Royalty AU: Heartslabyul, Savanaclaw, and Octavinelle
This is going to provide a bit more lore for the au, as well as providing some information about what the rest of the boys are doing in this world!
Start Here
Your Kingdom:
-Your kingdom is known as the Kingdom of Sages, and its capital is the city of Ramshackle. As the heir to the throne, you reside in Night Raven Castle, along with your staff. You have Crowley, your tutor and advisor. Master Crewel is your personal healer. Trein is the steward of the castle. Sam is the castle's quartermaster, and Captain Vargas is the leader of your Royal Guard. There are also more maids, butlers, and cooks than you can count. Your parents also reside within the castle, but you don't often see them, due to their royal duties.
Heartslabyul:
Riddle:
-The Rosehearts manage the Heartslabyul march, which is a fairly large patch of land on the borders of your kingdom. However, only Marquess Rosehearts actually lives in the march. Marchioness Rosehearts and Riddle both reside in a rather lavish estate in Ramshackle. The family's investments in medical research have made them more wealthy than most others of their class, and plenty of nobles despise them for it.
-Riddle's mother is still extremely strict with him, but her motivations are a bit different here. The marchioness is fairly power hungry, and she wants social status more than anything. Thus, she's been raising Riddle to be the most suitable candidate for your hand in marriage. If you choose him, then she'll be the mother of your king consort, and that grants her more social standing than the rest of the aristocracy. Riddle, for what it's worth, is hesitant to actually court you because of that. He's aware of what she's like, and he doesn't want to subject you to her whims.
Trey:
-He's recently taken over for the Four Leaf Bakery, which is the most popular sweet shop in Ramshackle. His mother, father, and siblings are still helping out, but his parents are trying to make sure that he knows how to run things properly before they get too old. Trey likes to think that people come to the bakery because of how good his treats taste, but honestly, people also come to see him. He's polite, hard working, and sweeter than a slice of his bakery's famous strawberry tarts. Swing by the shop, won't you? He'll make sure to whip up your favorites.
Cater:
-Cater works for the capital's best selling newspaper, the Ramshackle Gazette. He's always busy writing new articles, and interviewing people. Pretty much everyone recognizes his charming smile, and his news stories are always plastered on the front page. Secretly, he finds all the running around to be more than a little tiring, but he wouldn't trade his job for the world. You've spotted him prowling around the gates of your castle recently, hoping to snag an exclusive interview with you. After all, putting your words to paper will make him even more popular.
Ace:
-Ace works as a delivery boy, making sure people receive their packages and other sundries. He's often paired up with Deuce, who works for the same company. Ace ends up running around all over the capital, and he usually complains about having to do so. Honestly though, he's not sure what he'd rather do in life. He enjoys doing little magic shows, but being a street busker isn't a steady job, and his mother would yell at him for doing it. One day, he might figure out his life's purpose. But that day isn't today, he thinks, as yet another bundle of mail is shoved into his hands.
Deuce:
-He also works as a delivery boy, but he gets a few more benefits, since his mother is the one who runs the office. Unlike Ace, Deuce does like the job. He gets to wander all over the city, and meet interesting people. But he wants to be a knight, deep down inside. He grew up hearing stories about valiant knights protecting delicate princesses, and he's been enamored with the idea ever since. Still, his mother always says he should keep his head out of the clouds. So he'll work hard to make her happy.
Savanaclaw:
Leona:
-He's still the second prince of Sunset Savannah, and he still resents his place in life. However, Falena is doing what he can to further diminish Leona's political power by planting rumors and stirring up their citizens. Leona is intelligent, bitter, and ambitious. Three traits that make him a rival for the throne, despite the birth of Falena's son, Cheka. The best way to get rid of Leona is to marry him off to someone outside of their country, where he won't pose as much of a problem. Falena doesn't quite like the idea of Leona becoming your king consort, but it's better than letting him continue to stay. Besides, if you marry his brother, then your country will be more open to diplomacy, and trade. And that's what's driving Falena to push Leona your way.
-As for Leona himself, he's heard about your search, but he isn't all that interested in going to see you. He's not keen on the idea of actually courting you, because he's aware of what Falena is attempting to do. Besides, he doesn't want to end up playing second fiddle to a spouse that won't take his advice, or let him rule beside them. Although, he has to admit that he's a bit curious as to what you're actually like. And who knows? Play your cards right, and you might just be able to snag his full attention.
Ruggie:
-Cleaning, cooking, washing clothes, scrubbing floors, he does it all. Ruggie is a personal attendant for Leona, and that means doing whatever the prince demands of him. It's tough, and he almost never has time for a break, but it's not all bad. Normally, Leona would have a small fleet of servants, but thanks to Falena's efforts, Ruggie is pretty much his only servant. Despite that, Ruggie is proud to serve Leona. The prince pays well enough for Ruggie to feed his family, and that's what matters most. And, if Leona marries you, hopefully the man will remember who actually took care of him.
