Media Release: Reel Desires CIQFF 2024
TWELFTH EDITION OF REEL DESIRES: CHENNAI INTERNATIONAL QUEER FILM FESTIVAL, SHOWCASES DIVERSE GENDER AND SEXUALITIESÂ AUGUST 16-18, 2024
MEDIA RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
For more information, contact 98415-57983, or email [email protected] or visit www.ciqff.org.
The 12th annual edition of Reel Desires: Chennai International Queer Film Festival will be held at the Goethe-Institut, Chennai, from August 16-18, 2024. Reel Desires features films, shorts and documentaries showcasing sexuality and gender diversity issues. This yearâs line-up consists of 20 films from nine countries, selected via a community-led review process. The principal organisers of CIQFF 2024 are Orinam and Goethe-Institut Chennai, working in collaboration with Nirangal Charitable Trust and SAATHII.
Commencing Friday Aug 16, 2024, the film festival opens with Love and Let Love, an evocative short by Shailaja Padindala (2024) that examines unconventional love in couples of two generations. Other highlights of Friday include Prayers for Sweet Waters by Elijah Ndoumbe (2021) a look into the vivid realities of three transgender women living in Cape Town, South Africa, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ili-Ili (Little One) by Clister Santos (2024) is a charming animation in which a pregnant woman seeks parenting advice from her two gay dads. It was part of the 2024 Five Films for Freedom selection of BFI FLARE, London International LGBTQIA+ film festival. Fridayâs feature film My Fatherâs Clothes (Anima: Die Kleider meines Vaters, by Uli Decker(2022), set in Bavaria, is a story about family secrets, gender issues and the turmoil of love - told as a roller coaster ride through animated and documentary imagery. Among the films on Saturday, August 17, the internationally acclaimed  Jodi (If) Bengal short by Tathagata Ghosh (2024) explores the tribulations of an arranged marriage that tears a lesbian couple apart, suggesting that with a motherâs love, perhaps another future is possible. Samlingi a documentary debut by Mohan Singh Aulakh (2024) explores queer lives in rural and urban lives in Punjab.   Hai Con Chuá»t (Two Little Mice) by Nguyen Anh Thach (2024) depicts the tender affection between a gay man and his crush, on the eve of the latterâs wedding to his girlfriend. Make-up Majhi Dhaal Ga (Make-Up Is My Shield) by Kunal Vijayakar (2024) is a short music video in the Laavni style of song and dance from Maharashtra. It follows the affectionate banter between a cis heterosexual man and his trans sister as the latter recounts her process of embracing her transness and decision to perform an exaggerated femininity. As part of CIQFF2024âs collaboration with the British Council, we bring you three shorts from the British Council Touring Programme series âMore Films for Freedomâ. On Saturday, the UK/Nigerian film Egungun (Masquerade) by Olive Nwosu ( 2021) explores a womanâs return to her hometown in Lagos, and her new understanding of the people and experiences that shaped her.Â
Saturdayâs film screenings will be followed by a panel discussion Surviving Queerphobia: Online and Offline. Panelists, who include members of Chennaiâs LGBTQIA+ communities and allies, discuss the upsurge in homophobia and transphobia in recent months leading up to Pride month, influenced by the âgender criticalâ movements and bathroom panic of the global north. Following the panel discussion will be a hip-hop party on the roof of Goethe-Institut, with spot registration and entry limited to 100 persons. It will be DJâed by K. Phani Kumar and team.
The program on Sunday, August 18, commences at 3 pm with Naan oru Pen (I am a woman) a 17 minute solo theatrical performance by Sowmiya in Tamil, directed by A. Mangai. The performance draws on poet-memoirist Maya Angelouâs Phenomenal Woman and Still I Rise, to present an embodied narration of un-making the body, lived experience and resilience of queerness, especially of a trans life in India.
Highlights among the shorts on Sunday include Ragasiya, a Tamil short on love and friendship by Chandrasekar Srinivasan (2024) featuring Chennaiâs own Prahasini Arumugam as the protagonist. Love Positive by Tushar Tyagi (2024) speaks of love among two gay men, one of whom is living with HIV. Melvilasam (Address) by Hariprasad KN (2024) is a heartwarming documentary of Parvathi T.S and her arduous journey of becoming the first openly trans postwoman in India, and successfully changing name and gender markers in her government identity documents. They/Them by Phelian (2023) describes the self-realisation of a 49-year-old art professor of their non binary identity.
