rj's big sappy 2022 recap

when i started this dumb little blog, on july 9th, i was midway through writing an unambiguous love and rife with other ideas for more fics that i finally decided to bite the bullet and start writing. i'd been out of the fanfic writing game for a long time, and as a day 1 stranger things fan i knew how big the fandom already was, even before s4 came out in its entirety. but i was inspired to Just Start Writing Anyway. not to worry about notes, because yeah, it's oversaturated as all hell, but that means if numbers don't do well, there's an excuse, right? and i can just enjoy writing and posting and seeing what sticks.

but now here we are, nearly half a year later, with over 1.5k of you (!!!!!!!) and i am rejuvenated, i am inspired and i have never felt more love. so i'm gonna get real sappy and share that love with you all.

first and foremost, to the og's, @denim-mixtapes + @fanatictypist, i can't say anything more to you that i haven't already in the last nine years, other than thank you for reigniting the flame under my ass to get me here again. i love you both eternally.

to the other half of my brain, my platonic soulmate, @keerysquinn, i still cannot believe we had matching urls saved. i love us so much. thank you for being my muse, constantly inspiring and encouraging me, and making me feel less alone in this insane expanse of a fandom. thank you for always being my number 1 hype person, and being the best sister wife (gn) to our beloved scrunkly.

and on that note, to @bowerquinn and @hellfirehoe; the immediate friendship, guidance and support you both showed me from the moment i first started talking to you both is something truly special. i have never felt more welcome in a community than the way you made me feel from the moment we "met", and never more loved than through the absolute ferocity with which you guys have my back. i love the three of you immensely. slut squad 4 lyf <3

after having been in the [redacted] fandom for so long, i'd really lost touch in what i used to love the most about fandom, and on the surface there's so much flack that gets thrown around for what is and isn't "canon", what's "true" and what isn't, and so i had given up on my old love of crackshipping until anna and @heroeddiemunson once again reinvigorated new ways to interpret my favourite media since, i wanna say my old glee days?? i forgot how fun it is to just take two characters and explore their dynamics with little to no canon context. and that's had my creative juices flowing consistently for months now. i just have so much fun thinking about these things, and sharing them with people who get it, it truly never gets old.

speaking of bouncing ideas back and forth, i can't talk about the shit that's changed my life this year and not talk about busy streets and busy lives. while i've had stranger things-related fics that have reached insane numbers, and i am so very grateful for that, the small and mighty community that bsbl has formed is something i hold very close to my heart. i never thought i had it in me to write a longform story. to write believable angst, or slow burn, or even original characters that people would care about. that's why i've always only ever written fanfic. but the comments i get from bsbl chapters truly make me believe that i'm capable of far more than i'd thought before i started it. thank you for loving it as much as i do. <3

(also, while i do sincerely love and appreciate every sort of commentary on it, i do have to give an extra special dose of love to @reysorigins because their reviews on @reysorigins-library are, honest to whatever's out there, some of the most genuinely sincere ones to receive. seeing your own words recited back to you, singled out to praise them, is validating and inspiring in ways i can't put into words. thank you for what you do, rey <3)

it was never even meant to be the insanity that it now is. it started off as a dumb oneshot idea that i had no idea what direction it was headed in. then an inside joke in the jq server inspired me, and many others, to start bouncing more and more ideas about what ralph would be like in the modern world, and so a fic was born. a fic that's only 6 chapters deep so far and already 52k+ words. that's a whole novel!!! i daren't tag everyone who's contributed to bsbl bc a) it'd take so much searching back through multiple channels to make sure i included absolutely everyone, and i'd feel terrible if i missed anyone out; and b) if you're there for that, you're here anyway lol. so to everyone in the jq server, thank you for giving me the gift of the story that never stops giving back.

there are so many other friends i've made through the camaraderie of the writing community. again, at first it seemed oversaturated, like i was going to be just a drop in the ocean. but actually, that's not the case. it just means there's always going to be people who are willing to listen to your headcanons and hype them up with you. it's given me the confidence to - and i can't word this in any other way but i promise it isn't self-deprecating - just be really fucking annoying about the things that i enjoy. i've managed to find a corner of the internet that loves the things that i love as much as i do and in as big a way as i do.

and the inspiration i get from new friends goes even beyond writing! i've even been inspired to start learning how to make gifs now?? and not just compiling frames and putting them together, i'm learning all about colouring and rendering and blending scenes together. i've never been very visually creative, but i have so much to learn and i'm so excited to.

it's my 2023 goal to try and be more of an active friend to my mutuals. but i'm bad at reaching out lol. i would tag all of the mutuals i want to get to know better for accountability's sake but a) again i may forget people and feel real bad about it, and b) i don't want to annoy anyone with unwanted pings. but if we're moots, i am always down to talk more!!

