I don’t usually address the parts of this fandom that have consistently spoken so negatively about this TV couple. I’d rather focus on the positive that we get to celebrate in actuality. And I promise returning to being positive and unbothered is what I’ll do after this post, that who knows if anyone will read and who knows if I’ll keep posted for long. But there’s been a lot of degrading comments that go beyond just “opinion” or fair discussion lately so…I just had to respectfully vent. And it ain’t brief. Cuz if this blog has shown anything it’s that - Brief? I don’t know her lol.

Here’s the thing I’d want to say kindly to those that “just don’t buy Richonne” and go out of their way to be negative about the TV couple - You don’t have to like the pairing. Truly you don’t. You don’t have to see the (blazingly blatant) chemistry. Just know, you not seeing it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

And the issue isn't about you not being a fan of a TV couple or even voicing that Richonne isn't your thing. The real issue is whenever you spend time in your real life demeaning the pairing online with real-life implications of real-life racism and hatefulness.

Look, I hadn’t been expecting Rick and Michonne to get together romantically before they went canon. It wasn’t cuz I thought they didn’t have chemistry and it def wasn’t cuz I thought they were like siblings. (Ain’t nobody should be looking at their sibling the way they looked at each other lol.) Upon first watch, I just loved R&M’s dynamic and thought the bond and family they found with each other was really sweet and special and I had left it at that.

But when they got together romantically it immediately felt so right. It felt earned. It felt alive, authentic, utterly fitting, and beautiful.

And then shortly after when I went back and watched compilations of their pre-canon moments, I realized why it felt that way. It’s because it was all always right there. All that build-up was evident. All the desire. All the love. I wasn’t only seeing the pre-canon looks they shared and the attraction they felt because I now knew they’d be a couple. I was seeing it because that’s simply what it was. What it always was. Like from a media literacy standpoint, a romance is where Rick and Michonne's story was heading. It was me that missed it. And it would be weird for me to act like their love story wasn’t there just because I initially missed it. That’s on me.

How you feel about their love story doesn’t mean it wasn’t there. It doesn't mean their journey wasn’t well done. Some people just miss it because it wasn't heavy-handed and others just refuse to see it and we know why.

And if it’s just a silly TV show to you and you’re adamant that you don’t care about the couple or about anything, then do yourself and everyone a favor and don’t comment. Cuz people who actually don’t care and think it’s just a TV show aren’t taking any time out of their day to comment negatively about something that was made to be enjoyed. If you enjoy the couple, great. Revel in all their glory. If you don’t - ask yourself why it would at all be necessary to talk down on the pairing so harshly unless their union does bother you more than you care to admit and for reasons you refuse to say aloud. (But trust, the reasons behind why you spew vitriol toward the pairing are still so loud)

Whether you buy it or not, Richonne factually didn’t come out of nowhere. Their love isn’t an afterthought. It’s a patient and passionate slow-burn that wonderfully unfolded into an out-loud soulmate type of love from both of them equally. You don’t have to see it or like it. That’s okay. (Even tho I do feel pretty confident if you close your eyes and imagine Michonne looking like Lori or Jessie or even Andrea I think all of a sudden you’d read their scenes as more than platonic) But nothing will change that an epic love story is what Rick and Michonne’s journey literally is. Not just to “shippers,” but to people who receive actual paychecks as part of the show. Everyone involved with that show knows and values that Rick and Michonne have a grand love story. And the fact that a whole spinoff about their love story is on the way is proof that Rick and Michonne's love wasn’t just a part of TWD it was one of the elements at the very heart of TWD. Why keep fighting to survive if not for the love and family you build in that world?

9 seasons of watching Rick Grimes and they’re ending the main character’s arc with an epic love story between him and the greatest love of his life for a reason. Because no matter who likes or dislikes it, sees the chemistry, or doesn’t - regardless of it all, the characters of Rick and Michonne deeply love each other, need each other, and desire each other. And they have for a long long time. Fans of them are not reveling in an opinion or speculation that R&M’s story is a romance. We’re appreciating the story that was and is literally being told.

Their love story is fiction. Their love story is also a fact and no opinion changes that. And anyone who is willing to just step back, turn off biases, and watch what is literally happening on screen - in the words of Michonne��you’ll see :)

Oh and if you don’t - you don’t. No sweat. Like what you like. Dislike what you dislike. Just keep it respectful and know that the opinion you’re entitled to doesn’t change the facts. So back to reality & positivity, I go. 😌

MacCready flirts with her and she’s like lol no ur a child. She maybe flirts with a drifter or two who ends up being Deacon anyway 😏 but she’s mostly his old lady n no one else’s lol

Just differing on the relationship aspects because I don’t want them to only be platonic. That is already canon. And canon-TG is truly amazing as it was.

And the fact that KGY eschewed relationships because she thought she would be bad at it? Traumatized by her past? No… my mission in my head canon is to make her have the best relationships ever. With the people who know her, and her them. For her to be worshipped, to be loved passionately, to be treated as a treasure etc.

That said, I get why some would not want any ‘romance’ for them. To each their own.