The film festival closes with the Gujarati feature film Katlaa Curry by Rohit Prajapati (2024). Set in a sleepy fishing village along the banks of the river Narmada, a local fisherman, Raaymal, pulls a young man, Ratan, adrift in his fishing net, setting off a journey of profound connection and self-discovery.
As LGBTQIA+ collectives in India advocate for inclusive institutions and reduced discrimination,, we also work to engender change in hearts and minds, a task substantially more challenging than legal reform. One way we do this is by participating in and producing cultures that reflect both the universality and specificity of our experiences.
Reel Desires: Chennai International Queer Film Festival 2024, curated under this name since 2013, is the latest in a series of over 19Â queer-themed film festivals held in Chennai to date, beginning in November 2004. The event is free and open to individuals 18 years and older.

LGBTQ+ megastars have long dominated gospel music. Their flair has shaped the âsoul-stirringâ genre.
Every Black History Month, there is a tribute to the Black Church and its gospel music. The contribution of LGBTQ+ singers to the canon of gospel music, however, is never front and center in the celebration of its history. Every churchgoer â straight and gay â knows the inimitable style and flair LGBTQ+ singers bring, a style that has long been part and parcel of gospel music. Moreover, what would gospel music be without the boys in the choir loft and gay church musicians? There is an undeniable queerness to gospel music, a particular interpretation, and expressiveness by LGBTQ+ folks, churched and unchurched. As repressive as the Black church is around openly LGBTQ+ identities, many of us are nonetheless drawn to its gospel music. Related: I wasnât always proud to be a Black queer man. But one heart-wrenching moment changed everything. After years of struggle, I now advocate for LGBTQ+ rights across the country. Hereâs what it took for me to get there. âItâs Black folksâ prayer and lamentation. Itâs our language and expression as a people that cannot be taken away. It speaks to times of great joy and sorrow. It mirrors my breath and the beating of my heart. It is soul-stirring, and a meditation with your spirit with whoever and whatever is your God,â churchgoer Gary Bailey waxed poetically. Bailey is a professor of practice and assistant dean for community engagement and social justice at Simmons School of Social Work and is a member of Union United Methodist Church, the first âopen and affirmingâ Black church in New England. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our daily newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. The Black church applauds its LGBTQ+ congregants in the choir pews yet excoriates us from the pulpits. It pimps our talent yet damns our souls with the theological qualifier of âlove the sinner but hate the sin.â Our connections and contributions to the larger Black religious cosmos are desecrated every time homophobic pronouncements go unchecked in these holy places of worship. However, our pull to gospel music is seen as a calling, a distinctive gift to the church, and an expression of queer pain and hardship. For Charles Evans, former vice president of Cape Cod Pride, âGospel music is tied to suffering, Black suffering and certainly Black gay suffering. It communicates our trials and tribulations through song that a better day will come.â Evans and his spouse, Paul Glass, are program coordinators for LGBT Elders of Color. Donell Patterson said his âentire life has been gospel music,â and he has the resume to prove it. Patterson is chair of the Gospel Music department in New England Conservatoryâs Preparatory School and conducts three renowned Gospel Choirs in the Boston Area. Patterson has observed through the years that some Black church denominations are queerer than others. âThose denominations are more open to gays without announcing it, because of its liturgy and organizational structure like Pentecostal churches,â Patterson shared. The Church of God in Christ (COGIC) is the largest Black and Pentecostal church in the United States. Many of the gospel music industry mega-stars are from COGIC. The church, however, is conflicted with itself. These Black gay male mega-stars are always forced back into the closet, publicly denouncing their sexual orientation at the churchâs annual convocation. Toxic masculinity contributed to the early years of AIDS, ravaging the gospel industry. The effects of AIDS were widely discussed but rarely publicly acknowledged until the death of James Cleveland, the King of Gospel, in 1991. Cleveland was influential in bringing gay men into the industry. He was a fixture at gay parties in cities he toured, and his sexuality was an open secret. However, the most devastating news following Clevelandâs death was when a male member of Clevelandâs choir sued his estate, alleging he contracted HIV⊠http://dlvr.it/T3FS5C

Tours Cape York: A Journey Into The Heart Of Australia
Welcome to Australia! We're about to take you on a journey that will take you across one of the most beautiful countries in the world. We'll begin the blog of heritage tours Cape York. Let's get started!
Cape York, Australia
Cape York is a large cape on the northern coast of Australia. It forms part of the state of Queensland and is located at the most northerly point of continental Australia. Cape York Peninsula has an area of 47,000 square kilometers (18,000 square miles) with about 22% being national park or nature reserve.
