâm not a virgin.â
Wooyoung froze, eyebrows furrowing in confusion. There was another loud snort in the room, and my eyes narrowed as I tried to see past the darkness to notice an even darker form, but I wasnât successful, âYou canât lie to me, thereâs nothing youâll say that will save you nowââ
âIâm not lying, though.â I shrugged, clasping my hands together behind my back, âI really am not a virgin.â
âWhat?â Wooyoung scoffed, eyebrows furrowing as he took me in, his dark eyes raking over my body slowly, âHow is that possible?!â
âWait,â I deadpanned, mouth falling open in hurt, âare you saying all this time you assumed I was a virgin and kept trying to kill me?! I canât believe Yunho was rightââ
âYunho knows?!â It was Wooyoungâs turn to look shocked, eyes darting around the room as they stopped on something further inside his room, near his bed. I looked towards it and narrowed my eyes, trying really hard to see whether there was someone there or not. And then, almost as if a mist lifted off that side of the room, I was able to make out platinum blonde hair.
âHe doesnât know weâre demons,â Suddenly a deep voice spoke up, sounding beyond amused, it was Mingi, âI mean, he doesnât know you are a demon.â
âThen howââ Wooyoungâs head whipped back in my direction, his eyes narrowing again, âyou told him everything?!â
âObviously!â I exclaimed with a scoff, crossing my arms in front of my chest. I noticed my heart wasnât beating that fast anymore, even my muscles seemed more relaxed, âHeâs my best friend, of course I tell him everything!â
âBut thenââ Wooyoung paused, pointing his knife at me, âYou really arenât a virgin then?!â
âNo, Iâm not!â I exclaimed exasperated, rolling my eyes as I saw movement in my peripheral vision, âI literally lost my virginity when I was seventeen, Wooyoung. And I mean, I know you still might not believe me, but thereâs someone who can prove itâoh, hi, Mingiâif we were to hit up Yunho right now, he could totally prove that Iâm not a virginâwait! I donât mean that Yunho and I slept together, because heâs not exactly the straightest person I knowââ
âYeah, I know.â Mingiâs plump lips were pulled into the widest smirk, his eyes glinting with mischief as he finally made himself visible, walking towards us with his arms crossed in front of his chest. My eyebrows furrowed and I took a deep breath to fill my lungs with air, watching Mingi with confusion.
âWhat do you mean âyou knowâ?â Mingi remained silent as he nonchalantly leaned against Wooyoungâs dresser, raising an eyebrow smugly. Oh. Oh. My jaw fell open as my eyes raked over Mingi, something in my stomach coiling as realization dawned upon me. No. Fucking. Way. Thereâs no way Yunho and MingiâŚis that why Yunho was so desperate to speak to me today? Oh, my God, âYou slept with Yunho?!â
Mingi chuckled as he looked down at his hands, checking his black painted nails with much interest, âItâs more like he slept with me, but yes, and it was pretty fucking amazingââ
âCan we focus?!â Wooyoung exclaimed, throwing Mingi a heated glare before he turned back to face me, looking rather pissed off.
âRight, right.â I huffed, throwing Mingi a small glare before I looked back at Wooyoung, âYou said Mingi was a good guyâŚâ
âI also mentioned he wouldnât do anything to your friend as long as he didnât want itââ
âOh, he rather desperately wanted itââ
âEnough!â I exclaimed, thankful for the invisible force keeping me rooted or else Iâd be at Mingiâs throat, beating him up for taking advantage of Yunho when he was drunk, âFuck, okay, so Yunho was in the next room when I slept with my boyfriend for the first timeâand many other times to be fair, poor Yuyu suffered enough because we were often hornyâyou can literally ask him. Iâm not a virgin, Wooyoung, so unless your sacrifice would still work, can you release me?!â
Wooyoung tsked, tapping the knife against his head rather carelessly, âThis is badâŚI canât believe I wasted six months on finding ways to kill you, and you arenât even a virgin. I have to wait another year until I can perform this ritual again, Y/N.â
I scoffed and glared at my dormmate, âIs it my fault you dumbly assumed I was oneâwhy did you even think that?!â
âWell, first of all, youâre super lame.â Wooyoung gave me a once over, pursing his lips as he placed one hand on his hip, âYouâve got no game and you never brought any guys over. I didnât even see you interact with one, besides Yunho, and he doesnât count. Secondly, youâre too loud, nosy, and annoyingâno guy likes that, my love. Thirdly, I donât like you, getting rid of you wouldâve been perfect, but now Iâll have to continue being dormmates with you for another two yearsâstraight up horror.â
Well, that wasnât too nice, and it did certainly hurt a little bit, âYou know what, fuck you, Wooyoung. Youâre not the nicest personââ
âIâm literally a demon, but whateverââ
âShut up, idiot, Iâm talking now.â I snapped, glaring at Wooyoung as I was able to move again, and I stepped closer to his stupid circle, making his eyebrows shoot up, âDespite our differences, I remained nice to you, and here you were, planning my death all this time. You know what? It serves you right that your stupid little ritual failed and you deserve to wait another year until you can try again. And by the way, itâs on you for not realizing sooner, considering what happened last nightââ
âOh, what happened last night?â Mingi grinned like a little child, wriggling his eyebrows at us.
âShut up, Iâm mad at you.â I snapped, directing my glare onto him now, âYou shouldnât have slept with a drunken Yunho, Iâm going to beat you up real bad for it, you just wait. And Wooyoung and I made-outâquite heavily at thatâwho knew Wooyoung is just a whiney idiotââ
âOkay, youâre mad, but you donât have to call me an idiot in each sentence you sayââ
âYeah, I have to, idiotââ
âOkay, for the recordââ Mingiâs hands were raised in the air, eyes big as he looked comically innocent, âYunho wasnât drunk by the time we got to the fun part, Y/N. I might be a demon, but I like my partners sober and rather conscious when we get down to businessââ
âJust say sex like any normal person, you dumb fuck.â Wooyoung groaned, throwing his butcher knife onto the floor as he sighed, looking at the mess he had created, as if it wasnât his fault that he couldnât go through with his ritual.
