Where Do I Start?
Hint: It's not with D&D's 5th Edition.
If you’re looking to break into tabletop roleplaying games, you might be feeling like you’re trying to drink water from a firehose, or worse.
My recommendation?
Stay the f*ck away from Dungeons & Dragons, at least the three-volume set spanning over 1,000 pages. Instead, try something lighter.
Not convinced? I don’t blame ya.
Why lighter? you might be asking.
Lighter rulesets allow us to get our bearings, understand some fundamental concepts, and avoid being excluded long before we try to enter the hobby.
Still not convinced?
Think about it this way: When you were a kid, did you just jump on your bike, start peddling, and go a few dozen miles on
Think about it this way, too: You’ve probably played chess, poker, or any number of games. That’s great! You’ve probably played computer roleplaying games. That’s also great.
However, these aren’t the same as playing face-to-face, virtually, or otherwise, a game where you take on a single persona, sometimes more and sometimes other unusual things, interact with other players and their personas and deal with the conflicts and obstacles thrown at you by a referee, game master, or Dungeon Master.
In some roleplaying games, you might play as the player characters (PCs) and the referee. In any case, your imagination, and your ability to think through, play, and experiment is key. Some of these you’ve honed in other games. On the tabletop, you’ll bring them to bear.
These are different in that tabletop roleplaying games require players to go beyond simply clicking the right place, punching in the right combos, or laying down cards in a particular order. You need to think short- and long-term. Death is (mostly) permanent in many roleplaying games—no reloading saves to avoid death (although that should be a mechanic somewhere). You, as a player, need to rely on social skills, such as communication, playing nice, and collaboration with others. You’ll also need to think in terms of mechanics—how does this impact my play in-game, how can I use this to my advantage, etc.? You must manage resources, roleplay, problem-solve, and think creatively and critically to keep adventuring.
Roleplaying games can be easy, and they can be difficult to tackle. The best advice I can give, as an on-again, off-again player is this: Be prepared to fail, die, and have challenges. Also: Be active, negotiate, and make it an enjoyable experience for everyone by being there in the moment.
Where would I start now that roleplaying games have a bit more limelight?
I’d look for the freebies or the under $5/$10 (or whatever is cheaper in your local currency) games. The best places to start are the online quad: Itch.io¸ DriveThruRPG, Indie Press Revolution, and Exalted Funeral.
You also have Amazon and Lulu with some great indie games on those marketplaces, and you can never go wrong seeking out a local or regional game shop. With the COVID era behind us, some of these game shops have opted to sell online and deliver as well (keep an eye out for these shops).
Skim whatever you find, and then start playing with whoever is willing to go along for the ride—there are more out there these days than when I started, and it’s a great aspect of the hobby.
Need some suggestions? Here are a few to get you started (and, no, they aren’t D&D’s 5th edition):
Lasers & Feelings– Loads of people have hacked this game. The original rules are on it (click on the title for the direct link). Great for Star Trek-style games, space opera, and more. Easy to learn and play. Also: Easy to hack for homebrew games and long-term campaigns.
Breathless (Games) – The vast majority of the games built using the Breathless system are inexpensive, lightweight, super hackable, and friendly for beginners (click on the title for the whole catalog).
Cairn– For that classic D&D experience without the rules bloat.
Sherwood– A mixture of medieval fantasy, Robin Hood mythology, and arcane secrets unleashed.
Notorious — A fun science fiction game, with a recent expansion, that has you playing the notorious bounty hunters in a space opera universe similar to Star Wars.
Mothership – Uses a classic d100/particle die system. It’s a great intro to sci-fi OSR games that are easy to learn, play, and hack to meet any group or player's needs.
Ronin – An excellent solo roleplaying game.
Black Hack (Games) – Classic game hack of the original-ish Dungeons & Dragons, which includes sci-fi, fantasy, cyberpunk, and modern hacks of the original rules from The Black Hack (1st and 2nd editions).

What You Need to Know Before Landing in Australia
Tumblr media
After knowing so much about the rainforests in Australia, it’s hard to dismiss the idea of travelling there. The Great Barrier Reef, Sydney’s Opera House, the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Park, the beaches and almost everything needs to be visited! Except, it’s expensive. And should I mention that it’s the 6th largest country on Earth? The point is, if it’s a one-week trip or even a month, touring the whole country is impossible. But give it 6 to 8 months, it’s doable.
But what’s said above should not discourage you because having fun in Australia is easy, if you’ve entered the airport prepared and aware of the following facts:
1)    The population of animals exceeds the population of people in Australia. You’ve probably heard of funny Australian animal stories before. Some videos of it are even running around the internet. That’s one reason why the land down under is unique. Aside from the fact that there are many Kagaroos there, the sheep population also keeps growing! And if you travel to the southeastern part of Australia, you might get the chance to see a wombat and its cube-shaped poo lying around. Gross but, it surely is something tourists don’t see often. If that doesn’t excite you, how about watching a Koala sleep for 20 hours in the eastern part of Australia? Animal lovers will love the reserves and the national parks even more, because they don’t have to go to Egypt to see camels since they got plenty here. Locals are also on the lookout of those mammals and reptiles that can be poisonous too (example: Tasmanian Devils and Snakes,) and tourists should do the same.