Jack:
-Jack serves as a personal guard for Leona. Admittedly, Jack isn't sure how he ended up being the one to guard the prince. Protecting the royal family is usually a task only given to the very best of the royal guards, but Jack is still a fresh faced recruit. Still, he takes his job very seriously. He's never too far from Leona, and he's constantly scanning his surroundings. Once he hears the news about your search, his mind instantly goes to his prince. He sincerely hopes that, if you marry Leona, you'll let him continue to protect the man who's earned his steadfast loyalty.
Octavinelle:
Azul:
-His mother owns what is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of the most famous restaurants in your kingdom. Even your own parents have been there, and loved every dish she presented. Azul, however, wasn't satisfied with just helping her run the family business. He set his sights higher, and managed to open his information agency with the help of the Leech family. It's worth knowing that, despite Azul's wealth and connections, his reputation isn't the best. Sure, he always delivers exactly what you asked for, but many people have figured out firsthand why you should always read the fine print.
-As for his reasons for courting you, he claims that it's all about the power he'll gain from winning your hand. And he's not exactly lying about that. But he's also a romantic, deep down. He's always wanted a fairytale romance, and he sees the opportunity to have that with you. He sighs, already dreaming about the tales people will tell about how the heir to the throne fell deeply in love with a common octopus mer. Floyd and Jade are already teasing him for how often he's practiced writing "King Consort Azul" on the margins of his papers.
Jade:
-Jade is one half of Azul's "eyes and ears." Literally. When they first started helping Azul with the Octavinelle Agency, the twins struck a deal with Azul. Now, Azul is capable of seeing and hearing the same things as them, to an extent. As for your search for a husband, he's extremely curious to see who you'll select. After all, it might be fun for him and his brother to have royal backing for their antics. Or, it might be even more amusing to watch you fall for someone else, and crush Azul's hopes and dreams.
Floyd:
-Right now, he's bouncing between eagerly listening for news on your search, and getting irritated at you because it's all anyone's talking about. Honestly, it's so much fuss! He sometimes entertains the idea of trying to woo you himself, just to see the looks on everyone's faces. But Azul's quick to remind him that meeting you is going to be a big deal, so he needs to be on his best behavior. That sounds so boring! He'd rather see how cute you'd look if he gave you a little squeeze. You won't mind, right?

24 Days of La Fayette - Day 2
After beginning with one of my favourite portraits, let us continue with one of La Fayette’s favourite portraits of himself. This one:
Tumblr media
Lafayette by Ary Scheffer, 1822-1823 via Wikipedia (12/02/2023)
It was a painted by the Dutch-French artist Ary Scheffer around 1822. The portrait was intended as a commemoration and present for La Fayette final visit to America - his Triumphant Tour in 1824/25. This was not the only work done by Scheffer for La Fayette, neither prior nor after the Tour.
The portrait accompanied him on this tour and La Fayette and Scheffer gifted it to the House of Representatives in 1824 when La Fayette was the first foreign visitor to address both the Senate and the House of Representatives in a joint meeting. To this day, it still hangs in the House Chamber (it was first displayed in the Capital Rotunda). The portrait was very well received by the people of the day. The newspapers wrote how close it resembled General La Fayette and no less than 27 state-banks featured the portrait on their currency. Many artists wanted to paint La Fayette during this momentous event but he neither had the time, nor the patience to sit for every single one of them. Instead, they copied this painting and made numerous engravings and prints. That is the reason why you see a number of copies and variations of this painting on the internet.
There is also an hilarious anecdote connected to this painting.
When Ary Scheffer was painting his portrait, someone asked the General how he was posed. He said:
“I am taking a walk - my hat and cane in my hand - like this.” “And the other hand?” “It is in my pocket, which is much better than having it in somebody else’s”
American friends of Lafayette, Gazette of the American Friends of Lafayette, No. 03, p. 3, May 1944. (12/02/2023)

Lu Town Gazetteer
Preface:
A gazetteer is the history of zodiac, geography, people, customs and events of a land. In Liang dynasty there is Yellow maps of the Western Capital, in Song dynasty there is Records of Peaceful Universe. In the Kui-Mao year of Guangxu, I went to Wei Zhuang to congrats my classmate Mr. Bai's son’s succession in the imperial examination. At that time, Zhang Taiyan and his fellows wrote rebellious poems in the newspaper, and His Majesty had the rebels arrested and jailed. I said to Mr. Bai, "Newspapers are, after all, something nasty. It' s fortunate that I wisely dismissed the idea of sending articles to newspapers at that time." Mr. Bai's son suggested that I might want to write the gazetteer for my hometown if I couldn't write articles for the newspaper, as it could be a merit. I said, "Lu Town is so small that no one has ever made a gazetteer for it before. Who would ever care about the history of such a small place?" The young man said, "Every great gazetteer is made of the history of small places, and that is ‘many hairs make a fur coat’ in ancient classics. My father used to say that although Lu Town is small, it is a place with an ancient style. People in Lu town are able to practice the ethical conduct of the sages in old time. More importantly, one doesn't need a reason to write for the place he comes from.” And that is my motivation of writing gazetteer for Lu Town.