2022 was always going to be a big year for me anyway. a couple of weeks ago, i celebrated a decade of my "second" life. but i've done other big things this year, too. i've been learning welsh and getting in touch with my own heritage. i've started to get over my fear of learning to drive. i applied for a promotion at work, didn't get it, but most importantly, i didn't let it get me down. it's just motivated me to get to somewhere better, where the talents i KNOW i have can actually be appreciated. if you'd have told me from ten years ago that, i'd have decked you lmao.

i couldn't have imagined at the start of the year that i'd pick up the one creative hobby i thought i was fully burned out from. but here we are. thank you for the last half-year-ish. whether you've been here for five months or five minutes, i appreciate your presence regardless. <3

listen, i know it sucks when something you ship is "sister-zoned", but the real bright side and the reality of it all, like i've said before: what danielle says doesn't matter. that's her opinion. that's it. it holds no weight on the narrative. i'm sure the writers take what she wants in consideration but in the chance that the writers have thought about hizzie in a romantic context, they're not gonna let her saying "sister-like dynamic" stop them. let me remind you, if it makes you feel any better, that drr has referred to BOTH twins as having a sisterly dynamic with hope.

let me tell you a story. i've been in fandom for more than a decade. i was in fandom when glee was airing. my prev. url was quinntanas. quinn and santana, by no means, were a canon relationship when i acquired that url, and glee fans were, in EVERY sense of the word, more mean, and more vile than hosies ever could be. maybe its just me having thick skin or being in fandom for a long time, but everything they say is so contextually easy to roll your eyes at. but the glee fandom? man. the fights were brutal. in the end it always came down to who you shipped quinn and/or santana with. so it was constantly faberry vs. quinntana, or brittana vs. quinntana, or god forbid if you shipped the niche pezberry. and i was a huge quinntana fan, constantly seeing fans of their dynamic being put down by people who shipped "canon ships" (including people who shipped santana x men which i thought was gross in it's own right), but hey, you wanna know what's uplifting about this story? quinntana hooked up. and yeah sure it was a one night stand, but it happened. in the most unexpected of ways. it HAPPENED. and if quinntana happened in the grand-ole days of 2012, hizzie has a bigger chance of happening a decade later on more openly queer television.

don't let any of that shit bring you down. your fandom experience and your fandom ships are yours. what the actors think or say doesn't matter, what other fans have to say doesn't matter. its your queer experience. i promise you its all fine.

- ok so introduction time!! hi my name is vic, 22, proud latina and hispanic social worker in the behavioral health field which can occupy my time but i can also be found at lizzei, graveg1rl and sl4shed.

portrayal

- i do explore sam suffering from psychosis which was triggered by her long term heavy and active drug use as a teenager. when the truth was revealed regarding her biological father being billy loomis, it triggered a heavy amount of trauma which started the hallucinations during her teen years and having those conversations. sam knows they are hallucinations and that she is talking to him only but her brain won't shut them off until she acknowledges it. at first they weren't active but overtime, especially as the kills started approaching again, they were coming more and more apparent. she does take quetiapine to help with the hallucinations but the dosage amount had stopped working as time progressed.

- sam does have the fear of turning out like her billy because of the visual and auditory hallucinations she experiences; billy trying to convince her to behave the same way he did but sam knows she is not him. she, at the end of the day, is responsible for herself and her actions.

- moral of story with the first two bullets : you cannot separate her mental health from her character but simutaneously do not associate condemn mental health with biological psychotic serial killer behavior aka don't assume sam will be a serial killer just because her bio dad was.

- ghostface to her was a sick joke that sam didn't take seriously until tara. she felt like it was her fault for not being there and it's something sam struggles forgiving herself for.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

There are so many people I’ve met on this site, so many friends I’ve made. I joined tumblr only a few months ago, but my life has already drastically improved. I smile more and laugh more and I feel happier all the time, knowing that you all are just a click away. I’ve often heard people refer to tumblr as a hellsite, but I don’t fully agree with that. True, some things on here are crazy, but more than that, I’ve found people like me. I’ve found people who understand me, who think like me and feel like I do. Ya know, before I joined tumblr, I had never met another bisexual person(crazy, right?). Y’all have made life more enjoyable and happier and brighter, and for that, I’ll never be able to thank you enough.

