Unlock the Secrets: A Comprehensive Guide to Cultivating Delicious Berries
Harvesting and savoring homegrown berries in your own garden is one of the greatest joys of gardening. Whether you choose to grow strawberries, blackberries, raspberries or a variety of other berries, you will be delighted with the bounty in both flavor and nutrition. In this article, we will look at the basics of how to grow berries in your garden, from selection and planting to successful harvests every year. With just a bit of knowledge and the right growing conditions, you can enjoy the abundance of berries grown in your own garden for many years to come.
How to Grow Berries: A Delicious Journey
Picture this: a sunny morning, a quiet garden, and the sweet aroma of freshly picked berries tickling your senses. Growing your own berries can turn this dreamy scene into a reality. As someone who has embarked on this fruity journey, I'm thrilled to share my wisdom and experiences with you. So, let's dig in and discover the secrets to cultivating a bountiful berry harvest.
1. Choose the Perfect Spot
When it comes to berry bushes, location is key. Find a spot in your garden that receives ample sunlight, ideally six to eight hours a day. Make sure the soil is well-drained and rich in organic matter to give your berries a healthy foundation to thrive.
2. Select the Right Varieties
With so many berry varieties to choose from, it can be overwhelming. Consider your climate and the space available when making your selection. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are all popular choices, each with its own unique flavor and growing requirements.
3. Prepare the Soil
Before planting your berry bushes, it's crucial to prepare the soil properly. Remove any weeds or grass, and then dig a hole that's deep and wide enough to accommodate the plant's roots. Incorporating compost or well-rotted manure will give your berries the nutrients they need to flourish.
4. Planting and Pruning
When it's time to plant your berries, gently remove them from their containers and place them in the prepared holes. Be sure to space them apart according to the specific variety's requirements. Prune any damaged or crossing stems to promote healthy growth and encourage an abundant harvest.
5. Water and Mulch
Watering your berry plants regularly is essential, especially during dry spells. Mulching around the base of the plants helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain an even soil temperature. Apply a generous layer of organic mulch, such as straw or wood chips, but avoid piling it against the stems to prevent rotting.
6. Protection from Pests
As much as we adore our berries, pests do too. To protect your precious crop, install bird netting or use scare tactics like reflective tape or wind chimes to deter hungry birds. If slugs and snails make an appearance, consider using natural deterrents or handpick them to keep your berries intact.
7. Harvest with Joy
There's something magical about plucking a ripe berry from its plant and savoring its juicy sweetness. It's a reward well worth the effort.
When your berries reach their peak of ripeness, gently pluck them from the plants with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Taste the fruits of your labor and let their flavors dance on your taste buds, rewarding you for your hard work and patience.
8. Share the Berry Love
Remember, sharing is caring. Once your berry bushes start producing an abundance of fruit, share the love with friends, family, and neighbors. Spread the joy of homegrown berries, creating a community of berry enthusiasts who can relish in the delights of nature's candy.
Now that you have the knowledge and guidance needed to embark on your own berry growing adventure, it's time to get your hands dirty and start planting. Trust me, the journey from seed to ripe berry is a rewarding experience that will leave you craving for more. Happy berry growing!

Hollywood: Daytime Goes to the Beach Aaron Spelling will bring sunshine and sand to set-bound soap operas with his new ‘Sunset Beach’
Nov 4, 1996 By Betsy Sharke Except for a nasty cold, Aaron Spelling couldn’t be in much better spirits. He’s spent most of the day with his office crammed full of wardrobe racks and cast members from Sunset Beach, the first daytime drama that Spelling Entertainment has ever done and the first daytime drama to be introduced on network TV in eight years (1989’s Generations was the last — and it didn’t).
‘We brought in 12 racks of clothes,’ says Spelling. ‘I think fashion is as important to a serial as anything else.’ Fashion sets the tone. It defines the palette. The length of a skirt, the style of jeans, can tell the viewer volumes about a character before the first word of dialogue is spoken. Spelling already loves the Sunset Beach cast — their names have been added to his annual Christmas party list — and on this day he is doling out advice to them on everything from buying a new car to renting apartments to how to handle fame, should it be lucky enough to come. He has issued his no-hair-changes dictum — Sunset cast members had better be happy with the style and color they start the show with, because Spelling isn’t about to let them confuse a new audience with a makeover any time soon. It is a long-standing rule for a Spelling show, and his staff knows that he’s deadly serious about it even if some of the awestruck actors don’t — yet. On Jan. 6, Sunset Beach will hit the air. ‘The series is a critical component of NBC West Coast president Don Ohlmeyer’s plan to make the network’s daytime schedule as potent as its prime time. NBC is in third place in daytime, though the net is up 20 percent this season and is closing in on second-place ABC. Ohlmeyer has his sights set on first, which CBS now owns. ‘With Sunset, we have something new and hot and exciting,’ Ohlmeyer says. ‘(In) the ‘80s, NBC daytime basically disintegrated. We are in the process of rebuilding, but we have to deliver the goods. That’s how we’ve built prime time, with distinctive programming. ‘There hasn’t been a successful soap launched in 10 years. It’s very difficult to do, but with Aaron’s touch and looking at the cast we have, we think it’s worth the effort. Some of our affiliates are very receptive (to the show) some, we’re in the process of kidnapping their children.’ On Stage 11 at NBC Studios in Burbank, carpenters and set designers are working late into the night to complete the sets that will form the primary backdrop for the show. The small community of Seal Beach, roughly a 90-minute drive south of Los Angeles, has been scouted nearly grain by grain of sand. It will be the exterior home for Sunset, and unlike most daytime soaps, the location will be a frequent player. Last week, readings and the first of three weeks of shooting exteriors began. The Santa Anas — California’s devil winds — stirred up the sand, making it sting on the skin. The water, which is never warm at Seal Beach, was even colder than usual. But no one was complaining. The 22 actors who will give shape and form to Sunset Beach are a beautiful bunch indeed, a canvas of racial diversity plucked from the talent pool in New York, Los Angeles and other cities including Philadelphia, the hometown of Spelling Entertainment president Jonathan Levin, who went back for that casting session. They are also young faces, part of the strategy to make Sunset a daytime soap for younger viewers, to do for daytime drama what Ricki Lake did for talk, at least in terms of attracting a new audience. Spelling is considered a master at casting, instinctively knowing which faces will work together as a couple, which actors will have that all-important element of chemistry. Now the virtually unknown Sunsetters are all in front of him, many meeting for the first time, and the air is electric. ‘One of my favorite sports is finding new people and combining them with other people, and I had used so many people from daytime on our soaps,’ says Spelling, whose legacy includes such prime-time legends as Loveboat and Dynasty. The company is currently on prime time with an unprecedented four dramas: Melrose Place; Beverly Hills, 90210; Savannah; and Seventh Heaven. Sunset has been 18 months in the making, and Spelling is like a proud papa, surrounded by actors whose future he has just secured. The series, which is co-owned by Spelling and NBC, has a one-year commitment from the network. That’s 51 weeks of shows, 255 hour-long episodes guaranteed. ‘I wouldn’t tell Candy, my wife, for a week after the show was sold, but my daughter Tori is a daytime addict, and she kept saying, ‘Do it,” says Spelling. With four shows already on the air, he has little time. Launching a daytime soap would siphon off even more of it. ‘I don’t think it hit me for a while. OnMelrose, we wrap on the 22nd of November and don’t come back until January 5th. The actors and writers get a chance to rest. This is never-ending. But it’s been a strange, great experience.’ Worldvision, which sells Spelling’s shows internationally, already has 10 countries signed on for Sunsetwithout one scene shot, based on a four-minute video that outlined the premise of the show and included Spelling talking about it. The foreign sales are important, as is NBC’s share in the financing. Mounting a daytime drama from scratch is a massive undertaking. ‘It requires the logistics of mounting a military campaign,’ says Levin. ‘There’s huge construction, there’s an enormous amount of lighting, tremendous casting, wardrobe problems. It’s not like prime time, when you see life in a kind of episodic way. Daytime is an endless stream of programming that, once it’s begun, can’t be stopped.’ Ohlmeyer puts the production investment alone at about $50 million. ‘Then there’s the cost of launch, advertising and promotion — it’s a major commitment on our part,’ he says. ‘With daytime, you’re not really going to know anything concretely for 18 months. I feel we’re very much on track. We’ve done this in a really organized way in terms of laying out target dates, scripts in by here, cast in place by here, task force working on clearances to this point we’re right on schedule. That still doesn’t change the pucker factor.’ NBC was initially looking at four ideas, Spelling’s idea among them, for a daytime soap. Spelling’s concept originally was loosely defined as ‘Melrose Place at the beach.’ When they began to look seriously for a title for the new show, Spelling ran a title contest in-house. The winner would get $200. There were dozens of suggestions, but the most serious contender, Never Say Goodbye, came from an unlikely source: Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone, who suggested it during a dinner with Spelling. ‘I loved the name — it says romance, which this show is all about,’ says Spelling, whose company is part of Viacom. But in testing, viewers were drawn to the ‘beach’ motif more than anything else, Spelling says. Executive producer Gary Tomlin (Santa Barbara) and Robert Guza Jr. are the people on the front line of the creative side of Sunset Beach. The initial groundwork on the series was done by Chuck Pratt, who was an executive producer on Melrose Place, and Guza, whose work everyone knew from Spelling’sModels Inc. Together they wrote a nearly 400-page bible outlining Sunset’s premise, characters and storyline. Spelling remembers the bible for Melrose Place being closer to 40 pages. Unlike most daytime dramas, which tend to build their storylines around families and family rivalries,Sunset Beach is about young singles and couples who have been drawn to the town, and the relationships that emerge as the action unfolds. The producers also created an underlying mythology about the town as a place where one can find true love. ‘We loved the idea of creating a town and making the town a character,’ says Guza, who is cocreator and head writer. ‘(With) Sunset Beach, you get to create this world and these characters, and then you get to screw up their lives.’ Sunset Beach is being written at a faster pace than traditional daytime dramas. It’s a delicate balancing act to move action through each episode without losing the audience. ‘We would love it if people watched five days a week, but they don’t,’ says Tomlin. Three days is more typical. ‘We have to make certain they’re able to pick up where the story left off and that it hasn’t moved so rapidly that they can’t figure it out.’ The show is also being designed to allow room for cameos by big-name prime-time stars. Spelling wants to give viewers as compelling a reason as possible to tune in to Sunset. ‘On top of needing to have a terrific show, you are fighting against viewer habits that are long, long ingrained,’ says Levin. ‘It is very difficult to change the loyalty of the daytime viewer, and we’re talking about shows that have been on for 30 years. That’s one of the reasons we’re targeting young viewers — they’re the most available and the most flexible in their viewing habits.’ Then there is the station lineup. Affiliates exert their independence far more in daytime than prime time. NBC says that Sunset is cleared on 85 percent of its affiliates; the network expects to reach 90 percent by the premiere. With the cast now in place and the first rolls of tapes being produced, the network knows that stations that are wavering at least will have something concrete to see. ‘Will we get sufficient coverage — that’s a constant battle,’ says Levin. ‘Will the local affiliates elect to air the show in desirable time slots that will afford us the best opportunity to be sampled? These are things we are lobbying for but ultimately we don’t control.’ Spelling and NBC executives hope that Sunset Beach will be scheduled to follow Days of Our Lives, which has made a dramatic turnaround. ‘Over the last 18 months with that show, it’s been unbelievable, going from being in the middle to the top,’ Ohlmeyer says. ‘If we can get that kind of performance from Another World — and we think we’re finally on the right track there — with Sunset Beach we could have a solid three-hour block.’ Copyright ASM Communications, Inc. What Does the Record-Setting $119.75M Sale of L.A.’s Famed Spelling Manor Mean?
realtor.com
The recent sale of the legendary, 56,500-square-foot megamansion formerly known as the Spelling Manor in Holmby Hills, CA, for $119.75 million was the priciest residential real estate deal in the history of Los Angeles County.
Which is saying an awful lot in an area where nine-digit listing prices have become the new normal for high-end real estate. There are currently seven homes in the county on the market priced over $100 million.
The 123-room, 14-bedroom, 27-bathroom chateau now simply known as The Manor is one of the largest single-family homes in the U.S., topping the White House by about 1,500 square feet. TV mogul Aaron Spelling built it for his wife, Candy, in 1991.
Candy Spelling put it on the market after Aaron’s death, and originally listed the massive mansion for $150 million. But Petra Ecclestone—daughter of Formula 1 mogul Bernie Ecclestone—snapped it up for $85 million cash in 2011.
The Manor

Petra Ecclestone has had the lavish estate—with luxuries including a nightclub, hair salon, massage spa, tanning room, bowling alley, wine cellar, championship tennis court, and parking for 100-plus cars—on and off the market for as much as $200 million starting in 2016.
The mansion was listed for $160 million when she decided to accept the nearly $120 million offer.
So is this recent record-breaking ultraluxury sale a fluke? Or does it mean billionaires are back and willing to shell out eye-popping amounts for SoCal luxury?
A flash or a trend?
“This is far from a fluke,” says Shawn Elliott, managing director of the ultraluxury division of Nest Seekers International. Elliott deals with the most prestigious properties in the country, with licenses in Florida, New York, and California. He is currently representing the Bruce Makowsky–designed mansion known as Billionaire, which is on the market for $150 million.