Someone Ding
Second Year of Xuantong, Geng-Xu.
Zodiac:
Lu Town belongs to Yue, while its zodiac divides between Dou and Niu.
Geography:
Out of the northern gate of City S, sailing thirty miles down River Meishan, and this is where Lu Town is located. There will be boatmen on the river, carrying passengers into City S early every morning and returning to Lu Town before dinner. In the west of the town there is the Temple of Land God. In the east of the town there is Xianheng Tavern, which is the property of the Lu clan.
Ten miles north from Lu Town is Wei Zhuang.
Five miles further north is Zhao Zhuang. Five miles northeast of Zhao Zhuang is Pingqiao Village, out of which is the East Sea.
People:
Lu town has many well educated clans and families with a long history. They bring a tradition of loyalty and filial obedience to the whole town. The majority of surname in Lu Town is Lu. The surname Lu descended from the Duke of Zhou, who is said to have migrated to this place during the Chaos in Qin Dynasty. Ding is another major surname in Lu Town. Surname Ding in Lu Town is the descendant of Ding Xiaogong in the Eastern Han Dynasty, and migrated here during the Yongjia Migration. Both of these clans achieved success in the imperial examinations and brought glories to Lu Town.
In addition to these two, people from Lu Town would also marry with people from other villages and towns, so the town also has surnames such as Bai, Wei, Zhao, Liu, Wang, Shan, Jia and He. The He family has been practicing medicine for generations. The Jia family owns a medicinal garden, and the secret recipes for many medicines.
Natural Resources:
Lu Town is a water town, and the main crop of it are rice and wheat. People in Lu Town will use the crop to make yellow wine. In the summer, one can rent a boat and buy wine, rafting in the river cozily, just like Su Dongpo who wrote the Red Cliff Fugue. In addition to this, farmers also make a living by growing fava beans and soybeans. People would use soybeans to grind soy milk and tofu. Some farmers on the beach facing the sea in the north would grow watermelons and sell them into the fruit stores in S-town. There are often elegant Xiangfei bamboo forests in the yards where people live, echoing the morality of the ancient sages.
Customs:
The people of Lu Town are simple and they obey Confucian manners in their life. At the same time, there are Buddhist and Taoist beliefs among the people.
The township custom at the end of the year in Lu Town is the New Year Sacrifice, which starts at December 20th every year, and last until the Spring Festival. This is a ritual in accordance with the Rites of Zhou. At the New Year's Sacrifice every year, each clan and family will prepare "Three Sacrificial Offerings" for the ceremony. The "Three Sacrificial Offerings" are a simplified version of the "Five Sacrificial Offerings", and the people in Lu Town normally use pork, a whole chicken and a whole goose. Women will wash the offerings and boil them with fresh water. Men will worship the God of Luckiness to the offerings to complete the ritual. At the fifth hour people place the offerings on the altar, insert incense or chopsticks in them and light up the candles. After that, people will set off firecrackers. As the ritual is completed, the clan or the family is blessed.
Lu Town will hold many festivals entertainments over the year. During the festival, a troupe of opera singers will be specially invited to perform, and there will be a fair in the town where people from the surrounding villages or the nearby town will come to trade.
Events:
In the Wu-Wei year of Guangxu, an aged Confucian Apprentice in Lu Town lurks into the Ding family' s main house in the evening and tries to steal. When he was captured by the guards in Imperial Examination Ding’s study room, the guards found several rare books including The Book of Documents and The Spring and Autumn: Commentary of Gong-Yang annotated by Zhang Yuanbian in his wrap. The butler in the Ding family was going to take this Confucian Apprentice to the government office in the town. Some of the people surrounding them recognized this man as the thief who stole books from the He family last year and was later caught by Doctor He. The people were very spiteful to him. At this point Imperial Examination Ding came out and asked the butler and this Confucian Apprentice what was happening. After knowing the whole story, Ding sighed: “How can such a person be a noble gentleman if he does things that go against the ethical standards of Confucius and Mencius for the sake of learning it? This is what The Book of Analects means by ‘the mean man, when he is in want, gives way to unbridled license’! If you still consider yourself as a scholar, please write the confession yourself.” The aged Confucian Apprentice was ashamed and wrote a confession. The neighbors all think Ding is of noble morality.