I have soooo many people I have to thank, so I’ll try to keep the list of people as short as possible: all my closest friends and all the people who have been amazing and I have loved seeing since I joined tumblr earlier this year <33

I don’t know if I can do justice to just how much you’ve helped me. Words... words have never been my strong suit. I love writing because I can weave stories together, piece together words I like to form sentences, and use those sentences to form narratives. Writing has always been easier for me than talking.... because in writing, I don’t have to worry what others will think, or how others will perceive me. Personality:

Willow’s personality has been described on more than one occasion as that of a feral cat. Her generally disheveled appearance and awkward nature set her apart from her classmates, and her misunderstanding of social cues often leave them feeling uncomfortable. Her general distrust towards new people doesn’t help the situation. Due to her upbringing, Willow is fairly socially stunted, looking to her friends for social cues and mimicking their actions. She’s often found repeating dialogue from movies and TV and relating situations to often the same few movies or television shows, as these are her greatest frame of reference for how “the real world” plays out.

Willow is often found awake at all hours of the night, usually because she struggles to sleep, and is constantly hoping someone will be up to hang out with her, though she would never ask. She’s often found sleeping during the day, when others are around and when she feels safer.

Once Willow warms up to someone, she’s more bubbly and talkative, still awkward, but in a slightly more endearing way. She’s eager to lend a helping hand, spontaneous, and full of energy (many have tried to cut her off from caffeine and failed) until she hits a crash and ends up passed out in some odd spot. Thoughtful and encouraging, Willow also cares deeply for her friends and her love language is easily acts of service.

Willow clashes with authority often, usually only trusting an authority figure, like Natasha, with time (and food. she’s really motivated by food). Once she finds an adult she can trust, she latches onto them for guidance and is eager to please them (re: Jessica Jones, Natasha Romanoff, Detective Bennett).

In dire situations, Willow is a wildcard, often falling back on her more feral nature (she’s well known for biting in fights). Her stubbornness and naivety often lands her in situations where she ends up in over her head, and she often prioritizes a victory over her own wellbeing.

More than anything, Willow hopes for some semblance of a normal life despite her circumstances and relishes in doing “normal people things”. She also hopes to prevent the types of experiments she went though, and fights to protect the rights of other enhanced individuals, as well as their autonomy.

Biography:

Willow Wren (formerly Nikita “Nina” McFly) was born on premature on October 10, 2002, at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Born wrapped in her then-tiny batwings, her birth was an oddity, and kept hushed among the staff of the medical center. Her mother was Antonia Farago, a young woman who worked as a custodian for SHIELD and died shortly after Willow’s birth. Her father, Vasyl Zakharov, a former first responder at Chernobyl, was out of the picture and passed away only a few years later due to cancer.

Willow spent the first few weeks of her life in the NICU before the Panoptes Foundation caught wind of the mutant baby and attempted to apprehend her. This attempt was thwarted by the quick-thinking of the staff, who passed Willow off to a medical student. Willow was dropped off at the fire station downtown, and later taken in by firefighter Jackson McFly and his partner David, a graduate student at the University of Vermont. The couple named her Nikita, after the Elton John song, and nicknamed her Nina.

For the first few years of her life, Willow was brought up by the McFlys who found her and hid her from prying government agencies, though she was eventually located and taken by The Panoptes Foundation. Her abilities narrowly saved her from execution, the fate suffered by other taken kids. Willow was brought to the Clinic, a research site where the Foundation studied those with abilities, hoping to identify how to find and eliminate mutants. The Clinic also collected data for HYDRA, who sponsored the Foundation under the direction of Daniel Whitehall.

At the Clinic, Willow met two other children (Dew and Fanisimo) born with strange abilities or traits. The Lab Rats (as they eventually called themselves) were kept under the Foundation’s control through the Faustus Method. As Willow’s abilities further developed, she was eventually brainwashed as a weapon to be deployed. The Clinic was led by Doctor Dawn Turner, whom Willow grew to despise, and who “put down” mutants when the Clinic’s research on them was finished.

At some point in late 2014, Willow found that HYDRA would be taking custody of her permanently, despite the wishes of the Foundation, and sending her to Hydra Laboratories in Dover, Delaware.

Willow escaped the Clinic in November of 2014, and fled to New York City, where she received assistance from a homeless woman who put her into contact with Jeffrey Fields, an underground advocate for people with abilities. Willow met Jessica Jones during the Kilgrave fiasco, and later helped out around the detective agency after school. She also became friends with Peter Parker and Ned Leeds that year in the eighth grade, along with paranormal fanatic Kate Gray, and the son of Jeffrey Fields, Marty Fields.

Though she had no memory of her past before escaping, Willow’s encounter with Kilgrave began unlocking some buried memories, eventually leading to the realization that she had been experimented on and brainwashed. Her summer of 2015 was spent investigating her past back with The Panoptes Foundation, eventually meeting up with another the Lab Rats at the old Clinic, which had been abandoned in the past year. In the fall of 2015, Willow began tracking down old HYDRA associates and doxxing them, though Willow began to take it a little too far, putting her on the radar of SHIELD and eventually the Avengers.