The peninsula was named by James Cook during his first voyage to Australia in 1770 after he sighted it aboard HM Bark Endeavour when sailing north from Botany Bay towards New Guinea. He identified it as an island but did not land there because he deemed it too dangerous due to bad weather conditions
The Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world, and it's located off the coast of Queensland. It covers an area of over 350,000 sq km (140,000 sq mi), making it larger than Tasmania!Â
The Great Barrier Reef extends for 2,300 kilometers (1,429 miles) along Australia's northeast coast from Bundaberg to the tip of Cape York Peninsula. The reef has more than 900 islands and cays that form part of its structure--from tiny coral cays used mainly by birds as nesting sites to larger islands where people live or visit for holidays.
Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest
The Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest are two of Australia's most impressive natural wonders. The area includes three national parks--Cape Tribulation, the Mossman Gorge, and the Daintree National Park--as well as some of Queensland's most scenic beaches. Whether you're a nature buff or just want to see something different from your typical beach trip, this region is a great place to visit!
The rainforest itself is home to an abundance of fascinating plants and animals that are endemic (found nowhere else on Earth) or near-endemic (found only in certain areas). There are also plenty of places where you can explore the rainforest without getting too deep into it: there are trails leading through parts of these forests that are open for tourists like us!
Palm Cove - Tropical Paradise
Palm Cove is a tropical paradise in the heart of Australia. It is a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over the world, and it has many luxury resorts, restaurants, cafes, and bars as well as water activities such as snorkeling or scuba diving.
The Atherton Tableland
The Atherton Tableland is a plateau in Far North Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Great Dividing Range and lies approximately 160 km (99 mi) inland from Cairns.
The plateau was formed by sedimentary rocks laid down during the Mesozoic era when Australia was part of Gondwana. The last ice age covered much of Australia with glaciers that deeply carved out valleys in which most streams now flow to this day.
The area has been inhabited for at least 40,000 years by Indigenous Australians who migrated from Asia over a land bridge known as Torres Strait Islander People arrived around 2,500 years ago
Cape York is a beautiful place, and we hope you enjoyed our tours of Cape York!

Queensland, Australia is no short of wonders! Dive into the worldâs largest coral reef or drive past the heritage-listed rainforests and no matter what you do, Queensland will leave you speechless in no time!
As itâs easy to get lost in all the incredible experiences Queensland offers, weâve made it easy for you by choosing the top 10 experiences to try there.
1. Snorkel with the locals in the Great Barrier Reef
Itâs a no brainer that this 2300 km stretch of coral paradise is one of the places you should definitely visit in your lifetime. There are tonnes of ways to take in the beauty of the placeâfrom snorkelling and scuba diving to 360-degree aerial touring in a helicopter. Learn about its significant role in Australiaâs rich ecosystem only to come back respecting this place more. Most popular areas for Indian travelers to access the Great Barrier Reef are Cairns, the Whitsundays, and the Bundaberg region in Queensland.
2. Explore the Daintree, the oldest tropical rainforest in the world
An easy 2-hour drive from Cairns is all it takes to visit this world heritage-listed tropical rainforest thatâs nestled between Port Douglas and the Great Barrier Reef. Cruise through the Daintree river photographing saltwater crocodiles, do the Mossman Gorge dreamtime walk and learn about the Kuku Yalanji tribe, and  youâll never want to leave this place so intertwined with nature!
3. Visit a heritage-listed waterfall such as the Wallaman Falls
Nothing rewarding like a beautiful waterfall at the end of a trek and Queensland has got plenty of it! Trek through the mesmerizing petrichor-infused Girringun rainforest and wait for it, the Wallaman waterfalls is nothing like you have ever seen! The spine-chilling view from the top, in particular, is no less than an awe-inspiring adventure youâll keep telling stories about. And off the record, have you tried crafting your adventure vacations with Pickyourtrail? Itâs our proud niche we donât always call out, but specialise in.
4. Spend time island hopping in the Whitsunday region
One of Australiaâs most iconic destinations, the Whitsundays are a group of 74 jewel-like islands that sit right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Hop from Hamilton to Whitsunday or Long island, relax on Whitehaven Beach â one of the worldâs best beaches, or get out on the water in the sailing capital of the country.
Donât forget about the mainland, though. The Whitsunday Coast has charms of its own, with great beaches, national parks and the buzzing town of Airlie Beach.
Also fly over the iconic Heart Reef, one of its kind in the world!