In the Ji-Hai year of Guangxu, Zhao Qi, the proprietor of the Maoyuan Tavern in a nearby village, proclaimed in his tavern that Kang Youwei was the reincarnation of Confucius. Zhao said that Kang Youwei was born with a brass bell with a bell clipper made of wood hanging around his neck. The reason for the reincarnation of Sage Confucius is that he saw the hen now crowing in the dawn in place of the roosters. Now he and his disciples have failed in their assassination of Empress Dowager Cixi, so he now left the Qing state and went overseas with his seventy-two disciples to wander among those nations. Even people from Lu Town were attracted to Maoyuan Tavern. The first-born son of the Lu clan, a well-educated scholar, was very angry about him. He led a group of young men to that village and smash the Maoyuan Tavern. Lu explained to the crowd, “Kang Youwei is a person like Cao Cao, who wants to manipulate the emperor in order to control all warlords. He and his student wants to force every single person to cut their hair. How can a person like this be the reincarnation of Confucius?” People very much agreed and never went to Maoyuan Tavern again.
In the Ji-You year of Xuantong, A man with the surname Shan, who sold wontons for a living, drank too much at night, and fell into the river and drowned. This man was the fourth born in his clan, but had no siblings of his own family. His parents were both passed away. After his death, the family was left with no one but his orphan and widow. Mrs. Shan was good-looking, non-educated, who get married with her husband at a young age. An unemployed man in the neighborhood, the fifth born in his clan, took advantage of the death of Mrs. Shan's husband and tried to propose to her. Mrs. Shan rejected him and said, “My man passed away. Although I don't have parents-in-law to do my filial duty, he still left a boy who needs my care. Why do you say such things to a widow when the mourning period is not yet over?” Some people praise that in this town, even a women who cannot read can practice the ethical conduct.

THIS WEEK IN AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY - Charles Baker, The Little-Known Inventor of The First Friction Radiator  - Chattanooga News Chronicle
FRICTION RADIATOR
"After years of trials, his device was near-perfect at the time it was invented. Baker’s device was made up of two metal cylinders, with one inserted into the other. A wooden spinning core was put in the center to produce the friction.
Any notable newsreels hailed his invention. “On March 27, 1904, the New York Times’ edition identified Baker’s invention as a “Clever Negro Invention”. Other newspapers such as Daily Gazette and News-Press also published his story in 1904 indicating that his invention would “revolutionize the then heating systems.”
Baker then created a factory called The Friction Heat and Boiler Company in 1904 in St. Joseph with him as the head of board of directors. His company employed 50 skilled and unskilled labors to produce more radiators and had about $136,000 in capital stocks.
At the time, Baker’s capital stock was a lot of money which made him an affluent and honorable man in his hometown. His loyalty to his employees made his business thrive and although racial prejudice often posed as a threat to his finances, his business flourished."

Whether you're a business owner considering closing down your venture or an individual curious about the procedure, understanding the reasons, procedures, and the status of company strike-offs is crucial. In this article, we'll delve deep into the realm of company strike-offs, shedding light on the various aspects of this process and providing valuable insights.
Strike Off of Company Reasons, Procedures, and Status
When a business reaches a point where it's no longer feasible to continue its operations, opting for a company strike-off becomes a viable solution. A company may choose to strike off due to various reasons:
Financial Challenges and Insolvency
Financial instability is a common reason for a company's strike off. In cases of insurmountable debt, liquidating the company's assets and distributing the proceeds among creditors might be the best course of action.
Completion of Business Objectives
A company formed for a specific project or purpose might choose to strike off once its objectives have been fulfilled. This prevents the entity from incurring unnecessary costs.
Mergers and Acquisitions
During a merger or acquisition, it's not uncommon for redundant entities to be struck off to streamline operations and reduce administrative burdens.
Administrative and Compliance Burdens
Companies facing challenges in meeting regulatory requirements or maintaining compliance might opt for strike off to avoid penalties.
Step-by-Step Procedures for Company Strike Off
The procedure for striking off a company involves several steps, ensuring a systematic and legal process:
Board Resolution: The company's directors must pass a resolution to strike off the company. This requires majority approval.
Clearance of Liabilities: All outstanding debts and liabilities must be cleared before proceeding with the strike off.
Asset Liquidation: If required, the company's assets are liquidated to settle any remaining debts.
Clearance from Regulatory Authorities: Obtain necessary clearances from tax authorities and other regulatory bodies.
Shareholder Approval: Shareholders must pass a special resolution for strike off during a general meeting.
Application Submission: The strike-off application, along with required documents, is submitted to the appropriate regulatory authority.
Public Notice: A notice is published in an official gazette or newspaper, inviting objections within a specified period.
Strike Off Certificate: If no objections are received, the regulatory authority issues a strike off certificate, officially dissolving the company.
Current Status of Company Strike Offs
As of the latest data, company strike offs are on the rise globally. Economic fluctuations, shifts in industries, and the impact of the pandemic have led to an increase in businesses choosing this route. In 2022 alone, over 10,000 companies were struck off in the United States, signaling a significant trend.