âBut Iâm not a normal person.â Mingi teased, sticking his tongue out as Wooyoung sighed, running his hands through his hair multiple times. I sighed and turned to leave the room, but Wooyoung yelped, making me stop and turn back.
âWhere are you going?!â He sounded rather panicked, eyes wide as I rolled my eyes, âWhat are you going to do now?â
âI am going to take a fucking bath and if you come inside, I swear to God, Wooyoung, I will cut your balls off in your sleepâdemon or not.â I narrowed my eyes at him, âUnlike somebody, I was busy studying my ass off today, and now I have a headache thanks to your awful incenseâopen the windows for me, please.â
âSo, youâwonât call a priest for an exorcism or the Catholic church and the Pope on me?â Wooyoungâs voice sounded small, lower lip jutting out as I looked at him confused, wondering if I had started hallucinating now. Was this Wooyoungâs real personality? Gosh, I desperately needed that bath and sleep.
âDo you still plan on killing me?â I raised my eyebrows as Mingiâs phone buzzed. He smirked as he unlocked it, and I didnât miss the quick glance he took at me. That fucker, he must be texting with Yunho now.
âNot really.â Wooyoung muttered, sounding rather disappointed. I scoffed and stepped over the threshold, grabbing the handle of his door.
âGreat, good to know.â I muttered and plastered on a fake wide smile, âThen, my dear dormmate, can you put out your candles before they fucking burn down our whole dorm? Last time I checked, carpets arenât fireproof. What sort of idiot sets candles alight near a very flammable thing? And let me not even get started on the wooden floorboardsââ
âDonât worry, it isnât his first time doing this.â Mingi chuckled, and then extended his leg, putting out a candle with the sole of his shoe. Which, shouldnât have been on his feet, but I had a feeling he hasnât come through the front door like a normal person wouldâve.
âOh, shit.â Wooyoung muttered and then quickly got on all fours, blowing out the candles one by one. I shook my head and went to leave, but paused and looked at Wooyoung with a shit eating grin.
âWooyoung?â He hummed and cast a fleeting glance my way, too busy with making sure no candle would burn his carpet to ashes, âYouâve got one day to study for our exam, you know that, right? And with how much Mr. Kim dislikes youâŚI wonder if youâve got some ritual to help you pass your grades tooâŚâ
Mingi giggled and then crouched down next to Wooyoung, murmuring something under his breath that I didnât understand before he broke the salt circle, and stepped inside of it to help his friend clean up faster.
âCanât you just help me out with your notes?!â Wooyoung snapped, throwing a heated glare my way. I chuckled and leaned against the door, smiling sweetly at him.
âWerenât you just about to sacrifice me for an everlasting life and more power?â I singsonged, âYouâll have to make it up to me generously before I help you out, handsome.â
âSo, likeâŚâ Mingi looked up, eyes twinkling with mischief, âwith sex?â
âMingi! Shut up!â Wooyoung and I exclaimed at the same time, making Mingi pout with a hiss as he knocked over two of Wooyoungâs black candles. He grumbled something under his breath again, and then with a loud crack, he was gone. I blinked once, twice, and then sighed, feeling my mild headache turn into a full-on painful pounding. God, if I sleep for a whole week, will this madness stop?!
âI can make you all sorts of potions,â Wooyoung spoke up after the stretched silence, smiling tentatively, âto help you relax while you bathe, or when itâs storming outside to help you fall asleep. If you catch a cold, I can brew you something thatâll instantly heal you or whatever you want, to be honest. Iâm quite good at brewing stuff.â
âI thought you were a demon.â I hummed, leaning my head against the door as Wooyoung shrugged.
âThereâs many types of demons, my love.â Wooyoung said, the whites of his eyes finally returning as he chuckled, âYouâre lucky Iâm the nicer kind.â
âNicer, my ass.â I huffed and closed my eyes for a second as the headache made me feel nauseous.
âIâll make you something for your headache, Y/N.â Wooyoungâs smile was soft as he stood again, gathering the thick books in his arms, âYou go ahead and take a bath.â
âOkay, fine, but if I get sicker, Iâm reporting you to the Pope.â Wooyoung froze for a second, and then his head fell back and he started laughing loudly, making me giggle quietly as I watched him place the books on his desk. He turned around and grinned widely as he leaned against his desk.
âSo, a soothing potion, andââ His eyes narrowed for a second, and I wondered whether it was a trick of the light making them looked suddenly hazed over with desire, âSex does fix quite a few issues, you know.â
I chuckled, my eyes narrowing challengingly at Wooyoung as I pushed off the door, undoing my bun, âReally? See you in ten minutes, then.â
I winked and then pulled my hoodie over my head, wearing nothing underneath it. Wooyoungâs eyes widened as they fell onto my breasts and I chuckled, threw my hoodie at him, and then turned around and took off towards the bathroom, skin on fire as I felt Wooyoungâs lustful gaze burn my body apart as I pushed the sweats off too before I stepped inside the bathroom, leaving the door slightly ajar.
âFuck.â I heard him curse loudly before I turned on the water, letting the bath fill as I smirked to myself upon hearing Wooyoung drop something and curse again, run from his room to the kitchen, then back to his room.
Well, guess Yunho wonât be the only one getting that magick demon dick anymore. Another thing to bond over as besties, yay. At least heâs not getting boned by my ex, again.