5. Cuddle a Koala in one of many wildlife sanctuaries
Australia has amazing wildlifeâif itâs not called out enough already! It crept into peopleâs bucket list when celebrities like Chris Hemsworth and our homegrown Bollywood Star Parineeti Chopra started posting pictures of them cuddling with the cute animals. Get up close to these amazing marsupials in Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary - Brisbane, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary - Gold Coast, Cairns Wildlife Dome - Cairns, Hartleyâs Crocodile Adventures - Port Douglas and of course Australiaâs largest zoo â Australia Zoo!
6. Skypoint Adventure Climb - Witness the gorgeous skylines of the Gold Coast Â
Why go under the radar when you can go over the top? Climb straight atop the Q1 tower observation deck, 270 meters in a 90 minute-adventure, to put the incredible beauty of the Gold Coast region in perspective. All the better if you choose to climb during the sunset - take in the panoramic views of the sprawling metropolis complemented by a golden-hued skyline.
7. Revel in the buzzing nightlife and dining scenes of Queensland
Australia is not just wildlife and nature. Thereâs an unspoken nightlife scene in Queensland thatâll keep even the non-partygoers entertained. Eat your way around Queensland in Northshore Eat Street thatâs lavishly dotted with streetside food stalls and fine-dining rooftop bars, or level up your gourmet game by visiting Miami Marketta, the buzzing night market. The list doesnât end here â Howard Smith Wharves and the Collective Palm Beach, are also the must-visit places that light up Australiaâs nightlife.
8. Head on a road trip from Cairns to Cape Tribulation via Port Douglas
If a road trip in Australia is on your mind you have probably heard of the Great Barrier Reef drive which most gracefully straddles the Great Barrier Reef and Port Douglas and gives major road trip goals! The best itinerary through this route is the one which connects Cairns and Cape Tribulation via Port Douglas. South African Film Festival opens online this week with vibrant film, doco program
The Festival runs May 12-24 with special in-cinema closing night screenings in Sydney and Melbourne. All ticket proceeds go to programs supporting vulnerable groups in South Africa.
Weâre not getting to South Africa anytime soon, so the South African Film Festival brought it here.
Three years strong, the Festival launched in Bondi in 2019, went online in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and this year will run online May 12-24 with special in-cinema closing night screenings in Sydney and Melbourne. All ticket proceeds this year go to programs supporting vulnerable groups in South Africa.
This yearâs program includes documentaries, feature films and two short features.
âThereâs a range of intrinsic directorial visions extrapolating South Africaâs past, present and future,â said Festival director Clare Jankelson. âEach year the focus is to find a selection of proudly South African films that brings the vibrancy of the unique South African culture and its people to our Australian, and for the first time this year, New Zealand, audiences.â
The program kicks off on Wednesday May 12 with documentary Influence, billed with world leaders Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela and Jacob Zuma as stars.
âThe disgraced PR powerhouse Bell Pottinger, with everything that went wrong, came to light with the probe into the severe Government corruption under the Zuma presidency,â said Clare. âThe film highlights the relationship of truth and power on a global platform and shows how political spin and âfake newsâ sway public perception.â
âThis film won Best Documentary at the Durban International Film Festival in South Africa in 2021 and was a nominee for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.â
The documentary bears an especially strong resonance in light of events transpiring only this week past, with the ruling African National Congressâ Secretary-General Ace Magashule, currently facing fraud and other charges, being suspended by the ANC.
With South African politics remaining a consistent theme of the Festival and ever-present in the minds of South Africans both abroad and in Australia, the focus is even stronger this year in light of an unprecedented emphasis on documentaries.
âWe usually try to find a balance between feature films, documentaries and short films, but this year and due to the global pandemic, most feature film productions slowed down, and documentaries were more readily available,â said Clare. âItâs a curation of âfresh off the pressâ features launched at international Film Festivals before local South African release, like Influence and Barakat, or past releases with accolades. The Festival offers a reminder of South Africaâs history pre and post-Apartheid together with climate and environmental references that speaks to a country rich with remarkable nature and wildlife.â
Barakat, translating to âblessingsâ in Urdu, follows a Muslim, Malay community residing in Cape Town where the feature was also completed. Also selected for the 2021 Pan African Film Festival, Barakat was the Closing Night feature of Londonâs most recent Film Africa Festival.