The Met Gala. Fashion Week. Two facets of the New York fashion scene that are now so ubiquitous that it’s hard to imagine what the fashion industry would be like without them.
So it’s surprising that, despite how well-recognized these two events are, very few people discuss Eleanor Lambert, the woman who started it all.
Hello, and welcome to VENUSSTADT, a channel devoted to discussing women and gender in the realm of arts and culture. I’m Jiana; today, I’ll be covering Eleanor Lambert, the famed fashion publicist who helped lift the American fashion industry into international prominence.
EARLY LIFE.
Eleanor Olive Lambert was born August 10, 1903, in Crawsfordville, Indiana (Collins 2004), a city which at the time had around 6,700 citizens. Her father, Henry Clay Lambert, was a newspaper publisher-turned-circus advance man, going ahead of companies like Ringling Brothers and P.T. Barnum & Bailey during tours to publicize show dates, leaving behind his five children, including Eleanor, with their mother Helen (Collins 2004).
Early on, Eleanor displayed an interest in the arts. She attended the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis to study sculpture, using the money she earned from cooking and preparing meals for other college students and writing a shopping column for The Indiana Star and the Fort-Wayne Journal Gazette (Collins 2004). After marrying her first husband and moving to Illinois, she briefly attended the Art Institute in Chicago (Collins 2004). However, she eventually gave up her sculpting dreams, saying, “I have always loved and been inspired by beauty, but I realized quite early on that my own artistic production was mediocre. One has to know when one isn’t up to the task” (Thurman).
In 1925, Lambert moved from Illinois to New York City (Collins 2004). By this time, she had divorced her first husband, and made a living of around $32 a week writing a fashion newsletter called  Breath of the Avenue and working as a book publicist (Collins 2004; Harbster 2012). After observing her passion for promotion, Franklin Spears, her boss at the book company, recommended she start her own publicity business using his office (Wilson 2003; Collins 2004). Thus, she struck it solo, visiting various art galleries on New York’s 57th street and offering to do publicity for them for a weekly fee of $10 ($165 today), an offer which 10 galleries accepted (“Eleanor Lambert” 2022). Her early artist clients included Isamu Noguchi, Salvador Dali, and Jackson Pollock (Collins 2004; Harbster 2012). Eleanor also represented large entities, such as the American Art Dealers Association and the Whitney Museum of Art when it was founded in 1930 (Collins 2004).
CAREER.
Eleanor first entered the fashion world in 1932, after being contacted by designer Annette Simpson, who saw Eleanor’s publicity work in a newspaper (Collins 2004; Diliberto 2009). Though Annette never ended up paying Eleanor for any promotion work, she did inspire Lambert to go into fashion promotion (Collins 2004).
At the time Eleanor had arrived in New York, American designers were not as recognized as those in Paris, which was the fashion capital of the world (Harbster 2012) and had been since the days of King Louis XIV, who used the French fashion industry as a “soft power” to culturally dominate the Western world (Diliberto, 2009). Department stores and manufacturer’s encouraged American designers to copy Parisian designers, and most wealthy women got their clothing directly from Paris (Diliberto, 2009). Plus, New York fashion magazines like Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and Women’s Wear Daily exclusively covered French designers (Harbster 2012).
When Eleanor became interested in the fashion world, she decided she wanted to change this. According to Vanity Fair’s Amy Fine Collins, Lambert figured, “If American art was recognized as a legitimate school…why not American fashion? And why, for that matter, did Americans design anonymously, with only a manufacturer’s name on the label, when their French counterparts were world-famous?” (Collins 2004).
Diana Vreeland, who at the time was an editor for Harper’s Bazaar, basically called Eleanor crazy when Eleanor shared this idea, but Eleanor did not let this stop her (Collins 2004)! She began to shift to fashion publicity and put her all into promoting American designers, including supporting the Museum of Costume Art when it was founded in 1937 (Nemy 2003; Young 2012). Later, when the Museum was absorbed into the Metropolitan Museum of Art and became the Costume Institute, Eleanor Lambert devised a fundraising dinner referred to as the Costume Institute Benefit (Young 2012).
By 1939, her clients included, according to Jennifer Harbster, “department stores, beauty brands, perfumes, [and] American and European fashion designers” as well as “hotels, art galleries, nightclubs, [and] restaurants” (Harbster 2012).
Major opportunities to support the fashion industry came in the 1940s, after Eleanor became the New York Dress Institute’s press director (Nemy 2003; Collins 2004; Harbster 2012). World War II began in Europe in 1939, and in June 1940, Paris fell under Nazi occupation (De La Haye 2020). Like the rest of the French art scene, the Paris fashion industry took a hit as its aesthetics were deemed by the Nazis to be “corruptive” and “degenerate.” Its fashion publications shuttered, and resources refocused on servicing Nazi elite as opposed to the rest of the world (De La Haye 2020).
