You’ve already read a lot on my blog about the Canon nFD 2.8/300L lens (link below), but it had a really impressive technology predecessor, the 2.8/300 S.S.C. Fluorite. In addition to the Super Spectra Coating, it also had a fluorite coating on some of its elements, which is now commonplace, but was revolutionary at the time - so much so that it was included in the name of optics. Compared to its successor, we can find many differences. The Fluorite version (manufactured since 1975), has only one built-in hood, while the L successor (launched in 1981), has a built-in and an attachable hood. Fluorite is "only" 1.9kg, L is 2.4kg, both are acceptable in hand (the predecessor contains 6 lenses in 5 groups and the successor 9 lenses in 7 groups). Both can be filtered at the back (after the last lens element). The Fluorite's stand is removable and clampable, while the L version already has a fixed connection (and the optics can be rotated freely in 4 positions, with click-in button fix). The biggest advantage of the L version compared to its predecessor is that the focus is IF, so the focus ring can be easily handled with one finger due to the internal focusing block, and the total length of the lens does not change, the weight moved during focusing is minimal. Fluorite, on the other hand, moves the entire optical block, the length of the lens changing, the mass moved is large, and unfortunately the mechanical parts also tend to wear out. On the L version, the end position (infinity) of the focus scale can be freely selected and fixed. What they have in common, however, is that they are both amazingly good in image quality (the L version is still the benchmark for fast 2.8 tele lenses), and they are both compatible with the full FD system and the 2x-A and 1.4x-A extenders.