âBarakat is produced by Nagvlug Films, itâs dynamic young Writer/Director Amy Jephta and her producing partner Ephraim Gordon,â said Clare. âThey brought together a stellar cast of mostly Muslim people in order to achieve a nuanced integrity in their depictions of ordinary family life.â
âThis passionate little family film with so much heart, which is in the vain of Minari, will not only appeal to the African diaspora across Australia and New Zealand, but to all communities trying to overcome the trials and tribulations of this year of a global pandemic. The film will be released at the same time as the South African release and during the time of breaking the fast in celebration of Eid-al-Fitr (commencing May 12, 2021), a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims world-wide marking the end of the fasting of Ramadan.â
One of four documentaries on the program, Blindside covers the 1974 British Lionsâ boycott-breaking Apartheid-era tour of South Africa. Reflecting on the political role of, and debates around, rugby during the regime, the material will resonate with fans of Clint Eastwoodâs Invictus and those who recall, fondly or not, the recent triumph of South Africa in the World Cup; reminiscent itself of the events depicted in the 2009 drama.
The nationâs Oscar entry Toorbos will also screen; a period drama set in a conservative Knysna forest community chronicling 18-year-old Karolienaâs forced marriage to a shopkeeper and transition to a new reality in a new town. Based on the Dalene Matthee novel, Toorbos too centres on the Governmentâs plans to imminently remove and rehouse the impoverished community. Â
Spanning the genre range to romantic adventure, Riding with Sugar covers pursuit of BMX success, the leadâs romance with a dancer and dreams of a happier life while Sandance! takes us across southern Africa via rehearsals by members of the San community bringing performances and healing dance as far as Botswanaâs annual Kuru Dance Festival.
Gangster flick For Love and Broken Bones follows Motheo, a musician and debt collector who falls for his newest target while Mama Africa utilises five decades of archival footage to present singer Miriam Makebaâs legacy. Exiled from the country for more than 30 years, Makebaâs life took her from the US to Guinea, with her banishment heavily influencing her art.
A New Country and District Six Rising From the Dust, directed by Sifiso Khanyile and Weaam Williams respectively, via contemporary commentary and archival footage chronicle the continued effects of Apartheid, with Good Hope outlining the views, aspirations and experiences of younger South Africans whose earliest memories recall the post-Apartheid nation. Life is Wonderful will look to the earlier impacts of the laws and the story of Denis Goldberg, who was convicted at the infamous Rivonia trial where Mandela, alongside Goldberg and other co-defendents, were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Jozi Gold will highlight the ever-present issue of the environmental state of South Africa and the impacts of mining, with drama Tess exploring the issues of abuse and gender violence through the experiences of a sex worker who falls pregnant.
Letter Reader, one of the short features on the program, follows a 12-year-old boy who becomes his villageâs letter reader.
Continuing the Festivalâs commitment to âEducation without Borders,â all ticket proceeds will go toward a charity assisting vulnerable and young South Africans in some of the nationâs most disadvantaged communities. A strong motivating factor in taking the Festival online last year, Education without Borders and those of their ilk are seeking to ameliorate conditions further impacted by an as of yet very limited vaccine rollout and the highest mortality rate in Africa. Â An education foundation functioning in South Africa since 2002, their roles are as crucial as ever now given the extent to which COVID-19 has impacted the country with many communities now left even more bereft of requisite resources amidst lengthy lockdowns.
There resides a strong Australian-South African community surrounding the South African Film Festivalâs foundations in Bondi but going online has meant the Festival bears an even greater opportunity to reach more ex-pats, community members and local film fans than before. For local residents of the South African community keenly watching what is happening overseas, some of whom have had to forestall long-awaited trips to Bloemfontein or Johannesburg, this author included, itâs a more than welcome opportunity to reconnect, re-engage, enjoy some movies and be as close to South Africa as weâre going to get right now.
The South African Film Festival screens online from Wednesday 12 May to Monday 24 May, 2021 in Australia and New Zealand with Closing Night Barakat screenings in Event Cinemas Bondi Junction and Castle Hill together with Melbourneâs Classic Cinema. Get program and ticket information at the Festival website.

Erster Stopp - Cairns

From Australia to New Zealand
Have you planned your trip to Australia and New Zealand? Even if it is your first time visiting two of the best countries for a vacation, we promise you that you will not run out of activities to indulge in. After all, you are about to discover more about the Great Barrier Reef, Sky Diving, water rafting, and wine tasting â just take the leap of faith!Experiencing the Shotover Jet and spending your time dining at a valley, is a combination you wonât want to miss. In this article, you will be guided on 2 types of trips: a valley day trip in Melbourne and a Shotover jet ride in Queenstown.