“There’s another sale in that range coming up soon, and with the stock market at all-time highs and interest rates at all-time lows, it’s a great time to be purchasing properties like these,” Elliott adds.

Wait a minute! Interest rates? We assumed billionaires plunked down cash and didn’t bother with the messy business of borrowing money.
“Sometimes they do, and sometimes they pay cash and then turn around and refinance,” says Elliott. “Or they take out a loan for a portion of the price.”
He notes that billionaires often have such tremendous assets they can put up against the loans, they can manage to get rates as low as, say, 2.5%. Which is much, much lower than the mortgage rates the other 99% of us will ever see.
Can $80 million be considered a bargain?
Santiago Arana, who deals in the ultraluxury market for The Agency, agrees it’s a swell time for luxury home sellers.
The Manor was “one of the best properties in L.A.,” Arana says, and now that it’s sold, it makes other luxury homes on the market with $40 million to $80 million price tags look like bargains.
Speaking of which, there are about 15 mansions on the market in Los Angeles County currently in that price range.
Not that today’s billionaires are exactly ready to dig through the bargain bin.
“L.A. is still a destination for the ultrawealthy,” he says, adding that high net worth buyers are more interested in location, size of lot, the views, and lifestyle—as opposed to saving a few million bucks on a closing price.

“These people are not like the rest of us,” he says. “They travel with an entourage. They have their chefs, drivers, personal assistants, household staffs, security staffs, but they still want their privacy.”
This makes sense as it relates to the gargantuan estate Ecclestone just sold. There’s no single family big enough to fill an estate like The Manor, but it takes a staff of 30 to run the place. Part of the massive 56,500-square-foot home is set aside to accommodate the folks who keep the place (and its owners) humming.
What does it take to catch a billionaire?
Billionaires aren’t accustomed to waiting. So it follows that the properties they purchase must be turnkey, according to Elliott.
“When you spend that much money, you don’t want to wait two or three months and be bothered with renovations, you want to move right in,” he says.
He noted Ecclestone had already put about $20 million into renovations.

Yawar Charlie, an agent with the Aaron Kirman Group at Compass and soon to be on CNBC’s “Listing Impossible,” says that the status conferred with the purchase of a trophy home is also a potent factor.
“When people are spending $80 million or more on a home, it needs to be a marquee home,” he says. “There has to be a bit of cachet with it, either the location, designer, or previous owner.
“Also, having the highest sale in a particular neighborhood, such as this $120 million home, gives the owner a certain level of brand recognition,” he continues
Big Apple or Big Orange?
But it’s interesting to note that L.A. isn’t the most prestigious of all markets in the U.S., at least if you’re going by price. New York City holds the honor of being the location of the most expensive residential property ever sold in the country. In January, billionaire Ken Griffin paid $238 million for a penthouse in the building known as 220 Central Park South.

Martin Eiden of Compass’ sports and entertainment division explains the difference this way: “Manhattan has less land and the housing stock is almost always in mid- to high-rise buildings. With less land and significantly higher construction costs (due to the building type), Manhattan will always be more expensive,” he says.
So who are the people spending hundreds of millions of dollars on both coasts?
Where are all of these billionaires coming from?
Foreign money flooding into the real estate market has slowed, according to Robert Elson of Warburg Realty. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for wealthy Chinese to get money across the border to invest on foreign soil.
“Russia, similar story—very few rubles are being allowed out of the country now,” he explains.
The Middle East is also cutting back on investment, says Elson.
“It used to be Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, with huge cash flows coming into real estate here,” he continues. Because of political and financial constraints, “that has pretty much dried up as well.”
So who, then, is really in the market for these priciest of estates? While foreign influence has waned a bit, Elliott says it’s the same pool of ultrahigh net worth buyers from North America and Europe snapping up homes for record-breaking prices on the East Coast, the West Coast, and the Florida coast.

Some opt to keep a couple of megamansions fairly close to each other, like an estate in Bel Air and a luxury beach house in Malibu—or a New York City penthouse and a giant spread in the Hamptons.
“And they might also have luxury homes in St-Tropez, London, Tokyo, or Singapore,” adds Arana.
To sum up the question of whether the $120 million sale of The Manor is a flash in the pan or a harbinger of a multi-multimillion-dollar trend, Elliott cites the well-worn phrase, “a rising tide lifts all boats.”
It’s all well and good for international billionaires, but let’s hope it doesn’t trickle down to the rest of us home buyers on the ground floor of starter homes. For most of us, the tide has risen high enough already.

Hard mode: choose up to 3 different OTP AU settings and write 500 words or less for each! Good luck! (feel free to become the next fairy and offer some writers your own challenge, too!)
I got this message more than 1 moth ago but I’ve finally finished them!Ready for some musical AUs?
Phantom of the OperaThe lock of the door gotturned but Jack didn't notice it. He was too busy changing intosomething more comfortable than stage clothes, deciding in the endfor a white gown with laces at the hems. The oddity of thesituation hit him when he entered the waiting room of his dressingroom and suddenly all the candles turned off as if by magic.Hetold himself he wouldn't act scared. Jack had always been brave, since the day he had been left all alone in the world, orphan of theomnic crisis. Hesitating for a brief moment he looked around, checking for a possible intruder. One could never know, given thetimes. Not to mention Jack was steadily becoming the new star of theopera. Everything could be possible, even the worst possibility.Thevoice that broke the tense silence put Jack's nerves to rest.Uponrecognizing who was speaking, he relaxed immediately. Jackhad no face nor a proper name to associate with the entity but thedeep voice that had spent so much excruciating time coaching himthrough arpeggios and melodies was his Angel of music. An obscureentity who followed him ever since the day he put foot inside theOpéra Garnier and who Jack believed was a messenger from hisdeceased father. It called to him with his tenor tone, warmingits way into Jack's heart even if it stung of jealousy andpossessiveness, “ignorant fool this brave young suitor, sharing inmy triumph!”Jack had to hide hissmile at being somehow coveted that way but more important matterswhere at hand, like his musical education. Sweet-talking the Angelout oh his outbursts was something that Jack had long since grownused to do. He had a demanding nature, prone to tantrums that seemedto be placated only by Jack's angelic voice hitting the right notesof a soft melody – the kind that stole hearts and tears at the sametime.Maybe, though, thistime the ghost had felt that his domain over Jack was beingthreatened, undermined enough that he wanted to re-assert his powerover the singer once and for all. Jack was slipping from between hisfingers, captivated by the spell of an admirer who had nothing tooffer other than the funds that surely were not coming from the hardwork. Certainly not someone who deserved him.If the ghostliving in the basement of the Opéra wanted to keep Jack close to himhe needed to offer him something more valuable than vile money, orhis expertise on singing. He needed toentice him, draw his attention by making him curiousand ensnare Jack in his net. Hismellifluous words had offered him the coveted sight of hisface.Jack followed his beloved voice toward the mirror andinto it, until he came face to face with the man wearing a white halfmask, and then took his hand.