With Paris now isolated, there was a void in fashion which multiple New York department stores and manufacturers sought to fill with American products. That same year, the New York Dress Institute formed during the war to promote New York fashion and fill this void (Collins 2004). To advertise clothing, they initially approached the J. Walter Thompson agency, who created ads based heavily on pro-American propaganda (Collins 2004). The advertisements chided American women for only having one dress in Paris’ absence, while another utilized imagery of Martha Washington tending to dying soldiers (Collins 2004). Though these ads helped the dresses sell, the department store owners considered them tacky, and sought Eleanor’s expertise (Collins 2004).
The first thing that Eleanor did when she became the Dress Institute’s press director was demand they promote their designers (Collins 2004). This was accomplished by forming the Dress Institutes’ “Couture Group,” a group of the manufacturer’s best designers, which included Nettie Rosenstein, Jo Copeland, Maurice Rentner, and Hattie Carnegie (Collins 2004).
To further promote the Couture Group and American designers, Lambert in 1943 created New York Press Week (Collins 2004) where journalists could convene in one building on Seventh Avenue to cover collection showings (Diliberto 2009; Harbster 2012). Whereas prior to Press Week, only local NY journalists could cover collection showings, Eleanor offered to pay for the travel expenses of non-NY journalists so that they could spread the word in other areas of the United States (Collins 2004). Only a third of the journalists Eleanor invited showed up to the first Press Week in January 1943 (Diliberto 2009), but the novelty and convenience of Press Week helped it become more popular and respected as years went by.
One other idea that Eleanor implemented for the Dress Institute was the International Best-Dressed list, which began shortly after she became press director in 1940 (Collins 2004; “Eleanor Lambert” 2003). The idea wasn’t wholly original; Eleanor had borrowed it from the Paris Best-Dressed List, which had ceased operations under Nazi occupation as well (“Eleanor Lambert” 2003).
“I was desperate, reaching for anything that might help,” Eleanor said later of her decision to appropriate the list (Collins 2004).
To start, she sent out fifty ballots to international fashion experts like John Frederics, Jo Copeland, Lilly Daché, and the Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar editors (Collins 2004). The first list was topped by a woman named “Mrs. Williams;” others included socialites Dorothy H. Hirshon (then Dorothy Paley) and Millicent Rogers (Collins 2004). The second list in 1941 included fashion icons and celebrities like Diana Vreeland, Barbara Cushing, and Rosalind Russell, as well as Madame Chiang, and Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor (Collins 2004).
People included on the list were informed by a telegram, that stated:
“I have the honor to inform you that you have been designated to the newly created Fashion Hall of Fame of the International Best-Dressed Poll conducted annually by [the] Couture Group [of the] New York Dress Institute in permanent recognition [of] your distinguished tasted in dress without ostentation or extravagance. Announcement will be made January 5, meanwhile confidential” (Collins 2004).
The list was rather influential. People begged to be on the list, with one person even trying to bribe Eleanor with $50,000 (Collins 2004). First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt once wrote a complaint to Eleanor Lambert because she was not included on the list; while Byron Foy, a filmmaker whose finances were being investigated, complained that his wife was on the list because he didn’t want it to seem like his wife was spending too much money on fashion (Collins 2004). But the list wasn’t without its detractors. One of the most vocal was John Fairchild, editor-in-chief of Women’s Wear Daily, who called the list “a gimmick and a bunch of rot” (Collins 2004).
John Fairchild and Eleanor Lambert were basically industry rivals (Wilson 2003). John, the grandson of Fairchild Publishing founder Edmund Fairchild and turned Women’s Wear Daily into the “fashion Bible” during his tenure, worked briefly in Paris and was known for making or breaking designers (he was famous for feuds with designers like Valentino, Balenciaga, and Givenchy), heavily promoted Parisians and was often at odds with Eleanor over her promotion of Americans (Collins 2004).
“Fairchild wanted to decide everything to do with fashion,” former Tiffany & Co. director John Loring said to Vanity Fair in 2004. “If it weren’t for Eleanor, his power would’ve been absolute” (Collins 2004).
In the 50s, Eleanor represented designers, manufacturers, and industry groups like International Silk Association—basically most of the fashion industry (Collins 2004). Her day-to-day tasks included sending pictures to newspapers, arranging TV interviews, and admitting journalists to press week (Collins 2004).
“There wasn’t a soul on Seventh Avenue who didn’t have Eleanor behind her,” Joe Eula, who helped Eleanor produce the March of Dimes, said to Vanity Fair. “If you couldn’t afford her, and you wanted her, she’d work for free” (Collins 2004).
Eleanor took a brief break in 1959 when her second husband, Seymour Berkson, died of a heart attack. She went through deep depression, which she used her work to pull herself out of (Collins 2004).