The Yarra Valley:Â
Wine, food, the landscape, the smell â there are a lot of things to feel in this place. This region is known for its cool climate and 70 wineries. If you are visiting for a day, itâs possible that you and your family will only visit 5-7 wineries, so try to maximize your time instead. Some travelling agencies will prepare a trail for you, but you can still build your own itinerary for this. Here are four wineries you might want to include:
Soumah: âGreat wine is made in the vineyard.â Soumah is specially located in a place where there is a perfectly cool climate, and a wide land made up of ancient soils.
Their wines are inspired from Northern Italy and South Eastern France. The place is also designed like it, which makes it inviting compared to some local wineries. A glass of Vineyard Chardonnay and a cheese plate will make you feel well rested after a very long trip.
Domaine Chandon: Well known for their sparkling wine inspired from French traditions. But before you experience their winery, explore their large establishment first. You will find a lot of wines ready for purchase by the time you enter. But aside from wines, Domain Chandon will inspire you to try their champagnes as well.
TarraWarra Estate: TarraWarra can offer you the best view as you reach their establishment on a hill. The place is purely green, making sure that their vineyards are well tended. They also have an art gallery indoors where they display breathtaking work of art by contemporary Australian artists.
Innocent Bystander: 3 words: Wine and Pizza. Thatâs what Innocent Bystander is good at serving. They also sample wines that will not cost much. Make sure you check their food menu as they prepare the best ones.
Most of these wineries collect $5 for winetasting, make sure you taste everything.
Shotover Jet
Got your flight ticket to Queenstown prepared? Shotover jet offers family packages so that you can save more dollars for food and activities. This amazing white water ride has been offering the best slide towards the narrow canyons. Their Shotover jet has been awarded and repeatedly visited by many tourists. And because of that, they are the only company permitted to control these rides at the canyons.
Visit our sites for your Australian and New Zealand trip for more information.

Warm Climate Activities in Cairns
Perhaps one of the greatest things in Cairns is that, the moment you step out of the airport, you know youâre going to have an extravagant summer vacation. Your itinerary must include these two activities that we highly suggest here at EverythingCairns:
Hot Air Ballooning
This activity is perfect for the tropical weather Cairns has. Down there, you can swim or walk depending on the kind of activity that suits you. But with the hot air balloon experience at Mareeba, you will be looking down at the vast lands of Cairns that can be beautified when you are gazing from up there.
You can book a balloon flight online and make sure that you have researched about that dayâs weather. Some tours will make it easy for you as they offer a free pick up from any hotel in Cairns. There are a lot of benefits for early birds as well. Travelers can enjoy and witness how the balloons are prepared and talk to locals to gain knowledge about hot air balloons.
White Water Rafting
Experiencing the rivers in Cairns should also be a priority. With Australiaâs rich rivers, you can indulge in this thrill-seeking activity. First, you will feel like itâs just a smooth stroll as the trees pleases your eyes but make sure you get a good grip, because it will suddenly move faster until the end.
There are certain levels you can choose from and rafting professionals willprep you before it starts. Whether you are a beginner or a daredevil, youâll be having something that will definitely meet your standards. Donât miss the white water rafting activities in Tully River and Barron River.
The city is also quite near the Great Barrier Reefs. In there, you can swim with friendly sharks and witness the corals with their color and inhabitants.
Saving Money in Cairns
Travelling is a privilege that requires some cash, thatâs for sure. But in Cairns, you can find some great deals to save more money on your next trip.
Instead of staying in a 5-star hotel for the most part of your trip, lodge in the nearest hostel too. Itâs cheap and you can meet some travelers to guide you all the way. Dorm rooms may cost you 16-30 AUD per night.
But if you prefer a place that has access to a swimming pool, then 3-star hotels can still be a good choice. The price may be higher but there is WiFi access and breakfast will be served.
First time travelers in Australia will have to understand how the public bus system works. You can save more if you donât settle on taxi rides alone. Catch a free shuttle ride from hostels when youâre out of options (and cash). Uber is also a great option, but trying their local rides will add more meaningful value to your trip.
In Cairns, you wonât run out of activities. Hot air balloon for those who prefer an aerial trip. Water rafting for those who prefer to get wet under the warm weather. Or maybe both?