Chicago
Thatsurely wasn't the way that Jack Morrison thought he would becomefamous and end up under the spotlight. He had thought it wouldhappen through a career in cabaret, dancing and singing and lookinglike a delicious candy wrapped in refined, sparkling sequin clothes, and all that jazz.Instead, his audience would get to know himin a very different way... by his bewildered mugshot greeting thereaders of tomorrow's newspapers from the first page, the captioncalling him murderer. But that would be for tomorrow. As fortoday, Jack had been dragged off to jail to wait for his turn at thecourthouse, thrown in together with similarly convictedfelons. There with hims was Gabriel Reyes in all his glory, the latest murderous sensation in town. He was famous for the show heshared with his brother and for killing said brother and his owncheating husband in a blind rage. He had seemed to realize what hehad done only afterward, while washing his hands from all theirblood. There had been no guilt whatsoever. It was too bad thatGabriel's fame was already on the path of decline due to Jack'sunexpected stunt. The world was full of sharks and once Jackhad managed to grab the spotlight for himself, he found it difficultto let go of it, or share, even if Reyes was a true vaudevillain, more than Jack could ever dream of being. A hot one too, worth todance a sweet tango with, but as far as Jack was concerned, it wasnot enough for him to give up on his one chance at popularity.Jackhad done anything he could in order to hold on this opportunity; hescraped together what little money he had and made sure his tale waseven more pathetic, appealing to the masses, fluttering his eyelashesat the paparazzi and lawyers alike. It was that way that AnaAmari, best criminal defense lawyer of the city did her gigs: prettyboys with pretty eyes and sob stories. She was quick to switch fromGabriel's case to Jack's, and her silver tongue was legendary incourt. She spun his account until it became unrecognizable and farfrom the truth. It was self defense! They'd both reached for thepulse rifle!Almost ashamed by his own actions, Jack acceptedtips from Ana that would have been otherwise used in Gabriel's case, making the celebrated actor go ballistic. In the end though, after his own sentence had been lifted, it had been Gabriel the oneto seek Jack out and ask for his help. Cooperation. “You know, mydouble act is still a damn fun time. But to put it on I need apartner.”Double act, double the murderers for double thefame. The vaudeville scene was going to become all theirs. And theinviting smile on Gabriel's face was naughty enough to suggest thatmore would be shared between them than just the profits.Jackaccepted.
Moulin RougeTheroom was the most absurd collection of things Jack had ever had thepleasure of seeing. It should have been a pleasure. Probably. It wasnot.Itwas gaudy, an extravaganza of exotic objects unlike any other, andfar removed from the simple, almost puritan education Jack hadreceived while growing up.Itmade him uneasy, thorn between gawking at the mess or leaving in ahurry. There where reddrapes everywhere, carved panels of gold painted wood, statues ofmonstrous foreign creatures... In the middle of all that opulence, clad in nothing but black satin and lace lingerie clinging to hisstatuesque body stood Mr Gabriel, motionless. Hissmile was a little awkward, too big and unnatural, one hand in theair, the other resting on the inviting curve of his hip.Jackhad to be honest with himself: he would have immediately said yes toanything the actor proposed him, then and there, at that display. Theproblem was, Mr Gabriel seemed to think the same - as soon as Jackstarted explaining the reason why he had been sent to meet up withhim, Mr Gabriel had launched into a series of yips and barks at hiswords, rolling around on the silk sheets of the bed, gripping them inhis beautiful fingers like a lifeline.Uncomfortable at thedisplay due to both a certain sense of decorum that was beingoffended and the fact that he felt a growing attraction at the sightthat he could not deny, Jack tried to not stammer as he reminded MrGabriel that he was there for a private poetry reading session, asper their prior agreement in the ballroom. When Mr Gabrielpulled Jack down on the bed with him, begging for more naughty words,Jack gaped at him like a fish. Was Mr Gabriel a kindred soul, one whotrembled in delight at the beauty of rhymes and poetry? Thehand that sneaked on his inner thigh and the hot mouth latching atthe base of his neck, whereis pulse was beating faster than usual, told Jack a different story. Yeah, no. Big mistake.Thatwasn't what Torbjörnhad sent Jack there for! He said as much to Mr Gabriel and theperformer recoiled at the words.“Torbjörn...You're not the Duke!” Mr Gabriel was both offended and distressed. It would have been comical if he weren't throwing accusing glares atJack, who still found him the most gorgeous man he'd ever seen, evenif he looked murderous at the moment.“I-I am not!” whatmust have happened was becoming clear to him. An even biggermistake.A sharp knock on the door broke the momentary stallbetween the two.“Shit, the Duke!” Mr Gabriel whispered ashis face paled, eyes snapping to the door.Shit indeed, Jackthought. To be posted soon on AO3!

Boring non-spell post
I mentioned this in the Jelly Belly post, but the whole flippin’ candy aisle can be used for love or prosperity spells. Or you know, love AND prosperity, whatever.
There’s a bunch of boring Adult advice under the read more, we’ll be back with candy tomorrow
It’s important to remember that while spellwork can help with things, it doesn’t work alone.
For prosperity: Do the visualization, light the candles, burn the incense. And also: figure out what you mean by prosperity. Budget your incoming cash as best you can so that you aren’t left short at the end of the month. I know that’s not POSSIBLE for a lot of people, in a lot of jobs, so part of prosperity work is working on wage equality, universal basic income, the social safety net that should mean that getting sick doesn’t put people in debt. Giving back, whether in cash or time, is a luxury that not everyone can afford: if you can afford it, it’s a good way to balance the scales. It’s not everything (people shouldn’t be relying on charity to make up the shortfall from a government that can’t or won’t redistribute wealth a little bit fairly) but it can help.
If you’re a person for whom the money just doesn’t stretch to cover the whole month, and you can’t make it work, know that it’s not your fault. Yes look at budgeting, but I promise that it’s not just a budgeting problem. You deserve nice things, being poor isn’t a moral judgement from on high, and fuck anyone who says it is.
For love: do the work on yourself to make yourself lovable. Not diets and weight loss and whatever else unless that’s going o make you happy for yourself (a person who only loves you when you look a certain way is an asshole and not worth your time) but emotional and mental work. Do you feel like you are worthy of love? I promise you are, but my saying it doesn’t make you believe it. Therapy is a good tool for this, although it’s not always affordable in terms of money or time. A spiritual practice can help too, as long as it’s one that lifts you up. You are loveable, and while I’m not saying that you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else, I’m saying that first you have to know that you’re allowed to love yourself, and that you’re worth loving. I promise.
