'Do you think there's such a thing as a criminal mind?' Carrot almost audibly tried to work this out. 'What . . . you mean like . . . Mr. Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler, sir?' 'He's not a criminal.' 'You have eaten one of his pies, sir?' 'I mean . . . yes . . . but . . . he's just geographically divergent in the financial hemisphere.' 'Sir?' 'I mean he just disagrees with other people about the position of things. Like money. He thinks it should all be in his pocket.'

She smiled at him.
And then it arose and struck Vimes that, in her own special category, she was quite beautiful; this was the category of all the women, in his entire life, who has ever thought he was worth smiling at. She couldn't do worse, but then, he couldn't do better. So maybe it balanced out. She wasn't getting any younger but then, who was? And she had style and money and common-sense and self-assurance and all the things that he didn't, and she had opened her heart, and if you let her she could engulf you; the woman was a city.
And eventually, under siege, you did what Ankh-Morpork had always done - unbar the gates, let the conquerors in, and make them your own.

Sometimes I feel good and then I remember that then it arose and struck Vimes that, in her own special category, she was quite beautiful; this was the category of all the women, in his entire life, who had ever thought he was worth smiling at. In the night’s damp cloak assassins assassinated, thieves thieved, hussies hustled and so on. And drunken Captain Vimes of the Night Watch staggered slowly down the street, folded gently into the gutter outside the Watch House and lay there while above him strange letters made out of light sizzled in the damp and changed colour.
“The city was a... was a... was a... wossname... thing. Woman. That's what it was. Woman. Roaring, ancient, centuries-old. Strung you along… let you fall in uh… thingy… love with her. Then kicked you in ya thingy… in ya mouth… tongue… tonsils… teeth! That’s what it… she… did. She was ah… thing… you know… lady… dog… puppy… hen… bitch. And then you hated her and just when you thought you’d got her…. it… out of your… yeah… whatever… then she’d open her great booming rotten heart to you… caught you off bal- bal- bal…ah… thing… -ance… that’s it… yeah. Never knew where you stood… lay. Only thing you were sure of… you couldn’t let her go… because… because… she was yours… all you had… even in her gutters.”
-Samuel Vimes's entrance scene in Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards!
.....
IT'S SO GOOD. Vimes being heartbroken and maudlin over his beloved city.

A lilac to Vimes for surviving the horrors
A lilac to Nobby for surviving the horrors.
A lilac to Colon for surviving the horrors.
A lilac to Vetinari for surviving the horrors
And a lilac to Red Shoe for surviving the horrors

"What you’ve got to ask yourself is: Am I feeling lucky?"
This image Captain Vimes was so memorable that I had to draw it.

Sam Vimes is Disco-coded.
I’ve been re-reading “guards! Guards! and I have thoughts.
Serial alcoholic
Prone to forgetting important things
Regularly puts his foot in his mouth
Elicits a strange mixture of pity and respect from his peers
Is fully aware most of this is self inflicted
Somehow still an incredibly competent officer when the chips are down.
This man is one divorce away from crashing his car into the river.

My father has informed me that he imagines Vimes as looking exactly like Columbo. Unbelievable based.

My theatre group is putting on a production of Guards! Guards! in February in Sheffield, UK. It would be wonderful to meet the wider Discworld community that is hiding in the crevices

Basing on an enormous feedback of likes and reblogs that I am gathering at this post I decided to try drawing another version of Vimes among dragons. Once again I am forced to apologise for my colouring

Even shorn of her layers of protective clothing, Lady Sybil Ramkin was still toweringly big. When she spoke, every word was like a hearty slap on the back and clanged with the aristocratic self-assurance of the totally well-bred. The vowel sounds alone would have cut teak. She had a mass of chestnut hair; a wig Vimes learned later. No-one who had much to do with dragons kept their own hair for long.