From Australia to New Zealand
Have you planned your trip to Australia and New Zealand? Even if it is your first time visiting two of the best countries for a vacation, we promise you that you will not run out of activities to indulge in. After all, you are about to discover more about the Great Barrier Reef, Sky Diving, water rafting, and wine tasting – just take the leap of faith!Experiencing the Shotover Jet and spending your time dining at a valley, is a combination you won’t want to miss. In this article, you will be guided on 2 types of trips: a valley day trip in Melbourne and a Shotover jet ride in Queenstown.
The Yarra Valley:
Wine, food, the landscape, the smell – there are a lot of things to feel in this place. This region is known for its cool climate and 70 wineries. If you are visiting for a day, it’s possible that you and your family will only visit 5-7 wineries, so try to maximize your time instead. Some travelling agencies will prepare a trail for you, but you can still build your own itinerary for this. Here are four wineries you might want to include:
Soumah: “Great wine is made in the vineyard.” Soumah is specially located in a place where there is a perfectly cool climate, and a wide land made up of ancient soils.
Their wines are inspired from Northern Italy and South Eastern France. The place is also designed like it, which makes it inviting compared to some local wineries. A glass of Vineyard Chardonnay and a cheese plate will make you feel well rested after a very long trip.
Domaine Chandon: Well known for their sparkling wine inspired from French traditions. But before you experience their winery, explore their large establishment first. You will find a lot of wines ready for purchase by the time you enter.  But aside from wines, Domain Chandon will inspire you to try their champagnes as well.
TarraWarra Estate: TarraWarra can offer you the best view as you reach their establishment on a hill. The place is purely green, making sure that their vineyards are well tended. They also have an art gallery indoors where they display breathtaking work of art by contemporary Australian artists.
Innocent Bystander: 3 words: Wine and Pizza. That’s what Innocent Bystander is good at serving. They also sample wines that will not cost much. Make sure you check their food menu as they prepare the best ones.
Most of these wineries collect $5 for winetasting, make sure you taste everything.
Shotover Jet
Got your flight ticket to Queenstown prepared? Shotover jet offers family packages so that you can save more dollars for food and activities. This amazing white water ride has been offering the best slide towards the narrow canyons. Their Shotover jet has been awarded and repeatedly visited by many tourists. And because of that, they are the only company permitted to control these rides at the canyons.

Warm Climate Activities in Cairns
Perhaps one of the greatest things in Cairns is that, the moment you step out of the airport, you know you’re going to have an extravagant summer vacation. Your itinerary must include these two activities that we highly suggest here at EverythingCairns:
Hot Air Ballooning
This activity is perfect for the tropical weather Cairns has. Down there, you can swim or walk depending on the kind of activity that suits you. But with the hot air balloon experience at Mareeba, you will be looking down at the vast lands of Cairns that can be beautified when you are gazing from up there.
You can book a balloon flight online and make sure that you have researched about that day’s weather. Some tours will make it easy for you as they offer a free pick up from any hotel in Cairns. There are a lot of benefits for early birds as well. Travelers can enjoy and witness how the balloons are prepared and talk to locals to gain knowledge about hot air balloons.
White Water Rafting
Experiencing the rivers in Cairns should also be a priority. With Australia’s rich rivers, you can indulge in this thrill-seeking activity. First, you will feel like it’s just a smooth stroll as the trees pleases your eyes but make sure you get a good grip, because it will suddenly move faster until the end.
There are certain levels you can choose from and rafting professionals willprep you before it starts. Whether you are a beginner or a daredevil, you’ll be having something that will definitely meet your standards. Don’t miss the white water rafting activities in Tully River and Barron River.
The city is also quite near the Great Barrier Reefs. In there, you can swim with friendly sharks and witness the corals with their color and inhabitants.
Saving Money in Cairns
Travelling is a privilege that requires some cash, that’s for sure. But in Cairns, you can find some great deals to save more money on your next trip.
Instead of staying in a 5-star hotel for the most part of your trip, lodge in the nearest hostel too. It’s cheap and you can meet some travelers to guide you all the way. Dorm rooms may cost you 16-30 AUD per night.
But if you prefer a place that has access to a swimming pool, then 3-star hotels can still be a good choice. The price may be higher but there is WiFi access and breakfast will be served.
First time travelers in Australia will have to understand how the public bus system works. You can save more if you don’t settle on taxi rides alone. Catch a free shuttle ride from hostels when you’re out of options (and cash). Uber is also a great option, but trying their local rides will add more meaningful value to your trip.
In Cairns, you won’t run out of activities. Hot air balloon for those who prefer an aerial trip. Water rafting for those who prefer to get wet under the warm weather. Or maybe both?