Love spells shouldn’t be aimed, that’s coercive if they work and deeply, crushingly, disappointing if they don’t.
For protection: ok, so for psychic protection, yeah the thing to do is spell work, but maybe something a little more in depth than blueberry jelly beans, right? For physical protection: if the danger is coming from inside the house, as it were, please remember that you are worthy of love, unconditionally, and that someone who only loves you if isn’t worth your time. If you can call someone (a trusted friend, a professional, a faith leader) safely, please do so. If you can’t, if it’s safe to be on tumblr but not safe at home in general, message me. Ask about the blueberry crumble recipe. I’ll do my best to help.
If the physical protection that you’re looking for is general walking down the street protection, a self defense class if you’re able can help. Walking with a friend, carry your phone. Practice yelling real loud, maybe in a field where no one will be alarmed. Know that people are sometimes assholes, and it’s not your fault.
For spirituality: this is where a regular daily practice is good, in a tradition you feel comfortable with. Me, my spell work all has roots in Wicca and other modern Pagan traditions, but I have also found a comfortable spiritual home, at various times, with other traditions, and become increasingly uncomfortable with some. Find like-minded people. Use the internet to talk to them if they aren’t close to you. Eat your jellybeans with intent.
I’m not going to talk about the magical properties of candy as relating to health and weight loss. All things in moderation, right? Ok. A lot of sugar isn’t great for physic awareness. Go forth and eat your jelly beans, but maybe also another food too!

Buffett defends Berkshire stock push, reassures on future as revenue smashes record
New York City (Reuters) – Warren Buffett on Saturday forcefully safeguarded Berkshire Hathaway Inc’s ( BRKa.N) decision to invest heavily in stocks of companies such as Apple Inc ( AAPL.O) as he labors through a four-year dry spell considering that his last major acquisition of a business.
Buffett, 89, likewise utilized his annual letter to Berkshire shareholders to ensure they ought to not fret about the future of the business, which is “100%ready” for when he and 96- year-old Vice Chairman Charlie Munger are no longer around.
Berkshire also posted record full-year earnings of $8142 billion, almost twice the previous high from 2017, boosted by unrealized gains from its stock investments. Operating earnings, however, fell 3%to $2397 billion.
The Omaha, Nebraska-based corporation ended the year with a $128 billion money stockpile, after redeeming $2.2 billion of stock in the fourth quarter and $5 billion in2019
” I do believe it’s on the right path,” stated James Armstrong, president of Henry H. Armstrong Associates in Pittsburgh, which invests one-fourth of its possessions in Berkshire. “Its balance sheet is precisely the kind of toolkit you wish to leave a successor.”
Berkshire has more than 90 units utilizing 391,539 individuals, consisting of the BNSF railway, Geico cars and truck insurance provider, Dairy Queen ice cream and See’s candies; clothes and precious jewelry business, and namesake utility and real estate brokerage businesses.
It also buys such companies as American Express Co ( AXP.N), Bank of America Corp ( BAC.N) and Coca-Cola Co ( KO.N).
Berkshire ended the year with a $128 billion cash stockpile, having made no major acquisitions since paying $321 billion in January 2016 for aircraft parts maker Precision Castparts, and Buffett regreted his inability to discover huge business to purchase.
” The opportunities to make significant acquisitions having our needed characteristics are rare,” he composed.
Buffett’s letters have actually grown much shorter in recent years, with less humor and less discussion about the economy and investing.
James Shanahan, an Edward Jones & Co expert who rates Berkshire a “buy,” called Saturday’s letter a missed opportunity to show how Berkshire, whose stock has actually trailed the Requirement & Poor’s 500 SPX over the last years, is underestimated.
” It felt a lot more professional and removed, and lost some of the wisdom that made it so entertaining,” he said.
AMERICAN TAILWIND REVISITED
The record profit is mostly the outcome of an accounting rule that Buffett urges financiers to ignore, requiring Berkshire to report paper gains and losses from its stock holdings with earnings.
Buffett, whose $902 billion net worth makes him the world’s fourth-richest individual according to Forbes magazine, stated that while he still prefers buying entire business, stocks are a much better bet than low-yielding bonds.
He attributed that in part to the “American Tailwind,” or the economy’s capability to grow in spite of obstructions such as war, high inflation and monetary panic.
” If something near to current rates should prevail over the coming years and if business tax rates likewise stay near the low level organisations now enjoy, it is practically specific that equities will gradually perform far better than long-lasting, fixed-rate financial obligation instruments,” he wrote.
Buffett’s comments amazed Stephen Dodson, who manages the Bretton Fund, which owns Berkshire shares.
FILE PICTURE: Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett walks through the exhibit hall as investors gather to speak with the billionaire investor at Berkshire Hathaway Inc’s annual shareholder conference in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S., Might 4,2019 REUTERS/Scott Morgan
” I was anticipating him to say the market was pricey,” Dodson said. “He didn’t even hint that.”
The cash stake has actually however been a drag for investors.
In 2019, Berkshire’s stock increased 11%while the S&P 500 including dividends rose 31.5%, the most significant shortage in a years.
SUCCESSION
Buffett also utilized his letter to comfort financiers that Berkshire will remain in excellent hands after he leaves.
In 2018, Berkshire promoted Greg Abel, 57, and Ajit Jain, 68, to vice chairmen, providing oversight of Berkshire’s non-insurance and insurance operations, respectively, and freeing Buffett and Munger to concentrate on releasing capital.
Buffett also has portfolio managers Todd Combs and Ted Weschler helping him buy stocks.
Combs, 49, on Jan. 1 likewise ended up being Geico’s chief executive.
“Charlie and I long ago went into the immediate zone,” Buffett composed. “That’s not precisely great news for us. But Berkshire shareholders need not worry: Your business is 100%prepared for our departure.”
He also stated shareholders will have the ability to ask Abel and Jain concerns at Berkshire’s yearly meeting on May 2, where Buffett and Munger typically do the majority of the talking.

” I’m comfortable with how Berkshire is moving up the next generation,” said Thomas Russo, a partner at Gardner, Russo & Gardner in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a longtime Berkshire shareholder.
Buffett said his estate might need 12 to 15 years to deal with his Berkshire stock, which is going to charities including the Bill & Melinda Gates Structure, and Berkshire stock will be “a safe and satisfying investment” throughout that time.
The disposal strategy “gives financiers the capability to concentrate on whatever else,” stated David Marcus, chief financial investment officer at Evermore Global Advisors, who personally owns Berkshire shares. “If Buffett weren’t the age that he is, it would not matter.”