Where the rainforest meets the reef, Part 2
We headed north across the Daintree River, home of the 12 foot saltwater crocodiles, on an old school cable car ferry. We crossed the river on route to Cape Tribulation. Cape Tribulation is the site where the first European explorer, James Cook, ran aground on Endevour Reef. He is famously quoted as saying he named it Cape Tribulation because âhere is where all our troubles began.â
Daintree River
Cape Trib is truly where the rainforest meets the reef. On one side of the steep, seitchback road is dense, sweaty rainforest and on the other side, picturesque tropical sandy beaches. Itâs pretty stunning! Â
Unfortunately we couldnât go swimming because of the year-round danger of jellyfish. Although you can swim at your own risk, most people wonât go in without a wetsuit. There was a very ominous vinegar station at the edge of the beach. Aaron told us that most people donât know they have been stung right away. The jellyfish are very small it my only feel like something brushed up against your leg. Until yu get out of he water and your skin starts to burn. A few minutes later your chest starts to hurt and you canât breath. They then need to rush you to the hospital with simptums similar to a heartattack. aaron reminded me if I got stung I should pour vinegar on the sting or have someone pee on me. I told him not to worry, I have no intention of getting myself in a position to be peed on, even if for my own good.
Aaron treated us to an amazing lunch of âBush tucker.â (Bush snacks) We ate homemade traditional Australian bread called Damper, local honey and fresh tropical fruit. Although Australia doesn not have a lot of naturally growing fruits, because of northern Queenslandâs tropical climate you can grow almost anything there. So we ate fresh passionfruit, jackfruit, papaya and mangoes grwon locally. (Aaron pro tip: when eating raw papaya, squeeze lime juice on it. Tastes awesome!)
After treating us to a traditional bush tucker lunch, he also treated us to a traditional health remedy. We headed out onto the beach in search of a nest of Green Tree Ant nests. Aaron proceed to open their leaf nests and crush a bunch of them in order to make Aussie Vicks Vapor Rub. The poor crushed ants released a smell is just like menthol and peppermint and cleared my sinuses in a way that I canât put into words. They are still clear 24 hours later. And as Aaron said, we only had to kill the ants a little bit.âÂ
Continuing the tour of deadly things, Aaron said we should go find a crocodile now. He wasnât kidding. Just off the public beach, we stepped back into the jungles a few feet to reveal a beautiful water hole, hidden in plain site.
To my astonishment, at the edge of the pool (less than 10 feet from us) was a juvenile giant saltwater croc. It was probably about 5+ feet. Aaron told us not to worry because it was a little one.  âLittleâ is obviously a relative term. I took that as my cue to back away...very slowly.
After the strenuous afternoon of avoiding death we were owed a little treat. We stopped at the Daintree Icre Farm, which sells homemade Ice Cream, with the fruits for all the flavors grown on site. Austraia has a shocking number of fruits Iâve never heard of. My favorite flavors were the Davidson plum and attleseed, which tast kind of like a mocha flavor. Apparently there are 33 speciales of Wattle plant, one of which you can make ice cream out of.
Speaking of wattleseed, on our way back aaron pulled over on the side of the road because he noticed a Silver Wattle plant. We all had a decent amount of bug bites from our day of walking thrugh the rainforrst and so Aaron found a remedy for us. He crush the Wattle leaves as I poured ater on them. This made a faomy soap that we could rub on our sores. It is incredible. It worked a million times better than any anti-itch cream I have ever tried.
I am so sad to say goodbye to Chris and Dan, my Michigander adventre buddies and Aaron, our intrepid guide throuh the dangers of the Rainforest. It was like an old friend showing around town (That is if toen is a rainforest and your friend is showing you all the things that can kill you...)
Latly, I fully endorse Aaron as mayoral candidate of Mossman...really

Get bowled over by Australia with airfares starting at just Rs. 40,000*
Youâve seen videos of people on the sun-kissed beaches of Australia. You have heard your friends talk about their trip to the Great Barrier Reef or how they explored Melbourne. With so many things to offer, Australia is bound to be on top your travel bucket list. Well, itâs time to act on it because leading airlines are offering exclusive prices to fly to Australia. Starting from Rs. 40,000*, the fares are perfect for someone who likes to book their travel in advance. But hurry up, because the sale is valid till 13th December. Read more here.
If thatâs not motivation enough, these eight spots will definitely make up your mind.