Up your selfie game with these Instagrammable places across Australia!
Tumblr media
Travel instagrammers with an eye for photography know that it’s all about location (location, location!) when it comes to capturing that perfect insta-worthy shot — and boy, have we got some scenic destinations for you!
From stunning aerial landscapes to panoramic perspectives of the countryside, step up your Instagram game and invite wanderlust in your followers with a glimpse of your gypsy lifestyle in Australia.
Here’s our pick of the 7 most picture-perfect destinations in Australia to get excited about.
Bondi Beach — Sydney, NSW
A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Dec 6, 2014 at 12:01pm PST
With countless events and markets held on this popular stretch of sand each year, it’s no surprise why Bondi Beach has made it to the top of the list as one of Australia’s most famous (and Insta-worthy) destinations.
Soak up some fun and sun along this one-kilometre long shore, join the local sun-worshippers for a morning run, surf session or yoga practice by the beach, or simply enjoy a refreshing dip in the ocean because who needs a reason for that? Once you’ve worked up an appetite, pop by the iconic Bondi Icebergs Club for a scrumptious seafood platter, with views overlooking the beach and historic pool.
Wave Rock — Hyden Wildlife Park, WA
A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Jun 8, 2015 at 11:40pm PDT
A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Jun 7, 2017 at 2:04pm PDT
The Wave Rock in Hyden is a fascinating rock formation that has been around for more than 2.7 billion years. Standing 15 metres tall and stretching more than 110 metres long, the massive wave is slowly becoming a prominent Instagram sensation among tourist attempting to ‘surf’ granite cliff.
The area also features other curiously named rock formations (e.g. The Humps, Hippo's Yawn and Mulka's Cave) just a four-hour drive from Perth that are equally worth checking out.
Port Stephens — North Coast, NSW
A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Oct 19, 2016 at 3:11am PDT
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the stunning sandscapes of the Port Stephens. If you’re looking to add some POV action shots to your Instagram répertoire, an exhilarating ride on a quad bike or taking a four-wheel drive tour will do just the trick.
Get your adrenaline pumping as you race across Australia’s largest sand dune system on the ultimate adventure ride, surf down 40-metre high sand slopes on custom sandboards or explore the unique and sandy terrain at a more relaxed pace on a camel or horse ride, located just two and a half hours north of Sydney.
Sunflower Route — Southern Queensland Country, QLD
A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Jan 1, 2016 at 12:07pm PST
If you’re a fan of all things flora, take the scenic drive from Warwick to Allora and be greeted by fields of giant golden sunflowers as far as the eye can see. Located just two hours away from the city of Brisbane, the 50-kilometre long ‘Sunflower Route’ is easily the most dazzling sight in Southern Queensland.
The best times to take in the yellow splendour is from December to February, when the sunflowers are in full bloom. Be sure to take plenty of pictures of the sunny vista during this time of year.
Bridestowe Lavender Estate — Nabowla, TAS
A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Jan 24, 2017 at 2:10am PST
Another beautiful floral sight to visit during the warm summer months (Dec to Jan) is at the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, where visitors get the chance to stroll through endless rows of lavender plants for a breathtaking and aromatic explosion of purple, located just 50 kilometres from Launceston (45 minutes by car).
A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Jan 13, 2015 at 10:54pm PST
The famous estate contains a variety of luxury lavender infused hand creams and soaps, scented potpourri and its divine lavender flavoured ice cream!
Hardy Reef — Whitsundays, QLD
A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Feb 14, 2017 at 10:01pm PST
Capture paradise from above with a scenic flight over the spectacular Hardy Reef to experience the sheer magnitude of the Great Barrier Reef from the air. Get a bird’s eye view of the sparkling waters before delving deeper beneath the waves for an afternoon of snorkelling and coral viewing.

A post shared by Australia (@australia) on Mar 26, 2017 at 11:00pm PDT

23.09.2017 - Australien, Cairns, Queensland
See you soon, guys! 😊