Amazing Quest 2: Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Going Back to School, or How I learned to not worry and love Diamonds~! And, since my associate didn't really explain this, here is PotatoCanon1171 once more, with this excellent analysis on Kylie's abilities. “Kylie is my favorite character in 2, not only for her flexibility, but also because her origins, which we learn later, show one of the earliest hints to the origins of Chimerae and the Puddings themselves. The important thing to remember is the armor sections, Head, Body and Legs, are the important bits for Kylie. True, her tail is important, but it doesn't affect her skills any, just increases her stats like weapons do for other characters. To acquire skills, you have to experiment with combinations until something comes up. As said earlier, any gene can be placed in any slot, so, experimentation is key here. For instance. Head: Womanticore Body: Munchkin Legs: Jelly nets you the excellent Wabaru Wabaru skill, or “WoblBobble” in English, which hits for regular physical damage, and ensures a counter attack if hit in the next round, and costs nothing. However, should we rearrange these same genes.... Head: Munchkin Body: Jelly Legs: Womanticore We get Blue Sweaty Spurs, a magic attack that deals non-elemented damage, but also has a high chance of inflicting Drunk. Apparently, Kylie can get venom glands filled with booze. More importantly, it's worthy to note that not only the gene combinations are important, but also the order. Once you find them, you can retain skills by meeting their experience costs. Once you're accumulated enough exp in battle with those genes, you'll retain that skill no matter what genes Kylie has equipped. ...” And since my dear friend, PotatoCanon doesn't give any gene combinations for skills, I'll throw you, dear reader, a bone, and give you some to get you started, but I also feel like PotatoCanon is on the money here, and the real fun with Kylie is experimenting to find what you can. Anyways, here they are: Head: Munchkin Body: Womanticore Legs: Ostrich Nets you the SktrScatter Skill, which allows you to run from any non-boss fight. Head: Tyrazaurus Body: Frog Legs: Ostrich Nets you the Jeffbirdr skill, which deals massive physical damage, but also cuts your LP by 33% of what its current value is. Head: Jelly Body:Frog Legs: Jelly Nets you the Spnfl Sugar Skill (Called “Roll with the Changes” in Japanese), which grants you LP regeneration and the one I'm sure you're begging for, you little power-gaming schmucks Head: Tyrazaurus Body: Jelly Legs: Munchkin Nets you the terrifying “Beam Gaze” skill, (Burning Smile in Japanese), which allows you to use the Beamchisaurus' from AQ1's eye beams, dealing massive light-based damage to all enemies. However, the trade-off is this skill sucks MP harder than your gamewatch does batteries, haha! “But where do I get all these genes?” I hear you ask. Return to the Coliseum area, and now that July is dead, there is a merchant to the left which offers the Munchkin, Frog, Ostrich, Jelly and Tyrazaurus genes. The latter will cost you some serious currencies, but it is very much worth it. If you want to get one more, return to the usher, and he'll mention that the fights are starting up. If you join in, you'll be pitted against three random encounters with just Kylie, and if you beat those, then, you'll be allowed to move on to the next boss.... Announcer: And, the opening match in the newly re-opened Coliseum, reigning champ Balzac versus....some girl named Kylie! Dudu: Hey! We won that fight! Balzac: The International Monster Girl Battling Judges deemed the fight invalid due to the sponsor being a demon, so I keep my title! NYAKNYAKNYAK! Enki: Now, I know we're all feeling a little tense now, but, we need to remain calm and collected. But, Kylie.... Kylie: Yes? Enki: I'll give you a candy bar if you win. Kylie: (Eyes glowing) Roger, MA'AM! Dudu: Whoa! Even Enki's fired up! --Boss Fight!-- Cat-Oblepas LP: 1800 MP: 600 Balzac must've been main-lining her energy drinks since you fought her last, as she's much tougher. She still has her Cat Eye skill, she also has the Cat O Nine Tails, which deals 1-9 hits of light physical damage, and her Cat Man Du skill allows her to heal. Ugh, deal with her as you will. If you have even the most basic genes, you ought to find some way of dealing with this Cat-astrophe of a boss. --Boss Fight!-- Cat-Oblepas: Meow you did it! You scratched my hand! Ballzy~! I can't fiiiiIiiiIiight! Balzac: Wha-HUH? We've been training and practicing? How did they beat you! Kylie: A diet of candy bars and masochism. Also, about 5k in monster girl genes. Announcer: You heard it here, folks! Eat whatever you want and spend money to become a champ, just like KYLIEEEEEEE! Kylie: Thank, you, thank you! Balzac: Oh, fuddly, I guess I ought to try to rank up in Southfort Monster Girl Monster Association Kylie: But that spells out-- Announcer: SHOW'S OVER FOLKS, GET OUT! Now, you can go to the OTHER attraction in Corset, the Magic School! The students here are probably why the Coliseum is able to stay afloat, financially speaking, as many of the magical lessons you can listen in on concern magic for seduction, magic to make yourself more attractive or the infamous “Magical Group Tactics” classroom, where a nondescript female professor describes in increasingly uncomfortable lengths tight formations, long combined thrusting assaults, and other various innuendo. That classroom is, thankfully, empty. Remember it, though, as it is important later. Anyways, once you're done horsing around, head to the large office on the third floor. There, you'll find an old man sighing loudly. Indeed, he even has a snuffly MIDI sighing effect with his sprite. Dudu: What's the matter, old guy? Enki: Dood! Erm, Dudu! That's not polite! Um, sir, are you alright? Old Man: Oh, hello, children and homonculus, I'm sad. Kylie: We can see that. Anything we can do about it? Old Man: Well, maybe about my sadness. You probably can't do anything about what's CAUSING me to be sad. Enki: Ah-huh... Old Man: See, I'm the Headmaster of Corset Magical Academy, and therefore responsible for the Academy's fine wealth of magical treasures. However, I got this letter with my tea, and it's ruined my entire day thus far! I'm not sure if I can even muster up the strength to teach my afternoon ,” Use Magic to Increase your Beard Power” class. Dudu: Wow! Magic must be amazing! Enki: Let me look at this letter. “Dear Mr. Bearderson, I am the infamous cat thief known throughout the land, and I will be vising your Academy this evening. I'll be stealing your most precious pieces in your collection, the gemstones known as “Queen Ozma's Tears.” I'm sure they'll go well right next to my Nu Waa Egg and Philosopher's Stone. Cheers, Genki Sake. “ Ooh, that's awful! Dudu: Yeah, if only there were some people who could help you.... Headmaster: That's it! You all clearly have nothing better to d—I mean, are surely expert anti-theft personnel! You could ensure Genki Sake can't get to the jewels! Enki: And how do you propose we do that? Headmaster: I dunno? Traps? I gotta go. Oh, thanks, kids! I feel a lot better now! (The Headmaster walks off, whistling) Enki: DOOD! SERIOUSLY! Dood: I'm sorry, Deliost! Kylie: Wait....Those aren't your names... Deliost: Eh-heh, well.... (Deliost