A case of mistaken identity also led Willow to accidentally target Werner von Strucker, son of Wolfgang von Strucker. During this incident, Willow was stabbed by Grant Ward, and put back onto HYDRA’s radar as well.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Willow, her now-best-friend Marty was also investigating HYDRA for her, realizing the connection between it and The Panoptes Foundation, which led to his murder in December of 2015. Willow became homeless shortly after this and cut off communication with many of her old friends, continuing to go to school but finding and eventually killing old Panoptes associates by night.

She was eventually tracked down by SHIELD and confronted at school. Barely managing to escape, Willow set herself on a final mission to find Doctor Dawn Turner. This led to her capture by The Panoptes Foundation, but not before tipping off SHIELD to the location of the base. After being held by The Panoptes Foundation, and by extension, HYDRA, for a week, she was broken out by SHIELD forces. She was given the option to stay in the custody of SHIELD, or into the custody of the Avengers, whom Phil Coulson and Daisy Johnson felt could better understand and contain her powers. Tests run by SHIELD confirmed their beliefs that she had been exposed to something similar to the Mind Stone, perhaps even in utero.

Willow chose to go with the Avengers and stayed with them through the spring of 2016, finishing her school year remotely, training, and becoming close friends with Wanda, as well as developing a mentorship relationship with Natasha. She also was given access to recently found documents about her past, giving her answers as to where she came from. In June of 2016, however, Willow sided with Captain America in the Avengers Civil War after sneaking out of the Avengers Compound to find out what the Winter Soldier’s reemergence had to do with HYDRA. She was imprisoned at the Raft before being broken out by Steve Rogers and was encouraged by the newly formed Secret Avengers to return to New York City and negotiate a deal with the government through SHIELD. Willow resolved to turn herself in, but not before traveling to reunite with her dads in Burlington, VT, and meeting her adopted siblings.

Back in New York City, Willow lived at the SHIELD Cocoon facility and returned to high school. In the fall of 2016, Willow also rekindled her friendship with Peter Parker and Ned Leeds, as well as made enemies with her old friend Kate. However, following Kate’s untimely Terragenesis, Kate’s friends reached out to Willow for help, and the girl helped Kate escape government surveillance and go into hiding.

In the winter of 2017, Marty’s father reconnected with Willow, asking for her help in further assisting those with abilities in the New York area, and helping a few escape the surveillance of SHIELD. This new responsibility puts her in constant conflict with the law and dangerously close to violating her terms of her freedom. Detective Bennett, who Willow had come to know after Marty’s murder, grew worried about her as the girl continued to show up to the precinct, and eventually offered to take the girl in.

Over time, Willow and Detective Bennett realized that Detective Bennett had also been a victim of the Panoptes Foundation as a teenager back in the 90s, and the two of them team up with Jeffrey Fields, Fanisimo, Dew, and Kate Gray to take down the Foundation once and for all.

After the attack on New York, Willow headed to the Avengers Compound, meeting up with the others before heading to Wakanda and participating in the Battle of Wakanda, getting gravely injured while trying to protect Wanda and Vision from Thanos. Though she survives and is left behind in the Snap, she suffers from long-term brain damage, which concerns Natasha, who she moves back in with after the Snap.

Willow was a participate in the Time Heist, going with the New York team, and was devastated when she returned and learned of Natasha’s death. She fought with the Avengers in the Battle of Earth, surviving to fight another day, though dealing with the consequences of the immense losses she suffered, and struggling to help her friends, Peter and Wanda, still alive after the war.

After the Battle of Earth, Willow sticks around with the Avengers for a few days before returning to live with Detective Bennett. However, something strange calls Willow to Westview, NJ, where she accidentally flies into the Hex. Willow appears in 1960s Westview, stripped of her powers and with no memory of her past. However, due to her previous experience with mind control, the illusion breaks down quicker for Willow and by the 90s, she’s moved in with the Wandavision household as Wanda tried to keep her in the new reality and quell Willow’s distress, though Willow eventually regains control and helps to fight off SWORD.

After the Battle of Westview, Willow stays in touch with Wanda, being her point of contact and stopping by weekly with groceries and news from the world outside Wanda’s cabin. Willow has continued her work in hiding mutants and Inhumans from government surveillance and does the same for Wanda. She often splits time between the city and her fathers’ home in Burlington.

In the fall of 2024, this work extends to helping Peter as well, who is grappling with the leak of his secret identity as Spider-Man. She puts him into contact with lawyer Matt Murdock and helps shield him from some of the press, but later loses contact with him when Strange’s spell erases Peter from the world’s memory. However this loss only lasts for a few months.

Willow regains her memories of Peter when Strange returns to her for help, asking Willow to give up the location of Wanda, Willow being one of the only people who knows it. Willow refuses, and only relents when Strange lets her remember Peter again, helping Willow understand the gravity of the situation involving the multiverse.