1. BONDI, NEW SOUTH WALES
As one of Sydneyâs most popular golden-sand beaches, Bondi Beach needs no introduction. This stretch of sand comes alive with the sunrise, and the party continues all day and well into the night. As you walk to the beach, chances are youâll see surfers riding the waves, swimmers getting their laps in at the Bondi Baths, and plenty of people soaking in the sights and sounds (and sun) from their towels on the sand. You can dip your toes into a true-blue Aussie way of life and sign up for a surfing lesson here; there are plenty of accredited schools along the main stretch thatâll show you the ropes. Grab a bite at the iconic Bondi Icebergs, one of the countryâs oldest swim clubs, or walk the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, a six-kilometre (3.7-mile)
2. WINEGLASS BAY, TASMANIA
Lounging on one of the top ten beaches in the world should be a definite addition to your Aussie bucket list. Tasmaniaâs Wineglass Bay is situated within Freycinet National Park, just a one-hour drive from the capital city of Hobart. A crescent-shaped bay with clear blue waters, hugged by the peaks of the Hazards range â you could spend hours taking Insta-worthy photos here. A cruise along the waters is one of the best ways to get up-close with the bay and its highlights. Spot wildlife and gaze up at the soaring granite cliffs as you learn more about the region and its history.
3. AUSTRALIAâS COLOURFUL LAKES
You can never get enough of Australiaâs coast, but for something a bit different, head towards Western Australia and its colourful lakes. The bubblegum pink lakes of Australiaâs Golden Outback are an astonishing site, and will make a great addition to your Instagram feed. The most famous of the pink lakes is Lake Hillier, near Esperance, an eight-hour drive or short flight from Perth. In this region, you can also visit Lake Ballard near Kalgoorlie, a salt lake that features a permanent art installation of 51 statues. Down in South Australia, you can visit the bright pinks, blues and greens of Lake MacDonnell in the Eyre Peninsula, or even see the worldâs largest ephemeral lake, Lake Eyre. Whether there's water or not, it is a phenomenal sight best taken in on a scenic flight.
4. KANGAROO ISLAND, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
If you are looking for up-close encounters with Australiaâs intriguing wildlife, Kangaroo Island should be a top pick. Located a quick 40-minute flight from Adelaide, over a third of this island is a conservation park that is home to everything from kangaroos and koalas to short-beaked echidnas and tammar wallabies. Youâll find all of this in beautiful surrounds, including natural structures like Admirals Arch and the Remarkable Rocks. Kangaroo Island also provides opportunities for a luxurious retreat, whether it's staying in an award-winning lodge set atop coastal shelves, treating yourself to a massage at a cliff-top spa, or sampling the delicate flavours of marron â a type of crayfish â paired with some of the countryâs best produce, gins, wines and brews.
5. DAINTREE RAINFOREST, QUEENSLAND
Trek through lush jungle amid ancient ferns and green vines as you spy animals and plants that are found nowhere else on the planet. This is the Daintree Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site. Here you can fly through the canopies of an age-old forest on a zipline for a birdâs-eye outlook of the land below, or cruise down the Daintree River towards Cape Tribulation, where the Great Barrier Reef meets the rainforest. You'll also find plenty of lodge and luxury accommodation. This is truly a magical place â itâs no surprise it served as inspiration for the movie Avatar.
6. SNOWFIELDS AUSTRALIA
If you are visiting in the Australian winter (June â August), donât miss a trip to Victoriaâs snowfields. From skiing and snowshoeing to cutting through the powder on a snowmobile and skidding down slopes on a toboggan, thereâs plenty for an adventure-lover to pick from. While youâre here, go on a dog-sledding experience; itâs one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Alpine scenery. You will get a chance to test out your mushing (dog sled driving) skills before spending some time cuddling with your new four-legged friends. But if you'd rather stay cosy indoors, you can opt for a wilderness retreat, where youâll enjoy being curled up in front of a warm wood fire with cheese fondue.
7. VLASOFF CAY, QUEENSLAND
If you want to step off the beaten path towards something secluded and remote, consider Vlasoff Cay. This private sand island is surrounded by the vast blue ocean and appears only at low tide, making it a unique spot for an intimate picnic. You can get here on a helicopter or take a chartered boat from Cairns and settle onto the sand with a delicious picnic lunch and a bottle of bubbly. Â The island is yours to explore, making it the perfect mix of leisure and adventure.
8. HEART REEF, WHITSUNDAYS, QUEENSLAND
When a heart just pops up in nature, you have to check it out. Heart Reef is a naturally formed coral heart found in Hardy Reef in the Whitsundays and was first spotted by an Air Whitsunday pilot flying overhead in 1975. It may have popped up in your Instagram feed once or twice (especially if there was a romantic proposal involved), and though it might look remote, itâs not difficult to get that âGram worthy shot. Its protected nature means that the only way to see it is via a helicopter or light plane flight over â thatâs also the best way to get a photograph (or five) of this romantic location. You can combine the flight with a tour of other incredible sights in the Whitsundays, like Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach.