comes clean) Kylie: I see. Well, that's a lot to take in, but I can't very well abandon you now. Plus, you helped me get stronger. So! I'll stay with you and protect you, at least until you go back to your families! Deliost: Thank you, Ms. Kylie! (The two hug, and Kylie gives Deliost a peck on the forehead, as Dood looks on, mystified) Dood: Is this...Love? Kylie: What? I'm sorry, I didn't hear that. We need to get to work! Dood: Okay! You now can wander the halls of the school, finding items that can be used as traps. You have ten minutes of real-time to find items and set them up after talking to the Headmaster before a new scene interrupts your child-like whimsy of domestic terror. (A black shadow zips through the halls, past the traps, moving like a flash, laughing in a flute-like voice.) You now have to hunt down the intruder. Be wary, though, the traps you put up will now trigger, inconveniencing you. Looks like setting up traps willy-nilly wasn't the smartest plan, eh? While this seems like a fool's errand, you can ascertain what level the intruder is on by the fact that she'll laugh in her flutey voice if you're on the same floor as her. When you manage to catch up to the dark shadow... Dood: Hey! Give it up, thief! (The shadow disappears into nothingness) Deliost: Magic? Dood: We need to check elsewhere! (He turns around, running right into a white-haired woman in a catsuit. Since Dood is so short, he runs right into her cleavage, with comedic “Boing” sound effects.) Cat Burglar: Oh, my~. Such a bold gentleman! I think I might fall in love! Deliost: Dood! Are you alright! Dood: UWHAAAA! COULDN'T BREATHE! Kylie: Excuse me! But that's highly irresponsible! Adults shouldn't fall in love with children! I'm sure there's some lovely man out there for you, Miss. Or woman, if you're into that, I guess. I really don't know you, so.... Cat Burglar: Oooh, and the Chimera nanny thinks she can lecture me when her pups are out and about so late? Kylie: I'm a womanticore. Cat Burglar: Eh? I don't care if you're Queen Toruble herself! I won't let anyone get in the way of my elegant burglary! --Boss Fight!-- Genki Sake LP: 2100 MP: 700 Genki is fast, so the first course of action is to lower her speed. If you have it, WoblBobble works wonders here, as does the GluShoe spell that Deliost can learn at level 12. If you can lower her speed, then she's not much of a threat. While she does have “Mana Staple” skill which cuts your LP whenever you use spells, focus on regular attacks to bypass this situation ally punishing move. --Boss Fight!-- Genki: Urgh! You may have beaten me, but I still have the jewels! Now, I, Genki Sake, will bid you cute kittens and a slightly older kitty, adieu! Dood: Excuse me! Do you mean these? (He presents two large aquamarine gemstones) Genki: (Her face turns white with shock) How did you get those? Dood; Your shirt is zipped down so low, they fell into my mouth when you bumped into me. I guess we won, AND we got the jewels. Genki: URGH! (She teleports away) Return to the Headmaster in his office, who is smoking a bubble pipe. Headmaster: Aw, you return. Tell me, did you catch the thief? Dood: No. We beat her up and got these, though! (Dood presents the gems) Headmaster: Oh, I see! Well, good work, my boy! The Tears of Ozma are a great treasure indeed. However, I wish to give them to you all, for a job well done! Kylie: Is that really okay, Mr. Headmaster? Headmaster: Of course! They have no intrinsic power themselves, and all they seem to do is attract evildoers seeking to steal them. Therefore, my best option is to pawn them off on some su--, I mean, give them to pure-hearted people, like yourselves! Deliost: Thank you, sir. We'll take care of them! Headmaster: Yes, yes, now, run along, I have a seminar I need to attend on the Seventh Space Fold. Kylie: ...Let's go, children.... Dood: Is he going to be alright? Kylie: As long as he doesn't eat his own beard during his trip, I should think so. (The party exits the Magic Academy, as Genki Sake reappears) Genki: I heard everything! Dood: UWAGH! Deliost: So, you're back to steal the Tears of Ozma, are you? Genki: Non! I'm merely here to help! You all are on a journey across the world, are you not? I could help you! I have many skills that will assist you! Kylie: I'm not so sure... Genki: I heard you speaking to the children. A caretaker who is but two years old? How dreadful! Why wouldn't you want the help of someone who is old enough to drink in most countries? Dood: Aw, she's okay, Kylie! She was just grumpy from being too hot, before, right? I mean, why else would you have your shirt unzipped so low? Genki: Oui! You are truly a intelligent boy! Dood: Hehe, she said I was a tent! Deliost: … Genki Sake joins! She is fast, and has a variety of ninja skills and tools to assist you! I found that, with her, Deliost has much more time to focus on healing, as Genki can assist with her elemental prana skills. With her in the party, head east from Corset to the sleepy town of Geed Wulld. There, you can see a large church, along with a rather expansive inn. Apparently this is a pilgrimage site for a new religion. (A rather large man in a priest's alb appears, bowing to the party) Priest: HELLO, MY LITTLE LAMBS AND LICHENS! THE CHURCH OF ST. SETHAN IS OPEN TO ALL! DO YOU WISH TO GAZE UPON THE VISAGE OF ST. SETHAN? Kylie: Um, no, thank you. We do require a place to stay the night, though. Priest: THE INN THERE IS QUITE THE REPUTABLE ESTABLISHMENT! TELL THEM PADRE SLAB SENT YOU. THEY WILL SURELY ASSIST YOU AS THEY CAN! Deliost: Thank you, sir! Slab: TAKE CARE, MY SLABOTRONIC CHILDREN! Sure enough when you mention to the innkeeper that Padre Slab sent you, you get to spend the night for free. The party eats and drinks their fill, well into the night, until you can hear a knock on the door, and Genki's face turns sheet white when she sees who enters... (A pair of beavers in blue suits with black glasses both enter) Beaver 1; 'Ullo, Miss. I had heard through the duckvine that a certain no-goodnik thief-lady was spending the night here, yup. You wouldn't have seen her, would you? Beaver 2: She upset our poor, undeserving superior, you see, and we, being the upright beavers we are, yup, we cannot let this stand, yup. (Genki slowly hides behind Deliost, as the party stares at her) Deliost: What did you do? Genki: I may have sort of been hired by the Beaver Mafia to steal the Tears of Ozma. Now, they probably think I stole them... Kylie: So, you tricked us to help you hide from them? Genki: ….Yes, but I really do like you all! (The beavers slowly amble to the party) Beaver 1: We can see you, Genki, yup. Beaver 2: Yup, yup! You really shouldn't hide behind a young girl when you're a full grown woman! Just hand over the gems, and we can be on our way! Dood: Haha! She can't do that! Because she doesn't have them! I do! Also, even if she did, then Genki could escape by flying away! Genki: (Kneads her brow) That's a stereotype, Dood! I can't fly! Deliost: Dood! That's not nice, please apologize! Beaver 1: That's right, apologize to her, now, boy! Beaver 2: Yup! That way, we can kill her all proper, yup! Kylie: Let me get this, straight, though, Mr. Beaver. Racism is bad in your book, but murder in the name of your Don is-- Beaver 1: A-OKAY, YUP! Kylie: Oh, I see (Sips her tea thoughtfully) Genki: Can we PLEASE just fight them off now? --Boss Fight!