I love reading the platonic/friendship fanfics too. Wish there are more of them. Or the OT3 ones. Or even just a Kang Gil Young-centric one. 😪

Though am very happy with each story under the tag (even if I don’t read many of them due to reasons, but they all sound amazing, and it is always nice other people get to have their preferences/kinks catered to).

(Some of the awesome female characters I love are relegated to be loftily single in canon already, so just no, sorry. Not ‘my’ Kang Gil Young. I want her to be loved. Platonically, familial, sexually and romantically etc. I want her to be able to have all kinds of love, in all its beauty and grace. She should have it all. And she shall. Am a shipper at heart even if I don’t care all that much for conventional romance).

Here TG also had a very clear bias towards M/M, which is something which raised my hackles, I would admit. Here, we have an amazing female lead and the potential for so much equality in the relationships she could have with the men in her life, and well, let’s just make her ‘aroace’. (People love labels, huh?) Let her continue to take care of the other two men platonically while letting them love each other - CY and YHP - in all possible ways. But let the female character - a well written, performed and all around gorgeous FC - just be her single self. 🙄 Sure, everyone should ship whatever rock their boats - just like I always do - but I really resent the obvious ‘erasure’ of the FC in too many instances, honestly.

(Edit: Post BE in Dec 2022, this sentiment unfortunately only grow stronger. Yoo Jae Yi is another amazing female character - even if only supporting - and we even got hints of something in canon, yet, still nothing. All those talk about her being queer did not result in much stories either. If only. 🙄)

Good to learn that this is also fandom dependent. Just unfortunate for me that TG is such a tiny fandom it is impossible to ignore, unlike other fandoms I lurk in too). anyway, Gil Young is one of the best female characters written EVER. she's second to none in my opinion. she's up there with Yoo Jae Yi, Oh Jin Joo, and Kang Eun Ho for me!!! i love Gil Young so much!!!

i love that she is indispensable to the storyline bcs of who she is as a character and not just bcs of what happened in the past. she's a detective that kick ass and protects them physically and she's the one with the skill and resources to get shits done. it's so nice to see the female character be the one with the higher ground tbh

like, yeah Hwa Pyung is the one that creates the story but it's Gil Young who facilitates the progression of the story. her existence has a point.

and isn't it refreshing to see feminity and masculinity "reverse" in this drama?? like, the one providing physically protection is Gil Young while Hwa Pyung ane Choi Yeon provides emotional and mental stability.

isn't it wonderful to see a female character who not only proudly exhibits her masculine traits but proudly embraces them?? a woman who is a leader and basically the alpha of their pack... the one who provides (she buys them food, she drives them around, she leads their investigations, she us the 'logical' center of their dynamic, she takes action and is more than willing to get down and dirty, SHE!!!) but also, her feminine energy is unmatched! she is kind and caring and emotional and she doesn't represses it at all. she's straight forward with her anger and her pride, she still has some 'playfulness' in her even though she's severe, and she doles out her concerns and worries as much as her disdain and doubts. again, SHE!!!

and isn't it beautiful to see men who are emotional and actually express their feelings?? men who understands the intricacies of mental and emotional roadblocks? men who are preoccupied with the internal struggle and understand the complexity of the internal self? men who actually communicate their thoughts and concerns with each other?

Hwa Pyung pushing for emotional bonding and investment for the trio... constantly reminding Gil Young of the softer, more human sides of things. meanwhile, Choi Yoon is the one explaining Hwa Pyung's background and emotional attachment to Seo Yoon to Gil Young.

the boys are the emotional side of things compared to Gil Young's more rigid and grounded side of the coin.

also, im not just talking about Hwa Pyung and Choi Yoon overt protection and communication with each other, im also referring to Hwa Pyung's relationship with Yukgwang and Gil Young's relationship with Bong Sang. these two men are so in touch with their feelings and explicit about their concern.

i think it's so fckn beautiful and powerful of them tbh and i love this trio more than any other because they have both feminine and masculine traits and that's sth i like to see more representation of

GOOD SHIT!!! he didn't really snap out of it when Gil Young reminded him of his desire to avenge his mom but his desire to keep Choi Yoon alive??? ffkn poetic. that's who Hwa Pyung is... filled with love and positivity, everything that Sohn is not.

and Choi Yoon. oh Choi Yoon. he's my fav bcs he suffers so so beautifully and tragically and you know i loveeeee people who suffers poetically. love how he tries to suppress his pain and turmoil but always ends up wearing his heart on his sleeves; whether it's his guilt or doubt or love and care for his friends. he's so emotionally expressive when it comes to the sadder side of things and i love that.

im 3000% sure that in post canon, she's in a queer platonic relationship with Hwa Pyung and Choi Yoon. QPR only bcs it's not exactly conventional for a woman to live with a man (in this case, two). anyway, she's their "bIg SiStEr" who will cuddle them to sleep and hold their hands and kisse their forehead. she is the big spoon, i take no criticism.

also, the three of them are basically Ghostbuster detectives who live together and detective Koh has to go and bail their asses outta jail every two weeks. he also brings them homecook braised pork every now and then bcs he can't help but mother then.
