Day 16 (on Day 18) post for @sachablackauthor 's AuthorLife Challenge: Fave Villain I am a huge fan of the Discworld books, and my favorite (so far) is Night Watch. It has a chase sequence at the beginning that is so well-paced and dramatic, I could see a movie of it in my head. Commander Sam Vimes faces off against Carcer Dun, a vexing criminal who's always two steps ahead of Vimes. When Sam finally pins him down, Carcer produces a third blade (Vimes thought he only had two) and slashes at his face. In that moment a magic-charged thunderbolt zaps them back into the past. Carcer does away with John Keel, the policeman who mentored young Sam. Older Sam has to impersonate John Keel and teach his younger self everything that Keel taught him, while also trying to catch Carcer and find a way back to his own time. It's a spectacular book. Well, I missed Face Friday, so this is #showoffsaturday ! We haven't seen our good friends @quirkinitup and @baldingbombshell in well over a year, maybe a year and a half. We had a great night shootin' the breeze as we discussed the merits and demerits of such cinematic masterpieces as Black Widow and Space Jam 2. Day 15 post for @sachablackauthor 's AuthorLife Challenge: Writing drinks and snacks I'm an absolute fangirl for ice-blended coffee drinks. 99% of the time they're some type of mocha. I don't know what it is, but slurping one down at the coffeehouse with my notebook open on the table will get me jump-started to write every time. Sometimes on a weekend day I'd go in to the Coffee Bean, get a small cup of regular coffee with about a gallon of half-and-half, and something like a chocolate muffin or a cinnamon roll. It's just as effective to get me writing as my afternoon ice blended routine. Day 10 post for @sachablackauthor 's AuthorLife Challenge: Essential author stationery. I wrote almost the entire second half of Mark of The Champion in humble wide-ruled composition books. I write thought dumps, dialogue passages, pre-plotting for action scenes, character sketches, whatever comes to mind. Oh, and I write the actual story in them too. I also give each comp book a name, so it's easier for me to remember what got written where. I use PaperMate InkJoy gel pens to write with, and I use *all* the colors. There's no actual color-coding or organization method, the color variety just helps to keep my mind fresh and invigorated while I write. Day 7 post for @sachablackauthor 's AuthorLife Challenge: What is your writing process? I'm a hardcore plantser. By that I mean I'll do some rough outlines of characters, scenes, dialogue, action, etc., but I don't let those dictate everything I write. I find out what happens next by asking a lot of questions on paper, letting them sit in my noodle for a while, then writing out the answers as they come to me. I have started incorporating the 'what if' method of idea generation, and it's been working well. Asking the "who's, why's and what-if's" and letting the answers arrive was how I wrote the entire second half of Mark of The Champion. (I'd pantsed the first half waaaay back in 2007, in the days before indie publishing took off and authortube was a thing.) Day 6 post for @sachablackauthor 's AuthorLife Challenge, Day 6: Where do you write? The one activity I really missed during 2020 was writing in a coffeehouse. While completing my first draft of Mark of The Champion, I was most productive when I had a comfortable chair, a sturdy table, an amazing beverage that was 50% coffee, 50% chocolate, and 99% sugar, and 'coffeehouse lite rock' floating from the speakers. I'm still a bit skittish about returning to my local Coffee Bean - I'll probably go back once most or all of the Covid variants are under control. As promised, here is my Day 3 post (on Day 5) for @sachablackauthor 's AuthorLife Challenge! Day Three: What books inspired you to write? The book that impacted me the most when I was in grade school was "The Mountain of Truth," by Dale Carlson, published in 1972. Two brothers from a well-to-do family go to a summer camp in Tibet. The older brother, Michael, disappears for three days, then returns to lead a group of campers to a lamasery, to unlock their latent telepathic and telekinetic abilities to help humanity. His younger brother Peter joins them, but soon discovers he does not have the powers his companions have. I really related to Peter, because I knew how it felt to not be the special one. It's a heartbreaking yet hopeful book that has a place of honor on my shelf. #TSSChallenge Day 3: OTP - Fave Couple My favorite fictional couple is Sam Vimes and Lady Sybil Ramkin from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. In "Guards! Guards!" City Watch Captain Samuel Vimes isn't feeling the best about himself or his life. While on a fact-finding mission to learn about dragons, he meets Sybil, a member of nobility who is friendly, charming and down-to-earth, despite being at least a foot taller than him. Sybil can see the good man behind the gruff exterior and thinks of Sam as a gallant hero. They were made for each other. So, I've been falling behind on my writing and life goals for months due to several stressors. My bullet journal went from being a planner to just a work project log. After seeing good results from friends in the writing group I'm in, I bit the bullet and ordered a Clever Fox Undated Daily Planner in peach-pink. I opted for this over the Ultimate Achiever's planner because I still need a daily job log and I appreciate the weekly notes pages and the blank dotted pages in the back. This baby is thicker and heavier than my STM, and will def become heavier still with all the stickers I'll be putting in it! 😂 The thing I'm looking forward to most is clarifying my goals and staying focused on them.