-- Beeba LP: 2400 MP:340 Beebo LP: 2400 MP: 230 This fight isn't so hard if you're strategic. Beeba (The tall one with a hat) is fond of brute force attacks, using both his regular attacks, Waffle Iron, and Qualer to stomp his opponents, while Beebo (The shorter one with a pompadour) is fond of status magic and healing, raising Beeba's attributes and healing him as necessary. I recommend taking out Beebo first, as he can drag out the fight with his healing. --Boss Fight!-- Beeba: Ugh! This is no good, yup! We need to get more help, yup! Beebo: Good thing we set fire to that church beforehand, yup! Dood: Eh? (The party rushes outside as the Beavers flee, finding Padre Slab unconscious in front of the church, which is now a giant bonfire) Dood: Mr. Slab! Is he okay? Kylie: (Bends over him, as her tail feels his neck for a pulse) He's still breathing, although, I recommend wee take him away from the fire! Genki: Look! (A figure rises from within the church, eyes glowing far greater than the fire, as a smile spreads across its face.) Deliost: I smell evil magic within that building. Oooh, I can't take it! Dood! Please, do something... Dood: I...I....I... (A new scene where Dood sees this scene, and turns, to see a horned girl in front of him, where she pokes his forehead) Horned Girl: Be the hero I know you are, Dood. Remember, both in body and soul! Deliost: Dood! Dood! Are you alright? Dood: (His body erupts into a brilliant white light, growing into a powerful white pudding form) GO! PUDDING THE GREAT! Figure: So, it happens once more. HAHAHAHA! Come! Show Alpbara, the Herald of GeoTerror, your progress, Pudding Saint! --Boss Fight!-- Alpbara, Herald of GeoTerror LP: 5400 MP: 1000 This fight might seem daunting, considering his masive LP count, but it's really there to show how overwhelmingly powerful Dood's pudding forms are. His default form the Vanilla Angel Food, is the form he's using, and has a passive LP regen, so even if Alpbara's cornucopia of flame and darkness attacks manage to hit, they won't do much to him. Finish Alpbara as you see fit. I'd also be remiss to mention that Dood's theme song, “GO! The Pudding Saint Overflows!” Blares throughout this fight to pump you up. --Boss Fight!- Alpbara: I-Impressive! But know that GeoTerror has you in his palm, boy. Nothing, not even the legacy of your blood and that damnable traitor will save you! Deliost: Dood! You did it! You beat that demon! Alpbara: (Explodes) Dood: I...Ooops... (The entire party is blasted away, to the far-off kiwi woods, on the far continent. What will they find there? Find out...NEXT CHAPTER!)

OMAHA, Neb | Warren Buffett's investing continues to evolve even at 87
OMAHA, Neb — Warren Buffett is still finding new places to invest decades after he started, even though his basic approach of finding businesses selling for less than they are worth hasn’t changed much.
Buffett resisted investing in tech companies for years because he didn’t think he could pick which ones would be enduring winners, but now his Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate is a major Apple shareholder because he views Apple as a consumer products company with loyal customers.
The billionaire used to joke that airlines were such a bad investment that someone should have shot down the Wright brothers. Today, Berkshire holds investments in several major airlines.
Berkshire investors have generally profited as Buffett found new ways to put the company’s money to work over the years, although he has made mistakes along the way. Berkshire could reveal some more surprises when the Omaha, Nebraska-based company details its stock holdings in a quarterly regulatory filing which is expected to be made Tuesday.
The biggest change Berkshire made to its stock portfolio this year has been adding to its Apple holdings. Some of the smaller changes that get disclosed, such as the new stake in Teva Pharmaceuticals that Berkshire bought last year, might be the work of the company’s two other money managers.
“The fact that he’s changing is a good thing,” said George Morgan, a finance professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a former investment adviser.
Buffett was criticized in the 1990s for missing out on the boom in technology stocks, but the 87-year-old’s caution proved sensible a few years later then the tech bubble burst.
The way Buffett explains it, he keeps three boxes on his desk: in, out and too hard. That last box is where tech companies had always lived until Buffett invested in IBM stock in 2011.
“Even with hindsight, it’s a little hard to figure out, you know, who was going to make all the money,” Buffett said at the 2007 annual meeting. “There’s just games that are too tough.”
Buffett says now that he should have recognized Google’s potential as an investment because Berkshire’s Geico insurance company was an early customer of the search engine and selling ads is a business he understands. But Berkshire still hasn’t invested in Google because the company sells at a premium now, and Buffett tries to find investments that are selling for less than they are worth.
It may seem easy to look back and conclude that Berkshire should have invested heavily in Google or Amazon a decade ago, but even if he had, who knows how many bad picks might Buffett have made in the sector. Buffett said at this spring’s annual meeting that he was wrong about IBM and sold it for little gain about six years after he started buying it.
Buffett has continued buying Apple stock in the first half of this year, and Berkshire said in its earnings report that it held shares worth nearly $50 billion in the iPhone maker at the end of June.
Andy Kilpatrick, a stockbroker-author who wrote “Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffett,” said Buffett pays attention to changes in business and makes changes to his investing approach, as needed.
“I think it’s just evolution of his thinking,” Kilpatrick said.
Edward Jones analyst Jim Shanahan said the changes Buffett has made in recent years could reflect the growing influence of the two investment managers he hired or the two deputies who are in line to eventually replace him as Berkshire’s CEO.
“This might signal what sort of things might come,” Shanahan said. But it’s hard to know if that’s the case because Berkshire doesn’t spell out who makes each investment decision.
Earlier this year, Berkshire promoted Greg Abel and Ajit Jain to vice chairman roles and expanded their duties as part of the company’s succession planning, but Buffett has no plans to retire. He’ll turn 88 near the end of August.
The airline investment is a little easier to understand, Shanahan said, because consolidation in that industry has strengthened the position of all the remaining airlines.
And it’s important to remember that Berkshire’s stock portfolio doesn’t contribute nearly as much to the company’s earnings as the businesses Berkshire owns, such as Geico, BNSF railroad and its Berkshire Hathaway Energy utility unit.
Berkshire’s insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of the company’s net income. Altogether Berkshire owns more than 90 companies, including clothing, furniture, candy, private jet and jewelry firms. The company also has major investments in such companies as American Express, IBM and Wells Fargo & Co.