After 1960, following the election of JFK, First Lady Jackie Kennedy, as well as her sister Lee Radziwill and friend Jayne Wrightsman, were all included on the Best-Dressed List (Collins 2004). Previously, Eleanor had helped Jackie endear herself to the American fashion press by introducing Jackie to Oleg Cassini after Jackie had been criticized by Women’s Wear Daily for wearing French fashion (“Museum at FIT”).
In 1962, Eleanor parted ways with the Dress Institute after what Vanity Fair called “a clash…between manufacturers and designers over Press Week show dates (which she viewed as a battle between commerce and creativity)” (Collins 2004).
From there, she went on to found the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the goal of which was to “further the position of fashion design as a recognized branch of American arts and culture” and to “advance [the trade’s] artistic and professional needs” (CFDA Staff 2012, 10).
“I’ve always said that getting people together as a community helps further their identity as a whole,” Eleanor later told WWD. “We were a group of people of equal qualifications and equal thoughts about moving forward” (CFDA Staff 2012, 10).
While the implementation of Press Week, the Best-Dressed List, and the CFDA all helped boost the American fashion industry’s reputation domestically, perhaps the Eleanor’s best and most well-known effort was the 1973 Battle of Versailles, which helped boost the credibility of American fashion designers internationally (Collins 2004; Harbster 2012).
Gerald van der Kemp, then the curator of Versailles, suggested that Lambert arrange a fundraising event to help restore the queen’s bedroom in Palace of Versailles (Wilson 2003; Fashion By Look 2013). To generate press, Eleanor conceptualized the Grand Divertissement á Versailles, best known as Battle of Versailles, in which American and French fashion designers would face off against each other (Harbster 2012; Borelli-Persson 2022).
Eleanor chose designers Bill Blass, Stephen Burrows, Oscar de la Renta, Anne Klein, and Halston to represent the Americans, while Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Marc Bohan for Dior, Pierre Cardin, and Emmanuel Ungaro were chosen by Marie-Hélène Rothschild and a committee (Harbster 2012). The guest list for the event included figures like Princess Grace of Monaco and Madame Grès, and a weeks’ worth of parties preceded and followed the event (Borelli-Persson 2022).
The Battle of Versailles wasn’t simply a battle of designers, but a battle of culture as well. Josephine Baker and Liza Minelli performed for the French and Americans, respectively; and the difference in the way of the old guard versus the new was evident in the Parisian’s direction choices—a star-studded cast, elaborate performances, grandiose set pieces—as opposed to the New Yorker’s snappy, relaxed flow (Borelli-Persson 2022).
Though the feature-film length display of the French designers certainly affirmed their grandiosity, the consensus among the guests and press who attended was that the American designers took the night, with their laid-back presentation, lively models, and up-to-date tastes.
“The entire French half of the evening was built around glories of the past,” journalist Eugenia Sheppard wrote for the Los Angeles Times in December 1972. “The Paris designers who opened the evening’s entertainment…did everything in their power to confirm the rumor that made-to-order fashion is going out of date. The stage settings were about as contemporary as a bustle and equally as cumbersome” (Borelli-Persson 2022).
In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily shortly before her death, Eleanor Lambert said that she did not set out to “prove” the worth of American designers to the French, and that she only intended for the event to be fun (Wilson 2003). Still, she also said:
“We sure did prove we were equal. People threw their papers in the air and screamed and yelled. It was wonderful. I do feel very proud that American designers are equal to anyone in the world, including the French. They should have had that equality. Versailles was a hilarious and unforgettable thing. It was exciting because, by accident, it became a special thing that proved a point” (Wilson 2003).
In addition to showcasing the talents of New York designers, the Battle of Versailles also had the effect of highlighting Black American talent, such as designer Stephen Burrows and models Pat Cleveland and Bethann Hardison (Keong 2016) and led Givenchy to start its black model cabine consisting of Cleveland, Hardison, Billie Blair, Alva Chinn, Jennifer Brice, and Ramona Saunders (Keogh 2018).
Lambert continued promote American fashion until closing her office in 2002, as she was approaching the age of 100 (Wilson 2003). Tiffany & Co. was among her last clients (Wilson 2003). Though she wasn’t incredibly interested in contemporary fashion after her retirement, and declared fashion shows no longer worth looking at, her last public appearance was at New York Fashion Week, a month before her death in October 2003 (Wilson 2003; “Eleanor Lambert” 2003).
LEGACY.
Much of what Eleanor instituted continues to function today. Press Week has since evolved into New York Fashion Week, and other fashion weeks, such as those in Milan, Paris, and London, capture the attention of fashion buyers, journalists, and enthusiasts twice a year in the spring and fall (Diliberto 2009). The International Best-Dressed List is now controlled by Vanity Fair, who Lambert bequeathed it to prior to her death (Collins 2002). The Costume Institute Benefit, known today as the Met Gala, is now controlled by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. ‘Fashion’s Biggest Night’ continues to draw massive attention to the New York fashion scene and raises millions of dollars for the Costume Institute each year (Widjojo 2022). The Council of Fashion Designers of America is currently run by Steven Kolb, its CEO & President, and fashion designer Tom Ford, who functions as chairman. It continues to foster and highlight American designers through its annual awards ceremony, scholarships, and grants.

Sri Lanka acting President Wickremesinghe declares emergency
Tumblr media
Jul 18, 2022 08:35 IST Colombo , July 18 (AF): Sri Lanka's Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe issued an Extraordinary Gazette declaring a State of Emergency in the island nation with effect from Monday, as the country grapples with social unrest and crippling economic crisis. The gazette notification says, the public emergency in Sri Lanka has been declared in the interests of public security, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community, local media outlet Daily Mirror reported. The state of emergency has been declared in a proclamation by Wickremesinghe in terms of Article 40(1)(C) of the Constitution, by virtue of the powers vested in him by Section 2 of the Public Security Ordinance (Chapter 40), as amended by Act No. 8 of 1959, Law No. 6 of 1978 and Act No. 28 of 1988, the newspaper reported. Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had offered his resignation after fleeing the country to Singapore. The president first flew to the Maldives after tens of thousands of protesters stormed his official residence in the capital Colombo. The Sri Lankan Parliament announced that the nominations for the Presidential elections will be held on Tuesday and the new President of Sri Lanka will be elected on July 20. It is interesting to note that the main opposition leader Sajith Premadasa is set to contest the presidential elections. Terming the scenario of him winning Sri Lanka's presidential elections an "uphill task", Premadasa on Friday said that he will contest the elections as he is convinced that the truth will prevail. The economy in Sri Lanka is bracing for a sharp contraction due to the unavailability of basic inputs for production, an 80 per cent depreciation of the currency since March 2022, coupled with a lack of foreign reserves and the country's failure to meet its international debt obligations. Hundreds of Sri Lankans continue to queue up at petrol pumps across the debt-ridden country every day amid fuel shortage, and a large number of people are ditching their cars and motorcycles for bicycles for their daily commute. The economic crisis which is the worst in Sri Lanka's history has prompted an acute shortage of essential items like fuel. Long queues at fuel stations in Sri Lanka is the new normal and prices fluctuate subject to availability. Skyrocketing prices of fuel are also one of the reasons behind the spike in bicycle sales and some stores are running out of stock. (AF) Read the full article

For those of you in the US, you may have seen the news about the shooting in Annapolis, Maryland today. While I may not be from Annapolis specifically, growing up (barely) ten minutes away makes it home. It’s still home.
Annapolis is a beautiful place, complete with a downtown harbor guarded by the Naval Academy. Life on the water is engrained in your brain at a young age. You celebrate the kick off of summer watching the Blue Angels soar in the sky. You spend your summers eating crabs doused in Old Bay. You attend the hilarious, yet pretentious annual croquet match at St. John’s college in your best yacht attire.
It’s a charming place, fully of history that roots back to the 1600′s. It’s a bustling hub for art galleries, small jewelry shops, and hot yoga studios. It’s hipster and trendy with the likes of Capital Teas and Old Fox Books. And it’s inspirational.
What happened today - and what has been happening in this country for the past few years - is utterly heartbreaking. And yet, completely avoidable. We have to do better. We have to be better. We have to make sure that we teach the next generation that hate, no matter what form it takes, is intolerable on all levels.
Getting news of today’s events from 3,000 miles away was the worst feeling. Knowing that this happened across the street from all of my work friends and close to my best friends was sickening. While I don’t know him as well as some of my friends do, a guy I went to high school with was personally affected by today’s tragedy. His mom was one of the five victims who died and the first words on his Facebook post tonight were: “Mom, I’m not ready to say goodbye.”
5 innocent journalists, whose jobs were to report on events like today, won’t be going home tonight. 5 innocent people - INNOCENT PEOPLE - won’t be returning to their families. 5 people won’t be waking up tomorrow and returning to work, the job they loved enough to die for.
I encourage all of you to visit the Capital Gazette’s website and read about these amazing journalists, contributors, editors, assistants, sons, mothers, daughters, fathers that died today. Read about their lives. Read about their contributions to the community. Read about their stories. Because, like Hannah Gadsby says in her Netflix special - “Stories are our cure.”
I’m not here to get political. I’m here to be real. Real about what’s happening in our culture. Where hate has taken over humanity. Where lives are expendable. Where guns are more accessible to the public than birth control is. Whatever your political views or goals are, I know we can all agree that violence is never the answer.
We need to encourage stricter laws. We need to encourage tolerance. We need to encourage peace. We need to encourage action. And most of all, we need to encourage love. Because without love, the world is a dark place and I don’t know about you, but I’m tired from all this darkness.
